Man Granted Bail for N550,000 After Comitting N500,000 Fraud

Featured Image

An Abuja Court on Tuesday granted 24-year-old Emmanuel Ogbonna, a bail of N550,000, for allegedly committing fraud.

The young Emmanuel defrauding a woman of N500,000 after impersonating a Senegalese tailor. He was arraigned on a 10-count charge that included cheating, assembling for purpose of committing brigandage, abetting commission of offence, abduction, wrongful confinement to extort property, wrongful restraint, impersonation and giving false information.

The prosecutor for the case, Umoh Inah, told the court that the complainant, one Mary Edet of Katampe, Abuja, reported the case at Wuye Police Station on September 23.

According to him, sometime in June 2014, she boarded a taxi being driven by Emmanuel Ogbonna from Jabi Garage in Abuja with three other men (Emeka, Nnadi and Matthias) who were later discovered to be accomplices in the act but are currently at large. All three men were posing as innocent passengers as well.

According to Inah, the defendant and the other men fraudulently collected N200,000 from Ms. Edet and subsequently collected another N300,000 from her, totalling N500,000.

The defendant claimed to be a Senegalese tailor and told the woman that he would supply laptops and Blackberry phones to her but failed to do so. The woman boarded the defendant’s taxi again on September 23 from Berger to Life Camp, Abuja, and recognised the defendant. The defendant and his members noticed this and diverted to Wuye District with the intent to abduct her. The woman raised an alarm; the defendant was arrested while other members fled,” the prosecutor said.

The defendant pleaded not guilty while the case was adjourned to November 17 for hearing.

Banner sued Wayne and Young Money in July 2015 over unpaid royalties with a default judgement awarding him more than $160,000 after Young Money failed to respond to the case.

He said the label owed him for production he did on “La La” and “Pussy Monster,” both songs on Wayne’s  ‘Tha Carter III’ album as well as “Streets Is Watching,” which was featured on the 2009 Young Money compilation album ‘We Are Young Money’.

According to documents, because Young Money Entertainment never responded to the suit, a judge issued a default judgment that will give Banner a payment of $164,303.19, which includes interest.

Lil Wayne still has his own $51 million lawsuit against Birdman and Cash Money in court right now. So at least we’re thankful one case has been solved.

The Nigerian Senate has on Tuesday rejected the proposed sale of national asset by the President Muhammadu Buhari led government.

MUST READ: National Asset: To Sell Or Not To Sell?

The decision was agreed on at the resumed plenary after extensive deliberation in Abuja.

It would be recalled, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, had last week in his address to lawmakers suggested that the executive should raise capital from the sale of the nation’s assets and other sources to shore up reserves.

However, the federal lawmaker today passed a recommendation opposing the sale of government’s assets.

The lawmakers further ratified a recommendation that the National Assembly should amend Section 162 of the Constitution to give legal backing to the executive to save money for times of economic slump?

The proposed sale of the national by the Buhari administration has been met with a chorus of approval from a segment of the cognoscenti in the country, while many other prominent persons and unions have gone against it – arguing that previous sales barely helped the nation’s economy.

National Asset: To Sell Or Not To Sell?

Featured Image

National Asset: To Sell or Not to Sell?, By Samuel Diminas

Nigeria’s economy is in decline following the downward trend in crude oil prices beginning in July 2014. By the end of Q2 2016, the country slipped into recession, following consecutive negative GDP growth in the first and second quarters of the year. Low oil prices, exacerbated by militant attacks on oil and gas facilities in Nigeria’s oil-producing Niger Delta, a lack of competent fiscal measures and adverse macroeconomic policies, amongst other factors, have combined to make a bad case worse. Nigerians unanimously agree that the country is faced with the urgent task to mitigate a growing recession, and ultimately guide the economy back to growth; the strategy to achieve this is the subject of diverse opinion.

This piece was written by Samuel Diminas. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

The National Economic Council (NEC) recently recommended the sale of state-owned assets to raise much-needed revenues. The Senate President and Nigeria’s businessman, Aliko Dangote, have both supported this view. However, most wholly state-owned asset have almost been run aground, making the literal interpretation of the proposal a reasonable one. But wholly state-owned asset, like the only three refineries in the country, a steel plant, amongst others, which the country would benefit from privatising or even outright sale are not the asset in focus.

The state-owned asset proposed for sale are government-owned interests in joint ventures with oil and gas companies and the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), which are the primary non-tax revenue generating asset for the country.

The begging question is: Should Nigerian shares in oil and gas asset be sold? We answer ‘Yes and No.’

‘Yes, Sell’: The sale of several oil and gas asset would benefit the Nigerian economy in the mid to long term. All commercial asset in which the state has a controlling and operating interest should be scaled-down. These include asset held by the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), the exploration and production subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Competent and efficient operations of several of those asset would lead to an increase in production from the respective fields, which in turn would translate to more national revenues. Many of these fields are currently capped or under-producing.

National asset under the NNPC joint venture (JV) arrangements with the IOCs should also be scaled down. The NNPC owns 55 percent of each JV with oil and gas companies holding the remaining 45 percent (there are slight variations). With these asset, the NNPC reserves the right to become an operator, but a Joint Operating Agreement (JOA) is signed which sets the guidelines for running the operations of the field, with one of the partners designated the operator. All parties are required to share in the cost of operation. Unfortunately, the NNPC is rarely able to meet its funding obligations, and one wonders why in the first place anyone expected the NNPC to be able to do so. This arrangement has also created a loophole for massive graft and an inexplicable waste of government funds at the NNPC through cash calls.

The economics of the JV assets would be greatly enhanced if the state ownership were reduced well below the statutory 55 percent, to between 10 to 20 percent depending on the specific economic conditions of individual fields. The optimal operation of these fields would provide requisite revenue through other means, including Petroleum Profit Tax, Equity Oil (without cash calls based on 10 to 20 percent carry and cost recovery models), Royalty, etc. Any strategy that optimises production from Nigerian fields would generate more revenues for the Federal Government, better so if the NNPC is removed from the equation.

Amongst Nigeria’s deep-water blocks, there are a few with oil and gas discoveries but are considered non-commercial for development under current economic terms. In a couple of these fields, a reduction in the state’s statutory interest of 50 percent held by the NNPC, has the potential to tip the economics of scale towards commercial viability even under current oil prices. Developing just two (2) of these fields would add approximately one hundred and fifty thousand barrels per day (150K bpd) of secure crude oil production within the next four to five years.

The capital and operating expenditure required for the development of two of these fields exceed $10 billion. While the NNPC owns 50 percent of these undeveloped blocks, it is unable to contribute its share of 50 percent of the required investment for development. Developing these fields require the investors or operators to fund 100 percent of the investment up to first oil strike, and depend on long-term production cost recovery fiscal-terms, invariably condemning these fields to non-commercial status.

In the cases mentioned above in deep-water assets, the NNPC owns 50 percent of the blocks that do not generate income or economic activity. Thus the economic benefit to the state is zero. In these blocks, NNPC divestment, applied along with strategic incentives could lead to commercial viability. Development of these fields would generate billions of dollars in economic activity for local businesses, providing a multiplier effect and increase taxable income from service providers. As long as the assets are operational, there are several avenues for revenues to flow into government coffers from these fields; these include Petroleum Tax, Equity Oil, and Corporate Income Tax for all associated service providers to business activities deriving from the operations of the fields.

As for state interests in pipeline infrastructure, one wonders why the state retains these asset. Selling these asset would free the state of scarce resources expended in maintaining them. To optimise the benefit from relinquishing these asset through sales, legislation would be required to make oil and gas companies account for production at the wellhead rather than at export terminals.

If oil and gas companies were made accountable to pay Petroleum Tax, Equity Oil and Royalties on the volume of oil produced at the wellhead, companies would be more responsible towards eliminating pipeline breach and its accompanying oil theft. With the availability of modern pipeline technology, it is curious that Nigeria still grapples with crude oil theft from pipelines, a lot of which are intertwined and explained away as part of the actions of vandals and militant attacks.

‘No Sale’: The country’s 49 percent interest in the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) should not be contemplated for sale. It is Nigeria’s single highest revenue generating investment. A consortium of private oil and gas corporations own majority shares of the NLNG (51 percent). They operate and make management and investment decisions, making the NLNG a global model for successful State/Public–Private partnership.

The reasons put forward by the proponents for the sale of state-owned shares in the NLNG is the need to raise capital for fiscal stimulus towards achieving the implementation of the 2016 budget. In the first place, the proposed objective is not tenable. Nigeria’s 49 percent shares in the LNG cannot be sold and successfully closed on, with and funds received in the bank within the next 18 months.

In the case of the NLNG, due diligence, process formulation, board and corporate resolutions/approvals, etc., would take more than a year, and this is just the process preceding a formal approval of all shareholders for the commencement of divestment. The estimated timeline does not take into account public opposition led by unions and host communities against the sale of the asset.

The partners in the NLNG would also have the right of first refusal on any proposed sale, and negotiations between political interests and that of the Majority Private Shareholders would raise legal issues that would take some time to straighten out.

In the past five years, annual revenue from the LNG to Nigeria has been between $1.5 to $2.5 billion. Applying a simple valuation model, taking into account current market conditions and an estimated potential growth of 25 percent over the next ten years, the present value of Nigeria’s interest in the LNG is between $13.8 and $23 billion.

This amount cannot be banked in cash in a sale transaction within one year under current market conditions. In consideration of political risk, an astute investor would spread out payment at a highly discounted value for as long as possible, considering a sale could be rescinded by future governments, as was the case with the sale of Nigerian state-owned refineries in 2007.

The NLNG is a great investment for Nigeria; this benefit is not optimised because of the structure of the NNPC, which holds the shares of the asset on behalf of Nigeria. Revenues from Nigeria’s shares in the LNG have to pass through the NNPC, which is wholly owned by the state, and the mismanagement of the dividends occurs at this point. The NNPC has become more of a liability than an asset to the country. Dealing with this and other related issues, require legislation.

There is no justifiable long-term benefit in selling Nigeria’s shares in the LNG, a quick sale as proposed is not feasible. There is also no realistic path to raising funds for Nigeria’s 2016 budget through oil and gas asset sales at the end of 2016; it is also unlikely that this can be achieved even for the 2017 budget.

For Nigeria’s shares in the NLNG, it is ‘no sale.’

He opens the song with the line “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that bitch famous” and stops right after the lyric to address the roaring crowd.

During his first performance of the song, Kanye directed the crowd to sing along to the lyric about Swift and when they did he asked the DJ to start the song over again saying “I need to hear that loud in Nashville, I need to hear that so loud in Nashville.

Disney Consider Buying Twitter

Featured Image

It’s been reported that Google are looking to purchase Twitter and now they could be facing some competition from Disney if reports are to be believed.

It was first reported on Monday that Disney was considering joining the growing list of potential suitors for the social networking company. It’ll be joining a list that is said to already include Salesforce Inc, Microsoft and Google.

Disney already owns ABC and ESPN and is the only media company rumored to be eyeing the social network.

Disney may buy Twitter

CNBC reported on Monday that a Twitter sale could happen in as soon as 30 to 45 days.

Though one problem with this acquisition would be that Twitter has an image problem, and that might harm Disney’s clean reputation and penchant for tightfisted control of its properties. Twitter has had well-publicized struggles controlling users who post racist, homophobic or sexist content. Also, Twitter has become known as a tool for terrorist groups such as ISIS. These groups use the network to recruit people to their causes.

However the company and Twitter already have a link . Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has been on the Disney board since 2013.

Gameiro: I Picked Atletico Over Barcelona

Kevin Gameiro has revealed he had the opportunity of joining Barcelona, but opted for Atletico.

The striker was heavily linked with a move to the Catalan club, but ended up signing a €32 million deal with Atleti.

The forward, who has scored twice in six league games for Atletico, said he always knew he wanted to be at the Vicente Calderon.

“There was the possibility of going to Barcelona,” Gameiro told Cadena COPE.

“But in my head it was clear I wanted to go to Atletico. When Atleti contacted me, it was clear.”

Gameiro said game time would have been difficult at Barca, with Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar ahead of him.

He also believes he is better suited to Atletico, who were chasing Chelsea striker Diego Costa before signing Gameiro.

“El Cholo [coach Diego Simeone] phoned me and told me he wanted Diego Costa, but it was very difficult and I was the other option,”

He added: “Now I’m in Madrid and that’s the main thing.”

Atletico are unbeaten to start their LaLiga campaign, sitting third in the table – two points behind leaders and city rivals Real Madrid.

Anthony: I’ve Never Played With Someone Like Rose

Featured Image

The New York Knicks worked furiously during trade season, bringing in the likes of Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Brandon Jennings and Courtney Love.

We do hope the addition of these pro-ballers to their roster gives them the result they hope for. And at the Knicks’ media day, Carmelo Anthony pointed out that’s he has never played alongside someone like Rose.

“I’ve never played alongside a guy like Derrick,” Anthony said. “I’ve played alongside other point guards, different style, different type of point guards. To play alongside an explosive guy like Derrick, someone who can pick the pace up, who can push the pace throughout the course of the game, someone who’s a threat at that position — I think for me, the only thing that I can do is go out there and play basketball and enjoy playing basketball again and having fun with the game.

“I’m excited. I haven’t felt like this in a long time.”

Here’s Anthony on Joakim Noah, Brandon Jennings and Courtney Lee, the other new faces on the roster:

“Joakim, he’s a character. He’s very intense, very emotional, and you can see that with his workouts, you can see that in the gym, you can see that playing pickup, just him in the weight room working. You can see the focus that these guys have.

A guy who nobody really speaks about is Courtney Lee. I think he’s going to be a great addition to this team, a guy who comes in and does little things, does multiple things on the basketball court that a lot of people don’t talk about.

And then we have another guy, Brandon Jennings; his focus right now is to win, is to play good basketball and to help us lead this team. He’s focused and everybody’s focused. The focus level is an all-time high.”

Paul Pierce To Retire From NBA After 2016-17 Season

Featured Image

Youth is key in basketball and when you feel you can’t compete, you retire and enjoy from the sidelines. Paul Pierce wants one last season, before calling it quits.

We had Bryant retiring at the end of last season, then Tim Duncan followed, then Kevin Garnett. Next season, LA Clippers forward and former Celtics man leads the way.

Pierce who will be 39 by October, was not decided on returning for the 2016-17 season. But unfinished play-off business with the Blazers stayed his decision, as he wants to try for one more ring.

“This is it, my final season,” He said. “It’s time to move on from the game of basketball. Just like any difficult decision, I think you’ve got to be at peace with yourself. I’m at peace with retiring, but I’ve got one more ride left. One more season. One more opportunity.”

“I think why not give it one more shot, especially the way we went out of the playoffs, the injuries,” Pierce said at Clippers media day Monday. “Obviously, you’ve got to be good, you’ve got to be lucky, but I just want to just give it one more shot.

“Like I said, to win a championship here for the Los Angeles Clippers would be monumental, and if I can be a part of that, that’s something I thought about, and that’s something that drove me from August, starting in August on.”

Clippers coach Doc Rivers addressed Pierce’s decision to make this season his last as an NBA player.

“Paul has meant a lot to me, obviously,” said Rivers, who won an NBA title with Pierce in Boston in 2008. “When you win a title with someone, just like him and KG [Kevin Garnett] and the whole group, you’re connected with that person, those people for the rest of your lives, and you should be.”

Earlier this month, Rivers said Pierce was on the fence about returning for another season but that he believed Pierce has something left in the tank.

Pierce played the first 15 seasons of his career in Boston, nine of them for Rivers.

The Dangote Industries Limited 17 billion-dollar refinery project will create over 300,000 direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians by the first quarter of 2019, the Chief Operating Officer, Mr Olakunle Alake said on Monday.

This he said, during an interview with pressmen in Lagos on Monday, adding that the refinery, petrochemicals and fertiliser plants will be in one location.

Alake also declared that the project would be the single largest stream in the world.

He said: “The refinery and fertiliser projects will create job opportunities for the communities and Nigerians when it becomes operational. It will have a refining capacity of about 650,000 barrels of crude a day.’’

The Chief Operating Officer also assured that the project would help reduce the price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) in the country and save money spent on importation.

He further explained that the project would help diversify Nigeria’s economy, optimise government revenue and wean Nigeria from relying solely on oil.

He continued: “By the time we finish our gas pipeline, it will be able to generate about 12,000 mega watt which can be exported to other African countries. We will have the capacity to store four billion litres of products and load 2,680 trucks per day. The project will aid the country with about 7.5 billion dollars forex savings on importation.

“It will also generate five billion dollars forex earnings from savings and another 5.5 billion dollars export earnings,’’ he said. Alake gave assurance that there would be markets for the refined products, saying that only three countries in Africa had effective and functional refineries, while others imported. Alake said the projects would help the country save five billion dollars on oil importation when it became operational in 2019.

“By the time we complete this project, there will be opportunity to take on agriculture and say bye to poverty because there will be jobs; no sector has more job potential than agriculture. Though the project is an ambitious one but when completed it will give Nigeria a new economic direction in its quest for economic diversification.

Alake however said that access to foreign exchange posed serious challenges to the projects.

“We aim to complete the projects within the time frame to assist in easing the forex problem. We appeal to the Federal Government to support these private initiatives by providing funding for the projects.

“However, government through the Bank of Industry schemes has given us a credit facility of N50 billion to develop the fertiliser plant. “We have also gotten another N75 billion approval for the refinery, which we have not yet accessed,’’ Alake said.

Later, on that same day, the terrorists ambushed a military convoy near Bama, 70 kilometers southeast of Maiduguri, the statement said. An officer, three soldiers and three insurgents died.

In the video, Shekau taunted parents of the more than 200 Chibok schoolgirls who were kidnapped in 2014, saying they will see their daughters again only if the government swaps them for detained extremist leaders.

“To the people of Chibok: You have not seen the worst yet,” Shekau says, ending with gales of laughter.

However, the Nigeria’s military called the video “the handiwork of a mentally sick and unstable mind.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has declared that his government will only negotiate with Boko Haram terrorists when their ‘true leaders come out and identify with his government.’

This disclosure was made during an interview granted to VOA last week during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Buhari said: “I gave directives on three different occasions and I am not ready to go beyond this unless the leaders of Boko Haram come out in the open and say that they are leaders of Boko Haram.”

“Then I will be ready to talk to them but not [to] somebody coming to tell me that they are bringing one person or two people today and that they are leaders of Boko Haram.”

His statement is coming on the heels of a leadership tussle between the long-time yet ousted leader of the sect, Abubakar Shekau and the former spokesman, Abu Musab al-Barnawi – the Islamic State approved ‘numero uno’.

Buhari also said the frustration over the inability to liberate the Chibok girls needs to be put in perspective, adding that his government would ensure that the schoolgirls are reunited with their parents and then returned to school.

On the Niger Delta Avengers, the president stated that his government will negotiate with them if they are open to it, but cautioned that he is fully prepared to continue the military campaign to its conclusion.

Buhari further griped that the militants in the Niger Delta region were not only causing security issues but also hindering economic and development progress in the country.

He, however, said: “If they are not ready for compromise, so be it. We are ready for them.”

On the ongoing problem of corruption of Nigeria, he said:

“We have to investigate, confirm before arresting people.”

“We have to observe or follow due process before we prosecute them. This is what is wasting our time. Irrespective of this problem, we were able to recover a lot of money both in Nigerian currency and foreign currency.”

The senator reminded the minister that an earlier directive issued against the activities of herdsmen within the city had been ignored and a drastic action must be taken to end the menace.

Melaye said: “Honourable Minister, Senate as an institution is not happy at how Fulani herdsmen continue to move their cows across the city centre, which we are aware you have given directive against that some time ago.”

He called on the minister to order the capture and slaughter of straying cows with a huge fine placed on their owners.

“From now, get knives and ask your men to slaughter cows found in the capital city or prosecute herdsmen seen with cows in the city centre with a fine of N50, 000 per cow. This order must be carried out,” he added.

The son of Oba Musiliu Olipede, the Olorile of Itori Oke Egba Land, Ogun State, 29-year old Jamiu Olipede, has been killed by thugs over a land dispute.

The incident occurred at the Federal Housing Estate in the Alagbado area of Lagos State. Explaining how it happened, Oba Olipede said his son called him on the phone and said some people came to the house and told him to leave the house as they had won a case in court against the FHA over the land.

Its been reported that after calling Jamiu out, the thugs who were supposedly out to enforce a court judgement which had given them a portion of land in the estate shot Jamiu and hacked him to death on the spot.

The thugs were led by men identified as Shola Oyeloye a.k.a Sholebo, Bature and Kosoko Saheed. “The men were violent and told my son to pack out or they would kill him. The Federal Housing Authorities sold the land to my son. So, there was no need to argue with the land grabbers. But they brought hoodlums to kill my son.” The Oba said.

A landlord in the estate revealed that the land grabbers had earlier threatened to evict him as well and other residents from their apartments. “That was on September 1, 2016. They were led by one pastor who claimed that they got a court judgment and that I and some other residents should leave our apartments. They disconnected the power supply to our apartments. I reported the harassment to the police at the Alagbado division. The Divisional Police Officer invited them to his office and asked them to produce court documents to back their claims; but they could not.

Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer SP Dolapo Badmos revealed that a manhunt was underway to catch and arrest the Prince’s killers. “The victim was killed by some people, led by one Adebayo. Miami Heat done with Chris Bosh

We feel that, based on the last exam, that his Heat career is probably over” Riley added. When he was asked whether it would mean the end of Bosh’s NBA career, the Heat president said that would depend on Bosh himself.

This would mean the final piece of the famed Miami Big Three has fallen. The team lost Lebron James to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014 through free agency. They also lost Dwyane Wade to the Chicago Bulls this summer also through free agency.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said now is time to move forward with the 19 other players on the Heat’s preseason roster. “I’m going to prepare for this group right now” he said. “But there’s going to continue to be changes, hopefully not as big of an impact as thisThe other 19 players that are going to training camp, my focus will be on them. That does not take away my feelings on C.B”
