Smith: Fear Will Drive Me In Fight Against Alvarez

Featured Image

British boxer Liam Smith has stated fear is the force driving him to victory against Canelo Alvarez on Saturday.

Canelo has lost just one of his 49 bouts to Floyd Mayweather, but knocked out Amir Khan last May.

“That’s the most beautiful part of it all, even though it also takes some adaptation and getting used to. I am looking forward to it and I do not have any doubts. I am full of confidence and believe in my body.

“Things are looking good, but I have learned from the past. I don’t want to celebrate too early. Things went very well on Thursday, now we’ll see how it goes on Friday.

“Bayern’s successes serve as an extra motivation to return to the pitch and contribute to it. I have had my fair share of injuries, but this one was quite the blow. You lose motivation a bit and need to get everything back on track again.

“I hope things continue as they are going now. My only goal is to make sure I am still fit come December with a smile on my face.”

He is favourite to beat WBO light middleweight champion Smith, 28, when they meet on Saturday.

“I need tests like this because I need a bit of fear in me to win,” the Liverpudlian told BBC Sport.

“I need that fear factor in training otherwise I might get beat by someone I should never lose against, all because I couldn’t get up in the morning.

“I don’t want that to happen, so this fear I have in training will bring the best out of me when I face Alvarez.”

Smith, who is unbeaten in 24 contests, won the WBO belt when he defeated USA fighter John Thompson in Manchester last October.

He believes that victory on Saturday will establish him as a major force in world boxing, and that this was why he told his promoter Frank Warren that he wanted the fight.

“I’m one win away from being a superstar,” he said.

“This kind of fight is one I’ve asked for since I won the title. I could’ve kept kidding the public, kept taking money off Frank and said: ‘I’m not ready to step up yet. Keep on giving me easy fights.’

“But as soon as I became world champion and they gave me the WBO belt, I’ve wanted to fight the big names ever since. I wanted to fight guys like Shane Moseley, Miguel Cotto and Alvarez – and now I have my chance.”

Alvarez, the former WBC middleweight champion, has been fighting since the age of 15, and demonstrated his punching power during his emphatic victory over Khan.

But Smith said: “In my frame of mind, I’m not going in that ring as the underdog and I’m not calling it an upset because I know I’m good enough to beat him.

“I will look for the knockout, because that’s the way I fight. I want to get in there, break him down and stop him. And when I win and my hand is raised, I’ll say to all those people that doubted me: ‘I told you so.’”

Robben Takes Caution Over Comeback

Featured Image

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben is not getting carried away by the preparation for his comeback, but is keeping his calm and being cautious.

The Netherlands international sustained a groin injury during preseason and missed the start of the bundesliga season, but has started training with the team.

He realises he is not there just yet, though, and is taking things one step at a time.

“You can train for yourself as much as you want, but now the part where I join the squad comes again,” Robben told Bayern TV. “We are taking things one day at a time.

Mino Raiola : Mario Balotelli Better Our Of Italy

Featured Image

Mino Raiola has revealed he didn’t want Mario Balotelli to return to Italy this summer as he feared there would be too many distractions for his client there.

The former Liverpool striker was linked with moves to Chievo Verona, Napoli and Palermo following his release from Anfield, but opted to join French side Nice on a two-year deal.

And it’s a decision his agent Raiola has revealed was a calculated one.

“I didn’t want him to play again in Italy,” Raiola told Radio CRC. “It would have been an alibi for him.

“I didn’t want to give him any more excuses that would allow him to continue not doing good things. Mario is bounded to Napoli. He has a daughter there.”

Emmanuel Adebayor Set  To Join Lyon

Featured Image

Emmanuel Adebayor is on the verge of joining Lyon, according to the MailOnline.
The former Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester City striker has been without a club since he was released by Crystal Palace in June.
The 32-year-old signed a short-term deal at Selhurst Park in January but became a free-agent after scoring just one goal in 15 appearances for the south London club.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas says they are close to signing ‘an experienced and ambitious’ attacker, while Adebayor is flying to France with a view to signing.
A move to Ligue 1 would represent a return for Adebayor to the country where he began his professional career with Metz
The 32-year-old first came to England when he left Monaco for Arsenal in 2006. Adebayor played 142 games for the Emirates Stadium club, scoring 62 goals – a return that persuaded Manchester City to shell out £25million for his services in 2009.

Lyon have taken six points from their opening four matches this season. Seven-time French champions, they were runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain last term and began their Champions League campaign this week with a 3-0 victory over Dinamo Zagreb.

Gareth Bale’s New Contract To Include €500 Million Release Clause

Featured Image

Real Madrid are set to scupper Manchester United’s hopes of signing Gareth Bale by inserting a release clause worth a staggering €500m in a new contract at the Bernabeu.

The new deal will also see the Welshman’s wages rise in line with top-earners Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, in recognition of his increased influence at Real.

The Guardian claim Bale is already in talks with Real over extending his stay in Madrid, with the European champions keen to keep him for the duration of his elite career.

As part of the measures being taken to keep Bale in Madrid, club president Florentino Perez has held talks with Bale’s representatives about a €500m [£427m] release clause, which would price United out of the market despite their large financial spending power. Given that Real do not want to sell Bale, the prospect of him moving to Old Trafford appears highly unlikely if a new deal is announced.

Such figures like the one being discussed over Bale’s buy-out clause are not an unknown to Real, with Perez previously confirming that Ronaldo’s fee stands at €1bn, the highest of any footballer worldwide.

In coming here in three or four weeks are coming the best football players ever with LS [Luis Suarez] and Neymar and Barcelona and we have to enjoy it. Keane said he “wouldn’t like to mess with” Guardiola after some of the tough decisions he’s made in a perfect start at Manchester City

Speaking on ITV following Man City’s impressive 4-0 performance against Borussia Moenchengladbach, Keane hailed the new Spanish manager’s influence so soon at the Etihad.

Keane says he admires Guardiola’s bold decisions to decide strong characters in the club such as Joe Hart and Yaya Toure weren’t part of his plans and act on it

“He said he’s a challenging coach – doesn’t look like he messes about,” he added.

“I wouldn’t like to mess with him.

“Two coaches in Manchester. Mourinho reckons he’s the special one, to me this guy is.”

It’s not all good news for Guardiola, whose side has the only perfect Premier League record of four wins from four matches so far this season, with history not proving kind. But that could all change, says Keane.

“We’ve seen City have good stats before and they take their foot off the gas a little bit, but I don’t think it will happen under this guy.”

Manchester City Manager Pep Guardiola admitted he was left in awe of ‘special’ striker Sergio Aguero after his second hat-trick of the season steered Manchester City to an emphatic victory over Borussia Monchengladbach in their Champions League Group C opener.
Manchester City swept aside the Germans 4-0 in their delayed clash at the Etihad Stadium.
City have now won seven in succession since Guardiola took charge in the summer, while Aguero – who will miss the next two matches as he completes a domestic suspension – has scored nine in just five appearances.
Kelechi Iheanacho grabbed the other goal late on for Manchester City

And the Manchester City Boss Guardiola was full of praise for the red-hot hitman
“Sergio is one of the best, no doubts about that. He has a special quality in the box. He’s a special player,” the City boss said after the final whistle.
“I never won before against this coach and he always creates a lot of problems for my team but we created a really good performance, except for 10-15 minutes in the first half.”
