Manchester United Chasing Varane

Featured Image

They have lost out on Hummels who wants to stay at Dortmund and Manchester United have now turned their attention to Real Madrid defender Rafael Varane to strengthen their defense.

Manchester United have been in pursuit of a defender for a while. And while they were interested in varane, the 22 year old Frenchman was more of a second choice but now, Varane is the first option for Van Gaal’s side since Matts Hummels announced he wasn’t leaving Dortmund. Varane could leave Real Madrid in the summer in search of more playing time as Manchester United now have champions league football to offer the French center back.

I’m Quitting In 2017: Enyeama

Featured Image

Legendary Nigerian goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama has told the world when he intends to call it time with the Super Eagles of Nigeria. Enyeama has stated that the African Cup Of Nations in Gabon in 2017 would be his last tournament as a Nigerian footballer.

Many would have expected Enyeama to at least stay with the super eagles if they qualified for the World Cup in 2018 but the Lille shot stopper knows he might not be at his best and has decided to go one year earlier and according to what he told BBC, he hopes to go when the ovation is loudest. “It’s impossible to play football forever and the next tournament in Gabon will be my last one,” Enyeama told BBC Sport. “I’ve played in two finals, lost in 2004, won in 2013 and to win in 2017 is how I hope to be remembered. But more significantly we must not get ahead of ourselves because we need to qualify first.” He went on to say before praising how far African football had come in recent years.

Enyeama would be remembered as one of the greats but it would be too early to rule him out in 2018 after all, we’ve seen a few players retire and then decide to return. Most notably, Zidane and Makelele for France and Paul Scholes for Manchester United.

APC denounces Saraki & Dogara’s emergence as Senate /House of Reps leaders

Featured Image

After the elections which saw senator Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara emerge leaders of the Senate and House of reps respectively, the APC has denounced them as candidates of the party..According to a sstatement released  by the party’s leadership…

Senator Bukola and Hon. Dogara are not the candidates of the APC and a majority of its National Assembly members-elect for the positions of Senate President and House Speaker. The party duly met and conducted a straw poll and clear candidates emerged for the posts of Senate President, Deputy Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives, supported by a majority of all Senators-elect and members-elect of the House of Representatives….

All National Assembly members-elect who emerged on the platform of the party are bound by that decision. The party is supreme and its interest is superior to that of its individual members. Consequently, the APC leadership is meeting in a bid to reestablish discipline in the party and to mete out the necessary sanctions to all those involved in what is nothing but a monumental act of indiscipline and betrayal to subject the party to ridicule and create obstacles for the new administration. There can be no higher level of treachery, disloyalty and insincerity within any party”

Mototcyclist rapes 11-yr old pupil for 6 months

Featured Image
A 38-year-old motorcyclist, Obinna Ekusaba, has been arrested for allegedly raping a primary six pupil for six months in the Kirikiri area of Lagos State.
According to Punch, the incident happened from December, 2014, to May, 2015, on Karimu Street, Kirikiri Town.
Ekusaba often patronized the victim’s mother who sold cigarette and alcoholic drinks in a motor park on the street.
One fateful day, while the mother was away, the suspect called the 11-year-old to bring a bottle of drink into an uncompleted building in the motor park.
When she took the item there, the suspect lured her with money and raped her.The suspect is said to have subsequently defiled the victim several times before her mother observed on May 19 that her private parts had enlarged. After putting pressure on her, she confessed that Ekusaba had slept with her.
In her Police statement ,the victim said

“Brother Obinna (Ekusaba) used to buy cigarette, water and alcoholic drinks from my mother’s shop.Last year, I was in my mother’s shop when Brother Obinna called me to bring a bottle for him inside the building.
“On getting there, he put his hand inside his pocket and brought out N500; he asked me to enter. But I told him my daddy used to give me N500. He then brought out N1,000. As I entered the building, he removed my pants and put his private parts inside my own.
“After he removed it, I demanded the money and he brought it out. As I was about to collect it, he put it back inside his pocket. That was how Brother Obinna started sleeping with me.”
Her 35-year-old mother explained that she was bathing her when she observed that there was a change in her private parts. She said she observed that her hand could enter her private parts freely.
“I became worried because it was not like that before. I questioned her for hours before she confessed that it was a man called Obinna (Ekusaba) that had been raping her.
“She also said he would bring out his private parts and ask her to put it in her mouth. I could not bear it and had to report it to the police.”
The victim was said to have been taken to a general hospital where different tests on her confirmed that there was penetration. The police subsequently arrested the suspect, and upon interrogation, he reportedly confessed to the crime.
Ekusaba, who was married with four kids, said he slept with the victim both in the day and night.
“I came to Lagos 10 years ago and I started riding motorcycle.
“I know the complainant as the mother of the victim. She is like a sister to me. I have been making love with her daughter for long. When we started, I told her I would buy something for her, but I didn’t buy her anything. I slept with her five times.
“Each time I wanted to sleep with her, I would carry her on my lap. It was on the fifth time that I could penetrate.
“I slept with her at a car park. I did it during the day and night inside the park. I know I have committed an offence.”
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the case.
He said, “It has been transferred to SCID, Panti for more discreet investigation.”

The challenges ahead for new Ecobank chief Ade Ayeyemi

Featured Image

Outgoing Ecobank Transnational Incorporation (ETI) CEO, Albert Essien managed to end a boardroom crisis that threatened to cripple the bank in the space of a year, during which he was the CEO of the pan-African bank. Having achieved relative calm for the pan African bank, Ade Ayeyemi, the current Chief Executive Officer of Citigroup’s sub-Saharan Africa division, has been chosen to replace him. Ade has been handed the mandate of leading the lender to its next development phase.

Although Ayeyemi is meeting a more stable bank, he has a lot to do in cementing shareholder confidence which shaken during the crisis. He is also expected to prove the International Monetary Fund (IMF) wrong for claiming the bank poses a major threat to Africa’s financial stability.

The boardroom crisis of 2013 over outstanding debts owed by businesses associated with its chairman, Kolapo Lawson led to the sack of chief executive Thierry Tanoh and the election of a new board. The Financial Times reported that Nigeria’s Central Bank (CBN) told Ecobank in April 2013 of then Chairman Kolapo Lawson’s alleged failure to pay N1.4 billion naira owed to the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (Amcon). Tanoh was also said to have failed as CEO to inform the board of the debt.

About four months later, the board sacked Laurence do Rego, ETI’s executive director of finance and risk, who had earlier been accused by Tanoh of falsifying some of her qualifications. She reacted to her sack by sending a letter to Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) alleging that Lawson and Tanoh were attempting to sell non-core assets below market values. She also accused them of attempting to manipulate ETI’s 2012 financial results, while inflating Tanoh’s bonus.

The lender’s trouble was compounded in January 2014 when SEC’s investigation of ETI’s corporate governance practices showed “an absence of a clear vision and strategy to drive the institution, inadequate transparency in the recruitment procedures and mechanisms for Board members and executive staff which fostered conflicts of interest”.

The appointment of Essien in March was therefore a breath of fresh air for the company, with investments from QNB and Nedbank soon following. Essien has successfully cleared most of the mess he met when he became CEO, but the bank’s image remains tainted with allegations of poor corporate governance and its repeated sourcing capital to fund operations.

Hopes are high within the Ecobank board that Ayeyemi is the right man to lead the lender through the next phase of its development and beyond as a world-class pan-African bank. “Ade is a truly outstanding individual with deep knowledge of banking across Africa, and we welcome him to the Board,” Ecobank Group Chairman Emmanuel Ikazoboh, said.

As at 12:58 GMT, ETI’s shares on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) sold at N21.80 per share and GHs0.37 on the Ghana Stock Exchange.
