Lupita Nyong’o Receives Tony Awards 2016 Nomination For Best Performance By An Actress

Featured Image

Lupita Nyong’o, has received a Tony Awards 2016 Nomination for Best Performance by an actress in a leading role for her broadway play, Eclipsed.

The 33 year-old’s performance in 12 Years A Slave sealed her fate as an amazing actress though there was ongoing debate by critics if Lupita had a firm grasp on her career as an actress.

This Tony nomination will definitely shut them up.

Eclipsed,  tells the story of five women who, during the Liberian civil war in 2003, trapped by a rebel commander. Eclipsed has also been nominated for six Tony Awards.

Eclipsed is a play was written by The Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira who will be playing Afeni Shakur in Tupac’s biopic.

Lupita Nyong’o wrote an essay on Lena Dunham’s Lenny’s Letters, explaining why she choose her role in Eclipsed on Broadway, rather than the big screen of Hollywood.

During my last round of press for the play, a journalist asked me, “Why would such a big star choose to do such a small play?”

Why would such a big star choose to do such a small play? This question felt quite silly. I mean, I’m an actress; why wouldn’t I want to be in an incredible, gorgeous, meaty piece about the complicated choices of women during wartime? But then it went deeper than that. To me it felt like a question about our value system in this culture, the ways we define success for ourselves as well as others.

Perhaps the reporter was placing a larger value on “Hollywood” roles? I turned down a few projects to pursue this one. I knew there was a sense of what was expected of me, but this play felt so important to me that I had to do it, expectations be damned.

I think as women, as women of color, as black women, too often we hear about what we ‘need to do’. How we need to behave, what we need to wear, what’s deemed as too much or not enough, the cultural politics of what society considers appropriate for us and for our lives.

We are confined to being a simple and symbolic peripheral character — one who doesn’t have her own journey or emotional landscape.

Leading nominee for the Tony Awards 2016 is Hamilton which set a record with 16 total nominations including Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, and then some.

The awards themselves will be handed out on June 12 at a ceremony hosted by The Late Late Show’s James Corden.

Corden also won a Tony in 2012, for One Man, Two Guvnors.

Liverpool had lost 1-0 in the first leg in Spain, but a 3-0 win at Anfield was enough to book a match with defending champions, Sevilla.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had his players firing from the get go, and were rewarded as early as the seventh minute when Soriano Llido put the ball into his own net. It took almost an hour for the second goal to come, but it eventually did to striker Danny Sturridge, his 4th goal in his last 5 matches at Anfield.

Adam Lallana put the cherry on top with a 3rd goal, and the Reds will now be gearing up for the final against Sevilla on the 18th of May.

Ivica Olic Brands Guardiola A “Failure” At Bayern Munich

Ivica Olic Brands Guardiola A “Failure” – Former Bayern Munich striker Ivica Olic has branded outgoing manager Pep Guardiola as a failure.

Guardiola will be leaving the club at the end of this season, and has won the German Bundesliga in all three seasons. Guardiola was however unable to win the UEFA Champions League as Bayern Munich manager, losing in 3 consecutive semi finals.

“Guardiola was knocked out of three successive Champions League semis and by Bayern’s high standards that’s a failure,” Olic told Sportske Novosti.

“Maybe people at Bayern will now say he won a haul of domestic trophies, but given the strength of the club’s roster, that’s an accomplishment they should take for granted. Yes, Atletico play destructive football but they knew exactly what they wanted and in this chess game Simeone made all the right moves.

“Guardiola stuck to his philosophy and it failed to land a European title, although he had to deal with the burden of expectation from the start. He came after Heynckes who won it all, hence Guardiola could only emulate his success. But he didn’t and won’t be remembered.”

Benin Kingdom Without Erediauwa – Dele Agekameh

Featured Image

For almost a year, the rumours poured in intermittently, albeit, in hushed tones and coded banters that the uninitiated will hardly decipher. Various allusions were also made to describe the eternal transition of the revered Oba of Benin Kingdom and head of the respected Eweka dynasty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Erediauwa I. But all these speculations remained hollow rumour until the traditional and official announcement of the royal transition of the Oba was made in Benin last Friday.

The views and opinions expressed here are those of Dele Agekameh and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

In July last year when a prominent Southwest monarch joined his ancestors, modernity had a head-on collision with tradition, as the social media came alive with report of the demise of the monarch. His transition was initially vehemently denied by the Traditional Council, but they could not hold on for too long before they buckled in the face of ceaseless media scrutiny. In short, modernity triumphed over tradition, or so it seemed.

Now, in the case of the departed Oba of Benin, though the serial rumours of the imperial monarch’s transition started gaining currency about a year ago, perhaps, for fear of untoward repercussion, nobody, not even the ubiquitous social media, could dare announce the transition until the news was officially broken. In this particular case, the strong and undiluted tradition of Benin Kingdom won.

The possible transition of the revered Benin monarch became manifest during the build-up to the last presidential election when Oba Erediauwa was not on hand to receive one of the presidential candidates who was on a tour of Edo State. Some people made political capital out of the issue until the Benin Royal Palace explained that the Benin Monarch was only “indisposed”. But if the Royal Palace thought that that will lay the matter to rest, they were mistaken. Rather than die, the speculations were soon reinforced by the upsurge of what looks like “traditional rebellion” or “coup” in some restive sections of the Benin Kingdom.

Things came to a boiling point when a certain section of the city was delineated along primordial lines and one Chief Richard Arisco Osemwingie was “coronated” as “His Royal Majesty, Ogiamen of Utantan, Benin Nation. Stung by this calculated affront of the creation of an alternate “Oba of Benin”, on September 9, 2015, the duo of Arisco Osemwingie and his brother, Patrick Osabuohien, were arraigned before a Chief Magistrate court for conspiring to commit an unlawful coronation. The case is still ongoing.

The rumours also became rabid at the same period the Benin Traditional Council became uncomfortable with the growing antics of the Elawure of Usen, who the Benin Palace accused of arrogating to himself certain traditional powers and nomenclature and claiming independence of the Royal Palace in Benin City.

READ ALSO: Oba Of Benin, Omo n’Oba Erediauwa Akpolokpolo I, Passes Away

The internal rumbles on the traditional turf were not helped by the gradual eclipse of the oft visible and ascerbic spokesman of the Benin Royal Palace, Chief Nosakhare Isekhure, the Isekhure of Benin Kingdom, who many came to know as the “conscience” of the royal governance, as he suddenly took a dive in his visibility and commentaries on traditional or state issues. The low level presence of the Isekhure in recent times is seen as a tactical withdrawal action designed to prepare him for the tenure of the incoming Oba of Benin. But speculations are rife that the new Oba may not be well-disposed to Isekhure’s penchant for publicity and hype, some of which had allegedly either embarrassed or implicated the Palace in the past.

The late Oba Erediauwa was a crucial stabilising factor in the relative peace Edo State has been enjoying since he ascended the throne in 1979. It is imperative, therefore, to note that Oba Erediauwa left indelible footprints in the sands of time. He was at the vanguard of the prevailing peace in Edo State through the various mediatory roles he played in resolving some contentious issues that involved some high-profile politicians. One of such was his role in finding amicable solution to the misunderstanding between Chief Tony Anenih and former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu.

Another was ending the face-off between Chief Anenih and former Edo State Governor, Lucky Igbinedion. His wise counsel, advice and direction have also played a major part in the resolution of contentious state issues whether on the political or traditional turf. He was firm, assertive and always straight to the point. In fact, he was one of the strident but powerful voices that did not support the perpetuation of the dark-goggled late General, Sani Abacha’s military dictatorship.

Now that focus and attention have been placed on electing an Edo Governor of Edo South extraction, from the two major political parties, the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, political watchers are wary of a situation where the late monarch’s advice and admonition will be totally absent because of this irreversible transition.

This is more so as it will be the first time since 1979, that an election will be conducted in Edo State without Oba Erediauwa sitting as the Oba of Benin. It is even believed that some highly-visible and politically-connected chiefs in his kitchen cabinet may take advantage of his absence and assert their own relevance in the face of the perceived incoming Oba’s little knowledge of the state’s power matrix and the proximity of the forthcoming governorship election in Edo State.

Another factor that will play a prime role is the alleged political configuration that is being forged by Governor Adams Oshiomhole to anoint a successor who will take over from him on November 12, 2016. The anticipated beneficiary of the alleged faux pas, Godwin Obaseki, is a scion of the Obaseki family of Benin City, whose great-grand father, Agho, was said to have connived with the white colonialists to depose his bosom friend, Oba Ovonranmwen, after the Benin Massacre of 1897. Agho was believed to have some self-interest in taking over the Benin kingship with the assistance of the new colonial masters.

In the run-up to the present hustling towards the September 10, 2016 Edo governorship election, some of the palace chiefs have been allegedly fingered as aiding the election dreams of the governor’s man who is believed to be one that the core Royal Family members will not touch, even with a kilometre-long pole! But observers are of the view that the departed and well-beloved monarch tacitly supported the election and re-election of Oshiomhole and also extended his royal blessings to the governor’s urban renewal programme-especially in the state capital.

Therefore, it is a matter of conjecture for one to specifically project an enduring position of the Royal Palace (especially the Royal Family) with respect to its support or otherwise, for the candidacy of Obaseki, who is a known protégé of Oshiomhole. If invariably the late monarch’s siblings are united against the installation of Godwin Obaseki as the Governor of Edo State, they will be towing a line of action that many pundits would have loved to witness if Oba Erediauwa was still alive.

Born on June 22, 1923 as Solomon Aiseokhuoba Igbinoghodua Akenzua, the late Oba was the 38th Oba of Benin. He attended Government College, Ibadan (1939 to 1945); Yaba College and then proceeded to King’s College, Cambridge, UK, where he studied Law and Administration. In 1957, he joined the Eastern Nigeria Civil Service as a District Officer before moving to the Federal Civil Service where he retired as a Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health in 1973.

He had a stint as the Regional Representative of Gulf Oil before he was appointed as the Bendel State Commissioner for Finance, in 1975. By the time he was crowned the Oba of Benin on March 23, 1979, he was a seasoned administrator, whose experience over the years, eventually contributed immensely to his successful monarchical reign. May his soul rest in peace!

National Assembly Halts Operations For 1 Week Over PDP Congress

Featured Image

The National Assembly will be shut down for one week to enable senators of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) fold attend the party’s congress.

The Senate President Bukola Saraki, today, announced the adjournment of plenary till next Thursday to enable the PDP Senators attend their party congress.

It was gathered that the motion was not argued as the number of senators present during today’s plenary was not up the required number to form a quorum.

Most of the PDP senators had attended their party’s local government congress, which took place yesterday, so their absence compelled the Senate to hurriedly adjourn.

The Senate, thereafter adjourned plenary till Thursday, May 12.

The Senate rules state that a quorum is formed for plenary when one-third (at least 37 senators) of the senators are present.

SERAP Drags Nigerian Govt To ECOWAS Court Over Herdsmen Violence

Featured Image

Following the inability of the government of Nigeria to prevent the violent attacks and killings by the Fulani herdsmen, a civil rights group, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), on Wednesday, May 4, has dragged the Federal Government to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice in Abuja.

The suit is as a result of government’s “failure to prevent, account for and investigate killings, raping, maiming of Nigerians and other residents, and destruction of property across the country by herdsmen, the military and police”.

The suit, with number ECW/CCJ/APP/15/16, was filed by the Solicitor to SERAP, Femi Falana.

The suit reads in part: “The Plaintiff contends that the Defendant is responsible for these human rights violations and abuses by the military, police, herdsmen and other unknown perpetrators which have not been adequately prevented, investigated or prosecuted by the authorities. These responsibilities are heightened when an observable pattern has been overlooked or ignored, such as is the case in this suit”.

“The Plaintiff also contends that the obligation to secure the right to life is not confined to cases where it has been established that the killings were caused by an agent of the State. Nor is it decisive whether those affected or their families have lodged a formal complaint about the killings with the competent investigatory authority.”

“It is contended that the mere knowledge of the killings by the military, police, herdsmen and other unknown perpetrators on the part of the authorities have ipso facto given rise to an obligation under Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights to carry out an effective investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killings and to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice, and to provide reparations to victims.”

“Moreover, the Defendant has a responsibility for those killings, raping maiming and destruction of property where authorities knew or ought to have known of an immediate threat and failed to take measures that might have been expected to avoid those attacks and killings.”

“The Plaintiff further contends that the Defendant has positive obligations to provide a framework of security for the protection of life, and to protect the lives of those individuals at risk from unlawful attacks by the military, police, herdsmen and other unknown perpetrators. The lack of accountability for the attacks by the military, police, herdsmen and other unknown perpetrators across the country has continued to create a culture of impunity which clearly is not compatible with the rule of law in a democratic society.”

“The Plaintiff contends that the Defendant has a positive obligation to take measures to secure the right to life, right to security and dignity of the human person and right to property, and to prevent attacks and killings by the military, police, herdsmen and other unknown perpetrators across Nigeria.”

“Human life has a special value and dignity which requires legal protection. It should be pointed out that those affected in the present case include the most disadvantaged and vulnerable sectors of society.”

“By interpreting the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights so as to impose on the Defendant obligations to prevent, account for and investigate killings, raping, maiming of Nigerians and other residents and destruction of property, whether or not the Defendant is directly or indirectly responsible, the ECOWAS Court of Justice will be demanding from the Nigerian government a commitment to securing these rights and to the reform of the very structure and modus operandi of its legal institutions. In so doing, the ECOWAS Court will help to address the systemic factors contributing to the attacks by the military, police, herdsmen and other unknown perpetrators.”

“A fundamental notion of contemporary human rights law is that victims of violations enjoy an independent right to effective remedies. This idea is itself founded on another longstanding legal principle: ubi ius ibi remedium (there is no right without a remedy).”

SERAP therefore is asking the ECOWAS Court of Justice for the following reliefs:

1. The Nigeria Police High Command has extended the revalidation of permit for vehicles with tinted glasses to July 31, 2016.

This is just as the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase directed all State Commands Commissioners of Police to maintain the enforcement of law on tinted glass permit and firearms licence until the expiration of the deadline.

This is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Kolawole.

The statement quoted the Police chief has warning officers of the Force against extortion and harassment of motorists with tinted glasses, even as he added that the revalidation is free of charge.

The police boss urged members of the public who were yet to revalidate their permit and licence, to take advantage of the extension, and do so online.

“The IGP wishes to reassure the public of the commitment of the force to the provision of round-the-clock security for the teeming citizens of the country,” the statement said.

“Citizens are further enjoined to continue to support and assist the police in its constitutional task of safeguarding the nation.”

Eminem Exalts Afeni Shakur, Calls Her ‘A True Queen’ And Her Son, Tupac, ‘A True Soldier’

The world is grateful to Afeni Shakur Davis who died aged 69, on Monday (May, 2) for the hip-hop legacy of her son, Tupac.

One person overwhelmed with gratitude is Eminem, real name Marshall Mathers III.

In 2015, an undated letter from the rapper which his label, Shady Records, confirmed as written by Eminem himself surfaced after it was shared online.

Eminem calls Afeni Shakur a “True Queen”

Eminem lists Tupac Shakur as his biggest inspiration

Eminem began by apologizing, he wrote:

Dear Afeni, Sorry if it looks a little sloppy. I could have done a lot better if I had the right pencils, instead, I had to draw it in pen.

Plus, I just kind of thought of the idea a little too late. But I have been drawing since I was ten and I thought you might like it.

Thank you for always being so kind to me. You are a true Queen, and I mean that in every sense of the word. I will never forget the opportunities you have given me.

You will always be in my heart, my thoughts, and my prayers. As I have said before, you have no idea how much your son and his music has inspired, not only the “Hip Hop” world, but, speaking for myself, has inspired my whole career.

He was, and still is, the true definition of a “Soldier.” When I was feeling at my worst; (before fame, before Dre) I knew I could put that “2Pac” tape in, and suddenly, things weren’t so bad.

He gave me the courage to stand up and say “F**k the world!” “This is who I am! And if you don’t like it, go f**k yourself!”

Thank you for giving us his spirit, and yours! God Bless you!”

Pellegrini: Real Madrid Were Lucky

Featured Image

Manchester City boss, Manuel Pellegrini believes Real Madrid have luck to thank for making it to the final.

Real Madrid eliminated City 1-0, in the English club’s first semifinal, thanks to a deflected Bale strike.

And while Pellegrini admits the defeat feels like a missed opportunity, he insists Madrid were not the better side over two legs.

“Of course if you don’t reach the final you miss an opportunity,” he said. “We played against a very strong team that wasn’t better than us.

“You need a little bit of luck but that wasn’t the reason we couldn’t win the game. Tonight and the game we played at the Etihad we saw very equal teams. I don’t think Real Madrid demonstrated tonight that they are better than Manchester City.

“We tried to create but we couldn’t. Both teams couldn’t create. It was similar in the first leg. We didn’t deserve to lose this game, the goal was very lucky, a deflection into the top corner.

“Missing David Silva, [Samir] Nasri and Yaya [Toure] coming from an injury, we didn’t have creative players to make a difference.

“There are no regrets, we worked very well for 90 minutes. That’s why Real Madrid couldn’t create any chances. But we needed to create in the final third and today we couldn’t.”

Pellegrini now has just two Premier League games left before he hands over the reins to Pep Guardiola, and the Chilean is keen to finish the campaign on a high.

“It’s a special season because we have reached the semi-final,” he added. “I don’t think that we deserved to reach the final but it was a bit of luck that Real will play in the final.

“Of course it would have been a very important achievement to play that final. It was very important for me to try to reach that final but we did what we could and now we must try to finish well.”

City face Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Falcao Left Out Of Colombia Squad

Featured Image

Chelsea striker Radamel Falcao has been omitted from Colombia’s preliminary 40-man squad by Jose Pekerman.

The on-loan Monaco striker has not featured for his country since their 3-0 loss against Uruguay.

He went on to miss their next two matches due to injury, and was subsequently dropped for the world cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Ecuador.

AC Milan’s Carlos Bacca and Borussia Dortmund’s Adrian Ramos are expected to lead the attack for the tournament in the United States – which starts on June 3 – as Colombia look to add to their 2001 triumph.

Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez, on-loan Juventus winger Juan Cuadrado and Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina are the other names included in the squad, with no other major surprises.

Colombia begin the tournament with a clash against hosts the USA on the opening day, before facing other Group A opponents Paraguay and Costa Rica.

But this didn’t sit well with Lupita who took to Instagram on Wednesday to further school Vogue about her hair inspiration.

#WhoSocialMediaHelp? Comedian AY Shares The Reward And Pain Of Social Media

Featured Image

Ayo Makun better known as AY lends his opinion via an Instagram post where he fully discusses the rewards of social media as well as the disadvantages too.

While some assert he used it to throw shade at the celebrities who got famous, mainly due to the influence of social media, AY’s post speaks deeper into the everyday struggle celebrities go through when they have to check their social media pages.

ay makunRead: How Adorable Are Ayo Makun And Tuface’s Kids In Their Children’s Day Costume

The comedian’s  post features a collage with Davido and PSquare on top and on the bottom was 2face and his humble self both pointing at the above artistes; with a social media observer in the middle.

He begins his post with the caption or rather, the question of “Who Social Media Help?”

AY

The picture he used on Instagram

The social media platform is like a mirror that reflects the image we want people to see. It is also a reflection of the image of what the people decides to see or take.

We don’t have a choice on whether we do social media or not…as long as you are in showbiz, there must be something to show before the business will come. The connection between you, your fans and prospective sponsor who would like to leverage on your brand equity must be kept intact.

The day they don’t hear from you or see you, it is assumed that your career is dead.

No matter what we put out there, good or bad, we will always be living our lives for everyone else on social media. So permit me to welcome my dear colleagues to a world where we’re reminded that we’re all human and all equal, especially when they are not paying to watch you or buy your CDs.

Welcome to the world where we enjoy all the praises and comments on a good post. But permit me to also welcome you to all to a veritable battleground where the fearless and ANONYMOUS cyber kings and queens throws their verbal bullets to damage lives, self-esteem and self- worth.

As for me, I will continue to enjoy the positive side of social media, and learn from the negative (even when it sometimes hurts me as a human being ).

What do you think of AY’s post? Share your thoughts.
