Nigerian Army Bars Soldiers On Duty From Posting Operations On Social Media

Featured Image

The Nigerian Army has barred its officers and soldiers on duty from uploading pictures and videos of its operations on social media.

Daily Trust gathered that Adeniyi Oyebade, a lieutenant-general and general officer commanding (GOC) 1 Division Mechanized Army, Kaduna, gave the directive on Tuesday on the order of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant-General Tukur Buratai.

He spoke at the graduation ceremony of Men of Nigerian Battalion (NIBBAT) 46 held at the Nigerian Army Peace Keeping Centre (NAPKC), Jaji in Kaduna state.

His words: “It is prohibited to upload any picture with your uniforms while in operation. Specifically, I want to warn you on the use of social media.

“While you are on operation, you may want to take photo shot of some good moment but you should be very careful while doing that.

“Avoid any picture or video that has to do with your colleague or operation. You are barred not to upload such information.

“It is prohibited to upload any picture with your uniforms while in operation, because it will become a pragmatic problem for the Nigerian Army.”

The order is coming at a time when soldiers participating in the war against insurgency are fond of posting pictures and videos on social media, especially after victories over Boko haram terrorists.

Afobe Says He Had To Be Tough To Leave Arsenal

Featured Image

Former Arsenal striker Benik Afobe Says he had to show strength to leave for the Championship at 21 and has praised Eddie Howe for taking a gamble on him.

The forward left for Wolves after playing for Arsenal since he was six and says his path back to the epl has not being an easy one.

“When I was 16 and I signed for Arsenal I thought I was a professional player, but there are a lot of players who sign at that age and are nowhere to be seen now”, Afobe told Bournemouth’s matchday programme.

“Coming from Arsenal and dropping down there are so many players that end up lower and are happy. That’s great but I wasn’t like that, by believing in myself I managed to get myself back here. I’m 23 now and I want to be the player that I’m hoping to become.

“I give Eddie Howe a lot of respect and credit for taking a chance on a lower league player who’d had injuries. I enjoy the training sessions and playing here in front of our fans, we’re a growing club and I feel we’re progressing forwards, that’s something I want to be a big part of”.

Managers Need To Be Liked By Their Players, Says Costa

Featured Image

Diego Costa has stated that it is quite important for managers to be liked by their players, relishing the chance to play for a friendlier Conte after Mourinho.

Mourinho returned to Chelsea and won the EPL, only for their title defense to be a complete failure.

And while Costa says Mourinho should not shoulder all the blame, he is glad for the family feeling that Conte has restored at the club.

He told Chelsea TV: “I think it’s really important for managers to be liked by his players because ultimately on the pitch, those players will give everything for their manager.

“We have had a change of manager, he is working us hard, but people like him, which is important for everyone connected to the club because it creates a good atmosphere. Sometimes you have managers that have to be the boss, but this manager is a bit friendlier and there is closeness there.

“It is really important to have that at your workplace for you to come in and feel happy. You need a good atmosphere and a bit of fun.

“When a game comes around, that’s the time to be serious. During the week the training sessions are serious, but away from there, you have to relax and switch off.

“We are a family, we spend so much time together, we have to do things that bring us closer together because if not, everything will be too regimented, too professional and I don’t like that, it’s not for me.”

On Mourinho and the changes made by the current regime which have delivered a 13-game winning run and a standing five points clear at the top of the Premier League table, Costa added: “We had a great manager in Mourinho, who gave us a lot in that first season [Costa’s first at the club]. But last season, things just didn’t go well for us.

“We knew we had to change things, it wasn’t just the manager’s fault. We had to put in that bit more too.

“Also in terms of change, it has been a bit of everything: a new manager and wanting to win things because when you do, it’s wonderful and losing hurts.

“We have the backroom staff that he brought too and they have contributed to the good atmosphere, so the manager is great and we are all behind him.

“We have got to know him properly now and while at first some people might not have liked some of the changes, now he is getting results and convincing people.”

Conte: Alonso Is Fit, But Luiz Is Playing Through Pain

Featured Image

Antonio Conte says Chelsea is injury free ahead of the match against Tottenham, with Marcos Alonso recovering from an injury knock he picked up against Stoke.

However, Conte confirms that David Luiz is still in pain from the challenge from Sergio Aguero in the win over City.

Alonso has played in every match Chelsea won during their 13-game winning streak, and Conte says he is contention for the match against Tottenham.

“Yes, he’s available for tomorrow,” he said when asked about the Spanish wing-back. “David is playing in this situation [with pain] after the game against Manchester City. Now, I think he’s improving.

“Now he’s getting better, his physical condition and his pain is improving a lot.”

Nigeria To Ban Importation Of Refined Petroleum Products

Featured Image

The Nigerian Government has revealed that it would ban the importation of refined petroleum products as from 2018.

Speaking on behalf of the government, the Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, said since her independence in 1960, Nigeria has relied on one commodity and subsequently relegated its revenue base.

Onu made this disclosure known in his country home Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State while addressing a meeting of stakeholders of the ruling All Progressive Congress.

He said Nigeria has continued to relegate its revenue base by relying on just oil products.

“Even now, Nigeria exports crude oil and imports petroleum products. When your economy is based on commodity, you cannot determine the price,” he said.

The minister also stated that the Ministry of Science and Technology was working hard to ensure that Nigeria changes from “resource-based economy to multi-faceted one.”

MMM, Ponzi Schemes And System Failure

Featured Image

MMM, Ponzi Schemes And System Failure, By BABA GRUMPY

I was incensed when I read a news article in December 2016. In the article, the founder of MMM Sergey (Sergei) Mavrodi said some rude words about the President of Nigeria.

This piece was written by Baba Grumpy. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

I desperately wanted him to physically visit Nigeria & as we say, ‘if dem born him well’, let him repeat those words so someone can shut his gob. It is ever so easy to throw insults from a long distance. I reckon a short sharp encounter with LASTMA will reset his poorly wired mental faculty. Forget all that strong man front.

After reading that article, I thought about writing this one on the systemic failure that allowed the MMM scheme take a strong hold on the Nigerian public.  My intention is not to focus on the specifics of Mavrodi’s comments as I have seen a robust line-by-line response by a Nigerian leaving in Russia.

Leave Us Alone – Why Every MMM Participant Has Already Lost (2)

Leave Us Alone – Why Every MMM Participant Has Already Lost (1)

I have also seen a few articles over the last few weeks comparing the Nigerian state to a ponzi scheme like MMM. I feel the articles comparing the Nigerian state to MMM are narrow minded and are potentially aimed at point scoring. If they are not, they will understand the following:

The entire global banking system is a Ponzi scheme. If every single depositor of ANY bank turned up today to withdraw his or her money, that bank will collapse. If you disagree or are tempted to argue about this, please be kind enough to read about fractional reserve banking first.

Retirement  / Pension systems everywhere is a Ponzi scheme. It is built on the belief that many will continue to pay in to allow retirees collect their pension. With longer life expectancy, low birth rate in many advanced countries, challenging global economic conditions, the rise / dominance of low wage jobs, those paying in today will be very lucky to get anything out in the future.

The ease with which politicians are able to call upon soldiers to defend the territorial integrity of any state is the world’s biggest ponzi scheme in my opinion. What do those soldiers get in return for cleaning up the mess created by the politicians? Some medal and some fancy parade if they are lucky to return from the battlefront without loss of life and limbs. What do their family get in return? Loved ones suffering from PTSD or some incurable trauma for the rest of their lives. Some return for today’s patriotism.

The MMM Promoters In Nigeria: The Blind Leading The Blind (2)

The MMM Promoters In Nigeria: The Blind Leading The Blind (1)

Also, the possibility of success, happiness, peace, security etc. held out to many by parents, teachers, religious leaders, politicians, mentors etc. is another huge ponzi scheme. If you realize that only 1% of the people in the world own as much as the remaining 99% you will realize that perhaps our teachers etc. have all sold us some utopian ponzi scheme about life in general.

To the narrow minded critics comparing Nigeria and its government to a ponzi scheme, be reminded that everything you accuse the government of, is backed by statute / law / regulations and there is often a legal recourse for most ‘government backed ponzi schemes’.  For example, there is deposit protection for your money in the bank if that bank fails. There is a pensions regulator that potentially ensures your old age money is safe in certain circumstances.

Leaving all of that aside, my biggest issue is the systems failure that ensures these Ponzi schemes continue to raise their heads and defraud ordinary people of their life savings. Nigerians have endured a lot. Forum Savings & Loan, Nospetco, Umana Umana and now MMM. What next? Full return of MMM in January? Buy a lottery ticket first please.

A common thread through all of the Ponzi schemes is a failure of the system. The financial system, the financial regulation system, financial crime compliance systems, and in the case of MMM, the failure of the Church and of society in particular.

My focus is mostly about the Nigerian financial services industry, its regulator & those entrusted with enforcing any regulatory penalties. If you discount the fact that today’s world is far more interconnected than the days when Forum, Umana Umana and Nospetco reigned, you then wonder why the Nigerian system allowed MMM take root in the country.

MMM: Nigerians Are Not Greedy, Merely Desperate

It is not as if nobody knew of MMM before they dropped anchor in Nigeria. It is not as if Mavrodi is an ex – convict and that his new world order otherwise known as MMM had not caused misery in other countries.  It is not as if nobody has heard of Bernard Madoff before. That respectable former Chairman of NASDAQ and a well respected member of America’s elite.

Mr. Madoff ‘s Ponzi scheme has been branded as the world’s largest.  He made the American investment community look like idiots and its regulators like The US Security & Exchange Commission look like naïve schoolboys.

I am aware that Madoff’s Ponzi scheme is in no way similar to MMM’s scam. Madoff’s scheme was well disguised. It was disguised as a regulated investment scheme, a scheme regulated by a government type body. However the regulator dropped the ball. The sophisticated investors who were charmed and offered ‘too good to be true’ returns dropped the ball as well.  On a slightly positive note, it appears only half of his victims eventually lost money but America and the world learnt something from the unraveling of the Madoff Ponzi scheme and have put in a lot of circuit breakers into the financial services industry to potentially avoid the recurrence of such a blatant ponzi scheme.  One of the largest banks was sued for enabling (effectively acting as the bank account) Madoff’s ponzi scheme and lost a lot of money as a result of the court case. Boiler room schemes (very similar to Ponzi schemes) abound but regulators in Western Europe and America go to great lengths to monitor these schemes and nip them in the bud. They are not uninterested and they don’t decide to act when it is too late.

Some of the overall changes implemented by banks and regulators worldwide include what I choose to call, a more hardnosed approach to know your customer. As we speak, unexplained large deposit sums into personal or business bank accounts are investigated. Verifiable evidence needs to be provided or the owners of the bank account are reported to the authorities and their account closed, sometimes without notice. These actions will not cure all financial crimes, as bad things will continue to happen as long as there are bad people.

Why Every Nigerian Must Know About MMM (1)

But what did we do in Nigeria with MMM? What are we doing? Will the financial services regulators in Nigeria be bold enough to take enforcement actions against the religious organizations that promoted the sale / spread of a financial product without authorization? Are there Civil Society Organizations or High Profile Human Right lawyers who can sue these religious organizations for their role in the MMM scheme?

What steps did our banks & other financial institutions take when they noticed that the deposits into the bank account of some of their customers did not follow a usual pattern? Did they have robust know your customer policies in place? Did they report these unusual transactions based on the applicable money laundering regulations and if they did, what did the regulators do with the reports? These questions can be asked of our financial institutions with respect to all financial crimes in Nigeria as it appears without the aid of the financial services infrastructure in Nigeria, theft of communal funds might reduce significantly.

When MMM froze its scheme in Nigeria, the EFCC which is at the apex of our financial crime fighting infrastructure in Nigeria suggested through its social media / twitter handle that investigating the MMM scheme wasn’t at the top of its priority.  I think it is wrong for them to think this way. To think that the MMM scheme was outside of their remit. Yes, there is a view that those that were scammed were deserving of their fate or were greedy. But the naivety or greed of the MMM participants does not change the fact that a group of people (The MMM promoters) perpetrated a financial crime, they contrived to market & sell a product or service or scheme of a financial nature without the approval of any of the regulator in the financial services industry and they succeeded in attracting a large number of Nigerians to their scheme.

Nobody took enforcement action and the scheme grew to the extent that 3 million Nigerians participated. In a country where less than 24 million BVN numbers have been issued, 3 million participants in a ponzi scheme should be considered systemically important. These high number / significant number of MMM participants that should have attracted the interest of all financial services regulators including the EFCC.  It is not enough to say participants were warned. Anything that threatens the smooth running of the financial services sector and integrity of investments & investment products should be of serious interest to the authorities and steps should have been taken to disrupt the MMM scheme at its infancy.

Before MMM, Nigerians Were Already Greedy And Vulnerable

The above is not in anyway absolving participants of their misguided action in investing in the MMM scheme. Perhaps we shouldn’t shed tears for the ones who went in with their eyes opened despite the alarm bell type caveats sounded by the MMM operators. I am however certain that some people only joined the scheme because Pastor Lagbaja of Kofosi Parish said it was a good scheme at Sunday service. I also believe there are many barely literate or vulnerable people who couldn’t understand or read the terms and conditions of the MMM scheme and decided to lunge in head first. They all lost but the greatest loser is the financial services industry in Nigeria as a few more people lose faith / trust in the system. The greatest tragedy in my opinion is that nobody (apparently) is interested in ensuring the MMM promoters meet with their nemesis in the hands of law enforcement agents.

Buhari Removes Babachir As Boards Committee Chairman, Appoints Osinbajo

Featured Image

There are strong indications that President Muhammadu Buhari has removed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir David Lawan as chairman of the presidential committee on the reconstitution of federal government boards of parastatals, agencies and commissions.

Daily Trust quoted sources as saying that the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has been appointed to chair the presidential committee.

READ President Buhari’s New Year Message To All Nigerians

This is just as the chairman of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agencies (NDLEA) Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah was also appointed head of secretariat.

“The SGF is no longer in charge of that responsibility, for obvious reasons,” one of the sources said.

While another source said the committee “is working vigorously and will soon conclude its work after which it will submit its report to Mr President.”

There are also rumours that the president has begun to search for a new SGF following the indictment of Lawal by the Nigerian Senate.

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has recently queried the SGF over alleged fraud at the Presidential Initiative on North East (PINE).

The Senate ad-hoc committee on mounting crisis of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Northeast had also accused the SGF of several misdeeds including failing to account for N2.5 billion PINE funds.

An accusation that he profoundly denied.

In his New Year message, Buhari had admitted that his “government is aware of some mistakes and wrongdoings in handling the affairs of IDPs. We are taking measures to correct those mistakes and punish the culprits”.

Cech On Title Race: Everything Is Possible

Featured Image

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech believes the title race is still alive, but feels the two loss before Christmas hurt them.

The gunners are nine points behind leaders Chelsea and will Bournemouth later today as they look to reduce that deficit.

Arsenal won their last two matches against Crystal Palace and West Brom, but 2-1 losses to Everton and City are what really pains Cech.

“We had a period where we kept an unbeaten run for a long time,” he told the Arsenal website.

“We had the week which made the biggest damage, where we played Everton and Manchester City, and that’s what created the bigger gap at the top.

“But I think overall we are in a position where we have the chance to go and try to win the title. It all depends on the teams in front of us, if they drop points, but there are a lot of games to be played.

“At the start of the season, Chelsea had back-to-back defeats, and everyone was talking about the manager leaving and the players changing.

“Suddenly they managed to get a record run of victories and they are top of the table at the moment. You can see that everything is possible – it doesn’t mean they will keep winning every game.

“If you look at the number of games and points to be played and won, there’s more than one reason to believe that everything is possible.”

Klopp Can’t Defend Draw Against Sunderland

Featured Image

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could not supply an answer after his men twice surrendered the lead against Sunderland to draw 2-2.

Jermaine Defoe scored from the spot in either half to cancel Sturridge’s opener and restore parity after Mane put the Reds in front again.

Klopp will not agree Liverpool dropped important points as they failed to close the gap between them and Chelsea.

“No, they are not (crucial points dropped),” Klopp told Sky Sports. “Think about it, the others have to play and there are a lot of games to go. It’s not nice for us.

“I have no answers today, not because of the result but because I knew before I wouldn’t know what to say. Two games in two days is very difficult and we did well given that, but I’m not sure.

“It was a very difficult 90 minutes, I have no real idea because I know we can play better football but I’m not sure we could have today because we played two days ago.

“But you all want to see these games, even when you don’t show them to people in your own country. So I’m not sure, I’m a little bit in between.”

BREAKING: Jigawa State House Of Assembly Speaker Impeached

Featured Image

The Jigawa State House of Assembly on Tuesday impeached its Speaker, Idris Garba, and elected Isa Idris of Gwaram Constituency as the new Speaker – making him the third speaker to lose his post in recent days across Nigeria.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Garba was removed by members of the house on Tuesday morning, in a sitting that was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Garba, and attended by 23 members.

Abia State House Of Assembly Speaker Impeached

The Clerk of the house, Hussaini Ali, earlier announced that he received an impeachment notice signed by 25 of the 30 assembly members, and which he read on the floor of the house.

Mr. Ali disclosed that members of the assembly impeached the speaker due to alleged high handedness and abuse of power.

The Deputy Speaker read the impeachment notice on the floor of the house and confirmed the number of members that signed the notice.

Mr. Garba said that 25 of the 30-member assembly that endorsed the impeachment notice showed that it met the constitutional requirement of two third to impeach any of its principal officers.

“With this development, I hereby declare the seat of the Speaker vacant and a fresh election should be conducted to elect the new speaker,” he said.

Last week, Abia State House of Assembly impeached a speaker and the replacement resigned 24 hours after.

In Rivers State, the speaker also stepped down by ‘political arrangement’ for a new one.

NDLEA Discovers Cocaine Worth N1.9 billion Hidden Inside Soles Of New Shoes: NDLEA

The statement added that the substance was discovered in a shipment of shoes during inward screening of passengers on a Turkish Airline flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The statement read: “The discovery was made in a shipment of shoes during inward screening of passengers on a Turkish airline flight from Sao Paulo,  Brazil.

“The cocaine was industrially concealed in the soles of new foot wears.

“It was the last arrest of 2016 at the Abuja airport with an estimated value of 3.8 million pounds.

“There was an arrest at the weekend of a 34- year old suspect, Kingsley Okolo.

“The suspect who is a motorcycle parts dealer said that he was offered the N1 million to smuggle the drugs to Nigeria.

“Investigation is on going and the suspect is cooperating with our team of undercover officers.”

Ofoyeju also quoted the chairman of the NDLEA, Mr Muhammad Abdallah, as saying that the huge profit derived from drug trafficking has made it a top priority for drug cartels to be financially incapacitated.

“We must continue to take deliberate steps to intercept drugs and ultimately prevent the criminal enrichment of drug cartels.

“Illicit drug proceeds negatively affect economic development and could be used to corrupt government officials and fund terrorism thereby subjecting mankind to widespread destruction,” Abdallah stated.

The chairman also commended the arresting officers describing the seizure as one of the benefits of training.

“The seizure is a validation of enhanced capacity of officers due to series of training programmes carried out by the Agency.”

He appealed to stakeholders to intensify the anti-narcotics campaign adding that ‘we needed all hands on deck as we begin the new year.

The NDLEA boss said the suspect would soon be charged to court.

Alex Iwobi Hoping To Keep Pressure On Chelsea

Featured Image

Arsenal and Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi has urged his side to maintain their form in order to keep up the pressure on league leaders Chelsea.

The Gunners have won their last two matches without conceding, but they remain nine points behind Antonio Conte’s side, who have won 14 matches in a row.

“This time last year I was just playing in the cup games and happy to be there. To be starting almost every week is just amazing progress for me. I’m still young, still learning and there is still a long way to go. [Number 10] is where I have grown up playing and where I enjoy playing the most but wherever I am put on the pitch, I will do my best and whenever I get told to play any position I give 100%,” Alex Iwobi told reporters.

“There are a lot of players who can play number 10; a lot of ball players in the team. Every day in training I am always learning and trying to add it to my game. I haven’t looked that far ahead. I concentrate on every game and taking it game by game. I don’t know, I just have to wait and see. On the team’s behalf we are focusing more on ourselves and our performance.

“Hopefully if Chelsea slip up, they slip up but we have to make sure we win to keep up the title race. The games are coming thick and fast; we just have to prepare the same. We have got the momentum, we are confident now and hopefully we can keep up our winning streak. I’m just trying to do the best I can. If the team does well that is the main thing.”

Manchester City frontman Sergio Aguero’s current girlfriend Karina has become embroiled in a Twitter row with his former wife Gianinna Maradona.

The spat started after Karina’s daughter Sol allegedly fell out with Aguero and Maradona’s son Benjamin.

Karina tweeted at Maradona: “If you have something to say about my daughter then call and tell me. I can handle it and you can tarnish my name all you like, but don’t get involved with my daughter.”

Maradona then replied: “Children reflect the manners they have picked up from their parents and anyone who has had the privilege of personally knowing Benjamin can tell you what I am like as a mother. He is sweet, polite and a good friend, son and grandson.”

Pep Guardiola Preparing To Say “Goodbye” To Coaching

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has suggested that he could call time on his coaching career soon, declaring that “the process of [his] goodbye has already started”.

Pep Guardiola  is only six months into his three-year deal to manage the Citizens, having previously spent four seasons with Barcelona and three seasons with Bayern Munich.

The 45-year-old  appeared visibly irritated during his post-match media duties following City’s 2-1 triumph over Burnley on Monday afternoon and, speaking to US broadcaster NBC, he admitted that the issue of the end of his coaching career was on his mind.

“I will be at Manchester for the next three seasons, maybe more, but I am arriving at the end of my coaching career, of this I am sure,” he said.

“I will not be on the bench until I am 60 or 65 years old. I feel that the the process of my goodbye has already started.”

Real Madrid Interested In Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl

Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl is being linked with a move to Real Madrid, according to AS.

The 21-year-old Germany international only signed a new four-year deal earlier this season but his impressive form has continued to impress the watching scouts from Madrid.

Barcelona and Manchester City have also been linked with the gifted midfielder.

AS reported last week that Barcelona see Weigl as the ‘new Sergio Busquets’, with Luis Enrique currently having no options to serve as the Spaniard’s back-up.

However, the Spanish publication also noted that Pep Guardiola saw the player as a top priority for Manchester City’s 2017-18 campaign.

Real Madrid will have a big advantage when it comes to persuading Dortmund over a move as Zinedine Zidane is happy to wait until 2018 to sign the German.

The French boss currently has Casemiro in that role and is expected to add academy starlet Marcos Llorente to his squad in the summer following an impressive campaign on loan at Alaves.

AS suggests Weigl would be open to this option as he wants to continue his development at Signal Iduna Park – as he recently proved by signing a new long-term deal with the Bundesliga giants.

Rashford Has Words Of Praise For Mourinho After Inspiring Win

Featured Image

Marcus Rashford has praised Mourinho for his orders, which he followed when he was brought on, inspiring United to a 2-0 win.

The youngster came on before the hour mark and assisted the opener, with Mata getting the opening goal.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic added a late second for United against a West Ham side reduced to 10 men after just 15 minutes following Mike Dean’s decision to send off Sofiane Feghouli for a challenge on Phil Jones.

Asked what message Mourinho had given him before he went on, Rashford said: “He just told me to stay wide and try to isolate the full-back and we did in the end. I’m just following orders, of course!

“I’m very pleased with the three points.

“We’re in and around the top four. It’s very tight between sixth and second so we have to take it game by game and try to win every game.”
