Carlos Tevez could be playing his last Argentine “Superclasico” when he leads Boca Juniors against River Plate at El Monumental on Sunday as he ponders a move to China.
Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenua are in talks over a move for Tevez, with their manager Gus Poyet recently confirming their interest.
“I’ve got too much of a muddle in my head to think if in February or March I’m going off to play in China,” Tevez was quoted as saying in Sports daily Ole.
“I don’t just think about leaving, I could also retire. When the year is over I’ll see what’s best.”
Boca were eliminated in this year’s semi-finals of South America’s top club tournament which Tevez won with Boca in 2003.
Tevez admitted he’s struggled to hit top form against River in the past, but hopes the return of Fernando Gago from an Achilles heel injury will boost their chances.
“I’ve always found Clasicos hard to play. I can’t cross the barrier from fan to player,” Tevez said. “That doesn’t happen to me against other teams.
“But we’ve improved a lot, Fernando Gago has done us a lot of good, he’s a different class of player,” he said of the Argentina 2014 World Cup midfielder, who orchestrated successive wins over San Lorenzo and Racing Club following injury to put Boca in second place, two points behind leaders Estudiantes.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Arsenal midfielder, Alex Iwobi was recently interviewed by The Guardian, and he spoke about his meteoric rise to the Arsenal first team, how coming to Nigeria to represent the Super Eagles feels and also how his life has since changed.
Born in Lagos in May 1996, Alex Iwobi moved to England with his parents at the age of four and joined the Arsenal football academy at six while he was still in primary school. Since then, it’s been ups and down but finally he has made a name for himself at the North London club.
Speaking in an interview with the Guardian, Iwobi spoke about how he has been dealing with the attention away from the field, recalling how a fan once followed his car for miles while he was driving away from the Emirates with his mum. “I thought, this fan is going to follow me to my destination. I need to take a detour. It was crazy. I was almost scared. ‘Iwobi! Iwobi!’ For 20 minutes. It was a bit too much.”
Scoring his first champions league goal for the club in the final group match in Switzerland against Basel was yet another check in the career path for Iwobi. League Cup appearance. Check. FA Cup. Check. Premier League. Check. First start. Check. First goal. Check. First Champions League start. Check. Now, Champions League goal. Check.
“When I sit down and actually think about what I have done, to score in the under-19s a year ago and then to score my first Champions League goal for the senior team is mad,” he said.
He also spoke about how training with players like Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez gets.. “Alexis likes to take the mick out of me when I don’t score in training. They are funny.”
“They will tell you what you need to work on but in a jokey kind of way. They do advise me, saying I just need to compose myself, relax and the chances will come. They try to help in the best way they can”. This means a lot for a young boy who came very close to being released by Arsenal in his early teenage years.
“Because I wasn’t as big, fast or strong as everyone else, there were question marks on me and my ability that I wasn’t imposing myself on the game as I should,” Iwobi recalls. “It was upsetting because I was going to school thinking, ‘What can I do to improve?’ I would have extra sessions with my dad or friends. My mum made me do kick-ups in the living room. My sister even tried to play football. Everyone was trying to help me.”
Speaking about the influence of his uncle and Nigerian footballing legend, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, he said “We speak every couple of weeks. He does advise me, not just on the pitch but off it too. Football is a short career so he is telling me to maintain the lifestyle you have to get businesses and properties. He is trying to keep me level-headed and to help me plan for the future after football.”
Alex Iwobi chose to represent Nigeria instead of England and having spent most of his life in his adopted country, he’s been amazed by the reaction whenever he comes to represent the Super Eagles. “Everyone appreciates you. You’re almost like a king!” he says.
“When I arrived at the airport I thought, I’ll just have my earphones in, but everyone was like ‘Iwobi! Iwobi!’ Oh gosh. Hi guys! I didn’t know what to expect. It was just mad. I always go with Kelechi Iheanacho. When we go we get escorted. Because I’m not used to the Nigerian culture as much as they are, they do help me with it. I can’t really speak the language that well. They help me with the fans. The fans are very different there. They don’t ask me for autographs, they ask for boots, money.”
“At my debut we played in a stadium that holds 30,000 and there was 60,000 – I don’t understand how. People were standing on the floodlights, on the scoreboard. I was thinking, ‘What? This isn’t even safe!’ But people there will do anything to watch the match. Sometimes in a Premier League game the fans are a bit quiet but in Nigeria you just hear trumpets, everything. The atmosphere is so different compared to England.”
Liverpool are ready to make a £22.5m offer for Atalanta midfielder Franck Kessie, according to Corriere dello Sport in Italy.
Kessie has enjoyed a pretty remarkable recent run in Italy… He’s notched five goals in the top flight already this term, firing his side to an unexpected sixth spot. He’s also won ten caps for the Ivory Coast, despite still being in his teens – and is naturally touted as the heir to Yaya Toure’s throne in the national side.
Stylistically, Kessie is a physical midfielder who can drive through the middle of the park at speed. He has superb close control and technical ability, but his main asset is his strength – which belies his age.
For £22.5m, Kessie would be a bargain having seen him in action, but in Emre Can and Gini Winaldum, we have two similar midfielders already.
Juventus are also interested in the Ivory Coast international.

The bill seeks to amend the 1999 constitution, to provide for the establishment of the Christian Courts of Appeal in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and of the 36 states.
However, in reaction, the Public Relations Officer of the association, Rev. John Hayab, expressed concerns that at this point in time, the so-called Christian Courts Bill was unnecessary as it would only trigger crisis in the country.
“This Christian Courts Bill cannot help us because we care that is why we are voicing it out.
“This thing is not really what Nigerians want now,” he said.
According to him, “CAN was of the belief that the House should deliberate more on what would bear good fruit for Nigerians and “not what will divide us.”
Hayab reminded the lawmakers to also note that the traditional religion worshippers were entitled to rights of worship as enshrined in the constitution, adding that “what if they wake up tomorrow and demand that there must be court for the ‘pagans?’”
In a bid to tell the world what the current administration is doing, the Federal Government has announced plans to launch a Mobile App for the President Muhammadu Buhari led government before the end of the month.
Speaking on Thursday at a meeting with the Resident Information Officers (RIOs) in his Ministry, Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, said “gone were the days when newspapers were so powerful that their editorials could bring down a government.”
While acknowledging the role of social media in the dissemination of information, he, however, said that the federal government was under-reported because its information handlers were not using the right and current communication channels.
His words: “Government is doing so much, yet people keep saying they do not know because we are not communicating through the right channel.”
“Gone were the days when the newspapers and the television stations were the major means of information dissemination. Newspapers are no longer as powerful as they used to be. Before newspaper editorial can bring down a government. Gone are those day when the Sunday Times sold half a million copies in one day.
“But today the new media is the social media and unless you are there and show a very strong presence, you are not communicating to the world.
“We need technology to inform the world on what we are doing and with the new applications every person in the world will get to know what is happening in the country real time.”
The minister added that an information dissemination App would be launched before the end of the month, and that it would bridge the gap by using the social media to “tell the world what the government is doing”.
Xherdan Shaqiri is happy at Stoke but admits it would be naive for anyone to think he will remain in the Potteries for the remainder of his career.
Xherdan Shaqiri left Inter Milan for the top tier of English football in August of last year but says he is keen to play Champions League football again.
Shaqiri suffered a calf injury early in the season but, on his return, has played a starring role as Stoke moved up the table into ninth spot in the table
“At 25, it would be silly to say that I want to end my career at Stoke,” Shaqiri told the Daily Mirror. “At the moment I feel very comfortable. I have scored three goals as many as in the whole of last season.
“Stoke have a super coach, super team, ninth in the Premier League. But of course I want to play Champions League again in the near future.”

Sunderland are keeping tabs on Deportivo La Coruna striker Florin Andone, according to the Sunderland Echo.
The Romania forward, who featured at Euro 2016, has reportedly attracted attention from a number of clubs following an impressive start to his career at Deportivo.
He has five goals in 14 league appearances.
Adding another striker to the squad will be a priority for David Moyes when the January transfer window opens, with the club heavily reliant on Jermain Defoe and Victor Anichebe.
But with Sunderland £140million in debt, January business is expected to be limited with the club also close to the salary cap for wages.
The 23-year-old has 32 shots on target so far this season – the fourth best registry in LaLiga behind Cristiano Ronaldo (57), Messi (37) and Bale (35); but in terms of effectiveness, he is more precise with a 62.5% success rate compared to Cristiano Ronaldo’s 47.4% and Messi’s 56.8%. Averaging two shots per game, Andone is looking keen to replicate his figures from last season when he hit 21 goals for Córdoba – just one away from ending as the top scorer in the division – the prize going to Elche’s Sergio León on 22.
Scores of successful applicants into the Nigeria Police Force were unable to check their names on the police website on Thursday as the page was not accessible.
Efforts to check the list of successful candidates on the Police Service Commission website (www.psc.gov.ng) was abortive as it simply said, “This account has been suspended. Contact your hosting provider for more information.”
In the same vein, the Nigeria Police Force website, (www.npf.gov.ng) is experiencing the same error as attempts to access the 2016 recruitment page comes up with an error message.

“The website has been having some issues which we rectified, but the latest hitch was on account of the huge number of people trying to access it. Engineers from Galaxy Backbone are working on it, I am sure it would be up any moment from now,” he said.
The names of about 10,000 successful applicants made up of 500 Cadet Assistant Superintendents of Police, 500 Cadet Inspectors, 7,500 Constables and 1,500 specialists are expected to be uploaded on the PSC and police websites.

Balotelli moved to Anfield during Brendan Rodgers’ tenure, But after a disappointing season he was farmed out on loan to AC Milan.Balotelli’s form did not improve at the San Siro though and Jurgen Klopp immediately made him available for transfer when he returned to Liverpool this summer.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday said President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered that the National Identification Number (NIN) be used to authenticate eligible voters in future.
Speaking on behalf of Mr Osinbajo, Ade Ipaye, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, said this while addressing a policy roundtable on identity at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa.
The vice-president added that the president also said NIN should be used to access health insurance, registration of SIM cards, social welfare programmes of the administration and all financial transactions.
He said: “It is the president’s charge that a NIN is used to authenticate eligible voters in the nearest future as well as in the areas of access to health, insurance, registration of SIM cards, access to the social welfare programmes of the administration and for all financial transactions.
“The development of identity programmes in Nigeria will help the nation leverage on its potential to improve security of lives and property, advance service delivery and fight poverty and corruption.
“Achieving full scale national identity management will therefore boost our efforts and better tracking of the movement of people while minimising issues with external border controls and terrorism.
“We have an opportunity here to change and transform our country and everyone has a role to play in the growth and development of our nation through digital identity.’’
Mr. Osinbajo expressed disappointment that the country had separated but similar identifications for its citizens collated by many agencies of government which he described as duplication and waste of resources.
He said it was time to harmonise the data to save the people from the rigours of being captured many times as well as to conserve funds.
Liverpool legend Ian Rush hopes the club keep hold of striker DanielSturridge.
The England international has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield and there have been reports that West Ham are interested in signing him in January.
But Rush told Omnisport: “For me I think it would be wrong if Liverpool got rid of him because for me he’s a great finisher.
“Daniel Sturridge is a team player. When you get there it’s about taking that chance and I’m sure his chance will come.
“For me he’s a major part for Liverpool football club. He’s probably the most gifted finisher we have. He’s a fantastic player, fantastic finisher and I’m sure when he’s fit he’ll make himself available.”
Sturridge has struggled to nail down a role under Jurgen Klopp, with the German instead preferring Roberto Firmino up top.
Sturridge has also failed to register in the Premier League this season, making just five starts as the Reds mount a title challenge.

Barcelona are also tracking Red Bull Salzburg defender Dayotchanculle Upamecano, reports Sport.
The 18-year-old, who has represented France at various youth levels, is regarded as one of the most promising centre backs in Europe.
Salzburg are aware that Barca are monitoring him, while Man City and various unnamed English clubs are interested in him too.
He is closing in on a move to Bundesliga leaders Red Bull Leipzig, but he would move to Barcelona instead if they made an offer for him.
Upamecano plays for France’s youth sides, which is where he aroused Barcelona’s interests, in the U17 youth tournament in Bulgaria which France won. From there they have tracked him in Austria. Red Bull paid 2.2m euros for him from Valenciennes.
The defender stood out for his ability to bring the ball out and his excellent anticipation. Oscar Garcia has also used him in midfield. What’s more, Upamecano has never hidden his passion for Barcelona either
