Featured Image

MLS side New York City FC have completed the signing of Sean Okoli from FC Cincinnati.

The striker enjoyed a remarkable 2016 in Ohio where he was named United Soccer League MVP, made the All-League Team and won the Golden Boot for his 16 goals in 29 games.

Okoli told NYCFC.com: “The beautiful game can take you to some great places and I feel so blessed to be here. I know the team plays attacking football and I love that, so I’m looking forward to being a part of it.

“It means a lot to play under Patrick Vieira – he’s been everywhere I want to be as a player and I know he has a lot of offer, so I’m excited to get working with as I just want to continue to grow.”

Okoli was part of the Seattle Sounders’ academy before deciding to play college soccer for Wake Forest.

He played in three league games for the Sounders in 2014 before they traded him to the New England Revolution, with whom he appeared in five games in 2015.

“I know David Villa is a very special player who has scored big goals for big clubs so I just want to help continue this club’s success and score goals with him and with the rest of the team.”

“I’m really happy to welcome Sean to this club as he is a talented striker who we believe has an exciting future in the game,” NYCFC coach Patrick Vieira said in a statement.

“Having had the opportunity to speak to him, he also is the kind of person we want at this club and I’m sure he is going to work hard to build on the excellent 2016 he enjoyed at Cincinnati.

“To win the Golden Boot and to be named as MVP in USL at his age are great achievements and so I’m looking forward to working with him in preseason and throughout next year.”

Reports : Liverpool End Interest In Borussia Monchengladbach Midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud

Featured Image

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has ended his interest in Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud, according to reports in the British media.

There were plenty of rumours linking the Merseyside club to the 20-year-old, but their pursuit has cooled in recent months ahead of the January window.

Most recently, German publication Express suggested the Reds would make a £26 million bid for the 20-year-old on the turn of the year, as Klopp continues to mould his squad.

However, with Dahoud emerging as a target for Dortmund, Liverpool’s interest has “cooled,” according to the Mail‘s Dominic King.

King confirms Dahoud was a “prime target” for Klopp in the summer, but the 49-year-old, is now focussing his attention on signing another winger in the January transfer window.

This could leave Dortmund free to sign the Syrian-born star, who has fallen out of favour at Borussia-Park this season.

Dahoud has made 10 appearances for Gladbach so far in 2016/17, including only four starts in the Bundesliga—however, he remains a young talent with vast potential.

According to German newspaper Bild, Dortmund are preparing an offer for Dahoud in January, involving ex-Reds loanee Nuri Sahin.

The Tin-Can Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted a 20ft container of “READY TO EAT FOODS” like Egusi Soup, Jollof Rice, Ogbono, Yam Porridge imported from India.

This disclosure was made known by the Customs Area Comptroller, Bashar Yusuf, in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Lagos.

Mr. Yusuf spoke with stakeholders at the SDV/SCOA Terminal while handing over the container of imported prepared foods to officials of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

The controller described the scenario as an “aberration”, considering the fact that government granted zero duty for the importation of machinery for the packaging of agricultural products.

Yusuf in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Command, Mr. Uche Ejesieme, said “Why should indigenous menu be imported into the country at a time when investors are much sought after to boost local industries.”

In the meantime, the controller said the command generated N25.7bn in November, up from N25.3bn recorded in October.

Yusuf said that the higher revenue was recorded in spite of the recession and low imports.

He said that the command would continue to explore all avenues for maximum revenue collection.

According to him, this is in view of the exigencies of the moment, which placed more responsibilities on the service.

Hat-trick Hero : Liverpool Rejectee Adam Morgan Urged To Remain At Curzon Ashton

Featured Image

Former Liverpool academy star Adam Morgan has been urged to stay put at Curzon Ashton after his eye-catching hat-trick against League One side AFC Wimbledon on Sunday.

It took the 22-year-old’s tally to nine goals in seven games since moving to the Tameside club in October, a welcome change in fortune for a player whose career had stalled since he was released by then Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers three years ago.

Curzon boss John Flanagan said: “I think the reason Adam is scoring goals again is we’ve embraced him and he knows we think the world of him. He is a talented lad and he would be a fool to move on, to be quite honest.

“Adam can score goals for sure but if he’s got any sense he should stay where he is. We know at the end of the day if he wants to get back into pro football there might be an opportunity, but whether the pros are looking at him we don’t know.”

Trump Inauguration: Soyinka To Hold Funeral And Mourn Death Of Nigeria’s Common Sense

Featured Image

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has disclosed that he will hold a private funeral on January 20 when United States President-elect, Donald Trump, is inaugurated as President.

READ ALSO: As Promised, Wole Soyinka Destroys His Green Card

The Nigerian Nobel prize-winning author made this known today, December 5, while speaking to journalists at the Freedom Park in Lagos.

His words: “On the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration, I will have a private funeral keep to mourn the death of Nigeria’s common sense. If the board agrees (because I do not like to be authoritarian) I will move the residency of my foundation out of the country.”

“Our common sense is totally lost. I am embarrassed sometimes that I occupy the same nation space with some people.”

The professor flayed at Nigerians, saying that they do not have the right to query his personal decision to tear his US green card.

Shortly before the election, Soyinka, a scholar-in-residence at New York University’s Institute of African American Affairs, had vowed to give up his permanent US residency over a Trump victory to protest against the Republican billionaire’s campaign promises to get tough on immigration.

The Noble Laureate had said: “If in the unlikely event he does win, the first thing he’ll do is to say [that] all green-card holders must reapply to come back into the US. Well, I’m not waiting for that.”

“The moment they announce his victory, I will cut my green card myself and start packing up.”

Immediately Trump was declared winner of the presidential election, Nigerians took to social media to urge the scholar to “couple his words with action.”

On Thursday, December 1, the revered playwright and Nobel laureate fulfilled his pledge to destroy his residency permit .

“I have already done it; I have disengaged (from the United States). I have done what I said I would do,” he reportedly told AFP on the sideline.

“I had a horror of what is to come with Trump… I threw away the (green) card, and I have relocated, and I’m back to where I have always been.”

Apparently peeved by the reactions of some Nigerians on social media, Soyinka described his critics as “noisome creatures.”

He vented: “Let me end with a Red Card to those noisome creatures, the nattering nit-wits of Internet: maybe Trumpland is not as despicable as the Naijaland you impose on our reality from your secure cesspits of anonymity. Go back to school. Your problem is ignorance, ignorance of whatever subject you so readily comment upon. Learn to study your subjects before opening up on issues beyond your grasp.”

Formula One : Mercedes Refuses To Rule Out Fernando Alonso For 2017 Grand Prix

Featured Image

Fernando Alonso and Mercedes have played down rumours linking the Spanish driver with Nico Rosberg’s newly-vacant 2017 seat.

Team boss Toto Wolff has made a point of saying that almost every F1 driver has been in contact since Rosberg’s seismic retirement news on Friday.

Some reports said that Alonso, currently under contract to McLaren-Honda, was an early favourite to reunite with his former teammate Lewis Hamilton.

“If I was Niki Lauda or Toto Wolff, my first choice would be Fernando Alonso,” Jo Ramirez, the former McLaren team manager, told Marca.

Yet Wolff admitted to Germany’s Bild am Sonntag that the way Alonso and Hamilton clashed in 2017 is still remembered.

“Of course Fernando has a [past] story,” he said.

“It was at McLaren but it also had a lot to do with Mercedes and did not end very nicely.

“But at the same time, we are going to be defending our title in the constructors’ world championship, so I would not rule anyone out.”

Team chairman Niki Lauda said even watertight F1 contracts can be broken.

“There are many contracts with small print and performance clauses,” he told Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung newspaper.

“It is now our duty to find these clauses among the drivers who are interested in us.”

Yet at an end of year Honda event in Japan, Alonso indicated that he has every intention of staying with McLaren-Honda.

“It is an honour to be on this team,” he said.

“We are in this fight to win, and I say to all the Japanese fans, I’ll see you again next year.”

The 2017 season begins with the Australian Grand Prix in March.

In the white paper, which was sighted by Premium Times, the government said:

“For all intent and purpose, the IMN is an insurgent group and ought to be treated as such.”

The government also stated that it would hold the detained Shiite leader, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, responsible for all acts carried out by the group’s members.

“Members of the IMN owe absolute loyalty to Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky,” the white paper states.

“He therefore bears responsibility for all the acts of lawlessness committed by the organisation and should therefore be held responsible, fully investigated and prosecuted.”

Further findings in the white paper also indicated that the state government may not prosecute the soldiers involved in the killing of over 300 members of the IMN in December last year.

The 24-year-old was picture raising his middle finger to a section of Barca fans as Los Blancos celebrated their late equaliser at the home of their arch rivals.

Carvajal admits that he should not have provoked the home side’s fanbase, which he said was done in retaliation for taunts made towards him during the late drama in Catalonia – a result that keeps Madrid six points clear at the summit.

“I’d like to apologise for the gesture to a portion of the fans, responding to insults,” he said on Twitter. “It’s something that shouldn’t be done.”

Carvajal, who has appeared 11 time for Madrid in La Liga this term, could still be punished by Spanish football chiefs if he is found guilty of inciting the opposition fans.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Insists He Could Have Sent Seamus Coleman To Sleep If He Wanted

Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has insisted that he did not kick Everton defender Seamus Coleman in the head on purpose during Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic appeared to leave his boot in after getting in a tangle with his opponent – an incident that went unpunished at the time as referee Michael Oliver did not see it.

Ibrahimovic did not take kindly to suggestions that he deliberately set out to hurt Coleman, who was replaced soon after due to the force of the landing, saying that he could ‘put an opponent’ to sleep should he wish.

“It was a physical game. They played hard,” he told MUTV. “I heard one of the commentators say I kicked someone in the head on purpose, but it was a 50-50 duel and he pulled me down.

“Trust me, if I want to kick someone in the head, I know how to kick someone in the head and make him fall asleep. That is the only thing I have to say.”

Middlesbrough Winger Adama Traore Loving Life At The Club

Featured Image

Winger Adama Traore says he is enjoying life at Middlesbrough after suffering relegation with Aston Villa last season.

Having come through Barcelona’s La Masia academy, the Spaniard moved to Villa Park at the start of the 2015/16 season, but failed to make an impact as the club dropped down to the Sky Bet Championship.

“My life in Middlesbrough is good. It is a little different out in Spain, but I think it’s good,” he told Soccer Saturday.

“I am happy to come here. The first thing is to play and help the team but life in Middlesbrough is good. The weather is different and it is so, so cold. I’ve always lived in Barcelona and it’s not normally that cold. This is my job and I love it, but it is colder on the pitch.”

“I think the time I spent at Aston Villa was difficult. It was a difficult time and a difficult moment for the team. For me, when I was coming from the second division in Spain into the first division here and it was my first time, I needed some time to go into the team and play.

“The team needed to win and they kept losing, and it wasn’t helpful that I went into the team but this moment has passed, and now I am here.

“When there is a difficult moment, you need to stay strong because it’s difficult when you don’t play. My first point from going out of Barcelona was to play and I came to Aston Villa and when you don’t play, it is difficult.

Traore joined La Masia in 2004 and spent ten years in the academy before going on to make 63 appearances for Barcelona B.

However, he made only one appearance for the first team and describes how he felt a move away from the Nou Camp was the best thing for his career.

“Every player has a dream to play at Barcelona for a long time, but you have different roles for the team,” he added.

“The club told me I could stay but I said in the moment, I need a new experience. I need to go to the Premier League to play and learn because I need to progress and if I can’t play in the premier division and in the first team here, I need to go to another club.

“It very different here. Not only personally, but it is a different culture, different tactics in the game, a different team but I think it is good for me to learn about these things in another country. Everything is good for my game and my learning.”

Martin Demichelis Set To Quit Spanish Club Espanyol

Ex-Man City defender Martin Demichelis could return to his first club River Plate in January, says Ole.

The 35-year-old left City to join Espanyol on a free transfer last summer, but he has barely figured for the La Liga club this term.

As such, he is considering leaving Catalonia in January and Argentine publication Ole reports that River Plate are interested in bringing him back to Buenos Aires.

Espanyol coach Quique Sanchez Flores prefers a central pairing of Diego Reyes and David Lopez, which has seen Demichelis manage just two appearances.

Rubén Duarte and Víctor Álvarez also do not count for the Madrid coach.

It could mean all three players will move on in January.

FRSC Denies Distributing Firearms To Officials

Featured Image

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Monday urged Nigerians – in a statement of denial – to disregard information claiming that the agency had begun distribution of firearms to its officials.

READ ALSO: FG Approves Firearms For FRSC Officials

Speaking to Premium Times, the Commission stated that the rumour was being disseminated by mischievous elements looking to foment disorder in the society.

According to the FRSC Head of Media Relations, Bisi Kazeem, some mischievious elements took a recent statement of the Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, out of context to suit their agenda.

He said: “The Corps Marshal was lamenting the recent findings that 70 marshals lost their lives this year alone to some outlawed motorists.”

“He then stated that such a high number of losses could have been avoided if FRSC personnel were carrying arms as allowed by the law.

“But he quickly added that there is no immediate plan to implement the law allowing officials to carry arms.”

“It’s unfortunate that some wicked people now took that to mean that he said officials are now being armed,” he said. “It’s a figment of their imagination.”

The disclaimer is coming after the social media was overwhelmed with reports on the development between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.

FRSC Denies Distributing Firearms To Officials

A twitter user had circulated a picture that depicted road safety officials being drilled by the Nigerian Army on how to handle firearms.

However, Mr. Kazeem said the picture was dug out from trainings that took place years ago to make it seem as if it’s part of a purported new arrangement to arm officials.

“We’ve been undergoing such trainings on regular intervals since 1992 when Ibrahim Babangida was in office,” Mr. Kazeem said. “But we have never put the exercise in general practice of our operation and we have no plans of implementing it in the nearest future.”

We Must Defeat Boko Haram In December – Buratai

Featured Image

The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has called on troops deployed in the north-east to buckle up and ensure that remnants of Boko Haram terrorists are completely cleared before this year comes to an end.

This he said in a statement to the troops, a copy of which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Abuja.

The statement read: “In this regard, no stone should be left unturned. I, therefore, call on all officers and soldiers to buckle up and ensure that remnants of Boko Haram terrorists are completely cleared.

“I hope to be with you sometime this month – December, to motivate and positively influence the ongoing operations.

“This is with a view to having a colourful end of year and peaceful Yuletide in the North-East and indeed Nigeria.

“I urge all commanders to plan and embark on effective patrols, raids, ambushes and deliberate attacks in conjunction with other Services especially the Nigerian Air Force and Nigerian Navy, to rescue all those abducted by the terrorists.

“I also wish to remind all troops that captured and surrendered Boko Haram terrorists must be treated humanely and fairly and in strict accordance with the provisions of International Humanitarian Law and Laws of Armed Conflict.”

The COAS, however, said that in doing that they must be prepared to enter “all fortresses, camps, dens and enclaves of the Boko Haram to completely flush them out and dominate these areas to ensure they are not reoccupied”.

“I wish to reiterate that December is a month of decision.

“It is either we succeed in clearing the remnants of Boko Haram terrorists or we continue to live in perpetual circle of their atrocities in the North-East.

“I, hereby, want to reassure all troops that I intend to return everybody to Barracks in 2017 only leaving behind a strong, highly mobile, effective and motivated force that will continue to do the good work that we have already started.”

Roma Ready To Sign Out-of-favour Paris Saint-Germain Striker Jese Rodriguez

Roma are tracking PSG forward Jese Rodriguez, reports La Reppublica.

Jese joined PSG from Real during the summer transfer window, but he has failed to make an impact in the French capital.

He has barely figured under coach Unai Emery and is reportedly willing to listen to any offers that come his way.

According to La Reppublica, Roma are keen on the Spaniard and want to sign him on loan in January.

Both clubs have a great rapport as they have made a few deals in the past including Marquinhos and Digne.

Roma are currently second in the Italian Serie A standings, four points off leaders Juventus. PSG on the other hand are third in the French Ligue 1 standings, three points off first placed Nice. PSG take on Mario Balotelli’s Nice next week in what should be a crucial game for them.

Manchester United Legend Gary Neville Labels Marouane Fellaini An “Idiot”

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has labeled midfielder Marouane Fellaini an idiot” after their draw with Everton.

The former Red Devils doesn’t lay any of the blame for the late substitute giving away penalty on manager Jose Mourinho, and thinks an experienced international should know better.

‘It [his introduction] was purely to deal with the long balls into the box. You can see the sense in it but when he goes on and does such an idiotic thing like that,’ Neville said on Sky Sports.

‘It was really poor from an experienced international. You can’t blame the management, it’s just a poor moment.’

Fellaini, who left Goodison Park for Old Trafford with David Moyes, brought down Idrissa Gueye in the penalty area before Leighton Baines expertly put the penalty away.

“He played here before, he knows the ground, and he knows the crowd, it’s just a poor moment, an individual moment. It’s no reflection on the manager,” Neville continued.

“He made the substitution for the right reasons and he’s been let down by his player.”

Andreas Pereira says Jose Mourinho is in regular contact with him and insists he is ready if Man Utd need him.

Pereira, 20, scored his first goal on loan at La Liga side Granada in a 2-1 win over Sevilla on Saturday and has been a regular for the Spanish club this season, making 13 league appearances.

“We [Pereira and Mourinho] are always in contact and we talk after my games,” Pereira told Goal. “If Manchester United needs me, I am always ready.”

“The experience here in Spain has been very good, even though the club has struggled a bit. But I think we have been improving game by game and the last two games it showed that we are on the right track.

“I came here to play games, get a good experience playing in a top league and then to go back [to United] and to fight for a spot in the squad.”
