PhD Truck Drivers And The Urgency Of Now, By Okey Ndibe

Last week was a rather sobering one for Nigeria. The country marked its 56th anniversary, an altogether dour affair. Margaret Emefiele, wife of Nigeria’s Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, was kidnapped and then rescued. President Muhammadu Buhari spoke to the Nigerian youth and served notice that he intends to continue blaming his predecessors—especially the immediate past one—for the country’s dismal situation. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo gave his own speech, again to the youth, and advocated an end to the blame game. Mr. Buhari gave another speech, on October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day, and couldn’t seem to decide whether to blow hot or cold on the militancy in the Niger Delta.

This piece was written by Okey Ndibe. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

Let’s begin with the Independence anniversary. In his national broadcast, President Buhari said, “Today, 1st October is a day of celebration for us Nigerians. On this day, 56 years ago our people achieved the most important of all human desires—freedom and independence. We should all therefore give thanks and pray for our founding fathers without whose efforts and toil we would not reap the bounties of today.”

On social media, many Nigerians, myself included, had a grimmer take. We would not use the word “celebrate,” viewing it as a stretch. On Facebook and Twitter, I wondered, “What does one say about a 56-year old bumbler?” Then, dredging up hope, I urged all Nigerians to “work harder to steady our doddering giant of a country!”

One or two commentators voiced a stubborn hope, but the majority could muster no glimmer of such sentiment. One wrote a terse comment: “Keep hope alive…The prayer of losers!” Another described Nigeria as “a designed failure,” adding the country was bound to fail “no matter the amount of hard work it receives.” There was even the cringe-worthy suggestion that we should beg the British to return and “rule us”!

Whatever side of the divide one occupies, there’s little question that Nigeria has for fifty-six years been a dispiriting experiment. The late novelist Chinua Achebe wrote famously that Nigeria developed a tragic knack for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. It’s as if the country were trapped—to borrow the words of Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka—in “the recurrent cycle of human stupidity.”

It used to be fashionable to blame the British for Nigeria’s omnibus travails. For sure, the British have much to account for in the way they cobbled together more than four hundred different ethnicities into a geopolitical collectivity. The deft hand of British colonial policy, dividing the “natives” in order to rule them, left a legacy that continues to plague Nigeria even till today.

Even so, I believe even the most irreverent anti-colonial polemicists now recognise how tiresome it is to persist in blaming the English for Nigeria’s every ache and pain. In the close to six decades since we achieved “Independence,” Nigerians have failed to define the terms of their engagement. We fought a brutal war in which at least two million people perished—in order to maintain the sanctity of the British-fangled country. Yet, those lives were wasted in vain, for we have yet to take seriously the task of inspiriting the Nigerian space with meaning and values. We have, so far, postponed if not altogether ignored the task of deciding what it means, at bottom, to be a Nigerian citizen.

That’s why President Buhari’s speech last Saturday—like his predecessors’—was a harvest of platitudes, bereft of passion and an animating vision. On the rise of Niger Delta militancy, Mr. Buhari asked, “What sense is there to damage a gas line as a result of which many towns in the country including their own town or village is put in darkness as a result? What logic is there in blowing up an export pipeline and as a result income to your state and local governments and consequently their ability to provide services to your own people is reduced?”

On one level, such seemingly self-destructive action would seem absurd. However, the absurdity begins to make perfect sense in the context of Nigeria’s historical experience, marked by mindlessly predatory behaviour by the country’s elite. There is no question that the militants’ actions, consisting in blowing up oil facilities, are criminal. Yet, the perpetrators of those criminal deeds ought to be seen for who they are: victims of a deeper, Nigeria-made injustice. That injustice consists in the parasitical greed of the Nigerian elite—yes, some of them from the oil-rich Niger Delta. Over several decades, these unproductive leeches stole and hoarded the country’s assets. In a fashion reminiscent of the behaviour of some characters in Obinkaram Echewa’s absurdist yarn, “How Tables Came To Umu Madu,” Nigeria’s contemptible elite made a sport of eating for others. You could actually say their voracious gluttony amounted to eating others.

If Mr. Buhari is truly bewildered that militants should blow up oil infrastructure in their neighbourhood, thereby abetting the impoverishment of their own region, then I suggest that the president lives in a bubble, disconnected from the grim realities of life in the Niger Delta and much of the country. Nigeria has, unwittingly, consecrated an ethos where state violence (the violence deployed by the privileged few) has begotten mutations of resistant violence. In fact, by instituting violence as its preferred currency of communication, the Nigerian state has encouraged oppressed groups to conclude that their mastery of the idiom of violence offers them the best odds of wresting any concessions from their country.

Even when the country’s earnings from oil exports were robust, the vast majority of Nigerians hardly saw any bump in their fortunes. If they wished to eat well, they often had to angle for a political appointment. Or they registered tithe-harvesting churches. Or—if they had the nerve—they took to armed robbery or the even more lucrative business of kidnapping people for ransom. Imagine the chilling effect on potential local and foreign investors of last week’s kidnap of Mrs. Emefiele—despite her complement of police escorts.

I have relatives who graduated from university more than a decade ago, and yet have found no steady employment. They are reduced to the indignity of eking out a living as stylish mendicants. Last week, former President Obasanjo told students at Baptist Boys High School, Abeokuta, that unemployment in Nigeria was “a time bomb.” To illustrate the depth of the crisis, he shared an anecdote from Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote. When Mr. Dangote’s firm advertised a position for truck drivers, there were six Nigerian PhD holders in the pool of applicants!

One hopes President Buhari comprehends the explosive consequences of that kind of situation. Nigeria is a breeding ground for citizens so dehumanised, so ground to the dust that they would not hesitate to blow things up if they had the means. These seething would-be militants are the victims of a country whose elite, for close to sixty years, has recognised no boundaries when it came to embezzlement of public funds.

Mr. Buhari continues to invoke his personal virtues, his ascetic mindset, and his commitment to change. And he continues to blame his predecessors. But those attributes—self-assessment, rhetoric and the blame game—won’t suffice to address Nigeria’s gargantuan crises. Does he have it in him to outline a bold vision for Nigeria’s new direction? Does he realise that he’s steering a floundering ship, headed for the rocks—unless he finds a way to enlist every hand to be on deck, to use that hackneyed but useful cliché.

Los Angeles-based fashion retailer Junk Food Clothing is releasing a clothing collection by Wiz Khalifa and his 3-year-old son Sebastian.

The clothing line would be called BASH, after Sebastian’s nickname and it is a variety of shirts, sweatshirts, a bomber jacket, and accessories. Wiz said that the collection was a natural extension of his and his son’s shared sense of style.

I shop with him a lot, and we match often,” Khalifa explained. “He’s definitely got my sense of style. Everybody tells me how fresh he usually looks, from store-bought stuff, so we’re making his own stuff now.”

The clothes will be inspired by Sebastian’s favorite activities according to Khalifa. “I just really wanted it to feel personal to him, so when he sees it, he gets excited. He’s three years old, so he might not understand the concept of having his own clothing line. But the fact that all of his favorite things are all over his clothes, it makes him feel special; it makes him entertained by what he’s wearing.”

The clothes would go for between $35 to $50 for kids and $45 to $80 for men, with the exception of the slightly pricier bomber that will be going for $150 and $250, respectively. The BASH By Junk Food capsule collection will launch October 15.

Drake Postpones Summer Sixteen Tour Over Ankle Injury

Featured Image

An ankle injury has forced Drake to push back three stops on his ongoing Summer Sixteen tour.

He made the decision so as to allow his ankle heal, and revealed the decision on his OVO blog on Wednesday.

“We are over 50 shows in and I have done everything to power through my recent ankle injury and leave it all out there on the stage every night. I hate to be told I can’t do something, but under doctor’s orders to allow me time to recuperate, I am forced to postpone the intense three shows in a row in cities which have only ever shown me unconditional support,” he wrote.

Anthony Joshua Sure He Can Beat Klitschko

Featured Image

Anthony Joshua is sure of a world title fight against Wladmir Klitschko, and is confident the fight will happen.

Promoter Eddie Hearn is looking to set up the fight between the IBF heavyweight champion and Klitschko.

Joshua won the title against Charles Martin in April and defended it successfully against Breazeale, but admits a fight with the Ukraine boxer will be on a different plane.

He told Sky Sports News HQ: “It would be amazing for boxing in general, for British boxing, for the people that have wanted to see a general step up in class.

“It’s an interesting fight. It’s definitely one people have got interested in just by mentioning it. It ticks all the boxes for me at this present time. I think there’s a few fights the world of boxing wants.

“A heavyweight fight with a former champion and a current champion is a fight that definitely ticks that box that will get people’s hairs off their skin.

“There’s a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes. We’re dealing with a legendary sportsman in Klitschko and a current champion so there’s egos on the table.

“We’ve got to put that aside and hopefully we can definitely get this deal done. Eddie does a good job and he’s a fantastic promoter.

“I’ve got to look at my team, my team are guiding me and they’ve got to be happy with everything as well.

“I’m confident Eddie’s sending over the right messages and getting the right things in place for this fight to take place.”

Joshua, 26, added: “I’m hoping for November because it has been mentioned. There’s been people booking hotels and changing schedules around.

“If it means that we push it back another two weeks to December, it’s no problem with me because the fight will come, the fight will go. As long as the fight happens, it will be one I’ll be happy about.

“You have to do a lot of learning in the gym, of course, but when I fight someone like Klitschko, I have to make sure everything I’ve learned over the years comes into play.

Man Impregnates 13-Year Old Daughter For Ritual

Featured Image

Hafizu Isyaku, a 40-year-old electronics dealer allegedly impregnated his 13-year-old daughter to satisfy the requirements of his cult group for a ritual purpose.

The man’s wife and mother of the teenage girl, Maryam Manta, explained to reporters at her Kabala Doki residence in Kaduna that the incident occurred at Tudun Wada, Maraba, near Abuja where she resided before relocating to Kaduna.

According to her, she got to know about her daughter’s pregnancy when she returned from a three-month journey, saying “When I returned from my journey where I went to see my parents, I noticed my daughter was sick and was behaving strangely. I didn’t suspect anything because my husband constantly gave her some concoctions to drink, claiming it was going to heal her. When the sickness persisted and I noticed my daughter had missed her period, I questioned and threatened her to tell me if she had any affair with any man. Eventually, she opened up to me that her father had been having carnal knowledge of her while I was away. When I confronted my husband, he cried and confessed joining a cult which mounted pressure on him to get his daughter pregnant and then abort it as a sacrifice. I became confused and wept profusely but when he promised to disassociate himself from the cult, I went together with him to the hospital where the pregnancy was aborted.”

She added that she also caught her husband having sex with her daughter even after he confessed. “I caught him red handed in the very act. I became heartbroken and absconded from his home in Maraba and returned to Kaduna with my six children. When I arrived Kaduna, I reported the issue to the District Head of Kabala Doki, Danlami Bawa, who invited my husband for some discussions.

She said she had filed a court case at the Sharia Magistrate court, Magajin-Gari in Kaduna for the full custody of her six children, alleging that Hafizu, her husband had constantly visited and threatened her and the children. “He wants to seize the children from me,” she alleged.

Czech Players Made To Train With Female Team After Sexist Remarks At Female Referee

Featured Image

Two Sparta Prague footballers have been made to train with the women’s team after they told a female assistant referee to stay in the kitchen.

Lukas Vacha and Tomas Koubek were condemned by the Czech FA chairman and Sparta Prague appointed them as ambassadors of the women’s team following comments they made against assistant referee Lucie Ratajova last Sunday against Zbrojovka Brno.

Referee Ratajova failed to notice a clear offside which led to a goal by Zbrojovka Brno in the 92nd minute of the game, causing Sparta to lose a 3-2 lead.

After the game Lukas Vacha tweeted the assistant referee’s photo with a caption which read “To the cooker”, while Tomas Koubek said in an interview after the game “In my opinion, women should stay at the stove and not officiate men’s football.”

Both players apologized on Monday but the Czech FA chairman, Miroslav Pelta, said their statements immediately after the match “are totally unacceptable”. “I would like to emphasise that women are and will be an important part of football and their presence in its structures and at the stands is important for football.” he said.

Sparta General Director Adam Kotalik, on behalf of the club released a statement saying  “As much as I understand that the boys were full of emotions after the finish of yesterday’s game, there are some boundaries that they can not cross in their statements. As well as serving as ambassadors of the team at the Uefa Women’s Champions League games they will both report to the boss of Sparta women’s teams Dusan Zovinec and will take part at some of the training sessions with one of our women’s team to see with their own eyes that the women can be skillful somewhere else than at the stove, too.”

The tennis star also believes WADA also targeted her to serve as examples to other athletes.

“It’s hard not to when the Tennis Federation asks for me to be banned for four years.”

“I think what it has certainly done is brought awareness that there are flaws in the system,” Sharapova said.

Robbie Brady Not ‘Sulking’ On Failed Premier League Move

Featured Image

Robbie Brady is refusing to dwell on missing out on a move to the Premier League in the summer.

There was reported interest from the top flight after the Norwich player impressed at Euro 2016, but a transfer never materialised.

“I think the fee was quite high that Norwich were after,” he said. “But nothing came of it in the end so that sort of stuff is out of my hands. You always want to know what’s going on, it’s good when things are going on that involve yourself. You want to know.

“There’s no sulking or any badness. It is what it is. I’m enjoying it, so it’s all good. I’ve seen people (sulk) in the past but you need to get on with it, it’s your job. You can only focus on the job you have in hand.

“I’ll try to do my best wherever I am. I want to do as well as I can. As soon as (the transfer window) closed, that was the end of it. You can’t dwell on it.”

Huddersfield Manager David Wagner To Snub Aston Villa

The Yorkshire Post say the Terriers are confident that their manager would stay and are “relaxed” over his future.

It is also reported that they would not welcome any approach from Villa or Derby.

This has alerted a host of top clubs, with Aston Villa believed to be keen on Wagner replacing Roberto Di Matteo following the Italian’s dismissal on Monday.

Arda Turan Hoping To End His Career At Barcelona

Featured Image

Arda Turan says he hopes to end his career with Barcelona after playing in all seven league games this season.

Turan has featured on a regular basis this season, however, scoring five times in 10 appearances for the Spanish champions

Turan, 29, joined Barca last year, and told Radyospor: “Barcelona are the best team in the world.

“I feel I belong to this jersey. If I’m needed for just one minute, I’ll play for just one minute. If I’m needed to stay on the bench then I’m going to stay on the bench.

“And I give everything I have when I’m in starting line-ups. My coach is always showing me that he’s pleased with me.

“I want to end my career at Barcelona.”

The midfielder will remain with Barca during the ongoing international break after being left out of Turkey’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Ukraine and Iceland.

Turan was dropped by head coach Fatih Terim after a disappointing Euro 2016 campaign but the 94-time international insists he is ready to answer his country’s call, if asked.

‘My purpose is always to help Turkish football,’ he said.

‘I promise to do everything in my power to serve that purpose. They open their arms and I’ll come, they don’t and I won’t.’

Hull City Owners Increase Takeover Asking Price To £120 Million

Featured Image

The price of Hull City has reportedly risen to £120m as four parties look to acquire the Premier League club.

The Hull Daily Mail report that the Allam family are not in a rush to sell and the price of the club has increased due to interest from several bidders.

It is also reported that any deal seems unlikely to happen before Christmas, which raises questions over Mike Phelan’s future.

Phelan has been in caretaker charge and is yet to sign a deal to make him full-time manager.

Sources have confirmed to the Mail that current owners the Allam family are looking at receiving the phenomenal amount for the club, around £40m more than the fee which was provisionally agreed in the summer with former bidder Peter Grieve and his American consortium in the wake of promotion to the Premier League.

A fourth serious bidder, again from the Far East, but with German connections, was reported yesterday to have made an approach to the club.

The Mail understands that while no formal offer has been made by the new party, negotiations have taken place taking the total of interested parties to four.

With the Dai family still intent on taking over the club following an initial agreement and down payment of £6m, Chinese American Chien Lee’s desire to complete a takeover still intact and Adam Pearson’s Hong Kong consortium also firmly in the race, the price of the club has inflated in the past month.

The Allam family appear in no rush to complete a sale despite suggestions last month by vice chairman Ehab Allam that his family had overseen their final game at the helm.

What was already a complicated sale has become increasingly difficult to resolve with bidders continuing to come forward.

It now seems unlikely any deal will go through before Christmas, placing further doubt over whether a decision can finally be made regarding the future of caretaker manager Mike Phelan.

Speaking before last week’s loss to Chelsea Phelan admitted the continued negotiations over the sale of the club were affecting his own discussions with the board, meaning the latest twist in an ongoing saga is unlikely to bring a swift resolution to his own future.

Celtic Have No Plans Of Selling Moussa Dembele

Featured Image

Celtic do not need to sell Moussa Dembele, according to major shareholder Dermot Desmond.

The 20-year-old has caught the eye with a string of fine performances since joining Celtic in the summer, reportedly attracting interest from around Europe.

Asked whether Celtic can keep Dembele, Desmond said: “I think so. Hopefully we can. They’re a team, they’re together, we don’t need to sell any players.

“Hopefully we can retain him but again our job is to have players that are wanted by other clubs in the Premier League and elsewhere.

“That will be an indication of the quality of footballers that we have.”

The Parkhead side’s largest shareholder once again reiterated his desire for the Hoops to move to England and insisted he still believes it will happen at some point – even though the English Football League recently rejected the latest proposals in their league reform plans.

The 72 EFL clubs held discussions on a proposed switch from three 24-team divisions to four 20-team ones.

The prospect of inviting the two Glasgow clubs and second string teams from the EPL sides to join a new league was overwhelmingly rejected.

Desmond added: ‘I think these doors are being closed all the time. Sometime it will be opened.

‘I feel confident that Celtic, and indeed Rangers, and Aberdeen, and some of the other clubs in Scotland should participate in a bigger British league.’

Oliver Burke : No Regrets Joining Red Bull Leipzig

Featured Image

Scotland international Oliver Burke says his desire to play first-team football was the reason behind his decision to turn down a move to the Premier League.

The 19-year-old winger became his country’s most expensive player in August by completing a £13m move from Nottingham Forest to RB Leipzig.

“I was going to visit Tottenham,” he told the Daily Mail. “But I said no because Leipzig showed enough care and attention to the little details.

“For a young man, I don’t want to go somewhere that is a big club and be thinking am I going to play? Am I going to progress? Or are they just going to stick me out on loan, which happens a lot at English clubs.

“You can only look at Chelsea, and see the amount of talent they have, but they’re all on loan, not getting used. You don’t feel wanted when you sign for a club, you’re there for two training sessions, and then they buy someone else in your position for double the amount.

“So it’s a no-brainer really. They made clear I was going to be a vital part of the team, which I have shown against Cologne and [Borussia] Dortmund. I don’t regret not going to the Premier League.”

Isco Claims He Never Considered Leaving Real Madrid Last Summer

Featured Image

Isco says he did not think about leaving Real Madrid in the summer.

The 24-year-old was linked with a move away from the Bernabeu due to a lack of playing time.

However, asked by Marca whether he considered leaving, he said: “Not really, I have two years left on my Real contract, the club said nothing and I never looked for anything to leave.”

“In the end, if I’m not the star man with (Carlo) Ancelotti, (Rafa) Benitez or Zidane, I will not be foolish and look for problems where there are none,” he said. “In the end, I’m responsible and that’s where I must improve.

“There are ups and downs and I won’t give up, I fight to the end and want to prove that I’m fit for Madrid.

“We are talking about the best players in the world, there is much competition and a line-up that is practically non-negotiable.

“I know it’s very difficult because of the competition, but I won’t give up. I work every day to demonstrate my abilities.”

Questioned about a possible renewal, he added: “I don’t know, the truth is that I have not yet thought about it, nor have they asked me to renew, so I am calm. I take it day by day, which is important.”

Alex Iwobi In Line For New Arsenal Contract

Featured Image

He only signed a new deal six months ago, but Alex Iwobi is reportedly set to pen another Arsenal contract in the coming months.

The 20-year-old has made a positive start to the season and, according to the Daily Mirror, has impressed the club’s hierarchy.

It is said that he will be rewarded with another pay rise and improved contract if he continues as he has started.

Starlet Iwobi signed an agreement worth £25,000-a-week in April but is now in line for a further extension, which underlines him becoming a fixture in the first team this season.

Iwobi has been one of Wenger’s best recent success stories and Arsenal want to tie him down for the long term and take him up to a good first-team salary.

Memphis Depay ‘Unhappy’  At Manchester United

Featured Image

Memphis Depay says he is not happy to remain at Manchester United if it means only having a supporting role.

The 22-year-old winger joined United from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2015, but has fallen out of favour, making just three sub appearances in the league this season.

“I am the same person and I know what I want,” Depay told Dutch newspaper Metro Nieuws. “A supporting role is not for me.

“I’m not a player who is happy with the fact that he is under contract with Manchester United. This is my dream club, but I want to play.”

Memphis revealed Mourinho’s arrival had raised the bar in training and was complimentary about the Portuguese’s coaching.

“The training sessions are going well, I’m sharp and fit, but that applies to everyone,” said Memphis. “The level has become higher. Jose Mourinho is a top coach.

“Mourinho has expressed his confidence in me. Personally, but also in the press.”

Mourinho said in August Memphis’ absence from the Southampton squad had left him feeling ‘sad’ him after the win.

“I arrive in the dressing room after the match and I was happy but then I become sad,” Mourinho explained. “Because I arrive there and all the other guys are there in their nice Paul Smith suit but not a tracksuit, not even playing, not even being on the bench.

“So when I look to Memphis, Carrick, Jones, all these guys I don’t select. I am desperate for September.”

REVEALED: Boko Haram Demanded N1.7 Trillion ‘Ransom’ To Free Chibok Girls

Featured Image

A startling revelation has emerged on how terror group Boko Haram demanded €5bn (about N1.7trillion) from the Federal Government as ransom for the release of the 219 schoolgirls that were abducted in 2014 in Chibok, Borno state.

The revelation was brought to light in a book, which was authored by Prof. John Paden from United States.

Author of the book, Prof. John Paden in a handshake with President Buhari as former heads of state Yakubu Gowon and Olusegun Obasanjo look on

The book, titled: “Muhammadu Buhari: The challenges of leadership in Nigeria”, which was presented to the public on Monday at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, stated clearly that President Buhari turned down the offer from Boko Haram.

Below is an excerpt from the book:

“An additional issue was the status of the Chibok girls. Secret negotiations had been held regarding an exchange of Boko Haram prisoners for the girls.

On several occasions, prisoners were taken to Maiduguri to facilitate an exchange. But these negotiations stalled when Boko Haram demanded a ransom of €5 billion for the girls.

“The dilemma for the DSS, which was handling the negotiations, was that a military assault to rescue the girls would almost certainly result in their deaths at the hands of their Boko Haram captors.

“But the Nigerian government was not going to accede to Boko Haram’s extra-ordinary demand for a vast sum of money which would no doubt be used to fund future attacks.

“One or two girls were able to escape their captors in May, but the rest remained captive and the impasse continued.

“The Chibok girls were not alone in their grim fate. Hundreds if not thousands, of persons had been captured by Boko Haram in the North-East. Buhari would need to continue degrading Boko Haram until he could tighten the noose around its Sambisa hideouts and bring a close end to this painful episode.”

I Won’t Disqualify Myself From Your Trial – CCT Judge Tells Saraki

The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), on Wednesday refused to consider an application filed by Senate President Bukola Saraki, in which he sought the tribunal chairman, Danladi Umar, to disqualify himself from further presiding over his trial.

The senate president is being tried over alleged corruption and false assets declaration.

In a motion filed on June 13, 2016, Saraki, had sought the tribunal’s order compelling its chairman to disqualify himself over allegation of a bias statement credited to him during the proceedings of June 7.

But in a ruling on the application, Mr Umar said he would have disqualified himself “but for the constraints placed on the Chairman by the Constitution of Nigeria that established the Code of Conduct Tribunal.”

Umar, while reading the ruling of the tribunal, said the affidavit of “concerned citizens” filed by Saraki to prove the allegation of bias against him was unknown to law.

His words: “It is our holding that the defendant/applicant’s allegation of bias is merely founded on conjecture.

“The allegation of bias is a serious issue and it is capable of destroying public confidence in the institution.

“The affidavit by the concerned citizens does not constitute a standard for proving such serious allegation.

“The tribunal upholds that the application of the applicant is not legally founded and it is hereby refused.”

The tribunal adjourned to November 7 for continuation of trial.

Three Years After, Baba Suwe Still Suffering From NDLEA Investigations

Featured Image

Popular Yoruba actor Baba Suwe hasn’t not recovered from his drug fiasco with the NDLEA.

Back in 2013, the actor was arrested and detained by the anti-drug body for reportedly carrying drugs. No drugs were however found, and the body was asked to pay a compensation of N25 million.

3 years later, the money hasn’t been paid, and Baba Suwe is no longer himself. Nollywood producer Yomi Fabiyi took to Instagram to provide an update on his situation.

He wrote:

“I am calling on all SENIOR COLLEAGUES in the entertainment world especially those close to Baba Suwe cos I don’t have everyone’s contact to please reachout to him asap. The torture done on him by NDLEA is vastly damaging his health at an alarming rate. He told me he no longer feel comfortable since that episode. Baba Suwe is a widower, he can hardly walk properly as I speak, let alone go to film. How will he feed and take care of the children aunty Moladun left behind?

Baba Suwe still battling NDLEA

“This is an A-List Entertainer and this conspiracy of silence gives me MENTAL AGONY on my part, I don’t want to speak when it may be too late, I won’t forgive myself. He told me when I visited him that he is innocent of the accusations and yet a LONG PIPE was inserted through his anus, he was detained for too long amongst other things just because he was randomly suspected like every normal person. In my opinion, only lazy, ill-trained, unfit and uncivilised officers torture in the name of investigation. Torture is criminal and sinful. If this accusation is found to be true by independent investigators, it shouldn’t go unpunished.

“The court asked NDLEA to pay him 25million for damages which is yet to be obeyed but to me an OPEN APOLOGY will placate him and illustrate some dignified and civil approach from a government agency that made him go through all that without coming up with a single proof after that prolonged detention and drama. He who assert MUST prove! NDLEA needs to restore public confidence by doing the needful on this matter.

“And until individuals and government agency begin to respect fundamental HUMAN RIGHT and enhance duty of care, the essence of Nigeria’s FREEDOM is far from been realistic. No malice is intended against NDLEA with this outcry, I just hope the leadership see this as a clarion call for getting it right and save the agency from sending an innocent person to an early grave whereby leaving his children to suffer unjustly. My humble take. Thank you. Yomi Fabiyi #JUSTICEFORBABASUWE #SAVEBABASUWE #SAYNOTOTORTURE”
