Featured Image

Things are definitely heating up in the Big Brother Naija house!

Let’s run you through how they got here

  • Miyonse Records the highest votes; TBoss nominates Miyonse
  • Head of House, CoCoIce saves Gifty and replaces her with Efe
  • New housemates Debbie-Rise and Bassey exempted this Week

After a week of excitement and a mock eviction which shook the housemates and brought some of them to tears, Big Brother Naija is set for the first real eviction come Sunday, February 5. The housemate with the least number of votes will be evicted from the house, cutting short the dream of winning 25 million naira and an SUV.

On Monday night, BBNaija fans witnessed the first live nomination show. The housemates were each given 45 seconds to nominate two fellow housemates for possible eviction. However, new housemates Bassey and Debbie-Rise were exempted from nominating and being nominated this week. After the housemates’ individual sessions with ‘Biggie’, it was revealed that Miyonse, Soma and Gifty got the most nominations from other housemates. Perhaps the most shocking move was when TBoss, Miyonse’s on and off ‘girlfriend’ put him up for nomination!

Then the moment came when Biggie asked the head of house (HoH), CoCoIce to save one of the nominated housemates and replace with another. CoCoIce then proceeded to save Gifty and replaced her with Efe.

The first eviction show holds on Sunday, 5 February.

To save your favorite housemate, viewers in Nigeria should text the word “Vote” followed by the housemate’s name to 32052. While for the rest of Africa, follow the AfricaMagictv official account on WeChat and click on the menu option ‘BBNaija’ and select your preferred housemate. Voting opens at 21h00 WAT on Monday, 30 January and closes at 20h00 WAT on Saturday, 4 February.

The show is aired 24/7 in 45 countries from Nigeria through East, West and Southern Africa on DStv channel 198 and GOtv channel 29.

Mason: I Feel Lucky After Surviving Skull Fracture

Featured Image

Hull City midfielder Ryan Mason has spoken for the first time since sustaining a skull fracture against Chelsea.

The midfielder was involved in an aerial collision with Gary Cahill and he says he feels lucky to be alive.

Mason was given oxygen and put in a neck brace on the pitch before he was transferred to St. Mary’s. He has now thanked fans for their support.

“I would like to thank everyone for the overwhelming support that has been shown to both me and my entire family over the past week or so,” Mason wrote.

“It has been an emotional rollercoaster and I feel lucky to be alive, but I’m happy to say that I’m now at home resting and recovering.

“My fiancé and family have read so many messages of support to me over the past week. To have had so many people send messages to me, including from fellow players, clubs (in particular the support shown to me from both Hull City and Tottenham Hotspur), so many fans as well as the support I have received from the general public around the world has been completely overwhelming.

“Each and every message of support really has given me strength and I cannot tell you how much it means to me.

“The love and support my mum, dad, sisters, fiancé Rachel and all of my friends and family have shown to me during what has been an extremely traumatic time for all involved has been incredible and I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart for being there for me throughout.

“Finally, I would like to say a special thank you to all of the medical staff at Hull, as well as the medical team at Chelsea and of course the fantastic treatment and support I have received from all the staff during my stay at St Mary’s Hospital.

“I will now be taking each day as it comes and concentrating on my recovery.”

Dante Backs Guardiola To Get It Right At Manchester City

Featured Image

Nice defender, Dante is certain and sure Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola will get it right soon.

The Spaniard endured the longest winless run of his career, failing to win six straight matches last year.

Manchester City have struggled for consistency since then. They’ve lost to Chelsea and Liverpool and currently sit 10 points behind Chelsea and fifth on the table.

Dante was coached by Guardiola in Bayern Munich and won two titles with the Spaniard and the Brazilian trusts his former manager to get it right.

He told Omnisport: “The first year can be difficult, because the leagues are so different. In Spain the competition is between three teams, in Germany it’s usually between two, but in England there are six teams, so it is different.

“Pep is a coach who works with 100 per cent commitment to his philosophy, so players need to understand his philosophy 100 per cent, and of course, in England, the way they play is a bit harder and very athletic.

“Perhaps in the first year he is feeling it is difficult, but when the players adapt to his philosophy, to the way he thinks, they will progress.

“Next year, things will happen like he wants them to.”

The Naira Is Dead: Lets Redenominate The Currency Before Its Too Late

The Naira Is Dead: Lets Redenominate The Currency Before Its Too Late!, By Paul Alaje

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

The naira was first introduced as the official currency of Nigeria in 1973, as replacement of the one with a colonial notation. Thus, the naira and kobo replaced the pound and shilling. Nigeria currencies were also introduced in coins and notes, with the half kobo, one kobo, 10 kobo and 25 kobo. These were token coins with reasonable purchasing powers. In the currency of fiat were the 50 kobo, one naira, five naira, while the 10 naira was the highest denomination.

This piece was written by Paul Alaje. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

As the economy grew due to the oil boom, the 20 naira note was introduced in 1977. However, with the devaluation of the naira in 1991, some denominations were withdrawn, whilst the 50 naira was also introduced. This was geared at increasing the money supply and devaluing the currency to boost demand for local products, as prescribed by the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP). Yet, as good as the programme ought to have been, due to little or no effort towards export promotion and import substitution, the policy failed in Nigeria.

Panic As Naira Plunges To An All Time Low Of 500 Per Dollar

Much later, in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2005, there were the introduction of the 100 naira, 200 naira, 500 naira and 1000 naira notes respectively, due to the lower purchasing command of previous denominations, policy failure, inflation and low public confidence in the lower currencies. While several administrations searched for soft-landing through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), much of the work had little impact due to poor fiscal complement from the government end. It was either an era of fiscal rascality or misery. There was little attention to manufacturing and education.

Today, all the token coins re-introduced under Prof. Chuckwuma Charles Solodu as CBN governor have returned to antiquity and become memorabilia in people’s offices, homes, wallets and currency museums. Although still legal tenders, they are of no value today. In spite of these forms of money being backed by government legislation, their acceptability remains a major concern that authorities must consider, as in the case of ‘the…enforcement by the CBN in 2007’.

The former CBN governor, Mr. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi attempted to print the 5000 naira note in 2012 but was vehemently opposed by Nigerians. In fact, the plan then was to convert lower denominations of the naira to coins. What is clear is that, perhaps, all the several CBN governors, including the present one, mean well for Nigeria. The problem seems to come from lateness in taking appropriate decisions and proper policy implementation.

At the moment, the denominations we have in polymer notes consist of the five naira, 10 naira, 20 naira and 50 naira, with their costs of production fast approaching their face values. In theory, the currencies ought to be converted to coins, however the purchasing power of most of the denominations are next to zero.

Naira Weakens Further Against 3 Major Currencies At Parallel Market

Therefore, the conversion to coins will not solve much problems. Similarly, the paper money comprising the 100 naira, 200 naira and 500 naira, 1000 naira notes have lost over 75 percent of their purchasing powers since their initial commencement of production. Inflation, poor currency management, over reliance on a single major export product – oil, disconnects between fiscal and monetary policies/authorities, currency trafficking, a largely monetised polity, abnormal taste for foreign products, inability to hold governments accountable to better fiscal/monetary management, and a lot more, are responsible for the emaciating naira. I am not sure we are still serious about solving the problems facing the naira today.

Can we say the naira is dead? What is not in doubt is that the original value of naira is now in the negative. What we know is that the value of one naira in 1973 was more than that of one thousand naira today. $1 equaled 63 kobo in 1973. Today a dollar is N315 at the interbank rate and N500 at the street rate. Besides, what N1 could buy in 1973, N1000 cannot buy in 2017. Between 2007 and 2017, we can also notice that $1 was N115, but today it is N315, and more. More than one hundred percent of the value of the naira is gone, if we use 2007 as a base year. It will be worrisome to compare the price of a bag of cement, a litre of PMS, a litre of kerosene, a tin of milk, a bar soap, a cup of sugar, a bag of rice, a pair of shoe, a cup of garri and many more in year 2007 to what the price is today (ten years later). A more stable economy would only have had a little differential in value.

Naira Trades At 494/$ On Christmas Day, From 268/$ On December 25, 2015

What is the way forward? Diversifying the economy, improving infrastructure, hoping for positive externalities, reviewing the exchange rate policy and import substitution. All of these solutions are very important but the willingness to do these presently is what is begging for a response. Political solutions seem to hold sway for real economic issues, and it should be noted that these are not short-term based.

Redenominating our currency is very important now before it is too late. While I agree this may not directly affect the GDP figures, it will help reduce some of the pressure on naira and in fact induce GDP growth. Now the question is, ‘What is the redenomination of a currency’?

Currency redenomination is the process where a new unit of money replaces an old unit according to a certain ratio. This can be achieved by removing zeros from a currency (i.e. moving some decimal points to the left). The aim would be the correction of perceived misalignments between a currency and the pricing structure, while enhancing the credibility of the local currency.

My recommendation is that we need to drop two zeros from the currency or move it by two decimal places to the left. The name of the national currency will still be the naira or any other name as government may deem it fit. However, to avoid confusion, when transacting, the existing naira will be referred to as the “old naira”, and the new one will be called the “new naira” or described by any other name.

The benefits of this policy are enormous, including to better anchor inflation expectations, strengthen public confidence in the naira (or any other name government may prefer), make for easier conversion to other major currencies, reverse the tendency for currency substitution as we currently witness, eliminate higher denomination notes with lower purchasing power, reduce the cost of production of a currency with little purchasing power, and the distribution and processing of the currency. Also, to promote the usage of coins and thus a more efficient pricing and payment system, enable the availability of cleaner notes with stronger values, and deepen the foreign exchange market. This would equally ensure more effective liquidity management and monetary policy, expose stolen money, make for the convertibility of the naira and hence greater confidence in the national economy and lead to greater inflow of foreign investment, whilst positioning the naira to become the ‘reference currency’ in Africa. The CBN will more so be able to better capture the currency for better policy formation.

Naira Crashes To A New Record Low Against Dollar As CBN Prepares To Eliminate Parallel Market

The failure to consider this policy will result in the continuous speculation on the naira. About a year ago, we had warned that the naira might emaciate to as much as N500 to the dollar by the end of 2016. This is now the case at the parallel market, and the fear is, if we do not consciously terminate the speculation on the naira now, by the end of 2017, a dollar may be exchanging for N800.

There is nothing to fear about this policy as countries such as Germany, Hungary and more recently Ghana, have implemented it in fairly recent times.

The men, who were on the rampage when policemen from the Igando division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, Olatunji Ajimuda, stormed the area, also threatened to avenge the killing of their friend.

FRSC Calls For Nationwide Ban On Okada

Featured Image

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called on the federal government to implement a nationwide ban on commercial motorcycles popularly known as ‘Okada’ to reduce road accidents.

The call was part of the October Road Traffic Crash Report 2016, submitted by the Corps Marshal, Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi, to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

20 Okada Riders Killed By Snatchers In Kebbi

In the report, the Corps Marshal was quoted to have said that the commercial motorcyclist remained a major cause of fatal road traffic accidents across the country, hence the need for state governments to consider banning them from operating.

He said: “Following the outcome of the analysis, it could be concluded that motorcycle still constitutes serious menace on the nation’s highways.

“Accordingly, improved results could be achieved in the future, if more state governments could consider placing a ban on the use of motorcycle for commercial purposes.

“In view of the above, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation should facilitate and encourage state governments to ban the use of motorcycle for commercial purposes.’’

The RTC statistics for October 2016 showed that 230 cases or 18 per cent of a total of 1,259 vehicles involved in accidents within the month were commercial motorcycles.

Also in the report, motorcycle accidents ranked third after cars which accounted for 457 cases or 36 per cent, followed by minibuses with 243 or 19 per cent of the total.

Commercial motorcycle is currently banned from major routes in some cities and towns including Abuja and state capitals across the country.

Schalke have confirmed they have rejected an approach from Chelsea for Sead Kolasinac.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is looking for another wide option to add to his Premier League leaders on transfer deadline day.

Sead Kolasinac will be available on a free transfer this summer if he fails to agree a new deal with Schalke.

Kolasinac – who joined Schalke at 17 – has shown no inclination to rock the boat at the Veltins Arena, and although he is yet to agree a new deal, is happy at the Bundesliga club.

But despite running the risk of losing him for nothing at the end of the campaign, the Bundesliga club are adamant that Kolasinac will not be leaving before Tuesday’s deadline.

‘Yes, there was an offer [from Chelsea], but it was off the table immediately,’ Schalke’s sporting executive Christian Heidel told Bild.
