Woman Beats 10-Year-Old Maid To Death In Lagos

Featured Image

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a middle-aged woman, Linda Alapa, for allegedly beating her 10-year-old housemaid, Joy Mbafan, to death within the suburb of Bolanle Oduniyi Street, Okegbegun, in the Ikorodu area of the state.

The suspect, it was learnt, was beating the victim in the earlier hours of last Monday (3:00am) when she passed out and died afterwards.

The Punch gathered that at the Ikorodu General Hospital morgue where she had gone to deposit Mbafan’s corpse, a doctor on duty was said to have noticed marks of violence on the body and alerted the police at the Sagamu Road Division.

Speaking on the incident after interrogation, a police source said Alapa admitted to beating the girl, even as the source said that she would be charged with murder.

The police source said: “She wanted to absolve herself of the death of the victim, but for the doctor on duty who raised the alarm after a close examination and she was arrested. There are marks of violence on the body of the deceased and she did not deny beating her.”

Also lending voice on the matter, a neighbour of the suspect said Alapa did not only beat the girl but also starved her of food.

She said: “Around 3am on the day the girl died, I heard her crying as the woman (Alapa) flogged her. I woke up my husband to intervene. He said he was tired of the woman’s insults. After a while, she stopped crying.

“It was when I came back from work that afternoon that I saw a crowd on our premises in tears. They said Joy (Mbafan) was dead. The woman’s husband was not at home that day. It was the landlord that told him about the incident on the telephone.”

The landlord and Alapa’s husband were not around when our correspondent visited the residence on Wednesday. The Alapas’ apartment was locked.

When contacted, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, in a text message, said, “I confirm the case. The suspect is under investigation while the corpse has been deposited in a morgue for autopsy.”

Workers Shut Secretariat Over 8-Month Unpaid Salaries In Taraba

Featured Image

Workers in the employment of Taraba State Government under the auspices of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, JPSNC, on Thursday shut down the state secretariat in Jalingo to protest the non-payment of their salaries.

Addressing the workers, Peter Gambo, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, said the state government had continued to be insensitive to the plights of the workers.

Mr. Gambo said that they were protesting against other irregularities in the payment of salaries of workers and pensions of retirees in the state.

He said that local government workers and teachers had not been paid for eight months, pointing out that they had been subjected to untold hardship.

The chairman listed such irregularities as illegal deductions from salaries, and subjection of workers to meaningless screenings and futile verifications by the government.

Mr. Gambo also alleged that the union dues were deducted indiscriminately without being remitted to the respective accounts of the unions and that government had given no explanations for this.

“Government has shown that the welfare of workers in the state is not its priority.

“Workers have been subjected to all kinds of belittling treatments in the name of screening and verifications that have not yielded any fruits apart from subjecting them to extreme hardships.

“The consultant has proven to be very incompetent in handling payment of salaries while the bank handling payment has clearly shown that it is confused. All these must stop now”, he said.

The state Head of Service, Samuel Angyu, addressing the protesters said that the state government was aware of the workers’ complaints and was already taking steps to address them.

Mr. Angyu appealed to the workers to end the protest and make way for “peaceful and civilized discussions on the way forward.”

The protesters carried placards that read: “One year of impunity and insensitivity must stop’’, “salary is a right not a privilege”, “Starter Up must go” and “pensioners have right to a dignified living.”

Footballers under the state’s employ, also besieged the Government House on Monday, to demand the payment of their 21 months’ salaries.

The naira is trading on the parallel market some 40 per cent lower than the official rate against the dollar as low global crude prices have dried up vital oil revenues and pushed Africa’s largest economy into recession.

As a result of this, the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, said the CBN has been mandated to scrap the damaging market.

The Apex Bank “has been directed to do this and CBN has promised to do something by putting a system in place to eliminate the black market because it’s damaging the economy”, she told a conference.

The President of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe has hailed the newly proposed abolition of the parallel market.

“The scrapping of multiple markets outside the purview of the CBN will be a welcome development.

“The existence of multiple rates is highly unacceptable,’’ Gwadabe said.

Wade Feels Bulls Putting Too Much Pressure On Butler

Featured Image

Chicago Bulls star, Dwayne Wade believes the team is putting a lot of pressure on his fellow teammate, Jimmy Butler in the final quarter of games.

Wade spoke after the 107-97 loss to Washington Wizards on Wednesday, Butler shot 6-of-20 from the field and Wade believes the Bulls must be more versatile offensively in the final quarter.

“That’s putting a lot of pressure on Jimmy,” Wade said. “Let’s just call it what it is. We put a lot of pressure on Jimmy in the fourth quarter to make a lot of plays because we’re running just one action, so we got to get more action, more body movement. And it’s got to come from us as players, too. Obviously, some of it’s playcalling as well. Some of it’s we got to get out of the way, we got to move. We got to keep them honest. We’re asking the young guy to make every shot he takes with bodies in front of him, step-backs and all these things. That’s not necessarily the easiest thing to do.”

Overall, the Bulls hit just 7-for-24 over the final 12 minutes against the Wizards, who handed Chicago its seventh defeat in 10 games.

“I think so,” Wade said when asked if the team’s fourth-quarter offense is too predictable. “I think ideally we want to get to a point where we just want to move bodies, man. … Offensively, we got to be able to move bodies. It doesn’t matter if a guy knows who it’s going to. If the paint is packed because you’re running one action, then it’s going to be tough. A guy’s got to make an unbelievable shot.”

Conte To Work Hard On Finding Replacement For Kante And Costa

Featured Image

Chelsea will be without Diego Costa and N’golo Kante when they play Bournemouth and manager, Antonio Conte knows he must work hard in replacing them.

Costa and Kante were both handed their fifth booking of the campaign in the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, with Costa heading home his 13th goal of the season to lead the league’s goalscorers.

Both men have been mainstays of the Blues’ 11-match winning run that has established a six-point advantage over Liverpool at the summit and their absence leaves Conte with much to ponder.

“For sure, they are two important players for us, this is clear,” he told a pre-match news conference.

“But we are working very well this week to try to find the solution to play good football and continue to win and take the three points

“We know that against Bournemouth it won’t be easy because it is a very good team with great organisation.

“I have four days to evaluate the situation and to try to find the best solution for the team.”

Conte granted his players three days off this week, with Costa and Kante earning an additional 24 hours of recuperation, and the former Italy boss is keen to see some of his squad players take the chance to show their worth.

“I think it is important, this test to see the situation in our squad,” he said. “Also to give the possibility of play to some players who, until now, are not playing a lot, or to find some other solution.

“What my eyes see in this week are very important.

Rummenigge To Muller: Improve Your Game

Featured Image

Thomas Muller has had a disappointing first half to the season and Bayern Munich chairman, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has asked the forward to improve his game.

The forward has only scored once in 13 appearances for Bayern Munich, and was on the bench for the full 90 minutes in the 3-0 win over RB Leipzig.

The Germany international was frustrated on the sidelines and Rummenigge hopes he can use that to better his game when the second half of the season starts.

“You need 16, 17 or 18 players these days. We have a lot of players of the highest quality,” Rummenigge told AZ.

“That means every now and then two or three players will not be in the team and might be unhappy.

“That should be a motivation for the players to perhaps do better in certain areas in 2017. That is the case with Muller.”

Firmino: I Plan To Stay At Liverpool A Long Time

Featured Image

Brazil international and Liverpool forward, Roberto Firmino fancies the Premier League so much, he plans to stay a long while with Liverpool.

Firmino, who spent four-and-a-half years at Hoffenheim before joining Liverpool, initially struggled in the EPL.

He has since developed into an important first-team player, though, and wants to stay put for the foreseeable future.

“You really notice that the Premier League is much, much faster. The pace is very high and you do need to adjust, but this is a type of football that I enjoy.”

Pardew Gets The Axe At Crystal Palace

Featured Image

Crystal Palace have confirmed the exit of Alan Pardew from the club in his capacity as a manager.

Pardew left Newcastle in January 2015, to take over at the eagles and he led them to 10th on the table. However, his first full season was not a success, as a dreadful second half to the season saw them finish five points above the drop zone.

The former Southampton boss also failed to win the FA cup, despite making it to the final, losing 2-1 to United after extra time.

And Pardew has failed to turn around their fortunes in the first half of the 2016-17 season, with Palace just a point above the bottom three with 15 points from 17 games.

Chairman Steve Parish said: “I would like to put on record our sincere gratitude for the tremendous service Alan has given us, both in his time here as manager and previously as a player.

“Following a fantastic second half of 2014-15, the 2015-16 season culminated in only narrowly missing out on winning the FA Cup as well as securing our Premier League place for a record-breaking fourth time.

“During his tenure Alan’s hard work and dedication were without question, he has improved so many areas of the club and we wish him the very best for the future.

“With games now coming thick and fast over the holiday period the club are hoping to put someone in place as quickly as possible but have nothing to say about a replacement at this time.”

Romelu Lukaku Likely To Sign New Everton Contract But Can Still Decide To Quit The Club

Featured Image

Everton boss Ronald Koeman says the club are in talks with striker Romelu Lukaku over new contract

Everton where able to resist interest for the 23-year-old in the summer, but Mino Raiola said a new contract would not prevent him leaving at the end of the season.

Lukaku’s current Everton deal expires in 2019.

“We are talking to the club in a good spirit so we are very hopeful,” said Raiola, who met Everton’s majority shareholder, Farhad Moshiri, and the chairman, Bill Kenwright, at the Merseyside derby on Monday. “There are no problems on the way that I foresee. I don’t see any big problems. It is a question of putting the details on the paper.”

Lukaku joined the Toffees from Chelsea for a club-record £28m in 2014 and has scored 70 goals in 142 appearances, last season becoming the first Everton player since Gary Lineker to score 25 league goals in a single campaign.

Everton placed a prohibitive £60m transfer fee on the 23-year-old in the summer, sufficient to ward off interest from his former club Chelsea and keep Lukaku at Goodison for Koeman’s first campaign as manager. The striker has responded with nine goals and three assists but Raiola admits Lukaku’s position will be reviewed at the end of the season.

“With Everton, we have 99.9% reached terms,” the agent said. “If Romelu is good enough, strong enough, to move in the next year then we will talk to Everton about it. It is a very good relationship at the moment. We know what both parties want. Everton is going through a transition from a club that was maybe aiming for Europa League and now they are more ambitious and maybe in the near future will go into the Champions League or maybe even win the Premier League at a certain stage. For sure, it is an interesting club in England.”

Raiola added: “In football, you can’t look too much in front. You need to take it one transfer window at a time. For now, we are agreeing terms and then we will see in the summer what happens and how the situation is. If there is an interest from both parties to move on, then we will talk with the club, but at this point we only have one objective and that is to perform as well as possible for Everton.”

Aquilani has been left out of Massimo Oddo’s squad to face Palermo on Thursday and it appears a move away from Stadio Adriatico is imminent.

“The lad, despite training regularly and without any problems along with the group in recent days, in the morning he was in talks with Daniele Sebastiani and sporting director Luca Leone,” a statement begins.

“The Biancazzurri directors, after listening to the will of the lad and his agent, and backed by the Coach, have come to a mutual agreement that he won’t go to Palermo with the subsequent evaluation of a separation in the next market session.”

It’s not yet clear where Aquilani’s next destination will be, but Tuttomercatoweb believes Sassuolo are in pole position.

Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte has expressed regret at Steve Holland’s decision to leave but understands his wish to be England assistant boss.

The 46-year-old has been at Chelsea since 2009 and a constant in the coaching set-up despite the managerial turnover.

“It’s a pity to lose him,” former Italy coach Conte said on Thursday. “But also I can understand him for this choice, because this type of situation can arrive only once in life, to be a coach or assistant coach of your national team or your country.

“For this reason, I understand him. It’s a pity because I’ve worked very well with him. For the future, it’s important to be focused on the present and work with this staff.

“I have a great staff, a fantastic staff. There is a great spirit, a family spirit, with them. In the future, we’ll see.”
