SERAP Drags Nigerian Govt To ECOWAS Court Over Herdsmen Violence

Following the inability of the government of Nigeria to prevent the violent attacks and killings by the Fulani herdsmen, a civil rights group, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), on Wednesday, May 4, has dragged the Federal Government to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice in Abuja.

The suit is as a result of government’s “failure to prevent, account for and investigate killings, raping, maiming of Nigerians and other residents, and destruction of property across the country by herdsmen, the military and police”.

The suit, with number ECW/CCJ/APP/15/16, was filed by the Solicitor to SERAP, Femi Falana.

The suit reads in part: “The Plaintiff contends that the Defendant is responsible for these human rights violations and abuses by the military, police, herdsmen and other unknown perpetrators which have not been adequately prevented, investigated or prosecuted by the authorities. These responsibilities are heightened when an observable pattern has been overlooked or ignored, such as is the case in this suit”.

I Want To Return To Sambisa To Meet My Husband – Rescued 9-year-old Boko Haram Victim Cries Out

Featured Image

In a shocking development, a nine-year-old girl, who was reportedly among the 65 young girls rescued by the troops of the Nigerian Army from the enclaves of terror group, Boko Haram in Sambisa Forest, has cried out, saying she wants to go back to the forest to unite with her husband.

This is just as 12 other rescued girls have been discovered to be pregnant while others have already given birth.

The Boko Haram female victim – name withheld – expressed her grievance by refusing to eat for the past three days as she insisted that she wanted to go back and reunite with her Boko Haram husband in Sambisa Forest.

This disclosure was brought to light on Friday when Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno state visited the headquarters of the 7 Division, Nigerian Army, Maimalari Cantonment to officially receive the Boko Haram hostages by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major General Victor Ezegwu.

The GOC disclosed that most of the rescued hostages comprising 27 children and over 30 young girls with few women including two Cameroonians have been indoctrinated by the sect as many of them claimed they have been with the sect for the past three years, and were willing to go back to Sambisa to meet their husbands.

Budget 2016: Flagging-Off Our Journey On The Difficult Path To Self-Sustenance – Muhammadu Buhari

Featured Image

It gives me great pleasure today to sign the first full-year budget of this administration into law. I thank the leadership of the National Assembly, in particular, the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and indeed all members of the National Assembly for their cooperation in making this a reality.

This are the remarks of President Muhammadu Buhari in signing the 2016 Appropriation Bill into law on Friday, May 6, 2016, in Abuja.

The budget is intended to signpost a renewal of our commitment to restoring the budget as a serious article of faith with the Nigerian people. This Administration is committed to ensuring that henceforth the annual appropriation bill is presented to the National Assembly in time for the passage of the Act before the beginning of the fiscal year.

Through the 2016 budget, aptly titled “Budget of Change”, the government seeks to fulfill its own side of the social contract. The Budget I have signed into law provides for aggregate expenditures of N6.06trn. Further details of the approved budget, as well as our Strategic Implementation Plan for the 2016 budget, will be provided by the Honourable Minister of Budget and National Planning.

I shall be speaking in more details about the budget, its implementation and the overall national economic and social policies of the government in my address on May 29th, God willing.

In designing the 2016 budget, we made a deliberate choice to pursue an expansionary fiscal policy despite the huge decline in government revenues from crude oil exports. This is why we decided to enlarge the budget deficit at this time, to be financed principally through foreign and domestic borrowings. All borrowings will however be applied towards growth-enhancing capital expenditures.

The signing of the budget today will trigger concerted efforts to reflate the Nigerian economy, a key element of which is an immediate injection of N350bn into the economy by way of capital projects. To illustrate our renewed commitment to infrastructural development, the 2016 budget allocates over N200bn to road construction as against a paltry N18bn allocated for same purpose in the 2015 budget.

Despite the current difficulties, we will work extra-hard to achieve our revenue projections. Our revenue generating agencies are coming under better management and are being re-oriented. The implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) is expected to contribute significantly to improving transparency over government revenues.

Our determined fight against corruption is resulting in improvements in the quality of public expenditure. The work of the Efficiency Unit, as well as other public financial management initiatives, are also contributing in this regard. The continuing efforts to reduce recurrent expenditures should hopefully free up more funds for capital expenditure in 2017 and beyond.

As I said in my New Year message, living in State House does not in any way alienate me from your daily struggles. I read the newspapers and listen to the TV and radio news. I hear your cries. I share your pains.

We are experiencing probably the toughest economic times in the history of our nation. I want to commend the sacrifice, resilience and toughness of all Nigerians young and old who have despite the hardships continued to have hope and confidence of a great future for Nigerians. But permit me to say that this government is also like none other. We are absolutely committed to changing the structure of the Nigerian economy once and for all.

We are working night and day to diversify the economy so that we never again have to rely on one commodity to survive as a country. So that we can produce the food we eat, make our own textiles, produce most of the things we use. We intend to create the environment for our young peoples to be able to innovate and create jobs through technology.

I cannot promise you that this will be an easy journey, but in the interest of so much and so many we must tread this difficult path. I can assure you that this government you have freely elected will work with honesty and dedication, day and night to ensure that our country prospers and that the prosperity benefits all Nigerians. God bless Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) is president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

John Terry To Miss Last Two Games

Featured Image

John Terry is set to miss Chelsea’s last two matches due to suspension, after being sent off in the 3-2 loss against Sunderland.

The veteran defender was sent off for a foul on Wahbi Khazri, and with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, the captain will miss the final clash against Leicester.

Usually, Terry’s second yellow card would result in a one-game ban but the suspension has been doubled as he was sent off against West Brom last August.

Terry as not yet revealed his future, although reports have claimed that incoming Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is keen to keep the centre-back at Stamford Bridge for another year.

Simeone: UCL Will Not Distract Liga Title Bid

Featured Image

Diego Simeone wants Atletico Madrid to focus on beating Barcelona to the La Liga title.

Atletico Madrid made it to the final by beating Bayern on away goals, but Simeone is thinking only about Levante.

And with just two matches left and both clubs on level points, with Barcelona leading head to head, Atletico can snatch the trophy from the Catalan giants.

And Simeone hopes his side can frustrate their Catalan rivals once again having already knocked them out of Europe.

“Right now I’m focused on Levante, there will be 15 days to talk about it [the final in Milan],” he said.

“We have a challenge and a new opportunity to try and do well. Our enthusiasm and excitement for reaching the last round with options are untouched.

“It is not important to look at other sides, we must depend on ourselves to get the most points and then wait and see what the rest do.

“What does depend on us is our intensity, concentration and personality to get the result we want.”

The Sad Story Of Ronke Bewaji Shonde – A woman named Ronke Bewaji Shonde was allegedly beaten to death by her husband, Lekan Shonde.

Ronke lived with her husband and 2 kids at Tiemo Crescent off Awori street in Egbeda, Lagos state, and that was where she was beaten to death by Lekan. Reports say that the couple had fought on the morning of May 6th, with noises being heard from their apartment.

Alerting the neighbors, the door to the apartment was forced open, and Ronke’s lifeless body was found, with Lekan no where to be seen.

Ronke’s body has since been taken to the mortuary, while the hunt for Kunle continues. Domestic violence is an evil that must be stopped. See photos of the couple and their kids below.

Pellegrini Wants EPL Stay

Featured Image

Manchester City manager, Manuel Pellegrini has reiterated his desire to stay in the EPL.

The Chilean manager will vacate his post at the end of the season, with Pep Guardiola taking over.

And even though Pellegrini has been linked with Milan, he would love to remain in a league he has branded the best.

“I will look at my options when the season is finished. I just want to finish this season in the best way possible for now. I don’t know what will happen, but I would be happy to stay in the Premier League,” Pellegrini said at a news conference ahead of Sunday’s clash against third-placed Arsenal.

“For me this is the best league in the world, for a lot of reasons. It’s very competitive because you have a lot of teams with the same potential as the other teams. All the teams have the money to bring in good players, so all the 20 teams have a lot of good players.

“Maybe it’s not the best football because once again Spain has demonstrated it has three of four teams playing in both finals in Europe. But it’s the best league so to continue in the Premier League would be a really important option if I have a project that I think we can be a competitive team.”

City face Arsenal on Sunday in a potentially pivotal match in the race for the top four.

See Asa and Die: Review of Asa Live in Lagos Concert

Featured Image

Nine years.

That’s how long Asa made Lagos- and Nigeria,- the land of her birth, wait for a major headlining concert befitting her status as Nigeria’s premiere vocalist and performer.

From her Paris base, Nigeria’s biggest music export not named Kuti touches down once in a while to promote whatever studio album she is selling at the moment. There have been three of them, so far. Three magnificent discs that have kept her songs on the lips of Nigerians and her artistic bonafides untouchable among music lovers.

Sure, she’s been known to perform a couple of songs at events like The Future Awards Africa and the Etisalat Prize for Literature ceremony, as well as other private gigs that can afford her services, but for the bulk of her professional life, Asa is on the road, touring the globe, performing, and making new music.

Two hours, twenty minutes.

That’s how long Asa made Lagos wait to see her live. The consensus among the organisers seemed to be, ‘’If you can wait 9 years, surely two more hours should go by in a breeze.’’ Not exactly so, especially for folks who came to the Eko Hotel & Suites venue expecting world class standards in everything from planning to execution. To make up, opening acts Bez Idakula, Kaline, Isaac Geralds and Rachel Kerr were invited to open for her. All fantastic artistes and performers in their own right, but the intermissions went on for way too long with too much dead space in between.

The event, announced as the Lagos leg of her Bed of stone tour was to be recorded live for a DVD event and so after waiting forever it seemed, for those Lagos big boys and girls, the ones who never come early for anything, to fill up the front seats, lucky folks were upgraded to VVIP status and soon it was showtime.

All was forgotten (and forgiven) the moment Asa was ushered on stage. The sheer energy and star wattage she brought with her was enough to send the audience into volunteering a standing ovation before she even opened her mouth.

Dressed in one of those funky, wing tipped Iconic Invanity outfits she likes to wear, complete with high heels that she was soon to lose in moments, Asa opened with Awe, a spiritual mellow evocation, off her debut album. The impatient Lagos audience, for once was not about to sit in their seats and act all stuck up. No, these ones sang along and worshipped with her word for word, note for note.

The mesmeric trance of Satan be gone followed shortly and anybody with common sense knows the devil is not exorcised while sitting disinterested on concert seats. For the next two hours, Asa zipped through her impressive discography, starting with material from her latest album Bed of stone, before reaching far back to audience favourites like Bibanke, Jailer and Fire on the mountain. The crowd at this point was ecstatic.

Asa started tentatively at first as she studied her audience, each minute that went by had her easing into her flow even as she soaked up the pure joy and love she was getting. Asa grew more comfortable and more daring; singing, dancing, emoting, and performing like the crowd had every reason to expect.

The sound, put together by Reveal sounds and acoustics was explosive, perhaps too explosive as Asa’s vocals were occasionally drowned by her 5 man band- including backup singer/manager, Janet Nwose. Asa played both guitar and trumpet and sang the hell out of an enveloping performance of Bamidele. You know you have entered rarefied territory as a Nigerian artiste when your entire discography is instantly recognisable by your audience and for Asa, every single song was a hit, back to back, as her audience gave as good as they got.

Some of the songs got a new lease, like the fiery rock splash of Preacher man, the dramatic soul of Society and the traditional grove of So Beautiful . Plus surely you haven’t lived yet until you have joined an auditorium full of people to sing along heartily to the timeless state of the nation address that is Fire on the mountain.

She called on regular contributor Cobhams Asuquo to join her for an understated cover of  Beyonce’s Halo as well as a duet of her 360 from her debut album.

Asa’s voice came through clear but the best thing about her set was her band; the chemistry, the cohesion, the electric guitar dude and the impeccable control Asa exerted over everything and everyone.

She did not give everything, no, there was always something of her that was held back but the audience took in as much as she was willing to give and gave her everything in return.

2 hours.

That’s how long Asa took to establish her artistry as an experience, one to be seen and branded as a lifetime event. The French may have their Paris and the rest of the world may own Asa for most of the year, but for one night, she came home to Lagos, where she will always belong.

Forget Paris, see Asa live in concert, and die.

We Love Omoni Oboli In Ayo Van Elmar’s S/S 2016 Fishbone Editorial Shoot Titled “Table De Billiard”(Photos)

Featured Image

We are loving actress Omoni Oboli as Ayo Van Elmar’s muse in this editorial shoot showcasing the designer’s current collection, Fishbone.

The game of nobles, dating as far back as the 15th century is the creative director’s plot for the editorial shoot of her Spring Summer 2016 collection, Fishbone. Ayo Elizabeth Olaogun was inspired to create the set “table de billiard” around her muse Omoni Oboli and her latest hit movie, Wives on strike, with a tremendous and continuous success of sixty million naira since its release about a month ago.

Wives on strike like a billiard table, is cushioned with comedy, but also stuffed with substance to allow the balls of thoughts about the girl child rebound.

The shoot depicts strength in the beginning and victory at last. May triumph prevail eventually and may the girl child in our nation and everywhere on planet earth, be forever playing the winning game of freedom, may she grow to express her rights to life and development, and above all, her rights to equality before the law.

Omoni looks amazing in each look, her natural hair styled in different ways – especially loving her red lips in one of the looks.
