Death Of Kano Student In India: The Untold Story – Salihu Yakasai

Featured Image

It is often difficult to put forward facts and figures or advance reasons when emotions are high. This is even more so when a serious and solemn event like death is being used to appeal to sentiments and achieve a aim. That was the situation we found ourselves in Kano with the death in India of a Kano State student, Jibril Abubakar Jibril.

The article was written by Salihu Tanko Yakasai. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Jibril was until his death studying Pharmacy at the Bapuji Pharmacy College in India, on Kano State government scholarship.

While it was indeed painful to see tempers whipped up high by some people whose aims were actually not to commiserate with the deceased’s family or even sympathise with the suffering of the late student prior to his death but rather to use the unfortunate incidence for certain ends, one still felt the need for restraint to allow tempers calm before setting the record straight.

READ ALSO: Being African In India: ‘We Are Seen As Demons’

The most important information on the travails of the deceased student that was conveniently ignored by hate mongers was that the late Jibril was actually involved in a fatal road accident in India while travelling very late at night on April 4, 2016. It involved not only him, but also a fellow student, Usman Safiyanu Jaafar.

However, while Usman Jaafar sustained mainly bruises that were treated and he was discharged from the hospital almost immediately, Jibril was not as lucky. He sustained serious neck injuries that required surgery. And because of the cordial relationship between the school and the Kano State government, the Bapuji Pharmacy College did not waste time in taking care of him while they contacted the government.

The State government’s link man in India, a consultant also serving like the guide of all the Kano students there, immediately sent an email to the Scholarships Board and other government figures. He broke the sad news and informed the authorities that a relative of Jibril also on scholarship in the same institution had signed a consent form for an immediate surgery. The consultant equally sent through another form to Jibril’s father back in Kano to sign for further surgery to continue.

The uncle of the student was then called to the Scholarships Board where he was briefed on the sad development and the consent form was presented to him. The duly signed form was then posted back to India.

However, because of the medical report the government received and the critical nature of the student’s condition, and after Governor Abdulllahi Umar Ganduje was briefed about the situation, the state government promptly sponsored two members of his family – his mother and a brother – to travel to Bangalore to look after him.

The state government also requested that Jibril be given the best care he could get, and that was how he was transferred to the best hospital in Bangalore despite the doctors saying his survival chance was just about 10 percent.

The governor directed the Executive Secretary of the Scholarships Board to keep a tab on developments around the patient and also keep him abreast of the situation as it unfolded. As such, the Scholarship Board was on daily contact with the doctors in India, the college’s principal, Jibril’s mother and the consultant who was monitoring him. On days his condition allowed it, officials of the Board even got to speak to Jibril himself.

When the student eventually died, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology immediately facilitated the transportation of his remains, alongside his mother and brother back to Nigeria. This was done as urgently as possible, and in line with the Islamic injunctions on funeral and the need for the deceased student to be given a befitting burial as ordained by Islam.

The foregoing has shown the level of concern and commitment the Kano State Government has shown on this unfortunate incident, contrary to the falsehood peddled since the death of Jibril. Indeed, no one can rescue a soul whose time is up but, for sure, the government did its very best to help Jibril and his family in their hours of need.

The Kano State Government has so far paid a total sum of $27,474 (Twenty seven thousand, four hundred and seventy four dollars) to settle the medical bills of late Jibril and other related expenses. His school was up to its responsibility by paying up the initial bills for emergency care before contacting the government. Immediately the government came into the picture, it refunded the bills accrued by the school in giving the early care and continued from there till the end.

With all the efforts of the government, one wonders why anyone would go about circulating conjectures on the neglect of the deceased by the administration in Kano State. Nothing could be more appalling than seizing on the grief of a family and turning it into political mischief, which is what has happened so far.

May the soul of Jibril find repose and the Almighty Allah grant him Al Jannah Firdaus. May his family equally find comfort in this difficult period. Ameen.‎

EFCC Recruitment: Over 300,000 Nigerians Jostle For 750 Slots

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced that it received more than 300,000 applications from interested Nigerians for the 750 positions it recently advertised.

The announcement was made by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr Osita Nwaja, in Enugu when he visited the Enugu zonal office of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Nwaja said that the recruitment was segmented, adding that the first phase of the exercise ended on June 26.

“We had more than 300,000 applicants that applied for the 750 positions which are in three cadres, junior, middle and senior cadres.

“We are considering a whole lot of junior staff so that they will grow in the system.

“The criteria were well spelt out and those that met them wrote the examination,” he said.

He said that by the recruitment, the EFCC had moved to fortify its ranks in view of the onerous task of fighting corruption.

“The fight against corruption is fundamental to everything we do in this country. It is a fight we cannot afford to lose.

“We must keep on recruiting foot soldiers to meet our objective as it is geared toward the direction of making Nigeria greater,” he said.

The director said that the commission would not fail Nigerians, but could not fight corruption alone.

“We cannot do this alone and that is why we are always reaching out to the media.

“We have found in NAN a veritable ally in this task of curbing corruption in the country.

“We want to leverage on your wide reach, credibility and accessibility to achieve our mandate.

“A lot of work is going on at the zonal office of our commission.

“If this fight against corruption must be won, all Nigerians and institutions must join as this affects the common man,” Nwaja said.

ASUU Frowns At FG’s Scrapping Of Post-UTME

Featured Image

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has frowned at the directive given by the Federal Government that post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) conducted by Nigerian universities as entry requirement for undergraduate degree programmes be scrapped.

READ ALSO: Scared Of FG Sanctions? UNIBEN Suspends Post-UTME

This is just as the union held that the quality of tertiary education in the country could only get better if institutions are allowed to regulate their students’ admission process.

READ ALSO: FG Officially Cancels Post-UTME, Threatens Sanctions

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos, ASUU President, Comrade Biodun Ogunyemi, who was not too pleased with the directive stated that it would encroach on the autonomy of the institutions.

“I think government should give these institutions the chance to regulate themselves,” he said.

“They should decide for themselves, the process they dim fit to admit their students. The Senate of universities for example, should decide on the process they want to use in selecting candidates.

“We do not think it’s right for government to decide the method of screening of the candidates, indeed, we want to attain some level of sanity and quality in the system.”

READ ALSO: JAMB: Nigerian Govt Scraps Post UTME, Pegs Cut-Off Points At 180

On why universities collect money during the conduct of the Post-UTME, he said:

“Some of the arguments raised in this entire episode is that universities or tertiary institutions were using the conduct of such examination to make money,” he said.

“But the truth is, these institutions are poorly funded. If universities for example are properly funded, will the vice-chancellors be looking for other means of making money?

“In the last seven months, university workers have been receiving incomplete salaries, that is, the disbursement of funds for payment of salaries has always been inadequate.

“When situations like this arise, the managements will not be left with any choice than to look inwards and seek means of meeting such needs. “And one of such strategies is by conducting such examination.”

Ogunyemi noted that the state universities were worst hit for many of them had yet to receive subvention in the last one year.

“Actually we in ASUU frown at extortion of any type from students or candidates but the government too should be alive to its responsibilities by providing the enabling environment that will aid teaching, learning and research,’’ he said

Ekweremadu Petitions Int’l Community, Says ‘Nigeria’s Democracy In Grave Danger’

Featured Image

The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has written a petition to the parliament of the United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), governments of the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK) and other foreign missions, over “an attempt by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to truncate Nigeria’s democracy.”

READ ALSO: Trial On Alleged Forgery: Saraki, Ekweremadu, Others Plead Not Guilty

The petition was sent on Tuesday; barely 24 hours after the federal government arraigned him, his principal, Senate President, Bukola Saraki and two others on alleged forgery of 2015 Senate Standing Rules in an Abuja High Court.

In the two-paged letter, titled “Re: Trumped up Charges Against the Presiding Officers of the Eighth Senate: Nigerian Democracy is in Grave Danger”, Ekweremadu insisted that Buhari’s government wants to silence him as the highest ranking opposition leader in the country by prosecuting him for alleged forgery.

He attached copies of the court summons, and other relevant documents, relating to the matter, to his letter.

READ ALSO: Senate Accuses Nigerian Govt Of Plot To Send Saraki, Ekweremadu To Prison

Ekweremadu called on the international community to go through the documents and determine if the trial was justifiable or one purely borne out of political vendetta.

He also noted that neither his name nor that of the President of the Senate featured either in the petition by aggrieved members of the Senate Unity Forum, SUF, or during the investigation of the petition by the police.

“You may further wish to judge for yourself whether this unfolding scenario, coupled with the clampdown on the opposition, such as targeted arrests and indefinite detention of opposition figures and dissenting voices in spite of court pronouncements and in clear violation of the Nigerian Constitution, as well as the sustained marginalisation of the South-east and South-south geopolitical zones of Nigeria, do not constitute a grave danger to the nation’s hard-won democracy,” he said.

The letter added: “I wish to forward to you the court summons containing the trumped up charges preferred against my person; the President of the Senate, His Excellency, Senator Bukola Saraki, CON; and two others.

“I also wish to appeal to you to kindly find time to read through the annexures – petition by members of the Senate Unity Forum, statements by persons interrogated, and the police report – to see if we appeared anywhere in these documents.

“You may, thereafter, judge for yourself whether the federal government, acting through the Attorney-General of the Federation, has any justification whatsoever to generate our names for trial.

“The list of the accused persons appear to have been politically generated because you cannot by the documents attached, relate any of our names to the offence for which we are now being charged.

“Moreover, the rules and principles of fair hearing have not been adhered to because the police have not interacted with neither me nor the President of the Senate as at the time of writing this letter.

“You may also wish to judge for yourself whether this trial orchestrated against me is not a political trial, calculated witch-hunt, barefaced intimidation, and a clear attempt to emasculate the parliament and silence me as the leader and highest ranking member of the opposition in Nigeria.

“Meanwhile, it would also be recalled that an attempt was made on my life on November 17, 2015. The Nigerian security agencies did nothing, even though the incident was duly reported. This is for your information and reflection.”

When contacted on the letter written by Ekweremadu to the international community, the presidency stated that he would not break words on the matter.

Troops Kill Scores Of Boko Haram Fighters, Rescue Hostages In Borno State

Troops of 121 Task Force Battalion, 26 Task Force Brigade, accompanied by a large number of Civilian JTF, yesterday, slaughtered scores of Boko Haram fighters during clearance operations on Ngoshe and Gava villages close to Gwoza.

A statement from the Army headquarters in Abuja signed by its spokesperson, Col Sani Usman, read:

Today, Tuesday 28th June 2016, troops of 121 Task Force Battalion, 26 Task Force Brigade, accompanied by a large number of Civilian JTF from Gwoza, embarked on a very aggressive patrol that dislodged remnants  Boko Haram terrorists hibernating at Ngoshe and Gava villages, located close to Gwoza on the mountainous terrain.

The essence of the robust patrol which was supported by the Nigeria Air Force and Cameroonian Defence Forces who provided air cover and real time Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance, was to clear the remnants of the terrorists hiding in the mountainous area and rescue all persons held hostages by the Boko Haram terrorists.

While advancing towards their objective in Ngoshe, the patrol team encountered Boko Haram terrorists.  They have to clear the delay positions staged by the terrorists through the support of the Nigeria Air Force fighter jets.

Although the number of terrorists killed could not be ascertained, quite a number of them where seen falling over the mountains when engaged. It is equally believed several others escaped with gun shot wounds.

The troops were however able to recover quite a number of arms and ammunitions. These include;  1 Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) tube, 4 RPG Bombs, 1 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), 1 Fabrique Nationale (FN) rifle and 3 AK-47 rifles.

Other items recovered include 1 Sub-Machine Gun(SMG), 1 Locally made Pistol, a locally made Double-Barrel gun, 1 Smoke Grenade, 243 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition and 1 round of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition.

They also recovered 18 rounds of MI16 rifle, 3 G3 Rifle magazines, 2 AK-47 magazines, 1 mobile telephone handset and a SIM card, as well as a pair of military desert camouflage uniform.

Other items were  an address card, 3 Boko Haram terrorists flags and a Toyota Hilux vehicle painted in desert camouflage colour and motorcycles.

The troops did not find any hostage in Gava. However, they rescued 16 civilians held in Ngoshe prison, while many residents of the town saw it as an opportunity to flee from the town. Both the rescued and freed persons are being profiled by the troops.

Workers’ Strike Grounds Activities In Kogi State

Featured Image

Social and economic activities in Kogi State were totally grounded following the industrial action embarked on by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the state to protest the non-payment of their salaries.

The Leadership of organised labour had on Friday directed workers in the state public service to embark on an indefinite strike from June 27.

On Monday; the first day of the industrial action, civil servants in the state defied the order issued by the organized labour as they went about their daily activities.

But on day 2, the strike action began to gather momentum.

Daily Sun gathered that commercial banks operating in the state, also showed their support for the industrial action as all businesses in banks were left on standstill.

Quite a number of customers were said to have left their banks in disappointment as they were unable to achieve their aims due to the strike.

Long queues of customers were also noticed at the ATM points of the banks.

Meanwhile, the State Head of Service, Mrs. Hassanatu Kehinde Lawal, who spoke to journalists on the strike action, condemned the decision of the organised labour to instigate workers to go on strike, adding that issue of delay in salaries was never caused by the Governor or any of his appointees.

She disclosed that the accounts departments of various ministries should be held responsible for the delay in the payment of salaries.

She said schedule for payments to the civil servants had been prepared but that the delay to be paid by the bank was the handiwork of some accountants of some Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs).

The Head of Service, therefore, appealed to the workers to continue to show patience, stressing that the government was determined to ensure that every worker was paid.

Gloria Okore had delivered a set of triplets, two girls and a boy on May 10, in Bessylva Hospital and Maternity Home, located at 60, Surulere Street, Dopemu-Agege, Lagos State.

It was learnt that one of the triplets, a girl, died two weeks ago, due to lack of incubator to nurture her.

The nursing mother, who is said to be in a pale condition and unable to breastfeed the babies, has been calling for help from meaningful Nigerians to come to their rescue.

The woman, who was apparently in tears, while speaking to Vanguard Newspaper, said:

“I had the triplets through normal delivery, but the babies were born prematurely. We were charged N120,000. My husband hawks fairly-used clothes (okrika). It took him time to raise N85,000, which he paid in instalments.

“I am from Owerri in Imo State, while my husband is from Abia State. We got married three years ago. Before I had these triplets, I had twins who died immediately after birth.

When I was pregnant for the triplets, I was very sick; I could not walk long distance because my belly was very big.

“I want government to help pay the balance of the hospital bills and also help us with basic necessities for the babies.

Right now I cannot work because the babies are still young.” She gave their bank account details as UBA: 2043213179 (Umeh Okore).

Hart: Difficult Work For Incoming England Manager

Featured Image

England goalkeeper, Joe Hart knows there’s a huge job awaiting the next England boss, who will be Hodgson’s replacement.

Hodgson resigned as manager, after four years at the helm. He resigned following their shock 2-1 exit at the hands of Iceland.

Hart, was responsible for the error that led to the winner against Nice. And knows Hodgson’s successor has his work cut out for him.

“Of course [it’s a tough job], following this, what we’ve been part of. It’s not an easy job anyway, the England job,” he said.

“I’m sure whoever gets the job will deserve it,” he said. “But living in the now, and trying to deal with what’s gone on – we’re going to have to deal with it as a group, players and coaches, and deal with it as best we can. And move forward.”

Hart refused to say the players had let Hodgson down, but felt the blame had to be shared.

He said: “Like I say, we win and lose as a group.
“We’ve enjoyed working under Roy. Obviously none of us wanted these to be the circumstances in which he left his job. It’s difficult.”

“Buhari should stop saying he understands how we feel” – Halima Abubakar

Featured Image

Actress, Halima Abubakar, bared her mind over how she felt about the president in a recent interview with Encomium Weekly.

The 31-year-old talked about other issues like her new age, men and reasons why she wasn’t married.

Here’s what she had to say about Buhari.

This is one of the most incredible years of my life as an adult. I have not been complaining. When I complain, then there is a problem. I really complained in the past one year. As a young chief executive officer (CEO), it has been incredibly hard. And for a young lady who has a lot of responsibilities, massive responsibilities for that matter, you will agree with me it can’t be that easy. Buhari please, make things happen for us so that other people can eat. As for me, I can eat. But then, will I say I won’t give another person food? Let’s be realistic about it. Buhari should stop saying he understands how we feel. He doesn’t understand how we feel at all. No one can understand how you feel more than yourself. There’re so many people who go home hungry, and they don’t know what they will eat the following day. But he keeps flying up and down and keeps saying he understands how we feel. The change we voted for, where is it? We need Nigeria stabilized.

And Halima went on to speak about men and marriage.

Recently, there was a post that you said you’re not interested in marriage any longer. Why did you concluded on that?
Yes, because marriage has been overrated. It’s unnecessarily over rated. It’s just too much of headache with how things are now. Even ordinary relationship is a huge burden, huge headache and heartbreaking, let alone marriage. When you can’t stand each other as boyfriend and girlfriend, how would you live together under the same roof when you get married?

People need to know themselves seriously. When I say seriously, I mean spiritually before getting married. People only know themselves physically, not spiritually, so they end up getting bored with each other. And they will say they don’t want to get divorce because of what society would say after investing so much on the marriage.

They stay in that marriage and later it may become very irritating and they start fighting. Before they know it, everything becomes violent. You hear people say all sorts of things. You’re the one who allowed people to get to you and start telling you you’re getting old. You’re the one allowing them to convince you that you’re getting old, you need to get married. Everyone will surely get old. Who won’t get old? So, when people say I am getting old, get married, I would tell them that’s the only thing they know. People carry marriage like a flag.

Does that mean Halima is really not going to get married?

No, people should only try to be nice about marriage to make me interested in it. Don’t tell me actresses don’t stay in marriage. Olu Jacobs and Joke Silva have been married for long and they’re still in the marriage. Nothing happened to their union. Omotola and her husband have been married for long; they’re still very much together. She got married at a young age which is good. What I am trying to say is that going into marriage needs a lot; you don’t just go into it. My elder sister got married at 26 and she’s doing fine in the marriage with her husband. Now, tell me why won’t I want a family like that? But these days, people are just too much into social media, that’s why marriages are crashing. Marriage these days is not based on happiness and genuine love. Let me ask, who is that poor person that has married a billionaire son? So, why won’t marriage crash when it’s not based on happiness and genuine love?

But does it mean there is no man in your life at the moment?

At this time of my life, I am no longer interested in talking about anything. If there is or there’s none, that’s my problem. It’s nobody’s business. I have done that in the past. I have invested a lot emotionally, talking about my relationship. So, I am no longer interested in talking about my relationship. I am tired of talking. Let’s rest that case. Even on my wedding day, if I decide to marry, eventually, nobody is invited.

Rooney: Next England Manager, Does Not Have To Be English

Featured Image

England captain, Wayne Rooney has stated the new manager doesn’t have to be English. But he will prefer if it was so.

Roy Hodgson resigned from his post as manager of England, following their elimination at the hands of Iceland. Under-21 manager Gareth Southgate has been rumoured to be in the offing as the next manager.

And while Rooney will prefer an English manager. He insists nationality does not really matter.

“Of course it’s better if he’s English, but he has to be the right man for the job. He has to have the credentials and the ability to be able to do the job,” Rooney said.

“Whether he’s English or not we’ll wait and see.
“He needs to put his stamp on the team, whoever he is.”

Whoever gets the nod, Rooney feels they should be excited about the prospect of leading the Three Lions.

“I know one thing – if I was the manager coming in, I’d be very excited. It’s difficult to see now, but we do have a good squad, an exciting squad,” he said.

“Whoever comes in will have a tough job, but have the players to move us on from where we are and take us one step further.

“I’ve always tried to give honest answers to the questions I’m asked and we’ve never played with any fear. We’ve never played with any fear in this tournament as we have in the past.

“We just haven’t been clinical enough [at the Euros], and it’s cost us.”
