“The last few months have been traumatic, especially this week. I was not given room for concentration, but I had left the battle for God to fight. I told those planning to impeach me that they will succeed‎ if they can impeach God.

“I did not bring myself back to power; my coming back after eight years was divine. I defeated the APC totally in all the elections, still they did not want to concede victory easily until when the Ekiti people rose to defend that June 21 mandate.I will now squarely face the business of governance.”

How Daredevil robbers struck at First Bank,Wema at Ikorodu

Featured Image

The heavily armed gang of robbers which attacked two commercial banks at Ikorodu, last Tuesday also overran the Area N Police Command Headquarters and its Police Division, Ijede-Ikorodu area of Lagos State, Vanguard has gathered.

Sources disclosed that robbers who were armed with Ak-47 rifles and were clad in military camouflage, were said to have attacked the police formations at the same time they struck at the banks.
Meanwhile, members of the Ikorodu bank robbers numbering about 30, had split themselves into two groups during the operation.

One of the groups were said to have attacked Omitoro branch of First Bank, where they carted away an unspecified amount of money, before proceeding to the Ijede branch of Wema Bank where they also unleashed terror on bank customers and passerby. An unidentified man was also said to have been shot in the process.

The other gang which struck at the Area N Command, was said to have thrown the entire command into disarray.

A police source attached to Area N Command, who spoke with Vanguard on the condition of anonymity, also said the gunmen took the policemen at the area command unawares as they shot indiscriminately.

“ They came in a large number and were shooting randomly. People were running for safety. Even the armed guards at the gate of the area command could not repel the attack.
‘’The gunmen were armed with Ak- 47 rifles but they took the policemen unaware. They wore military camouflage uniforms.
‘’ It was after they left that we learnt that there was a bank robbery in town. I am sure that they attacked the area command and division because they wanted to prevent any form of police reinforcement during the bank robberies.,” he stated.

Meanwhile, investigations conducted by Vanguard at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, have revealed that the robbers who carried out last Monday’s bank robbery and attack on the area command was the same as those who attacked a branch of FCMB Bank at Lekki area of Lagos in March 2015, where three policemen and two civilians were killed.

Though four of the suspects who took part in the Lekki robbery had been arrested by operatives of SARS, Ikeja, led by Sp Abba Kyari, over 30 other members of the gang, which specialized in kidnapping, sea piracy, armed robbery, pipeline vandalism, are still on the prowl.

Vanguard gathered that the gang which had been terrorizing residents of Ikorodu in recent times, was predominantly involved in pipeline vandalism, operating from the creeks of Arepo, Ogun State, but ventured into kidnapping and armed robbery when men of IGP Anti- Pipeline Vandalism Squad halted their operation.

The IGP men, led by an assistant Commissioner of Police, Friday Ibadin, were said to have blocked off all routes aiding the gang in selling off stolen petroleum products from pipelines belonging to the NNPC.

This developments had since resulted in several violent clashes between the IGP men and members of the gang.

In one of those clashes, nine policemen were killed, while three other policemen where also killed in a drive-by shooting at Owutu police station.

The gang has also coordinated several kidnapping and armed robbery activities at Epe, Ajah and Ikorodu areas of Lagos since the IGP men intensified it blockade on their activities.

AC Milan Looking For Balotelli Return

Featured Image

To call Balotelli a flop at Liverpool would be a huge understatement as the Italian has only managed one premier league goal and three in all competitions for the reds since his move from AC Milan.

AC Milan are on the cusp of bringing the former Manchester City man back to the last place where he was able to find the net regularly as it is understood that if Sinisa Mihajilovic takes over, the Italian club would make a move for Balotelli. Balotelli and AC Milan are both looking to bounce back to the top of the food chain as both parties have fallen off the ladder in recent seasons and both parties might just drive each other back to the to. Balotelli would also be a bargain purchase as they would definitely spend far less than the 16 million euros he was sold for owing to how desperate Liverpool are to let him go.

Liverpool are cleaning out the hose as no fewer than four players are expected to follow in the footsteps of Stephen Gerrard and leave the club this season.

Pedro Extends Barcelona Contract

Featured Image

Pedro looked set to leave Barcelona until today as he has spent the entire season playing behind Neymar, Suarez and Messi but the Spaniard turned around to extend his contract with the club he loves.

Pedro who has made over 300 appearances for Barcelona since graduating from the youth team in the 2009/2009 season has found himself playing in the shadows of MSN ( the acronym for Messi, Suarez, Neymar) but managed to score 13 La Liga goals and put pen to paper to a deal that keeps him at the club until 2019. With Barcelona unwilling to let him go, the deal also includes a release clause of 150 million euros.

Chiellini Out Of UCL Final

Featured Image

Giorgio Chiellini has been somewhat the symbol of Juventus’ defense this season so he would obviously be a huge loss to the Old Lady on Saturday as they have to take on Luis Suarez, Neymar and Lionel Messi without him.

Chiellini pulled out of training on Wednesday with a calf complaint and was set to undergo a fitness test today. The Italian who was bit by Luis Suarez, earning the Barcelona forward a 4 month ban at the World Cup, failed the fitness test and would be watching the final from the stands. Bazargli has returned from a recent injury lay off and would be fit but you cannot shake the feeling that Juventus would sorely miss Chiellini the way they missed Neved in 2003.

Well Luis Suarez, have fun playing the ball as there is no usual flesh to feast on this time.

Edo: AIT, Raypower, Staff Go On Strike Over 17 Months Unpaid Salaries

Featured Image

For not paying salaries within a duration of 12 and 17 months, staff of the Daar Communications Plc, operator of African Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower FM Radio, have on Wednesday embarked on industrial action, shutting down all broadcasting activities at the Benin studio in protest.

According to report, the protesting workers were said to have blocked the main entrance to the station located along the Benin/Lagos bypass.

One of the protesters, who preferred anonymity revealed that newly employed staff of AIT were being owed 12 months while old staff were yet to be paid salaries between 13 months and staff of the Raypower FM, the Radio arm of the broadcast outfit were owed 17 months.

The protesting worker said: “The stations generate millions of naira on a daily basis, so there is no reason why we should not be paid our salaries. They have no excuse not to pay us our money. It is share wickedness and man’s inhumanity to his fellow man. We have families to care for and children to pay their school fees. Many of our children have stopped going to school. But their own attend schools abroad.

“Look at where our station is located, in another village so far away from Benin City. You have to chatter a taxi cab for not less than N500.00 to get there if you miss the staff bus. And not even every cab driver will agree to go there because of the wrong location of the station, yet, they expect us to be there every day, whether you have anything to do or not,”

Anti-riot policemen were however called by the management of the station to forestall any break down of law.

The Chairman of the organization, Raymond Dokpesi (Jnr) was said to have begged the protesters on phone, appealing for calm, assuring them that the management will within one week do everything possible to pay parts of the salary arrears.

Sunderland Re-hire Advocaat As Manager

Featured Image

Dick Advocaat oversaw the great escape for Sunderland this season as he saved them from the brink of anarchy and ensured that Sunderland beat the drop with a game to spare following a 0-0 draw against Arsenal.

Advocaat resigned the position as his contract ended with the season and the Dutchman claimed he wanted to spend time with his family. Sunderland who were unwilling to let him go due to the good work he had done with the squad quickly went into negotiations with Advocaat to continue with him for at least one more season. After rounds of negotiations, Sunderland happily announced the signing of Dick Advocaat as their manager for next season.

Advocaat would be charged with taking Sunderland to at least the middle of the table next season and he has more than proved that he is capable of doing the job.

Legalize Prostitution Or Give Us Jobs – Sex Workers Beg Buhari

Featured Image

Following the spate of police raids in the country’s capital territory, where over 3,000 prostitutes have been arrested, sex workers have reportedly thronged the streets of Abuja requesting that prostitution be legalized.

The sex workers rallied under the slogans, “Legalize prostitution now” and “Allow us to hustle for our daily bread”, protesting harassment from law enforcement agencies.

It would be recalled, in the last 3 months, more than three thousand commercial sex workers have been arrested in Abuja in raids carried out by the Special Task Force on City Cleaning and Management.

The women standing in for the National Association of Nigerian Prostitutes expressed their disappointment at what they call indiscriminate arrests and the way they are molested by different task forces on a daily basis.

One of the women, who preferred anonymity said: “We are Nigerians too and we only go about seeking our daily livelihood, so I see no reason why they should be harassing, arresting us and extorting money from us.”

“These same men are the ones who patronize us but during the day, they will be molesting us. What crimes have we committed? Many of us are graduates who could not secure jobs, so we hustle to make ends meet. We have families and responsibilities to meet, so they should allow us to work and make money.”

The association also claimed that they were better people than thieves and corrupt politicians.

They urged the government to either legalize prostitution or provide them with some decent jobs.

Nigerian Legislators Among World’s Highest Paid & Buhari-led Govt Wants A Pay Cut

Featured Image

While the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammad Buhari and the 8th national assembly settle into office, a new era for change, which is sallied in transparency and accountability is minced with an imminent pay cut report, which is beginning to loom from the National Assembly.

At current exchange rates, Nigerian legislators, who are among the world’s top paid, receive annual salaries of between $150,000 to $190,000 per annum, which is around $160,000 more than British MPs, who make around $105,000, according to data from The Economist.

Not until the plunging oil prices started putting pressure on the Nigerian naira earlier this year, the Nigerian lawmakers were the second highest paid lawmakers in the world.

An influential Nigerian technology hub, Co-Creation Hub, BudgetIT, is leading a campaign on social media tagged #OpenNASS, which is focused on making budgetary information accessible to Nigerians.

Quartz reported that the average legislators’ pay is more than 50 times Nigeria‘s GDP per capita. In a country where millions live on less than two dollars daily and minimum wage is set at $90 a month, the legislator’s bumper pay has been described as outrageous.

The campaign for a cut in the National Assembly’s funds as a new government comes in is fitting as President Buhari, who will earn less than the lawmakers, has a reputation for being modest and austere.

Between 2011 and 2014, the National Assembly received N150 billion yearly but will receive N120 billion in 2015 according to the recently passed 2015 budget.

BudgIT’s estimation also shows that since 1999, the National Assembly has received about N1.26 trillion yet there has been little accountability.

But all that could be change soon as the #OpenNASS campaign has won significant support from Bukola Saraki, the popular choice to take over from David Mark as Senate President.

The calls for accountability from the National Assembly will resonate with millions of Nigerians who are keen to see public service holders live less luxurious lives while the majority of their countrymen wallow in poverty.
