Mourinho Hoping De Gea Doesn’t Claim United’s POTY Again

Featured Image

Mourinho says he is hoping David De Gea doesn’t win a fourth consecutive Player of The Year at the Manchester United awards in 2017.

The United manager believes that a goalkeeper claiming the accolade one more time indicates something is wrong at the club.

The Spanish shotstopper has not dropped his form as his other teammates struggled for form since the exit of Sir Alex Ferguson. He has won the award three years in a row.

He said: “I think when a goalkeeper is the player of the season it’s because something is wrong.

“Hopefully, David is not our Player of the Year again this season, but hopefully he keeps making important saves for us like he did in the last match [against West Ham].”

And while Mourinho is happy for De Gea getting recognised for his contribution, Mou feels it is time for change.

He added: “Of course, I would love goalkeepers to be recognised.

“I’d like them to win the Golden Ball and I’d like them to be the player of the season in the Premier League because goalkeepers are these lonely guys with a different shirt to everyone else. When they play phenomenally, people forget, and when they make a mistake, everyone remembers.

“But the reality is that when season after season the goalkeeper is player of the season, it means that something is wrong.”

De Gea has already admitted that he hopes to be snubbed this season, telling United Review : “I would prefer a striker or someone else to win it – someone who means that the team as a whole is playing well and scoring goals, because it is much better for the team that way.”

Diezani Forfeits $153m To Nigerian Govt

Featured Image

Former Nigerian oil minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke temporarily forfeited  $153.3 million to the Nigerian government on Friday, January 6, 2017.

This was sequel to an order by a Federal High Court  in Lagos.

The seized money, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was stolen from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and stashed in three banks in Nigeria, in US dollars and Naira.

Out of the loot, N23.4 billion was kept in Sterling Bank Plc. The sum of  N9.08 billion was kept in First Bank Plc and $5m in Access Bank Plc.

Justice  Muslim Hassan, who gave the order,  gave Sterling Bank and any other interested party 14 days to appear before him to prove the legitimacy of the monies, failing which the funds would be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria

The judge made the order in favour of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission which appeared before him today with an ex parte application seeking the temporary forfeiture of the funds.

In a nine-paragraph affidavit  by by EFCC investigator,  Moses Awolusi  and filed in support of the ex parte application,  the anti-graft agency discovered  how sometime in December 2014 Diezani invited a former Managing Director of Fidelity Bank Plc, Nnamdi Okonkwo, to her office. There  they hatched the plan of how  $153,310,000 would be moved from NNPC to Okonkwo to be saved for Diezani.

Diezani, according to Awolusi, instructed Okonkwo to ensure that the money was “neither credited into any known account nor captured in any transaction platforms” of Fidelity Bank.

Okonkwo accepted and implemented the deal leading to the movement of $153,310,000 from NNPC to Fidelity Bank.

He averred  further that two former Group Executive Directors of Finance and Account of NNPC, B.O.N. Otti and Stanley Lawson, helped Diezani to move the cash from NNPC, Abuja to the headquarters of Fidelity Bank in Lagos.

Awolusi said in a desperate bid to conceal the source of the money, Okonkwo, upon receiving it, instructed the Country Head of Fidelity Bank, Mr. Martin Izuogbe, to take $113,310,000 cash out of the money to the Executive Director, Commercial and Institutional Bank, Sterling Bank Plc, Lanre Adesanya, to keep.

He said the remaining $40m was taken in cash to the Executive Director, Public Sector Accountant, First Bank, Dauda Lawal, to keep.

The investigator said out of the $113,310,000 handed over to Adesanya, a sum of $108,310,000 was invested in an off balance sheet investment using Sterling Asset Management Trustees Limited.

The money was  was subsequently converted into N23.4 billion  and saved in Sterling Bank.

Awolusi said the EFCC had recovered the N23.4bn in draft and had registered it as an exhibit marked, EFCC 01.

The investigator said the EFCC had also recovered another $5m out of the money kept with the Managing Director of Access Bank Plc, Mr. Herbert Wigwe.

He said the $5m was recovered in draft and had been registered as an exhibit marked, EFCC 02.

According to him, First Bank’s Executive Director, Lawal had  similarly converted the $40m kept with him to N9,080,000,000.

Awolusi, however, said the EFCC had recovered that also in draft and registered it as Exhibit EFCC 03.

Moving the ex parte application today, the EFCC lawyer, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, urged Justice Hassan to order the temporary forfeiture of the funds to the Federal Government and to order Sterling Bank and Lawal, who were joined as defendants in the application, as well as any other interested parties, to appear in court within two weeks to show cause why the funds should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government.

Oyedepo, who said the application was brought pursuant to Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act No. 14, 2006 and Section 44(2)(‘) of the 1999 Constitution, said granting the application was in the best interest of justice.

Justice Hassan granted the order and adjourned till January 24, 2016 for the respondents to appear in court to show cause why the funds should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Bayer Leverkusen Prepared To Sell Javier Hernandez

Featured Image

Bayer Leverkusen have no intention of extending Javier Hernandez’s contract and are keen to offload him during the summer

Javier Hernandez is understood to be on the radar of a number of Premier League teams, including both Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller claims that no offers have have yet been received for the 28-year-old, but The Guardian suggests that Hernandez will likely be on his way over the next six months.

With his contract due to expire in June 2018, the Bundesliga outfit are said to be desperate to cash in on the £25m-rated striker, who has scored just five times in 15 league games this term after making an impressive start.

Hernandez, currently with the Leverkusen squad in the United States, has not found the net for his club side since the 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund on October 1.

Tony Pulis Confirms Saido Berahino’s Refusal To Sign A New Contract

Featured Image

West Brom manager Tony Pulis has confirmed Saido Berahino was offered a new deal this week which he has so far refused to sign.

Pulis admits he has grown weary of the long-running saga regarding Berahino’s future but is adamant West Brom are ready to move on with or without him.

“The club has offered him a new contract not just this week, but in previous months too, so they’ve been in negotiations with Saido, so we’ll just see how that pans out,” he said.

“The deals have been on the table for the boy and his agent – we’ll see how that pans out.

“Again, we’ve hit the funny month. He’s only got one more month left of this if he doesn’t sign, so that’s probably a bonus for me.

“If we sell him we will work very hard to get a replacement in. If we don’t sell him, we’ll have to work very hard to get him back to what he was 18 months ago.”

Zidane Poised To Equal Barcelona’s Unbeaten Run Record

Featured Image

Madrid’s Zinedine Zidane is happy to be closing in on Barcelona’s 39-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

Zidane has lead Madrid to a club best of 38 games unbeaten as they prepare to play Granada on Saturday.

The last time the Los Blancos lost was in the quarterfinal UCL loss to Wolfsburg in the first leg of the encounter.

“The work we put in each day, how we prepare for games, hopefully we can continue winning matches.

Jose Mourinho Admits Bastian Schweinsteiger Might Stay But Depay And Schneiderlin Will Leave

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho has confirmed Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay will both be allowed to leave this window if Manchester United receive the right offer – but they will be permanent deals not loans.

Jose Mourinho has confirmed neither player will feature against Reading tomorrow.

“I will allow them to leave the club if the right offer comes,” he said.

“I don’t think about them as options in this moment. In normal conditions they would be selected for the match tomorrow, and they aren’t, because we are waiting.

“A couple of weeks ago it looked like 100 per cent, and in this moment, looks like zero per cent because we don’t have any offer that is close to the quality that they have.”

Jose Mourinho has also confirmed that Bastian Schweinsteiger “wants to stay” at Manchester United, and may not leave the club in the January transfer window.

Schweinsteiger may play against Reading in the FA Cup tomorrow as Mourinho makes changes with a big week ahead and five games in 19 days.

Hull City Rejects West Ham’s £3 Million Bid For Robert Snodgrass

Featured Image

Hull have rejected a £3m bid from West Ham for midfielder Robert Snodgrass.

Snodgrass, 29, has been one of the top performers at struggling Hull this season and has scored seven goals with two assists.

Losing the Scotland international would obviously be a major blow to the Tigers, who have just named Marco Silva their new manager in the hope that he can mastermind Premier League survival.

Snodgrass had reportedly turned down the offer of new Hull contract, alerting several Premier League clubs to his possible availability during the transfer window.

West Ham have been active in the early stages of the transfer window but failed in bids to land strikers Jermain Defoe and Scott Hogan, and it now remains to be seen whether they will up their offer for Snodgrass.

The former Leeds and Norwich midfielder missed most of the 2014/15 campaign and half of the following season due to a serious knee injury

Klopp: Guardiola’s Anger Took Attention Away From My Rant

Featured Image

Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp believes Pep Guardiola’s anger reduced the attention on his post-match rant.

The City manager was quite angry after his team’s 2-1 win over Burnley, as he was prickly during his television interview and post-match media conference.

Liverpool, meanwhile, drew 2-2 at Sunderland, a result that ended a run of four straight victories, although Klopp’s post-match criticism of referee Anthony Taylor has not drawn the same publicity.

“It was strange for me,” Klopp said ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup third-round match at home to Plymouth Argyle.

“At the end we were all frustrated. You couldn’t expect the best performance of the season.

“We got a point but it felt like a defeat. I was glad that Pep then had his press conference and nobody spoke about mine!

“It was my first experience with a fixture like this. I couldn’t judge the game after the game.

“Sunderland did really well. It is still difficult to play them at home. [They are] well organised.”

Klopp is happy with Liverpool’s first half of the season, with the Reds second in the Premier League table on 44 points from 20 games.

The manager said: “When we met together in June we had no big dreams but we thought we could play a good season.

“We had no time to celebrate having 43 points [before the Sunderland game]. It is only a base for the rest of the season. We have to keep going.

“I told the boys after Sunderland: ‘So far, so good’. We have to keep on going. Not perfect, but we are all in a good way.

“What am I dreaming about? Success and staying healthy and fit. We had a lot of injuries but we coped with it OK.

“We know more about us. At the start of the season it was imagination. We thought it could work, now we know it could work.”

Pogba Has Much Admiration For Zidane

Featured Image

Paul Pogba has hailed Zinedine Zidane’s beautiful style as a player, saying he sees the Madrid coach as his idol.

The former France international helped France to the 1998 world cup, scoring two goals in the final.

Zidane, 44, guided Madrid to the Champions League last season and won the Club World Cup in 2016, but Pogba is still in awe of his talents as a player.

“I admire him a lot,” he told FIFA.com. “When I was younger, I was watching his videos, the way he was playing.

“I love big players, but there are some players who have something extra. On the pitch you have 11 players, in the squad, 22, and you see only one or two.

“You always see him doing something special, the way he’s playing, it’s beautiful to see. Ronaldinho was the same, these are players who have something special – he has that.

“I was always watching him. The ball was in one place but I was always looking for Zidane.”

Delegates of international airlines operators have rejected the Kaduna International Airport as alternative destination for Abuja flights as the federal government commences repairs on the runway of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

Preparation For The Closure Of Abuja Airport Begins

However, at a stakeholders meeting on Thursday, a representative of the international airlines operators, Mr. Osho Joseph said Kaduna international airport is not an option for them.

He said: “We believe Kaduna may be an alternative for local operators but definitely not for international airline operators. But we will get back on this.”

In his response, Senator Sirika said it is an economic decision on the part of all stakeholders in the sector to fly to Kaduna during the six weeks required for repairs.

“On whether some of the international airline won’t fly to Kaduna, that’s an economic decision.  But we will ensure they are comfortable if they chose to fly to Kaduna. Kaduna has the capacity to take jumbo jets and B777s.”

The minister added: “what I have is not final. We are still open to new knowledge on this matter. At the end of our preparation, stakeholders will be invited to inspect Kaduna to ask further questions.”

The minister assured that the federal government and the Kaduna State Government will provide “security within the airport, Kaduna Metropolitan City, enroute to railway station & along Kaduna- Abuja road.”

Naira Weakens Further Against 3 Major Currencies At Parallel Market

Thursday was not favourable for the Naira, as the local currency weakened against all three major currencies at the parallel market.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Naira lost three points to the dollar as it closed at N493 to a dollar, against N490 it traded on Wednesday, January 4, 2017.

Naira Trades At 494/$ On Christmas Day, From 268/$ On December 25, 2015

Also, the Pound Sterling and the Euro exchanged for N595 and N506, respectively.

At the Bureau De Change (BDC) window, the Naira traded at N399 to a dollar, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) controlled rate, while Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N598 and N510 respectively.

The Naira, however, remained stable at the interbank window as it exchanged for N305.00 to a dollar.

Traders at the market said that liquidity challenge was far from being resolved.

Lending voice on the development, Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, the President, Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), while decrying the spike in the exchange rate, commended the CBN for keeping it below N500 to a dollar.

In Nigeria: New ‘National Airline’ To Begin Operations In 2017

Featured Image

The Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has assured that Nigeria’s new national airline will commence scheduled flight operations before the end of 2017.

Buhari Approves Use Of Guns For Airport Security Personnel In Nigeria

Preparation For The Closure Of Abuja Airport Begins

Speaking with newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja on Wednesday, Sirika said the project would be private sector driven, and the federal government may own only three percent of the airline.

He said: “When we came in we were very clear on our targets and goals and what we set out to achieve, and we did say that Nigeria does need a national airline. The national airline will be one that the government will have no hand in; normally it can have three percent.”

“It will be private sector-led, private sector-driven. Except with the Ethiopian airline it has been proven that government doesn’t do well with this kind of venture.

“We are going to have a national carrier; it is on course and because it is a PPP thing, it has to go through IC and C, and also has to follow all the due process. So it is time-consuming but I hope very soon before the end of the year we will have a very strong viable national airline.”

The minister added that the carrier has become necessary, considering the size of the market available in west and central Africa — equivalent to that of the US and Europe.

He continued: “For me, if any air line will have the capacity to deploy several aircraft with seamless operation, non disruptive, provide the service, go the long haul, take advantage and give other international airlines a run for their money, we don’t need to get involved; it is because there is none.

“The Nigerian Airways used to do all of these, but in the wisdom of the then government they liberalised the sector, because of the absence of Nigeria’s capacity most of these airlines will come and leave as fast as they came in. But we are addressing all of these.

“We are going to establish this national carrier and it will give good service. This is the solution because Nigeria has the market, we are 180 million, we are sitting in West Africa and in the West African market we are 450 million and Nigeria is the major player.

“If you add the Central Africa, which is the Central belt, we are 600 million people, which is equivalent to the US market and also equal to the European market.”

Nigeria’s previous national carrier was the Nigeria Airways, wholly owned by the government and founded in 1958 after the dissolution of West African Airways Corporation, ceased operations in 2003.

Nigeria Resumes Payments Of N65,000 Monthly To Ex-Niger Delta Militants

Featured Image

The President Muhammadu Buhari led government has resumed payment of N65, 000 per month to ex-Niger Delta militants – as agreed under a 2009 amnesty programme – as it seeks to end vandalism in the Niger Delta region.

Reuters quoted  Piriye Kiyaramo, an officer in the government’s Amnesty Office as saying that:

“Two months of the ex-militants’ stipends were paid yesterday … The rest of their stipends will be paid later in batches by (central bank) CBN.”

Kiyaramo was quoted to have added that the paid stipends covered August and September.

Each former militant is entitled under the amnesty to 65,000 naira ($206.68) monthly plus job training.

The spokesman for the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Eric Omare, which represents the Delta’s biggest ethnic group, said former militants had complained to the region’s top negotiator handling talks with the government about payment delays.

It would be recalled, President Muhammadu Buhari had met Niger Delta leaders and representatives for the militants in November to discuss their demands but little progress has emerged publicly since then.

The militants and residents who sympathise with them say they want a greater share of Nigeria’s oil wealth to go to the impoverished region.

The president had also slashed the allocation to the amnesty programme in the controversial 2016 budget, but he tripled the allocation in the 2017 budget following unrest and negotiations in the region
