Confirming the recovery, the Chairman National Maritime Union, Bayelsa State Chapter, Lloyd Sese, disclosed that the tragic boat accident – that claimed the lives of four soldiers in Brass Local Government area – was due to poor logistics and use of low powered engine boats to convoy military personnel.

According to him, preliminary investigation conducted by the Brass Unit of the Maritime Union showed that the accident could have been avoided if adequate logistics were arranged with high capacity engine boats used.

He stated that “they used small boats with low capacity engines.”

He called on the military authorities to consult the Maritime Union for logistics and transport during such movements.

He said: “we call on the military to consult those involved in the day to day commercial activities along the creeks and the waterways.”

Earlier, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, Acting Director Army Public Relations, confirmed the boat mishap saying “we have not been able to ascertain the number of soldiers who may have lost their lives. It is quite a tragic incident.”

It was learnt that all the weapons in possession of the troops at the time of the accident, including service rifles belonging to the soldiers, were also said to be missing.

Man Who Named Dog ‘Buhari’, Names Daughter ‘Aisha’

Featured Image

The man who was arrested for naming his dog Buhari, Mr Joachim Iroko Chinakwe has now named his daughter Aisha presumably after the president’s wife.

Mr Chinakwe was arrested last month by the police after being reported by his Northern neighbor. His neighbor was offended by the name given to his dog but was eventually released on bail.

Owner of ‘Buhari’ dog names daughter Aisha

The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone II, Abdulmajid Ali had in a statement said the arrest was done to prevent a likely breach of public peace. Mr Chinakwe did reveal that he had two other dogs named Obama and Joe. He also revealed that President Buhari was his role model.

This particular name however should be viewed as less offensive. This is because it is given to a human and not an animal. The name was reported by human rights activist and lawyer, Mr Inibehe Effiong via twitter.

All Is Fair In Love, War, And The Nigerian Way Of Life

All Is Fair In Love, War, and the Nigerian Way of Life, By Uddin Ifeanyi

When, recently, the Emir of Kano weighed in on the parlous state of the domestic economy, the obstreperousness of the response to his contribution threatened to drown out the pith of his message. Still, step back a wee bit from the new tribal structures that have emerged around the competence (or lack thereof) of the incumbent federal government, and many of the sub-themes in the emir’s message invite a second look.

This piece was written by Ifeanyi Uddin. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

That our elite is largely rentier in its nature and composition is a well-known fact. Very few really affluent Nigerians (in the country) are invested in the economy in any sense. Most simply leverage their crippling hold on the institutions of the state to create huge profits for themselves without returning any value to society. The coterie that pretends to enterprise, on the other hand, is the willing beneficiary of government cosseting at levels that burden all whom of necessity must access their services, or consume their products.

Within this context, the emir only underlined the new means of access to unearned income in the country today: secure foreign exchange at the official rate (US$1/N199 before the central bank grudgingly freed prices in the interbank market), and proceed to sell the same allocation at the parallel market (where our benighted national currency then traded at circa US$1/N350). Depending on the volume of dollars one had access to, then, you could literally, make a billion naira without leaving the comfort of your patio.

For as long as the arbitrage window has existed between the official and parallel markets, this has been the case. Indeed, it was so, even when the emir was governor of the central bank. With this little difference: that a more buoyant market for crude oil meant that the apex bank was then able, with dollars still flowing into the gross external reserves (unlike now) to meet most domestic demand for the dollar; and so the window between the official and parallel market was thinner. Even then, for the well connected, there was still money to be made.

However, our elite have always made money from access to the instrument of the state. Way back in 1965, the federal minister of aviation, a certain Dr. Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe, (yes, he of the “timber and calibre” fame, but then) a “pragmatic socialist” owned up to having earned “chicken-feed rental” from first having had his company lease land off the federal government, and subsequently sub-leasing the same property to another government agency for like twice the rent he had initially paid. By the early 1980s, rent was most readily obtained from access to import licensing schemes. By the turn of the decade, the main source of rent after the many oil schemes was the waiver on imports. Simply, government bans the importation of some commodity, and grants to a favourite waivers on bringing the same goods in.

Evidently, there is this huge difference between the affluent here, and in economies that work. Ours do not simply fail to create any value, but by their existence are a large financial drain on the economy. By the same token, our poor and indigent differ from the poor and indigent in other places. In these other jurisdictions, much of the new narrative is around how the returns to capital are increasingly larger than that to labour, and how dwindling productivity means that few workers are able to ask for more than this dwindling share. Consequently, the main policy challenge in such places is how to deal with the growth of relative poverty.

Here, the poor are the direct consequence of the affluence of a few. So whereas better education of workers generally (but of the unskilled more especially) is put forward as a solution to the crisis of productivity facing developed economies in Europe and North America, here social infrastructure has failed because the elite must maintain their rent.

Put this way, therefore, our main policy goal ought to be the dismantling of the structures that conduce to profitable rent-seeking conduct. This problem is easier described than solved though. Over five decades ago, Chief Kolawole Balogun, counsel to the NCNC, Dr. K. O. Mbadiwe’s party, justified the latter’s malfeasance by arguing that “All top Nigerian ministers, parliamentarians, top civil servants, journalists,…indulge in these transactions.” It was, according to him, “the Nigerian way of life as it exists today, where everybody regards it as fair to make money.”

Alas, not much has changed since then!

Alvaro Arbeloa Reveals He Had Talks With AC Milan Before Deciding To Join West Ham

Featured Image

Alvaro Arbeloa has revealed that he held talks with AC Milan before joining West Ham.

The Spanish full-back penned a one-year deal with the Hammers on deadline day, having left Real Madrid when his contract expired at the end of June.

He was asked about interest in him from Milan on Spanish radio station Cadena COPE and replied: “There were quite advanced talks, [but] everything became complicated with the arrival of the [new] Chinese [owners at Milan] and I preferred something else.”

He signed for West Ham two full months after ending his seven-year spell at Real Madrid and admits choosing a new club was a difficult decision.

He added: “I took a long time to make a decision because I wanted to be convinced. When you leave Real Madrid it is very difficult, it is difficult to choose, it’s like leaving heaven and finding a destination on earth. But the club, the city and the coach convinced me. I had various offers from Spain, but over there I could only wear the shirt of Real Madrid.”

West Brom To Offer Jonny Evans New Contract

Featured Image

West Brom are ready to offer Jonny Evans a new  £75,000-a-week deal, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The report suggests Evans, who was a target for Arsenal this summer, will start negotiations over the new deal this month as Tony Pulis looks to make the defender the club’s top earner.

Arsenal were considering the former Manchester United centre-half before the £35million signing of Shkodran Mustafi and made an inquiry earlier in the summer.

But West Brom were clear in their message that Evans was not for sale at any price and received no further contact from Arsenal before the transfer window closed.

Evans was signed for £6million from United in August 2015 and has since emerged as a key player for head coach Tony Pulis, with just under three years remaining on his current deal.

Evans, 28, has accumulated more than 150 Premier League appearances throughout his career yet his still at an age where he could go on to play numerous more years at the top level

Liverpool Send Scouts To Watch Borussia Monchengladbach’s Mahmoud Dahoud

Featured Image

Liverpool are maintaining their pursuit of summer target Mahmoud Dahoud by sending scouts to watch the midfielder in action for the Germany U21s against Finland in Seinajoki tonight.

According to German newspaper Express, Jurgen Klopp has stepped up his interest in the 20-year-old Borussia Monchengladbach star with a view to making an improved bid next summer.

Dahoud was the subject of major interest from the Reds during the summer transfer window, but remained with Borussia Monchengladbach beyond the August 31 deadline.

This came due to Gladbach’s reluctance to part with the 20-year-old following the sale of Granit Xhaka to Arsenal.

Dahoud is currently in the final two years of his contract with Gladbach, and despite talks ongoing throughout the summer, he has shown no sign of extending his terms.

In fact, as Tony Barrett, formerly of the Times, has revealed in his first column for JOE.co.uk, Dahoud shares an agent with Reds midfielder Emre Can.

Liverpool have met with Reza Fazeli on a number of occasions throughout the summer to discuss an improved contract for Can, and their positive relationship has ensured that are in the “box seat” when it comes to signing Dahoud.

Christian Eriksen Signs New Contract At Tottenham

Featured Image

Christian Eriksen has put pen to paper on a new contract with Tottenham.

Eriksen had been in negotiations with Spurs since September last year, and has now agreed a four-year deal worth about £75,000 per week to stay at White Hart Lane.

Had he not signed, Eriksen would have entered the final year of his contract at start of next season.

Juventus expressed an interest in taking the player to Serie A while Manchester United also showed admiration when Louis van Gaal was in charge. Paris Saint-Germain also asked to be kept informed of developments.

But Eriksen has decided to stay at White Hart Lane, which will delight manager Mauricio Pochettino, who was thought to have been concerned at the lack of progress.

Eriksen joined Tottenham for about £11million from Ajax three years ago and has contributed a regular flow of goals and assists since then.

Petrol Price: FG Reacts As Oil Marketers Demand Increase To N165

Featured Image

The federal government of Nigeria has reacted to pressure mounted by the marketers of petroleum product for an upward review in the pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit – petrol.

According to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, and the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Maikanti Baru, there was no immediate plan to increase the pump price of petrol.

When approached by newsmen to speak on the planned increase in petrol price, Baru, who declined to speak at length, said: “There is nothing like that.”

READ ALSO: Petrol Price Increase Looms As N145/litre Is No Longer Feasible

Also, Kachikwu, when approached for comment, revealed that there was no memo before the Federal Government asking for a review of the price.

The minister’s respond came against the backdrop of reports by some marketers that Nigerians should prepare for another increase in petrol prices due to the continued scarcity of foreign exchange to finance the importation of the product.

The oil marketers had last month griped that the free fall of the naira against the dollar had made it unprofitable for them to import petrol and sell at the current rate of N145 per litre.

A source, who seems to be familiar to the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, disclosed that N165 is the pump price that will cover the cost of forex required for fuel importation.

Another source – official of one of the marketers’ associations – said,

“Let the government do the needful. We have already said it before that the price is not sustainable. When they fixed that price, dollar was N280 – N285; now the dollar is almost N400 and they want us to bring in products and sell at N145. It is not possible.

“But right now, most of us are getting the product from the NNPC; that is why you still see that there is product everywhere. It is an indirect case of subsidy. It means the government is subsidising it through the NNPC and we are buying at local price. Had it been that we were the ones that sourced the foreign exchange, we can’t sell it at N145.”

The development is coming barely four months after the government increased petrol prices from N86 and N86.5 per litre to between N135 and N145 per litre.

‘Wanted’ Journalist, Ahmed Salkida, Arrested In Abuja

Featured Image

The Department of State Services (DSS) has apprehended Ahmed Salkida, a journalist, who was declared wanted by the Nigerian Army in August 2016.

Sahara Reporters gathered that Salkida, who is said to have exclusive access to top Boko Haram commanders, was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Monday afternoon shortly after his flight landed.

The website quoted a female passenger who seated beside him as saying that Salkida – who travelled aboard an Emirates Airlines flight from Dubai using an emergency travel certificate – expressed fears about his possible arrest upon arrival in the country.

The website said: “Mr. Salkida further told the passenger that he did not know the whereabouts of Boko Haram leaders or Chibok girls. However, he admitted to receiving two video clips from Boko Haram before they were released to the public.”

This is just as The Punch quoted a security operative as saying:

“When we declared him wanted, he said he was willing to return to Nigeria but only on the condition that we send him a flight ticket.

“His Nigerian passport had expired but the Federal Government instructed the Nigeria Immigration Service not to issue him a new passport because he could run away after getting the passport. So, he was given an Emergency Travel Certificate, which allows the holder to travel only to his country of citizenship.

“With nowhere to run to, he had no choice but to return. So, immediately he boarded the plane from Dubai, we started waiting for him at the airport.”

It would be recalled, Salkida, a female lawyer, Aisha Waliki; and Ahmed Bolori were declared wanted by the military after Boko Haram released a video showing some of the Chibok girls it  abducted on  April 14, 2014.

Anxiety As Parents Trouble JAMB To Upload Children’s Final UTME 2016 Results

Featured Image

Several months after writing the 2016 /2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), quite a number of candidates are yet to know their admission status – particularly those who applied to study in the nation’s public tertiary institutions.

This is coming at a time when findings show that a lot of private universities have already started offering their candidates admissions for the 2016/2017 academic session.

A handful of parents and their candidates (children), who bared their complaints to The Punch on Monday, expressed chagrin at the examination body – Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) – for the delay or perhaps failure to upload the final admission lists, weeks after releasing the results.

The JAMB had two weeks ago assured that the first batch of the lists would be released after its meeting with stakeholders.

A week ago (Monday), the Head of Public Relations of JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, had urged candidates not to panic as he assured that the lists would be out before the end of the week.

However, as of Monday evening (yesterday), the board had yet to upload the lists on its website to enable candidates to access the information.

A parent and Chief Executive Officer of the Best of the World, Mrs. Joy Chinwokwu said: “The delay has created suspense for the candidates that want to know about their results. It is also making them not to explore other options, such as registering for the advanced level examinations. This delay is not good for the system.

“However, I blame the whole thing on lack of communication. The initial breakdown in communication between the Federal Ministry of Education and the vice-chancellors contributed to this. The initial directive to the universities without discussing with their authorities on the admission modalities for the year caused all of these. It also points to lack of policies and that we roll out directives without thinking them through.”

Also speaking, a group, the Education Rights Campaign (ERC) has called on the Minister of Education, Mr. Adamu Adamu, to intervene in ending the sad development, which it described as an “unpalatable one.”

Speaking via its Coordinator, Mr. Hassan Taiwo, the group said the controversies that had greeted this year’s UTME had made the candidates to be unsure of their future.

He said, “The many crises that accompanied this year’s UTME are disturbing. The minister of education must realise that the confusion in this year’s UTME has created all manner of controversies. One cannot understand why many months after the examination, candidates have not known their admission status. It is an unpalatable development. The contradictions in this year’s UTME portray a grave risk for the education sector. The minister should not remain silent on this issue. Nigerians expect him to help to address the issue urgently.”

A candidate, Gloria Onah, also decried the development, saying that the delay had altered her programme.

Onah, who applied to study Law at the Enugu State University of Technology, said, “As it is now, I cannot take any major academic decision. For months now, I have been battling to know the academic path to follow and just a few months to the end of the year, I am still unsure of my admission status this year. It is high time that JAMB concluded the process so that we can know our fate.”

Meanwhile, those institutions that have already offered candidates admissions are the Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, and the Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, also in Ogun State, among others.

Also, some public universities, such as the University of Benin, Edo State, will resume the 2016/17 academic session without their 100 level students.

A statement from the university, signed by its Registrar, Mrs. O Oshodin, urged all old students to return to the campus for the new session on September 22.

The statement added that lectures would commence on September 26.
