Bag Of Rice May Sell For N40,000 In December – Minister

Featured Image

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, has cautioned Nigerians of the possibility of paying a huge sum of N40,000 for a bag of rice by December.

Speaking on Saturday at a town hall meeting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, the minister said that Nigeria spends about $22bn a year on importation of food.

READ ALSO: BREAKING: NYSC Releases Mobilization Timetable For 2016 Batch B | See Dates Here

Lokpobiri lamented that the large amount spent on food importation was having an adverse effect on the prices of commodities with rice inclusive.

He also stressed that unless Nigerian government begin rice production, prices would soar to N40,000 from its current N26,000.

His words: “For your information, we spend about $22bn a year importing food into Nigeria. We know how many more dollars … and that is why you see the price of rice going up.

“Price of rice was N12,000 some months ago, but it is now about N26,000 and if we don’t start producing, by December it could be N40,000.

“Rice matures in three months. So, this is a wake up call for Bayelsa people to take the four farms we have seriously. The federal government has four farms in the state in our records. The average land you see in Bayelsa can grow rice, so the colonial masters were not wrong in their assessment when they said Niger Delta could feed not only Nigeria but the entire West Africa sub-region.

“Unfortunately, agriculture till today, is not a priority of the Niger Delta as far as the state governments are concerned because of oil.”

Lokpobiri also called on states in the Niger Delta to give priority to agriculture the way the North-West states such as Kebbi, Jigawa, Kano as well as other states like Lagos, Ebonyi, Anambra, have prioritised it.

I Believe In ‘Testing’ Before Marriage, Says Queeneth Agbor

Featured Image

Fast-rising Nigerian actress, Queeneth Agbor, has given her full support on sex before marriage as she believes that ‘people need to have a feel of what they would have to live with for the rest of their lives.’

The Calabar-born Nollywood star brought this sensational revelation to light during an interview with The Punch.

She said:  “You have to know your package, I am not saying just go into it anyhow but just test it. You need to know what you are going into, so you don’t start cheating on your spouse. Most marriages that break up are solely because of this issue. So I think it is important for you to know what you are getting into.”

In one of her interviews, she had revealed that she did not get a role in a movie that had Tonto Dikeh, as lead actress, because she refused to sleep with the producer of the movie.

The information was later diluted as many people were of the opinion that she said Tonto Dikeh slept with the producer of the movie in order to get the lead role.

Reacting to it, she said: “People always have something to talk about. It does not matter whether you say things that are meant to inspire people or not. People always have a way of making a mountain out of a molehill. I refused to respond before now because what was reported was not what I meant. I was only trying to inspire people by saying    that Nollywood is not about sex for roles. In order to succeed, you need to know your worth and you must also be able to pray ceaselessly. I didn’t say Tonto Dikeh slept with any producer.  People will keep talking and that’s their problem.”

On why many people believe that Calabar girls are husband snatchers, the Calabar-born actress, said: “I don’t think we (Calabar girls) are husband snatchers, but we know how to keep a man to ourselves. Some men don’t like food, so you might not be able to keep him through that, but men like it when a lady is clean and of course good in bed. A  Calabar girl is a combination of all.”

Ronaldo: Real Madrid Will Win The La Liga

Featured Image

Cristiano Ronaldo is confident Real Madrid will prove too strong for Atletico and Barcelona in the race to win the La Liga.

Los Blancos last won the domestic league in 2011-12 and have fallen behind their rivals ever since.

Nevertheless, they have made a fine start to the 2016-17 campaign and have already taken a lead over both Barca and Atletico, much to Ronaldo’s delight.

“I want to win all possible trophies and would love to win La Liga,” the attacker told reporters.

“It is a title that we will be going after and the team is looking good and solid. We’ve started well and I hope we can continue to do well.

“It is a long competition, but I am convinced we will win it this year.”

Recent reports suggested Ronaldo is set to sign a contract renewal with Madrid and the 31-year-old hopes to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu for the rest of his career.

“At the moment I can’t imagine anything other than seeing out my career at Real Madrid,” he added.

“It is the biggest club in the world and the best players are here. What I really want is to keeping moving forward and to end my career here.”

She said:

Kevin Garret is an amazing songwriter who co-wrote “Pray You Catch Me” on Beyoncé’s album Lemonade.

He came to me, played this song and I felt like it fit what we are doing on the album.

He’s super super dope…. Everyone was so proud, oh my god.

And we’ve been meaning to get to the studio and get something done, and so finally we have this song.

I’m Jamaican so it was like, Oh my god, perfect vibes. I’m also really in love with Afrobeats music.

I met Wizkid and we’ve wanted to work with each other for a long time, and I just felt like it was the right thing to get him on the song.

It was just the right vibe, you know, it’s Jamaica meets Africa, reggae meets Afrobeats.

They’re different but they have kind of the same sounds in a way.

In addition, Justin revealed her upcoming album which will drop by the first quarter of next year, 2017, is focused on lessons learnt from love.

A statement by the Chief Military Public Information Officer of the MNJTF, Colonel Muhammad Dole, said:

Additionally, the troops of Sector 4 in Diffa Niger Republic tracked and neutralized 4 x BHT suspected to have attacked the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp and Two (2) others were arrested at Tumoua village.

Giroud: Arsenal Are The Underdogs Against PSG In UCL

Featured Image

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud believes the gunners are the underdogs ahead of their first UCL game against PSG.

Both clubs are expected to take the top two spots in the group after they were drawn alongside Basel and Ludogrets.

PSG were held to a 1-1 draw in their domestic league, with Arsenal winning 2-1. And Giroud feels his side will have to raise their game to have any chance in the French capital.

“We knew this victory over Southampton would require character even if everything was not easy. The Champions League is a different competition,” Giroud told Telefoot.

“Paris will regroup from their draw and are the favourites and leader of this group. It is up to us to put doubt into them.”

PSG opted not to sign a direct replacement for club record goalscorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic following the expiration of his contract at the end of June, with Edinson Cavani entrusted with the responsibility of leading the line in his stead.

The Uruguayan has scored one goal in his first three Ligue 1 appearances of the season, but Giroud knows better than to take his counterpart lightly.

“Ibrahimovic had a very good season and it is important to them that someone takes over,” he added.

“Cavani, if he is having a good night, can hurt us, especially with his shooting.”

Mikel: David Luiz Has Returned Better Than He Left

Featured Image

John Obi Mikel believes David Luiz Has eradicated his mistakes in the two seasons he spent at PSG.

The Brazil defender re-signed for Chelsea on a deal worth £32m and could feature against Swansea. Mikel, who is returning from Rio, after winning bronze with Nigeria, could also return.

Mikel believes that Luiz has eradicated the errors out of his game since his time at PSG and will be a better player in his second spell at the club.

“One thing is for sure, he has definitely improved his game in Paris,” Mikel told Goal. “I think we will see a much better David Luiz. He is coming into the team to help the team.”

“He’s a great player, uses both feet. Great defender, I think he has gone to Paris Saint-Germain and improved his game quite a lot so I think maybe some of the pundits, last time he was here, they weren’t really in support of him.”

Mikel and Luiz struck up a friendship in the Brazilian’s first spell at the club and are two of only three Chelsea players left that were involved in the club’s first ever Champions League trophy, beating Bayern Munich in 2012.

Golovkin: Brook Does Not Quality As A Middleweight

Featured Image

Gennady Golovkin has sent a jibe Kell Brook’s way, saying the British boxer didn’t fight like a middleweight.

Golovkin Remains Undefeated, After Beating Kell Brook In Fifth Round

The undefeated Kazakh boxer absorbed all the punches the British could throw, and he stated he didn’t feel it.

Brook Taken To Hospital With Broken Eye Socket

Kell Brook jumped up two weight divisions, piling on 13lbs more to make middleweight. But Golovkin insists he felt out of his weight class.

“I promised to bring a big drama show because I know Kell is a huge fighter, a very good fighter – but sorry, he’s not a middleweight,” Golovkin told Sky Sports.

“I know my style. I respect him, he’s good, but not so strong.”

Asked if Brook significantly hurt him, Golovkin said: “No, no, he just touched. It’s like training, I stay relaxed, I didn’t feel his power. So many punches, but I didn’t feel.

“Thanks to his corner, for his career, for his family. It’s correct, this. Because I feel it was game over.”

Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez reiterated his belief that no fighter from light-middleweight to super-middleweight could survive the Kazakh.

Sanchez said: “Anybody from 154lbs to 168lbs wouldn’t go 12 rounds with him. Kell is a very good fighter but eventually they’re going to break down.

“Eventually [Golovkin’s] power and ability to land clean punches is going to take effect.”

The IBF, WBC and WBA ‘Super’ champion also sent out a challenge to Britain’s WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders.

Although he claimed to be “absolutely” keen to fight Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, Golovkin’s priority is to add Saunders’ belt to his own collection.

“I’m a boxer, I’m open for everybody, but I want a unification fight,” he said. “First of all, I would like Billy Joe Saunders because he has the WBO belt.”

Brook Taken To Hospital With Broken Eye Socket

Featured Image

Kell Brook had to be taken to the hospital for a broken eye socket, after his defeat to Gennady Golovkin.

Golovkin Remains Undefeated, After Beating Kell Brook In Fifth Round

Dominic Ingle threw in the towel in the fifth round of the O2 Arena bout, after seeing his boxer had severe visual impairment.

The British boxer would have gone on for longer, and insists he is eager to get back in the ring.

Brook moved up two weight divisions to face Golovkin and even though he called for a fight of the winner of Saul Canelo Alvarez v Liam Smith, he admits that he may now be better suited to light middleweight in his next fight, despite having an IBF title to defend at welterweight.

“In the second round, he broke my eye socket but I was tricking him, I was frustrating him. I was starting to settle into it but when you see three, four, five of them, it’s difficult,” said Brook.

“I’d be most suited at light-middle. I know (Liam) Smith and ‘Canelo’ (Saul Alvarez) are fighting next week: I would love the winner.

“He’s a scary champion but I would fight him again. I’m trying to give back to the fans and I hope they enjoyed the fight while it lasted.

“It wasn’t my night because there was much more to come from me but I was seeing five of them out there.

“I’m a warrior, I want to carry on, I was ready to fight on. Anyone who trains with me knows that.

“I was starting to come on. We knew the first five or six rounds would be tough, but you would have to talk to my coach to ask him why he pulled me out. I’ll be back.”

Happy Recession, Nigeria!

Featured Image

Happy Recession, Nigeria!, By Gimba Kakanda

We do not know the exact starting date of this historic festival, nor are we in the know of its likely ending date. I mean this festival of inflation and hunger, unemployment and job cuts, liquidation and crime, mental health crises and despair. There’s something savagely beautiful about celebrating our misery, about refusing to see it as a danger, preferring to call it a mere “word”, for example, since it does not threaten the existence of those in the political house – elected politicians and their allies in and out of the corridor of power.

This piece was written by Gimba Kakanda. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

Some think the decision to celebrate our misery was taken on our behalf by our foreign-sounding Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun. It’s a fact that she called the decline in our Gross Domestic Product by -2.06 percent a recession, a mere word. And it’s also a fact that she has not told us why a decline in one sector – which contributed only 15 percent of the GDP, according to her professional colleagues – has resulted in a recession. This is somewhat strange for an administration that claims to have been diversifying, contradicting reports that our non-oil exports have dropped by 43 percent.

Adeosun’s denial of our threatening reality is a familiar trend amongst our governing elite. Reacting to the ranking of Nigeria as one of the five poorest countries in the world by the World Bank, then President Goodluck Jonathan said, “Nigeria is not a poor country. Nigerians are the most travelled people. There is no country you go that you will not see Nigerians.” And then, “I visited Kenya recently on a state visit and there was a programme for Nigerian and Kenyan business men to interact and the number of private jets that landed in Nairobi that day was a subject of discussion in Kenyan media for over a week.”

This disheartening yardstick of measuring poverty was actually that of a president of a nation “with almost 100 million people living on less than a $1 (£0.63) a day” – according a 2012 data. So, it didn’t come as a surprise reading the similarly elitist delusion of Mr. Bayo Onanuga, a journalist whose class suicide as a firebrand critic of elitism and military brutality to a former senatorial candidate and now head of the government-controlled News Agency of Nigeria is as intriguing as it comes. He pandered to Jonathan’s thinking, that the luxurious lifestyles of beneficiaries of the nation’s most corrupt class represents the realities of a blacksmith in Potiskum, a roadside yam seller in Ogbomosho and a vulcaniser in Onitsha.

To Mr. Onanuga, a text message from his London-bound daughter – “Daddy, the flight was filled up o” – was a confirmation of his belief that reports of economic hardship in Nigeria were untrue and the true situation exaggerated. His reaction to the threatened existence of citizens who may go to bed tonight without any means is Denial. It is a style of engagement widely adopted by other government appointees, all understandably immune to hunger.

…since we are in reality being asked to celebrate this severe economic downturn, let me kindly wish Nigerians toasting to national misery a happy recession.

On various social media platforms, other outspoken political appointees have been publishing statistics that not only repel our realities but attempt to create an imaginary paradise for Nigerians. In line with the festive nature of the times, of course. Even the president’s media managers seem to believe their bogus statistics and grandstanding on Twitter will redeem the growing inflation and hunger nationwide. But the truth is that it is even their confrontational and combative style of communicating these alternate realities that will multiply the army of displeased citizens. It’s unfortunate that our friends who used to be critical of the government suddenly are now quick to say to say, “You guys are too critical” on finally jumping ship.

Like our politicians, the trappings of political power have confused the conscience of our former civic allies. They have become even worse than the Establishment they once antagonised. Instead of delivering on their roles of advising their principals, they are becoming intolerably obnoxious, giving the managers of our economy illusions of good performance and misleading public perception.

The governing elite have succeeded in recruiting the Bayo Onanugas into contradictions of their old values, so that they now see the civic vigilance they were once known for as a social nuisance. It has got to the point that when a critic points to a snake, the politicians were given power to hire able hands to kill, he’s asked to tell the government how to kill it. And this, unfortunately, is the mentality of the praise-singing brigade stationed to defend our politicians. The critic highlights shortcomings to get the government’s think-tank ticking. You can’t be in possession of a fire extinguisher and ask the man who alerts you to fire to quench it for you!

If a leader expects more from critics after being shown a flaw in his idea, he’s either incompetent or his lieutenants are due for the sack. The similarity between a critic and a politician is that both have ideas. The difference is what matters. Only one has access to popular political legitimacy, administrative machinery and the public purse. But since we are in reality being asked to celebrate this severe economic downturn, let me kindly wish Nigerians toasting to national misery a happy recession. May God save us from us!
