Residents of Ilupewo community, Ado-Odo-Otta Local Government area of Ogun State have been urged by the Comissioner of Police for the State, Ahmed Iliyasu to remain calm after they reportedly received a letter from suspected armed robbers about an impending visit.
The letters were posted on the house doors and gates informing residents in the community to keep Christmas gifts for them as they would be visiting soon. Some of the residents have abandoned their homes following the letter while most that remain have been living in fear.
According to reports, the residents woke up to discover several of such letters posted to their doorposts on Wednesday, telling them that the robbers were coming for the operation because of the coming Christmas and New Year festivities.
The letter which had the following incomplete phone numbers – 0702288949, 080449930, stressed that they (the robbers) didn’t want to hear excuses from residents over non-availability of money at home.
The said letter was typed in Yoruba language, and introduced the robbers as ‘Strong men of the road that own the night,’ urged the community residents to ensure they keep money at home always. They also vowed to deal mercilessly with any resident who claims he does not have money as advanced notice had already been given to prepare them.
However, in a statement released on Thursday, the Comissioner of Police assured the residents that the police was working effortlessly to stop the planned robbery.
He stated that about 60 houses had the letters posted at their door and that the residents reported the matter at the Sango Police Station. He also called on the residents to remain calm as the security operatives were up to task in dealing with the criminals.
“We are on top of the situation and security has been beefed up in the community,” the CP stated.
