The Hard Rock Cafe memorabilia collection includes music memorabilia including autographed guitars, costumes from world tours and rare photographs and the likes which are usually mounted on cafe walls.

King Sunny Ade’s guitar would join different legendary music artifacts like John Lennon’s wireframe tinted glasses, Jim Morrison’s famous brown leather pants, Madonna’s wedding dress from “Like a Virgin”, a guitar from rock band ‘Aerosmith’, B.B King’s guitar, Will.I.Am’s hat e.t.c.

This guitar is a vintage fender guitar which the King Sunny Ade fondly refers to as his “baby” as he purchased it from the genius of highlife, Sir Victor Olaiya and has played with it for over 30 years. It’s also the same guitar he used while composing his hit track “synchro system” which earned him his first Grammy nomination.

The induction was attended by celebrities as well as friends who came to show their appreciation to the veteran musician.

Mimiko: Profile In Treachery – Louis Odion

Mimiko: Profile In Treachery – Louis Odion

A cartoon published earlier by Punch offers perhaps the most prophetic foreword to the political tragedy that climaxed in Ondo on November 26. Someone in an unconscious state is sketched as being hustled away from the shelter of the Iroko (big oak tree) as a Good Samaritan mutters, “struck by lightning”.

Indisputably, the Iroko moniker is patent for the brand of politics Dr. Olusegun Mimiko has retailed in Ondo State in the past two decades. The ill-starred vagrant depicted in the cartoon could only be Eyitayo Jegede, a senior advocate he had anointed to succeed him as governor, only to finish poorly in last weekend’s polls.

This article was written by Loius Odion. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

The cartoonist’s surreal evocation is obviously rooted in Yoruba cosmology, which ordinarily invests the Iroko shrub with some metaphysical prowess. But in the event that such powers prove impotent under a tempest, so much that the proverbial lightning could strike so viciously right under its shadow, it is then safe to conclude that such Iroko must have “gba abode” (come under an evil spell).

What remains therefore is its decapitation as a rite in exorcism.

For a man who has, more or less, dominated Ondo politics in the last decade, it is so sad that Mimiko would end riotously on a low. Now completely stripped after the November 26 endgame and haunted still by the grotesque shadow of PDP in complete disarray on account of factionalisation, it would be entirely surprising today if Iroko is not already filled with nostalgia for the comfort and the peace of mind the old Labour Party had provided him before greed for power lured him to PDP in 2014.

For an outgoing governor, nothing indeed could be traumatising as the thought of a hostile takeover. For a man obsessed with the affectation of populism over the years and who, by action, seemed forever apprehensive about how future historians would accommodate him, how ironic that Mimiko will have to spend his remaining days in office agonising more on how to balance the naira and kobo in the financial book, let alone bother about what fate awaits the sundry cenotaphs carved in his image across the state.

But let no one shed tears for this prodigal son. Alas, the Iroko of perfidy is irreverently toppled by the whirlwind of Karma. Only poor students of history would not have foreseen this calamitous end for Mimiko.

In hindsight, it is obvious that the deep fissures in PDP at the national level contributed to Jegede’s defeat. But even as the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Mimiko acted up his billing as a political sailor without moral compass. All along, he continued to flirt with both the Makarfi camp and the Sheriff faction, perhaps shamelessly hoping to bed with one after the other. Until Jimoh Ibrahim locked the room and took away the key.

To be fair, overall, no one can deny the fallen Iroko credit for modest achievements in the area of improved healthcare (especially maternal welfare) and empowerment of market women through the provision of stalls and soft loans.

But with the hostile take-over of last weekend, Iroko has lost the opportunity to have a say in how his story in the last eight years will be officially documented. And the stories of his little miracles here and there will likely be completely obliterated when the “enemies” commence a re-write after his exit.

Essentially, Mimiko’s tragic flaw stems from the carnal assumption that political success is to be measured only by material acquisitions without subscribing to any enduring moral value. To believe in nothing and stand for nothing is the worst cardinal sin. Even common harlots are governed by some ethics – an obligation to keep clients’ confidentiality, for instance.

Now, Iroko’s loneliness should be framed in the proper context. In his hey-day, he conveniently chose to believe that politics and politicking could exist in a moral vacuum. A psychotic affliction which led my brother and colleague, Sam Omatseye, to memorably characterise him as “whitlow of the South-west”.

In his delusion, the medical-doctor-turned-politician forgot that politics is defined by an avowal of a set of values. Without that, the player is perhaps no better than a motor-park tout, scavenging for his next meal ticket.

To the scion of the otherwise illustrious Mimiko family of Ondo town, politics is all about self and the preservation of narrow interests. That explains why his political odyssey in the last seventeen years would now look more like an adventure in treachery and infamy.

As an appointee of Governor Ade Adefarati of Alliance for Democracy (AD) between 1999 and 2002, he was recruited by PDP to undermine his benefactor.

When Olusegun Agagu became governor in 2003 through PDP’s now infamous “operation totality” in the South-West, he was compensated with the plum office of Secretary to the State Government.

Barely two years later, he was “promoted” to Abuja as minister. But he wanted something bigger – Agagu’s job! That set him at odds with Obasanjo and Agagu and would ignite a chain of events culminating in his migration to the Labour Party in 2006.

His scant regard for loyalty explains why he later felt no scruples in trading the otherwise much cherished Labour badge away for a rickety accommodation in PDP two years ago, thus casually abandoning mid-stream the teeming community of workers across the country who had basked in the illusion of a toe-hold, if not foothold, in political power in Nigeria through Ondo.

Yet, when it mattered most, when the PDP hyenas callously left him defenestrated in 2006, it was the Labour Party that graciously offered him shelter and platform for rehabilitation. Having used the vehicle to gain a second term in office in 2012, he opted to trade with PDP. Without conscience, he owed workers a whopping six months salary, but had money to finance his surrogate’s election bid. Without shame, he again attempted to deceive the same labour unions weeks ago by urging them to vote Jegede with a laughable promise to pay after the elections.

The same lack of a sense of loyalty also explains why Mimiko hardly batted an eyelid three years ago before clamping down heavily on the popular Adaba FM in Akure. For airing news items he did not find flattering, he showed naked power by doing the unthinkable – digging a deep valley in the only access road to the station! That punitive action rendered it inaccessible to workers and clients.

Yet, when PDP “stole” his mandate in 2007 and he was left alone in the wilderness, the same Adaba FM provided him a platform to speak directly to the Ondo public, at no cost.

On personal levels, the ordeals of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim are now public knowledge. For all Tinubu’s moral and financial support during the protracted legal battle to reclaim his stolen mandate, Mimiko, emboldened by his new PDP friends in Abuja, would turn round to publicly call his old benefactor unprintable names during his re-election bid in 2012.

If Jimoh Ibrahim chose to go dirty and personal against Mimiko and his surrogate, it is probably the only way the maverick businessman imagined he could avenge what he considers a great betrayal. The story is told of how the Igbotako-born publisher of Mirror newspaper had extended huge financial support, as well as legal guidance and counseling to Mimiko while fighting Agagu between 2007 and 2008, even though the latter was supposed to be his kinsman.

But once Mimiko entered office, as the story goes, one of the early actions he took was to move against Ibrahim’s interest in Ondo’s hospitality sector.

In 2010 came a big drama at the Akure airport. On landing from Abuja in a chartered propeller aircraft, Mimiko decided to walk over and say “hello” to Ibrahim nestling in his new Challenger jet. But no sooner had the governor stepped onto the aisle than Ibrahim reportedly barked at him, wondering what strange coffee he drank: “Who invited you to my plane?! Get out of my plane!!”

With his security details left in a quandary as Ibrahim raised hell, Mimiko quietly left the scene.

The paths of the two old-buddies-turned-adversaries would again cross in 2011 when Ibrahim first sought to contest the governorship on the platform of PDP, the sponsorship of which he had then taken over earlier. As the story goes, former President Goodluck Jonathan counseled him to wait till 2016 as “Mimiko is working for me even though he’s in Labour Party.”

Though disappointed at the turn of events, Ibrahim obeyed Jonathan. Thus, “federal might” was put behind Mimiko to overrun APC’s Rotimi Akeredolu in 2012, rendering PDP’s own Olusola Oke a political orphan in the polls. But no sooner had Mimiko been sworn in for second term in 2013 than he, characteristically, decided to officially move over to PDP, thus displacing Ibrahim as the party leader in Ondo.

Extravagantly hoping Jonathan would deliver himself in 2015, Iroko began to see himself as PDP’s clearing-house in South-west and, ipso facto, the new Yoruba leader.

Today, the lightning has struck and Ibrahim is obviously having the last laugh.

NNPC, Stupidity and Niger Crude

Coming on the heels of the perceived “re-Northernisation” of the commanding height of NNPC and the presidential marching orders for the resuscitation of oil exploration in the Lake Chad trough, the Buhari administration’s latest pet project to construct 1,000km-pipeline to link the Kaduna refinery with Niger Republic is bound to further inflame the nation’s already tense ethnic relations.

Maikanti Baru, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, was quoted as announcing at a town hall meeting in Kaduna last week that the decision stems from the perennial difficulty experienced in transporting crude oil from the South-South to the Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Company (KRPC).

His words: “Due to challenges with the aged refinery and crude oil pipelines that had been breached severely, the operations of the refinery have been epileptic. This we’re determined to resolve through various intervention methods, including evaluation of alternative crude oil supply from Niger Republic through building of a pipeline of over 1,000 kilometers from Agadem to Kaduna.”

In fact, KRPC’s M. D., Idi Mukhtal, added that the plant was already being reconfigured in view of the new supply source, the way a butcher sharpens his knife before the slaughter.

For a significant undertaking with such profound implications for Nigeria’s sovereignty, it is quite alarming Baru acts and speaks so casually. One, much has been said about Nigeria’s disarticulated economy being the root of our national poverty in the face of abundant resources: we import what we already have and export what we seriously lack.

Baru’s latest gambit provides yet another comic illustration.

If the nation is witnessing a forex crisis today, it is partly because the bulk of what we earn from crude export is used to offset the importation of refined petroleum products. It is one vicious cycle. So, when Baru finished laying his funny pipeline to Niger, how will he be paying for the crude import?

Two, an argument has raged back and forth on the viability of the nation’s aging refineries in view of new economic realities, with a near consensus that the government no longer has business running them. In fact, experts have suggested the outright sale of the nation’s collection to private investors seen as better equipped to run them more profitably and efficiently.

That is why the privately owned 650,000 pbd Dangote Refinery expected to come on stream in two years offers some hope. So, how do we reconcile this with Baru’s proposal?

Three, it is obvious that the 1,000 kilometre pipeline is Karu’s own silver bullet to side-step the “headache” from Niger Delta militants opposed to the continued flow of crude from their soil to the North over perceived neglect and injustice. But that is being clever by half.

A more sustainable approach is to summon the political will and address the long-standing fundamental issues verging on fiscal federalism rather than seeking a cheap escape route.

In any case, is it not the same South-South that would invariably finance the construction of the proposed 1,000 kilometres pipeline through the daily harvest of crude oil?

“Why The Naira Will Continue To Fall”

Featured Image

Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, the President, Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), has identified some of the rationales behind the continuous fall of the naira.

According to Gwadabe, speculation, hoarding and increasing zero confidence of foreign investors among others are some of the reasons for the continuous spike of the local currency in the exchange market.

READ ALSO: Is The Central Bank Driving Prices Up?

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted him as saying that the existence of a Non-Derivable Forward market in London that enjoyed the patronage of Nigerian companies and foreign investors also contributed to dollar liquidity challenge.

Gwadabe said the NDF market rate hovers around N430 to a dollar.

He said, “The existence of that market is a challenge to liquidity inflow to our own market.”

The financial expert explained that Diaspora remittances had recently declined as most of the newly registered International Money Transfers Operators had yet to send inflows.

Gwadabe called for a robust and sustainable dialogue between operators in the forex market and the regulator to ensure an urgent solution to “the unfortunate situation”.

He noted that most countries experiencing recession were already getting out of it but wondered why the Nigerian situation was “lukewarm’’.

Gwadabe said that the regulators encouraged flexibility in the rates of foreign investors’ inflows as a temporary measure to boost liquidity in the market.

He called on the regulators of the forex market to also boost supply to the BDCs sub-sector.

As Promised, Wole Soyinka Destroys His Green Card

Featured Image

Nigerian Nobel prize-winning author Wole Soyinka has made good his threat to destroy his American residency green card and leave the country if “Donald Trump wins the presidential election.”

READ ALSO: I’ll Destroy My Green Card, Leave The United States If Trump Wins – Soyinka

Shortly before the election, Soyinka, a scholar-in-residence at New York University’s Institute of African American Affairs, had vowed to give up his permanent US residency over a Trump victory to protest against the Republican billionaire’s campaign promises to get tough on immigration.

The Noble Laureate had said: “If in the unlikely event he does win, the first thing he’ll do is to say [that] all green-card holders must reapply to come back into the US. Well, I’m not waiting for that.”

“The moment they announce his victory, I will cut my green card myself and start packing up.”

Immediately Trump was declared winner of the presidential election, Nigerians took to social media to urge the scholar to “couple his words with action.”

However, while speaking at a conference in South Africa, the internationally-acclaimed playwright and poet said he had thrown away the green card and returned to where he had always been.

“I have already done it; I have disengaged (from the United States). I have done what I said I would do,” he reportedly told AFP on the sideline.

“I had a horror of what is to come with Trump… I threw away the (green) card, and I have relocated, and I’m back to where I have always been.”

However, Mr Soyinka is not inviting others to follow suit:
It’s useful in many ways; I wouldn’t for one single moment discourage any Nigerians or anybody from acquiring a green card… … but I have had enough of it.”

According to AFP, he has been reported to have recently completed a term as scholar-in-residence at New York University’s Institute of African American Affairs.

Biafra: Kanu To Remain In Prison As Court Refuses Him Bail Again

Featured Image

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday again refused the bail application sought by leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, while turning down his bail application, equally refused bail applications made by three other pro-Biafra agitators, Mr. Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, who are facing trial alongside Kanu.

At Thursday’s ruling, the trial judge said that the charge of treasonable felony, which hands on the necks of the defendants, attracts‎ a life sentence, adding that it was not bailable.

Nyako, therefore, denied them bail on the grounds that their case was sensitive to national security.

“The offences are serious in nature. I hereby refuse the bail and order accelerated hearing within two months,” said Justice Nyako.

All attempts made by the embattled IPOB leader – since his arrest in October 2015 – to be released from the custody of the State Security Service, have proved abortive.

Nyako is third judge to handle Kanu’s trial after two other‎ judges withdrew from the case.

John Tsoho, the second judge to withdraw from the trial after Ahmed Mohammed, had denied Kanu bail, remanding him in Kuje prison where he has been for‎ months.

In October 2015, a magistrate court discharged and acquitted Kanu of all charges of terrorism, but the Department‎ of States Services (DSS), kept him in detention.

Two Men Caught With Heroin At Lagos Airport

Featured Image

A commercial tri-cyclist in Owerri, Imo State, and an Abuja trader have been caught by National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officials at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos with 6.390kg of substances that tested positive for heroin.

The trader, King Sunday, was arrested by NDLEA officials while transporting 2.490kg of heroin. According to him, he went into the drug smuggling business because he needed money to take his newly wed wife of four days to a lovely destination for their honeymoon.

NDLEA Lagos Airport Commander Ahmadu Garba said “Egwin arrived from Kigali on a Rwanda Airline flight while Sunday imported the drug found on him from Nairobi during inward screening of passengers on an Ethiopian Airline flight. The suspects are being investigated.”

“Preliminary investigation by the agency, however, indicated that drug trafficking cartels are gradually changing their mode of operation by turning to African countries in sourcing narcotic drugs like heroin. The suspects were also recruited for a fee to import the drugs into the country. Egwin who is not married said he needed money to repair his commercial tricycle while Sunday who left his wife after four days of marriage under the guise of a business trip said that he needed money for his honeymoon and business.” The Commander added.

When interrogated, the 38-year-old Sunday who was arrested as he arrived Nigeria from Kenya, said

“I erroneously took the decision to smuggle drugs barely four days after my marriage. I was in need of money for my honeymoon and also for my business but I should not have involved myself in drug trafficking. My thinking was that I could smuggle the drug from Nairobi in two days without my wife knowing that I travelled out of the country. All my life, I have been upright in my transactions but this is a huge mistake and I regret my action.”

The second suspect, Egwin Chinedu, a commercial tricyclist in Owerri was arrested on arrival from Kigali, Rwanda with 3.900kg of heroin . When interrogated, Chinedu said he needed the money to fix his Tricycle as well as settle his Landlord.

“The engine of my tricycle which is my only source of livelihood is bad. While I was looking for money to fix it, I was introduced to the man that promised to pay me N400,000 on the condition that I will bring his drug from Kigali. I accepted the offer because nobody was willing to help me. Apart from the repairs, my rent is due and my landlord has been asking for his money,”

The drugs discovered in their luggage by the NDLEA has an estimated street value of N575 million.

Wenger Has No Timetable On Cazorla Return

Featured Image

Arsenal fans have something to worry about and it is the lack of a return date for injured Santi Cazorla. Even Arsene Wenger doesn’t know when he will be fit to play.

The Spanish midfielder has been out of action since October with an Achilles problem and has not played since the win over Ludogrets.

Wenger had suggested back on November 22 that Cazorla could be two weeks away from returning to the first team but now admits he does not know when he will be back.

He told reporters: “Cazorla I don’t know, honestly. It’s just inflammation. It can go in two days, two weeks – I don’t know.

“He has no setback, the inflammation is just still here. At the moment, it’s stable.”

Arsenal were beaten 2-0 by Southampton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night and, having made 10 changes to his team, Wenger insists he has no regrets over his team selection.

“I regret the way the game went,” he added.

“We have played well until now and when you look at the players who didn’t play tonight, they were on the edge physically.

“When you look at the team we had, I don’t think that was the problem. We didn’t have the right urgency from the beginning of the game.”

Nigeria Gets Special Concession As OPEC Agrees To Cut Oil Output

Featured Image

Nigeria, Iran and Libya got special concessions on Wednesday, as the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) agreed to cut oil production by 1.2 million barrels per day, effective January 1, 2017.

The cut, which is coming after 8 previous attempts failed since 2008, is considered a massive boost to efforts by the global oil cartel to shore up oil prices and end a record glut that has paralyzed economies.

Speaking at the opening of the 171st ordinary meeting, Mohammed Bin Saleh Al-Sada, OPEC conference president, expressed optimism that the deal would become a reality, considering work done since the Algiers accord was consummated.

He said: “As the history of OPEC has shown and as many of our predecessors will no doubt acknowledge, the road to success is not always easy to navigate.”

“However, as we have shown over the past few months, with hard work, drive and commitment from all of us, we can overcome challenges and obstacles through cooperation and compromise.

“I feel we have already taken great steps to shape a fair and common understanding among us all.  And I have the sense that everyone here remains committed to ensuring we find the solutions needed to implement the ‘Algiers Accord’.

“We all have a common goal of developing a lasting solution that brings forward the rebalancing process, reduces the length of the downturn, lessens volatility and stabilizes the market.”

While initiating the resolution in September, three countries, namely Nigeria, Iran and Libya were proposed as candidates for exemptions in consideration of their peculiar circumstances.

Nigeria was recommended for exemption to enable it recover from the negative impact of incessant attacks on its oil facilities by armed militant groups in the Niger Delta region, which resulted in a massive cut in its production and exports capacities.

Libya was equally proposed for special consideration on similar grounds, following series of attacks on its oil facilities by terrorists groups operating in that region in recent months.

While Iran was excluded to allow the country settle down and recover, after serving years of U.S.-imposed sanctions, including restrictions on its oil production and exports.

Following the news of the cut, crude oil prices rose by more than 10 percent.

At 0630 GMT on Thursday, after a brief dip in early Asian trade, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for January delivery was up 70 cents or 1.42 percent at $50.14, while Brent crude for February was 81 cents or 1.6 percent higher at $52.65.

“Not only had hopes of higher prices been realised, the reputation of the OPEC has also been salvaged, prompting the surge,” said Jingyi Pan, market strategist at IG in Singapore.

“Sceptics have now placed their focus on the implementation of the OPEC deal where Saudi Arabia will be shouldering the bulk of the cut.”

OPEC is expected to officially speak on this at a press conference by 4pm Nigerian time.

N10m Scam: EFCC Impersonator Bags 14-Year Jail Term

A certain notorious fraudster, who specialises in impersonating staff of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to defraud from unsuspecting victims, has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment without option of fine.

The suspect, Abiodun Edward, who is a member of a syndicate, was arraigned on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 before Justice Beatrice Iliya of the state high court Gombe and prosecuted on a 3-count charge of impersonation and obtaining by false pretence the sum of N10million.

A statement issued by EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, read:

“The convict and his accomplices, Murtala Bello and Esther Momoh, who are still at large, had allegedly claimed to be staff of EFCC Abuja Office, in order to defraud one Umar Bello.

“The complainant alleged that Bello had, on March 13, 2015 phoned him, assuring him that the convict could “kill” a petition purportedly written against him, if he could part with a sum of N10million.

“Consequently, Bello was said to have sent the phone number of Momoh who claimed to be a principal detective superintendent, PDS, with EFCC to the victim for further discussion on how the money could be paid to them.

“The complainant later alleged that after negotiation, the convict agreed to collect N300,000.00 (three hundred thousand naira) from him when he could not raise the initial N10million.”

The statement further noted that the complainant further said one ‘Laolu Adegbite’ who claimed to be the officer handling his purported case, sent an SMS to him to appear before the commission on March 23, 2015.

He said following the persistent threat by the convict, he paid the sum of N50,000.00 (fifty thousand naira) into the convict’s Diamond Bank account number, 0044213102, which was sent to him by Momoh on March 25, 2015.

Apparently peeved by the persistent threat by the convict over the balance of N250, 000.00 (two hundred and fifty thousand naira), the victim petitioned EFCC, which led to convict’s arrest and subsequent prosecution.

Justice Iliya found Edward guilty of the two counts and sentenced him to seven years imprisonment on each of the count without option of fine.

The sentences are to run concurrently from the date of the convict’s arraignment.

Featured Image

The Federal Government on Wednesday sought to tender documents of over 30 bank accounts – in evidence – used to allegedly launder money by former Governor Murtala Nyako who is facing trial in the Federal High Court Abuja.

Mr. Nyako, the former governor of Adamawa and seven others, including companies, are standing trial before Justice Okon Abang on a 37-count charge bordering on money laundering.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is accusing them of criminal conspiracy, abuse of office, opening of multiple bank accounts and theft to the tune of N29 billion.

The defendants were said to have opened over 30 different accounts with Zenith Bank Plc. with the money between 2011 and 2013.

At the resumed sitting, the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, sought to tender the documents used in opening the account through the bank’s officer, Olabode Farinoola, who identified himself as a compliant officer.

“Some of the names used by the defendants in opening these accounts are Tropical Agro Farms Clinic Ltd, Redcapet Protocol Ltd, Tower Asset Management Ltd and Government Service Department account.

“Others are office of the secretary to the state government, Muru Ngbula-Joran, Bincola Engineering Service Ltd, Blue Ribbon Service and Travel Tour Ltd and Blue Opal Nigeria Ltd.”

“Others are Pagoda Petroleum Marketing Ltd, Pagoda Fortunes Nigeria Ltd, Sebore Farms Extension Service Ltd and Blue Opal Nigeria Ltd (Project account), Kikary Investment Ltd, Blue Ribbon Multilink Ltd, Russelley Farms Nigeria Ltd and Agric International Tech Trade among others,” Mr. Jacobs said.

In a quick reaction, Counsel to Nyako, Kanu Agabi, prayed the court for an adjournment to enable the defendants ascertain the authenticity of the documents before it is tendered in by the prosecution.

“I plead for adjournment to enable the defence to go through the documents the prosecution seeks to tender through the witness,” Agabi prayed.

Subsequently, Okon Abang, the judge, adjourned the hearing to December 14 and 15 to enable the defence go through the documents.

FEC Approves Nigeria’s 2017 Budget Proposal

Featured Image

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved the country’s 2017 budget proposal – which will now be forwarded to the National Assembly for consideration and approval.

The approval was made known to State House correspondents by the Minister of budget and national planning, Udoma Udo Udoma, after a marathon FEC meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The minister also added that the MTEF, which was described by the Senate as empty, is a comprehensive document that emanated from wide consultations with key stakeholders.

He said, “The budget has been approved by the Federal Executive Council. The details will be revealed when the president presents the budget to the National Assembly.

“The MTEF was a very well prepared document after extensive consultations. We consulted the private sector, NGOs, etc.

“But the assumptions of that MTEF were assumptions which were true and correct as of the time it was prepared in August. Naturally, the estimates may vary; every time you (have to) improve on your estimate based on the latest estimates.”

On when the president will present the budget to the National Assembly, he said:

“With regards to the date, the president will be communicating to the National Assembly and, of course, it will be at the National Assembly’s discretion ultimately. The president will write to them, and after they confirm, then the president can come to address them.”

The minister explained that one of the issues raised by the Senate was the exchange rate which the executive put at N290 to $ and explained that, that was the valid exchange rate at the time.

Fayose Drops Bombshell: ‘I May Dump PDP In 2018’

Featured Image

In an apparent attempt to evade the leadership crisis currently engulfing the upper echelon of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state has hinted that he may seek another political platform to prosecute his succession battle in the 2018 governorship poll.

Speaking on Wednesday in Ikere Ekiti, while meeting with the members of the Suppliers’ Association of Nigeria, Ikere chapter, Fayose also argued that the victory of Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, in the Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State did not in any way threaten the supremacy of the PDP in Ekiti.

He said: “I don’t know the platform I will use for the 2018 election yet and at the appropriate time, I will tell you. We are still studying the situation. We have to play the game left, right and centre and whoever we are going to use and the platform, you will all be part of the process because party politics is about the people.

“You all saw how people sold their votes in Ondo State, I am confident that that will not happen in Ekiti. I am close to the people; you are the source of my strength. Even if it requires just 48 hours to any election, if I tell you where to go, you will surely follow me there.”

In another meeting with the junior members of staff in the state civil service, the governor bragged that he would repeat the victory he got in all the 16 Local Government Areas when he defeated former governor Kayode Fayemi in 2014.

His words: “The APC will be fooling itself if it thinks it will conquer Ekiti like it did in Ondo. Ekiti is a peculiar place and I am the man on the ground here. I want to assure my supporters and Nigerians that the APC won’t win a local government here in 2018, even if President Muhammadu Buhari moves down all the money in the Federal Government’s Treasury Single Account.

“Governor Olusegun Mimiko and Eyitayo Jegede must have lost in Ondo State, but that does not mean the people had voted rightly. In 2015, people clamoured for change and what have we got now? Nigerians are becoming poorer than ever.

“Today, I am the only one among the APC governors in the South-West. I am now like the nation of Israel surrounded by enemies, but I shall defeat and triumph over them.

“The APC has never defeated me in any battle, either political or legal. Whether they like it or not, I will win in Ekiti no matter the animosity, because I have the people behind me.”

Emery: PSG’s Progress Is Coming Slowly

Featured Image

PSG endured a tumultuous start to the Ligue 1 season, but manager Unai Emery believes they’re making progress, albeit at a slow pace.

The capital club are now second on the table and a point behind Nice at the summit, after recording a 2-0 win over Angers courtesy of goals from Thiago Silva and Cavani.

PSG are currently on an unbeaten streak of 12 games and Emery is glad they’re making progress.

“It was an important match to win, for the three points, for the table and because it was a home game,” Emery said at a news conference.

“We put in a solid performance against a difficult team that was very compact in defence. Ligue 1 is very competitive, with PSG and other good teams like Lyon, Monaco and Saint-Etienne. This is a strong league.

“But I am mainly thinking about our own performances and it pays off if we do our job. I am satisfied with the two goals and we got some more chances. We are slowly making progression.”

Emery’s men will take on Montpellier on Saturday, while Nice face Toulouse.

EFL Cup Draw: Manchester United And Liverpool Could Meet In Wembley Final

Featured Image

There’s a high possibility of Manchester United and Liverpool playing the EFL cup final at Wembley, after they missed each other in the semifinal draw.

Manchester United will face Hull City in a home and away fixture, with Klopp’s men facing a Southampton side that shocked Arsenal to a 2-0 win.

Manchester United needed a stoppage time winner from Marcus Rashford to secure the winner against Hull City last time out. This is the first League Cup semifinal the Tigers will play in after beating Newcastle on penalties.

Liverpool will face a familiar foe in Southampton, a side they thrashed 6-1 in this same competition last season.

The first legs of the ties will be held on the week commencing January 9, with the following games a fortnight later.

Mourinho: Halftime Pep Talk Did The Trick

Featured Image

Manchester United romped to a 4-1 EFL cup victory over West Ham and Mourinho has credited his halftime pep talk for the victory.

The former Chelsea manager was not in the dugout due to a touchline ban, but the Red Devils secured semifinal spot courtesy of a brace of goals from both Martial and Ibrahimovic.

Manchester United were in control of the proceedings, but went into the break level, which left Mourinho’s men in need of some words of encouragement.

“After their goal we had 10 minutes where we felt it deeply and the players couldn’t hide that, because West Ham’s first shot they equalised,” the United boss, whose side drew Hull City in the last four, told Sky Sports.

“But in the second half the team again got the confidence to play and to win comfortably and playing beautiful, attacking football, which is something the fans like, but we need results.

“I told them at half-time that it’s not possible to play so well and because of a goal you stop playing so well.

“I told them forget the goal. We are playing so well that we have to keep confidence, so forget the undeserved goal. Forget that at half-time we should be winning and we aren’t.

“And in the second half we had the goals. Goals plus performance means the real happiness.”

Henrikh Mkhitaryan turned in a man-of-the-match display and the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder may have played his way into contention for a starting berth in the Premier League.

Mourinho added: “I’m so happy because he was against a Premier League team with Premier League qualities and Premier League characteristics.

“That showed clearly his evolution because against Feyenoord [in the Europa League] we could think, ‘Okay, it’s a different profile of football’ – this was against a proper and typical Premier League team and Micky could perform in this way.

“We know the reason we brought him and we were waiting for his evolution and it looks like it’s coming.”

Lakers’ Young Out For 2-4 Weeks

Featured Image

Injury season? Los Angeles Lakers have announced that starting guard Nick Young will be out for at least four weeks with a strained right calf muscle.

The team made the announcement in advance of their clash against the Chicago Bulls.

The 31-year-old Lakers man sustained the injury on Tuesday in the Los Angeles franchise’s loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.

The shooting guard, who can also play small forward is averaging 13.3 points for the Lakers and has been one of the team’s biggest surprises after two tumultuous seasons under ex-Lakers head coach Byron Scott.

With Young out, the Lakers will be missing their starting backcourt, as Lakers point guard D’Angelo Russell is also sidelined with a sore left knee.

Rooney To Miss Everton Clash Due To Suspension

Featured Image

Wayne Rooney started his career at Everton and was due to face them this weekend, but will miss that clash due to a suspension after he was handed a yellow against West Ham.

The England international made his debut for the Merseyside outfit at the age of 16, before he swapped for the red of Manchester United.

Rooney will miss the match after receiving a yellow card in the second half of the 4-1 win over West Ham in the EFL cup.

The England captain’s fifth yellow of the season, which results in a straight yellow, came after a clash with Edmilson Fernandes shortly after the break.

He is set to miss a must win match for Manchester United, if they’re to stay in the title race.
