17 Passengers Die As Bus Collides With Fuel Tanker In Borno

Featured Image

At least seventeen passengers were feared dead in an auto crash along Maiduguri-Damaturu highway after an 18-seater bus collided with a fuel tanker on Friday.

A source who witnessed the incident, said the bus, which was conveying mostly young persons, suddenly swerved off its lane and landed in front of an oncoming fuel tanker.

The eyewitness, Ngari Modu, said:

“The bus was going on high speed when it suddenly skid off its lane and ran headlong towards an oncoming fuel tanker which”.

“The tanker ran over the bus which immediately caused the two vehicles to catch fire. Seventeen out of the 18 persons in the bus burned to death, while only one person managed to come out alive.”

Following the unfortunate road mishap, a huge gridlock emerged on the highway as security personnel tried to secure the area after the fire from the fuel tanker continued to burn for hours.

Attempts to get the sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, S.U Ilyasu, for comments, proved abortive.

Henderson: We Gave Our All In Barcelona Thumping

Featured Image

Jordan Henderson has praised Liverpool’s display of dominance over Barcelona, as they beat the Spanish giants 4-0.

Liverpool were doing the right things against a sub par Barcelona, emerging deserved winners at Wembley.

And captain Henderson was full of praise for his side, taking numerous positives from such an emphatic victory.

“It was a big performance, a very big performance,” he told Sky Sports.

“We were arguably playing against the best team in the world and the best players in the world, so it was a big test for us.

“I thought the performance was very good.

“Each and every one of us worked our socks off, gave everything for each other and we got our rewards in the end with the goals.”

The England international reserved special praise for man-of-the-match Sadio Mane, a new arrival from Southampton, who opened the scoring.

“He’s been brilliant,” Henderson added. “He’s come in, as you’ve seen him, in the pre-season games and he’s sharp.

“He wants to go in behind, he wants it to feet, his finishing is very good as well.

“He’s a fantastic addition to the squad, as are the other players the manager’s brought in. We’ve got a healthy-looking squad going into the season.”

He added: “I don’t want to over-estimate this game, but it’s still good for us. We didn’t think that we were lower than Barcelona before the game and we don’t think that we’re higher than them after the game.”

#ProjectFame9.0 Academy Day 12: Of Joint Classes And Humour

Featured Image

Day 12 of #ProjectFame9.0 saw preparation for the weekend’s performances at fever pitch as members of the faculty and the contestants gave their all to ensure that their acts were near perfect.

The duo of Okiemute and Pere each had a heart-to-heart session with the academy principal, in which both of them individually talked about their worries, challenges and fears with her. She listened attentively and proffered solutions which the both of them were glad to adopt.

One thing all the contestants seem to have learnt is that each of the faculty members brings a different aura and approach to the way they impact knowledge through their teachings in the academy.

This is especially true for Ms. Ige and Uncle Ben, whose individual classes differ due to their personalities and teaching methods. Academy Day 12 of #ProjectFame9.0 was an unusual class however as the contestants got an unexpected combined class of the voice coach and the music director.

The day’s activities had commenced with Ms. Ige, who took the contestants through a mild vocal training exercise that entailed them switching between different notes and exercising their vocal chords. In between the class, Uncle Ben made an unexpected appearance which seemed to make some of the contestants apprehensive.

The fear the contestants have for Uncle Ben was aptly captured by Elizabeth who said “Ms. Ige is calm, and she sometimes pampers us, but even though Uncle Ben is not harsh, he is fierce and will push a contestant till he gets the best out of them.” Uncle Ben showed his fierce side just as Elizabeth had predicted but Ms. Ige was able to help calm the class with intermittent humour.

Despite the fear and apprehension that Uncle Ben brought into Ms. Ige’s class, the class was an interesting one that was filled with serious practical activities, fun and humour for both the faculty members and the contestants.

Hummels Expecting To Be Booed At Dortmund

Featured Image

Mats Hummels is not expecting to be welcome at Dortmund when Bayern play them in the DFL Supercup next week.

The defender returned to Bayern Munich after eight seasons at Dortmund, where he won two bundesliga titles.

And Hummels accepts he will be a target at his former home when Dortmund and Bayern contest the first piece of silverware on offer this season.

“The boos from the Dortmund fans will come but it won’t change my appreciation [of them and the club],” he told reporters on Saturday. “The game will be very special for me.

“The decision to move took a lot of strength and it gave me a headache for several weeks – it was a long and difficult process.

“Dortmund and Bayern are the only clubs I’ve played for but Bayern are one of the best three teams in the world and have the chance to win everything every year. In the end, that was the decisive factor.”

Bundesliga champions Bayern reportedly paid in excess of €35 million to sign Hummels, but the man himself feels that is merely a sign of the times.

He added: “Of course, the amounts are very high but when there is so much money floating round, it is understandable that there is this kind of transfer fee. For good players you just have to give more.”

Ranieri: Leicester Will Not Be Like Chelsea

Featured Image

Leicester City manager, Claudio Ranieri is insisting his men will not collapse like Chelsea did, following their EPL win.

The blues won the EPL in the 2014-15 season, but an underwhelming 2015/16 season, saw them finish 10th on the table. Chelsea recorded only 12 wins out of 38 games in the league, with Jose Mourinho getting sacked.

Despite their fairytale triumph last season, Leicester has once again been written off, but Ranieri insists they’ll turn up.

“When I build something, it is never destroyed,” the 64-year-old told reporters ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield against Manchester United at Wembley.

“My philosophy is to watch your house, not other houses. It’s important what happens here. My house is very clean and very clear.

“Slowly, we try to build the first floor and the second floor. The foundation is very solid.

“I don’t know what happened [to Chelsea]. They were the champions.

“I spoke with my players and I said: ‘I know you very well now and I want more. Forget what we achieved, I want more.’

“I am very curious what we can do now. One of my strengths is always to have the right balance, never give up. I always believe in myself and, if one man wants to do something, in the end he will achieve something.”

We’ll Kill Muslims, Burn Mosques, If Boko Haram Continues Killing Christians – Militant Group

A resurgent militant group, the Niger Delta Revolutionary Crusaders (NDRC), has threatened to carry out reprisal attacks on Muslims and mosques within the region, if terror group, Boko Haram, continues to kill Christians and burn down churches in the north, as threatened by its new leader, Abu Masab el Barnaw, on Wednesday.

A statement issued on Saturday by the spokesman for NDRC, W O I Izon-Ebi, which was obtained by Vanguard Newspaper read:

“We want to alert Nigerians and the world that the Islamization plot has been proven by the Boko Haram new leader Abu Masab el Barnaw that their new mission is to kill all Christians and burn down all churches.”

“But, we want to warn them that we, the Niger Delta youths, in this 21st century will not accept killing of innocent Christians or burning of churches. That if they try it in the north or any part of Nigeria, we the Niger Delta youths will not see any Muslim or mosque in the Niger Delta.”

“We are not against President Buhari granting the Boko Haram amnesty if their sole purpose is to own an Islamic caliphate in the north, but they should not shift it to the Niger Delta.”

“All we know and want is resource control and true federalism, if truly they believe in one Nigeria, and are working harder to build a prosperous One Nigeria, let them shift their Operation Crocodile Tears to the Fulani herdsmen and the Boko Haram that is threatening the unity and peace of Nigeria.”

Agenda For ‘Born Again’ JAMB And TETFUND

Agenda For ‘Born Again’ JAMB And TETFUND – Tunde Musibau Akanni

Finally, the Buhari administration seems set to pay what appears a reasonable attention to the education sector in the country with the recent appointment of new heads for no fewer than 17 agencies in the sector. This is one sector in which everyone, directly or indirectly, is a stakeholder. Even at the president’s age when all seems to be over with formal education, he’s still basking in the euphoria of the graduation of a few of his children. Yet, the grand children must be engrossed with education at different levels. And luckily (?) for Nigerians, the vice-president is a professor.

This article was written by Tunde Musibau Akanni. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

It is therefore believed that the professor vice-president will not want to be indifferent to solving some of the problems he has had to be concerned with before his foray into politics. If need be, Professor Osinbajo needs be told that his colleagues in the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) still have a long list of wishes which may not require so much of special efforts to resolve by his government. Sheer sincerity of purpose will do.

Most visible in the news today is the reality that the administrators of the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) have exhausted whatever was left of their creativity. I recall with nostalgia that this same board had been so efficient in the past that it even made us believe in the post office system in the country. At a time JAMB didn’t have an examination centre in my community, I wrote its examination way back in the early 1980s having to travel more than 20 kilometres. The scores were eventually released to different universities including my own first choice, the University of Ilorin. There was no unpleasant story. The local mail man, as he had done with several ordinary mails in the past, strolled to our family house one morning to deliver my admission letter. Thus began the process of my studentship at the nation’s “better by far university” where the newly appointed registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ish’aq Oloyede, was my ‘senior’. My university is one of the few in the world today which sticks to a set of traditional dates for its most important traditional ceremonies, ranging from convocation to matriculation and so on.

READ ALSO: Buhari Sacks JAMB Registrar

The anecdotal bit here isn’t a sheer tale. As a university teacher that I am today and one that has also had the uncommon advantage of undertaking academic programmes in some high performing institutions with highly rated scholarship and fellowship awards, one cannot but feel for today’s children in schools. What exactly are they made to get excited with? A couple of weeks back, a 300-level student of mine had excused herself from one of the classes I teach so she could go and process her admission letter which was yet to be released by JAMB! Perhaps she doesn’t even have much reason to blame JAMB having been admitted, some would want to placate her.

It is particularly most disturbing that the hope of several ambitious children of this digital generation of a world with no boundaries again, has been shattered by JAMB because some officials simply elected to be unduly callous and unpardonably out of tune with the trend in the sector. How do we explain the deployment of slow and low performing computers for fate deciding tests like Universities Matriculation Examinations that JAMB conducts? The unpalatable consequence of this is that some unlucky candidates who are assigned such systems end up with scores below their real capability. Anyone who reads the interviews often conducted for first class graduates of some of our universities would readily recall that some of these students have had to write this examination more than once perhaps not because they didn’t deserve to pass at the first sitting.

Added to the challenge of infrastructure now is the rather absurd confusion which JAMB is currently exhibiting with regards to deciding the parameters of candidates’ admission. What has happened to the findings of studies conducted on these by our colleagues in the realm of test and measurement? What has happened to the easier option of consultation with relevant experts who may have conducted such studies in the first place? What is the trend in other parts of the world? The nation cannot continue to agonise over the cluelessness of the past government, especially in a sector that determines the present and future rating of the nationals and also in comparison with the nationals of other countries of the world. Time waits for no one.

It’s commendable enough that the Buhari administration announced that its crash employment programme for 500,000 graduates includes the most indispensable tool of this age of technoliteracy. Without further delay, it should, for now, initiate a strong collaboration with computer manufacturers for the setting up of computer laboratories for tertiary institutions. This idea should serve the purposes of examination centres for JAMB candidates and even assorted recruitment and promotional examinations through which it could attract at least maintenance revenues. It will as well function as training centres for relevant courses in the same institutions. Computers still constitute scarce facilities in our tertiary institutions!

Having been celebrated by his contemporaries nationally, continentally and globally, Prof. Oloyede surely knows what to do with the human factor in JAMB being a most incorruptible academic and administrator of a most admirable standing, I dare say.

Not the least needed is the radical strategy to deal with the so called special centres for JAMB examinations. How did we get here? A JAMB that will surrender its sovereignty to “private ownership” does not deserve taxpayers’ support. It is shameful enough that the degeneracy that has befallen our public education system has given rise to unwieldy outside-of-school interventions to restore the hope of our ambitious youngsters. To continue to sustain the extension of the conduct of JAMB examinations to private arena will be most indecent and unprofessional. Oloyede’s profile which smacks of distinguished patriotism certainly has raised the hope of many of us who have invested in the Nigerian state project as students’ union activists and graduated into development enthusiasts and lately scholars.

For the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), its been comparable to what the renowned playwright, Ola Rotimi, calls “one slender body of joy”. A great measure of lethargy and territorialism injected into it. It, indeed today, functions as if it isn’t the outcome of the rigorous vision of members of the community it has been established to serve. Be it known by the world that it is one of the many recommendations following the research efforts of some of our fine scholars to relieve the sector of some burdens.

READ ALSO: JAMB Withdraws Candidates’ 2016 Admission List Sent To Nigerian Institutions

Today, a casual tour of a number of our academic institutions readily reveals conspicuous interventions of this fund. One cannot imagine what the state of the nation’s tertiary institutions could be without the support of this Fund. The Fund has indeed done well to also advance out invaluable support to institutions for personnel development. Some otherwise disoriented scholars have been purged of hopelessness. It is particularly commendable that under Prof. Yakubu, the Fund published a list of some institutions that failed to retire some funds that they had collected. It is however not certain if the Fund still does this.

An establishment like TETFUND with monumental resources has the capacity to accelerate Nigeria’s return to glory as envisioned by President Buhari and shared by a number of patriots. It is quite interesting that the accolade the University of Ilorin attracts to itself today also derives partly from TETFUND’s support. It will therefore not be out of place for TETFUND to learn from the tradition of high performers like the Universities of Ibadan and Ilorin, both of which ensure that certain dates are sacrosanct. For instance, it is well known across all institutions that collaborate with TETFUND that there are deadlines for the submission of applications for conference grants to lecturers. On the other hand however, TETFUND does not seem to have control over specific dates when such grants may be released to the potential beneficiaries. The potential beneficiaries are made to wait pitiably without explanation. This becomes increasingly surprising in an age in which computerisation has substantially demystified precision. TETFUND, the new head, Abdullahi Bichi Baffa, should realise, has competitors in local and international grant making organisations from which their supposed beneficiaries also benefit without having to genuflect to suggest corruption. Indeed, hoping the new head has experienced it, the various philanthropic organisations in town relate with their beneficiaries as partners and collaborators.

READ ALSO: JAMB 2016 Admissions: Post-UTME Twist And The Point System Drama

The practice of whimsically cancelling programmes for which applications are sought by the Fund is also most discourteous. It is unimaginable that TETFUND will solicit applications in form of proposals from university lecturers, get professors to assess same only to summarily announce that it would no longer be in a position to support such without any apology to the professors who assessed the proposals nor the ‘perceived’ beggars who had sweated it out to submit the proposals.

Development work has zero tolerance for asymmetrical relationship between partners. It is imperative to register one fact with TETFUND managers here. TETFUND grants are not spectacularly outstanding. Grants given by other charities for the same purposes are often fatter. They also need to check out the fact that the same brilliant minds they do not deem as deserving courtesy are most specially treasured by several other development and donor agencies. I recall with pride how, for a particular contract, DFID realising I was a university teacher gave me the courtesy of the freedom to budget the specific measure of time I could spare for them as a consultant yet with a fantastic reward.

Whatever level of transparency TETFUND currently lays claim to can also be improved upon in the spirit of the change mantra of the Buhari administration. For instance, it would not be out of place to publish its annual report and accounts in details. One can imagine if TETFUND will not be answerable to its partners, how does it get to reckon with their input in conceptualising plans? Again, all credible grant makers publish annual reports and accounts, so this peculiarity of half measure approach to transparency by TETFUND is better revised as soon as possible.

For JAMB and TETFUND, tertiary education in Nigeria is a common denominator from which a lot is expected. Will they measure up this time with new heads to captain their ships?

ICYMI: Westbrook Glad To Extend Stay With Thunder

Featured Image

Russell Westbrook has signed a contract extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder, signing a three year deal.

The details of the contract has not been disclosed, but sources have it as a three year deal worth $85.7 million.

The deal includes a player option that would allow Westbrook to still become a free agent after the 2017-18 season.

“There’s nowhere else I would rather be than Oklahoma City,” Westbrook said at a news conference to announce the deal. “You guys have basically raised me. I’ve been here since I was 18, 19 years old. You guys did nothing but great things for me. Through the good and the bad, you guys supported me through it all, and I appreciate it. Definitely when I had the opportunity to be able to be loyal to you guys, that’s the No. 1 option. Loyalty is something that I stand by.”

Asked why he agreed to the extension now rather than wait until next season, Westbrook was emphatic: “There’s no need to wait if you know where you want to be.”

Talks between the sides centered around the addition of two more years to Westbrook’s current deal, which expires after the 2016-17 season. The new deal calls for Westbrook’s salary to jump from $17.8 million next season to the maximum $26.5 million. He would then earn the max the next two seasons if he exercises the third-year option.

The player option for the third season of the deal will allow Westbrook to capitalize on the league rule allowing players who have completed 10 seasons to earn a larger max salary.

Markovic’s Future At Anfield Undecided

Featured Image

Klopp insists Lazar Markovic could still feature in Liverpool’s future plans, saying he still has time to prove his worth to the club.

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan with Fenerbache, but a hamstring injury hampered his time at the club.

The Serbian winger was expected to be sold this summer, but, Klopp insists no decision has been made yet.

“Everyone knows that Lazar is a very quick player but he was not at 100 per cent [in pre-season training] and there was some doubt as to how it would be,” said the German manager.

“Since then he became better and better and he is in much better shape.

“He’s a good boy and works hard. At the end we will have to see how we will build our squad.

“We have time until August 31 or maybe something will happen earlier, or something will happen on the 31st or something will never happen.

“There is no final decision in this moment. We need all these players for the games and our training sessions and he is part of it.”

Klopp: England Players Over Euros Fluke

Featured Image

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp is insisting the England stars in his squad are over their flop in the Euro 2016.

ICYMI: Milner Retires From International Football

Jordan Henderson, Nathaniel Clyne, Daniel Sturridge, James Milner and Adam Lallana, were involved in the Euro 2016 for England. The three lions did not make it past the round of 16.

However, Klopp did not have to motivate his players or boost their morale, as they reported fresh to training.

“They had three weeks’ holiday and they came back pretty well recovered,” the Liverpool boss said.

“Of course we spoke about the European Championship but I told them my view. When we spoke in general about English football in this tournament I thought it was really good.

“Until England left the tournament they didn’t play worse than Portugal, for example, but they didn’t have the time for development Portugal had.

“So it was not that I had to give them back the optimism. They came back [after] three weeks, it’s how national players have to do it, and it was not that disappointing.”

Liverpool play Barcelona on Saturday in their final pre-season friendly, before they get their campaign underway away against Arsenal on August 14.

‘We Lack The Power To End Bachelor’s Degree, HND Dichotomy’

Featured Image

The federal government of Nigeria has denied insinuations making the round that it had unified the Bachelor’s Degree and Higher National Diploma (HND) awarded by Universities and Polytechnics in the country.

Speaking on behalf of the government on Friday, the spokesman for the Ministry of Education, Benjamin Goong, denied recent reports that the dichotomy between Bachelors and HNDs had been abolished, saying HND holders must meet new requirements to attain the Bachelors level.

READ ALSO:JAMB 2016 Admissions: Post-UTME Twist And The Point System Drama

Goong averred that the ministry lacked the power to end the inequality but he said the government had taken steps to bridge the gap to ensure HND holders are treated fairly when seeking for jobs.

His words: “Two weeks ago, the ministry sent a memo to the National Council of Establishments (NCE) to institute a bridging program for the HND holders and the proposal was approved.

“The bridging program is for HND holders who can either attend the National Teachers Institute (NTI) or any institution offering post-graduate diploma programs, before they can attain the level graduates can attain in the public sector.

“As per the approved memo, after the bridging program, HND holders will now be offered jobs from grade level 8 and finish at grade level 17 like graduates. Before now, HND holders were only allowed grade level 7 and finish at grade level 14.

“That is as far as it goes for now regarding the B.Sc and HND dichotomy. Both are still very different from each other.”

Charly Boy Tells Pastor Adeboye To Write His Own Bible For His Congregation

Popular socialite Charly Boy has responded to comments made by Pastor E.A. Adeboye regarding marriage.

Speaking to his congregation, Adeboye had told the man not to marry women who couldn’t cook or pray for an hour, and told women not to marry a man who didn’t a job.

In response, Charly Boy wrote: “For the past few days, Pastor Adeboye’s advice to youths on marriage has been trending all over the place. The “good pastor” yarns tell me that he is a man suspended in time, between old and new school.

“Don’t get it twisted; in as much as I flow with his definition of a good woman, from his statement I see that the obvious way to his heart is through his stomach and of cause through prayers. Good, No wahala!

“However our amiable Pastor rubs it in when he starts to yarn Akpata, “Marry a warrior, if a girl cannot pray for one hour, don’t marry her. Don’t marry a girl who is lazy, who cannot cook. She needs to know how to do chores and cook because you cannot afford to eat out at all times” Hmmm na wa! Really? Seriously?

“So if my wife to be can’t rant, chant, shout and generally carry on as a prayer warrior, praying for a whole hour, the woman doesn’t deserve a wife status. Abi?

“Oga Pastor, that one na missyarn. Over praying does not make one a better husband or wife, because the world especially Naija is filled with fake people and “fakest” pastors.

“Does a man having a job guarantee that he will make a good husband? Does a woman knowing how to cook guarantee she will make a good wife? Haba.

“Ok I get it, the Nigerian god has an ear infection, so we must shout and pray for hours because that’s the only way he may listen to our prayers, right? I know that a man is supposed to marry a helper and not a cook or a house girl.

“By the way, is anything wrong with encouraging your young male congregation to learn how to cook and do chores too?

““Do not marry a worldly lady” what the heck does that mean? Is it about being materialistic or just being fashionable, looking nice. I guess in your book we can’t be good Christians if we got swag and we are trendy. Judge, not pastor.

“We must all not look like Deeper Life people to have a personal relationship with God. By the way, if you want to start writing your own commandment you may as well write your own version of the bible for your congregation. Na una way.

“Being married should never define a man or a woman. Marriage in a few years anyways, will be out of fashion. Being married is only nice if we are lucky to pick a partner who will be our friend, if not, that may be hell on earth.

“All of us must not get married if our threshold for nonsense and garbage is low. The world is obviously changing and we are no longer in the 60s. Who wants to be suffering and smiling? Most importantly marriage should not be a milestone for anyone. Yes o.

“Like I always say, it will take two to tango. Marriage only works when partners are determined to make it work. It can never be a merit badge, or a status for happiness. Many of us are enslaved in our myopic mindset that makes a mess out of what should really be a good friendship. So Oga Pastor Adeboye, watch your yarns because a lot of people look up to you, Biko. I don talk my own.”
