Solidarity Like No Other: Nacional Want Chapecoense To Be Named Copa Sudamericana Champions

Featured Image

An heartwarming gesture from Atletico Nacional, as they ask CONMEBOL to name Chapecoense winners of the Copa Sudamericana following the tragic crash that claimed the lives of most of the team and staff.

Tributes Roll In From The Football Community For Chapecoense

The Brazilian club were travelling to Medellin to face their Colombian counterpart in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final, the equivalent of the Europa League, when their plane crashed in Cerro Gordo in the municipality of La Union.

6 Survivors Reported As Plane Carrying Brazilian Football Team Crashes In Colombia

At least 75 lives were lost in the tragic incident, with six individuals, including players Alan Ruschel, Jackson Follmann and Neto among the survivors.

CONMEBOL has suspended “all activities” in the wake of the news and Nacional have called on the governing body to hand Chapecoense – who played fourth-tier football as recently as 2009 – a first major title.

“The pain overwhelms our hearts and invades our thinking in mourning,” a club statement reads. “These have been unfortunate hours in which we have been dismayed by news that we never wanted to hear.

“The accident of our football brothers of Chapecoense will mark us for life and will leave an indelible mark on Latin American and world football. All this has been completely unexpected, that’s why the pain [is so great].

“They were all – footballers, technical staff, journalists and crew – people with many dreams, and that’s why we cry.

“The worldwide lament has also been extended to the entire Verdolaga family, who from their sponsors, their board of directors, their technical staff, their players, their administrators and their fanbase, have manifested the sadness and dismay for the absurd [tragedy].

“Solidarity did not wait and on our part, we join the suffering of all the brothers who left us and who, along with their families and ourselves, shared a great dream of being continental champions of the Copa Sudamericana.

“After being very worried about the human side, we also thought about the competitive aspect and we want to publish this statement in which Atletico Nacional invites CONMEBOL to award the title of the Copa Sudamericana to the Association Chapecoense de Futebol in honour of their great loss and in posthumous homage to the victims of the fatal accident that our sport now mourns.

“For our part, and forever, Chapecoense: Champions of the 2016 Copa Sudamericana.”

A number of Nacional players have echoed the club’s stance.

“The shock, the pain and the astonishment are very great,” striker Ezequiel Rescaldani told TyC Sports.

“We were told that this is in the hands of CONMEBOL because you never know how it will end, but the idea of Nacional is to give the championship to Chapecoense, which I think is a good decision and we all agree with.”

“[Our manager Reinaldo Rueda] said that we should take this as a warning from God to make the most of our life,” Gilberto Garcia added.

“We will wait for the decision to be taken by CONMEBOL, but we want to declare Chapecoense the champions and then look to what is coming.”

The Grandfather Of Corruption And His Grandchildren

The Grandfather Of Corruption And His Grandchildren By Ahmed Oluwasanjo

Shortly before the 2015 general elections, former Nigerian president, Olusegun Obasanjo (OBJ) declared the beginning of a letter-writing season with an explosive letter he addressed to President Goodluck Jonathan, his one-time political son.

This piece was written by Ahmed Oluwasanjo. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

Obasanjo’s letter went viral and became the crux of public discourse, drawing serious rejoinders in the run up to 2015 general elections.

The most remarkable rejoinder came from Iyabo Obasanjo, OBJ’s beloved daughter, who appeared to have dipped her pen in gall. Jonathan also responded; but Obasanjo’s letter contributed a great deal to wrecking his re-election bid.

READ ALSO: Reps Brands Obasanjo Most Corrupt Nigerian In History

And that season passed.

We are now in another season – the season of confessions: one in which past and present kleptomaniacs who are responsible for the political and economic woes of Nigeria publicly trade abuses.

Last week, at a lecture to mark the first Akintola Williams Annual Lecture in Lagos, Obasanjo disagreed with the plan of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to obtain a foreign loan and also urged the president to stop blaming his predecessors. In addition, he repeated his allegation against the lawmakers, calling them unarmed robbers.

Looking back at how Obasanjo squandered the opportunity to put Nigeria on the right part as two-term president, one feels obliged to ask, is Obasanjo morally worthy to advice the present government or call lawmakers thieves?

From the $182 million Halliburton scandal to the $16 billion he allegedly spent on power, his desperation for a third term to his failure to fix major roads, Obasanjo contributed immensely to the woes of Nigeria.

However, the aphorism about accepting a message and overlooking the messenger behooves us to look at the merit of what Obasanjo said.

What has Obasanjo said about the Buhari-led government that is different from what many Nigerians are saying – that they’re hurting from the recession? What has he said that is different and more caustic than what Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the emir of Kano, once warned the Buhari-led government about?

What has Obasanjo said that reputable media platforms and veteran Nigerian columnists have not written about?

If what Obasanjo said is sensationally interpreted as throwing Buhari under the train or an attempt to sully him, then Buhari has done far worse to himself through his flip-flops on the economy and the government’s lack of direction.

Let’s call a spade by its name. Buhari’s government is becoming a joke and a disappointment by the day. That Aisha Buhari, the First Lady, whose activities ought to be restricted to the “kitchen, living room and the other room” crawled out to publicly criticise him is a testimony to this.

Moreover, if Aisha, the president’s for-better-for-worst partner, could sneak out of “the other room” to publicly criticise him, why should we split hairs about Obasanjo’s comment?

Obasanjo called our lawmakers “thieves,” and so what? If they are not what Obasanjo called them, then they should let Nigerians know what they earn as salaries and allowances monthly. Or can our lawmakers justify the constituency development fund put at N900 billion between 2004 and 2014, according to Muhammed Ndume, onetime chairman, Senate Committee on Millennium Development Goals?

It is not enough for the House of Representative’s Spokesperson, Abulrazak Namdas, to call Obasanjo the “grandfather of corruption,” however fitting the title may appear. It is more important that lawmakers prove beyond reasonable doubt that they are not worse than their grandfather – Obasanjo.

If Abdulmumin Jibrin’s allegation on budget padding is swept under the carpet, it would be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for Nigerians to believe that lawmakers are not what Obasanjo called them.

The war of words between Obasanjo, and his grandchildren has once again, revealed that some persons are above the law in Nigeria. Otherwise, both Obasanjo and some of his grandchildren, especially those alleged to have padded the 2016 budget, should be behind bars for their atrocities against Nigeria and Nigerians.

Ronaldo To Miss Wednesday Clash Due To El Clasico, Zidane Confirms

Featured Image

Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane has confirmed forward Cristiano Ronaldo will not feature in the midweek clash against Cultural to ensure he is fresh for the weekend fixture against Barcelona.

Los Blancos have a shot at opening up a nine-point lead against their bitter rivals Barcelona when they face this weekend.

The first leg against Cultural saw Madrid record a 7-1 win without the Portuguese and Zidane has confirmed he won’t be available for the return leg at the Bernabeu.

“Wednesday’s game is a chance for Ronaldo to have some rest,” Zidane said at a press conference.

Nevertheless, the Madrid coach was adamant that they will not take the match lightly, before confirming that Casemiro will make his comeback after a two-month lay-off due to a fractured leg.

“It is true that 7-1 is a very good result for us, but we must respect the opponent, and the fans who come to support us,” he added.

“I hold Cultural in high esteem. They are a good team that can cause us problems.

“Casemiro will get minutes. It will be his first game back, so we will have to see and see how he feels for Saturday’s match. But he is ready to play.”

FRSC To Increase Fees For Driver’s Licence, Number Plate

Featured Image

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Monday said it is considering to increase the cost of procuring the driver’s licence and vehicle plate number as the current cost was no longer sustainable.

The Corps Marshall, FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi, raised the alarm at the 136th meeting of the Joint Tax Board, JTB, held in Abuja.

The Corps Marshall said the commission is considering the idea of increasing the cost of procuring the driver’s licence and vehicle plate number, stressing that the current rate of N6,000 and N12,000 for both items respectively, was no longer sustainable judging from the hike in operational cost.

READ ALSO: Nigerians To Start Paying VAT On International Passports – FIRS

He also cried out to the Joint Tax Board (JTB) to facilitate the payment of over N700 million owed it by various states in the country.

“FRSC is owed N700 million. I’ve written to the JTB. We need this money badly because it’s hurting our operations. Some states have credit balance of millions. We offer credit facilities but paying for service rendered is now very key. I hope the JTB intervenes”, he said.

On the plate number and driver’s licence, Oyeyemi said:

“N6,000 to get a driver’s licence and N12,000 for vehicle plate number is too poor. We are spending so much to produce them. I’m running over 200 in stations across the country. I shouldn’t be providing that. The states should.

“When I came in last year, the popular Mikano generator was N1.5 million, now it’s N3.8 million. Only Kwara State provided a generator. Majority of the states defaulted in providing that. All states should have secured offices. They should own these stations and I want to relocate workstations there. I want to stamp out corruption. Enough is enough.

“So, for us, our running costs is too high and the states should help us. We can be collecting N1,000 on every plate number and N500 on every licence as commission. That will help us a great deal”.

Enrique: Iniesta Could Play El Clasico

Featured Image

Some good news for Barcelona who are in dire need of it, as Luis Enrique has confirmed that Andres Iniesta could play the El Clasico against Madrid on Saturday.

The Blaugrana captain suffered a knee injury in the 3-2 win over Valencia and left the field in tears after a heavy tackle by Enzo Perez.

Iniesta was slated to spend between six and eight weeks on the sidelines, but an earlier return is looking like the case.

And Luis Enrique is confident he can be involved on Saturday, as Barca seek to avoid falling nine points behind their bitter rivals at the top of the table.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Wednesday’s Copa del Rey clash with Hercules, the coach said: “Andres is waiting for medical clearance but it’s more of a formality really.

“He is training with us and looks in great condition. He won’t be playing Wednesday because he is suspended, but we are just waiting on confirmation [for El Clasico]. But in theory he is selectable.”

The Nigerian government on Monday disclosed that negotiations are ongoing to ensure the release of more Chibok girls and other persons held hostage by Boko Haram terrorists.

This assertion was made by the Senior Special Assistant to the president on Media and Publicity, Dr Femi Adesina in Lagos.

The SSA also added that those so far released from terrorists’ den by the military, were being rehabilitated “physically, psychologically and in all aspects.

“Their education is being taken care of as well. Talks are ongoing on the release of the remaining girls. Many more would be released,” he assured.

Senate Approves Buhari’s Request For Fund Transfer In 2016 Budget

Featured Image

The Senate on Tuesday approved President Muhammadu Buhari’s request for virement of funds (fund transfer) in the 2016 budget.

In October, the president had written to the senate asking for a transfer (virement) of funds appropriated for special intervention in the 2016 budget to other exigent items.

“I write to request for the virement of funds appropriated for special intervention (recurrent) and special intervention (capital) to fund some critical recurrent and capital items,” the president wrote.

“This request has risen due to a number of reasons, including shortfalls in provisions for personnel costs, inadequate provision ab nitio for some items like the amnesty programme, continuing requirements to sustain the war against insurgency, and depreciation of the naira.

“However, considering the fact that the budgeted revenues are running behind target largely due to renewed violence in the Niger Delta, and there are no supplementary revenue sources, the most viable option for now is the virement of appropriated funds from heads and sub-heads that may not be fully utlised before the end of the year.

The president had requested for the virement of N180.8bn from the funds appropriated for Special Intervention (Capital and Recurrent).

The House of Representatives, which is concurrently working 0n the request, had raised it to N208bn, while the Senate jacked it up to N213bn.

On Tuesday, the Senate gave the approval during the plenary.

Ander Herrera Bemoans Lack Of Luck At Manchester United

Featured Image

Ander Herrera has stated that luck is against Manchester United and believe they should be notching back-to-back victories.

The Red Devils have amassed just 20 points in their opening 13 games, which is their worst run in the last 17 years. Their 1-1 draw against West Ham is their fourth consecutive home draw.

Danny Randolph, Hammers goalie produced a top drawer performance against Mourinho’s men, which has been the case for the Old Trafford outfit so far this season. And Ander Herrera believes they’ve been unlucky.

This follows Paul Pogba’s joke of how the players might start to think they’re under a curse.

“I don’t know what to say,” the Spain international said. “At the moment, luck is completely against us. We are playing very good and we deserve eight more points than we have.”

Asked if he felt United were close to getting on a winning run, the 27-year-old said: “Yes. We feel it because we are better than every opponent.

“I don’t know when the luck will change, but it’s not even luck – it’s just [what is] fair. We are looking for fair. We are looking to score maybe half of the chances we create and we will win 4-1 every game.”

“The best player of Burnley was the ‘keeper, the best player of Stoke was the ‘keeper, the best player of Arsenal was Petr Cech, the best player of West Ham was Randolph,” he said. “We are doing something good and we have to take good things from it.

“We play intense, we win the second balls, we create chances, we move the ball, we control the game, we have more possession than the opponents, we shoot on goal.

“I remember last season everyone said, ‘shoot, shoot, shoot’, and now we shoot I don’t know how many times each game but we are not scoring.

“It’s unbelievable that we don’t have six or eight points more than we have but hopefully the luck will turn in our favour.”

Walcott Admits Giroud Frustration

Featured Image

Olivier Giroud is starting to get frustrated with life on the bench, according to Arsenal teammate Theo Walcott.

This season has seen Arsene Wenger move Alexis Sanchez to a central role in the Arsenal attack, which puts the French attacker on the bench.

He has been relegated from his role as a regular starter to an impact substitute, and he has made his mark in that aspect.

He scored a brace against Sunderland, before getting a late equaliser in the clash against Manchester United. He also assisted a goal in the 3-1 win over Bournemouth.

“Olivier’s strengths are fantastic,” Walcott said.

“I know he will be frustrated with the amount of games he has not played but, if you look at his scoring record and how effective he has been when he has been on the pitch – again [on Sunday against Bournemouth], coming off the bench and grabbing an assist.

“It just shows he keeps on reminding the manager what he can do.”

Giroud has also been on target in his last two Champions League outings, against Ludogorets and Paris Saint-Germain.

He has five goals for the season, but Alexis – who scored twice against Bournemouth – has doubled that return.

Suspected Militants Abduct 7 Persons During Raid In Epe

Featured Image

About 20 gunmen suspected to be militants have abducted 7 persons during a raid on Kodjo Farm, located at Igbodu, Epe area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

Clad in military camouflage, the gunmen were said to have shot sporadically on Sunday when they invaded Kodjo Farms and whisked away five victims, including a 65-year-old man, Kakaja Joseph, a security guard.

It was gathered that the gunmen abducted two travellers during a second raid on the town that saw them blocking a road.

READ ALSO: Gunmen Storm Lagos School, Kidnap 2 Students, Officials

Apparently unsatisfied with Sunday’s attack, the gunmen were said to have stormed the area on Monday to abduct students of Molajoye Community High School on the assembly ground.

However, policemen attached to Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Area N Police Command, Navy and Army foiled the abduction.

The raid is coming less than two weeks after the gunmen abducted 13 farmers from the area, including six foreigners.

The gunmen, who were said to have arrived at the poultry at about 8am on Sunday, shooting sporadically, whisked away their victims in a waiting boat – carting away about 50 live chickens and several crates of eggs.

It was learnt that a number of persons spent the night in the bush during the raid.

A poultry worker, who craved anonymity, said “After kidnapping the poultry workers, the gunmen went to Molajoye Expressway and kidnapped two travelers. Some of the occupants of the bus sustained injuries.”

The Nation quoted the son of the guard, Isaiah Joseph, as saying that the family has been making efforts to rescue his father.

He said: “Since our father was kidnapped, we’ve been running from pillar to post to rescue him. When he left home on Saturday, we expected him back on Sunday for the church service. We waited with our mother, but he didn’t show up. We decided to go to the farm to check on him.

“We were told by one of the engineers that he had been kidnapped alongside four workers.

“We’re still waiting for him to return. But our major concern is his health. He’s old. We don’t know how they are treating him. The management has assured they would secure his release.”

However, the Lagos State Police Command has dismissed the report, saying that nobody was abducted.

The command’s spokesperson Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said:

“The command wishes to state that this publication is not only false and misleading, but a figment of imagination of the writer. “Epe axis and Lagos State is totally safe.

“There is no invasion by militants or any other criminal elements on any part of Lagos.

“The command hereby advises anyone peddling this falsehood to desist or be made answerable to the law.

“Residents of Epe and Lagos at large should disregard this falsehood and carry on their lawful activities as the command has devised operational strategies to ensure safety of lives and property during this festive season.

“Members of the public are enjoined to report any suspicious movement to the command through its emergency numbers 767 or 112.”

The news is coming barely a day after the Lagos State House of Assembly approved death sentence for kidnappers, whose victims died, while in their custody.

Coutinho Set For Six Weeks On The Sidelines With Ankle Injury

Featured Image

Liverpool will have to endure their busy Christmas schedule without Philippe Coutinho, who will be out for six weeks with ankle ligament damage.

The Brazilian was replaced in the first half of the 2-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday and underwent a scan on Monday.

The Reds are hoping their star playmaker will return to action soon enough and won’t need the full six weeks required for this type of injury.

However, it is certain he will not be available for the Merseyside derby against Everton, with the December 31st clash against Manchester City a target for his early return.

Liverpool will end November with a League Cup clash against Leeds United and will play six matches before the new year.

Coutinho has played a pivotal role for Liverpool, scoring five goals and assisting five more in 13 EPL appearances.

Liverpool have scored 32 goals so far this season, the highest tally in the league, with Klopp’s men sitting second on the log on level points with City and a point behind Chelsea.

Since taking over the Selecao from Dunga in June, he has led them to six consecutive victories on the road to Russia World Cup 2018.

And the Former Corinthians boss reveals the performances and the results have exceeded all expectations he had for his first six months in the job.

“I thought it would be more complicated, with less [positive] results,” Tite told Reuters.

“I didn’t imagine that we’d have these numbers and, even better than the numbers, such form. We have kept up a high standard of performance. That’s significant.”

With six matches to go, Brazil are just one match away from the total points needed to qualify for the world cup.

“An expression that sums it up well is turning the page,” Tite said.

“We are building a new moment for the national team. It’s a moment in which we are qualifying, consolidating the team, with a football that is efficient and pretty and that needs to be consolidated.

“We’re well on our way to qualification, there’s not far to go.”

Hazard: Chelsea’s Absence From The UCL Is An Advantage

Featured Image

Chelsea have pulled ahead in the EPL title race and attacking midfielder, Eden Hazard feels their lack of UCL football is a blessing in disguise.

A 10th place finish after a disastrous 2015-16 season put the blues out of contention for both the UCL and UEL.

Conte has stated he would love to compete in Europe, but is also relishing the increased amount of time he can spend with the team.

And Hazard is certainly seeing the positives over having the chance to prepare for domestic matches, with second-placed Liverpool another team seemingly benefiting.

“It’s good,” Hazard, who played as Chelsea made it seven straight top-flight wins by beating Tottenham, told reporters.

“We have one week to prepare for the game and at the end of the week we know what to do when we play.

“Last year, we were just doing recovery so we weren’t always ready for the game, but that’s not the case now. We are concentrating on the opposition during the week and give everything.

“We do lots of tactical work and video work, it depends who we are playing. We do everything to be prepared.”

Chelsea have a crunch away game against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in their next game on Saturday.

He said, “We did take a position and I believe it would be implemented in the very near future that before you get any services from the immigration department: renewal of passports etc, you’d have to show that you are a tax payer.

“These things are normal all over the world, In an effort to serve Nigerians and Nigeria better.

“People believe that payment of tax is a burden and I’ll repeat that you only pay tax on income and profits.

“So if you reside in Nigeria and you are benefiting from being a Nigerian resident, it is only fair that you contribute to the system that makes you enjoy that standard of living.’’

‎”Every good and service except from items that are not VATABLE has to be charged VAT.

”What I can tell you is that as we move forward, as you obtain services from government they will ask you to show evidence of tax payment”.

In Lagos: State Assembly Approves Death Sentence For Kidnappers

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday approved death sentence for kidnappers, whose victims died, while in their custody.

The ratification of the death sentence followed the adoption of a report presented by Mrs Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, the Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, Petitions, Human Rights and Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).

Tejuosho had presented the report of a Stakeholders meeting on a bill entitled; “A Bill for a Law to Provide for the Prohibition of the Act of Kidnapping and for Other Connected Purposes.”

The bill, which was sponsored by the Speaker of the House, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, prescribed life sentence to kidnappers, whose victims did not die in their custody.

It also states that any person, who kidnaps, abducts, detains, captures or takes another person by any means or tricks with intent to demand ransom or do anything against his/her will, commits an offence, and liable on conviction to death sentence.

The bill, which criminalised attempt to kidnap, stipulated also life imprisonment for anyone who make attempt to kidnap another person.

Also, the bill is against false representation to release a kidnapped or abducted person. This attracts seven years imprisonment.

The lawmakers also approved 25 years imprisonment to whoever threatens to kidnap another person through phone call, e-mail, text message or any other means of communication.

The bill provides that any person, who knowingly or wilfully allows or permits his premises, building or a place or belonging to which he has control of, to be used for the purposes of keeping a person kidnapped is guilty of an offence under the law and liable to 14 years imprisonment without an option of fine.

The lawmakers amended some sections of the bill during the debate on the committee report before adoption.

The bill, aimed at ensuring zero tolerance for kidnapping, however, awaits third reading before it will be sent to Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode for assent.
