Liverpool 2 – 1 West Brom: Reds Sweep By Baggies With Ease

Featured Image

Liverpool recorded what was an easy three points as they beat West Bromwich Albion by two goals to one.

The goal they conceded however meant they wouldn’t be able to rise to the top of the table just yet. The Reds took the lead early, with Sadio Mane and Phillipe Coutinho finding the back of the net in the first half.

West Brom’s Gareth McAuley however scored a late volley that meant Arsenal remained ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.

Coutinho was instrumental for the Reds on the field, sparking the move that led to the first goal, before getting his own name on the score sheet in the 35th minute.

Perez: I Expected To Be Starting Regularly At Arsenal

Featured Image

Arsenal striker Lucas Perez appears disappointed at the bit role he is playing at the club, as he expected to be the go-to striker for the gunners.

The forward joined the premier league club in August for £17 million and has only played over a hour in the EPL since then.

With Alexis Sanchez impressing as Arsenal’s first-choice central striker, Perez is aware he will have to wait for his opportunity to shine.

“When I first arrived here I expected to have more of a starring role,” he told Onda Cero.

“The team-mates that are playing in my position are doing a great job. We have won seven games in a row and, at the end of the day, the coach wants what is best for the team.

“I had hoped to have more playing time, but what I have to do now is make the most of the opportunities I get.”

Conte: Chelsea Still Hurting From Last Season’s Failure

Featured Image

With Chelsea welcoming Mourinho to the Bridge for the first time this season, Conte insists the club still wears the scar from last season’s failed title defence.

The blues went from claiming the EPL trophy in 2014-15, to mounting a disastrous title defence that saw them flirt with relegation.

Mourinho was sacked in the process, with Chelsea eventually finishing 10th, something that still haunts Chelsea, according to Conte ahead of Manchester United’s visit on Sunday.

“When there are these types of season – very bad seasons, because we finished 10th in the table – it’s normal that something remains in the players,” said Conte.

“In their minds. In their heads. In this situation, the risk is to lose the confidence. For this reason, I continue to repeat: this new season for Chelsea is very important.

“Also, it’s very difficult because you must change what happened last season, and that’s not easy. The only way we have to change is to work, to work very hard, together with the players, the club and the fans. It won’t be easy to cancel a bad season like last season.”

”Tinubu Is An Experienced Politician, But A Bad Student Of History” – Aribisala

Featured Image

Columnist and social commentator, Femi Aribisala, has described a National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as an experienced politician who has a bad knowledge of history.

READ ALSO: All Government Institutions Are Corrupt – VP Osinbajo

In an interview with Saturday Punch, the iconoclastic pastor opened up on the alleged conspiracy against Tinubu by some Northern politicians within the APC.

When asked: What do you think about the alleged current travails and conspiracy against Tinubu by a suspected cabal in the North and the presidency?

His words: Tinubu is an experienced politician, but a bad student of history.  In 2011, he formed an alliance with Abubakar Atiku and the People Democratic Movement, who represents a more progressive part of the North, but could not prevail against the colossus of the PDP.  Therefore, in 2015, he entered into an alliance with Buhari and the core North, which has never even had any progressive pretensions.  There is nothing progressive about President Buhari.

Everything about the president’s politics was smoke and mirrors.  He commanded the support of a significant number of the Northern poor, in spite of the fact that there is absolutely nothing in his CV about advancing the interests of the poor.  He is a conservative politician opposed to any restructuring of Nigeria’s polity through a national conference.  His only claim to popular appeal is a questionable belief that he is anti-corruption.

It was only a matter of time before uneasy bed-fellows of the APC came to logger-heads.  Once the election was won, the APC started falling apart.  The PDP wing of the party conducted a coup and hijacked the National Assembly.  Now the organs of the party have been wrenched from Tinubu’s Action Congress of Nigeria.  As we get closer and closer to 2019, the fighting will become more vicious and more incendiary.  I don’t expect the APC to survive.

Aisha, Welcome To The Club Of Wailing Wailers

Featured Image

Aisha, Welcome To The Club Of Wailing Wailers, By Ahmed Oluwasanjo

Shortly after President Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in on May 29, 2015, two phrases became very popular in the Nigerian media and social media space. They are: “Witch-hunt” and “The wailing wailers”.

This piece was written by Ahmed Oluwasanjo. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Those who felt that Buhari was only on a mission to settle old political scores, using the anti-corruption campaign as a cover, labeled the Buhari-led government’s anti-corruption war a mere witch-hunt. Consequently, Mr. Femi Adesina, on his assumption of office as Special Adviser to the president on Media and Publicity, labelled those who held such view as “wailing wailers”.

The Room President Buhari Really Needs Now

Thanks to Mr. Adesina for bringing to the knowledge of those of us who were born many years after reggae maestro, Bob Marley and The Wailers released a debut album titled, The Wailing Wailers in 1965. No doubt, Mr. Adesina added one phrase to our political lexicon.

Like wildfire, the moment Mr. Adesina labeled Buhari traducers as “the wailing wailers,” the phrase gained wide usage in the Nigerian political landscape. At first, the label seemed quite fitting.

However, along the line, ardent supporters of Buhari – extremists who hold the view that the president could and would do no wrong – made it the official label for anyone, group or organisation that dared to criticise President Buhari, regardless of how strong and valid their views were.

This is undemocratic. Why should yesterday’s wailers become fanatical and irrational hailers the moment they have their own in power? In fact, failing to speak out against the anomalies they once criticised past governments for when the government they are supporting is repeating the same mistakes is sheer hypocrisy.

However, in spite of the intolerant and irrational nature of some fanatical Buharists, there are individuals, groups and media outfits that have not failed to speak out against the mess going on in the Buhari-led administration.

The Unaired Part Of Mrs Buhari’s Interview, By Jaafar Jaafar

With due respect to other media platforms, without minding being labelled as the media wing of the wailers, Premium Times and Sahara Reporters stand tall for their intermittent investigative exposés on the disconcerting anomalies of the change administration Nigerians voted for, a disappointing failure despite its proclaimed mantra of being a change from all that went before. Some of these include different stories unraveling corrupt elements in Buhari’s government, including the three different recruitment scandals in public institutions; the unfortunate plight of internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) starving to death in their camps due to the diversion of their provisions by some kleptomaniacs, etc.

Amplifying these stories, veteran columnists have objectively written on different occasions to criticise, correct and offer wise counsels to the government without minding being labelled. Unfortunately, spatial constraints retrain me from mentioning their names.

However, Buhari lovers – those who have eschewed common sense for sentiments, have automated responses to stories that reveal anomalies in the Buhari-led government. Their common arguments are: “The president cannot be everywhere to handle all matters”. “We cannot expect Buhari to fix the system overnight”. “Besides, where were you wailers criticising Buhari today when Goodluck Jonathan’s government messed up the system…”

Interestingly, sixteen months after President Buhari assumed office, the number of wailers has greatly increased, as the government appears to be too slow and lacking in direction. To make things worse, the wife of the president, Aisha Buhari, has publicly joined the wailing wailers’, blatantly complaining that her husband’s government has been hijacked. She said that if things continue the way they are, she might not support her husband in the forthcoming election.

I could imagine Mr. Adesina, the hawks in the Buhari government and the fanatical Buhari hailers on the streets squirming as they read the excerpt of her interview in the news.

‘My Wife Belongs To My Kitchen’ – Buhari Reacts To Aisha’s ‘Controversial’ BBC Interview

But why is Aisha wailing now?

Let’s face it: Where was she when children of politicians were given appointments in public institutions through the back door? Why couldn’t she wail on behalf of unemployed Nigerian youth who were not given a fair chance to apply for such appointments? Or does she feel that her advocacy for the appointment of IDPs – Internally Displaced Politicians – into her husband’s government is more important than advocating for fairness in recruitment into public institutions, which affects young Nigerians who contributed their energy, time and resources to her husband’s electoral success?

If I may probe further, had the Internally Displaced Politicians Aisha felt worked for her husband’s electoral success been appointed, would she be wailing? Why does she think that those she is advocating for are different from the hawks she claims have hijacked her husband’s government?

Unpacking President Buhari’s Perspective On Women

Politicians have always being the problem and not the solution in Nigeria. Besides, in a country of 180 million people, Aisha and Muhammadu Buhari cannot expect to know every appointee.

Somehow, Aisha’s stance is more political than altruistic. The difference, perhaps, is that she is conscious of the mass rebellion that looms should her husband fail. For this, I think history would be fair to her.

In time past, we had a first lady who collaborated with a cabal to keep the country running for months without a substantive president. There was another first lady who publicly admitted that her husband failed in his first tenure and therefore deserved to be given a second chance to repeat his failure. Perhaps, Aisha is proving to be different somehow.

Anyway, Aisha is highly welcomed to the wailers club.

Ahmed Oluwasanjo writes from Abuja.

Russia Announces Zabivaka The Wolf As Mascot For The 2018 World Cup

Featured Image
A wolf named Zabivaka has been chosen as the official mascot of the upcoming FIFA World Cup to be held in Russia in 2018 after a nationwide vote.
The vote was held across Russia over the course of a month, with the candidates being a wolf, a cat, and a tiger. At the end of the voting, Zabivaka was the clear winner as he garnered more than half of the total votes at 53 percent of the one million votes.

The mascot will make his debut at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, which will also be held in Russia.

Zabivaka was developed by student designer Ekaterina Bocharova, who described the wolf as the “youngest player on the squad, but you won’t find anyone faster, bolder, or more skillful with a football.”

Zabivaka, whose name means ‘the one who scores’ in Russian and is rooted in the verb ‘to score’ (zabivat) also reportedly has a rather distinct character.

According to the FIFA website, his personality traits include being charming, confident and social; he is a fair player and always fun to be around; and he likes to make other people laugh. He also wears special glasses he believes give him special targeting powers on the pitch.

Russia

Zabivaka’s selection was announced on Saturday on a Russian late-night television show, hosted by comedian and presenter Ivan Urgant. The show was attended by FIFA 2018 World Cup Local Organizing Committee Chairman Vitaly Mutko and former Brazilian footballer Ronaldo.

Obanikoro Appears Willing To Refund N785m Stolen Fund

Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, former Minister of State for Defence, appears willing to refund the money he allegedly collected from the Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA).

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is accusing the embattled senator of collecting N785 million from ONSA while in office.

However, there are strong indications that his close pals and associates are rallying around him to raise the funds as a first step to secure his bail.

Sources close the polity say Obanikoro is targeting N100 million as the first instalment of the refund.

A source, who pleaded anonymity, said: “The ex-minister has been cooperating with detectives and he appears willing to refund some cash out of the N785 million traced to Sylvan McNamara.

“I think his associates and friends have rallied around him, having discovered that the bulk of the cash from ONSA went to Fayose and Omisore.

“I think he might initially refund N100 million to get bail reprieve in order to prevail on others who benefited from the N785 million to repay the slush funds.

“The refund is one of the issues delaying the granting of bail to the ex-minister.”

All Government Institutions Are Corrupt – VP Osinbajo

Featured Image

Nigeria’s Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has stated that the current administration’s fight against corruption will touch every sector in the society because all government institutions in the country are corrupt.

The VP made the assertion on Friday at the 2016 convocation ceremony of the Afe Babalola University in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti state.

According to Osinbajo, re-orientation is key in the fight against corruption in the country.

His words: “I have a great respect for Chief Afe Babalola because of his stand against corruption. Sometimes in 2002, Chief Babalola argued the case for the establishment of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission where he let the court realise that corruption is the greatest problem of our nation.

“All the institutions of government, I mean the executive, legislature and the judiciary are corrupt. What we need is serious reorientation. That is why ABUAD is a great university because it teaches knowledge, character and morality. So, value reorientation is a key weapon to fight corruption.

“That is why the Federal Government is intervening, because if we refuse to act, every facet of the country will fail.  We must act fast and deal with the situation as quickly as possible.”

The vice president also urged the graduands to be honest and trustworthy, and to acquire skills beyond the scope of their disciplines.

He continued: “You must be trustworthy and honest apart from being skillful and resourceful to be able to make a great impact in the future ahead of you.”

“You must reflect on the values they have inculcated in you in the institution and be conscious of the fact that Nigeria, your country, must be great, which can be achieved with your contributions.”

Mourinho Not Worried About Chelsea Reception

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho says history with Chelsea will not stop him from doing his job, when United play the blues on Sunday.

The Portuguese manager is the most successful manager at the club, winning three EPL trophies over two spells in charge.

But while he admits that he is unsure what kind of reception he will get from the Blues’ faithful, his main concern is to get the job done for United.

“To say I care is not true because, to be honest, when I go to a football match, I do not focus on that. I focus on the game, I try to prepare myself for matches, so I cannot say that I care,” he told reporters.

“What can I expect? I don’t know. They can think about me and remember our great relationship and have a good reaction. They can look at me and say ‘for 90 minutes he is Man Utd manager and he’s playing against us so he is not somebody we like in this moment’.”

Mourinho, who was sacked by Chelsea in December 2015 after a calamitous start to the season which left the club hovering above the relegation places, insists that he will not be drawn into a war of words following the disappointing end to his second spell.

“Some managers, when they leave clubs, they like to wash their dirty clothes, which means they’d speak about what happened. They go back and speak and speak and speak,” he continued.

“I’m not that. I leave the clubs and I leave with a very good feeling, a feeling of I did everything to succeed, I gave everything to the club and I don’t like to go back and speak – especially about the bad things.

“I keep the good things – and, at Chelsea, I had so many good things, so many good things in terms of results, so many good things in friends that I have for life, an amazing empathy with the supporters.

“The supporters didn’t change their relationship with me because of last season – it was a couple of months of results – so I keep all these good memories and there are things that I don’t forget which I keep; I keep them for myself.”

But the Portuguese added that he and his United side must overlook the links that he has to Chelsea when Sunday afternoon comes around, just as he did when leading Inter to a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge in 2010.

“We have to try to forget it,” Mourinho declared. “We have to try to do the job. I played there with Inter and I tried to do my job.

“If you ask me, if my team score a goal, am I going to celebrate like a crazy kid? No. I think I can control emotionally that situation. Am I going to have any negative reaction if the crowd have something negative with me? No. I think, again, I have maturity enough to control that emotion and I have lots of respect.

“But what Man Utd fans can expect from me is in this moment more important and what Man Utd fans can expect from me is to play against Chelsea the same way I play against Fenerbahce, I play against Liverpool, I play against anyone because it’s my job.”

United head into the fixture in seventh place in the Premier League table, two points and two places behind Antonio Conte’s Chelsea.

Woman Stabs Fiance To Death With A Few Weeks To Their Wedding

Featured Image

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old lady, Abosede Omolare, for allegedly stabbing her fiance, Sadiq Dauda, to death during an argument.

The Public Relations Officer for the Ogun State Command, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi, told reporters in Abeokuta on Friday that the suspect was engaged to marry Dauda in December. He also said that the suspect committed the crime at Onirugba street in Ijebu-Ode on Tuesday and was arrested on the same day.

According to him, the incident followed a minor disagreement between Omolare and Dauda over allegations of mismanagement of funds from the gas business which the couple ran together. The suspect claimed that her late fiancé beat her up and sent her away and she only returned to the house because his mother promised to intervene.

Mr Oyeyemi said “She stated that immediately she got home, her fiance descended on her, beat her mercilessly and broke a bottle with which he threatened to stab her. She admitted that it was then she took a kitchen knife and stabbed him on the rib.” He added that Dauda, who was bleeding profusely, was carried to Igbeba Divisional Police Post in Ijebu-Ode and then rushed to the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital by policemen where he died on Wednesday.

The PRO said the case had been transferred to the Homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligent Department for further investigation.
