The defender has started just two premier league games under Jose Mourinho and has been deemed surplus to requirements.

The 26-year-old Darmian was a regular fixture in Manchester United’s starting XI, but after two seasons in England, he could be heading back to Italy.

The Italian international was signed by the Red Devils from Torino at the start of the 2015-16 campaign, having previously spent time with Milan, Padova and Palermo.

Ibrahimovic Is Missed By Sweden, Says Deschamps

Featured Image

Sweden will play France in a world cup qualifiers match and Didier Deschamps believes they lack the bite without Zlatan Ibrahimovic in their ranks.

The veteran striker ended his 15-year international career with Sweden following their elimination from the Euro 2016 with just one point from all three games.

Sweden have started life without the Manchester United striker, getting seven points from three games, with all of their five goals scored by five different players.

However, Deschamps is confident France can handle Sweden as they appear depleted in the absence of their enigmatic former leader.

“Sweden are different,” he told a news conference.

“We know the importance he has in all the teams he plays for, including Sweden where he was very effective. He changes their game.

“When you have a player like Zlatan, the team plays for him. At times, he receives balls that he should not receive. Even if they have a good collective, they always rely on him.

“There are other players, other attackers who are there, they have quality. But on paper, in fact, I think Sweden with Zlatan are more competitive.”

After Friday’s encounter, Les Bleus will take on Ivory Coast in a friendly on Tuesday, while Sweden will take on Hungary.

“Neymar Could Cost Up To €430m” – Father

Featured Image

Any club interested in signing Neymar, including Real Madrid would have to pay at least €430million according to the forward’s father.

The Brazilian was a subject of transfer rumours in the summer, with Real Madrid and PSG among clubs interested in acquiring him. However, after signing a five-year extension at the Camp Nou, the rumours were quelled.

Neymar Snr says the 24-year-old never had any desire to quit Camp Nou and is unlikely to consider any future offer, even if a club comes forward with a world-record bid.

“The offers didn’t reach him; they came to me,” he told Mundo Deportivo when asked about the bids. “I know what Neymar wanted, and that was to stay.

“I receive a lot of people in my office in Barcelona. Of course, some of them come to know if Neymar has a future at another club.

“But I’m very clear on this: to try to get him out of Barcelona, you have to try to take away the happiness that he has here.

“If he wanted to go after a financial benefit, everyone knows he would not be at Barca. But Neymar is happy at the club, he has made very strong friendships with his team-mates.

“Madrid were interested through intermediaries and I always told everyone the same: you would have to pay the release clause of €190million, plus the taxes on that, and with all the rest it could end up being close to €430m.”

MMM Issues Important Information To Participants As CBN Intensifies Crackdown

The Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox  popularly known as ‘MMM’ is calling on all of its participants to wise up – not to throw caution to the wind – when making cash transfers or deposits in the wake of a crackdown by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

An ‘important’ information issued on Twitter via an account that shares its ideology read:

The information is coming barely a day after the House of Representatives ordered law enforcement agencies and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to track down and arrest promoters of the “questionable” investment scheme.

The crackdown order was received with disapproval and condemnation from aggrieved Nigerians – who are of the opinion that the legislators have abandoned several pressing issues in the country for a trivial issue like MMM.

mmm-cbn-crackdownConsequently, there are strong indications that the Apex Bank has begun to blacklist all banking transactions related to “MMM”.

Bear in mind, the MMM, is a deposit money scheme, that promises 30 per cent return on investment for any money put into the scheme within 30 days.

In spite of its notoriety among Nigerians, critics still inferred that the business is a Ponzi scheme because its operators use money from earlier investors to pay later investors.

Checks show that Nigerians benefiting from the scheme are “very passionate” and any forceful crackdown on the scheme could breed serious national security concerns.

The war between Nigeria and its citizens – especially the downtrodden – might just be heating up in the wake of the current economic recession in the West African country.

Mikel Could Leave Chelsea In January

Featured Image

Nigeria’s John Obi Mikel has stated he will think about his future at Chelsea when the January window opens should Conte continue to leave him out of the squad.

Since the arrival of Kante to the Bridge from Leicester, the Nigerian midfielder has not featured for Chelsea. Kante and Matic have been utilised in the heart of the 3-4-3 midfield, with Chelsea garnering 25 points from 11 EPL matches.

Mikel has been a first-team regular at Stamford Bridge since arriving from Lyn in 2006, but he acknowledged his stay could come to an end when the transfer window re-opens, should his situation not change.

“We will wait and see what happens in January,” he said, as quoted by ESPN FC.

“For the first time in my career, this is happening to me and I have to stand up and deal with it.

“It is what it is but I’m training hard every day and I always wish the team the best and I am happy we are doing well.

“I’ve been at Chelsea a long time. Managers come and go, players come and go. I’ve been at Chelsea a long time and these things happen in football. So we will have to make that decision when January comes.”

Mikel’s contract expires at the end of the campaign and reports have already suggested Conte is reluctant to offer him a new deal.

NNPC Stops Importation Of Kerosene

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has stopped the importation of Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK) into the country for at least three months running.

This is contained in the Apex oil firm’s recent financial and operations report.

The August 2016 edition of the report indicated that the last time that the corporation imported kerosene into Nigeria under the Direct-Sale Direct-Purchase/Offshore Processing Agreement was in May.

Further analysis of the report as issued yesterday indicated that in June, July and August this year, the NNPC did not get a single litre of DPK under the DSDP/OPA.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, had in February, announced the replacement of the crude swap arrangement with what he called the Direct-Sale Direct-Purchase framework (DSDP), which took off in April.

The DSDP was adopted to replace the crude swap initiative and the offshore processing arrangement in a bid to entrench transparency in the crude oil for product transaction by the country’s national oil firm.

p style=”text-align: justify”>The Punch  sighted some documents at the Abuja headquarters of the NNPC, which showed that by implementing the DSDP, Nigeria was able to save $336.4m (N102.6bn at the official exchange rate of N305 to $1) between April and July 2016.

However, the latest report of the corporation showed that while the national oil firm continued the DSDP framework for the importation of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as petrol, it discontinued the importation of DPK through the channel.

It was not indicated in the report if the oil firm was still importing kerosene through other channels but the report averred that the corporation produced DPK from the country’s refineries.

Meanwhile, the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, NNPC, Mr. Garba-Deen Mohammed, had stated that he would find out if the firm had stopped kerosene importation, particularly through the DSDP channel.

Has America Elected Their Own Buhari?

Has America Elected Their Own Buhari? By Abimbola Adelakun

The newly elected President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has things in common with President Muhammadu Buhari. In fact, the US elections produced several interesting parallels between Nigeria and America; one is the divisiveness occasioned by some of the most virulent rhetoric ever traded during a campaign. In the age of social media, it is uncertain the practice of democracy will ever retain any display of civility. In Nigeria last year and in the US this year, I witnessed much bad blood pumped by people who would have to reformat their relationships after the elections. It is interesting how Americans, like Nigerians, also voted “change.” Both also clamoured for an anti-establishment candidate.

This piece was written by Abimbola Adelakun. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

Recently, Buhari admitted that after he had been elected, and he saw the depth of rot in Nigeria’s government, he felt like running away. I believe after the initial euphoria of winning, and Trump settles down to work, he will have his own “Buhari Moment” even though he may not be tactless enough to admit it publicly. Buhari’s confession, incidentally, did not elicit much shock from the nation; I guess it was because we are used to his jeremiad. Such admissions only reiterate what we have known by now: he was never quite prepared for the Presidency, he only wanted to be President.

READ ALSO: Who Hillary Clinton Epp? – Reno Omokri

Buhari, shortly after he won the election, panicked and started saying he had no magic wand to correct Nigeria’s problems. To think that only weeks earlier, he had been campaigning like he had one. He became President only to find he had a real job, one he could not do by standing on the sidelines and griping about “corruption” all day. Sometime after, he also claimed he would have been a much better performer if he had age on his side. Trump is another unprepared president who made it this far largely because he had a celebrity reputation that preceded both him or his abilities. I do not think when he declared his interest to run he imagined he would actually win but along the line he successfully keyed into racist, sexist, nativist, and extreme rightist sentiment pervading a section of American demographics. His demagoguery and bigotry might be shocking to folks who expect better of America but it resonated with Americans who fear a white genocide: That liberal ideologies that permit immigrants, terrorism and refugees threaten whiteness.

Trump that has no serious idea how a nation works in the 21st century garnered attention because he ramped up denigrating rhetoric. There are, of course, Americans who genuinely believed in Trump and (naively, I think) assume if he would run the nation like his businesses (at least the ones that succeeded), America may emerge “great” again. There are others who wanted an outsider, someone who does not typify the rot and corruption of Washington. It remains to be seen how that works out for the US; at least it has not worked for Nigeria. Trump will soon realise it takes more than personal charisma, “body language,” braggadocio, and ranting about the incumbent to run a complex society.

READ ALSO: #Trumpwins: Nigerians Seek To Witness Wole Soyinka ‘Tear His Passport On Air’

I look back at the 2015 elections and still marvel how Buhari’s handlers shielded him from the cerebral aspect of the contest. He shunned debates and his supporters were too enamoured with his mystique to press him for an agenda. He went all over the country with an unrealistic manifesto. The few times he granted an interview, we were alarmed at his moldiness. When he said he would stabilise the oil market and make naira equal to a dollar, it was obvious he was an economic virgin. On the campaign trail, Trump has made equally laughable comments about the economy. During the three debates he had with his opponent, Hillary Clinton, he was out of his depth on any issue and only managed to bluster through.

Some of Trump’s brightest economic ideas have been about protectionism, most of which does not take into account the reality of how trade policies have actually benefited the US. If he tries to execute some of the ideas he has been flaunting for months, he would be shocked how it would backfire. Some of the arguments made for Buhari was also made for Trump – that he would employ hands far more capable than him to help steer the country. From afar, it seems like a feasible idea but a leader with only an elementary knowledge of governance will find himself reeling at the complexity of his job and soon begin to falter. Buhari took almost a year to form a cabinet and when he eventually did, nobody was wowed. Trump, a narcissist, may even be less rigorous and instead build the government around himself just like he did his campaigns.

READ ALSO: Nigerians Tear TB Joshua Apart On Twitter Over ‘Wrong’ Prophesy

The fear of what Trump portends, however, is much more than whether he will tank the US economy or not. Trump also happens to be one of the most divisive human beings to run an election in contemporary times. Because he receives support from white nationalists such as the Ku Klux Klan, they will now be emboldened to crawl out of the woodwork and declare an open season of racism. For Muslims, ethnic and racial minorities, women, and the disabled, and all the groups that have been a target for white supremacist vitriol under President Barack Obama, the next four years will be a fight to retain their dignity in Trump’s America. Trump already described himself as the “law and order” candidate and anyone who knows the history of America understands what kind of dog whistle that is. These are interesting times.

We can argue that America has strong democratic institutions but no matter how entrenched the habits of democracy, no system can survive abuses by despots and dictators. Trump boasted that if he won he would tweak current libel laws against the media. A presidential candidate threatening what is tantamount to Decree 4 is almost unthinkable. When a leader says he will toy with mechanisms of checks and balances, and still gets a majority backing, it is only a matter of time before they begin to weaken their supposedly strong institutions. Also, for a man whose “make America great again” slogan was premised on nostalgia of a time when minorities were excluded from national patrimony, I am anxious about acts of violence and oppression this newly empowered majority will wreak on minorities; and which the majority will condone as part of the project of “making America great again”. Under Adolf  Hitler’s Germany, that was part of how evil became banal.

For Trump who acts unhinged, and lacks self-control, it also remains to be seen how America will use its instruments of democracy to reel him in. The European philosopher, Slavoj Zizek, said it was better Trump won because it would implode the system and from there something new might emerge. Zizek is a thinker I respect but such Dadaist approach to political philosophy ignores that there are material consequences to democratic choices. Like I told some of my American friends who found the idea of Trump as an anti-establishment revolt tempting, change is not always useful. Nigerians faced a similar dilemma last year and we allowed ourselves to be seduced by the idea that we were voting a man who would pull down the corrupt establishment. Just look at how it has worked for us so far.

Meanwhile, I congratulate Clinton for her valiant efforts. With Trump’s emergence both the Democratic and Republican parties will rethink their disconnect from voters. Clinton worked hard for the presidency and for a country that prides itself on meritocracy, she ought to have won. Anyway, it was not meant to be but I am proud of her for putting up a brave fight.

70-Year-Old Man Arrested For Raping 8-Year-Old Girl

A 70-year-old man, Gabriel Akindele, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly raping a deaf and dumb eight-year-old girl.

The incident happened on Tuesday on Michael Ayegusi Street, Owode Ijako, in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the state.  The Police Public Relations Officer for Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspect was arrested after the victim’s mother complained to police.

He said, “The mother, who noticed an unusual behavior from the girl after the incident, used sign language to inquire from her daughter. The girl informed her of the incident, which prompted the mother to report the matter to the police.”

Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said after a complaint was made about the matter, the Divisional Police Officer, Sango Ota, Akinsola Ogunwale, sent detectives to the scene and the old man was subsequently arrested. According to him, the suspect allegedly confessed to the crime.

It was discovered that the suspect lured the girl to the toilet where he raped her.

Boko Haram Spared Chibok Girls From Abuse And Rape – Source

Featured Image

Contrary to what has been said, the 21 Chibok schoolgirls freed by Boko Haram militants last month say they were not abused or raped during the two-and-a-half years of captivity in northeast Nigeria, Reuters quoted a source close to the presidency as saying on Wednesday.

Boko Haram Releases 21 Chibok Girls To Nigerian Gov’t

Reports from human rights group, including Amnesty International had claimed that quite a number of the girls kidnapped by the Islamist militant group were used as sex slaves, fighters and even suicide bombers.

However, Reuters said a confidential report based on their two-week debriefing prepared for President Muhammadu Buhari indicated that the schoolgirls were treated well by the militants of the Islamic death cult.

What President Buhari Told The Just-Released 21 Chibok Girls (Full Remarks)

The girls, who were released last month, are now being held in a secret location in Abuja where they have been undergoing psychological assessment and rehabilitation.

114 Chibok Girls Feared Dead, Married Off Or Radicalised As Negotiations Continue

In the report, it was gathered that State health workers also confirmed that the girls were not sexually abused while in captivity, as they all tested negative for sexually transmitted diseases.

“The girls said the Boko Haram men always assured them that they would eventually go back home to their families, and were careful about what they said around the girls and how they treated them,” said the presidential source.

“They had been fed well and regularly, until the military cut off Boko Haram supplies,” the government source added.

The 21 recently released girls said that while the Boko Haram militants advised them to marry and convert to Islam, they were not forced into doing so, according to the report.

“The girls said that those of them who did not agree to marry were used as house girls (servants),” the source said.

When shown pictures of 142 of their still missing classmates, the girls said 61 had married Boko Haram militants, eight had died during Nigerian air force strikes, three during childbirth, and one of an unknown cause, the report found.

Martinez: Kompany Is Not Injured

Featured Image

Injury prone Vincent Kompany is not injured and was omitted from the squad that played Netherlands as a precaution, according to Belgium coach Roberto Martinez.

Muscular problems have hindered the defender’s playing time with the national squad, with groin and calf problems keeping him out for up to 13 months.

The Manchester City man was replaced by debutant Christian Kabasele in the 1-1 draw against Netherlands.

“There is no injury to Vincent Kompany,” Martinez told reporters afterwards.

“We did not want to take any risks with him and Kompany did not feel well after the warm-up.

“I want every player to be 100 per cent. It’s too early to say if he will be ready for Sunday.”

The situation mirrors his removal at halftime in the 1-0 EFL cup loss to Manchester United, with manager Pep Guardiola confirming afterwards that the 30-year-old “told me he could not play anymore”.

Tite: We Have A Plan To Stop Messi

Featured Image

Brazil head coach, Tite has revealed he has a plan to stop Messi and does not believe a single player can change the game.

The Selecao will play the Albiceleste at the Mineirao in a world cup qualifying match this week.

Tite has insisted he cannot allow his side to focus solely on the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“You can limit their impact. You can try to decrease the number of chances, but I am not telling you how I will try to do that,” Tite told reporters in Belo Horizonte on Wednesday.

“There are several players can make a difference and decide games.

“I do not agree that victory depends on a single player. At some point he may shine, but only because the collective is working well.

“On the pitch there will be [Philippe] Coutinho, [Gonzalo] Higuain, [Angel] Di Maria, Douglas Costa, Gabriel Jesus. There are many players with great technical qualities that, in an individual play, in a moment of creation, can make the big difference.

Tite’s side have won four successive qualifiers since his arrival and lead Conmebol’s race to Russia 2018. They are five points clear of sixth-placed Argentina, who are winless in their past three matches.

“The fact that Argentina are outside the qualification places doesn’t boost our confidence,” Tite added.

“We have not qualified yet. If you look four rounds back we were back where they are now. We are all aware of this.”
