Edo State Gov’t Approves Appointment Of New Oba Of Benin

Featured Image

Edo State Government has approved the appointment of His Royal Highness Edaiken N’Uselu, Crown Prince Eheneden Erediauwa as the Oba of Benin.

The approval was issued in a letter dated May 24, 2016 and signed by the Secretary to State Government, Julius Ihonvbere.

The letter explained that the approval was in line with Section 19 (1) of the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Law, 1979 (as amended), adding that the appointment takes effect from ‎April 29, 2016.

The letter read: “It is hereby notified for general information that in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 19 (1) of the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Law, 1979 (as amended) and by virtue of all other laws enabling it in that behalf, the Executive Council of the Edo State Government of Nigeria has approved the appointment of His Royal Highness Edaiken N’Uselu, Crown Prince Eheneden Erediauwa as the Oba of Benin, with effect from 29th day of April, 2016.”

It would be recalled, the palace of the Oba announced the death of Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Erediauwa on April 29 even though it is believed by many Nigerians that he passed on long before the formal announcement.

The Peoples Democratic Party’s Imminent Death – Bamidele Olateju

Featured Image

The Port Harcourt congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has shown us anew that the PDP is dying on the vine as it continues to navigate the many pathways available for a political party to self-destruct. The earlier and unfortunate selection of Ali Modu Sheriff as party chair, the slap fest by Stella Oduah and company at the congress, and the hurriedly assembled caretaker committee are developments that underscore the raging intra-party war and identity crisis rocking the PDP. The party is desperately looking for a leash to tame this runaway bloodhound since they lost the Presidential election, but they are not going to find it. They can only try, they should have closed this barn door three years ago. This slow motion fiasco will continue until it tailspins into the final death spiral, which is imminent.

The views and opinions expressed here are those of Bámidélé Adémólá-Olátéjú and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

The umbrella had long been held together by the access it gave to the federal gravy train of free money. That is why we have largely overlooked the intra-party fault lines. The drama has always played out at the local, state and federal levels with a certain resonance steeped in patronage and graft. The internecine struggle for the soul of the PDP should not surprise anyone because political parties in Nigeria, unlike in advance democracies, are not institutions. Even though the parties have rules governing formal and informal behaviour, they are not institutionalised. With that known, the PDP violated every boundary of their own operations and they had no structural context to shape boundaries of acceptable behaviour and promote the frontiers of responsibility and accountability. While they held the levers of power, the PDP demonstrated remarkable dissonance between party rules, national goals and aspirations and ultimately, the national direction.

PDP is in death throes, I doubt if the party can make a recovery. When President Obasanjo tore his membership card, the die was cast! PDP’s factionalisation became inevitable when an alleged terror sponsor became a strong ally of President Jonathan, accompanying him on visits to Cameroun and Chad, and later becoming party chair. There is definitely something wrong with a party when a fugitive drug baron became more powerful in Ogun State (infra dignitatem!) than a former president. What good can come in the long run from a party where national offices are distributed like party favours to lapdogs and militants?

The disease that afflicted the PDP has found a good substrate in another host – the All Progressives Congress (APC). In both political parties! The dearth of a wider political conjuncture is the cause of the largely irreconcilable positions between the founders and worker bees who have given everything for the party to succeed and certain dominant and ambitious elements who cannot wait to hijack the levers of power and control. That is why it has become a huge task to advance the national democratic cause because individual ambitions and avenues for lining pockets often trumps service and desire for good governance. The civil war in the PDP is a manifestation of the underlying political character of party faithfuls, the character of the Nigerian state, the way we play politics and the structure of electoral competition. The PDP is better dead and cremated. Who knows, something beautiful may come from its ashes. The handful of reasonable men, women and patriots in the PDP should form a new party with a bold institutional framework and the broad objectives of national and intra-party democracy based on the sterling principles of equity, fair play and transparency.

The demise of PDP as we know it has been long in coming. Under Jonathan’s rule, public discussions of national issues and cohesion were debated in increasingly apocalyptic terms among increasingly uncivil adversaries within the same political party. For a party that boasts of being the largest in Africa, the PDP is a victim of its own dominance and hubris. This great unravelling, is the offspring of dissent and a worthy recompense for a party that has spent the last decade working directly against Nigerians. We should welcome the Port Harcourt charade with smiles.

#NeverGiveUp! Mike Epps Graduates High School At Age 45

Featured Image

Mike Epps has graduated high school at the age of 45 as he joined the graduating class of 2016 at Arsenal Technical High in Indianapolis.

Epps began his career as an entertainer at an early age and later went on to sign with Def Comedy Jam in 1995.

While focused on making a name for himself, he missed out on one important thing, earning a high school diploma.

On Friday (May, 20), the successful actor and comedian finally got his high school diploma at an age where most people would have considered themselves too old to even attempt attending high school.

Read: Kylie Jenner Has Graduated High School For Real Guys

Epps gave an honest speech about his accomplishments and encouraged the students.

“This is so emotional to me because I didn’t get a chance to graduate like this. And now I’m 45 years old and just to be amongst you guys is such blessing. I’m so proud of you and I want you to continue to keep pushing on and go to college and get as many degrees as you can.

My beautiful mama that’s sitting in the audience she told me when I was young, she said, “Mike, one day you’re gonna wish you would’ve gotten your education.”

Well, now he has made momma proud. He shared a few captions on Instagram.

He captioned his post with his mother: My mom said today one of her dreams came true. Finally got my high school diploma. From a class clown to becoming world renowned #nevergiveup #mikeepps #unclebuck #TechHS.”

Epps said during his graduating speech:  “I have always been insecure about not having a diploma. I taught myself how to read so sorry MF if I don’t spell right ALL THE TIME lol but I’m proud of who I am. Shoutout the class of 2016. #mikeepps #Nevergiveup”.

He also shared a photo with his daughter who was so proud of her father: “My daughter came to see me graduate. Missing my other girls Mickey, Madison & Moriah. Just want to make y’all proud !!! #Nevergiveup.”

This proves that what so many called an uncalculated risk – the decision by Kiss Daniel and G-WORLDWIDE Entertainment to release “New Era” without any major features – is paying off and is likely the best decision as it shows that Kiss Daniel can hold his own independently.

Should Brands Use Abbreviations When Communicating On Social Media Platforms?

Featured Image

Two banks went at logger heads after one of them used abbreviations in a social media post. This has sparked a debate on the proper way for companies to put across their ads and messages on social media platforms.

Diamond Bank was called out by Sterling Bank and Twitter users after it made a post with abbreviations which some called ‘unprofessional’.

Others clamored for whoever was behind the tweet to be fired.

Diamond Bank tweeted: “U can nw meet ur personal targets wit no hassles. Save on d new Diamond eSUSU platform”.

In its advert, it abbreviated the words You to U, Now to nw, Your to ur, With to wt, The to d.

Sterling Bank replied with: “Hopefully, the targets do not include spelling ability. At Sterling Bank, we ensure all are met :).”

Read: Nigerian Banks Expose Leading Debtors (Must Read)

The debate ensuing from the affair is the professionalism for a bank as prestigious as Diamond Bank Nigeria to be using instant messaging on social media.

One might wonder, “what is the proper way for a company to write on its social media platforms? In full or abbreviated format?

Bear in mind Twitter has a limit of 140 words per tweet, which can be a reason to shorten things sometimes.

Still, there are those of the opinion that Diamond Bank’s use of short forms on its social media platform is normal and doesn’t warrant being criticized harshly.

Tweeting in the Diamond Bank’s defense, one Twitter user stated that the information was easily communicated, even to the layman.

Twitter users comments:

 – Say 👏🏼 No 👏🏼 To 👏🏼 Lousy 👏🏼 Grammar. RT @DiamondBankNG: U can nw meet ur personal targets wit no hassles. Save on d new Diamond platform.

 – @DiamondBankNG. I don’t see any thing wrong with that… Whether you like it or not the message has been passed #Sterling, hustle better!

 – @DiamondBankNG Please fire whoever is managing your Twitter handle ASAP!!!

 – @DiamondBankNG @sterlingbank should be more professional, this shouldn’t be coming from a boring bank like yours.

With these in mind, the question pops up, “Should companies use abbreviations when posting or advertising on their social media platforms?” Share your view.

The Gift Of Literacy; Until Every Child Can Read! Book Donation Tour (25.05.2016)

Featured Image

Literacy is one of the greatest gifts a person could receive – Jen Selinsky

My name is Lami Phillips; an award winning recording artiste, Actress, UN Envoy, Oxfam Ambassador and Educationist.

I would like to draw your attention to the literacy crisis affecting millions of children in Nigeria;

In a country like Nigeria where the number of families living in poverty is on the rise, it’s alarming to note that millions of children from these disadvantaged households do not have access to the reading books they need as Schools are usually expected to serve as complementary repositories of books for children to draw from, however in majority of the public primary schools in Nigeria, it’s hard to find any book library.

Combined with the challenging economy and general challenges facing public education at the Primary level, This problem has greatly contributed to the decline in reading, learning and literacy skills of millions of school children in Nigeria.

In an effort to help address this challenge, I have birthed an initiative in collaboration with AYECI Africa (a social impact organization committed to improving the literacy outcomes of disadvantaged women and children in West Africa) to champion My Gift of Literacy Campaign.

At the heart of this collaboration is a shared vision- “Until Every Child Can Read”

  • I have made it my mission to help raise the much needed awareness and support that would increase the literacy skills and habits of reading among millions of primary school children in need by providing as many reading books as possible to as many public primary schools across Nigeria.

The campaign is currently supported by the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board and Pearson Nigeria

  • I have made it my mission to build one library/book bank per year. LONDON EVENING STANDARD

Chelsea have stepped up negotiations with Roma over their midfielder Radja Nainggolan.

Jonathan Reacts To Rumours Of ‘Self Exile In Cote d’Ívoire’

Featured Image

The immediate past President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has dismissed rumours suggesting that he is on self-exile in Côte d’Ivoire, just as his close associates averred that he had no cause to permanently relocate from the country.

Speaking on behalf of Jonathan, a close political associate, Mr. Yinka Odumakin told Vanguard Newspaper that the former president said:

“I am not in exile; it is quite unfortunate that anybody is insinuating that I am in exile. I am now a private citizen. Since I left office, this is my second visit to Côte d’Ivoire; I have gone to so many countries in recent times as part of my efforts to promote peace. What I am doing is a global tour since leaving office, and this is my second visit to Côte d’Ivoire. It is unfortunate that anybody should insinuate that I am in exile. I am not in exile. When I finish what I am doing here, I will continue my visit all over the world.”

Also reacting to the rumour, a relative of the former president, Engr Mike Ogiasa, said:

“it is not true that the former President is on the run. We, his kinsmen trust him. When it is appropriate for him to speak he will speak. Jonathan has not gone into exile. Everybody knows a man of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s calibre will not do that.”

“It is reasonable for anybody to realize that the former president will take some time out to write about Nigeria in a book form. If he is not seen for sometime, it means he wants a quiet life. I should expect the former president to take some time out in a very quiet environment without any distraction to put his experience about Nigeria into writing in a book form.”

In the same vein, the former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Austin Opara, said:

“I wonder where some sections of the media are getting such rumours from. I can tell you confidently that our people in the South-South are solidly behind him. Why should he go into exile when his people are not against him. I can also say confidently that he was in contact with his political associates ahead of the last weekend’s convention in Port-Harcourt. So there is no iota of truth in the news making rounds that he has gone into exile.”

Also, Senator Nimi Barigha-Amange said:

“I spoke with the former President on Friday. He told me that he was going to London to spend some times with his children. He did not indicate that he was under any stress and did not tell me that he was going on exile.

“What he said was that he would have loved to be at the Peoples Democratic Party convention in Port Harcourt, but he couldn’t make it because he needed to be with his children. He told me that he was in touch with the leaders of the party across board and assured me that the crisis in the party would be resolved. It is not true that he is in exile.”

“The president has no reason to go into exile. He has not committed any offense. Please ignore the report about his exile. He will certainly come back to the country when he is through with spending time with his children”

There were rumours making the round that the former president exiled the country to a safer haven in Cote d’Ivoire in other to avoid the current leadership crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Steven Whittaker : “Perseverance Was Key To New Contract”

Featured Image

Having been handed a new one-year deal by Norwich City despite not playing for them in the Premier League since October, Scotland full-back Steven Whittaker has been talking about earning his extended stay at Carrow Road.

He told the club’s official website: “It’s in my nature to get on with it in the background and if the opportunity came around I would have been as ready as possible.

image

“I never gave up, I kept doing my stuff and I’ve been rewarded with another year’s contract, maybe from just persevering when things weren’t quite going my way.

“The manager said to me that my best attributes can come forward when we’re the dominant side, and we’re going to be that in the Championship.

“We’re going to attack and hopefully I can contribute to that again, do my stuff on the pitch and help Norwich win football matches. He’s seen the job I did for him in the Championship and he knows that I’m capable of doing that again.”

Opinion Divided On The Position Of The National Chairman Of PDP

Featured Image

There are emerging discrepancies in the injunctions of two courts as regards to the position of the caretaker committee constituted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at their convention held on Saturday May 21, 2016.

The Punch Newspaper gathered that the Lagos State Division of the Federal High Court declared as null and void the caretaker committee constituted to take over the affairs of the PDP from its acting National Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff.

Confirming the stance of the court, the judge, Justice Ibrahim Buba, in a ruling on Monday, directed the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, to arrest anybody who parades ‘himself or herself’ as the  acting chairman of the party pending the determination of a suit before it.

Buba had ruled in a suit FHC/L/CS/613/2016, filed by the acting national chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff; the national secretary, Professor Adewale Oladipo; and national auditor, Fatai Adeyanju, praying the court to abort the convention, pending the determination of the substantive suit.

In a related development, the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt granted an interim injunction restraining Sheriff and Oladipo, who were recently removed from office, from parading themselves as the Principals of the Party, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice brought before it by the PDP.

The presiding judge, Justice A. M. Liman, granted a restraining order on any member of the party, who was removed from office, from receiving nominations and or submitting names to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice brought by the Party.

Vanguard Newspaper, however, said that the court ordered the INEC to recognise the just elected National Caretaker Committee of the PDP, Sen. Ahmed Markarfi, in all matters pertaining the party, pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice.

In contradiction, Premium Times stated that Justice Buba of Lagos High Court on Tuesday, ordered Sheriff to continue serving as the party’s chairman, as he nullified that of Makarfi.
