#360EndOfYearReview: The10 Best Albums Of The Year

Featured Image

We’ve shared the 10 best songs, the biggest songs, the most disappointing album, here is a look at those who made the list of 10 best albums of the year 2016.

From Yemi Alade’s Mama Africa takeover to Kiss Daniel’s surprising New Era to Linsey Abudei proving bass is indeed queen.

  1. Mama Africa (Diary of an African Woman)- Yemi Alade

The title is only a ruse for Yemi Alade to thread her influences and copy-catting into a cohesive effort. But at the end of the day Mama Africa is as Nigerian pop as they come, only presented by an artiste with increasing foreign tastes. Azonto, Swahili, Coupe-decale, Juju, Fuji, Miss Alade tries them all and doesn’t always succeed. She deserves credit for effort still.

  1. The Playmaker- Phyno

Phyno – The Playmaker

The Playmaker is a big sprawling, glossy, messy but ultimately worthwhile outing. It is a project that can only come from a star at the peak of his fame, confident that his audience will be quick to forgive his excesses. And they are many. The disc does not aspire to perfection, wears it flaws proudly and seeks legitimacy in its failings. Do not be afraid to be human or to take risks, Phyno seems to be saying. And have fun while at it. The Playmaker is plenty fun.

  1. God Over Everything- Patoranking

Patoranking - God Over Everything

God Over Everything is an interesting record, reflecting an unlikely choice of direction for an artiste still high on his breakout success. The usual suspects- Wizzypro, EKelly, Sarz – all contribute to the production but Patoranking shows little inclination to pursue the hit making tendencies that made him such a successful singles artiste.

  1. Oba Orin- Jaywon

Album Review: Jaywon Is King on Oba Orin but of What Exactly?

Oba Orin is a fine collection of sounds that reflects Jaywon’s superior talent and the current state of pop music. It is rich, live, refreshing, timely and timeless all at once. Occasionally bewildering, it could have been arranged better and the lengthy track listing cut to a more responsible length. Jaywon may make a bold claim but none can say he doesn’t work for it every step of the way. Only time will tell if he has indeed earned the title.

  1. Suitcase- Aramide

Aramide's Album Art for Suitcase

Aramide’s debut is a welcome delight. Fun, flirty, sensual and an all-round great listen, Aramide incorporates elements of soul, funk, Jazz, folk, pop and mashes everything into a palatable mix that sounds different from most of what is on radio but is still relatable and recognisable as the unmistakable sound of Naija. If Afrobeat is going to stick around as a music genre of its own, then Suitcase is its best argument.

  1. Klitoris- Brymo

No two songs on Klitoris are quite similar and Brymo confidently stretches himself across a range of sounds and indulgences. The mixing, composition and finish on the album is indeed second to none and one leaves the record instantly itching to relive the experience all over again. There can be no higher praise than that.

  1. Taabaku- Beautiful Nubia

Taabaku- Beautiful Nubia

Beautiful Nubia, the alternative artiste and folk hero returns for his twelfth studio merry go round with 2016’s Taabaku, an engaging rich tapestry of sounds that mines the author’s roots in Apala, folklore, Jazz and storytelling. For the newcomers, now is as good a time as any to be initiated into the immersive sounds of Beautiful Nubia and the Roots Renaissance Band. For the cult members, Taabaku represents another wondrous slice of real life.

  1. New Era- Kiss Daniel

Album Review: Kiss Daniel Ushers in the Dawn of a New Era

Kiss Daniel proves himself a chip off the old block, but one with a style and essence that is all his. New Era is a delightful mix of breezy pop tunes crafted to fly by effortlessly. Hints of old masters (2face, 9ice) are present but Daniel still manages to come across as a refreshing change in a climate coloured by bland homogeneity.

  1. Gbagyi Child- Bez

For his sophomore studio record, Bez took all of five years since his Supersun debut. It was worth the wait. Gbagyi Child is an almost perfectly expressed product of musical introspection that reveals the growth of both the man and the musician at the centre of the project. Swirling, expressive, poetic, lush and bursting to the seams with its influences, Gbagyi Child is that record you didn’t know you needed.

  1. …And the Bass is Queen- Lindsay Abudei

…And the Bass is Queen. demands to be consumed as a whole as the songs segue deftly into the next. Radio will find it difficult identifying one hit single and this, instead of working as a disadvantage, is a testament to how compelling and complete the record is. At just about 50 minutes short, …And the bass is Queen. never outstays its welcome and builds to a deeply satisfying climax. Forget the bass, Lindsay Abudei is Queen.

Worthy mentions

Frankincense- Frank Edwards

El-Hadj- Reminisce

Out of the box- Sound Sultan

Wenger: Ozil’s Finishing In Training Is Better

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger has revealed that Mesut Ozil hits the target a lot better in training and is confident of him scoring more in the second half of the season.

The Germany international has scored only five goals in the league so far, scoring just six last season.

Wenger is convinced that the former Real Madrid star will soon start finding the net with more regularity, however, telling reporters: “In training he finishes much better than in the games.

“I am convinced that his percentage of finishing will go up in the coming months and he can have a huge contribution to the team, not only through his passing but as well through his finishing.”

Wenger added: “He is of course a huge player. I always defended him here in press conferences, because I believe that he has improved his commitment.

“Physically he works much harder than people think he does. As well, I believe this season he has scored more goals and personally I believe as well he creates more chances for himself than ever before.

“He runs more behind and I still think there is a gap between his potential finishing and the way he finishes.”

Which Nollywood Movie owned 2016? Vote Now

Featured Image

2016 came with some very good Nollywood movies.

As the year draws to a close, please participate in our poll by voting for our shortlist of Nollywood films who we believed owned 2016.

Take Our Poll
The Nollywood movie – The Arbitration is a competent outing for just about everyone involved, The Arbitration is a Nollywood rarity, a finely acted, adult leaning drama that is big on ideas and wants to be so much more than its obvious constraints. The Arbitration was directed by Niyi Akinmolayan.

Produced by the collective Nollywood powerhouses of EbonyLife films, Inkblot Productions and Koga Studios, The Wedding Party stays true to its promise; a well-presented, glamorous snapshot of modern living and an over the top Society Wedding Day. The Wedding Party was directed by Kemi Adetiba

Abba T. Makama’s ode to art house cinema, Green White Green is a stylish, chopped and screwed meta-adventure dressed as a film within a film. It follows a group of young bohemian artists hanging out, playing video games and in search of a direction in their lives in the stagnant months leading up to the beginning of their university studies.

An almost perfect confluence of funding, talent, skill and passion, the Nollywood movie – 93 Days traces the heroics of the Nigerian health workers who in 2014, put their lives on the line to stop Ebola in its track. 93 Days was directed by Steve Gukas

Adopting historical events as background for a young marriage’s ultimate test, ’76 speaks to the Nigerian experience, and all the effort put in is displayed on screen. The acting is (mostly) rock solid and the technical achievement is stunning to look at. Movies do not have to be perfect to work and this one is proof. The Nollywood movie ’76 was directed by Izu Ojukwu

Ibrahimovic: Cristiano Is Not The Natural Talent De Lima Was

Featured Image

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has no problem picking the best Ronaldo between Cristiano and De lima, he picks the Brazil legend Il Fenomeno.

Real Madrid’s Ronaldo has made a name for himself and has cemented himself among the greats, but according to United forward he doesn’t compare to his Brazilian namesake or Ronaldinho.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, has pinpointed the differences between the three legends.

“I think Ronaldo, Il Fenomeno, was the best,” he told ESPN Brasil. “For me, it was an example of what football is. Everything he did something that made you think ‘wow’. The way he dribbled and the way he ran.

“Ronaldo was natural, he was born to be what he was. It was not something he trained to become. This type of player is not made, he is born. He is unique.

“We [Ronaldinho and Ibrahimovic] played together at AC Milan, but he did not live the best days as before, but I loved it when we played and he was running with his hair messed up, dribbling fast and when he wanted to, he made others look like kids around him.

“As for Cristiano Ronaldo, we did not play together. It is different because it is the result of hard training. It is not natural.”

Still in incredible form at 35, Ibrahimovic is far from finished with football and could have a few more years left in him, and even suggested he would consider a move to Brazil.

“Maybe I should go to Brazil, you never know… (Maybe) I’d enjoy my football there.”

Rafinha Says Messi Is Better Than Ronaldo

Featured Image

Cristiano Ronaldo claimed this year’s Ballon d’Or, with Lionel Messi finishing second behind him, this won’t stop Rafinha from saying his Barca teammate is better than the Portuguese.

The Real Madrid and Portugal star beat Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann to claim the prestigious award.

But Rafinha, 23, believes Messi deserves to be considered top of the pile of current players.

“For me, the best player in the world is Messi,” he said.

Rafinha also offered his support to Barcelona coach Luis Enrique, who is yet to provide any assurances over his future beyond 2016-17.

He said: “We are very calm because we trust him a lot.”

5. Goodluck Jonathan:

Dele MomoduThe hero of last year’s presidential election in Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, was not just lauded by many for conceding to defeat, but for openly allowing for peace at a time when the country was apparently rent asunder in the abyss of chaos, further teetering on the brink of a cold war, coupled with the threat for Islamization and secession.

In May, the internet was furnished with rumours that the former president had exiled the country to a safer haven in Cote d’Ivoire in other to avoid the ‘current’ leadership crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP – an allegation he reacted to squarely with a rebuttal.

Gooduck Jonathan Arrives Nigeria

A week later, the flamboyant ex-president arrived the country in grand style and was received by different groups led by the Ijaw Youth Congress (IYC), even as the social media community was inundated with incessant salutations for the former president.

It Is Impossible To Say Dasuki Stole $2.2 Billion – Jonathan

In August, in the height of militancy, Dr Jonathan was accused by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) of supporting the activities of the militants – an accusation he reacted to, saying that the group was contracted with the mind of assassinating him.

Goodluck Jonathan May Return In 2019

While in November, the former president stated that it was not possible for the National Security Adviser (NSA) during his administration, Sambo Dasuki, to have stolen $2.2 billion as claimed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), even as he indicated his reading to defend the ex-NSA in court.

4. Muhammadu Buhari:

Muhammadu Buhari, who is currently the President of Nigerian, is easily one person prone to censure, disparage and outrage, in a country, where the resources have diminished while corruption is being hallowed and allowed to reign in supremacy.

You can barely talk about anything in the country, on newspapers and social media without him getting dragged into the canoe of blame and culpability.

A leader that has out-rightly earned my respect, Buhari’s addiction to anti-corruption and chronic allergy to ostentatious pageantry has overwhelmingly drawn a delicate line between exultant frivolity and ruthless precision, which then inked the dotted mark of the Midas touch in him to wield the big stick on anybody unwilling to embrace his war against corruption.

However, his good works have continuously been undermined due to the personnel he has decided to surround himself with as ministers.

3. Wizkid:

FascinatingAyodeji Ibrahim Balogun, better known by his stage name Wizkid, is not just one of the most talked about entertainers in Nigeria but the biggest African act in the last two years.

Wizkid, Olamide Nominated For 2016 MTV Europe Music Awards

2016 will go down as a very successful year for the “Ojuelegba” crooner, who was nominated and subsequently won loads of awards in Nigeria and globally with an increase popularity that holds no boundary.

Wizkid Emerges Best African Act At MTV Europe Music Awards 2016

In November, in a highly surprising turn of events, he was made to surrender the Best Africa Act award he won at the MTV Europe Music Awards to Alikiba; a musician from Tanzania.

However, as of June 2016, the sensational artist has received a total of 25 awards from 106 nominations.

He is the recipient of a BET Award, a MOBO Award, five The Headies Awards, two Channel O Music Video Awards, six Nigeria Entertainment Awards, two Ghana Music Awards, two Dynamix All Youth Awards, two City People Entertainment Awards, and a Future Award.

Why Wizkid Could Not Have Won That BET Award

In addition, he has been nominated three times at the MTV Europe Music Awards as well as four times at the World Music Awards.

Nigeria’s Wizkid And Kah-Lo Get Nominated For The 59th Grammy Awards

To add to that, this year, Wizkid co-wrote, co-produced and featured on the hottest song of this summer, One Dance by Drake – a feat only few African artists can attempt.

2. Bobrisky:

Cross-dressing social media sensation, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, became popular in Nigeria by the second half of this year, when Snapchat started to garner overwhelming presence in the country.

VIDEO: Snapchat Star Idris ‘Bobrisky’ Okuneye Denies Being Gay

Also known as the male Barbie of Snapchat, Bobrisky’s popularity was in tandem to controversies and backlashes after he claimed he had a lover who is assumed to be male even though he only refers to the person as “bae”.

His bizarre penchant to dress like a woman coupled with a skin that has been whitened with a heavy feminine makeup illustrates him as the infamous version of Michael Jackson.

He has also challenged ladies to a contest on who could keep a man, showed off gifts from his “bae”, advertised his bleaching cream and told anyone who cared to listen, how rich he was.

Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Anglophone West Africa, said Bobrisky was most searched individual from October 26 to November 2016.

1. MMM Nigeria:

FG Set To Shut Down MMM, Other Wonder Banks From Operations In NigeriaThe Mavrodi, Melnikova, Mavrodi (MMM), better known in Nigeria as the Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox, is unarguably the most talked about subject in the country’s socio-econo-political niche, following its operation that is grounded on the greed of men to make quick money without paying the price of hard work.

Why Every Nigerian Must Know About MMM (1)

The Ponzi scheme, which had gained prominence in notoriety, had broken the ‘hearts’ of over 3 million Nigerians earlier this month, after it announced the suspension of payments to participants till January 2017.

MMM Resurfaces In Kenya Barely Days After Leaving 3 Million Nigerians Heartbroken

Nigerians, who had basked in the thought of enjoying the Christmas celebrations with the money they had cashed out on the wonder bank, were left to wallow in the gust of panic and alternatives following the incident.

‘MMM Is A Fraud, Don’t Patronize It’ – CBN Warns Nigerians

Not to forget, this was coming after the Nigerian government had warned its citizens against patronising the wonder bank, with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) describing the ponzi scheme as fraud, coupled with an order from the House of Representatives for an investigation into the operations of the scheme.

Access Bank Warns Its Customers Against Patronising MMM

Sequel to the announcement of the one month ban, the premier anti graft agency was dragged into the ‘livid’ hullabaloo that was triggered in the country’s social media community, after a Twitter user @Lolami_Boo, called out the agency, beckoning on other MMM users to hold them responsible for the alleged crash of the ponzi scheme.

Before MMM, Nigerians Were Already Greedy And Vulnerable

Apparently unwilling to succumb to petty and frivolous accusations, the EFCC, swiftly yet satirically, on its official handle @officialEFCC replied:

“You mean amongst the plethora of venality we fight daily, Ponzi schemes aren’t sustainable?

“There were a number of warning.”

The MMM Promoters In Nigeria: The Blind Leading The Blind (2)

Despite the adversities and controversies that sandwiched properly with the current recession, Nigerians were not caught napping, as the Christmas festivity was well celebrated, even as we all pray for a better 2017 with barely hours to the valediction of 2016.

God Bless Nigeria!!!

Ronaldo Rejects $317M Transfer Bid From Chinese Club

Featured Image

World player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo rejected a world record £257million (300m euros, $317m) bid from China, his agent Jorge Mendes has claimed.

Jorge Mendes, Ronaldo’s agent, told Sky Sports Italia in an exclusive interview on Thursday that there is a $317 million offer on the table.

He added that the unnamed Chinese Super League side had offered the 31-year-old Portuguese superstar a record £85m a year as salary.

“From China, they’ve offered 300m euros to Real Madrid and more than 100m (euros) per year to the player,” said Mendes.

“But money is not everything. Real Madrid is his life. Cristiano is happy at Real Madrid and it is impossible to go to China.”

Mendes added that the star of his stable was out of reach.

“The Chinese market is a new market,” said Mendes.

“They can buy a lot of players, but then again it is impossible to go for Ronaldo.

“Cristiano is the best player in the world and best ever. It is normal to have some offers.

“He won the European Championship with Portugal, it’s like winning the Italian league with Genoa: they were not the favourite,” added the 50-year-old Portuguese.

China has through its Super League clubs flexed considerable financial muscle in the international transfer market, most recently buying Brazilian international Oscar from Chelsea and Argentinian veteran Carlos Tevez — with the latter reportedly set to earn 38million euros a year.

If this had worked out, it would almost triple the world record transfer fee Manchester United paid for Paul Pogba this summer which was $110 million.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the petition, which was jointly signed by the Ibadan Zone Chairmen of ASUU, Dr Ade Adejumo, and the University of Ibadan chairman, Dr Deji Omole, indicted the former Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede – now the registrar of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) – and the incumbent Abdulganiyu Ambali, in a fraud totalling more than N2 billion.

Other signatories are: Dr Biodun Olaniran of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Dr Dauda Adeshina, Kwara State University, and Dr Kayode Afolayan of the University of Ilorin.

The union further labelled the University of Ilorin management as one of the most corrupt in any higher institution.

It was stated in the petition that the institution has been operating under the pretext of keeping stable academic calendar to silence whistle blowers while perpetrating enormous fraud.

The allegations listed in the petition included pension fraud, unremitted deductions, extortion from students, contract inflation and kick-backs; as well as unlawful payments to ex-principal officers of the university.

Adejumo urged the EFCC to investigate the “monumental fraud perpetrated by the past and present administrations of the university.’’

They said the former vice chancellor, in 2011, doubled the amount of pension being deducted from staff under the pretext that the previous deductions were lower than prescribed in law.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the legal minimum prescribed by Pension Act at the time was 7.5 of emoluments and the staff were already paying even above this minimum. By way of comparison, in federal universities such as University of Lagos( UNILAG) and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife the sum of N20,124.62 is deducted from each professor as pension contribution per month.

“However, at UNILORIN the sum of N40,206.42 is deducted monthly for the same “pension contribution”. Contrary to law, the extra deductions did not derive from any agreement with the workers; indeed, the forced deductions were protested to no avail. For the avoidance of doubt, the pension law does not empower an employer to forcefully deduct above the minimum from any employee. ”

“But the management pushed out the argument, through their cronies that whatever amount is deducted for pensions would be automatically doubled and that the deductions were, therefore, “for our benefit.” The import of this is that government is being made, perhaps unknowingly, to pay double the amounts prescribed by law, to the Pension Fund Administrators and the subscribers, thereby constituting an unwarranted extortion or drain on the treasury. The quantum involved in this fraud is in billions and is continuing”, it stated.

The petitioners also alleged a fraud of N1.5billion jointly perpetrated by the immediate past vice chancellor and the incumbent on fraudulent and unremitted deductions from staff salaries.

“Having given the impression of assisting the workers by extorting more from the treasury than the law prescribes, the UNILORIN authorities now set out to defraud the same workers by making additional deductions from their salaries under false pretext.

“From May 2012 to December 2013, the University of Ilorin Administration deducted further sums ranging from about N9,000 – N20,000 monthly from each staff claiming these to be “arrears of extra-deduction.” However, these extra deductions never reflected in the pension statements of the staff concerned to date. The quantum involved in this fraud is in the neighbourhood of N1.5 billion.

“Our preliminary investigations revealed that billions of naira have been so extorted from about 35,000 students including Sandwich students over the past years. The group of graduating medical students actually wrote to the authorities to demand a refund but they were ignored.”

The union, therefore, called on the EFCC to do a diligent and thorough investigation of the allegations, adding that if such was done, the anti-corruption agency would discover a can of worms.

A copy of the petition was stamped by the EFCC as received on December 29, 2016.

Williams’ media representative has also confirmed the engagement.

Williams and Ohanian, who have been dating since the fall of 2015, have mostly kept their romance out of the spotlight, though she does post pictures of them on her Instagram account from time to time.

This caps off a year in which Williams won her seventh Wimbledon singles title and 22nd Grand Slam singles title, but dropped to world number two ranking.

However, the couple will not have much time to celebrate just yet as Williams is currently in New Zealand preparing to compete in the ASB Classic.

Nigeria’s Naira, 3 Others Rated Worst Currencies In The World In 2016

The naira is one of the world’s four worst performing currencies in 2016, according to a report by Bloomberg LP.

The report indicated that the Nigerian currency has lost 36.68 per cent of its spot returns for the year.

Other currencies in the bottom four are:

  • The Egyptian pound
  • The Suriname dollar
  • The Venezuela bolivar

Which dropped by 58.84 per cent, 46.68 per cent and 37 per cent, respectively, for the period.

The currencies that performed well are the Russian ruble, Brazilian real, the palladium, the Iceland krona, and silver, which appreciated by 21.31%, 20.96%, 20.08%, 14.42% and 14.41% respectively – ending the year as the best five performing currencies of the world.

Two Africa currencies, the Zambian kwacha and South African rand, emerged as the sixth and seventh best performing currencies in the world. The kwacha and rand appreciated by 11.96 per cent and 11 per cent respectively.

The report stated: “It was a particularly bad year for any currency called the ‘pound’. The Egyptian version was the worst performer in 2016 as the nation took the dramatic step of allowing it to trade freely in an attempt to stabilise an economy struggling with a dollar shortage and concerns over social unrest. Britain’s pound tumbled after the Brexit and never recovered.”

“When it comes to currencies issued by governments and central banks, the Russian ruble has been the best performer of the year as the oil market rebounded.

“While the UK currency’s slide didn’t match those in some emerging markets, it did tally the worst performance among major currencies.”

Some of the factors that affected the Naira according to Bloomberg included bombing of pipelines by militants and the economic recession.
