The Domot singer was served the first of the injunctions on the 31st of May, where a Federal High Court in Lagos issued a notice that “prevents him from performing at any event or any form of recording for the time being unless with the approval of Ericmany Limited.”

And on Friday, June 3, Lydia Obasi Hills, a US entertainment lawyer representing Eric Many, secured a temporary injunction that will prevent Runtown from performing in the US. “Runtown’s injunction sends a message to Nigerian artists that it’s important to respect the sanctity of contracts, and to work with their labels who often invest large sums into promoting their careers,” Obasi said in a statement.

Obasi had claimed that Runtown’s breach of his contract would cause Eric Many incalculable losses because of the growing rise of Nigerian music internationally.

United States District Judge Kiyo A. Matsumoto agreed that it would be “virtually impossible to quantify the losses that EricMany will suffer if it is not affiliated with Runtown during this critical time for Nigerian music.” The ban sees Runtown barred from “singing, appearing, hosting, performing, promoting, arranging, facilitating, scheduling, advertising or permitting the performance of Douglas Jack Agu “Runtown” at any venue on or after June 3, 2016.”

Obasi Hills added: It’s wrong for an artist to reap the benefits that signing to a label provides, only to leave thereafter to the detriment of the label, and after the artist has achieved fame and success in large part due to the label’s investments in the artist’s career.  EricMany has invested over $600,000.00 USD into Runtown’s career and has yet to re-coup the totality of its investment. ”

In the Republic of Niger, “hundreds of assailants” attacked a military post in the town of Bosso on Friday evening, the defence ministry said in a statement that gave a “provisional toll” of 30 Nigerien and two Nigerian soldiers killed and 67 wounded.

“On the enemy’s side, several dead and injured were taken away,” the ministry said.

“Boko Haram elements effectively took control of the town temporarily, but now they were dislodged,” a security source from the ministry said.

“Our defence and security forces carried out a counter-attack this morning which enabled them to retake all positions in the town of Bosso.

“The situation is under control and calm has returned.”

Speaking on the matter, a former MP Elhaj Aboubacar said:

“They drove up at twilight, shouting Allahu Akbar (God is Great), they fired a lot of shots and torched many places in Bosso.”

“We don’t know where our military went, but one thing is for sure, Boko Haram were able to do what they liked until dawn.”

Since February last year, Niger has been troubled by Boko Haram attacks in its southeast region.

‘Buhari Not Ill, He’s Hale And Hearty’ – Presidency

Featured Image

The Presidency has reacted swiftly with a rebuttal to media reports earlier today (Saturday), that President Muhammadu Buhari is ill and is being treated at the presidential villa, saying the he (Buhari) is “hale and hearty.”

Premium Times had earlier reported that the president is having an infection in his left ear, otherwise called Meniere Disease, an illness which has drastically reduced his outings in recent days.

The online media house also averred that as a result of this, the president had to, on three recent occasions, cancel official trips within and outside the country, as he was then represented at those events by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

However, the presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, dismissed the report as untrue, adding that his principal is “as fit as a fiddle.” The Cable reports.

He said: “Didn’t you see pictures of him receiving Anglican bishops yesterday (Friday)? Did he look sick? The president is as fit as a fiddle. Anyone who says he is sick is telling lies.”

“That is a figment of the person’s imagination. Just yesterday he received the primate of the Anglican Communion and arch bishops at the presidential villa. He also received former President Olusegun Obasanjo (pictured). He is hale and hearty.  The imagination of whoever says that is on overdrive.”

On why the vice-president was asked to go to places the president initially planned to visit, Adesina said:

“The presidency is one. The president has a right to delegate duties to his deputy, who is the vice-president, and that is what he has done.”

‘I’ve Met All My Bail Conditions, Release Me’ – Fani-Kayode To EFCC

Featured Image

Former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has on Friday called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to either release him since he has met all his bail conditions or charge him to court.

READ ALSO: Fani-Kayode’s Aide Bewails As EFCC Obtains Another Warrant To Detain Him For 21 More Days

This is contained in a statement signed by his Media Assistant, Jude Ndukwe, on his behalf, and made available to Journalists in Abuja.

The statement read: “This is to refute the false information being peddled by a section of the media that former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, who has remained illegally detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) since May 9, 2016, has not met his bail conditions as set by EFCC.

“Chief Fani-Kayode has since fulfilled the conditions for his bail but rather than take the honourable path of releasing him pending any charge brought against him, the anti-graft agency moved him from Abuja to Lagos where they obtained a questionable warrant to further detain him illegally for another three weeks.”

“This is all in a bid to forcefully extract statements from him that would implicate his principal, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and other PDP leaders including serving governors whom he served as Director of Media and Publicity of the PDP Campaign Organisation.”

“It is obvious that the EFCC have other opposition leaders whom they have referred to as “big fish” in their radar and see Fani-Kayode as the only avenue through which they can “nail” such leaders, hence, the anti-graft agency’s puerile attempt to keep him in their custody beyond the legally required length of time in order to break him, his family, and force him to implicate innocent people just to achieve a more sinister motive of further silencing the opposition.”

“It is even more worrisome that the activities of the anti-graft agency has reached an all-time low as they are insisting that the former Minister of Culture and Tourism should name publishers, editors, journalists and bloggers he allegedly gave money to during the election campaigns. What has journalists who covered the PDP campaign as much as that of APC got to do with this? This is the height of it all!”

“The further insistence by EFCC that Fani-Kayode should deposit a sum of $1m before he could be let go shows how desperate the agency is to keep him in their custody and deny him his fundamental rights as guaranteed under Sections 33,34,35,37 and 41 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended)  and Articles 4, 5, 6 and 12 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act Cap 10 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990. This further confirms our position that even though he has met his bail conditions, the EFCC have no intention of letting him enjoy his bail nor do they have any intention of playing by the rules.”

“While we have copiously acknowledged in the past and still do that EFCC have a constitutional and mandatory duty to carry out their statutory function as empowered by our laws, it is also our sincerest belief that these functions can be carried out within the ambit of the law and without being tainted with vendetta, vindictiveness and politics. These are what discredit the agency and cast doubts in the minds of Nigerians about the sincerity of the fight against corruption.”

“In other climes where the fight against corruption has been largely successful, suspects are thoroughly investigated discretely, arrested after investigation has been concluded, charged to court and punished if found guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. But here, we declare our targets guilty in the media, arrest them before commencing investigation and use the courts to obtain contentious orders to keep the suspects in custody indefinitely in lieu of a court-imposed post-prosecution sanction.”

“The EFCC should allow Femi Fani-Kayode his freedom especially after having met their set bail conditions or charge him before a court of competent jurisdiction forthwith. He is not afraid to defend himself.”

Meet Muhammad Ali: The Boy Whose Bike Got Stolen And Became The G.O.A.T.

This was his wish “Cassius Clay is a slave name. I didn’t choose it, and I didn’t want it. I am Muhammad Ali, a free name, and I insist on people using it when speaking to me and of me.” and we shall respect it.

Muhammad Ali was born January 17, 1942 and passed away June 3, 2016. He was an American boxing professional and was highly regarded as the greatest heavyweight to grace the ring.

He was named the Sportsman of the Century in 1999 by Sports Illustrated. With the BBC also crowning him the Sports Personality of the Century.

The Greatest was introduced into the world of boxing at age 12, by police officer and boxing coach Joe E. Martin, after he met a young Ali fuming over a thief who took his bike. Ali told the officer, he was going to whup the thief, with the coach suggesting he first learn boxing.

The Greatest made his amateur boxing debut in 1954 and won six Kentucky Golden Glove titles, two National Golden Glove titles, an Amateur Athletic Union national title and the light heavyweight gold medal at the Olympics in Rome.

His amateur record was an impressive 100 wins with just five losses.

In 1964, Muhammad Alli won the world heavyweight championship, after causing a major upset by beating Sonny Liston. After his victory, he turned to the ringside reporters and said “eat your words” “I am the greatest. I shook up the world. I am the prettiest thing that has ever lived”.

He was the youngest boxer at 22 to claim the title from a residing champion. In a rematch against Sonny Liston, Muhammad Ali was declared winner in less than 2 minutes. In a match many referred to as being controversial.

After he claimed his first heavyweight title -when he beat Liston- he converted to Islam, dropping his “slave name” and joining the Nation of Islam.

Three years after, The Greatest refused to be conscripted into the U.S. military, citing his believes and opposition to America’s involvement in the Vietnam War.

He was arrested, stripped of his titles, after he was found guilty of draft evasion charges. His boxing licence was revoked and he was fined $10 000. The Greatest did not fight for almost four years. In 1971, Muhammad Ali’s conviction was overturned, after his appeal went through.

Upon his return to the boxing world, Ali wanted to win back his heavyweight title. But ended up losing to Joe Frazier, his first professional loss. The bout saw the introduction of the rope-a-dope strategy.

In 1973, Ken Norton broke Ali’s jaw while giving him the second loss of his career. After initially seeking retirement, Ali won a controversial decision against Norton in their second bout, leading to a rematch at Madison Square Garden on January 28, 1974, with Joe Frazier—who had recently lost his title to George Foreman.

Ali won the rematch against Joe Frazier, by unanimous decision, setting up a fight with George Foreman in Kinshasha, Zaire. The bout was tagged “Rumble in the Jungle”

As usual, Ali was confident and colorful before the fight. He told interviewer David Frost, “If you think the world was surprised when Nixon resigned, wait ’til I whup Foreman’s behind!” He told the press, “I’ve done something new for this fight. I done wrestled with an alligator, I done tussled with a whale; handcuffed lightning, thrown thunder in jail; only last week, I murdered a rock, injured a stone, hospitalized a brick; I’m so mean I make medicine sick. Ali was wildly popular in Zaire, with crowds chanting “Ali, bomaye” (“Ali, kill him”) wherever he went.

The Greatest was eloquent and had his way with words that influenced people around him.

Ali employed the rope-a-dope against Foreman, and emerged victorious against all odds.

In the eighth round, Ali dropped an exhausted Foreman with a combination at center ring; Foreman failed to make the count. Against the odds, and amidst pandemonium in the ring, Ali had regained the title by knockout.

In reflecting on the fight, George Foreman later said: “I’ll admit it. Muhammad outthought me and outfought me.”

Ali’s next opponents included Chuck Wepner, Ron Lyle, and Joe Bugner. Wepner, a journeyman known as “The Bayonne Bleeder”, stunned Ali with a knockdown in the ninth round; Ali would later say he tripped on Wepner’s foot.

The Greatest agreed to a third fight with Joe Frazier in Manila. The bout was tagged Thrilla in Manila. Ali adopted the rope-a-dope in the latter stages of the fight and won the bout, after Frazier retired.

An ailing Ali said afterwards that the fight “was the closest thing to dying that I know”, and, when later asked if he had viewed the fight on videotape, reportedly said, “Why would I want to go back and see Hell?” After the fight he cited Frazier as “the greatest fighter of all times next to me”.

Following the Manila bout, Ali fought Jean-Pierre Coopman, Jimmy Young, and Richard Dunn, winning the last by knockout.

Despite pleas to retire, Muhammad Ali fought in other bouts, that proved to be detrimental to his health. Before calling time on his career in 1981.

Ali is the only boxer to have won the heavyweight championship three different lateral times; in 1964, 1974 and 1978.

Throughout his fighting career, the Greatest of All Time floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee.

“What’s really hurting me – the name Islam is involved, and Muslim is involved and causing trouble and starting hate and violence. Islam is not a killer religion, Islam means peace. I couldn’t just sit home and watch people label Muslims as the reason for this problem.” In the aftermath of the 2001 World Trade Center attacks.

On The Vietnam War

“Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights?”

“Man, I ain’t got no quarrel with them Viet Cong. No Vietcong ever called me nigger.”

“I’m not going 10,000 miles from home to help murder and burn another poor nation simply to continue the domination of white slave masters of the darker people the world over.”

USA 0-2 Colombia: James Rodriguez And Zapata Down Hosts

Featured Image

The Copa America Centenario got off to an amazing start with Colombia thrashing hosts, USA 2-0, as James Rodriguez and Cristian Zapata dealt the blow.

The Copa America is being hosted for the first time outside of the South America, with USA playing hosts to the continental competition.

And Colombia saw to it that the party was ruined for the hosts in the curtain raiser at Santa Clara.

Zapata opened the scoring in the 8th minute, as he scored his first international goal, after latching on to Cardona’s corner.

And captain James Rodriguez was keen to forget a terrible season with Real Madrid, that saw him sit out the UCL final, after he converted from the spot in the 41st minute.

However, Colombia – a quarterfinalist at last year’s tournament – will be sweating on the fitness of Rodriguez, who was forced off the field just past the hour-mark due to a shoulder injury, after landing awkwardly.

FG Orders Nigerian Banks To Stop Sacking Workers

Featured Image

The federal government of Nigeria has called on banks nationwide to forthwith, stop the retrenchment of workers.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, and made available to newsmen in Abuja on Friday.

The statement read: “Following the high spate of petitions and complaints from stakeholders in the Banking, Insurance and Financial Institutions, I hereby direct the suspension of the on-going retrenchment in the sector pending the outcome of the conciliatory meetings in the industry.”

“This is as a result of the apprehension by my office of the various disputes in the sector in accordance and in compliance with the provisions of the labour laws of Nigeria.”

“This decision is further predicated on the fact that the continued retrenchment and redundancy by the banks and other financial institutions are jeopardizing the outcome of the conciliatory and mediatory processes being undertaking by the Ministry of Labour and Employment.”

“In this wise, all the retrenchments and redundancies done in the last four months and all proposed ones should be put on hold, pending the outcome of the proposed stakeholders’ summit for the Banking, Insurance and Financial Institutions’ employers and employees, slated for the first week of July, 2016.”

Ogoniland Clean-Up: The Niger Delta People Have Not Fought In Vain – Buhari

Featured Image

Today marks another milestone in the life of our administration. I recall the time as a Military Head of State when I visited Bodo Town in Ogoniland. During that visit, I commissioned a large fish pond and planted a tree as a sign of the government’s concern for the environment. Unfortunately since then, the degradation of land, water and the air has done huge damage to the fragile ecosystem of the Niger Delta, particularly Ogoniland.

Oil exploration and production have been going on in Nigeria for six decades. Oil has given a boost to the Nigerian economy. But the ecosystem of the Niger Delta has been severely damaged. Fishing and agriculture have been badly affected. There are Acts, enactments, guidelines and regulations to govern the operators of the oil industry. However, either because of lack of will or willful non-compliance with environmental laws and regulations, the environment was put in jeopardy.

The various communities in the Niger Delta region, noting the negative impact of oil production and lack of consideration for best oil field practices, quite rightly commenced the struggle for justice and fair play in the conduct of business by the oil industry operators. This process unfortunately led to the loss of lives and properties. International concerns were raised, while past governments were urged to take decisive steps in addressing the damage.

The administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo engaged the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to undertake an environment assessment study of Ogoniland. The UNEP report detailed a number of issues for consideration while recommendations were made for its implementation. The report was submitted to my predecessor in office in 2011 but the implementation was not accorded the necessary support it needed. The people of Ogoniland continued to suffer from pollution of air, land and water.

On Thursday January 8th, 2015, in the course of our presidential campaign, we made an unscheduled stop in Ogoniland. After listening to the address presented on behalf of the Ogoni people by Senator Magnus Abe, we made a solemn commitment that, if given the opportunity, we shall implement the UNEP report on Ogoniland. We are determined to put right the wrongs of the past, where the people of this land were treated unfairly and their environment unduly degraded and polluted.

Today we are in Ogoniland, in the heart of the Niger Delta, to fulfill our promise to you, and to bring justice and succour to our people. The clean-up of this land will require change on the part of all of those who deal with the Niger Delta environment, particularly the oil companies and our communities. The tempo of activities for this assignment increased when my cabinet was constituted. The Honourable minister of Environment consulted all relevant ministries that could actualise the UNEP Report. Several stakeholders’ meetings and activities were held. We are therefore laying a solid foundation today for the restoration of the fragile ecosystem of Ogoniland and the rest of the Niger Delta. This is an epoch making event in the history of Nigeria.

The UNEP Report indicated a timeline of 25-30 years to achieve a full restoration of the environment in the Niger Delta. The first step begins with a solid foundation which will be brought about through consultation, transparency, accountability, investing in people and the environment.

There is therefore a serious need for all Nigerians, irrespective of political, ethnic or religious affiliations, to support the great effort of this administration. I have given approval to the constitution of the necessary institutional framework that will drive a hitch free implementation of the UNEP Report. Our lives, socio-economic and political interests depend to a great extent on the quality of our environment.

Let me seize this opportunity to sound a note of warning. The current illegal oil refining activities and oil theft in the country will no longer be tolerated. The regulators in the oil industry must also live up to expectations. They must ensure that oil companies carry out their operations in line with universal oil field best practices. This administration is laying a foundation for change, therefore the rule of law, good governance, as well as the security of our people are paramount.

The government places high emphasis on the diversification of our economy. The drive is to ensure that the Nigerian economy is strong and capable of supporting her teeming youths through jobs and wealth creation. The clean-up of Ogoniland has embedded in the programme, livelihood and sustainable development components. A Centre of Excellence that will identify the skills gaps and provide the necessary training will be put in place. The methodology for the clean-up will ensure job creation for the youths. The agro-allied industries required for the processing of the agricultural produce will also be put in place in the course of the clean-up project.

The host communities, as well as transit communities are enjoined to keep their environment clean, devoid of oil pollution. The reports of oil pollution in the Nigerian environment show that over 70 percent – a significant percentage – are due to sabotage and willful vandalism of oil companies’ facilities. The recent upsurge in the blasting of pipelines in the operation areas of Shell Petroleum Development Company, Chevron Nigeria Limited, and Nigerian Agip Oil Company is a case in point. These incidents brought about drastic reduction in our daily oil production, as well as the quantum of gas that feed power plants for electricity generation.

Inadequate power supply has consequential implications on our economy and wealth creation. The action of these saboteurs of our economy therefore increases the poverty cycle everywhere, including in their own communities. Given the current situation in the Niger Delta, it must be borne in mind that destroying the Niger Delta environment by oil companies, militants, or oil thieves has the same end result. The important thing is that the present government can do justice to all without us destroying our environment. I enjoin the traditional rulers, the elite, opinion leaders, the press, women as well as youths of Ogoniland and the Niger Delta to work conscientiously and to ensure that we put an end to all oil installation vandalism.

I wish to place on record the appreciation of the Federal Government of Nigeria to the United Nations Environment Programme which continues to support the efforts aimed at making our environment a safe place to dwell in. It is my hope that we will all join hands to make this epoch-making event a grand success. I hope to come and inspect progress of this assignment before long and I expect to see visible improvement in the environmental conditions here.

The choice is for you to keep your environment clean and nurture the Niger Delta back to its lost glory. The beginning of this clean-up exercise is clear evidence that Ken Saro Wiwa and other sons of Ogoniland who fought hard for environmental justice did not fight in vain. Let this mark the beginning of the restoration, not just of the environment of Ogoniland, but of peace and prosperity to the great land and people of Ogoniland. May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

This address was delivered by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari and the launch of the clean up of Ogoniland and Other Oil Impacted Communities In the Niger Delta at Bodo, Rivers State on Thursday, June 2, 2016.
