UTME: JAMB Seeks To Scrap Uniform Cut-Off Marks For Nigerian Institutions

Featured Image

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has called for a national debate on the propriety of cut-off marks, stating that institutions should be allowed to determine the kind of candidates they want – in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, made the assertion in a statement signed by the board’s Head, Media and Information, Fabian Benjamin, on Sunday in Lagos.

According to the statement,  a situation where universities, polytechnics and colleges of education are subjected to the same cut-off marks was no longer tenable because it prevented the institutions from admitting candidates of their choice.

The statement read: “The uniformity of cut-off marks doesn’t make any sense when colleges (of education) and polytechnics admit for national certificate of education and diplomas, while universities admit for degrees. Yet, we subject them to the same cut-off marks, thereby starving these tiers of institutions from admitting candidates who, if not engaged, may likely become easy prey to social vices.

“This means that if a University wants 250 as minimum cut-off marks, why not? And if another wants less so be it. If a Polytechnic like YABATECH (Yaba College of Technology) wants 250 as cut-off marks, let them admit and if Gboko Polytechnic in Benue State where I come from wants less than 200, let them admit.

“Institutions should be known for their individual quality and not collective standards. This will foster positive competition for the overall good of our tertiary institutions. It is critical for all notable stakeholders to rethink the issue of cut-off marks.

“I am calling for a national debate on the propriety of cut off marks; institutions should be allowed to determine the kind of candidates they want.”

11 People Have Been Arrested For Child Trafficking In Akwa Ibom

Featured Image

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested 11 persons suspected to be involved in child trafficking in the state.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Murtala Mani, on Friday said that members of a syndicate which specialized in the trafficking of babies were arrested by the anti-kidnapping unit of the Police. According to him, a woman, Comfort Edem, was arrested on October 13 following information that she had been running an illegal maternity home for the purpose of trading in children.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Cordelia Nwawe who was speaking in place of the commissioner said that the suspects sold the trafficked children at N450,000.

The police revealed that the traffickers went after pregnant teenagers and negotiated the price of the unborn children with them agreeing that once the babies were born, they would be handed over to them.

The Commissioner said, “Information at our disposal led to the interception of a syndicate which traffic babies in Akwa Ibom. On October 13, 2016, the anti-kidnapping of the Nigeria Police arm was able to intercept a woman who owns an illegal maternity home.

“She specializes in making sure that she takes in pregnant teenagers. Once the babies are born, those babies are sold and trafficked out of Akwa Ibom. We have intercepted her; she is in here in front of you.

“As a matter of fact, the girls had reliably informed us that this is not the first time they had sold their babies at the sum of N450,000”.

Mani also paraded another syndicate who sold children for N500,000. He explained that the police had been to rescue a two-month old girl who had been sold to a woman in Rivers State.

Chelsea 4 – 0 Manchester United: Mourinho Humbled On Stamford Bridge Return

Featured Image

Chelsea recorded a superb 4-0 victory as they hosted Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

It was Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho’s first match back as Stamford Bridge since he was sacked by Chelsea in December 2015.

Mourinho’s is Chelsea’s most successful manager ever, winning 7 trophies with the club, including 3 league titles.

The match started on the worst note possible for United, with Pedro scoring after just 30 seconds. Marcos Alonso clipped the ball forward to the Spanish forward, and an error from Chris Smalling allowed him to beat an on-rushing David De Gea and slot in to an empty post.

Gary Cahill made it 2-0 after, and second-half goals from Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante ensured a perfect evening for the Blues.

Mourinho said after the game: “It’s one of these days where you give the advantage to the opponent by doing nothing. They were defensively compact and defended well. We made incredible defensive mistakes and you pay for that.”

Man Kills Wife And Daughter In Abuja Because He Couldn’t Feed Them

Featured Image

A 40-year-old man from Okpoma village in Cross River State, Dominic Iyayi Ogar, has been arrested over the murder of his wife and their only daughter.

Ogar is alleged to have committed the act on October 8, 2016 in Mpape, Abuja. The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory Command, Mr. Mohammed Mustafa told reporters that Ogar, who slept with his 27-year-old wife, Omago and Blessing, their two-year-old daughter on the same bed, woke up in the middle of the night, took a knife and stabbed both of them to death.

The accused then carried both their corpses to a nearby nursery and primary school in the area; he allegedly wrote a small note and dropped it beside the corpses and then ran off to hide in his farm.

However, the crime was discovered when a neighbor, Destiny Onwusuaka, noticed a trail of blood that led to the door of the family house. When questioned, Onwusuaka said: “It was around 7am when I discovered stains of blood on the floor and followed the trail to the door of Ogar. When I looked into the room, I saw a pool of blood but I didn’t see the husband or the victims. It was later that I saw the two corpses where the husband dropped them. I shouted and called our neighbours. We then ran to the police to report what we saw. We started searching for the husband. It took four days before we found him and arrested him in his farm on October 11, 2016.”

Following the arrest of the suspect, the corpses of the deceased were moved to the mortuary of the National Hospital, Abuja.

At the Criminal Investigation Department of the FCT Police Command, where Ogar was detained he told reporters “I don’t have a job, I cannot feed my family, I can only feed myself, and God should forgive me for what I have done. I don’t know what came to my mind; it was frustration that led me to stab my wife and only daughter to enable me survive in life.”

The Police Commissioner said Ogar would soon be arraigned to face the murder charges.

NBA: Lebron James Says Teams Get Together To Try And Beat Him

Featured Image

According to Cleveland Cavaliers superstar, Lebron James, NBA teams acquire new players and change coaches because they want to beat him.

Despite being on two different teams, the 4-time MVP and 12-time All Star has made the NBA finals every year for the past six years being in the Eastern Conference so obviously teams must have knocking him and his team off that spot at the back of their minds.

In an interview with a Cleveland sports reporter, James said “I know teams switch and pick up new coaches or new players, and their whole goal is kind of they want to beat me”.

“It’s never just about me, but I always hear them saying we gotta beat LeBron. It’s not just me on the court, but I understand that teams get together in this conference and across the league to try to beat me.”

When the former No. 1 draft pick left the Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat in 2010, the team instantly became a title contender, while the Cavs fell way down to the bottom half of the conference. Four NBA finals and two championships later, he returned to the Cavaliers in 2014 and delivered the team their first NBA championship.

Maybe that’s what got the Warriors to go for Kevin Durant, who knows .

The Demons Of President Goodluck Jonathan – Sonala Olumhense

Featured Image

The Demons Of President Goodluck Jonathan – Sonala Olumhense

Few articles in print can be as troubling as “The Spiritual Side of Aso Villa,” published by former Nigeria presidential adviser Reuben Abati on October 14.

This piece was written by Sonala Olumhense and was published on The Punch. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Mr. Abati’s account portrays the Nigerian seat of power under Mr. Goodluck Jonathan as having being under spiritual bondage, and suggests that performance was impossible.

The situation was so bad under Mr. Jonathan that staff were always falling sick, according to the account.  Men routinely reported they had become impotent, and their wives comforted themselves with sex videos and toys.  Mysterious fires were common in homes of villa staff.

The Room President Buhari Really Needs Now

It was so bad that someone warned the writer that he was “coming to the villa using Lux soap, but that most people around the place always bathed in the morning with blood. Goat blood. Ram blood. Whatever animal blood…He said there were persons in the Villa walking upside down…”

A pastor told Abati the villa was full of evil spirits and too much human sacrifice.  Someone always died.  People “lost daughters and sons, brothers and uncles, mothers and fathers…”

Faulty presidential aircraft, one enduring a bird strike in Kenya.  In Norway, a helicopter bearing President Jonathan almost crashing.

Abati, who twice in the article claims not to be superstitious, fields far-reaching conclusions: “When Presidents make mistakes, they are probably victims of a force higher than what we can imagine…When the President makes a speech and he truly means well, the speech is interpreted wrongly by the public…”

The Unaired Part Of Mrs Buhari’s Interview, By Jaafar Jaafar

His most important one is probably this: “Should I become President of Nigeria tomorrow, I will build a new Presidential Villa: a Villa that will be dedicated to the all-conquering Almighty, and where powers and principalities cannot hold sway…in the United States, Presidents live like normal human beings. In Aso Villa, that is impossible…No Nigerian President should be in spiritual bondage because he belongs to all of us and to nobody.”

That last point seems to be an effort to make Nigerians accept that the squalid picture the writer paints of the Jonathan presidency applies to Muhammadu Buhari, who assumed power famously declaring that he belongs to everybody and to nobody.

Abati’s article’s should have been written in 2011, somewhere between June and November, that first half-year in office when he discovered it was impossible for Mr. Jonathan to succeed.  This is the import of his story.

Since neither he nor any of his so-called troubled colleagues found the strength to quit, his dissertation is laughable, at best.  A lot of Mr. Jonathan’s initiatives were well-received.  He did not run into trouble because they were poor.  The devil, pardon the imagery, was always in his failure to implement.

‘My Wife Belongs To My Kitchen’ – Buhari Reacts To Aisha’s ‘Controversial’ BBC Interview

The Freedom of Information Act, for instance, was one of his early, and celebrated efforts.  But in practice, neither he nor any of his senior officials honoured it.

Similarly, in July 2011, Mr. Jonathan announced an anti-corruption “war,” saying he would begin with a comprehensive audit of the finances of all Federal Government ministries, departments and agencies, with effect from 2007.  For four years thereafter, he never implemented it.

This was not new.  That year, I documented how Mr. Jonathan, in an effort to win the election, bathed every nook and corner of Nigeria with promises. Not only did he fulfil none of them, in November 2014 at the launch of his presidential campaign in Lagos, he lied that he had fulfilled ALL of them.

In February 2015, Abati himself, in response to The Economist’s dismissal of Mr. Jonathan’s re-election hopes, backed that position, claiming Mr. Jonathan had “worked very hard to fulfil all the major promises he made to them on assumption of office.”There is a comprehensive contradiction between the energies Mr. Jonathan and his staff spent in trying to remain in power and the claim that uncontrollable forces was preventing them from exercising that power.

The truth is that power is a strange aphrodisiac which lures the unwary into forgetting that its flip side is responsibility.  Ibrahim Babangida, Aso Rock’s first occupant, didn’t want to leave, neither did its most prominent occupiers so far: Sani Abacha and Olusegun Obasanjo.  Are we to take it that the same gremlins that encouraged them to underperform and to betray also insisted that they must be forced to leave?

Jonathan is known as Nigeria’s luckiest politician.  He virtually sneaked into the presidency, unnoticed.  But by his own admission, even as vice-president, he declared his assets in 2007 only because President Umaru Yar’Adua forced him.

And then he found in his hands presidential power, that is: the opportunity to transform his country forever.  What did Jonathan do with it?

“A colleague called me one day and told me a story about how a decision had been taken in the spiritual realm about the Nigerian government,” Abati writes.  “He talked about the spirit of error, and how every step taken by the administration would appear to the public like an error.”

Unpacking President Buhari’s Perspective On Women

Error?  Jonathan swore never to declare his assets. He didn’t give a damn. He conferred respectability on stealing.  He granted state pardon to the corruption ex-convict, Dipreye Alamieyeseigha.  He armed the National Security Adviser (NSA) with slush funds. Arrogant and deliberate howlers, obviously but in no wise spiritual.

Jonathan’s embrace of corruption enhanced the decay of our military.  The disaster of Chibok was magnified because the Jonathan government first chose to deny the abduction.  Was that supposed to appear to the public as though it was a wonderful decision misunderstood by the public?

Jonathan was not hampered by extraneous forces, but by a lack of vision, motivation and strength.  He ran a bazaar, not a responsible, responsive outfit.

For example, Doyin Okupe was appointed Special Adviser in 2012 because Abati himself was said to have demonstrated no ability to “defend” the First Lady from critics.  For that position, the former medical doctor explained last July that NSA Dasuki gave him N50m upon his appointment, another N50m in October 2014, and N10million monthly.  To do what, you wonder.

Okupe also said he had a staff of 23, of which about half had at least university graduate degrees.  How did one attack dog multiply so darkly and expensively?

People were sick in Aso Rock?  Sorry o!  But people are sick all over Nigeria, their miseries of diabetes and hypertension and cancer compounded by incompetent and malicious governance.  Unlike Aso Rock, they often lack diagnosis or treatment, and cannot travel to Germany.  Families are dying of hunger, and in road crashes, robberies and kidnappings.

Aisha, Welcome To The Club Of Wailing Wailers

Let us be clear: Bad governance is not a victimless crime.  It is a weapon of mass destruction.  Bad policies are bad policies, such as Buhari not identifying powerful looters and speedily prosecuting them.  Nigeria should not erupt in joy because he is trying to sell only two executive jets instead of at least five.

Leaders should not spend power on themselves and their inner circle, and when it is gone, attribute their failure to people who walked on their heads.  We like to cite the US, while conveniently forgetting that in that country, the licence Nigerian leaders take in Aso Rock would put the president in jail within one week.

And our people have a saying: If the man who slept indoors says he saw a ghost, what should the man who slept outdoors say?

This piece was written by Sonala Olumhense and was published on The Punch. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Boko Haram: Night Markets Resurface In Maiduguri 3 Years After Cessation

Featured Image

Night markets have resurfaced in Maiduguri, the economic hub and capital of Borno State, nearly three years after they ceased to exist due to Boko Haram insurgents’ attacks.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the markets, which disappeared in 2012, at the summit of Boko Haram insurgency in the state, started resurfacing a few months ago, following the gradual return of peace and the removal of military checkpoints by authorities.

A correspondent of the agency, who went to scout the city on Saturday night, noticed that there was large-scale trading in markets located in Bulumkutu, Wulari, Gomari, Gwange, Customs and other areas.

The commodities sold included fresh meat, fish, grains and other perishables.

Also, there were local tea sellers popularly called “maishayi”, bean cake sellers and even fried grasshopper sellers in some of the markets.

During interview, Ibrahim Yusuf, a meat seller at Customs night market, said the return of the market had brought great relief to his family.

He said: “we thank God that the markets have return; this allows us to operate here for some time in the evenings; it is a thing of joy for us who cannot afford to rent shops at the Monday market or Gamboru market.

“Our customers are mainly labourers who earn daily wages who usually pass through this market to buy food items for their families before heading home.”

Azealia Banks Apologizes To Zayn Malik, Begs For Collaboration

Featured Image

Controversial singer Azealia Banks has issued a very deep apology to singer Zayn Malik.

Banks had, on numerous occasions in the past, hit the the former One Direction singer with racist and transphobic jokes.

“There are no words that can fully express how sorry I am. Recent events have taught me the importance of taking accountability for one’s actions. I want and need to say I am sorry, I was wrong,” Banks said in an open letter.

“I reached out, on Twitter, to congratulate you on leaving One Direction and finding your own path. Many artists sell their souls to this business and sacrifice their happiness for a career; walking away took bravery, strength, formidable principles and a powerful sense of self-worth. I applaud you for this. After my tweets, you tweeted something completely unrelated to me and I mistook it for a personal attack.

“This set me off and I began a reckless and unacceptable rant; but every cloud has a silver lining and what happened has taught me that not everything is about me and not everything is directed at me.

“Thank-you for teaching me this, it is a lesson that I desperately needed to learn. As a black woman, in America, I sometimes forget that there are words and comments that hurt other communities. At times, I am so consumed by my own struggle, and the struggle of my race, that I forget to consider the hardships other minorities continue to endure.

“Coming from an ethnicity that is largely discriminated against does not warrant a license to use derogatory, abusive terminology nor does it give me the right to make hurtful remarks. I apologise not only to you, Zayn, but to all those I hurt and offended.”

Following the statement, she told fans that she’d love to work with him, asking for a collaboration.

She said:  “I definitely would love to collaborate with Zayn. From here, I watched the Naughty Boy thing and I have always seen where he’s going.

“He’s definitely helped him get that sound, that sound that’s different but still cool, very relevant but it’s different and it’s new and special – which is something I think I do very well.”

David Silva Faces Uncertain Future At Manchester City

Featured Image

Manchester City’s David Silva faces an uncertain future under Pep Guardiola, as he becomes the latest superstar coming under pressure in Guardiola’s City revolution.

The Spaniard is attempting to adapt to Guardiola’s demands for a high-press style and the ruthless boss has made it clear that no-one is safe at the Etihad, after omitting Silva from the starting line-up in the last two games.

Players once considered so untouchable that the club sacked Roberto Mancini in 2013 in order to avoid a dressing-room revolt are now coming under scrutiny as Guardiola decides if they are capable of delivering the style he wants.

Sergio Aguero’s reluctance to submit himself to the Catalan’s tactical plan has seen him axed from City’s starting line-up for the last two games.

Six of the seven players who are out of contract at the end of the season will not be offered new deals, with Toure, Pablo Zabaleta, Gael Clichy, Bacary Sagna, Jesus Navas and Willy Caballero leaving.

There is no way back for Hart and Nasri. Big-money flops Eliaquim Mangala and Wilfried Bony are also finished at the Etihad after being loaned out.

Everton Manager Ronald Koeman Lines Up Kevin Strootman As Gareth Barry Potential Replacement

Everton have lined up Kevin Strootman as a long-term replacement for Gareth Barry, The Mirror reports.

It is believed the Roma midfielder tops the shortlist of manager Ronald Koeman to replace Barry, who turns 36 in February.

Koeman has been impressed with Barry since taking over at Goodison Park and the midfield veteran has continued to be a first-team regular, starting all nine of Everton’s Premier League matches this season and scoring twice.

Strootman, ten years Barry’s junior, was on Louis Van Gaal’s radar during his reign at Manchester United.

The Dutchman, though, has struggled with injuries and has consequently failed to make a success of his stay in Serie A due to two serious knee problems.

Manchester City Preparing £20 Million Bid For Cesc Fabregas

Featured Image

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is reportedly set to make a £20m move as he looks to sign Cesc Fabregas in January from Chelsea.

The 29-year-old has struggled for playing time under Antonio Conte so far this season, making just six appearances in all competitions.

Guardiola bought Fabregas for Barcelona from Arsenal in 2011 for £35m. He scored 20 goals and contributed to Barca’s success in winning four trophies that season.

Fabregas is out of favour with Antonio Conte and has played just 87 minutes in the Premier League this season.

The former Barcelona midfielder also rejected moves to AC Milan and Juventus in the summer.

Guardiola is reportedly looking to bolster his midfield options as he’s unhappy with Fernandinho’s performances for City this term.

Chelsea signed Fabregas from Barcelona for £30 million in June 2014.

Jurgen Klopp : Steven Gerrard’s ‘Always Welcome’ At Liverpool

Featured Image

Jurgen Klopp says Steven Gerrard is “always welcome” at Liverpool, after some fans believed the midfielder had hinted at an LA Galaxy exit.

Gerrard’s contract with the five-time MLS Cup winners expires at the end of the season, with Galaxy playing their final regular game of the campaign today having already booked a play-off spot.

And some took a post on the 36-year-old’s Instagram account as a goodbye message when he was actually addressing the Galaxy supporters ahead of the club’s planned fan appreciation night tonight.

The post read “Living in Los Angeles and playing for the great Galaxy supporters has been a privilege. You have made this place feel like home to me. This city and this club will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you #8.”

Klopp was asked about the topic later in the day, following his side’s 2-1 win over West Brom, saying: “Steven Gerrard is always so welcome at Liverpool FC.

“You cannot imagine how welcome. So, absolutely no problem. But everything that we have already or will speak to each other stays in this talk.

“That is how I know Stevie and that is how I am. But nobody should worry that we have no space for Steven Gerrard. No – everything will be fine, 100 per cent.”

Jose Mourinho : I’ll Never Sell Wayne Rooney

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has vowed never to sell Wayne Rooney.

In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports , the manager said he will never reach the position where he feels forced to sell the striker.

Rooney has been in and out of United’s side since Mourinho took over from Louis van Gaal during the summer, with his last three Premier League appearances all coming as a substitute.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Mourinho said, when asked if he would ever be as ruthless as to sell the 30-year-old: “No, never.

“I will never make that decision. A player of his stature, a player of his history in the club will never go to point where club or manager want to make that decision for him.

“I put him [Rooney] on the bench for three matches in a row. That is hard for him, hard for me, so that is being ruthless, to put in my mind the interests of the team in front of the player, prestige, status. In this case even legend. To put on bench a player with the numbers he has for club and country is hard.

“But as we were saying before, this is an industry where the people who leads, sometimes in a correct decision, sometimes not correct decisions, but in our mind the decisions we think is the best for the team.”

Jose Mourinho believes Rooney’s continous dip in form is as a result of playing in too many positions in recent years.

Rooney has tended to drop deeper with age and successive England managers have regularly played him in a more withdrawn midfield role, at times even as a holding player.

Mourinho added: “I think it then created a bit of a doubt in relation to his role, to his position, to his future and I think players especially in moments of less confidence, they need to be clear in his head.

“He cannot be jumping from No 6 to No 9, or No 9 to No 10, or No 9 to No 6. For me, he is an attacking player. What is an attacking player for me? For him, a 9 or 10.

“Play No 6, play in midfield, not with me unless we need it and unless we ask him to do that, but with me, I want the ideas completely clear. He is a second striker, plays behind the striker or as a striker. That’s what I think is Wayne Rooney.”

Mourinho also refuted talk that Rooney’s career is in decline and is sure he will return to a high level of performance for club and country.

He said: “I think he’s paying for his success. He had so many successes in his career. He brought his expectation levels to such a level that people probably think he has to perform in every match, every week, every month, every season at the same level. For me, that’s a problem.

“I think in this country it happens to everyone, it is just your nature, you build people, you kill people, you build again and you destroy again! And I think it is just the nature of the business, especially in football.”

Tuchel: Dortmund Were Not Ready For BuLi

Featured Image

Thomas Tuchel has criticised Dortmund for turning in a poor performance in the match against Ingolstadt.

Dortmund underperformed in the first half against Ingolstadt, with the low-ranked club racing to a 2-0 lead.

Stand-in captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang did pull one back for Dortmund prior to the hour-mark before Ingolstadt swiftly restored their two-goal cushion. Adrian Ramos’ strike set-up a grandstand finish that culminated in substitute Christian Pulisic tucking home the leveller in stoppage time.

“We were not ready to play in the Bundesliga,” head coach Tuchel told the club’s official website. “In any area, neither technically, tactically or in the intensity or body language.

“There was a huge disproportion and difference between the first and second half. But it is also appropriate to apply and to recognise that the second half was good from the players.

“Clearly, we are disappointed because we expected to play well from the start, but perhaps we cannot expect that all the time.”
