Benzema Confirms Euro 2016 Absence

Featured Image

France striker and Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has confirmed he’ll be left out of the Euro 2016.

French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet and Didier Deschamps discussed his involvement, which is yet to be made public.

However, Karim Benzema tweeted he will not be in the continental competition.

Benzema was suspended by the FFF in December pending the outcome of a legal investigation into an alleged plot to blackmail fellow international Mathieu Valbuena.

The former Lyon man has been charged with complicity in an attempt to blackmail and participating in a criminal conspiracy as part of a sex-tape plot involving Valbuena, which he denies.

In March, it looked as though the 28-year-old was a step closer to a return to the France set-up when an order preventing him from meeting his international team-mate was lifted on appeal.

However, the former Lyon striker stated he will not be considered for selection after all.

“Sadly for me and for all who have backed and supported me, I will not be selected for the Euros in France,” Benzema posted on his official Twitter account.

Ibrahimovic: We Must Try To Be Consistent

Featured Image

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has stated PSG need be consistent if they want UCL glory.

PSG crashed out in the quarterfinals of the UCL for a fourth consecutive season.

After losing 1-0 and playing out a 2-2 draw in the first leg, despite winning four ligue 1 titles, PSG still want continental glory.

And Ibrahimovic, who is expected to leave Paris when his contract expires at the end of the season, thinks that will only come when the team learns to thrive under the pressure of a big occasion.

“It’s not about being ready, it’s about the moment – we have the team, the team is there, it’s about the moment,” the 34-year-old said after the defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

“Everybody is saying at the beginning of the season – ‘oh la la, oh la la’, but when the moment is there it is different.

“The season is long, I always say the season is 10 months, it’s not about one or two months. We need to be on top for the 10 months, not just one or two months.

“So if it’s ‘oh la la’ in the beginning, it has to be ‘oh la la’ for 10 months.

“That is what we talk about, it’s not about being ready or not ready.”

Woman Kidnaps Own Kids, Demands N6m Ransom From Husband

Featured Image

A certain woman, Mrs. Abigail Brown is currently being detained by the Rivers State Police Command, for allegedly taking hostage her two children in order to get ransom to the tune of N6 million from her husband.

The wicked deed was carried out with the help of her husband’s former driver, simply identified as ThankGod.

The duo, after successfully kidnapping the two children, aged 2 and 10 respectively, had hid them in her sister’s place and then they called the husband to pay a ransom to secure the children’s release.

It was gathered that luck ran out on her as she was apprehended by the police while awaiting the ransom from her husband.

Although Brown initially denied the allegation against her, she later said the act was not intentional, adding that it was frustration that made her to commit the crime.

She said, “I did it because of frustration. My husband abandoned me and my children.

“Since he left us and went away, I have been suffering with my children, and I know that he has money.

“I only did it to make him bring money for me to take care of the children we had together.”

On the N6m she demanded as ransom, she said, “I did not demand up to that amount, but I demanded money from my husband.”

On his part, ThankGod, who accepted taking part in the act, claimed that he was manipulated into being an accomplice.

He said, “She called me to help her. She told me to take the two children to her sister’s place. That is how I got involved.

“She used me to act as the kidnapper of the two children before we were arrested. She lured me into it.”

Speaking on the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Muhammad, confirmed that the suspects were in their custody, while the ‘abducted’ children were now safe.

Fuel Scarcity And A Culture Of Scapegoating – Ikeogu Oke

Featured Image

Reading some of the public commentaries – and other forms of reactions – on the current fuel crisis and associated issues, I was reminded of why I opposed the controversial call to kill the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) made last year by a prominent Nigerian politician. The politician reportedly summed up his justification for the call with the words: “If you don’t kill the NNPC, it will kill Nigeria.”

The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Clearly, those words should incline all patriotic Nigerians to see the country’s survival and theirs as dependant on their killing NNPC at a time when, due to various factors, its popularity was arguably at its nadir.

Prominent among those factors were allegations of massive corruption and chronic mismanagement. And since we would naturally like to survive together with our country, and be rid of things that pose a fatal threat to our joint existence (as the call implies about NNPC), I believe the politician in question expected us to accept the kill-or-be-killed scenario he created and act like people who understand that self-preservation is the first law of nature. An instance of the instigation or blackmail to kill for supposed self-preservation couldn’t have been more subtle or effective to the discerning mind.

Now, one of such public commentaries is Moses E. Ochonu’s “Dr. Kachikwu’s Blunders” – published recently in SaharaReporters and Premium Times – which more or less sums up the predicament of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources in managing the current fuel scarcity in the country thus: “Whatever he is doing is not working. In fact it is clearly making things worse. Insulting Nigerians with glib comments about not being a magician only compounds his predicament…. Kachikwu has no one but himself to blame. The man thrives on deception and propaganda…. He deserves whatever opprobrium is heaped on him.”

Let me say en passant that this sort of criticism is too harsh and demoralising. The function of the responsible social critic is to build hope while identifying problems, and not to demoralise. Ochonu’s criticism demoralises by its unjustified total condemnation of its target and his efforts, and by spreading despair.

And by other forms of reactions, I refer to such call made by the leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on the Network News of the Africa Independent Television (AIT) on April 11, 2016, asking for the minister’s resignation.

Well, I argued in my response to the call to kill NNPC that, whatever the problem with NNPC, our interest as a nation is better served by reforming rather than killing it.

In fact, I was convinced that killing NNPC would amount to turning the organisation into a corporate scapegoat, sacrificing the life of one institution to “atone” for perennial sins plaguing our entire nation, like corruption, short-termism and a poor maintenance culture.

And I do not see how such scapegoating can solve any of the problems to which it has become a habitual reaction with some of us. Rather, it has always seemed to me like slaughtering a sacrificial victim to appease some fetish of activist hypocrisy that would rather not take cognisance of the complexity and resilience of such problems because it serves some vested interests while pretending not to do so.

And I see the call for Dr. Ibe Kachikwu’s resignation by Chief Bola Tinubu, which serves as a background for Ochonu’s unsparing criticism of the former – and the similar call by the ASUU leadership – as fresh instigations to lead yet another sacrificial victim, a human scapegoat rather than corporate one like NNPC, to the altar of the same fetish.

And I wonder if Ochonu and the ASUU executive recognise how long the problems leading to the current fuel scarcity have lasted with our tolerance as a people, like a pustule growing under the skin of a negligent person who only begins to take note and complain after it has grown into a big boil and ruptured, causing them serious discomfort. After which they blame the physician who may well be doing his best to bring them relief or cure that he is “making things worse” and not acting fast enough.

For instance, in the past sixteen years before Dr. Kachikwu assumed office as Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, billions were spent on the “turn around maintenance” of our refineries by successive governments. Specifically, $1.6 billion (about N251 billion) was reportedly voted for the turnaround maintenance of the four refineries across the country by the end of 2014. Yet, nothing seemed to have been achieved by way of truly turning the refineries around to refine enough fuel for our local consumption. Hence we have remained stuck with the shame of fuel importation – for our shores are practically awash with the natural resource from which fuel is refined. And we have continued to expend huge sums to subsidise the product, while putting up with allegations of corruption by entities involved in fuel importation, some of which border on economic sabotage.

Indeed, if anyone were to succeed in resolving this situation that has defied previous governments for nearly two decades in the roughly seven months Dr. Kachikwu has been in office, I would perhaps consider that person not as a magician – which Dr. Kachikwu rightly but tactlessly said he is not, and for which he has apologised – but as a miracle worker or superhuman.

And I am at a loss as to why some of us fail to appreciate that the current difficulties in turning our fuel situation around are worse than before, considering the harsh economic realities due to the drastic fall in oil prices, and the proportionate decline in forex earnings to support fuel importation or finance the maintenance of our refineries even in their current states. The solution, especially if it must be long-term, lies in thinking creatively and taking radical measures which I believe the current government is doing despite serious handicaps.

To adapt that famous quote by Albert Einstein, it would be madness to expect to be doing the same thing about our fuel situation and not remain in the same dissatisfactory position.

The current situation requires supportive action, understanding, patience and sacrifice from the generality of Nigerians, as one would expect from good members of a family whose breadwinner suddenly lost their job or had their wages reduced drastically; and who, not of their own making, lacks the savings to cushion the resultant hardship for the family.

Since the NNPC, our entire oil sector and the way business is done in it are undergoing reform, we must understand that the fruits of reform, like every other fruit, can taste sour until it ripens with the possibility of tasting sweet.

The real question should be: What should responsible and patriotic citizens do at a time like this – “a time that tries men’s souls,” to quote Thomas Paine?

I think the least should be to offer suggestions as to how the problems can be solved for the general good. And I do not see how calling for the resignation of Dr. Kachikwu, without guaranteeing that the problems will suddenly disappear with his resignation and replacement or criticising the government without suggesting better steps than those being taken by it, qualifies as a solution to the problems.

Curiously, some of these calls are coming even after Dr. Kachikwu has unveiled a holistic blueprint for reversing the current situation and working towards a lasting solution, as in the story entitled “My Story, by Kachikwu,” published on page 6 of Daily Sun of April 2, 2018, which he should be supported to implement rather than harassed with excessive censure.

Martinez Confirms No Dressing Room Upset

Featured Image

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has denied talk of dressing room unrest at the club.

The Spanish manager has come under fire for Everton’s poor run of form, as they look to finish below fourth for a second consecutive season.

But Martinez insists the relationship between himself and his charges has not broken down as a result of the club’s poor top-flight campaign.

“The manager needs to make the decisions, and the players need to enjoy their job and enjoy their talent and do the things that the team needs every individual to do in order to win,” he said.

“It just isn’t the case that the relationship between the manager and players is a problem. That has never been an issue.

“Remember that we are not talking about a bad team here, or a team that doesn’t perform. We are talking about a team that performs really well away from home, yet doesn’t get the results at home.

“That doesn’t suggest the relationship between the manager and the players is wrong.”

China has offered Nigeria a loan worth $6bn to fund projects.

Addressing pressmen after the conclusion of a meeting in connection to that, Onyeama said that the deal does not necessarily mean that China will credit Nigerian banks with the money; rather it will be tied to specific projects and will only be released when it’s time to cash back the projects.

He said, “It is a credit that is on the table as soon as we identify the projects, we access the facility,”

Furthermore, no agreements were signed. Once the Nigerian government identifies a project, the Chinese counterpart will then provide the funding.

“It won’t need an agreement to be signed; it is just to identify the projects and we will access it,” Onyeama said.

In the same vein, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed that the Chinese President, Xi Jinping has offered a $15m agricultural grant to Nigeria for the establishment of 50 demonstration farms across the country.

“The Chinese government has offered to raise its scholarship awards to Nigerian students from about 100 to 700 annually, while 1,000 other Nigerians would be given vocational and technical training annually.

“China also expressed an interest in setting up major projects in Nigeria such as refineries, power plants, mining companies, and textile manufacturing and food processing industries as soon as the enabling environment is provided by the Federal Government,” Shehu stated.

Nigerians have taken to social media to express their different views on the development, check below.

According to a spokesman for Suwon Prosecutors’, who announced the investigation into the suspected breach, the alleged vote-buying took place in Suwon, 30 kilometers south of Seoul.

“We have yet to verify the allegations. If confirmed, this could constitute a breach of election law,” he said.

Vote-buying in South Korea carries a sentence of up to five years in prison or a fine of 10 million won ($8,750).

Erectile dysfunction drugs are a prescription medication in South Korea and prosecutors will investigate how the unnamed candidate was allegedly in possession of so many, the Dong-A Ilbo daily said.

Anyone found guilty of vote-buying risks being stripped of their election victory, while voters face fines of up to 50 times the value of the cash or gift they received in return for supporting the candidate.

Blanc: PSG Must Keep Faith

Featured Image

PSG must keep faith in their quest for European glory, according to manager Laurent Blanc.

PSG were knocked out of the quarterfinals for the fourth year in a row, with De Bruyne handing City a 3-2 aggregate win.

However, the former France boss does not believe a radical overhaul is required and urged supporters not to lose heart of PSG’s ambitions to take their domestic dominance to the European stage.

Asked whether this team had passed up its last chance of Champions League success, Blanc told a post-match news conference: “No, you should never say that.

“Some teams thought that were never every going to win after 10 years of knocking on the door and then finally they won, so we shouldn’t say that at all.

“Certainly we’re going to have to ask ourselves a lot of questions and come up with good answers to those questions as well.

“We have to look at that but not right now because we are so disappointed and angry. We truly believed we could quality. Those were not empty words.”

Real Madrid overcame a 2-0 first-leg deficit to beat Wolfsburg in Tuesday’s other semi-final, with Barcelona and Bayern Munich favourites to join them and City in Friday’s draw.

Blanc believes only one outsider per year can realistically dream of reaching the last four, such is the power of Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern.

“There are always three clubs who are in the semi-finals and then there is a guest club – this year the guest club is Manchester City so well done to them,” he added.

“We didn’t do enough in tonight’s game, we fell short across the board. The City players were very physical and imposed their physicality upon us.”

TUC Gives FG 14-Day Ultimatum To Fish Out Killers Of UNIPORT Student

Trade Union Congress (TUC), has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to institute a probe on identifying killers of a student of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) during Monday’s protest against reported increase in tuition fees by the management of the institution.

The congress conveyed this in a statement signed by the chairman of Rivers State chapter, Mr Chika Unuegbu.

The statement read: “The TUC, Rivers State, condemns in its entirety, the unwarranted killing of a student of the University of Port Harcourt during a peaceful protest. We are worried that if these unarmed protesting students could be killed in cold blood, then there is no guarantee that protesting workers or citizens will not be killed.

“We call on the authorities of the University of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, the Inspector General of Police and the Minister of Education to as a matter of urgency identify and prosecute those who killed the student. We note that students all over the world have the right to protest. And as a matter of fact, the right to peaceful protest is protected by the Nigerian constitution.

“We want to state categorically that if after 14 days our demand is not met, we shall convene an emergency TUC State Council meeting and invite the State Council to take a decision on this matter including the decision to withdraw the services of all our members in Rivers State.

“We appeal to all parents, civil society organisations and people of good conscience to rise up against unwarranted and cold blooded killings in the country.”

In a related development, the Rivers State Police Command, on Wednesday, stood its ground that none of its men shot any student during the protest.

Ranieri: Five More Tough Matches To Go

Featured Image

Despite sitting top of the table and seven points clear, Ranieri is wary of five tough matches still to come for Leicester.

West Ham, Swansea City, Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea are the teams left for Leicester to play.

Three wins from five matches will hand them the EPL, no matter what Tottenham do.

But Ranieri says there is still work to do.

“It’s not done yet,” he said. “We are in the Champions League – at least, in the preliminary round of the Champions League.

“But the last five tests will be terrible. Tottenham didn’t give up and we have to stay focused.”

Ranieri was visibly emotional after Leicester’s 2-0 win over Sunderland, appearing to shed a tear or two, but the Italian said he would try to contain his emotions for the rest of the title run-in.

“They were not real tears. They were unshed tears. It was a moment of emotion,” he said.

“To see all those people around us, entire families on the buses with the Leicester shirts, who have followed us up to Sunderland, it struck me deeply.

“You realise, in these cases, the extraordinary power of football. When our sport manages to pull off this positivity, you cannot remain indifferent.”

Reps Discard Bill Seeking To Reduce Political Parties To 5

Featured Image

Members of the House of Representatives, on Tuesday, rejected an amendment bill seeking to reduce the number of political parties in the country from the over 30 that are presently registered by INEC to five.

The proposed law titled: ‘A bill for an act to alter section 40 of the constitution of FRN, 1999 Cap. C23 laws of the federation of Nigeria, 2004 to limit number of political parties to five and other related matters (HB 418)’ which led to a debate in the house was sponsored by Ali Mohammed Wudil (APC, Kano).

The bill, according to Wudil, seeks to allow for a manageable number of political parties that could be structured toward exerting maximum impact during electioneering periods.

He said: “This is the 7th amendment, by and large, to allow other four parties to exist along side the party which is currently in power.

“Some parties are not fit to be called parties at all by the sheer pronunciation of their names, the structure of their offices and leadership component, and as such should be removed by the provision of the amendment bill.”

The proposed law was killed by voice vote as majority of lawmakers present rejected the amendment, following a question by Speaker Yakubu Dogara.

Zidane: Ronaldo Needs His Teammates

Featured Image

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane believes Cristiano Ronaldo needs the help of his teammates, after he helped them to the semifinals of the UCL.

Madrid went into the second leg with a 2-0 deficit, but Ronaldo’s hat trick secured the victory and progress for Zidane’s men.

Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 15th minute and less than 90 seconds later Madrid were level on aggregate courtesy of a near-post header from the Portugal international.

The former Manchester United star completed the comeback in style 13 minutes from time with a chipped free-kick, leaving Zidane to marvel at his abilities.

“What can I say about Cristiano Ronaldo? He has showed again he is the best player in the world. He is a special player,” Zidane said.

“But at same time, Cristiano needs all the team. What we want, what he wants, is to speak of the team, what they have done together.”

On his team’s overall performance, Zidane added: “What we had to do was to show intensity, but also use our heads. My message, above all, was to have patience.

“I am very happy, and very proud of all they did tonight. It was a special night, we have achieved what we were looking for.

“The players came from 2-0 down. So it was my best night as a coach, so far, for sure.”
