Sunderland Finally Win A Premier League Match This Season

Featured Image

Sunderland have finally won a Barclays Premier League game this season, after failing to win in their first 10.

The Black Cats secured an impressive 2-1 win away at Bournemouth, despite playing with over half an hour with a man down after Steven Pienaar was sent off in the second half for a second bookable offence.

Dan Gosling gave the home side the lead, using his midriff to send a cross from Adam Smith past Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.  Sunderland had come back shortly after as former Nigerian international Victor Anichebe  thundered an equalizer into the net off a smart assist from Jermain Defoe.

With the match winding down, veteran Premier League striker Defoe scored his 28th goal for the club to give them their first win of the season. Smith had brought down Anichebe in the box, and Defoe had converted the penalty past Bournemouth goalie Artur Boruc.

Despite the win, they remain bottom of the league, level on points with Swanswea, who have a game in hand. Anything asides a win would have meant Sunderland had played the first 11 games without a win, a new record.

Buhari, Jonathan And A Redefinition Of Change – Reno Omokri

Featured Image

Buhari, Jonathan And A Redefinition Of Change, By Reno Omokri

Name your dog Buhari and you will be diligently prosecuted in today’s Nigeria but kill the harmless wife of an evangelist preaching the Gospel of Jesus and you will be acquitted! Welcome to the new improved Nigeria!

This may sound surreal but it is the present day reality we live in in Nigeria.

This piece was written by Reno Omokri. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

The injustices in today’s Nigeria are just too glaring. For instance, Reuben Abati ALLEGEDLY got ₦50 million from Dasuki and goes to jail. Rotimi Amaechi ADMITTEDLY spends $500k (₦235 million at today’s rate) on a one day dinner for Soyinka and becomes a minister! Yet we say we are fighting corruption.

In the midst of these social injustices, we have a president who continues to complain to anyone who cares to listen that he met an empty treasury.

Said the president, “I felt like absconding from the country due to the economic challenges.. We inherited a badly managed economy”.

The above statement by President Muhammadu Buhari is most dishonest and in terms of lying, it is only bested by his Independence Day lie when he said, “Investors from all over the world are falling over themselves to come and do business in Nigeria.”

Nigeria’s economy is being badly managed now. It was not badly managed under President Goodluck Jonathan.

I will now list several actions of the Buhari administration that brought our economy to the state it now is in – a recession.

The first is the rushed implementation of the Treasury Single Account, instead of the gradual implementation planned by the Jonathan administration which conceived the concept of the TSA.

The second is failing to appoint ministers on time, and when he finally appointed them, the president hired a woman whose highest degree is a Bachelors in Economics from a second class British University (University of East London) to succeed a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and former Managing Director of the World Bank as minister of finance.

Not done with putting round pegs into square holes, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed a man who studied French to replace a man who has a PhD in agricultural economics from Purdue University and who had worked at the highest levels of the Rockefeller Foundation as minister for agriculture.

The third reason is the president’s interference with the independence of the Central Bank of Nigeria and his public comments of what he would do with the naira. This led to foreign exchange restrictions that saw 270 companies fold up (according to the Nigerian Labour Congress), seven foreign airlines leave Nigeria, 10 foreign shipping firms divest from our economy and over $3 billion capital flight from Nigeria.

The fourth and most avoidable reason was the constant negative comments that the President made whenever he left the country on state visits. President Buhari de-marketed Nigerians by calling us ‘criminals’ to the Telegraph of London in February of this year. He went to India and declared that Nigeria’s institutions were massively corrupt, and then he went to the US to say the same. Yet he expected foreign investors to flock to Nigeria? I do not think so.

Before Mr. President puts the blame for our present economic malaise on former President Jonathan, he should remember that during the previous administration, Nigeria was projected by CNN Money to be the third fastest growing economy in the world, and by both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund as the largest economy in Africa.

Moreover, when he was speaking to the Conservative Party, former British Prime Minister, David Cameron said of Nigeria under Jonathan as follows: “Yes, we’ve been hearing about China and India for years …but it’s hard to believe what’s happening in Brazil, in Indonesia, in Nigeria too”!

And when the president complains that Jonathan did not save, he must assume that we all love reading cartoons like him instead of the history books!

President Buhari must think that we have forgotten how the Jonathan administration met about $6.5 billion in the Excess Crude Account (ECA), and increased it to almost $9 billion by 2012 only for the Nigerian Governors Forum led by his Supreme Court justice visiting minister for transport to use their influence at the House of Representatives to get them to declare the Excess Crude Account illegal in 2012. Not done, Rotimi Amaechi and his cronies at the NGF approached the Supreme Court to challenge the legality of the Excess Crude Account and Jonathan’s decision to transfer $1 billion from that account to the Sovereign Wealth Fund.

Still not satisfied, Amaechi and his co-travelers caused the then minority APC members of the House of Representatives to approach a Federal High Court on February 7, 2014, for a perpetual injunction restraining the Jonathan administration from operating the ECA and to pay all the proceeds of that account into the Federation Account for sharing amongst the three tiers of government.

The effect of that action was that the Jonathan administration was forced to share the funds in those accounts amongst the three tiers of government.

And what did the Senate, controlled by the president’s party, say when they rejected the proposal on the $29.9 billion loan that his administration sought permission to take?

The Senate rejected the loan request because of the “incompetence of presidential aides tasked with preparing the proposal”. Yet, this is a president accusing the administration under whom Nigeria enjoyed her most consistent and fastest GDP growth of badly managing the economy. Go look in the mirror sir!

Mr. President, if this is the change you promised us, then please permit me to redefine change.

CHANGE is defined as elders borrowing $29.9 billion to spend on their wants while CHAIN is defined as youth who would have to pay back (with interest) the $29.6 billion that was not spent on them. If your father goes to the bank to borrow money to buy clothes for himself and puts your name as surety to repay the loan, you will be a fool to be excited that you will one day inherit second hand clothes. I have said it before – a president who could not generate wealth for himself in his private business cannot generate wealth for you through government business. A president who had to take bank loan to buy his nomination form would definitely have to take another bank loan to fulfill his campaign promises!

Andy Murray Is World Number One, After Raonic’s Withdrawal From The Paris Masters

Featured Image

Andy Murray is finally world number one after Milos Raonic withdrew from their Paris Masters semifinal match.

ICYMI: Andy Murray Wins Vienna Title, And A Step Closer To Djokovic At No 1

The British tennis player needed to reach the final after current number one, Novak Djokovic lost to Marin Cilic in his quarterfinal game on Friday.

But injury problems to Raonic, causing him to withdraw from Saturday’s semifinal has buoyed Murray to the top spot.

Murray will be the first British singles player to hold top spot since computerised rankings began in 1973.

The Scot will play John Isner in Sunday’s final, after the American beat Cilic 6-4 6-3 in Saturday’s first semi-final.

ICYMI: Djokovic Through To Quarterfinals, Holds On To No 1 Spot

Djokovic had topped the rankings for 122 weeks, and completed his career Grand Slam by beating Murray in the French Open final in June.

He will be officially announced as number one on Monday, when the rankings are revised.

Raonic, 25, had beaten France’s 11th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-2 7-6 (7-4) to set up a repeat of July’s Wimbledon final on Saturday.

However, he said that he had felt a problem in his leg during the victory, which a scan revealed was a tear to his right quad.

“Yesterday at I believe 4-2 in the first set I began feeling something in my leg – I didn’t think too much of it at the time,” he said.

“This morning I had trouble waking up and getting out of bed.

“I had some tests and an MRI and they found I have a grade one tear in the right quad so I’m unfortunately not able to compete.”

Nainggolan Slams Martinez For Belgium Omission

Featured Image

Radja Nainggolan is shocked at being left out of Belgium’s squad and finds Martinez’s decision to leave him out due to a lack of fitness strange.

The Roma midfielder pulled out of the national squad ahead of their fixture against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Gibraltar in October due to injury.

And after announcing his squad for the upcoming 2018 World Cup qualifiers, Martinez claimed the 28-year-old midfielder was not physically ready.

Nainggolan does not agree with the coach, pointing to the fact he has started Roma’s last six matches and has scored twice.

“I had a pretty good European Championship, I scored two important goals,” he told Belgian publication Het Nieuwsblad.

“Against Bosnia and Gibraltar in October I was not fit, now I am. However, the coach called me stating I was not fit enough.

“I thought that was strange and I told him that. I have played the last four games for Roma and scored another goal on Thursday.

“This is a disappointment. I like to play for the national team and fit in the group well.

“With [Steven] Defour and [Mousa] Dembele injured or just back from injury, I had hoped to play against Netherlands.”

Negredo Blames Langue Barrier For Neville’s Struggle At Valencia

Featured Image

Former Valencia striker, Alvaro Negredo believes Gary Neville joined the club at its worst time and blamed his early exit on his inability to speak Spanish.

The former Manchester United defender took over Los Che in his first venture into the managerial business, but could not see out the remainder of the 2015-16 season.

Neville only managed 10 wins from 28 games in all competitions and couldn’t save the team’s UCL campaign, as Valencia crashed out of the Copa del Rey and the Europa league, before he was replaced by Ayestaran.

Negredo admitted tension at Valencia was high during that period, making it difficult for Neville to succeed.

“I think he came in the worst moment. It was a very difficult situation; very tense with the supporters, with the technical staff … the criticism of the club was at its height,” he told ESPN FC.

“The results didn’t go in our favour and it’s a pity, because he was a great guy and treated us very well.

“What happened was, some team-mates didn’t understand English, and a translator saying it just isn’t the same as a manager saying it.

“You don’t feel it in the same way. And, well, through the language, and the pressure that was there, there wasn’t much time … it was difficult.”

Ex-Manchester City striker Negredo has since returned to the Premier League with Middlesbrough, and he believes the English top flight is more physical than LaLiga.

“The English teams have a more direct game, stronger, more physical than Real [Madrid] or Barcelona,” added Negredo.

“For me, it hasn’t changed much in that sense. The teams are very intense, with players who fight for every ball.”

Otamendi Hoping City Can Maintain Their Goal Scoring Form

Featured Image

Nicolas Otamendi, Manchester City defender has charged his teammates to maintain their impressive form when they welcome Middlesbrough to the Etihad.

Manchester City men currently leads the pack in the UCL and go into the EPL match on the back of an impressive victory against Barcelona.

Otamendi is keen for City to continue their fine form, which has seen them net seven times in two games.

“We are leaders of the Premier League and we want to keep being the leaders so to do that we need to win,” he said, via the club’s official website.

“Our mentality and what the manager says to us is that we have to win. But every game is not the same, the rivalries are different but our mentality is always positive and focused on winning.”

The 3-1 win over Barca has given City a boost ahead of the meeting with 15th-placed Middlesbrough.

Otamendi wants his team to maintain that level of performance at the Etihad Stadium.

“Barcelona are the kind of team that you always want to beat. I’ve never been able to beat them in the past so obviously you always enjoy beating such a good team as FC Barcelona,” he said.

“It gives you a boost as a player and as a team to beat them but that’s not going to be worth it if we don’t get good results in our next Champions League matches.

“For us it was important to win. It’s always positive to beat a team like Barca but form can change all the time. For us it was a big step but we now have to keep this level.”

“It’s made my job much easier because I know if I cross it then he will head it in. He is an easy player to play with.

“He will get it, set it off and then get into the box, so I know I just have to get it out of my feet and get it in there and he will get his head on it.”

The Nigerian military has announced that troops of 121 Battalion, deployed at Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Area, Borno, for Operation Lafiya Dole, on Saturday, rescued one of the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls – near the border with Cameroon.

“Nigerian army troops rescued another Chibok schoolgirl at Pulka” on Friday evening, the Army spokesman, Sani Usman told AFP, in a statement in Abuja.

Bodo Iiigner : Real Madrid Don’t Need De Gea

Ex-Real ‘keeper Bodo Illgner does not believe the European champions need to revive their interest in David de Gea.

De Gea was close to joining Real from Man Utd in 2015, before his move broke down in dramatic fashion on the last day of the summer transfer window.

Illgner, who won the Champions League during his time at the Bernabeu, is a fan of De Gea, but does not believe he is needed in the Spanish capital.

“I do not think that signing De Gea is necessary,” he told German website Real Total.

“The best [players] have to be at Real Madrid and De Gea is one of those. He shows it every week in the Premier League and in the Europa League.

“But I think that is it not worth investing so many euros on a position that is already very well covered.”

David Moyes : I’m Not The Cause Of Mourinho’s Problems

Featured Image

Former Manchester United manager David Moyes says that Jose Mourinho’s issues in the Old Trafford hotseat this season show how tough a job it is.

Moyes was sacked after eight months in charge in 2013, having taken over from Sir Alex Ferguson, and Louis van Gaal did little better and left after two underwhelming seasons. But Mourinho’s record has been worse than either of his two predecessors and the current Sunderland boss believes it’s because of the pressure.

“In some ways it does show that it maybe was not just down to Moyes,” Moyes was quoted as saying by The Mirror.

“The Manchester United job will be tough for anybody who takes it, whether it be Mourinho, Van Gaal or Moyes. It is always going to be a tough job, because you are following probably the finest manager in our time [Ferguson].”

Moyes insists that whoever takes charge at Old Trafford needs trust and time in order to bring success back.

“Manchester United need stability, and it is a football club that has always trusted itself, trusted its managers, believed in their managers, and certainly given their managers time to do the right job,” he said. “It is a great club.

“I had my time there, and it has passed on to somebody else. I am just saying it is a great job. Jose is a top manager, as was LVG, but it is difficult for whoever goes to Manchester United.

“Do Mourinho and Van Gaal’s struggles put my reign in context? I am glad you are saying that, because I have always felt that. I felt that it would take time, but it is football.”

Report : Jose Mourinho Ready To Sack Up To Eight Manchester United Players

Featured Image

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho wants to axe a minimum of eight players over the next two transfer windows, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Defenders Marcos Rojo, Matteo Darmian and Phil Jones will be allowed to leave as will midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Michael Carrick, who has the option to extend his one-year deal by another 12 months.

Wingers Memphis Depay and Ashley Young are also surplus to requirements.

Mourinho – who has now lost 18 of his past 42 matches as a manager dating back to his time at Chelsea – reacted to his team’s latest set-back by accusing his players of not being “mentally prepared”, “not focused”, “not concentrated” and of treating the game like a pre-season friendly.

United – who are seven points adrift of fourth place in the Premier League – face Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday having won just one of their past seven league games. They have failed to score in their past three league fixtures.

Barcelona Pulled Out Of Signing Celtic 13-year-old Wonderkid  Karamoko Dembele To Avoid FIFA Problems

Featured Image

Barcelona opted against making a move for 13-year-old Celtic sensation Karamoko Dembele after scouting him, reports Sport.

Dembele shot to fame last month after making his bow for Celtic’s U20 side.

Barca scouts discovered the teenager at several youth-team tournaments and Sport reports that the youngster was willing to play for Barcelona.

However Barcelona, who were subject to a FIFA-imposed transfer ban in 2015, decided against signing him in order to avoid the possibility of getting in trouble with FIFA once again.

He remained with Celtic however and has since burst into the spotlight for club and country.

Dembele made his debut for the Hoops’ Under-20 side last month and this week pulled on the dark blue of Scotland at the Under-16 Victory Shield tournament.

His international future remains in doubt however as he also trained with the England Under-15s and is also eligible for Ivory Coast.

Celtic now won’t let anyone close to the player. Both Manchester United and Manchester City are desperate to sign Dembele for their academies, but the Scottish champions have asked for FIFA to protect the young teenager after his appearances in the media.

Barça were the first club to move for him, though. Maybe in the future he’ll remember that they were the side that wanted to take a chance on him.

Arsene Wenger : Ozil Can Be ‘As Great’  As Dennis Bergkamp

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger says Mesut Ozil can match Dennis Bergkamp’s legendary Arsenal status if he signs a new contract.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s north London derby, Wenger acknowledged “similarities” between the two before claiming Ozil could eventually carry the same weight as Bergkamp in Arsenal’s history.

“Dennis Bergkamp committed for a long period, played until he was 38,” the Frenchman said.

“I wish we have 10 more years of Ozil. That depends. To become a legend at the club you need to stay for a long time.

“I understand that being a legend like Dennis Bergkamp, if you stay two years you would not be a legend.”

Arsenal continue to work on new deals for Alexis Sanchez and Ozil, who goes into the Tottenham game on the back of five goals in as many appearances.

“I believe he is at an age where he is more mature,” Wenger said. “He is 28. The difference today is he focuses more on efficiency. When he arrived here he was more a player to play, focused on playing. Today efficiency is more in his mind.

“The main transformation we got from him, he makes more runs in behind to score goals. He pushes himself much more. He has that in him as well.

“Sometimes the trap for very talented players is it is easy for them. They know subconsciously they don’t need to push themselves too hard to be efficient.”

A source close to the polity said Obanikoro was released by the EFCC at about 5:00pm on Friday.

The source said, “The EFCC released Senator Obanikoro around 5pm. He is on his way home now.”

Obanikoro was said to have refunded N100m and pledged to return N480m, while the commission also seized his Nigerian and American passports.

The source continued: “EFCC asked Obanikoro to submit his passports. He was only willing to drop his Nigerian passport, but he has finally submitted the American passport.

“He was asked to produce two directors who must also present a three-month salary pay slip.

“He has returned N100million and has pledged to return N480million. The actual balance is meant to be N685million, but he was able to provide receipts for some transactions.

“He paid N85million to someone and that person has been traced.

“He also bought some bulletproof vehicles when he was minister and they will be handed over to the EFCC.

“The cost of the vehicles will be deducted from the amount that should be returned.”Another source said:

“Obanikoro claimed that he used part of his own share to do an anti-Boko Haram campaign in Lagos in 2014.

“However, we found out that he wasn’t telling the whole truth, because some of the money was spent on his governorship campaign when he was contesting against Jimi Agbaje during the PDP primary.”

Obanikoro, who was arrested on October 17, was accused of receiving N4.7bn through the Office of the National Security Adviser in 2014.
