Cost Of Corruption In Nigeria

Featured Image

It is no longer news that corruption has increased astronomically in recent years in Nigeria. A skeletal scan through the pages of several newspapers now depict cases of persons fraudulently diverting public funds, former public holders standing trials in different courts for one case of economic crime or the other. Some suspected persons are allegedly said to be returning part of the looted funds back to the coffers on the government. Assuming, this is true, I’d give kudos to the government for the laudable efforts, which is also giving a signal to the international community that it isn’t business as usual anymore.

This article was written by Adeniyi Bamgboye. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

As someone who thinks most times in monetary terms, I think returning a looted fund is not enough. What happens to the humongous interest foregone on such amount? We are no longer in the stone age where monies were buried in the ground for safe keeping. These monies would have been kept in a bank, either foreign or local. Some suspected persons may even use those funds to acquire properties and later decide to crystallize it to cash when they notice the heat is getting too much. It seems no one is talking about that aspect. This can also be likened to a businessman who borrows money from a bank but decides to pay only the principal thereby leaving the interest element unpaid. This then brings us to the issue of the cost of corruption to Nigeria as a country

The cost of corruption on the Nigerian economy is now unknowingly at a staggering height. This is because of the stance of the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration on the war against corruption. There is no tangible compensation for the social and infrastructural damage done to economy by this criminal act. Not to mention the inestimable costs such as the loss of lives due to accidents on our bad roads and poor health system delivery, just to mention a few, which funds were initially embarked to cater for. Since it would be high impracticable to ascribe a definite figure to the total cost of corruption, it is however necessary to call our consciousness to some of the cost elements involved in the fight against corruption.

An important element is law enforcement which encompasses the cost of maintaining the Nigerian police, its support staff, cost of training and development, equipment, buildings and so on. The cost of effectively operating court system which involves the judges, court reporters, clerks and other workers should also be taken into consideration. This cost may even go up as some pressure groups , opinion leaders and legal practitioners are clamouring for special courts for corruption related cases.

The world is now a global village; there is the need for more investments in technology and other sophisticated methods of tracking and investigating corrupt practices. Since no one is an island of knowledge, it is highly imperative to also increase the capacity and capability of the staffs of the enforcement agencies such as the EFCC and ICPC. They should be sent on more exchange programmes and refresher courses. This will allow and aid some forms of cross fertilisation of knowledge amongst them and their counterparts in other climes. We can’t afford to operate in isolation if we want to be ahead and apprehend corrupt persons who are constantly researching on how to get their activities unnoticed, uncovered and earthed for life.

There’s also the need to invest financial resources on the sensitization of the general public on the negative effects of corruption and how it has plagued the fortune and development for our great nation. Cost of billboard, radio and TV jingles should also be factored. In line with the Ghanaian byword, “Catch them young, and they shall be yours forever”. Monies should also be spent on recruiting school instructors who will lecture kids on why being incorruptible is desirable. The local communities shouldn’t be left behind. All these lofty initiatives will cost a huge amount of money.

Finally, I call this the incarceration cost which consists of monies to house, train, and feed, supervise and provide medical care for inmates after those charged for corruption have been successfully sentenced to jail. In as much as we want our looted funds recovered, it would be a thing of joy to see them turn a new leaf and live a life of integrity. It is of no benefit to Nigeria to see inmates die in prison due to lack of proper care.

With the pace at which the government is moving, I hope all these costs will be taken into consideration. The war against is not insurmountable, we will surely win it.

God bless Nigeria.

The Nigerian Army on Monday asserted that the militants of the notorious terror group, Boko Haram, no longer owns any camp in the Northern part of the country.

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, made the assertion while addressing newsmen at the inauguration of Strategic Communication Course for senior officers at the Nigerian Army School of Public Relations and Information (NASPRI), Bonny Camp in Lagos.

His words: “The situation in the North-East has tremendously improved. The military operations or the fight against terrorism and insurgency in the North-East is hinged on three things.

First, defeating the Boko Haram terrorists which have been accomplished and making room to facilitate humanitarian assistance which is also ongoing.

Then restoration of law and order for good governance to take place.

We no longer have camps of Boko Haram terrorists and we no longer have them conveyed in the territories,’’ he said.

Those that were hitherto close are now open to the extent that we have trans-border trade.

Take for instance; just recently, the important road that links Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon was just re-opened.

We have come to the point that we can beat our chest and decisively say we have dealt with Boko Haram.”

On the inauguration of the communication course, Usman said that training of personnel was paramount, adding that it would enhance proficiency.

“It is in this regard that the Directorate of Army Public Relations places high premium on training of officers and soldiers.

The Nigerian Army School of Public Relations and Information must remain focused in the training of officers and soldiers to meet the need of well trained and skilled manpower.

This is the first of its kind to further enhance further joint operations of the armed forces and possibly international military engagement.

It is my hope that this course will make the desired impact on all of you and explicit growth fertilisation of ideas among the participants.

It is also our desire to see that at the end of the course, we turn out better informed senior officers.

Also, they should be well-equipped to partake in making or taking strategic decision for the Nigerian army information and dissemination management,” he added.

The Army spokesperson also commended the effort of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai for improving the Nigerian Army formations.

PSG Are Tougher Under Emery, Says Lucas Moura

Featured Image

According to Lucas Moura, PSG are a tougher team under Unai Emery. And they’re better at winning back possession.

Emery replaced Blanc at the club, after guiding Sevilla to a third consecutive Europa league trophy.

And Lucas feels they could benefit from a tougher approach and working harder without the ball in the coming campaign – qualities he suggests they lacked under Blanc.

“I think that we’ve started to do things that the new coach asks of us,” he was quoted as saying by L’Equipe . “Our team is a bit different this season. We’re a bit tougher.

“We played a good match, I’m happy.

“Everyone wants to see a good PSG this season. We’re working hard tactically and positionally. It’s very intense. You saw that against Inter.

“As soon as we lose the ball, we try to get it back as soon as possible. That wasn’t the case before, and it was a problem.”

Steve Bruce Explains Why He Left Hull City

Steve Bruce Explains Why He Left Hull City – Former Hull City manager Steve Bruce has revealed he resigned for the club’s sake.

Bruce, who led the team back to the Premier League after a one year absence, wrote a letter to the club’s fans explaining his decision.

“It was with a heavy heart that I ended my time as Hull City manager on Friday. The four years I spent at the club were among the happiest times of my managerial career.”

“The first promotion out of the Championship, survival in the Premier League and then the FA Cup final and European football were all fantastic times for me, my staff and my players. The relegation back to the Championship was hard to take but we all stuck together to win promotion through the play-off final at Wembley in May.”

“My biggest regret is having to walk away but it was a decision I had to make for the sake of the club. The last 12 months have been very tough and it felt like the right step for the club to move forward in a different direction and with someone else in charge.”

“I desperately wanted to make it work this summer and be a Premier League manager again but, sadly, it wasn’t to be.”

Sam Allardyce Might Drop Rooney As England Captain

Featured Image

Sam Allardyce Might Drop Rooney As England Captain – New England manager Sam Allardyce has revealed that he will wait a bit before naming his team captain.

Wayne Rooney has been the team’s captain since the 2014 World Cup succeeding Steven Gerrard, but Allardyce is not sure yet if he will keep him on.

That is far too early to make any predictions or decisions and I’m going to leave that until I meet all the players and get coaching staff behind the scenes,” Allardyce said about making a decision on Rooney’s captaincy. “It is the first day getting my feet under the table and meeting everyone.”

“I think that from my point of view what hit me the most was the overwhelming support from all areas over the last few days, the goodwill messages I have had not only from friends in and outside the game but the nation as a whole.

“That gives me a very warm feeling about taking this position and I am very proud to be named England manager. I look forward to the task in hand, qualifying for the World Cup and moving on from there.”

Allardyce also announced he was signing on his former Bolton Wanderers assistant, Sammy Lee onto his team.

“Sammy is joining me for the second time which is pleasing because we had a great time at Bolton and I’m going to rely on his international experience,” he said.

“It’s ironic that less than 12 months ago I was sat in Spain thinking what’s the next venture and luckily for me I got fed up quickly because football is everything to me and I couldn’t leave it alone. I have to thank everybody at Sunderland for the opportunity. The success of saving the football club put me in the public eye for this position and I had a really good time at Sunderland, the fans were magnificent for me and I thank them all for that.

“Hopefully the England fans will enjoy my time with them as much as the Sunderland fans.”

Inter Will Not Sell Icardi For Any Price

Featured Image

Inter Milan has signed a note of warning to anyone looking to sign Mauro Icardi. Piero Auselio says he will not be sold for any price.

The Argentine attacker was rumoured to be on the verge of leaving Inter. However, it seems that is not the case, as the Serie A club will not be selling him.

Napoli’s interest comes amid Gonzalo Higuain’s seemingly imminent move to Juventus, but Inter director Ausilio has warned Icardi will not be his replacement at San Paolo.

“Icardi will remain at Inter, our position is very clear,” he told Fcinternews.it. “It’s not a question of money, it doesn’t matter what Napoli can offer us.

“Our plan this summer is to reinforce Inter and to do that we’re keeping hold of Icardi and our best players regardless of the figures offered. Icardi does not have a release clause and we do not want to sell; simple.

“There’s no problem between us and Icardi, he’s working very hard. He has been with us for years and become captain of a team with a glorious past. We have always been attentive to his needs and always renewed his deal at the right time.

“Many people are forgetting that we have already signed three players [Caner Erkin, Ever Banega and Cristian Ansaldi] of international pedigree and will do more still.”

Vice-president Javier Zanetti echoed Ausilio’s sentiments and stressed the importance of Icardi remaining focused on helping Inter.

“Icardi is very young and has great potential. He must keep thinking about playing, nothing more,” he said.

“The intention is for him to stay with us. We renewed last year, adjusting the contract and giving him the captain’s armband.”

Is His Career On Fire? Zambia Cancels Koffi Olomide’s Concert

Featured Image

Koffi Olomide might have just landed himself and his career in trouble after his concert in Zambia got cancelled due to his physical assault case in Kenya, Friday (July, 22).

The organizers of the Zambia event  through the office of the The Agriculture and Commercial society of Zambia said its decision to pull Olomide out of the concert stemmed from the “disappointing” incident where a video recording captured the singer kicking  one of his dancers identified as Pamela.

Kenyan Youth and Gender Minister Sicily Kariuki had called for the singer’s deportation.

Kariuki said, “His conduct was an insult to Kenyans and our constitution. Violence against women and girls cannot be accepted in any shape, form or manner.”

Koffi Olomide

Koffi Olomide deported from Kenya

Following a public outcry after the video went viral, the 60-year-old performer was deported from Kenya to DRC’s capital, Kinshasa, on Saturday along with his dancers and members of his team.

In an unexpected turn of events, the dancer who was caught getting attacked on camera said Olomide did not attack her. Rather, he was defending her from another woman.

She said, “Dear fans of Koffi Olomide, I would like to tell you that Koffi did not attack me, it was a girl at the airport that was threatening me and Koffi came to defend me. Koffi can never beat us in public, and we all know that Koffi loves his dancers and he can never do something like that.”

Read: Dancer Beaten By Koffi Olomide Says He Did Not Attack Her

Watch Koffi Olomide’s assault

Koffi Olomide’s case would have been manageable if he didn’t have a violent streak.

In 2008, Koffi was accused of being violent with a cameraman from DR Congo’s private RTGA television station whom he kicked and broke his camera at a concert in the capital, Kinshasa, following disagreement over recording rights.

He also faced charges in 2012 for assaulting his producer and received a three-month suspended prison sentence in Democratic Republic of Congo.

Maybe the continent will find a place in her heart to forgive him because if every country should pull out of his concerts, he might as well just retire.

We hope it doesn’t get to that.

Koulibaly Wanted By Chelsea And Everton, Says Agent

Featured Image

Kalidou Koulibaly is being sought after by two different clubs. His agent says, Chelsea and Everton are looking at the defender.

Rumours have it that the Napoli defender is keen on leaving the club. And Wenger refused to meet the asking price, after he was offered by Napoli for £37.6 million.

Everton and Chelsea have been tracking Koulibaly during the summer transfer window and the Senegal international’s agent, Bruno Satin, has confirmed the player is likely to move to the Premier League.

“I was in Dimaro on Saturday and we discussed a contract renewal,” Satin told Radio CRC. “However, we are not at the point of reaching an agreement. The desire of the player is to leave the club, not renew.

“We are told by the club that he is a great player but from the renewal on offer, we don’t see this.
“Last year they wanted to sell him, stating he was not focused enough, but then last season he has shown all his quality.

“To the fans I say stay calm because he won’t be joining Juventus. Chelsea and Everton are still interested as they are both searching for a central defender of his quality.”

Aubameyang: Only Real Madrid Can Make Me Leave BVB

Featured Image

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has stated that his main goal is to play for Real Madrid. And that only the La Liga giants can make him leave Dortmund.

Aubameyang had earlier stated in an interview, he promised his grandfather he’ll play for Real Madrid.

The Gabon international scored 39 goals for Dortmund last season. And has attracted interest from Atletico Madrid and Manchester City.

But Aubameyang has reiterated that only Zinedine Zidane’s side could tempt him away from Signal Iduna Park.

“This year, no,” he told ZDF when asked about a possible move.

“But the only club I would leave Dortmund for are Real Madrid. If they don’t come calling, I don’t leave.

“My grandfather, the dad of my mum, always wished that I would play in Spain. Two years ago, when he died, I promised him that someday I will play for Real – and I work hard to reach that goal.

“Real Madrid is my main goal but at the moment I like it in Dortmund. If there is a chance to go to Madrid, I will immediately say yes – but at the moment there is no contact.”

Aubameyang, who was on target in the 4-1 win over Manchester United in the International Champions Cup on Friday, has been joined at Dortmund by rising French star Ousmane Dembele.

And head coach Thomas Tuchel believes the 27-year-old could be the perfect mentor for the former Rennes teenager.

Tuchel said: “Because of his perfect French, Auba is the perfect integrative figure for Ousmane Dembele.

“I think that Auba is adult enough to play a role like this.”

No Barcelona Contract For Luciano Vietto

Featured Image

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has scotched suggestions Barcelona are about to seal a €22m deal for striker Luciano Vietto.

Recent reports in Spain have suggested that Barca are on the verge of snapping up Vietto, who joined Atletico Madrid from Villarreal last summer. Sevilla have also been linked with the Argentinian too. Atleti president Cerezo has discussed the youngster’s situation and says he wants the player to stay at the Vicente Calderon, although hinted that the hitman could leave.

“Luciano Vietto is an Atletico player and right now we have not decided anything, nor have we received an offer from Barcelona,” he is quoted as saying in Marca. “It is not logical to say that he will go to Barcelona, because we have not had contact with them.

“I am one of those who thinks that players have to be at the club where they are wanted. Neither is Vietto going to Sevilla on loan. We want him to stay, but also we have to say how things develop. He is a fantastic player, with enormous potential. I want to stay here this year, I feel loved by the fans who want the best for me, and the best is yet to come.

“I hope to be allowed to start afresh- I’d like to push on, to continue improving. After being at Real for five years, I want to make the next step.”
