Iwobi Apologises For UCL Own Goal Against PSG

Featured Image

Alex Iwobi played the role of a villain in the 2-2 draw against PSG, and he has apologised for his part in the draw.

With 13 minutes left on the clock, the Nigeria international sent the ball past his own goalie with a header.

The result could well cost the Gunners top spot in Group A, leaving them likely to face a difficult opponent in the round of 16.

“I heard a shout from David Ospina, but I reacted a bit late,” Iwobi told Sky Sports .

“I wanted to clear it but was in two minds and ended up doing the worst thing possible. It is my mistake and I apologise. I hold my hands up. But I have to move on and be better next game.

“I always say I give 100 per cent and what happens, happens. If you play well you play well, if you play badly you play badly. But I can always say I gave my all.

“Fortunately I have had a lot of luck and most of it has gone well.”

Arsenal’s poor run of form in November has seen them drop to fourth spot in the Premier League table, three points behind leaders Chelsea, but Iwobi remains hopeful over his side’s chances.

“When I look at the points it is so tight,” he added.

“It is anyone’s this season. Every team has got that same goal.

“I cannot call it, but I would love to see it be Arsenal.”

Griezmann Won’t Leave If Simeone Does, Despite Staying For Him

Featured Image

Antoine Griezmann has stated he has no reason to leave Atletico Madrid and believes he can improve at the club.

The Frenchman’s exploit last season, saw him claim 22 goals in 38 matches and he scored 13 goals as rojiblancos made it to the UCL final.

He was linked with a move to PSG and Manchester United and was close to leaving, due to rumours linking Diego Simeone with an exit.

However, the head coach quickly assured Griezmann he would stay put, convincing the 25-year-old to remain at Atletico as well.

“I had some doubts [about my future at Atletico Madrid] last summer when there were reports Simeone could leave,” Griezmann told GQ.

A move to Ligue 1 is not my goal at this stage,” he stressed.

“Maybe later. But I love Spain.”

Chelsea Manager Antonio Conte Wary Of Tottenham Hotspur Threat

Featured Image

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has talked up the possibility of Tottenham Hotspur launching another title challenge this season.

Chelsea currently lead the way in the Premier League thanks to a run of six wins in a row, but they will come up against the only remaining unbeaten side in the division when they host Spurs at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Conte is wary of the threat posed by Spurs and insisted that his side will need to be on top form if they are to overcome Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

“Tomorrow will be very tough against a strong opponent,” he told reporters.

“Tottenham has a great manager, talented players, very young, and I think they are improving. We have to pay great attention to them.

“Tottenham can create great difficulty for any team in this league, and can fight until the end to win the title.”

Chelsea ended Tottenham’s hopes of winning the Premier League title in the corresponding fixture last season.

Vincent Kompany Officially Sidelined For Six Weeks Due To Injury

Featured Image

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that captain Vincent Kompany will be sidelined for up to six weeks with a knee injury.

Kompany lasted just 35 minutes on his latest return from injury against Crystal Palace last weekend before being forced off with blurred vision having collided with goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

However, Guardiola revealed earlier this week that the Belgian had sustained a separate knee injury too, and the Spaniard has now confirmed that it will keep his captain out for at least a month.

The 30-year-old has been limited to just 115 minutes of Premier League action so far this season having once again been dogged by injuries.

Kompany’s latest absence could see him miss the entire festive period, including games against the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.

It leaves City with just two out-and-out center backs — John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi — for a busy next month, although Guardiola suggested he would not be dipping into the transfer market in January as he has possible central-defensive cover in Fernandinho and Bacary Sagna.

One player who won’t be featuring at center back is Yaya Toure, who played in that position for Barcelona under Guardiola in the 2009 Champions League final against Manchester United. Barcelona won 2-0.

Toure is back in favor at City after missing the first three months of the season because Guardiola was unhappy with comments by the midfielder’s agent. Guardiola said Toure will continue to play in a “more offensive” position.

City visits Burnley in the league on Saturday.

Tony Bellew To Fight David Haye At Heavyweight Come March 4

Featured Image

London’s O2 Arena will host an all-britain non-title heavyweight fight between Tony Bellew and David Haye on March 4.

33-year-old Bellew, who holds the WBC cruiserweight belt taunted the veteran boxer after retaining his title in the match against BJ Flores.

As their fight was announced, Bellew said: “I cop him with my best punch, he’s going to sleep.”

Haye said: “He is completely delusional if he thinks he can beat me.”

The Londoner returned to the ring in January after a three-and-a-half year absence with a knockout win over Mark de Mori, and beat Arnold Gjergjaj in May.

“He hasn’t been in a hard fight for over five years,” said Bellew. “I know that he does not want it as much as me and he is not going to be as brave as me.”

Bellew also took time out of the ring to play a supporting role in Rocky spinoff Creed, before returning in May.

“He still thinks he’s on the set of Creed and there will be some kind of Rocky-style happy ending,” said Haye, who was previously a unified cruiserweight world champion.

“I’ve earned my credentials the hard way – inside the ring, not on film sets. There will be no second takes, no stuntmen taking the blows and no flashing lights on the red carpet. The only lights Bellew will see are those of the spotlights shining down on him when he wakes up from his nap on the canvas.”

Former British light-heavyweight champion Bellew jumped to cruiserweight after failing to win a world title at his first two attempts.

‘The Bomber’, known for his punching power, is aware of the risk he is taking by stepping up further.

“I know what I am up against,” said Bellew. He cops me with his best punch, more than likely I am going to sleep.

“If it comes down to a question of heart and determination, I win hands down. If it comes down to one punch, it’s a 50-50.”

Antonio Conte Confirms Mikel Obi And John Terry Have Muscular Injuries

Featured Image

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has confirmed that John Terry will miss his side’s London derby against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday due to a muscular injury.

Terry has been forced to settle for a place on the bench in recent weeks, making just one substitute appearance in the Premier League since picking up an ankle injury in September.

In the 35-year-old’s absence Chelsea have embarked on a six-match winning streak without conceding a single goal, and Terry will now be sidelined for at least two more weeks.

“For tomorrow I don’t have available John Terry and (John) Obi Mikel,” Conte told reporters.

“John has a muscular problem and Obi is recovering from a muscular problem. I’m not sure if [Terry’s] injury was in the Under-23 game or the day after.”

Saturday’s match will see the league leaders take on the only remaining unbeaten side in the division.

Chelsea Legend Gianfranco Zola Backs His Former Club To Win The Premier League

Featured Image

Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola has backed his former club to win the Premier League title this season.

Chelsea have risen to the top of the table courtesy of a six-match winning streak during which time they have not conceded, scoring 17 times without reply.

Zola praised manager Antonio Conte for the impact he has had at Stamford Bridge already, and believes that the title race could end up being between the current top three of Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.

“They are doing very well, are on a good streak and look solid, so it is a positive moment for the club. When the results are on your side, the atmosphere is very easy to be good, but I think the important thing is all of the work which they have put in place. Everything happening is the result of some very good hard work, everything is coming together. Antonio has done exceptionally well. He is creating an atmosphere and a good basis to keep this form for a long time,” Zola told PA Sport.

“I am pleased because they play well and are winning games deservedly. I had no doubts about the value of Antonio because I know his qualities. My only question was whether the players would buy his philosophy straight away because he can be a very intense and hard-working coach. It seems to me that they are fine with that, which is why the results are coming in so quickly. It is not by co-incidence either, it is the result of (doing) a very good job.

“It is going to be tight – but if you remember a few weeks ago, everyone was saying Manchester City had already won the league, then Tottenham beat them and also Arsenal beat Chelsea. With what the league is like now, it is very uncertain and there are five or even six teams who could win it and the team of the moment will be changed.

“It seems to me, though, that three teams look like they have the consistency that might be necessary to win the league – this could be Chelsea, could be Liverpool or Manchester City. It looks like (Chelsea) are more reliable now for a longer run, but we will see because you also have Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United too who can all come back.”

Mikel Considering Option To Leave Chelsea In January

Featured Image

If Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte continues to ignore John Obi Mikel, the Nigeria international will look for a new club in January.

The Nigerian midfielder is the second longest-running player at the club, behind John Terry and has not played a single minute under Antonio Conte. He has also hinted at his choice to go to Olympics led to a falling out with the Italian.

Without Mikel, Conte has guided Chelsea to top of the Premier League table with the club currently enjoying a six-game winning streak without conceding a goal, but the 29-year-old has no regrets over his summer decision.

“I have never been a guy to make excuses, I never shy away from my responsibilities,” Mikel told BBC World Service Sport.

“Yes, people will say ‘he went to the Olympics’ and ‘he didn’t have a pre-season with the team’ and a new manager came in and was probably upset I went to the Olympics and thinks I don’t care about the team.

“I don’t want to make excuses. In the end of the day, I have to keep training hard and trying to change the manager’s mind. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen.

“I will keep doing my best and ready for when called up upon. We will see what happens in January.”

Mikel stands by his contribution, he joined Chelsea 10 years ago, having won the Premier League twice and both the Champions League and Europa League once during his spell and is confident his achievement will be remembered.

He continued: “I have been a part of the best years of this club. Chelsea never won the Champions League before, I was there and I was the man of the match in the final.

“I have written my name in the history of this football club and I have won loads of trophies. I have played close to 400 games and have no single regret. I have done it all.

“I still want to win more and help the team. Players move on in life but I am relaxed about January. I will speak to the club find the best solution.

“I could say a lot of things which could put me in trouble, but I would rather be quiet.”

Cuadrado Wants Juventus To Regain Focus

Featured Image

Juan Cuadrado has urged Juventus to regain focus as they prepare for the weekend clash against Genoa.

The Old Lady beat Sevilla 3-1 away to reach the last 16 of the Champions League and hold a comfortable seven-point lead over second placed Roma in the Serie A.

Nevertheless, Cuadrado is adamant Massimiliano Allegri’s team still have a long way to go this campaign.

“We must above all be calm and keep our heads on Sunday. We must not take anything granted and make sure we approach the game with controlled aggression and determination,” Cuadrado told Mediaset.

“We picked up a brilliant result against Sevilla on Tuesday and we ticked off our first big objective of the season in reaching the competition’s knockout round.

“But there is a lot of football still to be played and all we can do is take one step at a time, focusing only on winning each game as it comes and seeing what kind of position that puts us in towards the end of the campaign.

“Our daily goal is to work hard on the training ground and improve wherever we can; we are a top team and that means running the hard yards in every single session.”

Arsene Wenger Happy With Granit Xhaka’s Progress

Featured Image

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that he is “very happy” with how Granit Xhaka is adapting to life at the club.

Xhaka joined the Gunners in a big-money move from Borussia Monchengladbach during the summer but has so far started just five Premier League games for the club.

Wenger has often rotated his midfield pairing, with the likes of Santi Cazorla, Francis Coquelin, Mohamed Elneny and Aaron Ramsey also competing for a place, but the Frenchman insists that he is pleased with what he has seen from Xhaka so far.

“I’m very happy with his commitment,” he told reporters.
.
“I think he’s developing well. He hasn’t maybe started enough since the start of the season but he is adapting to a different league, a different way of playing.

“Overall I’m happy because every day he’s focused on working hard and I’m confident he’ll get his number of games.”

Xhaka has been left out of the starting lineup for Arsenal’s last two games in all competitions, against Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.

In the directive, the Nigerian government cautioned the MDAs not to reject corps members posted to them by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Arsene Wenger : Jack Wilshere Will Be Offered A New Contract

Featured Image

Jack Wilshere will be offered a new Arsenal contract despite spending this season on loan at Bournemouth

Wenger sanctioned Wilshere’s season-long loan to Bournemouth back in August but made it clear at the time he wanted the player to end up at Arsenal for life.

Wilshere has since featured in every Premier League game, a run that will end this Sunday as loan rules mean he is ineligible to face his parent club at the Emirates.

Asked whether a new contract is on the table for Wilshere, the Gunners boss said: “Of course. Ideally [it will be addressed before next summer]. We have to plan around the new year.

“I ask every week how did he play but I haven’t spoken to him. I leave him to talk to his manager. When I can watch him, I do watch him.

“I am happy that he is developing well. It was a good decision for him to go to get regular football.

“He is getting stronger every week and that is exactly what he needed. When a player like Jack is in top form, you miss him.”

Bob Bradley : Fernando Llorente Has Swansea Future

Featured Image

Summer signing Fernando Llorente has been told he is still wanted by Swansea, despite being left out of the squad to face Everton last weekend.

“Fernando has a future here, he is a good man,” said Swans boss Bob Bradley today.

“I had a very good conversation with Fernando when I told him he would not be in the squad for the Everton game.

“Before he arrived he’d had a stretch of injuries. He got here, he’s had some little knocks and I just told him. I’ve watched him plenty.

“I felt we’d made strides with him physically but he still wasn’t where he needed to be.

“I felt his response to all that was playing with a little less mobility, and I think Fernando’s best games in the past have not been about him being a target man.

“I felt that specifically against Stoke and Man Utd. I felt as a team, we didn’t do a good job of how we used Fernando – and I don’t think Fernando did a good enough job of moving in those games, of challenging defenders with his movement.

There’s still a higher level to come from him.”

Bradley also addressed the comments of Llorente’s brother, admitting he is not happy to see agents weighing in to club matters but believes his words had been “twisted”

“It does annoy me when agents speak out about players, but without having been there, I can’t really tell you (what was said),” said Bradley.

“I do have one-on-ones with the players where I say to them the door is always open and it’s important your agent can give me a call.

“But, it’s a player’s responsibility to control the agent. An agent is still working for the player. I’ve told many players over the years that’s their responsibility.

“It’s already gone on between Pep Guardiola and Yaya Toure’s agent. Look, it’s an easy thing to be strong in this situation but, in this case, I thought it got twisted.”

Antonio Conte Responds To Reports Linking Victor Moses To Barcelona

Featured Image

Antonio Conte refused to be drawn on talk of a new deal for Victor Moses’ during his press conference a few minutes ago. The Nigeria international has reportedly been scouted by Barcelona.

Moses, 25, has been in sensational form since being deployed on the right side of a 3-4-3 formation and has shown incredible stamina to get up and down the park.

His good form has seen him be linked to one of the best clubs in the world, who are in need of a right-back.

But Conte hopes Moses is just focused on his own game at Chelsea.

‘It’s important to be focused on the present,’ he said.

‘I’d like to think my players are looking at the present.’

Journalist: Victor Moses has been scouted by Barcelona having played well for Chelsea this season – they are actively looking for a right back. Would you like to see the club tie him down to a new, longer-term contract?

Conte: It’s important to be focused on the present. To be focused game by game. We are dong well, but need to go game by game. I like to think about what is important now.

Journalist: But the contract might be important to Victor now?

Conte: There is a time to think about this but it is not now.

Did Obasanjo Just Throw Buhari Under The Bus?

Featured Image

Did Obasanjo Just Throw Buhari Under The Bus? By Sabella Ogbobode Abidde

One of the books President Buhari must have read, or should read, is Sun Tzu’s The Art of War. But of course, there are others. Why should he? Well, let’s defer this part of the discussion until another time.

Here and now, however, let’s briefly talk about Obasanjo’s character and his unstated intention towards Buhari. At the very least, it seems to me that General Obasanjo is disappointed, and getting inpatient with Buhari and his administration.

This piece was written by Sabella Ogbobode Abidde. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

In the eighteen or so months since President Muhammadu Buhari has been in office, no former president has visited Aso Rock as much as General Olusegun Obasanjo. He just couldn’t stay away. He wouldn’t stay away! And he made sure that the media knew, well ahead of time, of his goings and comings. Hence, the many still and moving pictures of him smiling and smirking — and a body language that say “I am the man: the kingmaker without whom nothing happens.”

Since 1970, at least, Obasanjo has been in the position (most of the time) to make things happen or keep them from happening. He gives, he takes; he creates, he destroys. And has gotten away wielding such power all these years.

READ ALSO: Reps Brands Obasanjo Most Corrupt Nigerian In History

In many of those pictures – especially those taken after March 2016 — you could see how uncomfortable Buhari looks. Many watchers of Obasanjo wonders about what he left behind in the Villa that necessitates his many visits. And of course, they also wonder why Buhari was always obliging him. You don’t see any of his predecessors parading left-right-left-right-left-right that many times in and out of the Villa. And you don’t see Jonathan doing same.

Not too long ago, I made a comment on my Facebook page, advising that Buhari should be wary of Obasanjo. But of course, Buhari need not listen to me. All he need do is recollect what Obasanjo did to President Jonathan. The criticism of Jonathan was not what bothered me (after all, I too criticized Jonathan and his administration two dozen times too many). It was the taunts. The abuses. The ridiculing. The undermining. The political uppercuts to the chins and jaws, and the knees to the groins that sickened me.

Other than pledging his livers and kidneys and heart, there was nothing Jonathan didn’t do to make and keep Obasanjo happy. Jonathan did this and that and that and this for Obasanjo, still, Obasanjo was not happy. Jonathan was on his knees, licking and kissing Obasanjo’s hands and feet; still, Obasanjo was not going to let Jonathan be. In the end, Jonathan was left naked on the altar. This was the lesson I thought Buhari would remember, and prevent a repeat. But apparently not!

As we approach the tail-end of November 2016, General Obasanjo is at it again. Only this time, his verbal arrows and political-daggers are pointed at President Buhari. Media houses across the country are screaming “Obasanjo attacks Buhari…” “Obasanjo goes after Buhari…” etc., etc. While Obasanjo may be correct in his assessment of Buhari and his administration, there was nothing he said during the speech he delivered at the First Akintola Williams Annual Lecture in Lagos, that he couldn’t have delivered in private.

There are times when one must be discreet. But strangely, he found it necessary to add to the president’s headache by lambasting him in a public forum. Obasanjo’s behavior is about power. It is about control. It is about hubris. Superciliousness, even. And it says a lot about the manner of man he is.

History will show that Obasanjo was responsible for, or worsened many of our collective problems. And from the day he truncated Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s presidential ambition in 1979, Nigeria has been on the path to damnation. And then he forced Yar’Adua on the country, and in the process helping to make a Jonathan presidency a reality. And while he was in office (1999-2007), he acted as if he knew it all. He didn’t give a shit about anyone or institution, but himself. It was all about Obasanjo.

But more than anything else, corruption, incompetence, waste and excesses became a part of our national/political culture. Obasanjo, along with General Ibrahim Babangida, were the grand patrons and granddaddies of all that went wrong with Nigeria. But today, he goes around pontificating and sermonizing. Ironically, the gullible are lapping up every word spoken by The King of Wrongs.

If President Buhari doesn’t know it, he should know it now: this is about 2019, about the next presidential election. The former president may have decided that the current president must go. And what better way to start the recall and or removal process. Now that Obasanjo has fired the first canon, others will join the bandwagon – unless of course there is great improvements in many of the promises that he (Buhari) made during the campaign season.

Whether he survives the Obasanjo onslaught or not, he (Buhari) must remember this: Obasanjo will not hesitate to throw him under a moving bus or moving train — or a moving ocean liner for that matter.  The thing with Obasanjo, especially when it comes to power, is that if you ignore him, he will make your life a living hell; if you embrace him, you’d suffer the same fate. So, the question many had had to content with (since the advent of the Fourth Republic) is this: what to do about Olusegun Mathew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo.

How do you please him? The simple answer is that you can’t. Really, you can’t! OBJ is OBJ and OBJ doesn’t think much of his predecessors and successors. His arrogance is legendary. That he was going to mess with President Buhari was just a matter of time. And then there is Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Tinubu!

The Man from Daura must be smarter than these and six other men if the next presidential election is part of his future ambition. But more than anything else: he must curtail his incessant overseas travels to concentrate on our many national problems and challenges. If he doesn’t, well, Daura is not a bad place to retire to.

West Ham Manager Slaven Bilic Not Bothered About Sack Talks

Featured Image

West Ham are just a point above the relegation zone, but manager Slaven Bilic has played down speculation about his future.

Bilic is under mounting pressure with West Ham lying 17th in the Premier League table.

The Croatian has the full support of joint-chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold.

But that will be put to the test with a tough run of games against Manchester United on Sunday followed by Arsenal and Liverpool.

West Ham manager Bilic says he feels supported and said: “There is not much to say I am doing my job, I speak to the owners, mostly Mr Sullivan regularly after every game, and in between if something needs talking about.

“I feel supported as I told you so many times I concentrate on my job and our next game, that’s basically it.

“I’m not fearful, I feel pressure of course because we are not producing, we’re not delivering and don’t have enough points to feel happy and feel safe.

“I see the improvement. I take my job in good times and bad times. (Support) is important but not crucial.

“I have said so many times how I look at my job or any managers job – the next few games can change everything from good times to bad times and bad times to good.

“When we were doing well I wasn’t thinking about getting a new contract. All I concentrate on is how to improve the team, to lift them after a defeat or improve after a good run. That’s how I look at my job.”

Some West Ham supporters have called for Bilic’s head in the wake of last weekend’s last-gasp 3-2 defeat at London rivals Tottenham.

Bilic says his side are heading in the right direction and added: “Against Spurs I see a team hungry and alive, the points were there for us in a difficult away game so that’s what I’m confident about.

“It’s still very tight. Win at Spurs and we’d have been about 12th. We can say it’s still early days but we have to start picking up the points. We can say we deserved more or were unlucky but the table doesn’t lie.”
