This announcement was made by Brig.-Gen. Victor Ezugwu, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, while speaking at a forum for the reintegration of children associated with armed forces or armed groups in Maiduguri.

Speaking on behalf of Ezugwu, Col. Yusuf Ali, said that most of those released were women and children.

He said: ”The Nigerian Army gives utmost priority to the rights of detainees especially women and children.

“We always try to fast track investigation to determine their fate, while those found innocent were released without delay.”

”Consequently, between February and October this year we have had five releases.

“In February 135 persons comprising mainly women and children were released, 204 were released in May, while the remaining three releases were carried out in September and October”.

He said that the army had also improved on the provision of welfare for the detainees.

“As part of the military high command care for the vulnerable persons under our protective custody.

“We have identified areas needing attention including feeding, health care, decongestion of cells, respect for detainees rights, sanitation and personal hygiene,” he said.

He said children and vulnerable persons were fed three times daily with balanced diet.

“We always provide meat or fish in every meal and drinks every Sunday for them.

” If fact, some of those released would have preferred to remain with us if they had the choice rather than move to IDPs camps,” he said.

Atletico Must Improve To Win Madrid Derby, Says Gabi

Featured Image

Real Madrid will play Atletico after the international derby and midfielder, Gabi believes they must improve if they’re to win the encounter.

The rojiblancos have lost two of their last three LaLiga matches, dropping to fourth on the table and are six points behind Madrid, who top the table.

Gabi recognises the importance of keeping pace with Zinedine Zidane’s men and urged Atleti to rediscover the defensive strength that has been so key to their success under Diego Simeone.

“It is going to be a vital game for us. It is crucial because we cannot let Real Madrid get too far ahead of us in the table,” Gabi was quoted as saying by AS.

“We want to be neck and neck with them, but we have to improve if we are to win the derby.

“We have to go back to being a team which is solid at the back and we all have to do our job to make the team secure.

“It is a difficult moment for us, the team is used to winning, but we are not playing well and now we have gone two games on the trot losing away from home. Defeats are always negative and more so when they mean you drop places in the table.

“We want to be the best team and for that to happen we have to improve.”

Featured Image

Television network, CBS along with the Warner Bros company are reportedly creating a spin-off of hit television sitcom ‘The Big Bang Theory‘.

The spin-off would be based on the live of a young Sheldon Cooper, one of the main characters on the show.

Jim Parsons, who plays Sheldon on the show is going to be the executive producer of the upcoming spin-off, along with The Big Bang Theory producers, Chuck Lorre and Steve Molaro.

Co-creator of The Big Bang Theory, Bill Prady is also likely to be involved in production in some capacity.

The script will reportedly be focused on a 12-year-old Sheldon, growing up in Texas with his family and his overwhelming genius. Hopefully, we get to see his elder brother George, more of his twin sister, Missy, his alcoholic father, George Cooper and his christian mother, Mary Cooper, a recurring character in The Big Bang franchise.

Andrea Barzagli Out For Two Months

Featured Image

A dislocated shoulder will keep Juventus defender Andrea Barzagli out for two months, the club has announced.

He had suffered the injury in the Bianconeri’s 2-1 over Chievo during the weekend, where he had to be stretchered off the field in the opening minutes after an awkward landing.

A statement on Juventus’ official website read: “Andrea Barzagli was forced off through injury just five minutes into Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Chievo at the Stadio Bentegodi after dislocating his left shoulder.

“Andrea Barzagli today checked into J Medical for instrumental tests and orthopaedic consultancy by Dr. Ravera regarding the consequences of the dislocation of his left shoulder, sustained in the Serie A match in Verona.”

“The player will have to wear a protective brace for around four weeks. The current prognosis for his return is approximately two months.”

He has already been removed from Italy’s squad for the upcoming international matches, and will now set his sights for being fit for Juventus’ match against Bologna on the 8th of January.

The Bianconeri are 5 points ahead of AC Milan, and will be hoping to maintain their lead without the 35-year old center-back.

LASU Prolongs Deadline For Certificate Collection

Featured Image

The Lagos State University (LASU) has extended the deadline for collection of certificates by its graduates to another two weeks, in an attempt to clear its registry of backlog.

This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Adekoya Martins, the Acting Head, Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations of the institution‎ and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos.

Mr Martins told the news agency that the extension was due to the impressive turnout by the graduates.

The management of LASU had on September 20, announced that 24,734 certificates of graduates, who left the institution over the last 10 years ago, were lying uncollected at its registry.

The authorities of the institution further warned that any graduate who failed to collect the certificate before October 21, will pay ‎N15,000 as fine before collection.

‎Meanwhile, the university spokesman said collection of the certificate before the deadline would be free.

“The N15,000 fine is to ensure that the graduates come forward to collect the backlog of certificates lying at the registry,’’ he said.

According to him, most of the certificates are not for recent graduates of two to three years ago, adding that those who failed to collect ”are mostly those who graduated 10 years and above ago’’.

Martins said the new practice in the university is to send message to graduates as soon as their certificates are ready.

Bestiality As Man Rapes Goat To Death In Ondo

Residents were left dumbfounded after a young man was apprehended for having sexual intercourse with a goat in Irun Akoko, Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The suspect, Afolabi Bamidele, was said to have raped the domestic animal to death in a showdown of gruesome bestiality.

Leadership quoted a source who was well enlightened on the incident as saying that:

”He picked the goat from a neighbour’s house and took it into the bush. He pull off his cloth and started having sex with it.

” After the sex, he brought out a handkerchief to clean up his semen from the goat vagina when he was caught by somebody who called on the neighbours to see what happened. “

The source who craved for anonymity added that it was the prompt intervention of the policemen that saved the suspect from the wrath of the irate youths who were about to lynch him.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, Mr. Femi Joseph said he had not been informed of the incident at the time of this report.

His words: ”The DPO (Division Police Officer) of the Ikare Akoko Police Division has not briefed me about the incident, I will let you know when I’m briefed. “

Speaking at the ceremony, the Managing Director of Guinness, Mr Peter Ndegwa, said that the company was committed to creating awareness about responsible drinking of alcohol in Nigeria.

Speaking on behalf of Ndegwa, Mr Sesan Sobowale, the company’s Corporate Relations Director, said alcohol consumed moderately and responsibly by adults who chose to drink could be part of a balanced lifestyle.

His words: “This is why we have used a variety of programmes to promote a culture in which adults who chose to drink can do so responsibly.

“We have worked in partnership with government, individuals, NGOs and other companies to tackle alcohol misuse, including excessive drinking, drinking while driving and under-age drinking.

“We have also taken measures to ensure that our products are advertised and marketed responsibly, that is why we will not issue an advert without clearly stating that it is not for people under 18.’’

“This is to promote alcohol education and to tackle misuse by advocating effective evidence-based policy.

“In line with our commitment to creating awareness about responsible drinking, Guinness Nigeria will be partnering NYSC to deliver Drink IQ training sessions, targeted at corps members and ultimately, the general public.

“Our intent is to start with train-the-trainers programme where these trainers will in turn train other people who will be advocates in their places of primary assignments.

“Guinness will begin this training with the officials of NYSC drawn from 36 states of the federation who will in turn facilitate these sessions in orientation camps across the country.’’

In his remarks, the Director- General, NYSC, Brigadier- General Sule Kazaure, who was represented by the  director, Community Development Service and Special Projects, Mrs Rhoda Kaka Kwaki, described the partnership as a clear demonstration of the company’s positive disposition towards the welfare and development of Nigerians, particularly, the youth.

He bemoaned that those, who drank to stupor have lost their lives to accidents, destroyed their homes, lost their jobs as well as developed major killer diseases like liver cirrhosis.

Kwaki said: “The NYSC scheme in the past 43 years has not relented on its effort in ensuring that its mandate is vigorously pursued thereby making meaningful impact on the lives of its host communities.

“It is noteworthy to mention that through partnering national and international organisations, non-governmental organisations and faith-based organisations, the scheme has facilitated the realisation of set goals and objectives of its partners.

“It is against this backdrop that the goal of this partnership is on Drink IQ (meaning responsible drinking).

“What we have sown today will blossom into an enduring and sustainable entity for the benefit of our communities and environs.’’

NNPC Wrong To Raise Fuel Price By N4 – Kachikwu

Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, the Minister of State for Petroleum, has said the recent N4 increase in price of petrol in Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) filling stations comes as a surprise to him.

The minister made this disclosure known after receiving an award at an event organized by the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) in Abuja on Sunday.

NNPC retail outlets had been selling fuel at N141 until on Thursday, when the price was increased by N4 – meeting up with the government benchmark of N145.

The minister said: “It is obviously humbling and too early in the day to receive an award and to be recognised so soon in some of the things we are trying to do. It is humbling, I thank them very much.

“First, I am not aware that the NNPC has increased price. I need to look into that. It is a bit of surprise for me, because there are processes in doing this, if they have done that, it means they are doing it wrongly.

“Let me find out what the facts are.”

Mr. Kachikwu also hinted that the increase may not be unconnected to the foreign exchange differentiation.

He continued: “Having said that, the reality is that what we did at the point where we did some liberalisation, was to enable the free market float the price.

“Obviously, as you look at foreign exchange differentiations and all that, it would impact. The worst thing you could do is to go back to an era where we basically were fixing prices.

“What we ought to be doing was watching the prices, making sure that they are not taking advantage of the common man; making sure that the template is respected.

“One of the things I think we had hoped to do, which we should still do, before we embark on any price increase is to work on those templates.”

Leicester Need A Break To Regain Energy, Says Ranieri

Featured Image

Claudio Ranieri is welcoming the international break, as he believes his squad is in dire need of rest following their 2-1 loss to West Brom.

Slimani’s equaliser was cancelled out by Matt Phillips goal after James Morrison opened the scoring at King Power stadium, ending the foxes 14-month unbeaten run at home.

The result means Leicester have won just one of their last six Premier League games, and Ranieri admitted that his players – who are are also competing in the Champions League – are in need of respite.

He said: “It was not such a good match for us. We were a little unlucky, but that’s football. We need to recharge during the break.

“We wanted to switch play because they’re so big and strong. We created chances doing that, but not as many as I imagined.

“We tried to play our game, but were not fluid and found it difficult to move the ball. We must find a solution together.”

Leicester are flying high in the UCL, having won three and drawn one of their four games in the group stages.

But the defending champions sit 14th in the Premier League and Ranieri said he would be speaking to his players about the problems they face.

He told BBC Sport: “We tried to do our match. The first half wasn’t so good, the second was better. Today it wasn’t so easy. We maybe played too much in the Champions League.

“For the first time we were not fluid and it was very tough. It is strange for us. We have to speak to find solution together. I am unhappy because we lost our home record.

“We have to stay together as we did last season when everything was right.”

Mourinho: We Don’t Need Ibrahimovic To Score

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho has revealed he is the least concerned if Zlatan Ibrahimovic finds the net or not, after his impressive performance against Swansea.

Mike Van der Hoorn’s second half goal was mere consolation after the veteran striker’s double followed Paul Pogba’s opener.

Ibrahimovic’s brace of goals ended his six match run without a goal, though Mourinho played down his team’s dependence on the forward.

“He’s a great player for the team,” Mourinho, who served his one-match touchline ban in the stands, told MUTV. “Okay today he scored goals, he didn’t in the past few matches, but that doesn’t matter at all.

“One thing is a striker who doesn’t score goals and doesn’t do anything else. Another thing is a striker that doesn’t score goals but does everything else.

“During this period where he was not scoring goals he did everything else for the team. So I’m very happy that he’s back to scoring.”

United played with a back four of Phil Jones, Ashley Young, Matteo Darmian and Marcos Rojo in south Wales, only conceding once the three points were all but secured.

“I’m really pleased,” Mourinho added. “I think for all of us from the United side it was a calm day.

“I think since the first minute we felt that we were in the game, that we were stable and that we were in control.

“The players were really good in their focus, in their effort, in their concentration.

“Following the gameplan I think they were really good and I’m very happy for all of them, but especially for people like Ashley Young, playing outside his position, and Phil Jones – brave guy to say ‘I’m ready for the team’ when he wasn’t ready.

“After two or three months without kicking a ball he was ready only [in the head], but [in the head] is where it matters.

“I’m happy for Marcos playing his third consecutive match as a central defender, I’m happy for Matteo because left-back is not his position, so the defensive line showed great personality. I’m pleased for them.”

Mourinho Bemoans Mentality Of Some United Players

Featured Image

Manchester United managed, Jose Mourinho has hit out at some of his players for their mentality and reluctance to compete after their victory over Swansea.

The Portuguese manager fielded a makeshift back four due to late withdrawals from Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw, with Daley Blind sitting on the bench.

Manchester United snapped a four-game winless streak in the Premier League with a 3-1 away win against Swansea and are sixth on the table.

Ashley Young, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian made up the back four, and Mourinho had some words for players who deemed themselves unfit on the weekend.

“I have a friend who is a big tennis player and he tells me when he remembered more the times he plays with pain than the times he plays without pain,” Mourinho said.

“To compete you have to go to the limit. It is cultural for some – and that is not my culture. More than me, it is Man United.

“We have players with problems. At every sport – and I know because I have friends in others sports and they play at the highest level in their sport, and how many times they play when you are not 100 per cent.”

United are sixth in the Premier League after 11 matches, eighth points adrift of leaders Liverpool heading into the international break.

Rose: Knicks Need Better Defending

Featured Image

Derrick Rose’s addition to the New York Knicks had everyone wondering how the team would play in offense, apparently we were worried about the wrong thing.

After six games this season it is clear to all what the Knicks need to improve on and it is the other aspect of the game. Defense.

In their recent loss on Sunday, the New York franchise allowed the Utah Jazz get 65 points in the second half of a 114-109 loss. They left the court with the worst defense in the NBA statistically.

The Knicks struggled particularly to defend the pick-and-roll against the Jazz, affording George Hill to create several open looks for his teammates with the play. The Jazz made 24 of 38 shots after halftime.

“We gave this game away,” Anthony said after New York fell to 2-4.

Rose, who had another strong floor game (18 points, 8 assists), believes that defense will be a barometer for the Knicks all season.

“Our defense is everything with this team, nothing else,” he said. “Offensively we’re going to be fine, we’re going to find spots. We’re going to find spots to really play our game. It’s defensively, everybody playing on a string, everybody communicating, and everybody being on the same page [that is important].”
