Making ‘Africa Rising’ A Reality In Nigeria – Muhammadu Buhari

Making ‘Africa Rising’ A Reality In Nigeria – Muhammadu Buhari

Until a few years ago, Africa Rising was a dominant theme in conversations about the global economy. That enthusiasm has since cooled, so that in newsrooms and think tanks and conference panels, “Africa Rising!” has given way to a more questioning “Africa Rising?”

While some of that pessimism may be justified, we do not have the luxury of distracting ourselves with lamentations about our current circumstances. Instead of hoping for commodity prices to rise, African countries should seize the opportunities that these times present – not least here at today’s U.S.-Africa Business Forum – to lay a foundation for the kind of economic growth that transforms the lives of our people.

One of our biggest challenges during the boom years was that we failed to convert the benefits of high commodity prices into more jobs and significant improvements in standards of living. Hence the great debate, during those years, about how to ensure that the growth became “inclusive.”

Now that we are face to face with the vulnerabilities somehow hidden during the years of plenty, we should turn away from the unhelpful habits of the past and chart a new course. Since I signed the 2016 budget into law in May, Nigeria’s Ministry of Finance has released more than 400 billion naira for infrastructure spending – more than the total amount spent in 2015.

In the face of dwindling oil revenues, we are turning to debt. We have begun raising a $1 billion Eurobond, our first in three years. We are also raising debt from the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the Chinese Ex-Im Bank and other development finance partners.

Unlike in the past, when borrowed funds were frittered away on unproductive ventures, we will ensure their investment in the revival of stalled road, rail, power and port projects, and in agricultural initiatives that will significantly boost domestic production of food. For far too long we have under-invested in infrastructure – the most critical element for creating sustainable economic growth. The net effect: an avoidably high cost of doing business in Nigeria.

But even more important than what the government is able to spend is the limitless investment potential of the private sector. This is why one of our main priorities is creating an environment in which private-sector capital can thrive. We are in particular using Public-Private Partnership models to support game-changing private-sector projects in power, refining, gas transportation and fertiliser production.

We are also putting in place measures to ensure that monies intended to revamp our infrastructure do not end up in the pockets of corrupt officials and their collaborators. Already we are investigating the theft of several billion dollars in public funds by the previous administration. We are not only bringing these corrupt officials to justice, we are also setting up systems to make it impossible for such a grievous abuse of public trust to happen again. And of course, we are as committed to playing by the rule of law as we are to accounting for every naira and recovering them for our treasury. These were funds meant to build roads and railway lines and hospitals and schools, and to equip our military – which has for the last seven years been fighting one of the deadliest terrorist groups in the world.

In that regard, we are already seeing the positive results of our anti-corruption efforts. Long starved of both materiel and morale by the corruption in the military’s upper echelons, our reinvigorated troops have now put Boko Haram permanently on the back foot. Some of the more than two million persons displaced by Boko Haram have started returning to their homes. Just last week, the people of Nigeria’s North-East celebrated their first incident-free Eid in years.

Our troops have rescued thousands of men, women and children trapped in areas held by Boko Haram. To meet their urgent humanitarian needs, we are working with the United Nations and other partners to provide food, medical help and shelter. We will strive to ensure that no victim is left behind, including the 219 Chibok girls who have, since their abduction in April 2014, served as a global symbol of the war against Boko Haram and a reminder of the horrors that it has inflicted on innocent Nigerians.

Even though the times are still dire, our economic recovery plan is already showing positive results. Investment’s share in gross domestic product is at its highest since 2010. Inflation is slowing; manufacturing confidence is rising. People are seeing and seizing opportunities to make money catering to the needs of Africa’s most populous country. Finally, our Social Investment Programme – the most ambitious in Nigeria’s history – will kick off this month. In its first year it will provide cash transfers to one million of our poorest people, hot meals to five million primary school children, cheap loans to more than one million artisans and traders, and job opportunities in healthcare, agriculture and software and hardware development for half a million young people.

The journey ahead remains long and difficult. Our double-digit inflation, currency turmoil and downgraded ratings will not vanish overnight. We also know that the current recession is partly driven by the production outages in Nigeria’s Delta region, and we are confident that growth will accelerate as problems in that region are resolved.

But the real story here is not the challenges, which are all too visible, but the opportunities. We have learned the necessary lessons. We will ensure that Nigeria does not slip back into a lazy and dangerous dependence on the price of crude oil. We will continue to insist on transparency and accountability in the use of government funds. And we will build an economy that prioritises the ease of doing business and investing, and that thrives on the entrepreneurial energy and ingenuity of our people.

To achieve these objectives, Nigeria needs robust and reliable partnerships such as we have with the United States. This is why I value the Commercial and Investment Policy Dialogue that we have just launched, and which we shall announce at today’s U.S.-Africa Business Forum.

The months ahead will show not only that Nigeria is on the rise, but that this “Rising” is real and lasting – one that touches not just the statistical databases, but the lives of the people who elected us to deliver positive change.

NBA: Should OKC Trade For Rudy Gay As A Durant Replacement?

Featured Image

A couple days ago, Rudy Gay told the Sacramento Kings management that he would not be resigning with the team and would opt for Free Agency in 2017.

Gay wanting out of the Kings isn’t really a surprise as its been widely reported that the forward isn’t happy with his situation on the court. From being the go-to player in his time at the Memphis Grizzlies to playing second fiddle to DeMarcus Cousins in Sacramento.

That normally wouldn’t be a huge problem if it didn’t affect his style so much. Rudy Gay is a slasher-type forward, drives in and plays in the paint. In a team with Cousins however, he has been forced to become a shooter. This is because Cousins owns the lane every game. Gay is forced to take more jump shots and that’s not ideal for a player with his style.

Rudy Gay to the Thunder — Good or bad?

Rudy who turns 31 next summer averaged 17.2 points per game last season. This is his lowest in the last three years and this is looking like his last chance for a big pay day. Now should the Thunder take the chance and trade for him before the season starts?

OKC have a big Kevin Durant-shaped hole that might be impossible to fill. But with Russell Westbrook’s ability maybe all they need is a decent short term running mate. At least just till next summer when they can target their superstar signing. If rumors are to be believed, they have identified that person as Rudy Gay.

What would the Thunder have to give up for the 6ft 8inch forward? Rumors swirling say Kyle Singler, Anthony Morrow and maybe a first round pick might work. In my opinion this would be a good move for both parties, what do you think?

Gundogan Could Return To BVB In Future

Featured Image

Ilkay Gundogan has stated he could return to Borusssia Dortmund in the nearest future. The midfielder has made a blitzing start to his time at City.

The 25-year old sealed a four-year contract move to Manchester City from Dortmund back in June.

Following knee surgery that saw him miss Euro 2016, Gundogan had to wait until last week to make his City debut – a 4-0 rout of Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League.

A first goal followed in Saturday’s 4-0 Premier League win over Bournemouth and Gundogan wants to prove himself away from Dortmund before considering any potential return to the Bundesliga.

“If it was the case in the next one or two years, I would probably not be happy about it,” he told Sport Bild.

“Because it would probably mean that I have failed or not developed myself.

“If I’m 29 or 30, I do not know if [Dortmund would] still want me. Basically, I would not exclude the possibility, but now I have other big targets.”

Inter Milan Ready To Sell Marcelo Brozovic

Featured Image

Inter Milan are ready to sell Premier League target Marcelo Brozovic, according to Italian website Calciomecato.

Chelsea and Tottenham were both interested in his services over the summer and the Serie A club could now be willing to part ways with the Croatia international who has hardly featured under new boss Franck De Boer.

Inter Milan are reportedly ready to sell Marcelo Brozovic for £17million.

The Croatian was heavily linked with a move away from the San Siro in the summer, but he ended up staying put.

The 23-year-old has struggled to impress under new boss Frank de Boer and he has paid just 20 minutes of Serie A football this season.

As a result, Inter are ready to cash in on Brozovic if any club offers around £17m in the upcoming transfer window.

Alan Smith : Lucas Perez Gives Arsenal ‘A New Option’

Featured Image

Lucas Perez will provide Arsenal with a vital extra attacking option, according to former Gunners striker Alan Smith.

Perez scored his first and second goals for the club in Tuesday’s night’s 4-0 win at Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup.

“It was good to see him do well and it was good to see him causing damage through the middle,” he said.

“The goals will certainly boost his morale. [Alexis] Sanchez has been playing as a false nine, so Perez definitely gives them another option.

“It’s a contrast to what they had already and that’s what they needed. He might be a late developer but he’s a good option for Arsene Wenger.”

Wenger himself praised Lucas’ contribution – even if he did highlight the Spaniard’s apparent over-reliance on his left foot.

determined. He uses well his left foot – a bit too much in my taste. He doesn’t use his right enough. Overall he’s like all the left-footed players, you know.

“But I like his second goal because he has shown not only technique but determination and fight for the ball and finishing and I like that. The part he played in the goal of [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain shows his awareness of other people and it is intelligent play.”

Mauricio Pochettino : Marcus Edwards Reminds Me Of Lionel Messi

Featured Image

Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham teenager Marcus Edwards reminds him of a young Lionel Messi but insists the winger has a long way to go to fulfil his potential.

Edwards is one of a handful of Spurs youngsters set to be given a chance in the EFL Cup third round against Gillingham on Wednesday but none have created as much excitement as the 17-year-old.

A left-footed attacking midfielder, with a low centre of gravity and lightning quick feet, Edwards is considered one of the brightest talents in his age group, having represented England at under-16, under-17 and under-18 levels.

“The qualities – it’s only looks, his body and the way that he plays – remember a little bit from the beginning of Messi,” Pochettino said.

“He is a very good prospect and potentially he can be a top player, but we need to be patient and tell him that he has a lot of talent, enough talent to be a top player, a great player. But now it’s how he builds his future, that’s very important. And it’s our responsibility to tell him.”

Edwards joined Tottenham’s academy aged eight and there was a feeling of relief when he signed his first professional contract in August, with some fearing he might be snatched by rival clubs.

Sunderland Tried Desperately To Sign Napoli’s Rafael Cabral To Solve Goalkeeper Crisis

Featured Image

Sunderland tried ‘several times’ to sign Napoli goalkeeper Rafael Cabral on a loan deal, according to Italian website Gazza Mercato.

The stopper is back-up to former Liverpool ‘keeper Pepe Reina in Serie A, with the player’s agent Paulo Affonso also confirming that a late deal could not be agreed.

“Of the formal interests there were three: one here in Brazil, a great team even if not successful, then in Europe, Sunderland and Espanyol. There was not enough time with the English club, who had lost its goalkeeper to injury,” he told Italian outlet Calcio Napoli 24.

“This was 48 hours before the close of the transfer market, there was not enough time to close such a transaction, either to borrow or outright.”

Gabriel Jesus : Guardiola’s Phone Call Made Me Sign For Manchester City

Featured Image

Gabriel Jesus says his “desire to learn” was the reason why he chose Manchester City over a host of other leading European clubs.

The 19-year-old from Sao Paulo cost City £27m, and he will join his new club in January of next year when he will battle for a first-team spot with the Premier League leaders.

He told The Guardian: “The presence of Guardiola as manager of City, and the fact that it is a great club, were very important factors in my final decision.

“Guardiola’s phone call was a huge part of me deciding to go there. It made me realise that I’d love to work with him.

“I don’t know him personally but he made me feel very safe about his project. It was a complicated decision but, in the end, my desire to learn won.”
Jesus, who plays his club football with Palmeiras, was part of the Brazil side that claimed Olympic gold in Rio last month, and has since made his senior debut for the national team.

Ahead of his move to England in the New Year, he added: “I prefer playing as a left winger rather than a striker, but I’m willing to play in either position.

“I’d like to think I’m a versatile player. But I will listen to the manager’s opinion and advice in order to improve and adapt as fast as I possibly can.”

Nice President Jean-Pierre Rivere Feels Sorry For Hatem Ben Arfa’s PSG situation

Featured Image

Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere has said he feels sorry for Hatem Ben Arfa, who has failed to make an impact at PSG after his summer move.

After a turbulent time at Newcastle, the winger shone during his time at Nice which sealed a move to the Ligue 1 champions, but hasn’t been able to replicate his form so far.

“I have a great affection for Hatem. He is a boy I like because he did some great things at the club, and on the human level. I’m sorry for him for this. I want to say, ‘hang on, do not give up’. It will come because he has real talent,” Rivere told French broadcaster L’Equipe.

His team-mates Thiago Motta and Adrien Rabiot have implored Hatem Ben Arfa to remain patient and wait for his chance to shine at Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG won 3-0 at home to Dijon in Ligue 1 on Tuesday, with head coach Unai Emery leaving Ben Arfa out of the matchday squad for the third game in succession.

The playmaker has completed 90 minutes only once this this season, in the Trophee des Champions, and both Motta and Rabiot understand it must be a difficult situation for the 29-year-old.

“I’m glad to see a player of his quality in the squad,” Motta told RMC. “We are a lot of players and it’s not easy for the coach to make his choice.

“For Hatem, the advice I can give him is to continue working. He is a great player, he demonstrated that last year and he will get opportunities.

Scores Dead As Boko Haram Fighters And Soldiers Clash In Fatori

Scores of Boko Haram fighters and soldiers attached to the Joint Multinational Task Force (MNJTF) have been reportedly killed in a ‘fierce’ clash at Mallam Fatori in Borno state on Tuesday, September 20.

According to Associated Press, the Islamic extremists on Tuesday said they killed more than 40 troops from a multinational force in an attack on a convoy in northeast Nigeria – an allegation that remains unverified.

AP wrote: “The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) West Africa Province annihilated “a convoy of the African Coalition Crusader forces” in the town of Malam Fatori, the SITE Intelligence Group reported, translating an ISIS communique posted on social media. There was no way to independently verify the claim and no word from Nigeria’s military late Tuesday night.”

“Eighteen people were killed Sunday and Monday when insurgents ambushed another convoy, gunned down Christians leaving a Sunday church service and beheaded a village head and his son.”

On the other hand, the Nigerian Army confirmed the clash in a statement issued by its public relations officer, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman on Wednesday morning.

According to him, the battle, which featured air operations, led to the rout of Boko Haram terrorists.

But while the troops were consolidating on the success of the operation, members of the fundamentalist sect reinforced around the border with Niger Republic; the resulting encounter led to the killing of many Nigerian soldiers, said SaharaReporters.

The statement read: “As part of Operation GAMA AIKI, troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE and Multinational Joint Task Force captured Mallam Fatori in northernmost part of Borno State after a fierce battle closely covered by air operations.

Schools were also shut down and students, who had just resumed from the long vacation, were asked to return home, after the incident, which occurred around 9am and was accompanied by a heavy vibration.

Speaking on the incident to The Punch, a resident of the community, Ayuba  Nok, described the Tuesday incident as louder than the earlier ones.

He said, “Today’s tremor was very loud. It was louder than the previous ones. Some schools were forced to close. They sent their students back home.

“Mallam Maude School, LEA Central Primary School and Sabzuro Primary School were some of the schools which were forced to close as a result of the sound of the tremor. They were afraid that something worse might happen.

“The heavy vibration of the tremor happened around 9 am today. It also occurred on Monday around 3am. The sound of Monday’s tremor was not as loud and devastating as the one of this morning.

“The Chairman, Mr. Ben Kure, is saying that people should be calm and stay where they are. But, the people are already frightened and they are in shock.

“When the incident happened again today, many of us who were thinking otherwise before decided to leave the town, especially the women and children. This is because we don’t know probably the whole town may sink when another one happens. And the government is not doing anything for now to evacuate people.”

Also speaking on the incident, the Head of Geography Department, Kaduna State University, Dr. Idowu Abbas, called on the federal government to intervene through a possible evacuation as the constant incident of earth tremor in Kwoi town might lead to a major earthquake someday.

He said, “It is unfortunate that the tremor happened but it is not unusual. This is because it can happen anywhere and at any time as long as there is movement underneath the earth surface. It can happen anywhere, it is just unfortunate that it happened in Kwoi.

“The tremor could be a signal of a bigger incident in Kwoi. And it still depends on what happens within the earth surface. I think the Nigerian Space, Research and Development Agency is already looking into that.  Honestly speaking earth tremor is a small earth quake, the major earth quake can come.”
