Boko Haram: US Prevents Nigeria From Buying ‘Fighter’ Aircraft From Brazil

Featured Image

There are strong indications that the United States has prevented the government of Nigeria from buying a fighter ground attack aircraft to aid the ongoing war against Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East.

Sources close to the polity have squealed that the US prevented the Nigerian military from acquiring the A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft from Brazil.

The Punch quoted a top source in the Presidency as saying that Nigeria had sealed a deal with the South American nation on the acquisition of the light attack aircraft when the US – which produced the aircraft – prevented the deal.

The source said, “The issue of the arms embargo against the country by the US is still in force. The US is helping in the area of training; they also have some of their platforms like the C130 which is so crucial in the campaign and operations of the military.

“However, the surprising thing is that they have again prevented the country from acquiring A29, Super Tucano light attack aircraft from Brazil.

“The US sold the aircraft to the Brazilians but they gave a condition that they could only be resold to other countries with the consent of the US. This means that Brazil must seek the permission of the US to sell.

“The Brazilians were enthusiastic when they visited Nigeria and the impression we had was that they were ready to sell, provided the funds were available.

“Curiously, they later developed cold feet because America started quoting human rights issues to block the deal.

“The aircraft are unique because the plan was to use the A-29 Super Tucano, Fighter Ground Attack aircraft to replace the ailing Alpha jets.

“The Alpha jets are old now; the Alpha jets and the MI helicopter gunships are the two major platforms deployed in the North-East.”

The proscription may have dimmed insinuations that the US was relaxing the arms embargo on Nigeria.

p style=”text-align: justify”>US Congressman Darrel Isah had said shortly after a meeting with service chiefs and defence authorities in the country in August 2015 that the US had commenced the process of relaxing the embargo on military assistance to the country under the Leahy Law.

The Leahy Law prohibits the US defence sector from providing military assistance to countries involved in rights violations.

‘If Soyinka Does Not Tear His Green Card, He Is Very Dishonourable’, Says David-West

Featured Image

Following the emergence of Donald Trump as President-elect of the United States, former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Prof Tam David-West, has taken a swipe at Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, urging him to live up to his threat of tearing up his green card.

Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka was quoted as saying he will tear his green card if Donald Trump is elected the president of the United States

Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka was quoted as saying he will tear his green card if Donald Trump is elected the president of the United States

Speaking exclusively with Daily Sun in Ibadan, capital of Oyo state, David-West said:

“I know Wole Soyinka is a honourable man. I am waiting for him to cut his green card and return to Nigeria honourably. If he does not come back, he is very dishonourable. He should keep to his words. It was not necessary for him to make that statement at all.”

Prior to the US presidential election of November 8, Soyinka, a scholar-in-residence at the Institute of American Affairs, New York University, was quoted to have said he would tear up his green card and leave the US if Trump won the poll.

The Guardian UK quoted Soyinka, while addressing Oxford students, as saying:

“If in the unlikely event he (Trump) does win, the first thing he will do is to say all green card holders must reapply to come back into the US. We’ll, I’m not waiting for that. The moment they announce his victory, I will cut my green card myself and start packing up.”

David-West continued:

“There was no need for him to have said that. If he cuts his green card, he will hurt himself not the United States. It because of the green card he works in the US.

“The green card entitles him to work in the US. Without the green card, he cannot have a paid job in the US. It is because of the green card that he has a paid job in America, which translates to thousands of dollars for him; by conversion, it is millions of naira.”

“Why don’t we wait until Trump actually takes office? I am just going about my normal commitments. Let’s put it that way for now.”

The former minister added:

“Now, he has changed his tone. When I read it, I was very upset. He is toying with the intelligence of Nigerians. He said (he’d destroy his green card) if Trump is elected President. The moment Hillary Clinton conceded defeat, Trump is elected. Immediately, Soyinka should have come back to Nigeria.

“I know Wole Soyinka is a honourable man. I am waiting for him to cut his green card and return to Nigeria honourably. If he does not come back, he is very dishonourable. He should keep to his words. It was not necessary for him to make that statement at all.

“In the first instance, he never said he would cut his green card when Donald Trump takes office. He said if he is elected President. So, Soyinka should honourably cut his card and honourably return to Nigeria.”

He, however, dismissed reports saying Soyinka might go to jail if he cut his US green card.

He said: “Somebody said if Wole Soyinka cuts his green card, he (Soyinka) will go to jail. That is not true. He will not go to jail. The green card is his own personal property given to him by the United States Government.”

Why We Resumed Bombings – Avengers Issues Statement

Featured Image

The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) on Sunday issued a statement as regards to why it resumed hostilities on oil facilities within the region.

READ ALSO: Leave Nigeria If You Have Another Country To Go To – Buhari

In a statement issued by the group’s spokesman, Mudoch Agbinibo, on its official website, the militant group said the renewed attack was because the federal government refused to honour the ceasefire it entered into with them to allow for a dialogue on November 1, 2016.

The group also accused the government of using military to undermine the process by ‘unnecessarily’ harassing communities and arresting innocent people in the region.

Read statement below:

DON’T BLAME NDA

We all know that Peace is not the absence of war. Sincerely speaking, the High Command of the Niger Delta Avengers cannot be blamed for the continuous bombing of crude oil export pipelines and other oil installations, since the Government has been relentlessly carrying out military build ups to continuously harass communities and indigenes of the Niger Delta after the November 1st meeting of the PANDEF and President Muhammadu Buhari. We see this as a deliberate move by the military establishment to undermine any effort of dialogue and negotiations with the people of the Niger Delta.

The path to sustain the cessation of hostilities in the region among fighters and structures cannot be achieved overnight, when there are clear cases of deliberate security surge by the Nigerian government.  We ask for understanding on the side of the PANDEF and the general public. The High Command of the NDA is only reacting to government’s deliberate attempts to undermine the process to dialogue and negotiations. It will make a lot of sense on the part of the government of president   Muhammadu Buhari to restrain the security agents/agencies from engaging in activities that are inimical to the process, the people and communities of the Niger Delta. There was high hope and expectations from the people of the Niger Delta after the November 1st meeting between PANDEF and President Muhammadu Buhari for a genuine dialogue and negotiations process to kick-start. Instead the government’s security establishment is busy building up clogs to the process that will place our people at position of weakness which is unacceptable to us and  so, there is bound  to  be equal reaction.

The idea of communicating with our fathers, leaders and royal fathers under the leadership of Papa Edwin Kiagbodo Clark’s PANDEF before acting will only amount to mere propaganda   while the head is being cut off. We believed that our fathers, leaders and royal fathers are ready to meet the government of Nigeria with representatives of IOCs and the neutral observers but not with guns, warships and jet fighters terrorizing their communities which of course is one of the sixteen points key demands presented to Mr. President, So the government should stop the ostrich game.

We did not start this struggle for the sake of bearing arms against the Nigeria state; it is a reaction to many years of orchestrated state economic and constitutional colonialism against a region and its people over six decades. Until the burning issues of resources control, fiscal federalism and inclusive development are addressed no force will stop this struggle even with bare hands. The government of Nigeria is running against time by undermining the resolve of the Niger Delta. The government needs the Niger Delta more than we need the government.

A careful analysis of the directive by general Muhammadu Buhari, to the security agencies to identify militant leaders and their camps shows that, the man do not have any sense of history and apology for the roles he played in the killing of innocent civilians and Ken Saro Wiwa in Ogoni that were carrying out a peaceful protest in 1995.  President Muhammadu Buhari should think before he act on this his fifth journey into national affairs. Those obnoxious strategies like Choke Points, Operations Delta Safe, Operations Crocodiles Smiles etc, are doomed to fail like Operations Hakuri II, he engineered and administered under general Sani Abacha. Even the security hierarchy is also sympathizing with his inhuman dispositions to the Niger Delta question. That is more of the reasons the High Command of the DNA has given the clear directive to all field officers to avoid confrontation with security agencies in their line of duty.

The everyday deployment of military hardwares, houseboat, personnel etc is a dilemma of government insensitivity and incapacity to the legitimate demands by the Niger Delta people since 1994 under general Sani Abacha.

The Niger Delta struggle is the people’s project. So, the more groups that are involved the more the festivity. There will be no cold war with any group and groupings no matter the circumstances of their emergence and their modus operandi.

Conte Is Keeping Me Out Of The Squad, Because I Went To Rio – Mikel

Featured Image

Nigeria international John Obi Mikel has stated he is being punished by Antonio Conte for his decision to play in the Olympics.

The 29-year-old midfielder has not started a game for Chelsea this season since the Olympics, where he won bronze and he insists he will not swap the medal for a spot on the team.

Gernot Rohr, Super Eagles technical adviser claims Conte has frozen the Super Eajgles captain out of the squad due to his decision to opt for the Olympics instead of playing in the preseason.

Mikel is adamant he would not trade that experience for a chance to get back into the Chelsea side, but he feels that such a stance has made him something of a pariah to his manager.

“I have never been a guy who makes excuses in life and never shy away from responsibilities,” the former Lyn man, who scored in Nigeria’s 3-1 World Cup qualifying win over Algeria on Saturday, told The Sun.

“Yes, maybe people will say the new manager was upset I left and went to the Olympics, that I didn’t have a pre-season with the team. He probably thinks I don’t care about the team, things like that.

“But I don’t want to use those excuses. I have to keep training hard and make sure I change the manager’s mind. If not, then we’ll see what happens in January.

“But, no, I would never swap my Olympic medal for a place back in the Chelsea team. One thing you have to do in life as a man is that when you make a decision, or a sacrifice, you have to deal with it.

“I have not one single regret in going to the Olympics. And I will not trade my medal for anything.”

Koeman Still Hoping On Netherlands Job

Featured Image

Dutchman, Ronald Koeman, who is currently in charge of Everton is still hoping to manage the Oranje of Netherlands sometime in his career.

The former Southampton manager was earmarked to replace LVG at the helm of the squad, only for Guus Hiddink to be appointed by the Dutch Football Association. Hiddink was later replaced by Danny Blind.

Koeman left Southampton to take charge of Everton ahead of the 2016-17 campaign, signing a three-year deal at Goodison Park, but he still has designs on the top job in his homeland.

“Coaching Netherlands remains one of my ambitions,” Koeman told Fox Sports.

“But I think every coach would like that. If I get the chance to coach Netherlands, I would like to take that chance.

“I was keen to take the job in 2014 after my time with Feyenoord and I felt the time was right. They went for Hiddink instead and will have had their reasons for it. Time has shown that was not the best choice.

“But I do not hold a grudge against anyone over it. I would not turn down the job because of what happened in 2014. This is all in the past now.

“Becoming Netherlands coach could be a nice end to my career.”

According to the statement from his Management, the Double wahala singer was at Quilox on Friday trying to ease off stress with his friends at the VIP corner of the club when he noticed a senior colleague and a brother, Sound Sultan and Rock Steady were been bounced from entering the VIP section of the club.

Oritse Femi who was unhappy with the behavior of the bouncers stood up to ask the why the bouncer was putting up such attitude to an A-list artiste and a brother, and the bouncer replied that an order was placed down by Quilox CEO Shina Peller that no A-list artiste should be allowed into the VIP section, claiming that they were not his costumers and they have no value at his club (presumably because of his rift with Davido).

The bouncer went further to tell Oritse Femi to keep to his section or go join his colleague at the regular section, according to his management, Oritse Femi accepted the offer to join his colleagues at the regular section but was pushed back by the bouncer, before he could say jack the other bouncer was already rough-handling him.

Oritse Femi who was holding a glass of wine had to defend himself by slapping the bouncer with the wine glass which gave the bouncer a scar on the face.

Without waiting for any explanation, the other club bouncers attacked Oriste Femi and in the process, N 8.5million worth of jewelry was stolen from Oritse Femi. The scuffle led to a protest from the crowd against the bouncers but by then the artiste was already injured. Even with the injury he was held down by the bouncers and club management claiming they were waiting for the arrival of Police.

Giroud Intends To Take His Spot In Arsenal’s XI From Sanchez

Featured Image

France international, Olivier Giroud has vowed to take back his starting spot from Alexis Sanchez at Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger has preferred Sanchez up front in place of the France international, who has not started a game this season.

Giroud sees no reason for concern just yet, though, and has made it clear he will do everything within his power to win over Wenger again.

“I do not have any doubts about my future at Arsenal,” the 30-year-old told Telefoot.

“There is always competition for places. There are a lot of attackers at every big club.

“At the moment, the coach prefers Sanchez up front, also because I have been injured. I just hope to get playing time again now. Alexis and I are different types of attackers and the coach has to make a decision.

“But I intend to come back even stronger.”

Diamond Bank Employee In Court Over $1M Fraud

Featured Image

An employee of Diamond Bank Plc, Mr Babatunde Faro, has been arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 4-count charge of money laundering, false declaration of assets and fraud to the tune of $1million.

The accused was brought before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja on Friday alongside another suspect, one Mr Sada Amadu.

The EFCC accused Mr Adamu of making cash payment of the said sum being an amount exceeding the stipulated N5 million threshold payable cash by an individual according to law, to Faro.

The offence, the anti-graft explained, was a breach of Section 1(a) of the Money Laundering Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under Section 15(2)(b) of the same Act.

One of the counts reads: “That you, Sada Adamu, on or about the 2nd day of March 2015 in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court made a cash payment of One Million US Dollars being an amount exceeding Five Million Naira to Babatunde Faro without going through a financial institution and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(a) of the Money Laundering Act 2011 as amended and punishable under Section 15(2)(b) of the same Act”.

But the accused persons pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them.

In view of their plea, counsel to EFCC, S. A. Ugwuebulam, asked the court for a date to commence trial.

However, W. Y. Maman and W. T. Iorshe representing Mr Adamu and Mr Faro respectively prayed the court to grant the accused persons bail pending trial. Opposing the motion, Ugwuebulam stated that, “the offences border on money laundering and other financial transactions without licenses. I urge the court to discountenance the motion for bail and order speedy trial of the case”.

Justice Dimgba, thereafter, adjourned to November 14, 2016 for ruling on the bail application and ordered the accused persons to be remanded in Kuje prison.

Bale Confident Wales Can Still Make It To World Cup

Featured Image

Gareth Bale has not given up hope of Wales qualifying for the World Cup in 2018, after they recorded a 1-1 draw against Serbia at home.

Coleman’s men were not up to par throughout the encounter, but Bale’s strike in the first half seemed to be enough to hand them all three points. However, Mitrovic headed in the equaliser with just five minutes left, setting them back by four points from leaders Republic of Ireland.

Bale, though, still believes his side can progress to the finals from this difficult position having reached the last four at Euro 2016.

“We are so disappointed at the moment, we played great in the first half but then we faded,” he told Sky Sports. “We dug in. It’s one of those things, you go so close at one end [as Bale hit the post] and then they go up and score.

“We believe we can still do it, we just need to keep working hard. At home we were confident, we were 1-0 up in the 85th minute, it’s two points lost.”

O’Neill: Ireland Still A Long Way From The World Cup

Featured Image

The Republic of Ireland are top of their World Cup qualifying group after four matches, but coach Martin O’Neill believes there’s still a long way to go before the World Cup.

Ireland drew their first game against Serbia, but have gone on to record wins against Georgia, Moldova and most recently Austria to top Group D.

And despite their 1-0 win over Austria, O’Neill believes beaten opponents Austria are still in the mix to reach the tournament – along with Serbia and Wales.

“Austria naturally will be disappointed because they’ve dropped all three points here,” O’Neill said after the match.

“They drew at home here with Wales, and got beaten by Serbia. But something tells me they still have a chance.

“We’ve always believed this group will be tight and I think that teams will still take points off each other.

“I’m genuinely pleased we won the game, really pleased to have 10 points from four matches, but [qualification] is still a million miles away.”

Ireland host Wales in their next qualifying game in March, with Chris Coleman’s visitors four points off the pace as it stands.
