Lt. Col. Abu Ali: The Painful Death Of A Gallant Soldier

Lt. Col. Abu Ali: The Painful Death Of A Gallant Soldier, By Michael Jegede

The news of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Abu Ali, said to be the most gallant commander and efficient fighter in the Nigerian Army’s battle to crush the members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect, was received with pang of shock, tears, anguish and lamentations by Nigerians. It was really shocking to hear that the celebrated young valiant soldier was killed by the same deadly terrorists, even after they are said to have been technically defeated.

This piece was written by Michael Jegede. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

The late Abu Ali, an indigene of Kogi State and recipient of the Chief of Army Staff Award for exceptional bravery and excellence, led the army units that recovered Gamboru-Ngala, Baga and a number of communities from the heartless and ruthless insurgents in the North-East. According to military authorities, he died on Friday during an encounter with suspected Boko Haram extremists that attacked 119 Battalion, Nigerian Army location at Mallam Fatori in Borno State.

A statement released on Saturday by Army spokesman, Sani Usman, to confirm Ali’s death stated: “Yesterday (Friday) at about 10.00pm suspected Boko Haram terrorists attacked a 119 Battalion Nigerian Army location at Mallam Fatori, northern Borno State. The troops fought gallantly and repelled the attack, killing 14 Boko Haram terrorists. Unfortunately, we lost an officer and four soldiers, while four other soldiers sustained various degrees of injuries during the encounter. One of those killed in action, was Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Abu Ali, the Commanding Officer of 272 Task Force Tank Battalion.”

While mourning the late Ali, his colleagues who worked relentlessly with him to confront Boko Haram terrorists in the North-Eastern region, described him as a gallant, battle tested and a trusted and patriotic soldier of the Nigerian Army. In a statement on Saturday, the Theatre Command Centre of Operation Lafiya Dole in Maiduguri said Ali, nicknamed, Sarkin Yaki (Chief Warrior), “served the nation with unwavering commitment and dedication, paying the ultimate price so that millions can sleep on their beds in peace. We are deeply pained at the loss of one so selfless and committed to routing the misguided terrorists from the North of the country.” The centre further noted that Ali served as “the face of the campaign against Boko Haram which embodied commitment, loyalty, service and hope for a better, peaceful and prosperous nation.” It added that the deceased was “a source of inspiration to us and millions of Nigerians praying for the speedy end of the insurgency. At this point we pray for his family and the Nigerian Army that God gives them the fortitude to bear the loss.”

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello commiserated with the family of Etsu of Bassa-Nge Kingdom, Brigadier General Abu Ali (Rtd.) over the demise of Lt. Col. Muhammad Abu Ali. The late Lt. Col Ali was the son of the retired Brigadier General, a widely respected traditional title holder in Kogi State, who was governor of Bauchi State between August 1990 and January 1992 during the military administration of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB).

The condolence message of Kogi governor was contained in a statement signed by his the Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Petra Akinti Onyegbule, describing the death as unfortunate and a colossal loss to the people of Kogi State and Nigerians in general.

According to Governor Bello, the late Commanding Officer “was a gallant officer who served the nation with his all and paid the supreme price by laying down his life for the peace of the country.” He maintained that “the late Col. will be remembered for his sacrifice and commitment to the cause of the Nigerian Army to rid the Country of insurgency which has been of concern to everyone.” The statement also said: “Governor Bello extended his condolences to the Etsu of Bassa-Nge Kingdom over this devastating loss. Allah giveth and He taketh, from Him we came and to Him we return. May Allah give you the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss. May Almighty Allah grant late Lt. Col. Muhammed Abu Aljannah Firdaus. Ameen.”

Beside the Chief of Staff Award bestowed on him for his efficiency on the battlefield, the late Ali equally bagged accelerated promotion from being a Major to a Lieutenant Colonel and there were insinuations that he was to soon be promoted to Colonel before the painful and ill-fated death came to cut his promising life short. During his official decoration with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in September last year, Buratai applauded Ali, an expert in the handling of armoured tanks, for his “courage, bravery and exceptional performance in the fight against the Boko Haram terrorists”. His elevation and recognition for the significant roles he played in taking out the Islamic fundamentalists from many of the areas they held with iron grip across the North-East, was fully supported and appreciated by his co-fighters, who so much cherished him for his great display of professionalism and unmatched bravery on the battlefront.

A special tribute to the deceased hero by Col. Mustapha Anka, Deputy Director, Department of Army Public Relations, and spokesperson, 7 Division Nigerian Army, Borno State reads: “An officer and a gentleman. Cherished, admired and adored. By officers, soldiers and civilians. As angels adore God in heaven. Your transition, a shocking transition. Was like a candlelight blown out by the wind. An evil wind in an evil world. Though your memories remain. Forever in our hearts. A great hero of our time. The scourge of the enemies. A commander, a lion and a desert fox. Feared by cowards, revered by adversaries. Whenever your name echoed in the battlefield. We have lost a conqueror, a brave officer. Whose name was engraved with diamond. For diamonds are forever. We are in pain, an enormous pain. As your blood flows in our veins. We will never be the same. Your death will never be in vain. We part to meet, this I’m sure of. We will regroup to part no more, this I know. Because from Him we come, and to Him we return. Rest in peace ‘ma men’.”

While eulogising the late Lt. Col. Abu Ali, President Muhammadu Buhari promised that his sacrifice and that of other fallen heroes will not be in vain. Buhari declared that their memories would perpetually be engraved in the hearts and minds of the Nigerian people for whose sake they laid down their lives.

The president’s promise must be backed with action. The families of Lt. Col. Abu Ali and other members of the armed forces who have sacrificed their lives for us to live, in the fierce battle against terrorists in the northern region, must not be abandoned. The government must do much to compensate and appreciate our great military men (both the living and the dead) for making the supreme sacrifice to ensure the protection of the nation’s territorial integrity.

Also, greater effort must be made to motivate the military officers in the battlefield. The intensity of activities of the Boko Haram radicals has taken a dimension in recent weeks that calls for serious concern from the government, especially coming after several months of relative success by the troops of the Nigerian Armed Forces, in which the late Abu Ali played a major role. Therefore, all the motivation needed to further boost the morale of the soldiers should be given to them, to enhance their capacity to ensure the final defeat of the Boko Haram devotees, whose nefarious activities have left over 20,000 innocent citizens dead and destroyed property worth about $9 billion since 2009.

Big Things To Happen At United, Once We Gel, Says Ibrahimovic

Featured Image

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is sure all Manchester United need to achieve big things is to gel and click.

Manchester United went four games in the Premier League without a win, before they finally beat Swansea 3-1 away.

They also recorded a 2-1 loss to Fenerbache in the Europa league after a disappointing display and might not qualify for the group stages.

And he is convinced United can produce similar displays in the future as the squad get to know each other better.

“We have a mix of ages – experienced players, young players, the quality is there,” he told Inside United magazine. “I think we can achieve big things.

“I said after the Liverpool game and I said it before that we just need to find the ‘click’ where we find each other.

“Every day that goes by, the more you get to know each other and it becomes like a family. You know what you need – I know what I need to do to get the maximum out of my team-mates and the same thing on the other side, they know what they need to bring that out of me.

“The pieces are there, we just need to put the puzzle together.

“It will click. We just wait for the moment when everything is clicking among each other, not only inside the pitch, but outside it. I don’t say things are bad because things are good.

“We’ve been a little unlucky in certain games but we believe and, when you believe, it will come. I like to train hard, that’s my philosophy. If you train hard, you get what you want to get. Hard work pays back, according to me.”

Speaking of his own worrying form, Ibrahimovic acknowledged he could have done more as he settled into life in England.

He added: “I think I could have scored a couple more goals than I have done – I missed pretty good chances which I didn’t see myself doing. But it’s a different game here.

“With my performance, I am happy. I know I can do more, I know the team can do more and I want to do more and I will do more.”

FG Set To Shut Down MMM, Other Wonder Banks In Nigeria

Featured Image

The Federal Government of Nigeria is on the verge to wield the big stick on the insupportable activities of MMM and other wonder banks operating in the country – as regulatory authorities have unveiled plan to put them out of circulation.

READ ALSO: ‘MMM Is A Fraud, Don’t Patronize It’ – CBN Warns Nigerians

Speaking on Monday, the Managing Director of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim, stated that the regulators have set up a Committee to stem the nefarious activities of the fraudsters across the country.

Speaking during the NDIC Special Day at the 2016 Lagos International Trade Fair, the NDIC boss griped that in spite of pleas and warnings, Nigerians are still patronising the illegal fund managers.

Represented by the Director, Claims Resolution Department of the Corporation, Mr Bello Shittu, the NDIC boss, however, warned that all those who patronise these illegal funds managers are doing so at their own risk.

The Sun quoted him as saying:

“I wish to sound a word of caution to members of the public on the activities of illegal fund managers, otherwise known as Wonder Banks. It is worrisome to note that despite repeated advice, many unsuspecting members of the public are still falling victims to the mouth-watering interest being offered by these illegal fund managers.

Once again, I must sound a word of warning that those who patronise these illegal funds managers are doing so at their own risk. For the avoidance of doubt, these illegal fund managers or wonder banks are neither licensed by CBN nor under the NDIC deposit insurance coverage.

Members of the public are therefore advised to patronise only banking institutions that display the NDIC sticker: “Insured by NDIC” in their banking halls or entrances. However, the regulatory authorities have set up an inter-agency committee under the Financial Services Regulatory Coordinating Committee (FRSCC) to stem the nefarious activities of these fraudster across the nation”.

This is coming barely a week after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) warned Nigerians against patronising the scheme, MMM.

The Apex bank, via its head of the consumer protection, Kadija Kassim, stated that their activities were not regulated by it or any verified institution.

Kassim’s warning comes barely after the Minister of Solid Minerals and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, dissociated himself from the scheme, saying he has nothing to do with it or any other online financial aid community, projects or contracts.

Niger Delta Militants Blow Up Oil Pipeline In Warri

Featured Image

Militants in Niger Delta have bombed a state-run oil pipeline near the southern port city of Warri, Delta State, the second attack within a week, officials said.

READ ALSO: Niger Delta Avengers Blow Up Bonny Crude Oil Export Line

According to AFP, the explosion occurred this morning, November 8, and is the second attack in one week.

“The line which was undergoing repair after the previous attack … was billed for commissioning either today or tomorrow,” before the latest attack, the chairman of Batan community Dickson Ogugu told AFP.

The community leader also said that four surveillance guards deployed to protect the Trans Forcados export line narrowly escaped death after the militants opened fire on them.

He added: “The hoodlums after chasing them from the spot came down from their speedboat, planted dynamite on swamp boogie, barge, crane and on the line.”

“Unfortunately, only the dynamite on the barge exploded and immediately sank into the water. As I speak to you, the military are at the scene of the incident trying to dismantle the other dynamites.”

The bombing had early been confirmed by an army officer, who pleaded anonymity.

“We heard the shots in the middle of the night, but as you know, we do not patrol the area at night, so there was nothing we could do,” the Army official said.

The line was previously bombed by the ‘sabotaging’ militants, last week, after President Muhammadu Buhari had met with their representatives to discuss how to end the issues bedeviling the region.

The state-owned Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC) operates the pipeline which receives crude from the Batan flowstation and feeds the Forcados export terminal.

Appeal Court Abolishes ‘Monthly’ Environmental Sanitation In Lagos

Featured Image

The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos has abolished the monthly environmental sanitation in the State – saying it is illegal for the State government to restrict people’s movement on that day.

READ ALSO: Environmental Sanitation Exercise Holds Tomorrow In Lagos

PM News quoted the Appellant court as ordering the government of Lagos to discontinue the exercise, which is held every last Saturday of the month between 7 am and 10 am – saying that there is currently no written law to that effect.

Delivering his verdict during the weekend, Justice Ugochukwu Ogakwu of the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division held that in the absence of a written law prescribing the same, the governor’s directive for people in Lagos State to stay at home and not to move was unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional.

The judgement followed a suit brought before the court by a citizen, Faith Okafor (Appellant) against the Lagos State Government (Respondent).

The court restrained the Lagos State Government and its affiliates from further arresting the anyone whatsoever on the basis of a purported environmental sanitation offence or trying anyone in the Special Offences Court without conforming to the dictates of the Constitution.

Following due consideration of this appeal by the Appellant against the Respondent, Justice Ogakwu said:

“I have arrived at the inexorable conclusion that the appeal is meritorious. The same succeeds and is allowed by me. The Ruling of the lower court in Suit No. M/548/2013: FAITH OKAFOR vs. LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT & ANOR. delivered on 1st July 2014 is hereby set aside.

“In its stead and for good order sake, judgment is hereby entered for the Appellant against the Respondents in the following terms: It is hereby declared that the arrest and detention and transportation of the Appellant in the back of a vehicle which is of a metal cage with very little ventilation and light “Black Maria” by officials and/or agents of the 1st Respondent (KAI Brigade) on 25th May 2013 for a purported environmental sanitation offence violates the Appellant’s fundamental rights to respect for the dignity of her person, personal liberty and freedom of movement as provided under Sections 34, 35 and 41 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, and is therefore illegal and unconstitutional.”

Justice Ogakwu declared that the purported trial and conviction of the Appellant for a purported environmental sanitation offence violates the Appellant’s fundamental rights to fair hearing as provided under Section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, and is therefore unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional.

The court further declared that in the absence of a written law prescribing the same, the 1st Respondent’s directive for people in Lagos State to stay at home and not to move about thereby restricting movement of persons in Lagos State within the hours of 7.00am to 10.00am on the last Saturday of every month is unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional.

“The Respondents are hereby restrained from further restricting the Appellant’s or anyone’s movement within Lagos State at any time or day whatsoever on the basis of environmental sanitation without there being a written law prescribing the same.

“The Respondents are restrained from further arresting the Appellant or anyone whatsoever on the basis of a purported environmental sanitation offence or trying anyone in the Special Offences Court without conforming to the dictates of the Constitution. The Appellant is entitled to the costs of this appeal which I assess and fix at N100, 000.00,” he ruled.
