Before The Last IDP Starves To Death In Bama – Ahmed Oluwasanjo

A few months ago, the news that our internally displaced brothers and sisters were returning back to their homes, after Nigerian troops had recaptured their towns and villages as part of territories formerly under the control of Boko Haram – the deadly terrorist group that has killed over 20,000 people and left close to two million persons displaced in North-Eastern Nigeria, came to many of us as a pleasant one.

This article was written by Ahmed Oluwasanjo. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

More touching were pictures circulating on social media of hordes of jubilant children, surrounding some soldiers and taking selfies as IDPs cheerfully return to their homes. In the words of Gimba Kakanda in a media post, “The recent images of happy ‘returnees’ posing for selfies with their liberators, the soldiers, were the most beautiful symbols out of Nigeria since 2009, the year the terrorist cult became an uncomfortable menace from a carelessly managed face-off with the security operations in Maiduguri.”

Kakanda is spot on. That picture brought many of us relief and gave us a sense of triumph over the blood sucking terrorists group – Boko Haram. Sadly, just a few months after that wonderful event, other horrid pictures and reports coming from the Bama IDPs camp, are pointing to the fact that there are legions of demons more deadly than insurgents, lurking therein.

A report published in Premium Times on June 18, “Boko Haram victims dying of starvation as Borno officials steal relief materials”, reveals that “Thousands of IDPs in over 20 camps around Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, are left hungry as officials enrich selves from the sales of diverted food meant for IDPs…” And, “The theft is not restricted to food items alone, medical drugs, toiletries, beddings and wrappers have been diverted to the market and sold by greedy officials.”

The fallout of this heinous act of some saboteurs is what Medicins Sans Frontiers (MSF), an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation, reported thus: “…In Bama new graves are appearing on a daily basis. We were told on certain days more than 30 people were dying due to hunger and illness. Since 23 May, at least 188 people have died in the camp – almost six people per day – mainly from diarrhoea and malnutrition.”

From these reports, one would have an insight into the unending agonies and miseries of IDPs, as it seems that they have escaped death in the hands of insurgents, only to be starved to death by some group of wicked official kleptocrats, cornering their provisions. It’s so sad.

For “188” deaths – mostly children – to have been recorded within a month in the Bama IDPs camp that is not under armed siege, we should be highly alarmed that the number of children dying as a result of severe malnutrition is almost six times more than the deaths recorded in Madaya, a Syrian town under siege, where local relief workers reported 32 deaths from starvation within a month, according to Reuters.

Of course, raising an alarm now cannot bring the dead IDPs back to life. However, it can prod those responsible for their welfare to swing into action to save prospective victims. Besides, if the singular death of Alan Kurdi, the three-year-old Syrian boy who drowned in the Mediterranean Sea in September 2015, could trigger international lamentation, we ought to be more worried that an average of “six children” die daily in the Bama IDPs camp, just because some blood sucking officials are helping themselves to the food and relief materials meant for IDPs.

To be candid, saboteurs who divert food and relief materials meant for IDPs have simply continued the act of terrorism from the point where Boko Haram stopped, and they must be apprehended and duly prosecuted. In addition, those who want us to believe that deaths in Bama IDPs camp are unconnected to malnourishment and starvation but to the “torture and hunger” that some of the rescued IDPs earlier suffered in the hands of their captors, would possibly need to have their heads examined. Because, if the rescued IDPs could survive the “torture and hunger” suffered in captivity, then wouldn’t it be logical for us to conclude that the hunger and malnutrition in Bama IDPs camp has been far more severe than the hunger and torture in Boko Haram’s den?

Still, before the last IDP in Bama and other IDPs camps die of hunger, it would be apt to remind the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration that while fighting insecurity and rescuing IDPs from insurgents and raising funds for their welfare are greatly charitable acts, yet the failure to tackle the wilful acts of sabotage involved in the diversion of their food and relief materials, leading to the starvation of these IDPs to death, would amount to one of the worst forms of humanitarian betrayal, and complicity in their mortalities.

President Buhari should no longer hesitate in ordering a probe into the causes of the starvation and deaths in the Bama IDPs camp to apprehend those behind the criminal diversion of the provisions meant for the extremely vulnerable. Importantly, it would be admirable if his administration could strategically set up monitoring mechanisms for investigating how IDPs camps are managed and the welfare of those undergoing some of the worst forms of vulnerability are administered, as a way of battling this most pernicious of corrupt acts against citizens he swore to protect in coming into office. A significant aspect of the success of his declared battle against corruption hinges on how much of a success his administration makes of this.

Panda or Nada: Mc Galaxy releases a Panda rendition w/ Lybra and Nedu

Just when we thought we’ve had enough of some of the noisy Panda covers; MC Galaxy decides to hit us hard with another version that ridiculously surpasses all the others we heard.

Featuring his label mate -Lybra- alongside WaZoBia Fm’s news presenter “Nedu“; 🙉.

MC Galaxy recently released a remix of the single Sekem featuring Swizz Beatz, with a total beat tweaking by Swizz. The Nek Unek crooner has already been de-famed by some internet users due to the release of some not-ear-pleasing materials.

Being a comedian that he is, Galaxy must think music is same as stand-up comedy. If that’s what he thinks, his thoughts needs recycling.

Apkan Ndah as he has titled his rendition of Panda, is just another “MC Galaxy“ tune but with a twist of unnecessary comedy skit and Calabar Language.

Man needs to find himself another path.

Buhari Issues Eid el-Fitr Message To Nigerians (Full Text)

Featured Image

I felicitate with all Nigerians, especially the Muslim Ummah, on the occasion of this year’s Eid el-Fitr, which marks the completion of the Ramadan fast.

I congratulate Muslims in Nigeria and around the world on the successful completion of this month-long spiritual journey of fasting, prayer and almsgiving in obedience to the Divine Command.

I sincerely pray that the Almighty Allah will reward our sacrifices with increased blessing and a more prosperous future.

On this happy occasion, it is my strong belief that all true followers of Islam have been rejuvenated on the true meaning and essence of life and through the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), we have learnt to imbibe the virtues of piety, sacrifice, love, self-denial and good conduct in our daily relationship with one another.

As we celebrate another Eid El Fitr, I admonish all patriotic Nigerians to uphold these lessons and also appreciate the numerous material and human blessings God has endowed us with.

Let us learn to show gratitude, respect and tolerance to one other, irrespective of our religion, tribe, language and political leanings, as we forge ahead to build on our strengths and opportunities to make Nigeria great again.

On Monday this week, the Vice President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives
and other government officials joined me to host Iftar reception at the State House with Nigerians of different backgrounds including Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), artisans and Physically-challenged persons.

Like I said during the reception, I want to once again appeal to those of us who have the means, to remember the millions of Nigerians who are suffering deprivation because of violence perpetrated by terrorists.

I am not unaware of what Nigerians are going through and I want to use this medium to commend the amazing sacrifices of Nigerians in the face of the temporary economic and social challenges and also reassure Nigerians that my administration is working assiduously towards providing basic needs and other amenities.

Let me also use this opportunity to reaffirm that we will not relent in the fight against corruption and we will ensure that all appropriate and legal measures are deplored to root out this malaise.

I commend the Armed Forces and security agencies for the gains recorded in the fight against terrorists and the rescue of hostages in the North East part of the country.

I also appeal for the support, understanding and patience of all Nigerians and our international partners as we explore the fastest means to end the economic sabotage in the Niger Delta and amicably resolve the conflicts within the region.

I promise you all better days ahead even as we remain grateful for your unflinching support to our administration.

Happy Eid El Fitr celebration and May the Almighty Allah continue to bless our nation.
Eid Mubarak!

Martino Quits As Argentina Coach

Featured Image

Gerardo Martino has resigned from his post as Argentina’s manager. With just one month left before the start of the Olympic games.

Tata had previously stated he will not quit the job following their second consecutive Copa final loss.

However, Messi’s international retirement and unrest within the Argentine Football Association and serious problems with squad selection ahead of the Games, has forced him to reconsider. As he announced his decision to quit at a meeting on Tuesday.

Martino had taken over following the 2014 World Cup, and lost just one competitive match during his time as coach, against Ecuador in a September 2015 World Cup qualifier.

In total the coach won 19 of the 29 games he directed, with seven draws and three defeats.

However, failure to win silverware for Argentina has made the former Barcelona coach a target for fans. As Argentina’s silverware drought stretches to 23 years, following three consecutive final defeats.

Abia State To Remain Without A Governor Till Thursday

Featured Image

The leadership imbroglio in Abia state over who should be granted the mantle to govern the south-east state will have to persist till on Thursday, July 7, when the Federal High Court in Abuja, will rule on the suit filed by the embattled Okezie Ikpeazu.

The court on Monday said it would rule on the application filed by Mr. Ikpeazu, whose election was annulled and certificate of return withdrawn on Thursday.

Mr. Ikpeazu had filed the stay-of-execution application days after the court sacked him from office for failing to pay his personal income tax as at when due.

Justice Okon Abang, had, in his judgment delivered on June 27, sacked Ikpeazu for allegedly disclosing false information in relation to his tax clearance details to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in his form nominating him as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2015 governorship election in the state.

The court then ordered the INEC to issue a Certificate of Return to Uche Ogah on June 30, recognising him as the governor-elect of Abia State.

In a swift reaction to the judgment, Ikpeazu filed an appeal before the Appeal Court in Abuja. He also filed a motion for stay of execution of the judgment at the Federal High Court.

While Ogah immediately headed to Abia to be sworn in as governor, the State High Court, on the spur of the moment, issued an injunction stopping the state’s chief judge or any other judicial official in the state from administering the oath of office on him, pending the determination of the motion on notice at the Court of Appeal.

“Upon this motion ex-parte pursuant to section 143 (1) & (2) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) and pending the determination of the motion on notice, after hearing O.O Nkume, counsel to the applicant,” Justice Chibuzo Ahuchaogu said.

“It is ordered that an order of injunction is hereby made restraining the 2nd defendant (INEC) from issuing a certificate of return to the 1st defendant (Ogah) while the claimant (Ikpeazu) remains in office in accordance with section 143 (1) & (2) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) and pending the determination of the motion on notice.

“It is further ordered that the 3rd defendant (chief judge of Abia State) or any other judge of the court or any judiciary officer are hereby restricted from swearing-in the 1st defendant (Ogah) while the claimant (Ikpeazu) remains in office in accordance with section 143 (1) & (2) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) and pending the determination of the motion on notice.”

Consequently, the state has remained without a clear supreme executive till perhaps on Thursday.

These Global Goals are a mighty plan to end poverty, fix climate change and address inequalities over the next 15 years, but they will only succeed if they address the needs of the most marginalised first, particularly those of girls and women. Issues like quality education, an end to violence, an end to child marriage and equal pay for equal work need to be top of every governments’ agenda in order to give the Goals the best possible start.Project Everyone, with partners from across the world, have convened the first Global Goals campaign to fight for Goals which are famous, financed and focused on girls and women. This week, on the 20th anniversary of the release of the Spice Girls’ Wannabe video, the campaign will mark twenty years of Girl Power with an updated version “#WhatIReallyReallyWant”. The film reflects the voices of girls and women all over the world telling world leaders what Goals they ‘really really want’ to be achieved to help improve their lives.
Speaking about the launch of the film, MJ Delaney, Director, said ‘This is about modern day Girl Power: The Spice Girls were about a group of different women joining together and being stronger through that bond, and these differences are what we want to celebrate in this film, while showing there are some universal things that all girls, everywhere, really really want.’

Richard Curtis, Writer, Director, Comic Relief Co-Founder & SDG Advocate

said: ‘Last year the UN, Project Everyone and many partners launched a mass awareness-raising campaign reaching 3 billion people in just 7 days with news of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This year we’re keeping up the noise and going deeper – fighting for 15 decisive years – trying to show how the Goals contain the answers to the world’s problems, from the refugee crisis to disease, humanitarian disasters to terrorism and war. And especially focusing on the incredible importance of progress in the area of girls and women – Global Goals for Global Girls.’

Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez, originally from Sri Lanka said: ‘Gender discrimination has to stop and the global community has to start putting girls first. We need to create a community where girls feel strong, safe and supported and have equal access to education, technology, health and sanitation. What I really, really want is for people to recognize the potential of girls when they are allowed to study instead of doing household chores. And what I really, really want is to end violence against women. I want women to feel powerful and beautiful. Nothing can stop us once we are given equal opportunities and are allowed to flourish in a secure, supportive environment. The world needs a dose of girl power and that’s why I’m supporting the Global Goals campaign for girls and women.’

The film will be screened in SAWA member cinemas internationally between July and September 2016, distributed globally through Unique Digital, and will form part of a social media campaign calling on people to share a picture of #WhatIReallyReallyWant for girls and women. The visual responses from around the world will be presented to world leaders at the UN General Assembly in September to encourage new political and financial commitments from governments, in support of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Following his official unveiling by Manchester United. Jose Mourinho has revealed he wants to match Sir Alex Ferguson’s record at the club.

The former Chelsea manager replaced LVG at Old Trafford. As Manchester United look to regain their status as a constant title challenger. A status they’ve not had since the exit of SAF in 2013.

SAF won 13 league crowns, five FA Cups, four League Cups, two Champions League titles and a Club World Cup during his time in charge of United and, while Mourinho has a history of spending only short spells with clubs, he says his intent to build a Ferguson-style legacy at Old Trafford.

“I am unhappy that we are not in the Champions League. Manchester United is a Champions League club, and in July 2017 instead of waiting for the play-off draw this where it has to be and that is the Champions League.”

United finished fifth in the Premier League last term, missing out on a spot in next season’s Champions League, but have already signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer, while the transfer of Henrikh Mkhitaryan is expected to be confirmed in the coming days.

“I think in football there are many jobs. The hardest to find is the one who puts the ball in the back of the net,” the 53-year-old told reporters at his first press conference as United boss.

“It is normal, at his age, for a player to change a bit but one thing that will never change is the appetite to put the ball in the net.

“He is maybe not a No.9 anymore but, for me, he will never be a No.6. He will never be 50 yards from goal. Yes, he has a great pass but I have a great pass under no pressure. He will be a No.9, a No.10, maybe a 9-and-a-half but never a No.6 or even a No.8.”

Gomes: Portugal Expected More From Ronaldo

Featured Image

Andres Gomes has stated Portugal were expecting more from captain Cristiano Ronaldo. But did not take away from his impact on the team’s performance.

The Real Madrid man turned up against Hungary, in the 3-3 draw. He scored a brace for Portugal, as they made it to the last 16.

However, his brace in the final group match is his only goal so far in the tournament. As he broke an European championships record, by scoring in his fourth Euro 2016.

“It is not the time to talk about individuals. Cristiano works for the team which is the most important thing. There are 23 players here,” Gomes said in a press conference.

“He’s scored two goals – we were probably expecting more, it is true.”

Youngster Renato Sanches was the star of the show against Poland to reach the semi-finals, but Gomes is not writing off his skiper.

“This is not the time to put pressure on a player and put him in doubt,” he explained.

“He has shown his quality and is working for the team and helping out in the Euros.”

Ronaldo and Portugal take on Wales on Wednesday in the last-four, having failed to win a single game inside 90 minutes so far in France.

Venus Williams Qualifies For Her First Wimbledon Quarterfinals Since 2010

Featured Image

Venus Williams has qualified for the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon. She has gotten this far on many occasions, it has just been a while.

The five-time Wimbledon winner will be playing at the quarterfinals for the first time since 2010. And it will be for the 12th time in her career.

”Yeah, it’s been a few years. Missed a year or two,” said Williams, who has been slowed in recent years by Sjogren’s syndrome, a condition that can cause joint pain and saps energy. ”But I’ve been here before. I’m not, like, a deer in the headlights.”

The eighth-seeded Venus Williams will take on Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan on Tuesday, a player she has never faced.

Williams reached the quarterfinals by beating Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain 7-6 (3), 6-4, while Shvedova defeated 28th-seeded Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-4.

”I’ve never played her, so we’ll see how it goes,” Williams said. ”First couple rounds were against players I’ve never played. It’s always interesting. You spend the first few games trying to figure out what’s working, what’s not working. It will definitely be that tomorrow.”

”I always want more. I want more out of myself,” Venus said. ”For sure, I haven’t had an easy road, but a lot of people haven’t. I try not to think about those sorts of things. I try to think about what I can accomplish.”
