Report : No Agreement Reached Between Manchester United And Jose Mourinho

Featured Image

According to Sky Sports News HQ no agreement has been reached between Manchester United and Jose Mourinho over the manager’s job at Old Trafford.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss is reportedly keen on the post should United look to replace Louis van Gaal in the summer.

Speculation continues to surround Van Gaal’s future despite the Dutchman leading United to their first FA Cup final for 12 years and with them still in contention for place in next season’s Champions League.

Sky sources report that  United’s executive chairman Ed Woodward is still mulling over whether Van Gaal will see out the remaining 12 months of his three-year contract.

Report : Pato To Remain At Chelsea

Featured Image

Corinthians are expecting Alexandre Pato to remain at Chelsea next season, this is according to Sky Sports Sources.

Sources at the Brazilian club claim that Antonio Conte is an admirer of the former AC Milan striker, who has made just two appearances for the Blues since arriving on loan in January.

They are, however, uncertain at this stage if it will be another loan move.

Pato scored from the penalty spot on his debut – a 4-0 win at Aston Villa – before facing Swansea the following week.

Last week the Corinthians President Roberto de Andrade said his club would welcome Pato back if Chelsea decide not to extend his spell in London.

Ranieri Believes This Is Leicester’s Only Chance

Featured Image

Claudio Ranieri has stated Leicester have this one chance to win the EPL.

Leicester could claim the title if they win against United or if Tottenham lose against Chelsea on Monday.

And despite the magnitude of the occasion, Ranieri says he is feeling calm and that Leicester are approaching their game with Louis van Gaal’s United like any other.

“Now is the real chance to win the title,” Ranieri said. “Next season, you never know. It is once in a lifetime.

“Next season, United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal will all be at the top.

“But we are fighting. I am pragmatic man and we need three points more.

“We are fighting to make this dream a reality, but it isn’t yet. I can understand all the happiness around the city, but we have to work.

“Sunday will be a very tough match and I have a lot of respect for Louis van Gaal and their fans, but we go with the same mentality.

“It is like the Hollywood movies. We want a happy ending.

“I am relaxed because I watch my players. They train well, enjoy and help each other. It’s important to prepare well.”

Featured Image

Tottenham manager, Mauricio Pochettino is keeping faith that his men can still win the EPL.

Tottenham face Chelsea on Monday, with Leicester looking to confirm their triumph on Sunday against United.

Spurs will be without the suspended Dele Alli for the trip to Stamford Bridge and Eric Dier faces a late fitness test to see if he has fully recovered from his concussion.

But Pochettino, who confirmed he has verbally agreed a new contract tying him to the club until 2021, says Spurs can still win the league.

“The gap is seven points and there are nine points still to play for,” Pochettino said.

“It’s difficult, but we need to believe. The most important thing is to win our games.

“Belief is the most important word in football. You must work hard and have a clear plan.

“We still believe and dream but in the same way we are realistic.

“The gap is big, but we need to fight, pick up points to stay alive.”

Spurs’ task was made all the harder by this week’s 1-1 draw against West Brom at White Hart Lane.

Will.I.Am Releases New ‘I.Am Plus Dial’ Wearable Phone Wristwatch

Featured Image

Former Black Eyed Peas member and music producer, Will.I.Am has produced his latest (need we mention, second) attempt at a wearable phone wristwatch he has dubbed ‘I.Am + Dial’.

The musician’s latest stab at the gadget industry is designed as a smartwatch that functions fully as a phone. The gadget has been described as a ‘wrist-worn, phone-free’ wearable hand device.

The Dial is  promoted by the British network Three, at a starting price of £19 (that’s roughly $28 or N7,600).

After that the user follows up with a two-year contract at roughly £25 per month (in the price range of $35 or N10,000).

The Naira equivalents are with the Nigerian unstable exchange rate of at most N400 per pound. It’s yet to be confirmed if the device will be available outside the UK.

The Dial comes with its own 3G SIM card, providing the chance to make a phone call, text and email from one’s wrist. It can also connect to Wi-Fi, though it has no 4G.

It doesn’t have a screen to dial numbers or texts on. All it has is a 1.63-inch AMOLED screen on the watch which comes with a built-in voice-activated system called AneedA, pronounced as in “I need a…”

The user speaks into AneedA for texts and phone calls and the voice-activated system does the rest.

This isn’t Will.I.Am’s first time in the invention market as some of his past products such as his Foto.sosho iPhone case, a triangular speaker backpack and a collaboration with Gucci that never materialised, have caused many to doubt this will be any different.

Still, in the spirit of support, the I.Am + Dial gadget is up for preorder in the UK now.

Oba Of Benin, Omo n’Oba Erediauwa Akpolokpolo I, Passes Away

Featured Image

The Oba of Benin, Omo n’Oba Erediauwa Akpolokpolo I, is reported dead.

His death was announced by the Iyase of Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe.

The late monarch has been battling an unknown illness since last year. A statement issued by the Edo State Government and obtained by Premium Times read:

“Our hearts are heavy, laden with pains and grief, at the announcement of the passing on to glory of Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Erediauwa of Benin, our highly revered Oba, a distinguished Edo numero uno, an accomplished Nigerian, a seasoned bureaucrat, quintessential unifier, unique personage and exemplary Omo N’Oba, whose reign brought distinction, immense class, finesse and integrity to traditional institution in Edo state and the country at large.

“His carriage comes with an élan that was peculiar with the reverence of royalty. His uncommon courage was symbolic of the can-do spirit of the Edo mind. His unity of purpose was not in doubt even as he used his revered position to promote constructive engagement amongst all shades of opinion and culture in Edo state.

“As a thorough-bred bureaucrat, rising to the pinnacle of his career as a Federal Permanent Secretary, he understood the dynamics and intricacies of governance. He was the alternative voice to the many voiceless in our society, calling government attention to issues of development and transparent governance, without minding whose ox is gored. He was brave, fearless, punchy and instructive in his verbal and written messages.

“To us at the Edo state Government, he was our strongest supporter; both in his uncommon faith in our ability and his readiness to offer uncommon advice to sharpen public discourse in our shared commitment to transform Edo state. It gladdens our heart, therefore, that our revered Oba was alive to witness the positive transformation of Edo state under his reign, and for standing with us through thick and thin in the course of making the Edo economy a treasure to behold. Being part of that eloquent history of transformation before his reunion with his ancestors gives us further reassurance that he will occupy a special pride of place in the hereafter.

“We are enveloped with a deep sense of nostalgia that our great Oba, a great-grandfather, grandfather, father, uncle and iconoclastic royal father of exemplary carriage and conduct, who sustained the dignity of the average Edo mind, has joined his ancestors. We are, however, encouraged by the fact that another great son of the Great Benin Kingdom, His Royal Highness, Edaiken N’Uselu, Crown Prince Eheneden Erediauwa, who is already showing manifest quintessential attributes of his great father, will step into his father’s big shoes.

“Edo people will miss our iconoclastic royal father of the great Benin Kingdom. Nigerians and Nigeria will miss this great exemplar of a Royal Father, an Oba of distinction and integrity. Adieu until we meet to part no more.

“Oba gha to kpere, ise.”

Herdsmen And The New Face Of Terror – Azu Ishiekwene

Featured Image

As the country struggles to push back the murderous Boko Haram from the North-East, a new form of terror appears to be gaining ground. There were reports on Tuesday that a group of herdsmen attacked a village in Enugu, killing at least 20 people and burning down everything in their path.

The views and opinions expressed here are those of Azu Ishiekwene and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

Putting a number on the dead or a price on the property destroyed hardly does justice to the violence. To paraphrase Leo Tolstoy in Anna Karenina, each family is different in its own way and bears the stripes of adversity in its own peculiar way. The figures will never convey the depth of the grief or the magnitude of the loss, until it happens again and again and again.

And I fear it will.

Who’s next? As at Wednesday, there were unconfirmed reports that the so-called herdsmen were planning to attack Umuchigbo, a community in the Nike area of Anambra State. In February, about 300 people were killed in Agatu, Benue State, when a group, again presumed to be herdsmen, reportedly attacked some villages.

The common narrative, often reflected in press reports, appears not only straightforward but also quite enticing. It reminds me of the sort of prejudice you would often find when reading a report about Nigeria in the foreign press: it’s North vs South, Christian vs Muslim and everything else falls in between. Except that this time, the prejudice is in-bred – the local press is framing the story, not foreigners.

With hardly any proof, the herdsmen have been described as “Fulani” and the pattern of attacks lately – starting from the North-Central to the fringes of the South-West and now spreading to the South-East – is portrayed as a “jihad” by other means. A version of the story on the Enugu attack on social media on Tuesday, for example, even said the attack in Enugu happened because President Muhammadu Buhari refused to take a potentially pre-emptive call from Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, an insinuation that Ugwuanyi said was false.

The message, in between the lines, is that the all-controlling Hausa-Fulani who have now been forced to confront Boko Haram which they created as a tool to seize political power from a Southern, Christian president, have created another dangerous franchise to extend and consolidate control on other parts of the country. Who does not know that President Buhari, a Hausa-Fulani, is also a cattle farmer, an essential herdsman?

Connecting the dots could be as subtle as the PDP Benue chapter claiming that the Agatu attack was a reprisal mission for David Mark winning his rerun. Or it could also be as brazen as comments on social media that Buhari has been reluctant to use an iron fist on the herdsmen because they are his “kinsmen.”

Simple profiling of the horrendous attacks by the herdsmen may satisfy our prejudice, soothe our fears or assuage our expectations that Buhari should be doing more after one year in office. It hardly addresses the root of the problem.

In its original form, especially in the early 2000, when the problem was largely one of trespass between “indigenes” in parts of Plateau State and “non-indigenes” mostly herdsmen, it was essentially an economic issue. Landowners in the area seemed helpless in the face of the foray by herdsmen in search of pasture.

Sadly, the landowners often suffered double jeopardy – they lost their sources of livelihood and could not get justice either from the traditional rulers in their communities or from the state. Parties resorted to self-help, which according a report entitled the Geneva Declaration 2011 left over 4,000 dead between 2001 and 2008.

It doesn’t make sense to frame disputes over “grazing rights” as evidence of the hegemonic influence of any ethnic group. The biblical story of the dispute between Abraham and his cousin Lot over “grazing rights” was no more a family feud than it was an economic one. Both parties had to go their separate ways to settle the matter.

Today, “grazing rights” issues are worsened by a completely wrong cultural attitude to property rights in many developing countries. In Nigeria, for example, it could be as simple as someone reading this article over your shoulder and being upset if you raised an eye; as ridiculous as a king “taking” another man’s wife by “placing a leg on her”; or as bizarre as government claiming that it owns all lands and all that lies beneath it. Respect for personal space or private property is suspect, or at best, rudimentary.

While the world has moved on, dealing with more fundamental issues of intellectual property rights, we’re not far from where Abraham was 4,100 years ago.

And this is not a uniquely Nigerian problem. Ghana has had a running battle with herdsmen. In Kenya, constant deadly clashes between the pastoralist Maasai and other ethnic groups led to an amendment in the constitution to strengthen title ownership rights after government-instituted group ranches failed. At a point, in fact, the Maasai were not only attacking farmlands, there were also attacking game reserves to secure their herd.

Across Africa, institutions for redress of property rights – be they the police or the law courts – are still a joke. And the bigger Nigeria joke, if were not an absurdity, is for at least three major attacks claiming over 300 lives to have happened in three months without one single person standing trial. That is inexcusable.

The matter obviously needs the same seriousness with which Buhari is addressing Boko Haram, pipeline vandals and looters of the economy. The scale, audacity and sheer cruelty of the attacks suggest an organised force beyond herdsmen of any particular ethnic group. The herdsman is largely a metaphor, a red herring for something far more sinister.

More and more herdsmen driven by climatic changes, escalating violence and insecurity in the North in the last few years, have obviously pushed further south wards in search of pasture. It’s unlikely that this has been purely a migration of pastoralists. Their ranks may have been infiltrated by criminals (especially foreign ones from neigbouring countries), who have access to arms pouring in from our leaking borders.

That may not be what people want to hear but the imprint is there for those who care to see. While the government cannot afford to spare the rod, journalists may soon find they’re up against a story that may not fit the headlines they would love to cast. It’s unpardonable that not one person has so far been prosecuted for the deadly attacks, but it’s foolish to call the attacks another Hausa-Fulani jihad.

Van Gaal Won’t Let Leicester City Win League At Old Trafford

Van Gaal Won’t Let Leicester City Win League At Old Trafford – Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has no plans to let Leicester City win the league at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal Won’t Let Leicester City Win League At Old Trafford

The Foxes face United on Sunday, with Leicester City needed just 3 points to guarantee the league title. United, with time running out on them, are chasing a Champions League spot, and Van Gaal believes they have to win Leicester City if they really want to make the UCL.

Van Gaal: I’ve Done The Best I Can

“We have to close the gap so the pressure is on us still. We have to win every game that we have to play. City still have to play against Arsenal, though, so one of those shall lose points,” he told reporters.

“I think we have to beat Leicester because we are still in the race for the first positions so we have to beat them. We cannot allow that they are the champions this weekend at Old Trafford.

Herrera: United Don’t Want Leicester To Claim Title At Old Trafford

“I think they will be the champions a week later, so we don’t spoil the party, just postpone it a little bit. It is good for the Premier League and the sport of football that not always the same teams are the champion.

“We are fighting for the qualification to the Champions League and we are still in the FA Cup, so we have to fight for something and we shall do it. Hopefully, we can beat Leicester City.”

Enrique Open To Totti Move

Featured Image

Luis Enrique has stated he hopes Francesco Totti stays beyond this season at Roma, but is open to signing him.

Totti is reported to have had a falling out with coach Luciano Spalletti, over lack of playing time and has since gone on to score three goals that has put the capital club within reach of second place.

A contract extension is reported to be in the offing for the Roma icon, and Luis Enrique, who coached Totti during the 2011-12 season, would love to see that occur.

However, asked if he would consider signing the Italian in a transfer similar to that which saw Henrik Larsson join the Catalan giants aged 32 in 2004, Luis Enrique joyfully replied: “Why not? If they sell him cheap!

“Francesco Totti is the living history of Roma and I think he would like to finish his career at that club.

“It would be very strange to see him wearing another shirt, but if he wanted to then he could play for anyone. But as a bit of a Roma fan, I hope he stays there.”

Yemi Alade’s Mama Africa: Diary of an African woman is a capable dance record

Featured Image

As album titles go, Yemi Alade’s sophomore effort is as bland and unimaginative as they come. Why, when it comes to fabulous females,- living or dead- laying claim to mothering an entire continent of nations, hasn’t it all been done before? And don’t you have to do something worthwhile; culturally or politically, asides from putting out crossover hit singles to actually earn the title?

The late Mariam Makeba did her bit to end South Africa’s evil Apartheid regime. So did Brenda Fassie of blessed memory, as well as the living Yvonne Chaka Chaka, who both spoke up in song and activism for the cause of Nelson Mandela, at the time the most famous prisoner on the planet. Current Grammy darling, Angelique Kidjo has documented the stories of her native Beninoise people and marketed it to a wider audience. Any such claim for the title by her management would perhaps be understandable.

What has the 27 year old Yemi Alade done to award herself this huge title? Despite the odds stacked against her, she managed to craft a singular pop record so danceable and so melodious, it became the song that could, seeping past its Nigerian origins to find an audience all over the continent. A French version plus a string of Francophone and Swahili baiting material later, Alade has become as famous in other parts of the continent as she is at home, spending more and more time doing tours and shows across the continent. Can you blame her for thinking she is the best thing since Makeba?

And she may well be, if hit singles and shrewd packaging are the only indicators for coming to such conclusions. Who decides these things anyway?

At the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards,- a Nigerian affair if ever there was one,- Alade struggled to impress a hall packed with her compatriots with new material from Mama Africa. Na Gode, recorded with Selebobo, her comrade in arms and brains behind her biggest hit, Johnny came across as another tepid praise and worship box ticking effort. The album cut is more vibrant than Alade’s AMVCA performance made it out to be. Acting as Mama Africa’s album opener, it does its job very well, bringing high energy to the proceedings while staying true to the man upstairs. Africans love their God and any mother knows to raise her kids on the God first maxim. Perhaps this mama should get more credit than we have given her so far.

Mothers evoke memories of warm embraces, welcoming smiles, accessible kitchens and excellent food. Yemi Alade has always had a food fetish and she brings this habit to the next song, Tumbum. Selebobo is on the beat again, manufacturing another utterly danceable confection of drums while Alade opens with a lamentation directed at an undependable lover who likes Nkechi’s Jollof but prefers Alade’s delicious beans. This feckless fellow, also in the habit of mixing Nkechi’s fufu with Alade’s soup has come to the end of the road as Alade uses the childhood game, Tumbum as metaphor to demand her man makes a choice once and for all.

If traces of Johnny come up again here, then it is because at its core, Tumbum is a play for another massive radio hit. It works though, certainly better than the forgettable Dorcas which turns Johnny over on its head and casts the female this time as the object of her vituperations. Lazy stuff is done here.

Alade is playing for a sizable, more salt of the earth audience and so her record does not seek the approval of modern day feminists. She is unabashedly materialistic on Ferrari, a song that depending on how seriously one takes it, sets the whole feminism movement steps back. Powered by serial hitmaker, DJ Coublon,- he of the high strung guitars and intoxicating brew of rock and highlife,- Ferrari’s lyrics are laughably unoriginal. Alade sings, Oga I don tire to stay Mainland/ E no go bad if you buy me mansion for Banana Island/ Open supermarket for me for Netherlands. Her message is suspect, a full on endorsement of transactional sex, but goodluck resisting the feel good finish of the entire production.

Coming a ways from her King of Queens debut, Mama Africa shows marked improvement in the Yemi Alade artistry. Her influences are more diverse, the songs better produced, the guest stars are richer (P-Square, Sauti Sol, Flavour) and there is more coherence and thought put into the presentation.

Of course, this does not always translate into superior material. Except on a few occasions where she wears her influences on her sleeves; among them; Kelele which channels King Sunny Ade, and Komkom which takes its obvious origins from Onyeka Onwenu’s Iyogogo, the sound of Mama Africa is essentially one big dance party.

The title is only a ruse to thread her influences and copy catting into a cohesive effort. But at the end of the day Mama Africa is as Nigerian pop as they come,  only presented by an artiste with increasing foreign tastes. Azonto, Swahili, Coupe-decale, Juju, Fuji, Miss Alade tries them all and succeeds to an extent.

She deserves credit for effort.

Bruno Genesio : “Barcelona Interest In Alexandre Lacazette Is Flattering”

Featured Image

Lyon coach Bruno Genesio admits Barcelona’s interest in France striker Alexandre Lacazette is ‘flattering’.

Alexandre Lacazette, 24, is one of the most sought-after forwards on the Continent. He has scored 45 league goals for Lyon since the start of last season. Tottenham and West Ham are among his Premier League-based suitors, while Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are reportedly interested in securing his services too.

Lyon boss Genesio believes Alexandre Lacazette could thrive elsewhere, but says there is a long way to go before the forward is transferred away from his club.

“The big clubs are always interested in our players. That means that they are good and that they are having a good season. He (Lacazette) could adapt to many clubs and it is flattering that Barcelona are interested in him,” he is quoted as saying in AS. “For me, the best option is still Lyon. The players are responsible for the choices that they make in their career, but right now he has a contract with us. For that (a transfer away) all parties would have to be in agreement, and we are still very, very far from this.”

Roberto Martinez : “Everton Board Must Consider His Position”

Featured Image

Roberto Martinez says the Everton board is right to consider his future as manager in the wake of a disappointing season.

Asked about the prospect of a board meeting being called to discuss his future, Martinez said: “I understand it completely. I never felt being Everton manager is a manager to be judged in an average position.

“I encourage huge expectations. As a club, we have to drive for silverware and top four and when you aren’t there the scrutiny needs to be there.

“It shouldn’t be scrutiny of the last three months but instead the last three seasons. It’s a scrutiny of the squad we have put together and scrutiny of h
