Movie Review: Brother Jekwu

Featured Image

Brother Jekwu, the new film starring Mike Ezuruonye as a bumbling village idiot who leaves his hometown in search of greener pastures in faraway- wait for it,- Kenya hopes to profit from the wave of success that has trailed films like Osuofia in London in the past and is currently reflecting in the phenomenal commercial response to the two Akpos films (30 Days in Atlanta, A Trip to Jamaica) released by comedian AY Makun.

Fish out of water comedies have always been warmly received by Nollywood audiences because they mine laughs from real time situations that have their bases rooted in the culture, both of the local audience and with the visiting environment where our heroes land. Thus smart filmmakers only need to create a relatable character be it Jenifa, Akpos or Osuofia, put them in comedic situations that jack every cliché relating to the subject matter, and wait for the money to roll in.

Mike Ezuruonye, the Nollywood working actor has a name and a face that is instantly recognisable but it takes more than that to sell tickets. For his first project as star, writer and producer, he wants to mitigate losses as much as possible and goes for the same tried and true formula that has made millions for the likes of AY, Mercy Aigbe and Kingsley Ogoro. This move is more strategic than inspirational and it wouldn’t be a problem at all if Brother Jekwu, the character and film were genuinely interesting.

Brother Jekwu opens with the title character disrupting his younger sister’s romance with a potential suitor. The film sets viewers up with a rewind-for-a-moment-let-us-trace-how-we got-here impression but it quickly loses the thread and jumps on another where brother Jekwu, desperate to find something doing, hooks up with Ego (Angela Okorie), a cousin of his who returns to the village with a fairly used jeep and plenty of money to throw around.

It does not take a discerning gaze to guess that the source of cousin Ego’s new found wealth is questionable, especially when she engages in telephone conversation with a shifty figure played most incredibly by a bad Kenyan actor. But Jekwu isn’t the smartest bulb in the room and agrees to get on the next flight with Ego. Destination: Kenya for a series of misadventures that form the bulk of the film’s running time.

Directed by Charles Uwagbai, working from a screenplay by Ezuruonye himself, Brother Jekwu is not better than it has a right to be. What you see (from the posters and trailer) is what you get and this isn’t saying much. Ezuruonye seems to have a lot of fun playing Jekwu, complete with Igbo accent and terrible grammar but for the most part, he is the only one having all the fun.

A lot of the humour is dead on arrival and fails to find life on screen. Even the addition of comedian like Funnybone and Klint da Drunk in glorified cameos fail to elicit beyond the faintest crack of a smile. The genuine comedic moments have more to do with the expression of physical stunts than whatever is coming out of the characters’ mouths.

On getting to Kenya, Jekwu wastes no time in mixing up with a crime syndicate, headed by a sociopathic, trigger happy overlord, Mrs Boss (Juliet Ochieng) and he is soon underground, jumping from one disastrous scenario to the other.

Brother Jekwu is not very well made. Some shots, especially of the Kenyan landscape are nice to look at but a particular taxi interior scene involving Ezuruonye and Funnybone is a startling example of how not to apply close ups and highlight a weakness with technical skill.

Apart from Ezuruonye who commits to the material from start to finish and Okorie, the acting, especially from the Kenyan side of things is sub-par, almost as if Ezuruonye took particular care to find the most incompetent actors in the country.

The film’s politics are insensitive too as Brother Jekwu displays some open discrimination against transsexual and mentally ill persons, all in the name of finding gross out, reliable humour.

Brother Jekwu is basically old school Asaba style film making writ large on the big screen. It has its audience in mind and does not apologise for its choices. Drop common sense, any expectation of detailed plotting or even storytelling at the box office stands and you may well enjoy the insane, twisted, incoherent world that is invoked on screen.

The Many Goofs Of The Red Beret Wearing Dalung

The Many Goofs Of The Red Beret Wearing Dalung – Monica Iheakam

Barrister Solomon Dalong was born on September 26, 1964 in the town of Sabon Gida, Langtang South Local Council in Plateau State.

This piece was written by Monica Iheakam. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

He had his primary education at LEA Primary School Sabon Gida from 1971 to 1977. He then proceeded to Government College Keffi, currently in Nassarawa State, for his secondary school education before joining the Nigerian Prisons Service where he rose to the rank of Assistant Inspector of Prisons.

Dalung studied law at the University of Jos, graduating in 1999 before proceeding to the Nigerian Law School, Bwari, in Abuja, and graduated in 2000. He was called to the Bar in 2001.

In 2004, he took up an appointment with the Faculty of Law in the University of Jos as a lecturer. He made an attempt at representing Langtang North and South at the National Assembly but lost.

Was Dalung the kind of sports Minister Nigerians wanted?

Solomon Dalung, is by far Nigeria’s most unpopular Minister of Sports so far. Prior to his appointment in November 2015, Dalung had no clear cut experience in the sporting world  and has never held any high profile administrative position in sports.

Many are bewildered on how Nigeria with all her abundant human resources bustling with brilliance in virtually all spheres of human endeavor both home and abroad ended up with a Dalung as Sports Minister?

The minister whose dressing of Kahki and red cap is taken after Che Guevera, a revolutionist who dedicated his life to the struggle of the common people and Thomas Sankara, has continued to be in the news and most times trending for the wrong reasons.

From the day the lawyer and former lecturer, was appointed Sports Minister, there were raised eyebrows. His mismanagement of the Sports Ministry has manifested in many forms.

He came under heavy criticism by sports loving Nigerians following the poor performance of the country’s contingents to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

Nigerian athletes had to participate in the opening ceremonies wearing track suits rather than the special attires displaying our cultural elegance.

Team Nigeria Captain, Mikel Obi, could not be part of the opening ceremony because of Nigeria’s shoddy arrangement. Dalung also created confusion in the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) by needlessly reawakening the rivalry between contenders for its leadership.

His many embarrassing quotes

On Super Falcons bonus protest:

Barely 24 hours after the Federal Government blamed recession for its inability to pay match bonuses of the victorious Super Falcons at the just concluded African Women Championship, the Sports Minister Solomon Dalung said they were never expected to win the trophy.

Although the Super Falcons went into the tournament as defending champions and favourites, Dalung claimed that their triumph in Cameroon somehow came as a surprise and the authorities were not prepared for it.

“Don’t forget that nobody even knew the team would emerge victorious, if we were confident they will emerge victorious, all the Federation would have done is to plan for process of participation and entitlement.” Dalung told State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

On the World Cup:

For a competition that is perhaps rivaled only by the Olympic Games, our number one sports man, insists that it amounts to a sheer waste of time to be a part of this.

Having participated in the World Cup five times and averaging the 16th place as best performance, Dalung insists that the nation would be better off participating in other sporting events.

“That competition stinks of corruption; Nigeria is too poor to waste money on it.” “The cup that we can win is the African Cup of Nations. There is nothing again that will take us to another man’s balcony in the name of the World Cup. We already have the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. For these, we can attend such meets. But I am opposed to the World Cup. We don’t agree to it. Conspiracy in the World Cup is too much.”

Paralympics:

At the wake of Nigerian athletes’ outstanding performance at the Paralympics, the sports minister, speaking with Brila FM, infuriated sports lovers by saying that, “the disabled athletes have shown that all you need is a winning mentality and not too much preparation, they trained under the same condition with their able bodied counterparts but they are winning medals now.”

Dream Team and “United States of Nigeria”

While fielding questions from newsmen about the Dream Team’s inability to fly out to Rio for the Olympic Games, Dalung got many people furious when he referred to Nigeria as the ‘United States of Nigeria.’

He said, “Our U-23 team is suffering in the United States of Nigeria.”

And as the county’s U-23 football team was on a tour of the United States, seeking to replicate the success of the 1996 gold-medal-winning team, Dalung left many hanging when he said he was unaware of the team’s tour of the States. In his words, “The issue of our U23 National team suffering in the United States of America is news to me. In fact I am hearing it from you (the media) for the first time.”

Adding further salt to the injury, he questioned the team’s stay in Obama’s land, saying that they were not sent there. His words were: “They (Nigeria U23) didn’t tell us what they were there for and who took them there. It doesn’t mean that if somebody goes to the market and has problem then you will come and ask the ministry. The question is who took them there? And what are they there for?

“Because they are U23 national team, they went to the US and they are having problems, does that become our business? When they were traveling to the US, from your information, were you told that we were informed? Before you (the media) asked us to account for something you should know whether we are aware of it.”

Unconcerned about the threat to throw the Olympic Eagles out of their hostel in Atlanta, he said: “If they are throwing them out of the hotel then they should meet who took them there.

“They were supposed to be given a letter approving they are travelling from the minister’s office. Then if they ask me, I will tell you that I approved it and this is the reason.”

As criticism piled up against the minister on the poor state of Nigeria’s Dream Team camp and players’ welfare, he was quoted in a press statement by the media assistant, Nneka Anibeze, as asking John Mikel Obi (who later denied it) to be in charge of the team as a form of punishment to their coach, Samson Siasia.

“There is no doubt that the ministry was not considered while plans were being made for the Olympic football team,” read the statement. Continuing, the release said: “Nevertheless, we shall intervene to remedy the situation.

I have appealed to the captain to assume control of the team and restore sanity. For officials who decided to violate the code of their profession and take to media rampage(sic) to secure cheap blackmail, their conduct will definitely be measured with existing rules.”

Appointment Gernot Rohr:

Again, Solomon Dalung embarrassed us and himself in the eyes of the world.

Nigeria Football Federation appointed German coach, Gernot Rohr, and our honourable minister claimed that he was not aware of the appointment. It is unimaginable how a football federation would take such step without the consent of the sport minister.

“I am not aware we have a new coach”

His Facebook visit to

Gongola State

On April 6, 2016 Solomon Dalung, goofed big time when he posted pictures from a football match he attended at an IDP camp. In his Facebook post, he referred to the state he went to as ‘Gongola State’. Which was created in 1976 and ceased to exist in August 1991 when Taraba and Adamawa States were created from it.

“I attended a football match between Internally Displaced Persons IDPs of Gongola State and footballers from the Diplomatic Community yesterday to mark the United Nations International Day of Sports for Peace and Development….”

After his followers called him out for the mistake, he quickly changed his caption to ‘old Gongola State’. But it was too late. The original screenshot had already gone viral on social media.

Use The Door!!! : West Ham Show Simone Zaza The Way Out

Featured Image

West Ham have told Simone Zaza he can leave the club in January.

Simone Zaza joined the club on loan from Juventus in August and West Ham have decided not to take up the option of making the move permanent.

West Ham paid £5m to take Simone Zaza on loan from the Serie A champions Juventus, with the deal automatically becoming a long-term one, at a cost of a further £20m, if he made a set number of Premier League appearances for the club this season. Having made 11 in all competitions and failed to score, the London club look set to cut their losses.

Juvenews reported that Morabito said: “Zaza will definitely go back to Juve, because West Ham do not want to keep him. He could well stay in Turin, given that Juventus might need another striker. If not, there are plenty of other options.”

Zaza’s agent says other clubs – including Valencia – are interested in signing him.

Slaven Bilic Not Intrested In Swapping Dimitri Payet For Anthony Martial

Featured Image

Slaven Bilic fully expects Dimitri Payet to stay at West Ham and has dismissed speculation over a potential swap deal with Manchester United for Anthony Martial.

“I can’t see any truth in that. Regarding Payet, not regarding Martial. He is a good player, a great player. But I don’t see this happening,” Bilic said.

“Do I expect Payet to stay? Of course. Great players are always the centre of interest. Payet is one of the best in the world and they are always the ones who are linked with the big clubs.

“But I hope, and I expect, he will stay with us.”

While speculation about Payet’s future is likely to be a continuing theme of next month’s transfer window, West Ham have tied down another talent in the shape of Reece Oxford. The defender was a target for Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United but marked his 18th birthday by signing a four-and-a-half-year contract at the London Stadium.

“It is great news for us,” Bilic said. “It is great news to sign one of the best talents, for him to stay with us for the long term, and it is a great thing for him as well. This is the best club for him to continue his development.”

Pep Guardiola Insists Claudio Bravo Won’t Be Returning To Barcelona

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola has dismissed claims goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is unhappy at Manchester City.

Some reports in the Spanish media in midweek suggested the 33-year-old had struggled to settle since his £15.4m move to the Etihad Stadium from Barcelona in August.

Claudio Bravo was sent off on his return to the Nou Camp in the Champions League in October, and has kept just two clean sheets in his last 14 games.

A report in Spain this week suggested that the keeper has told his team-mates that he wants to rejoin Barcelona, even though that would mean him being back up to Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

However, Guardiola said: “I didn’t read that. Sometimes, when you [journalists] come here, Simon [Heggie, City’s head of media relations] will make a briefing as to what you are going to ask me. But he didn’t speak about that issue.

“I don’t read too much of newspapers, of the Twitters and Instagrams and Facebooks. I spoke with Bravo in the last days, and with his wife as well. I saw him here. Their little daughter as well, but I couldn’t speak with her because she is just one year old. I couldn’t speak with her. And he told me he is so happy.”

“Valencia Couldn’t Sign Simone Zaza After Failed Andre Gomes Move To Real Madrid” – Sporting Director

Featured Image

Valencia tried to sign West Ham loanee Simone Zaza but ruled out a deal for the Italian after failing to sell Andre Gomes to Real Madrid and Juventus, according to the club’s sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch.

Gomes, the Portugal international, eventually moved to Barcelona, but Pitarch admits that the La Liga champions’ deadly rivals Real Madrid also wanted the midfielder.

Zaza, meanwhile, eventually joined West Ham on loan, although the Hammers could cut the deal short in January as he has disappointed in the Premier League.

When asked about Valencia’s interest in Italy striker Zaza, Garcia Pitarch told Marca: “This summer we tried to sign him (Zaza) before the frustrated sale of Andre [Gomes] to Real Madrid, an operation with Juventus that included Zaza and Hernanes.

“Andre preferred to rule out Juve and it (the deal for Zaza and Hernanes) was ruled out before it was an expensive signing. But we like Zaza and he is one of our objectives.”

West Ham Want Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi On Loan

Featured Image

West Ham are considering a loan move for Chelsea back-up striker Michy Batshuayi, according to The Sun.

The Belgian international, a £33m summer signing from Marseille, has barely featured under Antonio Conte.

He was linked with the Hammers before joining Chelsea, and with Simone Zaza expected to return to Juventus in January, Batshuayi is back on Slaven Bilic’s radar.

Slaven Bilic’s side have also been linked with big names like Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge, though it seems increasingly likely that he will be remaining at Anfield.

Bashuayi, 23, could be a decent alternative after a prolific record during his time in Ligue 1, and with three goals for Chelsea this season despite limited first-team chances.

NNN Nigeria: Another Ponzi Scheme Debuts After MMM “Crashed”

Barely days after the suspension of financial activities on controversial money doubling scheme, Mavrodi Mundial Moneybox (MMM), saw the rise of another Ponzi scheme, NNN Nigeria.

The new scheme, which is modelled after MMM Nigeria, promises more lucrative percentage on investment compared to its sister Ponzi scheme – while MMM promised 30% on investment, NNN is promising 35%.

NNN Nigeria: Another Ponzi Scheme Debuts After MMM “Crashed”

A statement on its website read:

“NNN is a community of ordinary people, selflessly helping each other, a kind of mutual aid. This is the first sprout of something new in modern soulless and ruthless world of greed and hard cash.”

“The goal here is not the money. The goal is to ACQUIRE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN.”

It continued: “NNN is owned by the participants, its a community by the people and for the people. A team of freedom lovers in America headed by an influential Yoruba man came up with a logic ad tested it offline in New York City in 2014. In September 2015, these men held a conference in VI Lagos where they introduced NNN logic. It was an improved MMM system- there will be no moratorium and the system will be automated.”

It is quite uncertain and impossible to verify the intentions and authenticity of this Ponzi scheme, but what remains clear is that the Federal Government of Nigeria is currently not in any mood to accommodate the activities of wonder banks in the country, as it has threatened to wield the big stick.

It would be recalled, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had warned Nigerians against participating in any scheme, which they described as “Ponzi” scheme.

The Economic and Financial Commission (EFCC), also admonished Nigerians to “protect” themselves and “not patronise wonder banks.”

The anti graft agency had said:

“If it looks or sounds too good to be true, it almost always is.

“Respect your hard work and be content. Please stay away from quick return schemes. Please.”
