Aisha Has Won, But The Other Room Remains Empty

Aisha Has Won, But The Other Room Remains Empty, By Aliyu U. Tilde

One may disagree with the method she deployed, but it is difficult to deny the truth in her statements. Sometimes, it requires a sacrifice so big to change such trends, especially when it is known that the leader is not truly in charge. Aisha chose to make that sacrifice and it has already started yielding dividends. The party must be smiling.

This piece was written by Aliyu U. Tilde. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Barely two weeks after taking her complaints to the public, the president has started meeting with party officials and its governors on the matter, asking them to help correct the situation and ensure that party members are brought on board. Aisha has won. But it took her ‘stupidity’ to dislodge or at least curb the influence of those making the appointments on behalf of her husband and at the expense of the party. A Jaaraama!

Aisha, Welcome To The Club Of Wailing Wailers

An ambassadorial list of over forty people was released but it again exposed the inadequacies she cried against. In states like Taraba, people vehemently opposed to the APC were nominated in disregard of party members. If such non-APC nominees had possessed a pedigree of unique competence, their selection would have been hailed as a testimony to the commitment of our president to excellence. But they are not special in any way. These are just pedestrian politicians and AGIPs (Any Government In Power) from the opposition PDP. Such people can be found even among the present ministers. I would not like to mention here how some of them got there.

The cry of Aisha and the APC was justified. I am happy that the president has realised this and taken the right step to correct the anomaly. 2019 may not need the president. But the president needs 2019. For the fulfillment of that desire, he needs to take his party along. That was the simple message of the First Lady. In fact, if he had taken the pain of making significant inputs into the lists of nominees, the crisis would not have happened.

It was his delegation of the job to some people that led to the mess in the first place. If, as a president, you shy away from nominations, the people you delegate the duty to will fill your government with their cronies and friends who may not necessarily share your philosophy. So participate actively in conjunction with the party but with a clear understanding that only credible people will make it to the office.

One other thing still needs to be corrected. The new practice of nominating people without consulting them is not a good idea. Supporters of the president may spin this anomaly as an attestation to his commitment to merit but I see it differently. If you are tasking someone with a public appointment, courtesy demands that you consult him. Not all people would be happy with jobs thrown at them as if they were labourers praying to be hired or some hungry dogs anxiously waiting for crumbs to be thrown at them at a dinner table. If some are happy to be shortlisted that way, some may not be.

The Room President Buhari Really Needs Now

We have not forgotten the length that my sister Hajiya Naja’atu Mohammed went to turn down her appointment as a board member of a federal university in a paid advert on a national daily last year. Though it was easy for some to dismiss her and some bad-mannered supporters of the President to call her names, a repeat should have been avoided. However, the government was again to be greeted with an equal, if not greater embarrassments in the last three days. It is the price of failure to learn from one’s mistake.

If the First Lady has abandoned the Villa for London in protest until the president starts to listen to her and the party, I plead with my sister to return given the weight he condescended before the party.

Though my sister Mrs. Pauline Talen could hide behind the sickness of her husband, my mentor Usman Bugaje had no cover to take. He was ready to express his decline in a press conference yesterday, reported the Blueprint, if it were not for the intervention of Mallam Adamu Adamu and Col. Hamid Ali who rushed to the venue pleading with him to put off the conference. Yet, Bugaje was not done. Typically, he put a call to the Chief of Staff to decline the nomination and register his displeasure in strong terms over the manner in which it was made. A simple act of consultation would have saved the government such embarrassment.

The Unaired Part Of Mrs Buhari’s Interview, By Jaafar Jaafar

So consultation, consultation, consultation, all the way. It is a principle that never fails a leader.

I personally respect my governor in this regard. He called me and asked for an appointment. When we met, he offered me to choose any position in his government. I pleaded with him that I cannot be available at this point of my life for a job in government but I am ready to advise him whenever I feel the advice will be useful. He backed off, though I later heard that he expressed his grudge to a common friend, saying, “Wai shi Tilde ya dauka mu wawaye ne? Mu ba ayyukanmu muka bari ba muke wannan din don jama’a?” I said, “Oho dai. Na tsira.”

The governor carried this understanding and let me be. When my name came up again during the constitution of Bauchi State University, it took the assurance of my friend, the deputy governor, that I will not decline the part-time appointment, before the governor became comfortable enough to include me in the prospective list. Still the deputy governor called me at midnight for an affirmation before the appointments went public the following day. I told him it was okay, so long as it is part time – a once or twice a year board meeting or so. Taron shan shayi ne sau uku a shekara. Ba komai.

I therefore plead with the Presidency to learn from its recent experience and consult people before going public with their nominations. And as it heeded to the bitter remarks of our First Lady and the complaints for the ruling party, let it also lend its ears to our criticisms and take them in good faith.

‘My Wife Belongs To My Kitchen’ – Buhari Reacts To Aisha’s ‘Controversial’ BBC Interview

If the First Lady has abandoned the Villa for London in protest until the president starts to listen to her and the party, I plead with my sister to return given the weight he condescended before the party. Muna biko. A warta, useni.

Aisha, you have won. Please return. The other room is empty.

UTME Result 3-Year Validity: Senate Suspends Amendment Of JAMB Act

Featured Image

The Senate on Wednesday suspended the amendment of the Act establishing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) so as to allow for adequate consultation with stakeholders.

The upper chamber had earlier ratified the extension of the validity of the results of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) being conducted by JAMB to three years.

According to the senate, the decision was granted to lessen the financial burden of the examination on parents, students and JAMB.

Confirming the suspension, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Education (Basic and Secondary), Senator Aliyu Wamakko, told reporters during a visit to the headquarters of JAMB in Abuja, that the senate would not approve laws that would impede the progress of any institution.

Represented by Senator Ajayi Boroffice, Wamakko said:

“Your JAMB result is only valid for one year and we thought it will be better for it to be valid at least for three years. It will reduce the burden on the parents, on the students themselves even on the institution that is conducting the test. I think it is what is good for all of us and I don’t think the public will reject it.

“As I said we don’t make laws for an individual or for the senate. We make law for the country in the interest of all of us. A bill must not necessarily be at the convenience of a particular organization, having said that, since we don’t want to make a law that will impede the progress of any institution we are bound to listen to what they are saying. We are bound to listen to them.”

“I think JAMB has made so much progress over the years and all we can say is that they should continue to improve on their performance because the lives of millions of Nigerians will depend on them and I hope the confidence they will repose in them they will be able to justify it. We are happy with our visit, we are happy with the registrar, we are happy with the management and I think we are happy with ourselves too,” he added.

In his reaction, JAMB Registrar, Is-haq Oloyede, lauded the senate for heeding to its appeal to suspend the amendment of its Act.

The Registrar also called on the members of the House of Representatives and the Executive to follow the footstep of the senate by giving room for consultation with stakeholders.

He said: “I believe that they must have considered so many things before coming to that conclusion at that time but my appeal is to the other legs – the House of Representatives and to the President that it will do more harm to the students than good.

“One problem I find is that when there is a problem rather than studying the problem and look for strategy to solving them we will jump into conclusion which is more dangerous than the original problem.

“When you look at the issue of three years somebody mentioned that that is what is done in Britain and US. There is a basic difference. They are conducting aptitude test and aptitude test will last longer. We are conducting achievement test and you can’t compare the two. If you want to go in that direction why not but there will be change of infrastructure, everything will be in place. You don’t midway into a system.

“For instance when you make that type of law you have not contacted NUC to say ‘NUC change your syllabus.’ You want to admit somebody you conduct the exam today the intension is to test the ability of the student to cope with university education at the 100 Level for instance. If they change the syllabus our exam must change and that will not synchronize with your three years. You will having a set of students who are tested for a programme different from the one they are doing.”

Stoke City’s Glen Johnson Linked With January Move To Barcelona

Featured Image

Stoke City and England right-back Glen Johnson has been put forward as a low-cost potential January addition for Barcelona, reports the Stoke Sentinel.

The 32-year-old defender has been name checked by Mundo Deportivo in a cluster of right-backs who could fit the bill for Luis Enrique this winter.

Barca are thought to be after a right-back as they chase double glory in La Liga and the Champions League this season. (Occasional Stoke fan) Sergi Roberto and Javier Mascherano have both filled that role at times so far this term. Aleix Vidal’s future at the club is said to be in the balance.

Johnson has been included alongside players such as 34-year-old Darijo Srna, currently with Shakhtar Donetsk, and Juventus outcast Stephan Lichtsteiner, aged 32.

They write: “Johnson fits the same profile. He had a long career with Liverpool and now he’s at Stoke City, where his contract expires in 2017. Other veterans at this level have more draw backs because they have played in the Champions League this season are they are key men at their clubs.

“In that case are players like Pablo Zabaleta (aged 31, Manchester City), Branislav Ivanovic (32, Chelsea), Antonio Valencia (31, Manchester United), Rafinha (31 years, Bayern) and Bacary Sagna (33 years, Manchester City), now injured.”

Johnson is currently injured too, hoping to be back next month as he nurses a calf problem.

Inter Milan Ready To Make Shock Bid For Wayne Rooney

The Manchester United skipper has been told to find a new club if he wants guaranteed first team football.

And with his prospects at Old Trafford looking increasingly bleak it would appear clubs are taking notice across the globe.

Sven Goran Eriksson is interested in taking the England captain to China and is ready to tempt him with a mega-money offer.

But, according to Calciomercato, Serie A giants Inter are also monitoring the situation and would be interested in doing a deal next summer.

The report says Inter are planning a huge overhaul of their attacking players in an attempt to cut costs.

The Italian club currently have Mauro Icardi, Eder, Rodrigo Palacio, Gabigol, Stevan Jovetic, Antonio Candreva and Ivan Perisic all on their books.

It is said if some of these players can be moved on then a deal for Rooney could be possible.

The 31-year-old has reportedly set his sights on becoming the club’s record goalscorer, with him needing just two goals to surpass Sir Bobby Charlton’s tally.

Rooney is under contract at Old Trafford until June 2019 and would reportedly command a fee in the region of £27million.

He has made 537 appearances for the Red Devils since joining from Everton in 2004, scoring 248 goals.

Featured Image

Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo, has been indicted in a criminal case as regards to drivers license in Granada, Spain and may likely be slammed with a two-year jail term if found guilty in court.

According to a local publication, Marca, the provincial district attorney’s office of Granada is requesting a two-year prison term and a fine of 3,000 Euros for Ighalo, his ex-Granada teammate, Diego Buonanotte, and 93 others for allegedly bribing their way to pass a driving test.

It was gathered that a provisional writing of the prosecution showed that in 2012 and 2013 someone was hired to write the exams for Ighalo and the other accused.

Further findings revealed that three syndicates of Íllora (Granada), Mengíbar (Jaén) and Ciudad Real, who moved to Granada, allegedly recruited students to help write exams for clients who wanted to pass the driving license exams, and were charged between 1,500 and 2,500 Euros.

After the test was written, the errors made on the sheet were deleted.

With this, the prosecutor found the Super Eagles striker culpable of the crime of falsifying an official document.

Buhari Writes NASS, Seeks To Borrow $29.9Bn

Featured Image

President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the National Assembly to approve external borrowing plan of $29.960 billion for execution of key infrastructural projects across the country between 2016 and 2018.

In two separate letters to the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, which were read on the floor of both chambers on Tuesday, the president also requested for virement of N180.8 billion in the 2016 budget for provision of needed votes for some sectors.

READ ALSO: Akintunde Akinwande: Yet Another Nominee Rejects Buhari’s Job Offer

Buhari, in the letters, said that the projects and programmes to be executed with the borrowed funds cut across all sectors and were selected based on positive technical economic evaluations as well as the contribution they would make to the socio-economic development of the country.

The president explained that targeted projects cuts across all sectors with special emphasis on infrastructure, agriculture, health, education, water supply, growth and employment generation.

Other sectors he said included poverty reduction through social safety net programmes and governance and financial management reforms, among others.

He said that the $29.96billion to be borrowed is made up of proposed projects and programmers loan of $11.274billion, special national infrastructure projects ($10.686billion), Euro bonds of $4.5billion and federal government budget support of $3.5billion.

“Considering the huge infrastructure deficit currently being experienced in the country and the enormous financial resources required for o fill the gap in the face of dwindling resources and the inability of our annual budgetary provisions to bridge the infrastructural deficit, it has become necessary for o resort to prudent external borrowing to bridge the financing gap which will largely be applied to key infrastructural projects namely: power, railway and road projects among others”, the president stated.

In the virement request, Buhari said the N180 billion would be moved from monies already appropriated for special Intervention programmes both recurrent and capital for funding of critical recurrent and capital items.

READ ALSO: Usman Bugaje: Another Ambassadorial Nominee Rejects Buhari’s Offer

He said the request for virement arose due to a number of reasons, including shortfalls in provisions for personnel costs; inadequate provision ab initio for some items like the amnesty programme; continuing requirements to sustain the war against insurgency and depreciation of the naira.

“However, considering the fact that budgeted revenues are running behind target largely due to the renewed violence in the Niger Delta, and there are no supplementary revenue sources, the most viable option for now is the virement of appropriated funds from heads or sub-heads that may not be fully utilized before the end of this fiscal year”, Buhari added.

Featured Image

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday fixed Dec. 7 to hear the lawsuit filed by Mrs Patience Jonathan, against the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), seeking to unfreeze her account.

The ex-first lady of Nigeria is demanding $200m from the EFCC as damages for infringing on her rights. Also joined in the suit are Pluto Property and Investment company Ltd, Seagate Property Development and Investment Company Ltd, Transocean Property and Investment Company Ltd and Globus Integrarted Service Ltd.

When the case was called on Wednesday, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, who was the counsel for the EFCC told the judge that the case was coming up for the first time and that some of the respondents had not yet been served with the court’s processes. He added that the case was not yet “ripe for hearing” and asked for more time.

Counsel for Mrs Jonathan, Mr. Granville Abibo (SAN) didn’t contest his opinions. So the case was fixed for a December 7 hearing by Judge Babs Kuewumi.

Bling Bling Cavaliers

Featured Image

The new NBA season started yesterday October 25, and as is customary, the Cleveland Cavaliers got their championship rings for winning the title 3 months ago.

It was a great day for Cleveland fans everywhere as they finally watched a Championship banner go up at the Quicken Loans arena.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, joined by Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and vice-chairmen Nate Forbes and Jeff Cohen, along with General Manager David Griffin, presented the Cavs players and coaches with their championship rings in a historic pre-game ceremony. This was the franchise’s first-ever NBA title and the first major sports championship in 52 years to the city of Cleveland.

The ring itself was magnificent, approximately 6.5 carats encrusted with over 400 diamonds plus a one carat diamond that adorns the top of the Larry O’Brien Trophy. Each ring is set in 10K white gold and 14K yellow gold and is the heaviest NBA Championship ring ever made.

Cavaliers

The phrase “WORLD CHAMPIONS” is proudly displayed along the top and bottom in 14K yellow gold. Each letter is framed in diamonds, using a total of 216 diamonds to represent Cleveland’s area code. In the center, the Cleveland Cavaliers “C” logo is made up of custom cut dark garnet that wraps around the coveted Larry O’Brien NBA trophy, also made in 14K yellow gold.

The black outline around the “C” represents the turning point in the NBA finals when the Cavs won three straight games after choosing to wear their black uniforms for Games 5 and 7. Fans wore black tee shirts for Game 6 because of league rule that calls for light uniforms for home games during the playoffs. A one carat diamond sits on top of the trophy to represent the team’s first-ever NBA championship.

On the right and left edges of the ring are 46 diamonds (23 per side) which represent the 46 years that the Cleveland Cavaliers organization has been in existence (1970-2016). The player numbers in 14K yellow gold with each player’s number on his own ring displayed in a banner that drops over the Cleveland skyline to symbolize the connectivity between the city and the team.

On the ring’s band is a line of seven gemstones which represent the seven games played in last year’s NBA Finals. With three white diamonds showing the three games the Golden State Warriors won and four genuine “wine-colored” stones representing the games the Cavaliers won.

It was really an emotional and spectacular event which would have been even better for Cavaliers fans as they watched the team defeat the New York Knicks to win their first game of the season.

His rejection marks the third time an appointee would reject his or her nominations within one week and will certainly come as a huge blow to the president.

It would be recalled, Mrs. Pauline Tallen (Plateau) and Usman Bugaje (Katsina) recently rejected their ambassadorial appointments.

It became apparently clear that Akinwande had turned down his appointment when he shunned his invitation to appear before the Senate Committee on Power for screening on Tuesday and consequently stalling the screening of other nominees.

READ ALSO: Usman Bugaje: Another Ambassadorial Nominee Rejects Buhari’s Offer

Sources say the professor may have rejected the offer due to the fact that he was not consulted before the nomination was made.

“We also learnt that adequate consultation was not made before the man was nominated. We were therefore informed that the nominee may have turned down his nomination,” a source said.

It was also gathered that among the nominees whose credentials were sent to the Senate Committee on Power, Steel Development and Metallurgy, Akinwande’s credentials was nowhere to be found.

While Akinwande was to be the chairman, the other nominees for the board appointment included Sanusi Garuba (vice chairman), Nathan R Shatti (commissioner), Dr. Moses Arigu (commissioner), Dafe C Akpeneye (commissioner), Prof Frank Okafor (commissioner) and Musiliu O Oseni (commissioner).

Speaking on why the committee suspended further screening, the Chairman, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, said it was impossible to screen other nominees in the absence of the chairman-designate.

Abaribe also said the privatisation of electricity sector was meant to improve the power sector, adding that the inauguration of NERC board was key to solving the power sector problems.

He said: “Regrettably, when members of the committee assembled to screen the nominees made by President Buhari, we were told that the chairman-designate was unavoidably absent. The presidential liaison who brought the nominees informed us that the chairman was unavoidably absent.”

The Chairman griped that the board members were nominated three months ago, the Presidency should have confirmed the preparedness of the chairman-designate to appear for screening or otherwise.

“We cannot screen them until we have a formal communication from the presidency,” he said.

Featured Image

Superstar dancer Kaffy has slammed singer Davido following the 3 Thrones concert at the Eko Hotel on Sunday.

According to Kaffy, her crew was contracted by the singer to perform alongside him, but chased them off the stage during the concert.

She wrote on her Instagram: “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! It’s alright if artiste don’t need us . We are artistes ourselves . It is very disrespectful for you to look down at and trample on people who in one way or the other contribute to where u are today. Dance is our widows mite to a lot of your careers . All u need to do is respect us. Even other people under you suffer ur arrogance from stylist to band men. This message is for those of you that disrespectfully disregard us dancers especially. @davidoofficial if u don’t want dancers express it way before U agree to allow them dance than when u about to climb the stage u decide u don’t need us again.or tell dancers not to come near u while u perform .wtf. It’s not ur fault we have learnt our lesson and we thank arrogant artiste like u as this will not continue for long. Nowadays artiste take a piss. People pay a lot of money to see u come out and give a good show it requires more than u jumping all over the place with no content . Even some artiste in other countries who perform alone still plan their craft. They practice they rehearse the Are never tired of doing better than their last. But here most don’t care only few like @peterpsquare and @rudeboypsquare @2niteflavour @tiwasavage @efya_nokturnal @iamseyishay @dareydarey even @jidenna a one man performer plans his craft for his fans. Chelsea Preparing £35 Millon Bid For Antonio Rudiger

Featured Image

Chelsea are preparing a £35m bid for Antonio Rudiger as they aim to beat Manchester United to the Roma defender’s signature, reports The Sun.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte admires Rudiger and only decided against signing him in the summer due to a serious knee injury he sustained just before Euro 2016.

But the defender has recovered from his knee operation sooner than expected and is back at his best after scoring and assisting in Roma reserves’ win over Novara on Saturday.

But Chelsea face stiff competition from Manchester United and City in the race to land Rudiger.

Roma want to hold onto the highly rated defender but it is understood a bid of about £35m could sway the club.

Chelsea are also chasing Juventus star Leonardo Bonucci and Burnley’s Michael Keane.

Ryan Giggs Favourite To Land Wigan Job

Featured Image

Former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs could be set for his first managerial job after being linked with Wigan to replace Gary Caldwell, according to the Daily Express.

Gary Caldwell, who guided the Latics to promotion to the Championship last term, was sacked on Tuesday.

With a visit to Neil Warnock’s in-form Cardiff City at the weekend, the club are looking for a quick replacement, report Wales Online.

And it could well be Giggs, who has been out of work since leaving Manchester United in the summer ending his 27-year association with the club.

Wigan sit 23rd in the Championship after one win in their last 10 matches, and just two in 14 league games.

Giggs, who was interviewed for the Swansea job after Francesco Guidolin was sacked, is looking for a way into management after a two-year spell as assistant to Louis van Gaal at United.

The Welshman admitted “Swansea’s ambitions didn’t match my own” as the club appointed Bob Bradley instead.

Gareth Southgate To Keep Wayne Rooney On As England Captain

Featured Image

New England manager Gareth Southgate has revealed he will not be dropping Wayne Rooney as the team’s captain.

Rooney has been relegated to the bench for both club and country, but Southgate maintains that his leadership qualities are still very much needed.

“He’s the England captain and although he didn’t start in Slovenia, to me he is a hugely influential person in that group and that won’t change,” Southgate said, as quoted by the Guardian.

“Let’s see what that scenario is but I thought his leadership qualities in the 10 days with us shone through. I hadn’t been able to see that first hand and it was hugely impressive.

“I could see how he’s held in the eyes of the rest of the players and the positive influence he has in that environment. If that wasn’t the case I wouldn’t say those things. That’s as it was.

“I haven’t spoken to him since the camp but I’m always conscious players are back into a run of fixtures with their clubs, but I will pick up with him and the others later.”

Borussia Dortmund Want €80 Million For Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Featured Image

Borussia Dortmund have slapped an €80m price-tag on Real Madrid target Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, reports Bild.

The 27-year-old is one of the Continent’s most coveted strikers and he is reportedly a future target for European champions Real Madrid.

Bild reports that initial contact between Dortmund and Real Madrid has already taken place, although the Bundesliga champions are unwilling to sell the Gabon forward for less than €80m.

Dortmund are said to have rejected a bid of £60m from Manchester City over the summer, but Aubameyang’s public admission that he would like to play for Los Blancos some day make the possibility of a move to the Santiago Bernabeu more feasible.

Jose Mourinho : Living In Manchester Is A Disaster

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho is struggling to adapt to life in Manchester after taking the manager’s job at Old Trafford this summer, saying his living arrangements are “a disaster”.

The former Chelsea boss is currently living in the Lowry Hotel on the edge of the city, leaving his wife and two children behind in London.

Mourinho says he’s unable to leave the hotel due to the amount of paparazzi following his every move, much to Mourinho’s chagrin.

In an interview with Sky Sports ahead of tonight’s EFL Cup derby clash with Manchester City, the Portuguese said: “Buy a house? I do not know… I do not know.

“But the reality is that my daughter (Matilde) will be 20 next week. My son (Jose Jr) will be 17 in a couple of months. They are very stable… university in London, football in London, friends.

“So, they are at an age where they can’t chase me like they did before. So, for the first time, the family lives in a different way. We try to feel it, we try to see the evolution of our feelings and see how we cope with the situation.

“But maybe, if I can get a good apartment… not these giant houses that the press says I’m going to buy. I will never buy that. But if I find a nice apartment with a good connection from the garage to the apartment, maybe I do it – but I can’t cook!”

You know the history of the paparazzi,” he added. “For the hotel and the brand that sponsors me, the clothes brand, it’s amazing because they are there every day.

“Everybody knows the name of the hotel. Everybody knows the last arrivals of that brand. So, for them, it is amazing.

“For me, it’s a bit of a disaster because I want sometimes to walk a little bit and I can’t. I just want to cross the bridge and go to a restaurant. I can’t, so it is really bad.

“But I have my apps and I can ask for food to also be delivered, which I do sometimes.”

Jose Mourinho : Give Paul Pogba Time

Featured Image

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba needs to be given time to readjust to the nature of English football, according to his manager Jose Mourinho.

Pogba has been criticised in some quarters for his lacklustre displays for the club so far this season, with many questioning the position he has been used in, but Mourinho has defended the 23-year-old.

The United boss thinks the issue is not so much where the versatile Pogba has played, or the tactical set-up he has been deployed in, but more that the world’s most expensive player is finding it hard to readapt to the game in this country.

“He can play in so many positions,” Mourinho said in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports’ Andy Burton ahead of United’s EFL Cup fourth-round tie with Manchester City at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

“The problem is not the position. The problem is not the tactical system. The problem is, in my opinion, somebody that comes from a different style of football and needs this time to be at his best level in football that is really difficult to play, especially for midfield players.”

Mourinho has backed Pogba – who signed a five-year deal with United last summer – to come good over time, claiming his star man is improving with every game.

“I think it is really difficult to play or adapt from different realities, but he is a phenomenal player,” he said. “He has unbelievable potential. He has years and years to develop his game, so that expectation and investment from the club is based on that – a super player for the next seven or eight years.”

And while Pogba may have only scored once in the Premier League so far this campaign, Mourinho said he and United knew they were not getting the finished article when they re-signed him.

“He’s getting better and better and better at every level,” Mourinho said. “That’s our expectation. We don’t expect Paul to arrive here and the next day to be unbelievable. But the other thing is that we trust him so much that we pass to him this kind of feeling.

“He is a very self-confident boy too, so we are living well with the critics, if you want, and we know what the critics are.”

Going forward, Mourinho envisages Pogba having the all-round skills to be able to drop back and play as a centre back.

“He’s a top player and I think he could be a phenomenal central defender,” he said. “With the quality of his pass, with his aerial game, with his agility in such a big body, for his defensive side of the game, coming from the back with the ball, he would be a phenomenal central defender, too.”
