200,000 Additional Jobs Will Be Created From Fuel Subsidy Removal, Says FG

Featured Image

The government of Nigeria has announced that the introduction of a new price regime for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) has become inevitable in order to halt the crippling fuel scarcity in the country and ensure availability of the product.

This is even as the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said that the development is aimed at tackling the hardship faced by Nigerians, as it would lead to the creation of additional 200,000 jobs in the country.

READ ALSO: Kachikwu Promises Reduction In Fuel Price

Speaking at the inauguration of the Advertisers Association of Nigeria (ADVAN) Marketers Conference in Lagos on Friday, the minister said only the liberalization of petrol supply will ensure the availability of the products.

His words: “Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, I can tell you that the decision is inevitable, if we are to end the crippling fuel scarcity that has enveloped the country, ensure the availability of the products and end the suffering that our people have been subjected to.”

He said the crash in the price of crude oil, which has impacted negatively on foreign exchange earnings, has further compounded the crisis in fuel supply.

“With the drastic fall in the price of crude oil, which is the nation’s main foreign exchange earner, there has also been a drastic reduction in the amount of foreign exchange available. The unavailability of forex and the inability to open letters of credit have forced marketers to stop product importation and imposed over 90% supply on the NNPC since October 2015, in contrast to the past where NNPC supplies 48% of the national requirement,” the Minister said.

He explained that the new fuel price regime should not be misconstrued as the removal of subsidy since there is no provision for subsidy in the 2016 Appropriation, saying the erstwhile PMS price of N86.50 gives an estimate subsidy claim of N13.7per litre which translates to N16.4 billion monthly.

“There is neither funding nor appropriation to cover this,” he said.

While listing the benefits of the new price regime, Alhaji Mohammed said it would end the recurrent fuel scarcity by ensuring product availability across the country, reduce hoarding, smuggling and diversion of products substantially, improves fuel supply situation through private sector participation, creates labour market stability, as this will potentially create additional 200,000 jobs through new investments in refineries and retails and prevents potential loss of 400,000 jobs in existing investments”.

Abbiati Set To Retire

Featured Image

Christian Abbiati is set to retire at the end of the season, making a final appearance against Roma on Saturday.

Abbiati joined the San Siro outfit in 1998, winning three Serie A titles and the UCL.

The shot stopper was a Milan regular until the last two seasons when the signing of Diego Lopez from Real Madrid – and emergence of Gianluigi Donnarumma moved him down the pecking order.

He only made four appearances for Italy – all in friendlies – with his last appearance coming in 2005.

“Abbiati says goodbye to football after 15 years at the club,” Milan posted on Twitter. “Tomorrow [Saturday] come to the San Siro to give him a special send-off!”

Abbiati has only played six times this season – five of those appearances coming in the Coppa Italia – but will be given the chance to play and say goodbye to supporters by interim boss Cristian Brocchi, with Donnarumma kept fresh for the Coppa Italia final against Juventus on May 21.

Blanc: Ibrahimovic Influenced PSG

Featured Image

Laurent Blanc has expressed how sad he is to see Ibrahimovic go, praising the attacker for influencing PSG.

Ibrahimovic, 34, made an official announcement of his desire to leave the club at the end of the season.

The Sweden international has scored 36 goals so far this season and has won four ligue 1 titles, three coupe De La ligue and will look to make it two Coupe De France, when they play Marseille on the 21st of May.

And Blanc says the impact Ibra has had on the club is huge and says the club held talks with him over a new deal.

“Zlatan has greatly moved the club,” Blanc told a media conference ahead of Ibrahimovic’s final game at Parc des Princes against Nantes this weekend.

“Now, we have to think about the future.

“There have been talks. Personally I am sad because we lost our best player, but sad in the sense that this time had to come.

“At the same time I’m hopeful – for him first. And I think the club have to start on something else.”

Ibrahimovic is battling a calf injury but – while Blanc has advised him not to play against Nantes – the PSG boss expects the former Barcelona striker to feature and try to break Carlos Bianchi’s French top-flight record of 37 goals set in 1977-78.

“I hope he can participate in this game,” Blanc said.

“I advised him not to do anything. There is an important match against Marseille in the final of the Coupe de France, and the Euros with his national team.

“But I think he will not listen to me and he will want to play the game at all costs. He’ll want to beat the record of Bianchi. It makes sense.”

FIFA appoint Fatma Samoura as Secretary General: President Gianni Infantino

Samoura is the first ever woman to hold the post, and was announced by FIFA president Gianni Infantino at the 66th FIFA Congress in Mexico City. Samoura will have to undergo an eligibility check first before she can start in the postion previously held by the banned Jerome Valcke.

READ: FIFA Ban Benin Republic From Football

A statement read: “Ms. Samoura is a 21-year veteran of United Nations programmes who is currently the UN’s Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria.

“Since starting her UN career as a senior logistics officer with the World Food Programme in Rome in 1995, Ms. Samoura has served as country representative or director in six countries: Republic of Djibouti, Cameroon, Chad, Guinea, Madagascar and Nigeria. She speaks French (her mother tongue), English, Spanish and Italian.

“In her current UN role in Nigeria, Ms. Samoura has wide-ranging responsibilities including budgeting, human resources, and procurement, among others. She coordinates the activities of approximately 2,000 staff members, and monitors and evaluates the security, political and socio-economic situation and trends in Africa’s most populous country.”

Infantino said: “Fatma is a woman with international experience and vision who has worked on some of the most challenging issues of our time. She has a proven ability to build and lead teams, and improve the way organisations perform. Importantly for FIFA, she also understands that transparency and accountability are at the heart of any well-run and responsible organisation.

“It is essential for FIFA to incorporate fresh perspectives — from outside the traditional pool of football executives — as we continue to restore and rebuild our organisation. No one exemplifies what we need more than Fatma does, and we are thrilled that she has joined our team.”

Ms. Samoura added: “Today is a wonderful day for me, and I am honored to take on the role of FIFA’s Secretary General. I believe this role is a perfect fit for my skills and experience — strategic, high impact team building in international settings — which I will use to help grow the game of football all over the world. I also look forward to bringing my experience in governance and compliance to bear on the important reform work that is already underway at FIFA.

“FIFA is taking a fresh approach to its work — and I am eager to play a role in making that approach as effective and lasting as possible.”

At least 29 Taliban Militants have been slaughtered with over 40 wounded during military operations conducted by Afghan security forces in 17 of the country’s 34 provinces within last 24 hours, the Afghan Defense Ministry said on Friday in Kabul.

This is just as the ministry confirmed in a statement that five suspected militants were detained in the raids.

“The Afghan army launched the raids in close coordination with police and personnel of national intelligence agency. The joint forces also seized weapons and ammunition besides defusing several landmines planted recently by the militants,” the statement said.

The New Fuel Pricing: A Much Better Deal for Nigerians – Bola Tinubu

Featured Image

The president’s decision to reallocate funds once earmarked for the fuel subsidy and commit these to other more socially productive services and undertakings was a difficult decision. It was also a necessary one. Politically, it would have been easy for the president to sit back and let the subsidy remain in place, yet in the art of governance, the easiest policy is rarely the best one.

As originally envisioned, subsidy formed a basic part of the social contract between the people and government. It was a benefit all were to enjoy. Yet, because past governments were not for and of the people, the true meaning and objective of the subsidy policy became lost. Over the years, the operation of the measure was distorted to where it no longer functioned for the benefit of the masses but for the undue enrichment of a small club of businessmen, some legitimate in their work, some not.

Instead of remaining a positive aspect of the social contract, subsidy was transformed into an opaque haven of intrigue and malfeasance. It was turned into a shadowy process from which the unscrupulous extracted large sums of money without providing the services and products duly paid for. Fake businessmen became true billionaires over night as if by supernatural force. They paraded themselves as such. Meanwhile, the rest of the nation, the innocent people, where left to face erratic supply and were made to groan in the misery of long fuel queues and the high costs and loss of time attendant to this situation.

To allow this unfairness to continue would have been a breach of the promise made by this government to the people. While we all have an emotional and sympathetic attachment to the ideals upon which subsidy was founded, we all must recognise that the institution was hijacked years ago. Instead of a bonus to the masses, it became a factory of corrupt enrichment, so imbued with trickery deceit and theft, it stopped serving the interests of the people. It became a weapon of profiteering. The machinery of the subsidy had become so polluted that it was no longer feasible to talk about reforming it. Either it had to cease or we would have to surrender to the corruption now inherent in it.

This administration entered office with a mandate of CHANGE. The government could not forever sit back and allow this dire inequity to continue, less it forfeit the essence of its mandate.

We all want fuel at a cheaper price. Under subsidy, we got the right price but not the fuel. Meanwhile, some were getting rich on the common man’s predicament. They were laughing to the bank while the rest of Nigeria waited on the petrol line. This is not the way to democratic development. It is a recipe for creating a class of economic predators that would feed off the people and in time gain such power and wealth that they would seek to buy and control, if not own, government as well.

President Buhari has with this decision put an abrupt and just end to the assault against our economy and political system. He has made a courageous and prudent decision. It is time to end fuel subsidy and begin to subsidise the true needs of the people.

To Mr. President, I say congratulations for having the courage to remove subsidy. The president has taken this tough decision in the interest of the present and future generations of Nigerians.

For some time, I have been a proponent of this action. I believed the ending of subsidy was the only sure way to put to sleep the myriad demons that had invaded the subsidy process, sucking the blood of Nigeria, swallowing much of our needed money.

The rentiers will no longer be able to make free money at our common expense. They will no longer be laughing to the bank while you languish on endless fuel queues. Nigeria has taken the historic step needed to create a competitive environment that that will eliminate smuggling, provide incentives for private refineries and attract foreign investments in the downstream sector and create employment.

Instead of just shipping off oil and having the more expensive finished products sent back to us, Nigeria will move closer to realising its potential to become the plastic centre of the continent by manufacturing numerous by products. Nothing can stop Nigeria from being the net exporter of fertiliser from the bye products of the oil industry.

I am hopeful but also realistic about this measure. I am also mindful of the situation of our people. This change will mean higher fuel costs in generally, and I would be lying if I said this will cause no pain or dislocation. However, it will lead to better supply and end the hidden substantial costs associated with long waits and delays for fuel. The days and hours of waiting for fuel will be a thing of the past.

In a perfect setting, I wish we could have sanitised the subsidy regime and thus continued with it. However, I believe that president Buhari correctly understood that there are to many malefactors and flaws in system for that hell to be turned into heaven. Better that we remove it. But I believe he is removing it not for the austere purpose of saving money but for the nobler purpose of putting those same funds to fairer, more equitable use in order that government might better serve those of us who are truly in utmost need.

Now that the subsidy is being phased-out, we should simultaneously phase in social programmes benefiting the poorest and most vulnerable among us. Programmes such as transportation grants, school feeding, improved basic medical care and coverage for the poor, and potable water projects are profound social objectives that can be funded with the money that was once going to rentiers and speculators. This way we can use government funds to ensure that fruits go to the hungry, not the already well fed.

Thus, I ask everyone to take a step back to coolly and objectively assess what has been decided. We must not make the mistake of allowing our political and sympathetic attachment to subsidy blind us to the hard fact that the purpose and benefits of subsidy had long ago been taken from the common man to reside in the purse of an elite few. We cannot persist in this imbalance and think it will help us to develop.

Instead, it is better to end subsidy and use the funds to establish well-targeted anti-poverty programmes that actually assist the people in need. True, this measure will increase fuel cost in the immediate term, and government must be vigilant to ensure that market forces are allowed to work properly and bring about a fair balance between supply, demand and longer-term favourable pricing. Collusion and manipulation of the market must never be allowed.

If government sets the system fairly, it will ensure better supply and with it economic certainty. Over the longer term, it will boost investment that can spur employment across several sectors. Perhaps more importantly, it will liberate money that government can now use to lower the social costs of living for our brothers and sisters who really need the help.

While this may not be perfect, it is a much better deal than the one the subsidy offered us.

The movie which stars Omoni Oboli, sold fifteen-million naira in three days in its first weekend at the cinema, making it the first ever Nollywood movie to do so in the history of box-office records in Nigeria.

Omoni Oboli also produced other great movies such as Being Mrs Elliot and The First Lady. Both movies also made best box office movies of 2014 and 2015 respectively.

The plot is a hilarious comedy about a group of market women who decided to take matters into their own hands against their husbands in a bid to stir them into standing up for a young girl whom they wanted to protect from the wishes of her own father.

Segun Odejimi of TNS reviewed the movie, “Wives on Strike has been in the cinema for how long now? 19 days? However, it was still a FULL house at the 3pm screening I opted for. Many people could not find a seat at twenty minutes past 3.

The hall erupted in unified laughter almost every five minutes. As the credits rolled at the end of the screening, there was a standing ovation. The audience enjoyed it and not less than half of them will share the testimony with others.”

Moses Babatope, COO of FilmOne said in a statement, “Wives on Strike has surprised everyone. We expected a decent run at the cinemas but no one expected this record breaking standard the movie is setting at the box-office.

The records of the movie have truly amazed everyone. And to say it is beating The Huntsman despite being in cinema for three week is so amazing. Omoni is truly Nollywood personality of the year and definitely casting her name is gold”.

Omoni Oboli said she is filled with gratitude for the record her movie has set, “I am full of gratitude. People have shown me so much love. The record is humbling. I am grateful”.

Imasuen opined that the partnership is a plus for Nollywood; adding that it has further reinforced the fact that the industry is making an immense progress through its unrelenting hard work.

Blessing Egbe, a foremost film producer and director also applauded Filmone, saying they have handled their theatrical distributions well; exhibiting a high level of integrity and transparency, which is the reason why an international body would want to partner with them.

She also believed the new development would create more opportunities for the industry.

Fox’s Executive Vice President International Distribution (EMEA), Paul Higginson, also spoke on integrity in the new partnership.

Higginson said:

“We are delighted to be working with Kene, Moses and the entire FilmOne team on expanding our reach in Africa particularly in the increasingly important market of Nigeria.

Twentieth Century Fox has always sought out new opportunities and the best distribution partners in each territory with in-depth local knowledge, and we feel that we’ve found the perfect partner in FilmOne.

We look forward to working with FilmOne closely to get the best results from all our titles.”

Chief Operations Officer and EVP of FilmOne Distribution, Moses Babatope expressed delight to be ‘partnering with such a dynamic and successful Hollywood Studio who have already started 2016 on a remarkable note with box office hits like the academy award-winning ‘The Revenant’, animation franchise ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ and recent comic book phenomenon ‘Deadpool’.’

Babatope said he and his team were looking ‘forward to releasing franchise titles like ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’, ‘Ice Age: Collision Course’’ as well as other potential franchise productions such as ‘‘Assassin’s Creed’ alongside films from Fox Searchlight and DreamWorks Animation’.

FilmOne will commence this deal with the release of ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ in West Africa on July 1st, 2016.

Chelsea Offer Terry One-Year Deal

Featured Image

Chelsea have announced they have offered captain John Terry, a one-year contract extension, though an agreement is yet to be reached.

John Terry was set for an exit from the club he has spent 21 years with, due to the absence of a contract extension.

And interim coach Hiddink, who said this week that Terry is good enough to remain at the club, says he believes the decision to offer him a new deal is the right one.

“Ex-players are having a lot of say in the culture of a club,” the Dutchman said. “They like to come back in whatever task they can do – I am in favour of that.

“It is nice to have players who are big personalities. When things are clear, you will see.

“To spend 20 or 21 years at a club is huge. This is how they become legends, you must cherish them.”

The 35-year-old was sent off for the second time this season in Saturday’s defeat to Sunderland, meaning he would miss out on saying farewell to Chelsea fans with a two-game suspension.

And while the defender has not yet signed extended terms, he is expected to commit to a further year at least, having admitted on Monday that he would like to spend a few more years at Stamford Bridge.

Crisis Brews In PDP As Jerry Gana, Others ‘Fire’ Party Chairman | Sheriff Reacts

Featured Image

There is indication of crisis and internal dissent among the hegemony of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after a former Minister of Information and a founding member of the party, Jerry Gana, led a group of other leading members to announce the takeover of the party from its national chairman, Ali Sheriff.

A group chaired by Gana, “Concerned Stakeholders”, converged on Thursday at the Nicon Luxury Hotel in Abuja, and after the meeting a statement was released with respect to the decision of the party’s National Executive Committee, NEC, to extend the tenure of Mr. Sheriff to May 21, 2016.

The meeting had a former Deputy President of the Senate, Ibrahim Mantu, a former Minister of Education, Tunde Adeniran, and media mogul, Raymond Dokpesi as attendees.

The group said as far they were concerned, the tenure of the National Working Committee, NWC, expired on March 24, 2016, adding that a national convention should have been held to either elect a new NWC or approve the composition of a caretaker committee.

The statement read: “The purported extension of the tenure of the Chairman and other members of the national working committee by the Party by the NEC was an illegality and therefore untenable and contrary to the provisions of our party Constitution which gives such powers ONLY to the National Convention of the Party.”

“All actions purportedly taken by the said NEC and the National Working Committee, including the Ward, Local Government, State Congresses and the planned National Convention of the Party slated for the 21st of May 2016 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State constitute a nullity and are of no effect”.

Premium Times gathered that they equally said the zoning arrangement as announced by the chairman of the “purported” Zoning Committee, the governor of Akwa-Ibom State, Emmanuel Udom was unacceptable, because it ran contrary to the PDP’s “established principles and practice”, which, they said, had sustained the party in continuous unity for the last 18 years.

“Deriving from all the above and in order to stop further slide into unconstitutional confusion and widespread disenchantment of party members nationwide, We the founding fathers, stakeholders and leaders of the party from all the 6 Geopolitical zones hereby announce a 21 member steering committee to manage the affairs of the PDP, and work intimately with our respected members of BOT who are the conscience of the party till such a time that a proper, lawfully organized National Convention of the party, where a new authentic leadership of the party will be duly elected in accordance to the provisions of our party constitution and guidelines.”

The Jerry Gana group also called on governors elected on the platform of PDP, as well as senators, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly members to “take up the gauntlet and support this noble cause”.

“We need to come together as a family, to fight the cancer of impunity that has eaten deep into the tissues of our party,” they said.

Meanwhile, Sheriff, who wasn’t too pleased with the untoward behaviour of Gana, told pressmen that the Jerry Gana group were just out “to cause mischief”.

Speaking via his spokesperson, Inuwa Bwala, at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, he said that they were coming up with different gimmicks to divert attention from the effects of what they did in the past leading to the squandering of the fortunes of the party.

“Unfortunately, among such groups are self-styled elders and stakeholders led by Professor Jerry Gana. I have seen him sweating on television, playing with language but at the end of the day saying nothing.

“I want to specifically say we kept sealed lips about some of the activities of this man believing that we could still find a rendezvous at which we could work together for the progress of the PDP. I must say, and there are witnesses that this is one character that attempts to play a role in every government since the time of the military,” Mr. Bwala said.

Mr. Bwala said the group formed by Mr. Gana is not known to the constitution of the PDP. He also accused Mr. Gana and his group of having “personal grudges” with Mr. Sheriff.

His words: “We know the very ignoble roles that he played that led to the PDP being defeated in the last election. These were the same characters that deceived President Jonathan into failure. Unfortunately most of them still go round to ask the chairman of one favour or the other and when the chairman declines they take offence against him.

“I know as a fact that Senator Jery Gana has written to the national chairman to allow him nominate some people into certain committees or allow them perform certain functions for the party.

“Whether these requests were granted or not is immaterial. But that is perhaps one of the reasons that he has taken the position against anything this man does. This is the same man that recognized the national chairman, writing to him on the need to submit the report on the finance committee which he headed.

“The chairman has been running away from receiving that report because it is on record that the same Jerry Gana on behalf of the party without using the machinery of the party collected the sum of N500million loan from Skye bank on behalf of the PDP for which the PDP has been dragged to court and is being compelled to pay back.

“Leaders of thought in this party including some elders have prevailed on the chairman not to make this matter known and to save this man from public embarrassment. But as it is the chairman may be left with no option than to drag Jerry Gana before the EFCC to explain his role in obtaining N500 million facility on behalf of the party and let him also explain what he has done with the money.”

Mancini Calls Yaya Toure Unique

Featured Image

Roberto Mancini is obviously keen on bringing Yaya Toure to Inter Milan, calling the player unique.

Toure has a contract with Manchester City that is set to expire in 2017, but his future is under heavy speculation with Guardiola coming in as replacement for Pellegrini.

Mancini’s Inter have been one of the clubs linked with a potential move for the Ivory Coast international, who has received much criticism this season, particularly for his performances in the Champions League.

But Mancini told a news conference: “A player like him has never been seen in Italy.

“Some criticise him for the Champions League, but in Serie A there are no players like him.”

Mancini’s future at San Siro has also been under question following a season that has seen Inter fall to fourth in the table having set the pace at the top in the early stages of the Scudetto race.

But he is keen to remain at the club, saying: “I still have a year’s contract. If the club and fans are happy, I’ll stay. It’s important to understand the situation.

“If we all keep working hard and working together, I think we’ll be able to enjoy some success.”

Sex Change Regrets? Caitlyn Jenner De-Transitioning Later In Future Ignites Curiosity

Featured Image

Ian Halperin, the author of “Kardashian Dynasty: The Controversial Rise of America’s Royal Family” has revealed that a source close to Caitlyn Jenner have confirmed the reality star has made whispers of having ‘sex change regrets’ while hinting she might go back to being Bruce Jenner in a few years time.

His source stated:

It hasn’t been easy for Caitlyn, it has been very hard. She’s thrilled she has raised awareness about how transgender people have long been discriminated against but I think there’s a chance she’ll de-transition in the next couple years.

I don’t think it would surprise anybody in her inner circle. It has been much harder than she anticipated. My heart goes out to her and I know her true friends will be there to support her on whatever path she chooses.

According to Halperin’s source, Caitlyn still retains an attraction to women but that’s arguable as Caitlyn recently suggested on an episode of her E! Network documentary series “I Am Cait” that she would also be interested in dating a man.

Read: Another Caitlyn Jenner! Father Of Five Reveals His Desire To Be A Woman

A representative for Caitlyn told New York Daily that the idea of the Olympic winner re-transitioning to a man was ‘Not worth commenting’ as it was ‘such an idiotic report’ while blandly calling Halperin’s story a lie declaring, ‘Of course it’s not true.’

Read: She-Male Goes To Male Prison: Transgender Woman Gets Sent To All Male Prison. Trouble Anyone?!

Halperin’s speculations might be based on Caitlyn’s past trepidation over her transitioning as a lengthy Vanity Fair story recalled a “panic attack”‘ which Caitlyn had experienced after undergoing facial-feminization surgery, during which she had wondered, “What did I just do? What did I just do to myself?”.

There has been instances where trangenders are known to de-transition and maybe Caitlyn’s case is different, still, we’re watching and waiting.
