Perisic: Inter Must Call On Coppa Italia Spirit

Featured Image

Ivan Perisic has stated he hopes Inter channel the spirit of their Coppa Italia to the Serie A.

Inter were absolutely stunning in the match against Juventus, winning 3-0 and forcing penalties.

Unfortunately, Juventus won by 5-3 in penalties and Perisic wants more attention on Serie A.

However, Perisic, who scored Inter’s second goal on the night, wants them to use the positives to resurrect their quest for Champions League qualification.

“We spoke together before the game and we knew we had to fight for this shirt so that all the fans could be proud of us. We have to carry on like this now,” the Croatian told Inter Channel.

“We’ve been through a tricky spell and dropped points. Now we have to fight until the end and we mustn’t forget what we did in the first part of the season.

“This is the way forward – we have to play like we did [against Juve].

“We must give it everything we’ve got over the coming games. Let’s start by winning our next two home games, then we’ll think about the six-pointer we have against Roma.”

Eboue Set To Join Sunderland

Featured Image

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Eboue is set to join Sunderland for the rest of the season.

The Ivory Coast international is set to help Sunderland avoid relegation, after he impressed Allardyce in training.

Eboue also impressed the youth coach in the match against Leicester.

“I was talking to him and he was saying that’s the first 90 minutes he’s had in more than a year,” Welsh is quoted as saying by the Mirror.

“He showed a good attitude and he looked better as the game wore on. He found his feet.

“He’s been good around the dressing room with the younger players, helping them, so I’ve got no complaints.”

After a midweek draw with Crystal Palace, the Black Cats lie 19th in the English top flight and are outside the relegation zone only on goal difference.

Scores of emaciated-looking Boko Haram fighters, begging for food have surrendered to Nigerian Forces in Northeast Zone, the military and a civilian self-defense fighter said on Wednesday.

A top ranking officer of the military said about seventy-six people including children and women gave themselves up to soldiers on Saturday in Gwoza, about 60 miles southeast of Maiduguri.

AP reported on Wednesday, that the detained members of the ferocious death cult were looking emaciated as they were spotted begging for food.

The officer, who craved anonymity, said that all the detainees are currently being held at military headquarters in Maiduguri, the birthplace of Boko Haram and currently the command center of the war against the Islamic extremists.

Upon interrogation, the detainees said many more fighters want to surrender, a self-defense civilian fighter who helped escort them to Maiduguri told The Associated Press.

Food shortages could indicate that Nigeria’s military is succeeding in choking supply routes of the Islamic extremists who have taken their fight across Nigeria’s borders.

Major Takeaways From President Buhari’s Trips To Saudi Arabia And Qatar – Garba Shehu

Featured Image

At the invitation of King Salman Bin-Abdulaziz al-Saud of Saudi Arabia and of the Ruler of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad al-Thani, President Muhammadu Buhari undertook state visits to the two Middle-Eastern states between February 22nd and 29th.

As expected, there is much healthy anxiety at home about the outcomes of these visits.

For many citizens, their expectation is for the benefits of these visits to reach them in Sokoto, Calabar, Owerri or Akure before the President gets home after the engagements. There are good reasons for this anticipation.

The president had given impetus to and focus on strategic foreign bilateral relationships to overcome Nigeria’s infrastructure deficit at a time when oil revenues have fallen by 70 percent.

This strategy draws from the enormous goodwill his election in 2015 has brought to the country. Knowing how terrible things were for Nigeria in the past, the world seems quite happy with us for having a president with an incredible reputation of personal integrity.

Considering our past missed opportunities, some have called this our last chance. The president calls it our best chance to shake off the shackles of poverty and underdevelopment. He set out to achieve three to four broad objectives. One was, of course, to strengthen relations between these Arab states and Nigeria.

In his various speeches, the president made clear his wish to enhance the age-old relations between our nations and the various peoples of these nations built on the foundations of shared values and interests.

A matter for immediate concern to him was the wobbly state of the oil market and his inherent belief that he could rally the support of these two major oil and gas producing countries towards the return of a more stable market and better pricing of oil in the international markets. “Why produce more, to earn less, instead of producing less to earn more?” was his constant refrain.

The president sought to persuade the Saudis and the Qatari to invest and cooperate in Nigerian development priorities, especially in the critical sectors of power, infrastructure, agriculture, mining and manufacturing.

And as he did wherever he visited, he looked out for the Nigerian Diaspora. Nigerians jubilantly crowded the meetings with the president in both Riyadh and Doha. They spoke of their love for him and the work he is doing in the fight against corruption and terrorism. The problems they have, which they brought to him, were not new or different from what he had met with other Nigerians elsewhere.

Nigerian professionals face enormous challenges getting visas for family members to join them abroad; and there are difficulties in getting Nigerian passport renewals in the country’s foreign missions, warranted by the acute shortages of passport booklets; and also the numerous grievances against frequent police arrest and sometimes deportation without the interventions of the Nigerian missions in these countries.

Nigerians in Saudi Arabia and Qatar equally want electoral reforms that would allow them to vote at their current locations in future national elections.

It is important that the president obtained the nodding agreement of both countries to stand together for a more stable market and better pricing for oil and gas. Together, they agreed, however, that more can be achieved by working together with independent producers outside the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

True to their words, the Saudis made a pronouncement on the issue and the market has positively responded, even if marginally so. Oil price is up by a few percentage points.

President Buhari has also obtained commitments of investment from the states, on the one hand through their enormously well-endowed Sovereign Wealth Funds and, on the other, from Saudi and Qatari industrialists interested in investing billions of dollars in the Nigerian economy. The signed agreements with Qatar on the protection of investment and avoidance of multiple taxation is helpful in paving the way for the coming investments.

The other agreement on Bilateral Services Agreement (BASA) bears the imprint of Nigeria’s ambition of transforming into the international travel hub for West-Africa’s 400 million people. The Qatari Emir gave a prompt directive for support and collaboration with Nigeria on the plans to restart a national airline and a further development of airports infrastructure.

On security, the president made known the position of his administration to join the Islamic Military Alliance to Fight Terrorism (IMAFT). In an interview with the Qatar-based Al Jazeera TV, he made clear his intention to work with everyone and anywhere to fight terrorism. “We are victims of terrorism,” meaning we know the pain and we feel it, and that misguided sentiment will not detract him from a clear national interest.

The president conveyed condolences on behalf of himself and the nation to King Salman, The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques on the spate of deaths, including many Nigerians, in the course of last year’s Hajj pilgrimage.

He took note of the new concessions the Saudis have given Nigeria, among which is the increase in Umrah slots and asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON) to request for more Hajj slots. He equally wants to see Nigerians pay less for their Umrah.

Clearly, the president seemed impressed by the willingness on the part of the Saudis to discuss all outstanding issues with Nigeria. Our side to the continuing discussions have 17 consular and other matters connected to the Umrah and Hajj.

Determined to give meaning to his expressed determination to produce enough food for the teeming population, bridge the infrastructure gap and put in place measures for the diversification of the economy now precariously over-dependent on oil, the president returned home with a promise to set up a cabinet committee to identify some protects of priority to the nation.

These priority projects, when identified, will be evaluated and costed, and thereafter placed for the consideration of the sovereign wealth authorities of the two states. It is hoped that once the states lead the way, the private sector in both countries will come in tow.

With the president promising to provide all the necessary support, both the Saudi and Qatari Chambers of Commerce and Industry are expected to visit Abuja in the course of this year.

The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) which met with the president presented a dazzling array of opportunities to assist in mobilising domestic and external resources to finance Nigeria’s investment programme in the wake of a widening funding gap.

The Bank has offered to support the Federal Ministry of Finance in mobilising resources from Arab Countries through assistance in organising an Arab donor financing roundtable in Abuja. It will leverage its traditional partners in the Arab Coordination Group (such as the Saudi Fund, the Kuwait Fund, BADEA, the Abu Dhabi Fund, etc.) in order to increase the quantum of funding available to the country.
The IDB has equally offered assistance to the Government of Nigeria in facilitating a proposed Sukuk Bond issuance programme, aimed at mobilising domestic and external resources to finance Nigeria’s investment programme. The Central Bank of Nigeria and the Debt Management Office are in a discussion with the IDB on this idea.

In another breath, the IDB Group is committing itself to helping to mobilise investments from private businesses in Arab countries to assist in the development of solid minerals and commercial agriculture.

In the meeting with the Organisation of Islamic States (OIC), the president obtained assurances of support for the resettlement and rehabilitation of of the more than two million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in various camps in the North-East.

In line with his observation that it is only by educating people properly about Islam that terrorists will be deprived of legitimacy and a basis for the recruitment of followers, the OIC accepted the president’s request to partner with Nigerians in bringing a good knowledge and understanding of the Islamic religion.

The above snapshot may not represent a 360-degree view of all the things that happened; for instance, the Qatari who are being sought after by nations eying their reserve funds have shown interest in Nigeria’s favourable demographics and infrastructure deficit. The low-hanging fruit was ignored because a past president refused to visit. President Buhari’s visit has deepened the enthusiasm of the Saudis and the Qatari in investing in Nigeria. The most important challenge before him now is in packaging proposals acceptable to both sides, for business to start.

Garba Shehu is senior special assistant on Media and Publicity to President Buhari.

Zoe Saldana As Nina Simone: Heavy Criticism Follows Biopic’s Trailer

Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone – A trailer has been released for the biopic of African-American singer Nina Simone, and it has drawn widespread criticism.

Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone

Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone

The criticism comes from the face that Simone is being played by actress Zoe Saldana, who is Dominican and Puerto Rican by birth.

Simone’s daughter, Kelly, had criticized the decision when it was first announced in 2012, saying: “I love Zoe Saldana, we all love Zoe… From Avatar to Colombiana, I’ve seen those movies a few times. But not every project is for everybody. And I know what my mother would think. I just don’t get it…”

Following the release of the trailer, Nina Simone’s Twitter account tweeted it’s displeasure at it.

Saldana had last year admitted that she didn’t think she was a perfect fit for the role, but added, “I don’t think Elizabeth Taylor was right for Cleopatra either… An artist is colourless, genderless…”

Only yesterday, Saldana had tweeted a Nina Simone quote, but the official account had shut her down once again.

What do you think? Should a Hispanic actress play an African-American legend? Watch the trailer for Nina below.

Spalletti Wants Roma To Continue Fine Form

Featured Image

Luciano Spalletti is happy with Roma’s run of form and wants them to continue as they look to take on Fiorentina on Friday.

Roma has enjoyed a good run of form since January 30, winning six games in a row and moving to third place over Fiorentina in the process.

With just 11 games remaining, Roma are looking to force themselves into the top two and with Napoli five points ahead, it looks possible.

And Spalletti says he has full belief Roma can reduce that deficit even further when they play hosts to Fiorentina at Stadio Olimpico, but has warned his players they’ll need to step up.

“Fiorentina are good at anticipating the way the opposition play and tweaking their approach accordingly,” he said. “We’ll need to be better than ever against them, but I have faith in the players.

“The lads have been brilliant in our last few games. They have grown in mental strength to be able to fight for the position we currently occupy in the league table from now until the end of the season.

“We are now on the right track. We have to give 100 per cent and always try to improve. That goes for me too.

“Everyone who works here are professionals in their area of expertise. Everyone works well and you need to be brave enough to try things.

“Everyone needs to reach for the stars and try to stay there – that way we won’t stay rooted to the spot and we can aim high.”

Roma, who won at Fiorentina back in October, have not lost to Viola in Serie A since 2012.

In his ruling, the presiding judge, Justice Anwuli Chikere, stated that Mr. Moro was given bail on self-recognition, and without conditions.

Justice Chikere, who ruled that two other defendants should pay N100 million each with a surety in like sum, also declared that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) failed to prove that Mr. Moro would interfere with his trial.

The judge maintained that the sureties must be of the directorate cadre in the civil service.

He said the sureties and the defendants are to submit two recent passports as well as their international passports, and the sureties must also have landed properties worth the amount in any part of the country.

Moro was docked alongside three others by the anti-graft agency on an 11-count charge bordering on money laundering by obtaining ₦676.6 million from 676,675 job seekers in the fatal Nigerian Immigration Service recruitment exercise in 2014.

Part of the charges read: “One of the accused Mahmood Ahmadu(who is at large) in connivance with Drexel Tech Nigeria Ltd, lavished the total of N423,800,000.00(Four Hundred and Twenty Three Million, Eight Hundred Thousand naira) part of the N676,675,000 (Six Hundred and Seventy Six Million, Six Hundred and Seventy Five Thousand Naira) gotten from the applicants on the following: the sum N202, 500, 000( Two Hundred and Two Million Five Hundred Thousand naira ) in purchase of a property in a choice area of the Federal Capital territory, N120, 100,000 (One Hundred and twenty Million One hundred Thousand Naira ) used in upgrading a property in Abuja, while the total of N101, 200, 000( One Hundred and One Million Two Hundred thousand Naira) was converted to United states dollars for personal use.”

The embattled former Interior Minister was earlier held at the Kuje prison in Abuja pending the determination of his bail application.

During his detention, Anastasia Daniel-Nwobia, a former permanent secretary in the Ministry of Interior, was permitted to continue her administrative bail.

Meanwhile, the presiding judge has fixed April 27, for the commencement of trial.

BREAKING: Ex-CDS, Badeh Cries ‘Persecution’ As Court Shifts Arraignment To March 7

Featured Image

The immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh has debunked allegations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that he was involved in theft of money meant for purchase of arms, describing his current detention by the Commission as “persecution”.

READ ALSO: Arms Deal Scam: EFCC Detains Ex-CDS Alex Badeh After 8-Hour Grilling

This is coming as the Federal High Court in Abuja has rescheduled his prosecution on 10 counts of money laundering till March 7, 2016.

The arraignment was initially billed to hold before Justice Okon Abang on Thursday, but had to be shifted because of the absence of the judge, who was said to be on an official trip outside Abuja.

Meanwhile, the embattled Badeh, who has been detained by the EFCC for more than three weeks, said in a statement today, Thursday that he was being subjected to “media trial” for no just cause.

The statement read in full:

It has been widely reported in the news that I am being investigated over the $2.1 Billion Arms deal but that is not true. I was not part of Dasuki gate.

The claim that 5 properties were acquired for me from the $2.1billion funds is also false.

I was Chief of Air staff from Oct 2012 to January 2014 and then appointed CDS. During my time serving as the CDS, funds for weapons were directly released to the Chief of Air staff, army staff and naval staff and not to me. I had no control over the funds and yet I am being accused of embezzling weapons funds.

The office of the CDS had no operational control of the services and had nothing to do with their spending.

The EFCC’s claim that I received $800,000 from my Director of Finance and accounts is untrue. I did not receive such money from the erstwhile DFA. If he claims to have given me money, where is the proof? Was it paid into my account? Did I sign for it?

In the case of the properties, if they claim the properties are mine and were obtained illegally through proxies then they should go to the court and get an order of forfeiture rather than trying to insist I am the owner of the properties.

It is unfortunate that the media has unwittingly allowed itself to be used by interested parties to become judge jury and executioner in my case.

Even when they claimed billions were found in accounts of wives of some past Air Force officers, none was found with my family yet EFCC keeps generalizing and making it look like my family is involved too.

It is rather unfortunate that the nation which I fought so hard within my means to defend against Boko Haram insurgents cannot guarantee my fundamental human rights.

During my time as the CDS, lives of both soldiers and civilians were lost. Territories were lost. We fought to regain our nation’s territorial integrity and the insurgents pushed back.

I LOST MY PERSONAL HOUSE AND HOSPITAL IN DEFENCE OF MY FATHERLAND (A hospital which I built many years ago and was equally used in the treatment of injured soldiers). NOW I AM LOSING MY FREEDOM TO THE SAME FATHERLAND THAT I FOUGHT SO HARD TO DEFEND

During the 2014 Boko haram attack on my village Vimtim, it was widely reported in the media that I sent a helicopter to evacuate my parents and relatives. Which parents? I am an orphan, I lost my father in the 70’s and my mother in 2013. My cousin, who lived next to me, was killed during the 2014 attack on my village. So who exactly did I evacuate? It is unfortunate that I didn’t come out to clarify some of these issues when they were reported in the media.

I was detained by EFCC for 3 weeks and was not charged to court but was given onerous bail conditions by the Commission which I could not meet. A remand warrant was hastily obtained on the 25th February in Lagos as soon as The EFCC was served with a notice for my bail hearing in court by my lawyers. Why detain me for so long and issue such onerous bail conditions when they aren’t ready to charge me to court?

I reported to the EFCC when I was invited and would report anytime I am needed. All I ask for is to be given a fair hearing with the rule of law strictly adhered to.

It is a media trial and I am being persecuted.

Ikorodu Kidnap: Abductors Slash Ransom To ₦20m Per Student

Featured Image

Strong indications have emerged on Wednesday that the thugs who raided Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary, Ikorodu, Lagos, Monday night, kidnapping three Senior Secondary School female students have reduced the ransom to ₦20 million per student.

According to information gathered, the militants turned vandals got the phone number of one of the girls’ fathers and asked for the ransom.

It was gathered that the kidnappers agreed to ₦20 million following passionate pleas by their contact in the school, as the initial amount demanded as at Tuesday evening was ₦100 million for each student.

The school, which is linked to the Anglican Church, is reportedly one of the best and most expensive in Lagos state and is mostly attended by children of politicians and wealthy individuals.

This is just as another female Senior Secondary School student narrated how she escaped being caught by the gunmen.

Narrating her ordeal in tears she said: “We were reading for our test billed for Tuesday morning, that night when we heard the first gun shot. We ignored it, thinking it was fire crackers. Then, another shot followed. At that point, we were scared . One of us jokingly said, ‘those people that attempted to strike the other day have come o.‘ Hearing that, I froze and started praying.

“Before we could think of the next thing to do, three SSS1 students ran into our class room, screaming: Robbers! We all ran out in our confused states, only to bump into four armed men. We ran back towards the window, where we struggled to jump out from. At that point, one of the gunmen held my cloth from behind. In my attempt to free myself from his grips, a student fell down. He (gunman) left me and held the student that fell by the leg, while I ran with all my strength until I got to the hostel.”

As at yesterday, academic activities were placed on hold as students were ordered to remain in their hostels, with strict instruction not to speak to anyone about the incident.

Some aggrieved parents who pleaded anonymity blamed the management of the school for lack of adequate security.

According to them, the school management had been urged several times to raise the fence at the School of Science and Technology, but the suggestion was ignored.

Meanwhile, the Commanding Officer, 174 battalion, Nigerian Army in Ikorodu, Lagos, Lt. Colonel Julius Ogbobe, has ordered his soldiers to comb every nook and cranny for the hoodlums involved in the kidnap saga.

Similarly, the Lagos State Police Command stated that investigation as well as rescue efforts were still ongoing. It, however, did not explain the form of the rescue operation, saying it could jeopardize efforts made so far.

Mertesacker: Arsenal Loss Is Not The End Of The World

Featured Image

Arsenal captain and defender, Per Mertesacker insists the 2-1 loss to Swansea is not the end of the world.

The loss puts Arsenal six points behind surprise title challengers and EPL leaders Leicester City.

Mertesacker states his teammates were nervous during the match, but hopes to record a win over Tottenham on Saturday.

“We tried really hard,” Mertesacker told Sky Sports.

“The effort was there tonight. We played quite well but always missed the last pass and hit the post a couple of times, but it’s not the end of the world.

“We wanted a better result than against Manchester United, but it was the small margins that cost us.

“We lost the game on one set piece and we needed to defend better. You could feel that we were nervous out there at the end of the game.

“We have to recover quickly before Saturday and that’s the only thing we are thinking of.”
