MMM And The Narrative Of A Nigeria Open To All Swindlers, By Jibrin Ibrahim

Some smart and fast thinking Nigerians invented 419 to swindle the rest of the world and today some Russian 419 experts have swindled three million Nigerians of billions of naira.

Their scheme was devilishly simple; go for the poor, greedy and gullible Nigerians not aware that their company – Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox – MMM has been swindling millions all-over the world for three decades. They looked for and got millions of Nigerians who cannot Google – it takes about 30 seconds on Google to realize MMM is a fraud.

According to Mr. Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager for Anglophone West Africa, search for MMM became the biggest traffic on Google following the Tuesday announcement, but by that time, the Ponzi scheme had collapsed in Nigeria, as it did in Zimbabwe and South Africa recently, and will remerge in another poor country soon where millions more would be swindled. Of course MMM has been actively reassuring its naïve believers that what has happened is a one month suspension of payments that will be revived in January but as everyone knows, they have raked in at least a five billion naira loot and most likely have moved on.

Three days ago, I had posted a story on the social media querying the Nigerian government for allowing so many millions of our compatriots to be swindled by a Ponzi scheme. I received a lot of responses criticising me for unfairly blaming the government.

Imam Mora, for example, responded saying, “Sir, the Nigerian government through various financial agencies has come out repeatedly to warn Nigerians. I do not blame Govt, blame greed. ‬” Mma Odi was more colourful: “Na government send them? They warned them, they no hear, they even said that na God send the MMM to help in this recession Abeg make we move to more urgent matters.”

Okay, I accept Nigerian authorities warned people to stay away from the racket and many refused to listen. All the same, my concern has been that since the authorities knew the scheme was fraudulent, why was it allowed to flourish all over the country for twelve months, leading to the swindling of three million people? I ask this because pyramid or Ponzi schemes always produce the same outcome of people losing their money without exception.

The MMM scheme in Nigeria is based on offering people 30 percent profit after a month of “investing”. They accept that the profit will not be generated by investing the money, the profit comes from the next person to join, so as always happens in such schemes the first persons to enter make their profit, and immediately the number of investors becomes large, the system collapses for the simple reason that the so-called profit is simply money taken up from the next group of persons to come into the system. In other words, it is a system that is guaranteed to fail and the only question is when it will happen.

To camouflage the racket, MMM advertised itself not as a financial system but as “a community of ordinary people selflessly helping each other through mutual aid – you assist with 100 and you will be assisted with 130.” To convince the gullible, they even went on a tirade against bankers on their website: “The modern world is bad. It is inhumane, unfair and unjust. This is the world of money. It is not for people. It is for those who produce this money, for bankers and financiers, government and millionaires.

READ ALSO: Panic Among Participants As MMM Nigeria Freezes All Accounts

And people are mere “pawns” in this game. They just serve them as attendants. Why do bankers work less and earn a hundred times more?” So although MMM claimed that they were not offering financial services, they very clearly presented themselves as an alternative system to the banks. The Russian multibillionaire even defined himself as part of the ordinary people: “The banker has power over money, and is well-connected. And we are ordinary people, having no power or clout.” It’s 419 at its best.

What really infuriated me about MMM was the warning they issued to the Nigerian government that it would be the fault of their anti-MMM propaganda if the system collapses and millions of Nigerians lose their “investment”. This serves the government right because it appears that the regulatory authorities warned people but did not act against MMM simply because they claimed they were not running a financial service. The government cannot or should not be that naïve. MMM was collecting and paying out money so it was obvious they were running financial services, even if they denied that was what they were doing.

Nigeria has had a history of “wonder banks” offering clients unbelievable returns on their money, and in the 1980s and 1990s, the government had banned such banks and closed their operations. Is it because MMM are foreigners that they were allowed to operate freely and even to regularly criticise government?

In November, after warnings from the Central Bank of Nigeria and the NDIC that Nigerians should stay away from MMM, the response of the Ponzi scheme was interesting. They went to the Gwoza and Bama IDP Camps located in Durumi area and the New Kuchingoro in Abuja offering five million naira worth of relief materials to “distressed Nigerians”. Almost all the media in Nigeria covered the “humanitarian gesture” and the criticisms against the scheme were drowned by stories of how they were helping Nigerians, particularly the poor.

The announcement by the MMM that Nigerians would not get their pay-outs to celebrate the Christmas and New Year festivities is a big blow to many and I sympathise with them. The pain that their money is gone for good is sobering. These three million Nigerians need to demand from their government why no one stopped them from foolishly giving out their hard earned money, borrowed money, money from the sale of their cars and other asset to a gang of thieves.

Despite Outrage, NCC Defends Plan To Increase Data Price In Nigeria

Featured Image

Despite the public outrage that greeted the plans by the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) to increase the price of data – and subsequently forced it to rescind its decision – the commission has once again defended its stance on the matter.

The Commission on Friday revealed that the planned increase in data tariff by telecom operators was to create competition in the sector.

READ ALSO: NCC: Senate Denies Media Report On The Increase Of Data Price

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ismail Adedigba, NCC Deputy Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau, said the decision to increase data tariff was to prevent the sector from becoming a monopoly whereby one service provider would be charging consumers arbitrary prices for data services.

READ ALSO: NCC Bows To Pressure, Suspends Data Price Hike [Read Full Statement]

Mr. Adedigba, who spoke on the side line of the commission’s 81st “Consumer Outreach Programme” in Osogbo, noted that competition would afford telecom consumers to make choices for better service.

He said: “We don’t want monopoly, because if we allow anybody to charge any price, some big operators can charge lower price and take all customers to their network at the expense of new entrants.

“Nothing is free or easy because once consumers take the bait of rushing to networks offering cheaper and lower data tariff, competition would be eliminated.

“The effect is that once big operators know that the new entrants have failed, they will now increase their own price, knowing there is no competition.

“The consumers will now have no choice when the tariff is increased, as the new entrants must have been crippled and left the market for big operators.’’

The NCC official added that the competition is better than killing one segment of the telecom market by predatory pricing.

Mr. Adedigba said that the data tariff price increment implementation remained suspended for now, due to the outcry of stakeholders, especially the consumers.

“From all indications, hopefully, by next week Lake Rice will be out, so, we want everything to be in place before it is out.”

Arsene Wenger : Manchester City  Were Good Clients, But We Can Match Them Financially Now

Featured Image

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted that his club are still financially weaker than Manchester City, but are now better positioned to compete with their rivals in the transfer market.

Arsenal lost a number of players to the Citizens over a five-year spell, including the likes of Bacary Sagna, Kolo Toure, Gael Clichy, Samir Nasri and Emmanuel Adebayor.

Arsenal were unable to match City in terms of wages and transfer fees in the years between 2009 and 2014, but Wenger is adamant that the exodus of star players at their peak is now at an end, amid suggestions that both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez could be on their way next summer.

“City were good clients!” he told reporters ahead of this weekend’s meeting between the two teams. “We are [in a stronger position now] because today I feel we can give financial satisfaction and support ambitions and values that can make the players happy at this club.

“Before, perhaps the financial gap was too big a difference to keep our players. We could not compete, we had to sell players. It has reduced but it is still there.”

Arsenal travel to City on Sunday afternoon as both sides attempt to claw back the gap that sets Chelsea apart at the top of the Premier League.

Bacary Sagna (June 2014, free)

Samir Nasri (August 2011, £25million)

Gael Clichy (July 2011, £7million)

Emmanuel Adebayor (July 2009, £25million)

Kolo Toure (July 2009, £15million)

Arsenal are six points behind the leaders after a 2-1 defeat by Everton on Tuesday night, when opposing manager Ronald Koeman accused Wenger of always making defeats about the officials.

‘In my job, people who don’t like losing – believe me – they don’t last a long time. And concerning the referee: yes, I don’t agree with the performance of the referee against us on Tuesday night but I didn’t say a word about it.

‘Of course [the result disappointed me]. We looked in control and I believe we were in control even though we lost the game.

‘In the second half we were completely in control of the game and we lost it on bad luck I believe because it was not a corner and some decisions when you watch the game again were questionable. The response to say, could we have won theme despite that and I have to say yes.

‘That is where we have to be objective and analyse it. we can only master what we an influence ourselves. that is where maybe we have to analyse that well and not look for excuses, but really see where we failed to win the game.’

Merseyside Derby Excites Jurgen Klopp

Featured Image

Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he is relishing his first visit to Goodison Park with Liverpool for Monday night’s “special” Merseyside derby clash against Everton.

Liverpool have hit top form thus season losing just two of their 16 games to date to find themselves second in the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp is not expecting to have any problem motivating his players for one of the standout fixtures in the English football calendar, with the German looking for a repeat of the 4-0 win for his side the last time the two teams met.

“For me it’s pretty special because it’s my first time at Goodison Park,” he told reporters. “I’m really looking forward to it and it is a very important period of the season.

“We watched Everton vs. Arsenal and atmosphere was good. It will be a real battle. Two good teams against each other. It’s all about saying the right things at the right moment to the players.”

Everton’s last Merseyside derby victory came in 2010, with Liverpool winning five since then and seven of the encounters ending all square.

Cesc Fabregas Admits He’s Now Getting Comfortable Under Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 Formation

Featured Image

Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas believes he is now settling into Antonio Conte’s system after a difficult start.

“People forget it’s only the second time in my life, in my whole career, I’ve played this system,” Fabregas told the club’s website.

“My team-mates have played a lot more than me. Against Manchester City [in early December], it was a big test because it was the first game. I’m getting used to it, I feel very comfortable.

“I have a lot of players in front of me so I can pick passes between the lines, they run into space and I have protection behind me. I’m really enjoying it and I think it suits me a lot.”

The 29-year-old’s goal in midweek clinched Chelsea’s 10th consecutive Premier League victory and coupled with recent slip-ups by rivals Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City, the Blues have a six-point lead at the top.

“People say I cannot defend but I recovered the ball, went forward and scored [against Sunderland],” Fabregas added.

“I know what I can do but the problem is I haven’t had minutes, and if you don’t play you can’t show what you can do.

“In football nowadays, people forget very quickly who you are, what you’ve done and what you can do. Hopefully now I can have a run of games to keep my fitness up and show what I can do.

Claudio Ranieri Wants To Get Rid Of “Unhappy” Leicester City Players

Featured Image

Claudio Ranieri is ready to shuffle his Leicester City squad next month and will let unhappy players leave once he has found replacements.

“I don’t like to maintain players who are unhappy,” Ranieri said.

“This is my point of view – afterwards, there is the club. If someone goes, and we have to replace this or that player, we can get rid of him easily.

“But it will cost a lot of money to replace him with someone else. That is the balance we have to achieve.”

“I want to help those players but at the end of the month, they take the money. They are professionals and it’s a business.

“There are rumours and everybody knows very well that if they are happy and want to stay with us and want to fight with us it is okay.

“If someone is not happy then they should come to me and speak and we will see what is best for the club.”

Leonardo Ulloa, Jeffrey Schlupp and Bartosz Kaputska are the most likely candidates to leave the Premier League champions when the window opens next month.

Striker Ulloa, 30, cost £7million from Brighton in 2014, left-sided utility man Schlupp, 23, came through the ranks and Poland midfielder Kaputska, 19, was brought in for £2m last summer.

Chinese Club Hebei China Fortune Ready To Make Alexis Sanchez World’s Best Paid Footballer

Manuel Pellegrini is ready to make Alexis Sanchez the world’s best-paid player should the Arsenal forward leave the Emirates for China.
According to The Sun, Pellegrini’s new club Hebei China Fortune are ready to offer Sanchez £500,000-a-week.

As mentioned earlier today, several national newspapers are reporting Arsenal offered Sanchez £180,000-a-week to extend his contract recently.

Talking are “ongoing” but the Chilean reportedly wants £250,000-a-week.

Pellegrini already has former Arsenal star Gervinho, 29, and Argentine Ezequiel Lavezzi in his Chinese Super League squad.

Lavezzi, 31, is on an eye-watering £493,000 every week.

Pellegrini added: “Step by step Alexis has led a career with a lot of intelligence.

“He started in South America, always playing for big clubs.

“After that he played in Italy, Spain and now in the Premier League, which is the most powerful in the world.

“Alexis has always done things the right way. Chinese football is growing every day and the interest in going there is increasing all the time.

30 Names Of Noise Makers In Nigeria: Those Who Made The Headlines In 2016 (1)

25. Linda Ikeji:

Linda IkejiLinda Ikeji is not just an intrepid trailblazer in the blogging community but a groundbreaking entrepreneur whose appetite to attain the very summit of enterprising distinction holds no boundary.

Wizkid Attacks Linda Ikeji On Instagram

Following her indefatigable and unflinching hanker to only think outside the box towards creativity; Miss Ikeji – the owner of LindaIkejisBlog – has been faced with the GOOD, BAD and then the UGLY sides of online reportage.

Linda Ikeji Fires Shots After Shots In Response To Wizkid Calling Her A B*Tch?

Earlier this year, an old vendetta was triggered between Wizkid and her which later developed into a full-blown, heated war of words.

Linda Ikeji Subtly Claps Back At Wizkid

Linda had on Instagram posted that the Landlady of the Lekki home, which Wizkid claimed to have purchased, gave him a notice to quit, arguing further that the Porsche bought by the ‘Ojuelegba’ crooner was on hire purchase. Not still satisfied, she said he was more than 25 years, an age he claimed to be.

Nothing Like Women Solidarity! Toni Payne Urges Every Star Linda Ikeji Has Defamed To Sue Her

The upshot of the vocal war left the social media community buzzing in the gust of the traded vituperation with Nigerians revelling in the nastiness.

Months later, in the wake of the story involving Mayowa Ahmed, Linda Ikeji was wrongly thrown under the bus for saying that the #SaveMayowa campaign was a scam – an insinuation that was later confirmed that she was telling the truth.

What actually makes this entrepreneurial blogger a quintessence of unmatched disposition is her flamboyant insouciance towards the strokes of criticism.

24. Police Recruitment:

Chinese Man Arrested After Paying N1.4m For JujuIn an attempt to strengthen and re-energise the Nigerian Police Force to tackle more security challenges facing the country, the President Muhammadu Buhari led government directed the recruitment of 10,000 qualified Nigerians into the Force.

Police Recruitment: 796,152 Nigerians Apply For 10,000 Slots

The recruitment exercise, which commenced in April and was greeted with a ‘vote of confidence’ by many – particularly unemployed graduates – saw the recruitment portal crashing with overwhelming views, as over a million Nigerians ‘impatiently’ divulged their willingness for a job of just 10,000 slots.

While the demand for the job overwhelmingly exceeded the expectation, reports then started to generate online that the recruitment exercise has been suspended with the Senate Police Committee citing irregularities and lopsidedness.

Trouble started when the Police Service Commission (PSC) decided to jettison the ‘modus operandi’ and base the exercise on equal number per state – citing orders from above – when in fact it should be based on local government areas and principle of equality that will witness the recruitment of nine candidates from each LGA as against the earlier plan of equality per state.

After much deliberation, the PSC and Senate resolved to allow the status quo to prevail and only recently, the names of successful applicants were published on the recruitment portal of the Nigerian Police Force.

23. Nnamdi Kanu:

However, things went ugly, after the Federal Government apprehended the IPOB leader and subsequently slammed an 11-count charge bothering on treasonable felony and alleged involvement in acts of terrorism alongside three other pro-Biafra agitators, Mr. Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi.

The Heart And Soul Of Nnamdi Kanu – Fani-Kayode

His continuous detention has stirred outrage in the social media community with several supporters of Biafra protesting on the streets that he be released even declaring September 23, as a day to sit at home and press home their demands to the government.

22. Fulani Herdsmen:

Fulani Massacre AgatuFulani herdsmen are nomadic herders, whose history can be traced to the Futa Jalon mountains of West Africa, and whose primary occupation is raising livestock.

Scores Dead As Fulani Herdsmen Invade Enugu Communities

Though a very conservative tribe, a section of these herdsmen have transmuted to vicious marauders, whose sole aim is to kill and wreck monumental havoc all in an attempt to fend and feed their cattle in a showdown of land resource based conflicts with farmers in mostly north-eastern Nigeria.

Anxiety As Over 500 Fulani Herdsmen Plot To Invade Enugu Community

Enugu state played host to their cruel hostilities as scores of residents were killed with houses, churches and vehicles set ablaze. Even soulless animals were not spared during their numerous and malevolent raids and ambushes on towns and communities which they have viewed as soft targets.

Images of grisly proportion also flooded the internet on the mayhem wrecked by the Fulani herdsmen on the citizenry of the Riverine Abugbe community of Agatu, Benue state.

81 Persons Killed By Herdsmen In Benue State

Residents of Benue, Adamawa, Zamfara, Kaduna and so many other states have also been victims of their rampaging carnage with an estimate of thousands killed in the process with the government doing apparently less to stem the tides of their nefarious acts.

Panic and outrage were aroused in the country’s blogosphere earlier this year as some incorrigible herdsmen were spotted on the Ajegunle axis causing nuisance with their cattle and further impeding traffic flow.

21. Ayodele Fayose:

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti StateGovernor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state is the definitive embodiment of a forthright controversialist and consequentialist, and one of the loudest mouths in the ‘fading’ opposition political party.

Fondly called Oshokomole, Ekun-Oko Ekiti, Jogunomi 1 of Ekiti by residents of the state, a quick peek at the appellation, which means “the only man capable of pinning down all political rivals that come in form of antagonists,” lends testament to the fact that Fayose is not a man that will be wavered or cowered by the consequence of his actions, even to a threat of imprisonment in a penitentiary.

In March, while the rest of Nigeria continued to anticipate the return of the school girls, who were kidnapped by terror group Boko Haram, Fayose insisted that the Chibok kidnappings were nothing more than a ruse and a political strategy.

Ayo Fayose Claims No Chibok Girls Are Missing

The spotlight also kept its beam on him earlier this year as he embarked on a strike action in a ‘satirical’ bid to show solidarity for the civil servants in the state, who had earlier embarked on an industrial action due to five months of non-payment of salaries.

Aisha Buhari Drags Ayo Fayose To Court

Well known to have a sour relationship with President Buhari, Fayose extended his inimical provocation to the wife of the president, Aisha Buhari, as he accused her of being named in a U.S. court document, alleged to have been involved in a bribery case involving a convicted former U.S. lawmaker, Williams Jefferson.

Although Aisha Buhari denied the allegations and even threatened a lawsuit, Fayose still maintained that she was the one indicted in the corruption case.

Mason Holgate, Leighton Baines And Gareth Barry All Sign New Contracts At Everton

Featured Image

Everton have announced new contracts for Leighton Baines, Gareth Barry and Mason Holgate.

Barry, 35, has extended his deal until 2018, while Baines, 32, has agreed a new contract keeping him at Everton until 2019.

Holgate, who made his Premier League debut this season, is now under contract through to 2021.

“Players like Leighton, Phil Jagielka and Gareth Barry are leaders in our dressing room and on the pitch,” manager Ronald Koeman said. “For younger players, they are a little bit like teachers.”

On Holgate, he added: “Mason is one of the big talents at the club. Of course, he started playing this season and did a great job He can play out of different positions in the team defensively. He was really comfortable when he got his chance in the team.”

Baines was in the final year of his previous contract – signed after Everton had resisted approaches from Manchester United – and Koeman was keen to keep such an experienced player at the club.

The former Wigan Athletic defender has been hindered by injury in recent seasons, notably a serious ankle problem, but remains Everton’s first-choice left-back and recently regained his place from Bryan Oviedo.

Baines said: “The majority of my career I’ve spent here at Everton and it’s something that I hope will continue even beyond these next few years. I hope I’m always affiliated with Everton. It’s a huge honour for me to play for the club for as long as I have and I’m very proud to have been here for as long as I have been.

“I’m very lucky as well. You work hard, you look after yourself and you always try to do the right things and the reward for me has been to spend such a long time at such a great club.”

Report : Alexis Sanchez House Seized By Spanish Authorities

Featured Image

Alexis Sanchez has had his Spanish home seized by government authorities investigating tax evasion.

The Gunners striker has been caught up in the scandal in Spain over failing to pay the correct level of taxes during his time with Barcelona.

Cristiano Ronaldo is also facing investigation over allegations he failed to pay the correct amount of taxes while at Real Madrid.

The claims against Sanchez date back to his time in Spain during 2011-2013, before his move to the Emirates Stadium.

He is accused of failing to pay tax on image rights by ‘simulating’ the transfer of these rights to a Maltese shell company called Numidia.

Sanchez is understood to own a 99 per cent stake in Numidia – and tax officials in Spain believe he owes them £3.11million in unpaid contributions.

And Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo say it is chasing this debt that has seen the house being seized.

I Former Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has told ADN Radio in Chile that had wanted to sign Alexis Sanchez in 2014 but could not do so due to financial fair play (FFP).

Alexis Sanchez signed for the Gunners from Barcelona in the summer of 2014 for £35m

“He was one of the best in the world and he showed it every day,” Pellegrini told Chilean radio station ADN.

“He was a major player we wanted to take to City.

“We could not take him before he signed for Arsenal, it was because the club was punished for Financial Fair Play. I did not have the space in the squad for him.

Sanchez’s current deal at Arsenal will run down after the end of the next season. With over 18 months left on his contract, the former Barcelona forward is yet to commit his future to the Gunners.

Earlier reports suggested Guardiola personally called Sanchez to join him at City as the pair have worked together at Barcelona. However, the Catalan coach rubbished the suggestions, while Chelsea manager Antonio Conte was coy when asked about the reports linking the South American to the Blues.

Derby County Holding Stoke City To Ransom Over Lee Grant’s Transfer Fee

Featured Image

Mark Hughes says Stoke will not be held to ransom as they attempt to secure a deal for on-loan goalkeeper Lee Grant.

“We would like to do something,” Hughes said. “At the moment, Derby want a bit too much money!

“There needs to be a common ground. There’s a value on Lee, who’s done fantastic for us – but we’re not going to be held to ransom.

“At the moment we’re a little bit far apart. If that continues we’ll have to look at other options.”

Grant’s form for the Potteries side has been good. Hughes was impressed with Grant again during Stoke’s goalless draw with Southampton on Tuesday night, in which he brilliantly backed up a Stoke side reduced to 10 men after Marko Arnautovic’s 23rd minute dismissal for serious foul play.

Hughes remains unsure when England international Butland will return but was clear that he wants a strong group of goalkeepers at the bet365 Stadium.

He said: “If you look back at the goalkeeping group, even before my time, it has always been really strong here.

“We want that group to get back to those levels as well, so the likes of Jack, Shay, Lee and Jakob (Haugaard), who has been played in the first team.

“It gets that strength in the goalkeeping group back to the level it was maybe a couple of years back.”

Manchester United Fear Zlatan Ibrahimovic Could Quit Club And LA Galaxy Next Season

Featured Image

The Sun says Ibrahimovic could leave Manchester United for MLS this summer, with LA Galaxy keen.

The Swede has a one-year deal at United with the option of a further year, but will reportedly wait until the end of the season before making his decision.

For his part, Jose Mourinho expects Ibrahimovic to trigger his extension.

But Ibrahimovic, who has 14 goals in 20 starts, will only stay if he believes he can influence a United title push.

He does not want to be seen as a big-name star just taking his wages and playing a bit- part role or not being able to match his own high standards in one of Europe’s top divisions.

Mourinho, of course, will be keen to keep the striker and suggested earlier this season that the Swede will stay at Old Trafford
