US Open: Serena Williams Beats Halep In Quarterfinals

Featured Image

Serena Williams had to fight hard to beat world number five, Simona Halep to qualify for the semifinals at the US Open.

The world number one, claimed a 6-2, 4-6 6-3 win over her opponent to get a step closer to a 23rd title.

The 34-year-old will play Czech no. 10 Karolina Pliskova in the semifinals of the tournament.

A huge shock loomed when she stood at 15-40 early in the second set, but Williams won three straight games to build a lead she would not relinquish.

“I lost my rhythm a little in the second set and Simona kept playing really well, going for her shots,” said Williams.

“But I knew if I wanted to win this I needed to step it up in the third set.”

Pliskova, 24, beat Croatian teenager Ana Konjuh 6-2 6-2 to reach the last four of a Grand Slam for the first time.

She did not face a break point and dropped only five points on her serve as she swept past the 18-year-old in just 57 minutes.

“I am so excited to be in my first semi-final, especially in this tournament,” said Pliskova. “I very much love New York and the hard-court season.”

Boxing: Brook Admits He Is Afraid

Featured Image

Kell Brook has admitted he is scared of the upcoming bout against Gennady Golovkin on Saturday. But knows it’ll help him be better.

The undefeated British boxer is attempting to beat WBA Super, WBC and IBF middleweight champion, Golovkin, after moving from welterweight to middleweight.

After hearing Golovkin (35-0-KO32) insist he is “not scared” of the occasion, Brook (36-0-KO25) said: “There is fear in me over this fight but that’s going to make me so sharp on the night. Having that fear is healthy. It’s good for me to be sharp and switched on throughout the fight.

“The talking is over. The training is over. It’s coming down to two champions, two top fighters fighting each other on Saturday night and I can’t wait to shock the world.”

Brook said: “I’m in great shape. I pushed myself through every training session and I’m passionate about doing something no British fighter’s have done. I believe it will be the biggest win ever.

“I think I’ve got the skills. Everyone is going on that I’m a small guy coming up but that’s not the case. I’ve never trained like I’ve trained for this with the calories and the fuel. I’ve been a joy to train and have been able to dig in and go past what I’ve done before.

“Coming into this fight, I’m healthy and strong. I believe it’s written and I really do believe this is my time.

“We aren’t taking ridiculous amounts of weight off to make 147lbs. I’ve probably been 60-70 per cent in my career and we’re going to see 100 per cent on Saturday.”

Oscar: Conte Has Boosted My Confidence

Featured Image

Chelsea midfielder Oscar has praised manager Antonio Conte for boosting his form after last season’s failed EPL trophy defense.

Chelsea have won all three games they’ve played this Sunday under Antonio Conte.

Oscar has now stated he likes playing in the Central midfield role which he is used than the wing.

“[Conte] is giving me a lot of confidence and I’m doing very well,” Oscar said. “Hopefully I can continue to do so.

“In the last few seasons I have played as a 10 or as a winger. Now I’m going back to my original position of number eight, attacking and defending from box to box, which is my original role and the one I like the most.

“It’s been a very successful time for me here at Chelsea. I won a lot in the last few seasons – the Premier League, League Cup and the Europa League.

“Only last season wasn’t great, not only individually, but as a team. Hopefully this season we will win trophies and get back to a winning mentality.

“The objective is not only to finish in the top four, but to fight for the league, FA Cup and League Cup because we have to win trophies.”

Conte’s training methods also won praise from Oscar, who has started all three Premier League games to date under the Italian.

“The coach has changed the formation, we are playing a different system to last season,” Oscar said.

“His training method is different to what we had last season and he’s changed both the players’ mentality and the team’s mentality. I think we have improved since he’s come here.

“I think you can see that last season we were lacking a bit of resilience. We had that spirit in some games, but we weren’t consistent.

“It’s good to have that spirit back and we are looking to improve on that front. If we keep up this team spirit, we will be a threat in the Premier League.”

Real Madrid And Atletico To Serve Transfer Bans

Featured Image

Real and Atletico Madrid will be unable to sign players for the next two transfer windows after their appeal against the FIFA transfer ban was rejected.

Fifa accuses both clubs of violating the rules relating to the protection and transfer of minors.

After initially being handed the punishment in January, the bans were temporarily delayed pending appeal but they will now suffer the same fate as Barcelona, who were found guilty of similar offences in 2014.

“The FIFA Appeal Committee has decided to reject the appeals lodged by Spanish clubs Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid and to confirm in their entirety the decisions rendered by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee in the respective cases relating to the protection of minors,” a FIFA statement reads.

“Both clubs are to serve a transfer ban that prevents them from registering any players at national and international level for the next two complete and consecutive registration periods for breaching articles 5, 9, 19 and 19bis as well as annexes 2 and 3 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (the “Regulations”).

“The transfer ban applies to each club as a whole – with the exception of the women’s, futsal and beach soccer teams – and does not prevent the release of players.

“Additionally, Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid have been fined CHF 900,000 and CHF 360,000 respectively, while both clubs have been issued with a reprimand and a warning and given 90 days in which to regularise the situation of all minor players concerned.

“The grounds of the decisions taken by the FIFA Appeal Committee were communicated to the parties concerned today.”

In a statement released immediately after FIFA had announced its decision, Real Madrid described the verdict as “profoundly unfair” and confirmed their intention to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Pochettino: Eriksen Will Improve In Future Matches

Featured Image

Christian Eriksen has been backed to improve for Tottenham in future encounters by manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The Denmark midfielder signed a new four-year deal at the club before his deal was set to expire.

He had suffered a dip in form prior to signing the renewal and Pochettino believes he’ll get back on track.

“Perhaps subconsciously, the speculation can affect you when you are in the process of negotiating your future,” Pochettino said ahead of Saturday’s trip to Stoke City.

“It is not about money. It’s about your future. Sometimes it is difficult but we trust Christian, he is happy to stay and there is no doubt he will improve his performance in the future. If the club give him a better contract, it is because he deserves it.

“For players it is about performances. It is about being focused in training, improving fitness, showing quality, the relationship with your team-mates on the pitch. There is no doubt about Christian’s quality or his skills.

“This contract is important for him and for us. It will stop the rumours and he can be focused only on playing football. This is the last time we will talk about Eriksen’s contract and the rumours.

“It is good for him and the club. We are all happy.”

Eriksen has made 101 league appearances since joining Spurs from Ajax ahead of the 2013-14 season, scoring 23 goals.

Emery Wanted To Hold On To Luiz

Featured Image

Unai Emery, PSG coach has stated he wanted David Luiz to remain at the club, but the defender elected against that.

The Brazilian defender left the capital club to rejoin the club he left two years ago. And he’s leaving PSG stranded for defenders in the process.

Emery plans to use Serge Aurier as cover in centre back, but Thiago Silva is expected back from hip injury and is due for his first match of the season.

“The transfer window is over,” Emery told reporters ahead of PSG’s Ligue 1 match against Saint-Etienne on Friday.

“I wanted David Luiz here but he said he had a good offer from Chelsea and he wanted to leave. He knew my position, then he spoke with the club and he obtained his agreement.

“Today we have three central defenders and Serge Aurier can evolve into a central defender with a little work. He can help the team if needed.

“Silva is an important player for the team, a reference for the other players. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow but I will not take risks. We will not rush him.

“Marquinhos, Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria arrive [back from international duty] today. We will see how they are for tomorrow’s game.

“On the other hand, we take our decision for the four injured players: Aurier, Jese, Silva and Javier Pastore. Maxwell had a little pain and did not participate in training on Tuesday and Wednesday. But I want all players to be 100 per cent.

“Grzegorz Krychowiak is motivated and he wants to play, so that’s good. He will show his qualities when he returns.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), gathered that the accused was arraigned on August 17, on suspicion that he stole the amount from the Church’s tithe box.

Straightaway, the suspect pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of theft.

While delivering his verdict, the magistrate frowned in disgust that people could still steal from the house of God.

“It is a pity that people do not see the house of God as sacred anymore.

“This judgment should serve as a lesson to the public, if you choose crime instead of hard work, the hand of the law will always catch up with you.

“Nnoruga, you are hereby sentenced to six months imprisonment without an option of fine,” he declared.

Mr Ben Ekundayo, the prosecutor, had told the court that the convict committed the offence on Aug. 14, at about 2 p.m., at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Idumaigbo, Lagos.

Ekundayo said that the convict stole N214, 000 from the tithe box after Church service.

He said that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

In front of about 15,000 guests, Monroe took the stage. She sang ‘Happy Birthday, Mr President‘ at the Madison Square Garden. The sexy performance was coupled with the fact that the then first lady, Jacqueline Kennedy was absent at the fundraiser. This ignited rumors that Marilyn Monroe and the President were having an affair.

According to Darren Julien, President and Chief Executive of Julien’s Auctions, the Auction House holding the sale, the dress is expected to sell for at least $2 million. The auction will also hold on the 17th of November.

Murray After Nishikori Loss: I Didn’t Disappoint Anyone

Featured Image

Andy Murray is defiant and proud despite his loss to Kei Nishikori, insisting he has not disappointed anyone.

World number 6, Nishikori beat the Briton 1-6 6-4 4-6 6-1 7-5 to hand the 29-year-old his earliest Grand Slam defeat of the season.

The Scot, 29, finished runner-up at the Australian and French Opens before winning Wimbledon and Olympic gold.

“I tried my best. I fought as as hard as I could with what I had today,” said the world number two.

“I pushed myself as hard as I could over the last few months and I’m very proud of how I’ve done.”

The defeat was only the second in 28 matches for Murray, who had reached the final of his previous seven tournaments, stretching back to the Madrid Open in May.

That run brought him his first Italian Open, fifth Queen’s Club, second Wimbledon and second Olympic titles.

“If someone had offered me the summer that I have had before Wimbledon, I probably would have signed for that,” said Murray.

“After a few days away, I would imagine I’d be very happy with how I’ve done and learn from this match and the summer as a whole, because it’s been tough.

“I’m happy how it’s gone. There’s just a few things I could do differently next time.”

Dear Lai, Change Does NOT Begin With Me

Dear Lai, Change Does NOT Begin With Me – Abimbola Adelakun

Today, Thursday, September 8, in the Federal Capital Territory, the Federal Government will finally launch the “Change Begins With Me’’ campaign that will “entrench the values of accountability, integrity and positive attitudinal change” in Nigerians. This campaign will be one of the several inelegantly arrayed on the shelf of Nigeria’s history.

This piece was written by Abimbola Adelakun. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

Olusegun Obasanjo, as President, launched “Heart of Africa” and also formed an elite team tasked with supervising the project implementation, promoting virtues and urging us to better behaviour. They took the project to the United Kingdom and the United States but neither launch went too well. Obasanjo massively pumped money into the international media to advertise HOA, positioning himself as the Face of Nigeria; just what the world needs to see to come and invest in Nigeria. The programme was eventually dumped after his tenure expired. Despite the glaring lessons, Nigeria soon embarked on a similar drive with “Rebranding Nigeria” launched by the late Minister of Information and Culture, Prof. Dora Akunyili.

Despite armed with a cheap logo and a feel-good slogan, “Good people, Great nation,” the project never really took off. Those who conceived it with Akunyili said it was because it never received adequate support by the government but in reality it could not have taken off if Nigerians did not invest in it emotionally. Really, why take another white sepulchre campaign by a country that consistently fails to uphold its share of the social contract seriously?

With all the benefits of history in hindsight, Nigeria wants to launch another programme with an agenda that basically mirrors the Heart of Africa. The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, a man who has degraded the Goebbellian art of political propaganda with his lack of innovative misrepresentations, thinks Nigeria will change for the better if her longsuffering citizens improve their morals.

Mohammed said, “About three to five years back now, the role models in the society were people of doubtful character. Money was worshipped; nobody cared where and how one got the money. These are the misplaced values that we are tackling now.” The man’s sneakiness seems boundless. By suggesting that Nigerian values collapsed between 2011 and 2013, he treads the well-worn path of blaming the government’s immediate predecessor for everything that is wrong with Nigeria. If he goes back a little further, he would touch the late President Umaru Yar’Adua. To go back even much farther would hit Obasanjo and risk his legendary vindictiveness. Mohammed therefore conveniently abjures history and blames President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration’s perennial whipping boy – Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

If Mohammed had consulted a sense of history, he would have realised that corruption is as old as Nigeria. Every coup speech ever read in Nigeria alluded to corruption by the ruling class. That was partly what brought down the First Republic. Mohammed should read, that is if he hasn’t done that by now, Chinua Achebe’s No Longer at Ease and A Man of the People, the latter book a sociological treatise on the culture of corruption and how it implicates the wilfully and unwilfully corrupt. What else is left for him to say about corruption and its social impact that has not been said in the past? Does Mohammed imagine that what ails Nigeria can be cured by a campaign that beats people on the head with empty slogans, media noise, and mere spectacles? If all the churches and mosques in Nigeria who deafen our poor ears with noise every day of our Nigerian lives have not resolved the problem, what good will Mohammed’s campaign do?

Here is another instance of Mohammed’s disingenuity: He said the campaign would not be the same as Buhari’s famous WAI (another project with an incoherent manifesto launched some weeks ago) but they would achieve what Buhari did in 1985 through persuasion. He said, “In 1983, they used what they had to achieve what they wanted, which was to correct the decadence in society, tackle corruption and impunity. However, in the area of enforcement, people alleged infractions and intimidation.”

To Mohammed, the wanton abuses people experienced under the jackboot of Buhari was simply a matter of allegations and its truth basis does not really matter. His argument is like speaking with the split fang of a snake: it did not happen but if it did, it was out of necessity for a government eager to straighten the country. Of course, Mohammed works with Buhari and he cannot be expected to be critical of his boss but if he would take some time to read Prof Wole Soyinka’s essay, “The Crimes of Buhari,” he would know that those cases of “infractions and intimidations” were no mere allegations.

This is what Mohammed and his fellow campaigners must note: Change does not begin with the average Nigerian. No, it begins with those who promised us “change” a year ago. They got into office and Nigeria turned out to be animal farm where clueless pigs replaced clueless human. Readers of Animal Farm will recall the iconic scene at the end where the face of the pigs and that of human were no longer distinguishable. Those who were kicked out are no worse than those who replaced them. Rather than own up to their foibles, Mohammed wants to push the responsibility of changing Nigeria to poor hapless people. His campaign is an alibi being prepared for their government in case they end up with an F on their report card.

Change Begins With Me will be their excuse if they do not achieve what they promised Nigerians. With it, they can blame their victims – the poor Nigerians who have a poor attitude which has kept the country poor. Similar campaigns in the past have failed and this one is not going anywhere either because it is another shoddy attempt to deny the reality that plagues our Nigerian existence. The campaign is a diversionary tactic, a propaganda vehicle for paternalistic pontification by a hypocritical lot. They want to ask Nigerians to develop the culture of integrity and accountability when the government from whose body language we take our behavioural cues lacks similar values. Oh, and the cruel irony of the same Mohammed that raided a government ministry to fund his international travel now instructing us on values!

In the past one year, this government has displayed a lack of coordination, and inconsistency in issuing policies. That has impacted the economy rather poorly.

Today, in many places in Nigeria, people are starving and the tension that pervades the land reminds one of the Sani Abacha years. In the midst of such hopelessness, crimes will rise and duplicity will increase as people hustle to survive. In that same period, Mohammed will launch a campaign to teach people to be honest and accountable. He will distribute posters and other materials that will eventually become an environmental nuisance to ask people to develop moral values. He will stage spectacular concerts that are expected to pierce our consciousness and convert us to good behaviour. All of this, let us not forget, will gulp money like similar ones in the past.

It is amusing that all the examples of corruption by Nigerians which Mohammed and co stated that they want to erase through attitudinal change are symptoms of the culture of poverty and underdevelopment. Their failure to see it for what it is means that a solution will not be fashioned soon.

Mohammed is actually right that Nigeria’s problems do not begin and end with its elite but having travelled on this same campaign route at least twice, we can recognise fatuous nonsense from afar. If such an initiative will exist, it should be at the behest of a private organisation, not a floundering government.

No, change does not begin with Nigerians and we will not let them shift that responsibility to us. If they want change, let them start with themselves and their tribe of rulers!

It was learnt that the victim who came from Edo State went to the FMC to treat malaria fever only to discover after a blood test that the victim had contacted the deadly disease.

In an attempt to curtail the spread of the disease the state government transferred the victim back to Edo State where he came from – in what it described as a proactive measure.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Dayo Adeyanju, who confirmed the case, said that the surveillance and containment machinery of government had been stepped up to prevent a spread of the disease.

FRSC To Enforce Speed Limiting Device On October 1

Featured Image

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Wednesday warned that it would not shift the stipulated date – October 1, 2016 – for the implementation of speed limiters in commercial vehicles.

The Corp Marshall, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, who gave the warning in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital at a public enlightenment forum for transport stakeholders in the state, stated that October 1, remains sacrosanct for the enforcement.

The warning confirms the recently declared October 1 2016 as deadline for drivers of commercial vehicles to install speed limiters – a move aimed at reducing ‘road mishap’ in the country.

Speaking on behalf of the Corp Marshall, the Assistant Corps Marshall in charge of policy, research and statistics, Dr. Michael Olagunju, who lamented the alarming statistics of road crashes in Nigeria highways, hinted that the speed limiting device would save Nigerians from loss of lives on the highways.

He quoted the Corps Marshall as saying that in 2015 alone over 12,077 road crashes were recorded out of which 5,400 people representing 68percent were said to have died as a result of over speeding alone.

Olagunji also expressed in dismay that most of the crashes would have been avoided if appropriate safety measures were being adopted by the motorists when plying on the highways.

He maintained that accident are caused not made, adding, “most of the road crashes are preventable, if we are able to bring down the speed, we will be saving a lot of lives on our highways.”

18 Boko Haram Militants Surrender To Nigerian Military As Factions Clash In Borno

Featured Image

No less than 18 members of the Boko Haram Islamist militant group and their families have surrendered to Nigerian military after bloody clashes erupted between factions loyal to the group’s founder, Abubakar Shekau, and the IS-backed Abu Musab Albarnawi in northeastern town of Monguno, Borno state, AFP said on Thursday.

“They are under custody of Monguno command and we believe the dual battle between Albarnawi and Shekau’s camps may have compelled them to sneak out and surrender,” Ali Mohammed, a member of a vigilante group in northeastern town of Monguno, said on Wednesday.

Trouble started within the hegemony of the sect after the Islamic State group announced Abu Musab al-Barnawi, the son of Boko Haram’s founder Mohammed Yusuf, as the sect’s new leader to replace Abubakar Shekau.

Even though his allegiance remains with the Islamic States, the undeterred Shekau insisted that he was still in charge of the Nigerian-based ferocious death cult.

Last Thursday, several fighters from Shekau’s camp were said to have been killed in two separate gun battles with IS-backed Barnawi gunmen in the Monguno area of Borno State near Lake Chad.

A source, Mele Kaka, told AFP that: “The Barnawi faction launched an offensive against the fighters of Shekau faction who were camped in Yele and Arafa villages.

“In Yele, the assailants killed three people from the Shekau camp, injured one and took one with them, while several others were killed in Arafa.”

“The Barnawi fighters told villagers after each attack that they were fighting the other camp because they had derailed from the true jihad and were killing innocent people, looting their property and burning their homes.

“They said such acts contravene the teachings of Islam and true jihad.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian military has declined to comment on the reported in-fighting when contacted by AFP.

Zabaleta: City Are Lucky To Have Guardiola

Featured Image

Pablo Zabaleta says Manchester City are lucky to have Pep Guardiola as manager, believing he can take the club to the next stage.

The former Bayern manager has impressed already at City, securing three wins in three matches.

He has won German and Spanish titles with Bayern and Barcelona, and has also enjoyed European success at Barcelona.

And that experience makes Zabaleta believe the current City squad can go from strength to strength in the coming years.

“I think for players when you have the opportunity to work with the best managers it’s something really special,” he is quoted as saying by the Daily Star.

“The experience will be great and I’m sure that in the next three years the club will make a step forward.

“I am absolutely sure of this because Pep Guardiola is one of the greatest managers and we are so lucky to have him at Manchester City.

“For him it’s a new experience of the Premier League, a different league, and so I think the players will need to try and help him.

“Especially those of us who have been here a long time who know the Premier League very well. We need to work as a group and try to play well.

“His style of play is maybe a bit different to what we’ve done in the past. But that is normal every time you work under a new manager with their own ideas. You have to work hard.”

NBMA Denies Presence Of Poisonous Rice In Nigeria

Featured Image

Reports of genetically-modified and thus poisonous rice being present in the Nigerian market are false.

This is according to Dr. Rufus Ebegba, the Director-General of the National Biosafety Management Agency.

He said, “The attention of the NBMA has been drawn to a certain online post that a firm and the government of Nigeria have flooded the Nigerian market with the GM rice purported to be poisonous.

“This falsehood definitely is the product of the writer’s imagination, who probably is using a pseudo name.

“As a regulatory body established by the government to regulate the activities of modern biotechnology and the release and use of genetically modified organisms in the country to ensure safety to the environment and human health, the NBMA wishes to state that there is no iota of truth in the said post and reinstates that no GM rice has either been imported or released officially into the country.

No poisonous rice in Nigeria

“In a bid to cast aspersions on the modest efforts of the government towards the adoption of safe biotechnology in Nigeria, the writer craftly and maliciously laced his post with poison to cause unnecessary public panic.”

He added, “No GM rice has been commercially released anywhere in the world. It should also be recalled that the government has banned the importation of rice in Nigeria. This ban was widely publicised in the media and there are no indications that the ban has been lifted.

“The NBMA therefore enjoins Nigerians to disregard the post and join hands with the agency in its quest to ensure safety in the practice of modern biotechnology in Nigeria in line with global best practices.”
