Callum Backs DeGale To Beat Jack

Featured Image

Mandatory challenger Callum Smith has backed James DeGale to beat Badou Jack, dye to his superiority.

Smith who will be watching from the sidelines is mandated to challenge the winner of the unification bout.

Asked if DeGale will win, unbeaten Smith told Sky Sports: “Yes he should, and I believe he will. Two fighters at their very best – James is the better man. He’s competed at the higher level, professional and amateur.

“But nothing is straightforward and Jack is a very good champion. If DeGale isn’t on his game then Jack will cause him problems.

“But I’d like James to win. I know him outside the ring and you always back your own.

“Me vs DeGale is a bigger fight than me vs Jack, so I will be rooting for him, and I do think he will deliver.

“My main goal when I became professional was to become a world champion, and I said I’d beat whoever it took to get there. That hasn’t changed. DeGale or Jack – I believe I’ll beat either of them to achieve my dream.”

Chavez Up Next For Canelo

Featured Image

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has confirmed his next fight will be against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. but will have to weigh in 9.5lbs heavier.

Alvarez will be boxing above the middleweight limit for the first time, as the May 6 fight between the Mexicans has been contracted for 164.5lbs.

Canelo, a former WBC belt holder was criticised , because his two victories in that decision against Cotto and Khan , we’re contested at catch – weights between the unofficial limits.

After vacating the belt, Alvarez claimed the WBO light – middleweight belt by beaten Liam Smith.

A fight against middleweight king Gennady Golovkin is still on the cards.

Chavez (50-2-1, 32 KOs), for his part, has boxed his last five fights above 167.5lbs so faces a notable cut in weight. He has missed weight several times before in his veteran career.

There is no confirmed location for Alvarez vs Chavez yet.

Bamford Another Player To Be Called Back From Loan, By Chelsea

Featured Image

Chelsea have recalled another player from loan, with striker Bamford returning from his loan spell at Burnley.

Burnley made the announcement after securing a 1-0 win over Southampton , with the Chelsea striker omitted from the lineup.

The striker featured just six times in the league for Burnley, prompting a callback by Chelsea.

The announcement comes after reports of a row between Conte and Costa, but the manager insists he is missing the clash against Leicester due to an injury.

Bamford sparkled during a loan spell at Middlesbrough in 2014-15, winning Championship Player of the Season for that term, but his career has stagnated during other temporary stints since.

NNPC: Nigeria’s Refineries Resume Production Of Kerosene, Diesel

Featured Image

The three refineries in Kaduna, Port Harcourt, and Warri of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) have resumed production of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK), otherwise known as diesel and kerosene respectively.

This disclosure was made by the Managing Director of the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC), Engr. Solomon Ladenegan, while speaking on the production level of the Warri refinery.

Ladenegan also said the plant had been doing well since the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) was revved up on Saturday, 7 January 2017.

He added that the refinery resumed production last Saturday at about 10:22hrs, with the plant’s CDU functioning.

The refinery MD stated that the plant now refines 2 million litres of kerosene and 3 million litres of diesel daily.

“This morning, we have pumped the products to PPMC and they have started loading. They are going to load up to 1 million litres of DPK and AGO. The products are there in the tank and we are doing everything to get them to the market,” Ladenegan said.

The resumption of refining of AGO and DPK is expected to balance the disequilibrium in demand and supply of the white products being experienced in recent times in parts of the Country.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC), Dr Bafred Enjugu, said Port Harcourt Refinery was producing 3 million litres of AGO daily, in addition to millions of DPK being churned out by the refinery daily.

Enjugu enthused that his operators were thrilled having rehabilitated the old Port Harcourt Refinery where production of AGO was being carried out by themselves without foreign expertise deployment.

Meanwhile, the Kaduna Refinery has also roared into action, producing millions of litres of white products to ease out the situation in supply and distribution of petroleum products nationwide.

Wenger Wants Ozil To Score More Goals

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger insists that for Mesut Ozil to reach his full potential at Arsenal, he must score more goals.

The midfielder already has nine goals in 23 appearances in all competitions, which is his best tally so far in a Gunners jersey.

Wenger wants to see more from Ozil on the field, insisting he is not living up to his true talent.

“I think what you want of him is to score goals,” Wenger told reporters.

“We all feel certainly that there is still a gap there between what he can do. He is moving in the right way but always, from such a talent, you are maybe a little bit unjust because you always want more.

“You feel there is no limitation in his game and so you always say: ‘come on give us more’ because you always have feeling he can do more.

“We are all human beings who can improve every day. The problem is that we have to first realise if we want more, how we get more and then after, do it.”

Klopp: Liverpool Looking Forward To Sunday’s Match

Featured Image

Liverpool will visit Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday and Jurgen Klopp says his men are not afraid.

United have won nine matches in a row and have not lost 15, however, Liverpool have struggled in recent outings, drawing against Sunderland and Plymouth Argyle, before losing to Southampton.

However, Klopp is excited about the challenge awaiting his team, saying they had nothing to worry about.

“There is nothing to fear. What could I fear? At this moment, anything is possible,” the German told reporters.

“It could be that United are not at their best level on Sunday, just nobody knows about it yet.

“I don’t fear things like this. I’ve had enough time in the game to realise what happens.

“At this moment I’m 100 per cent positive, absolutely looking forward to the game.”

Klopp’s men suffered a 1-0 loss at Southampton in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final in their most recent outing on Wednesday.

But the former Borussia Dortmund coach said he likes that his team get a chance to put that behind them just days later.

“I’ve had so many defeats in my life, especially as a player – as a manager too, that I really know defeat is not the problem,” Klopp said.

“Your reaction to it is the problem. We’ve had four days to react from a really bad game on our side by playing in a very important game. I love it.

“That’s how football should be – you can react immediately. So let’s think about this and not what could happen if we can’t do it.”

Wenger: Cazorla Will Miss Another 10 Weeks

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger has revealed that Santi Cazorla will miss a further 10 weeks of action due to an ankle injury.

The Spain international has made just 11 appearances this season, having been sidelined since October.

The 32-year-old is set to be out for more weeks, with Wenger hoping he can return late in the season.

“He’s far from starting to run again,” Wenger told a news conference.

“He had a little procedure, yes, but we have a meeting with the medical people to see what it was.

“Yeah, I hope so [that he’ll be available for the run-in].

“Because once you start to go out [running outside] you have to count six weeks’ preparation. At the moment he’s not at that level, so let’s hope he can come back in the next three or four weeks on the pitch.”

Arsenal are fifth in the Premier League table ahead of a trip to strugglers Swansea City on Saturday.

The Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, says the corporation has resumed loading of petroleum products in all its depots nationwide.

Ughamadu made the disclosure in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

He said that the resumption of activities at the depots across the country followed the suspension of strike by the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers.

He further said that the current petroleum products, stocked for supply by the corporation, would be sufficient for over 37 days.

According to him, with the resumption in production of diesel and kerosene by the nation’s three refineries, Nigerians can be assured that the current seamless flow of petroleum products will be sustained.

Lyon Make Memphis Depay Their Top Transfer Target

Featured Image

Lyon coach Bruno Genesio has confirmed that the club have made Manchester United flop Memphis Depay their top target for the January transfer window.

Depay has been told that he is free to leave Old Trafford this month having made just one start across all competitions under Jose Mourinho this season.

Everton had been linked with the 22-year-old Netherlands international, but Lyon have emerged as the front-runners for his signature and, despite already seeing one bid turned down, the Ligue 1 outfit are still eager to sign the winger.

“Things are progressing. We keep on working. It takes time, discussions, because recruiting a player now is not easy. I trust the president to get things done quickly. I have put a priority on Memphis Depay,” he told reporters.

“He is a powerful player who scores goals and is good at set pieces. Rachid [Ghezzal] has left for the African Nations Cup and Memphis knows how to play out wide. He is a young player with great international experience and a lot of potential. This is my number one priority.

“I’m a fan of this player, he has an interesting profile for us, especially as we risk losing Rachid at the end of the season. But there are several things to consider, including the price.”

Lyon’s initial offer for Depay is thought to have been substantially below United’s £15m asking price.

Hull City Sign Strikers Oumar Niasse And Evandro

Featured Image

English premier leave struggles Hull City have completed the double signing of strikers Oumar Niasse and Evandro, the club has announced.

Hull City have scored just 17 times in their 20 league games this season, and new manager Marco Silva identified strengthening his attack as the top priority upon his arrival at the KCOM.

Niasse, 26, joins on loan until the end of the season from Everton, where he had failed to settle following his £13.5m arrival a year ago. The deal is believed to include an option to buy over the summer.

Evandro, meanwhile, previously played under Silva at Estoril and joins on a two-and-a-half year contract for an undisclosed fee – thought to be around £500,000 – subject to international clearance.

Both players could go straight into the lineup for the Tigers’ home game with Bournemouth tomorrow afternoon.

Blood Thirsty Nigerian Police On RampageBayo Oluwasanmi

I knew this was going to happen sooner than later. Now that Aso Rock and the President’s men, the senators, the reps, and the judges are feeling the scorching heat from Sahara, they are crying and acting like puppies being taken away from their mother.

This piece was written by Bayo Oluwasanmi. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Wednesday, January 11, 2017, SaharaReporters (SR) Publisher Omoyele Sowore was waylaid at GRA Ikeja by Lekan Fatodu and his friend “Andre.” According to Sowore, the two men tried to kill him but the attempt was foiled by the public. He was later taken to “F” precinct of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on a trumped up charges of “criminal defamation.”  “My attack by Fatodu was organised with the police, but as they were unable to arrest me directly,” says Sowore, “he was given the cover to carry out an attack that would give the police their needed tonic to take vengeance on me,” Sowore recalls.

Lagos Police Releases Sahara Reporters Publisher Without Charges

“I was asked to sign for my bail on Self-recognizance, but I declined, insisting I had not been arrested by the police and were that the case, that I preferred to be booked and shown an arrest warrant. After a short argument, I was let go without signing a bail bond, but was asked to return to the Panti Police station on Thursday at 2p.m.” says Sowore. Sowore has since been released.

The illegal arrest of Sowore by the NPF on fabricated charges by miscreants underlies the brutality of a moribund police force and primitive policing system under a democratic government. The police are the closest agency of the government that citizens are most likely to see and have contact with. Every society uses police to control crime and contribute to public order. The police are subject to the rule of law rather than the wishes of a powerful leader or party. The police can intervene in the life of citizens only under limited and carefully controlled circumstances. The police are publicly accountable.

However, a defining characteristic of police is their mandate to legally use force and to deprive citizens of their liberty. This power is fiercely opposed from those who are subject to it. This latitude is an incentive for great temptations for abuse. Yet, the police are important to maintaining civil law and order. Therefore, a delicate balance between liberty and order must be maintained in a democratic policing. Ironically, police are both a major support and a major threat to a democratic society. When police operate under the rule of law, they certainly protect democracy by their example of respect for the law and by suppressing crime.

Nigeria is a nation at war with herself. Nigeria occupies a pride of place among failed nations battling diverse and different crimes, vices, political unrest, economic recession, and social malaise. That the NPF is moribund is an understatement. That the rank and file of NPF comprise crooks, thieves, aiders, abettors, charlatans, illiterates, swindlers, and barbaric species of homo sapiens is to be stingy with the truth. That NPF is professionally efficient as death inducers, killer squads, is mincing words. That the NPF must kill to stay relevant and sustain their brutality, is a short changed description.

The only badge worn by men and women of the force is a badge of dishonour earned from killings, woes, anguish, sufferings, and sorrows caused directly or indirectly to innocent Nigerians. Samples of NPF as bloodthirsty and killer corps from the archives: March 30, 2001, The News reported that on February 7, 2001, Corporal Rabiu Bello of Kaduna State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), asked one Haliru Slau Agaba, a young apprentice, to buy him a stick of cigarette. Haliru told Bello he didn’t have money to buy any cigarette. Bello shot him dead.

According to PANA Press in March 4, 2001, three corps – Benhamin Oyakhire, Jimo Michael, and Gerson Soba – erected illegal road block. They robbed traders of amount totaling $100,000. As if that was  not enough, two of the traders were set ablaze to hide the crime. In March 2001, the PM News reported one Mrs Iroh, a Lagosian, while “roasting plantain by the roadside, was killed by a stray bullet from the police. In 1999, a Nigerian star athlete Dele Udoh, based in the US, was mercilessly gunned down by the police in Lagos. Fuji star artist, Adewale Ayuba, was shot in the leg by the police for “refusing to give a reasonable settlement.” The list goes on.

I can assure Sowore that this is not going to be his last encounter with the NPF. The NPF is on a rampage to clamp down hard and even eliminate any powerful and influential critic of the barons of corruption industry in Nigeria. Any given opportunity will send NPF into a rage to kill. The big whales and sharks of corruption in Nigeria are working feverishly behind the scenes, and are using the NPF as a cover to carry out their clandestine cleansing of critics that inform and educate the Nigerian people by providing timely, accurate, and damaging reports of their corrupt activities. Because Sowore enjoys high visibility and a recognised name as Publisher of SR, he would have been quietly and easily declared missing by the NPF. And you know what that means in the vocabulary of the Nigeria police. Can you imagine how many unknown and unheard Nigerians that have been declared missing during police encounters and in police custody? Many.

To be sure, the NPF is not really a police system. It doesn’t operate according to the rule of law and is not accountable to the Nigerian public. It’s a trigger-happy force. The modus operandi of the NPF is summary punishment, uses overt surveillance, stop, search, and arrest innocent Nigerians. With the NPF, crime is on the increase because of its inability to respond effectively. The NPF incompetence, misconduct, and corruption have fueled, rather than reduce crime and violence. Hence relations between the NPF and Nigerians continue to be characterised by suspicion and mutual hostility.

The NPF bleeds from shortage of manpower, poor salary, and benefits, use of outdated weapons, lack of adequate and modern telecommunication equipment, lack of vehicles, shortage of funds for operation, poor training, ill-oriented, ill-motivated, corruption, poor accommodation, political interference and poor recruitment practices. Internal and external accountability is weak, ineffective, or non-existent. Citizens’ contacts with the NPF are almost involuntary, restricted to law enforcement encounters.

Nigerian society is corrupt. The NPF is a product of a corrupt society and system. The Police Service Commission and other law enforcement agencies have been corrupted by politicians and hard criminals like Fatodu. Decentralisation of the Nigeria policing system is clearly badly needed. Pumping millions of naira into the NPF is not the solution. It is like a man who suffers from headache but was recommended to get a new hair cut and wear a new hat. NPF as an institution needs urgent dismantling. We need local and state police to shape the institution into a 21st-century institution capable of preventing and fighting crime.

Through superb investigative journalism and thought-provoking articles, SR has been able to dramatise and accurately portray the fate that awaits Nigerians if the corrupt ruling class continues to operate as business as usual: siege, enslavement, and a very close shave. SR has uniquely demonstrated the axiom to stay true and pure of the time honoured journalism creed: see it clearly, show it creatively, and say it constantly. Despite verbal attacks on Sowore and several attempts to yank SR off the radar by the coalition of thieves ruling Nigeria, SR has managed to stay true to its editorial core values and mission: “…of citizen journalists to report ongoing corruption and government malfeasance in Africa…”

Is there any hope for this lawless and hopeless nation?

Mourinho Envisions Pogba As Future United Captain

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho has backed Manchester United midfielder, Paul Pogba to become a future captain at the Old Trafford.

The former Juventus star had a poor start to life at United, but recovered his form to help United to sixth.

Mourinho feels the 23-year-old has all the characteristics to be United captain one day.

“I think he has. He has the charisma, the ambition, the mentality and he’s a good professional, so I think he has,” he said.

“Being so young and having all the ingredients, I think he can do it.”

Pogba was criticised for the way he started the campaign, but he has settled and formed a good partnership with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

While he said the France international was performing well, Mourinho simply wants consistency from Pogba.

“It’s not fair to say that a player has to be dominant, though,” he said.

“He is playing amazingly well, no doubt about it, but the team is also playing well.

“What I expect is the team to play well and Paul to be at the level he’s playing at regularly.”

United are on a 15-match unbeaten run in all competitions and host Liverpool on Sunday.

Manchester United To Activate De Gea’s Contract Extension

Featured Image

Manchester United are reportedly set to activate a one-year extension in David de Gea’s contract.

The goalkeeper has two years left on his current deal, but The Sun say United will extend it until 2020 and give him a pay rise to make him one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League.

Real Madrid have been long-term admirers of De Gea and came agonisingly close to sealing a deal in 2015 but the move fell through.

A United insider said: “The club are looking to exercise their option to extend David’s deal this summer.

“He will be given a pay increase. He has consistently been one of the best goalkeepers in the world for a number of years now.

“There shouldn’t be any problems, but clubs have been sniffing around him for a number of years now.”
