Bolasie: Zaha Is England’s Loss

Featured Image

Yannick Bolasie says England has lost a gem of a player in Wilfried Zaha, as the winger opted to play for Ivory Coast.

Gareth Southgate tried to convince the Crystal Palace man to play for England, but the winger picked the elephants instead.

Bolasie, who played alongside Zaha at Crystal Palace, believes he is starting to show the form that got him signed by United in 2013.

Bolasie told Radio 5 live: “Wilf is getting back to the level [he was at] before he left for United.

“Now he’s got the goals and the assists and I do think England have missed out there.”

Zaha has scored four times in 19 Premier League appearances for the Eagles this season, and Bolasie backed him to turn into one of Europe’s best players.

“I do think the penny has dropped for him and, development-wise, I think with the right coach the guy’s got ability of someone like Neymar,” said Bolasie. “I’d go that far.

“Neymar’s at Barca so it’s hard to compare, but the ability he’s got, it’s up there.”

Cech Wants Arsenal To Keep Scoring

Featured Image

Arsenal played out a 4-0 win over Swansea City, a result that pleased Petr Cech, who believes every goal scored is important.

Chelsea are top of the table and lead the pack by seven points. They also lead in goal difference of 30.

Arsenal are third on the table and have a goal difference of 26, and Cech is glad they’re staying on track in terms of goals scored.

He said: “Every time you can score more goals you should try to do so.

“That is because every goal will be important when you see how tight it is in the top five places.

“Every goal might count so we try to make sure, when we can, to continue to search for more goals. And we wanted to make sure that at 3-0 and 4-0 we didn’t concede.”

Koeman Hails Everton’s Perfect Mauling Of Manchester City

Featured Image

Ronald Koeman has praised Everton’s showing against Manchester City, as they claimed a 4-0 win.

Lukaku opened the scoring for Everton, with Mirallas getting the second in the second half. Davies scores the third goal and new signing, Lookman, scored his first goal for the club.

Koeman is pleased with the win, as it cements their spot in seventh on the table.

“You cannot plan a game like this,” Koeman told BBC Sport. “It is always difficult against City, they play great football but the second half was perfect in every aspect.

“We scored at the right time in the first half and then to score straight after half-time made it very difficult for them.

“I think it is a big compliment to Everton – the organisation defensively. It makes the final result and the way we played perfect.”

Joe Hart Hails Incredible Donnarumma

Featured Image

On loan Manchester City goalkeeper at Torino, Joe Hart has praised his Serie A counterpart, Milan goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma as one who is of incredible talent.

The 17-year old sensation has been on everyone’s radar since breaking into the first team at Milan in October 2015. He has remained a permanent fixture in the starting XI.

Donnarumma has been seen as a replacement for Buffon in the national team and Hart is in awe of his talents and has huge expectations for him.

“Donnarumma is incredible, full stop,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport. “The fact he’s only 17 years old is almost irrelevant and just adds extra gloss to the situation.

“You can tell he’s at the top because he trains at the top. Age can only make him better, but he acts as if he’s already got a long career behind him.”

360NoBS Film Review: Three Wise Men

Featured Image

The trailer seemed tacky. The premise, instantly unoriginal, and laughably desperate, spoke of one of the oldest tricks in comedy. Three pathetic old geezers, robbed of their hunger for the good time by the sobering realities of real life, embarking on one last hurrah. Mr Ibu would be gold in this. Perhaps Nkem Owoh. Or Chinwetalu Agu if you can get him.

The producer of Three Wise Men, Opa Williams, an industry titan and godfather if ever there was one, fancies a more prestigious picture, one that will drag people out of their homes, and into the cinemas. So he does something interesting. Williams casts the lovable and relatively mainstream trio of Richard Mofe-Damijo, Zachee Orji and Victor Olaotan as the long suffering, old time revellers who get a new lease of life when they are finally awarded their gratuities.

Each man becomes the recipient of 30million Naira and for them, old age must come with urge incontinence, the kind that makes them want to blow every last Naira on booze, bimbos and hare brained schemes.

The women in their lives are there to either aid or talk them out of this sudden wealth induced dementia. Timi (Zack Orji) is married to a prayer warrior (Tina Mba) who despite her energetic supplications fails to keep her hubby on the straight and righteous path. Ebele Okaro is endlessly devoted to her Tobore (Olaotan) but even her righteous love is not enough to stop him from straying, especially when the de facto leader of the threesome, Irikefe (Mofe-Damijo) makes quite the convincing case with his care free lifestyle. As the smooth operator and convener of this merry band of brothers, Mofe-Damijo is clearly having the time of his life in the name of work.

Irikefe has resigned to a lifetime of pleasure seeking after suffering three failed marriages and sweet talks his more straight leaning colleagues to join him in his debauchery. Three Wise Men is an often funny and mostly annoying chronicle of their antics. They hook up with girls young enough to call them daddy and transfer all their retirement energies to expectedly disastrous results.

Three wise men

The Three Wise Men – From Left to Right: Zack Orji, Richard Mofe-Damijo and Victor Olaotan

Directed in a by the numbers manner by Patience Oghre, best known for her work on television’s Dear Mama, Three Wise Men is an unholy pastiche of several not so funny scenes. It plays like a nineties Nollywood movie what with its cast and leaden story. The movie’s only saving grace is the commitment of the leading men and the opportunity to view respected actors make fools of themselves.

But acting commitment alone never was enough to sell a movie. And even in this case, this simple pleasure falls short repeatedly. Ebele Okaro and Tina Mba, though fine character actresses, are just sitting idle and doing things that films expect women to do; which is nag, pray and cry. They fail to move the plot along or have any real reason for being there.

Zachee Orji is his usual stolid self, showing little in terms of genuine emotion and Victor Olaotan is miscast as an everyman type. He’s probably gotten so comfortable playing patriarch Ade Williams on Tinsel that the chance of going against type which Three Wise Men presented must have appealed to the actor in him. Still, Olaotan does not quite settle into the role and is uncomfortable especially when his lines are being delivered in Pidgin English.

This leaves Richard Mofe Damijo with the responsibility of carrying the entire film. Naturally too, as he is the genuine movie star of the bunch and his charisma has seen him through reams of unimpressive tapes. He comes through here, even when he appears to be overdoing it. The plot is nonsensical really but as the tattoo sporting, Instagram posting, alcohol guzzling Niger Delta senior citizen whose children are about to stage a major rebelling, Mofe-Damijo manages to keep viewers seated through the entire proceedings.

What he does not and cannot do however (indeed no human can) is save the film from an outrageous final ten minutes, so out of pace, devoid of context and tackily joined to the final cut. It is a wonder how anyone with any power okayed that ending and Oghre loses points for even considering that a deeming end for her film. This one makes the curious ending of Kunle Afolayan’s The CEO seem perfectly reasonable and leaves a black mark on the entire Nollywood culture.

After running out of steam going around in circles, the movie goes out with a hiss as it suffers a tonal, shift by going the lazy, senseless route of incorporating religious themes and preachy resolutions. Picture and sound are fine but this outing is such an unimpressive one for Patience Oghre, an actress who graced the screens about a decade ago on the soap Candle light before building a durable career behind the scenes. Three Wise Men suggests maybe, she should stick to television.

MMM: SEC Warns Nigerians Against Investing In Bitcoins

Featured Image

The Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC, has warned Nigerians patronising Ponzi Schemes against investing in digital currencies such as Bitcoin, Swisscoin and OneCoin.

In a public notice on its website on Thursday, SEC stated that none of the individuals or companies promoting the use of the currencies is recognised by it or any other regulatory agency in Nigeria.

The commission stressed the risks and possibilities of investors losing their money to such investments being promoted by these companies, including fraudulent pyramid schemes.

The warning comes in the wake of the return of Nigeria’s leading Ponzi scheme, MMM Nigeria, which had earlier placed a one-month ban on all withdrawals from December 13, 2016.

Upon resumption, the scheme introduced the use of bitcoins as part of its payment options, citing bitcoin’s steady growth in value as a reason for participants to adopt the currency.

However, SEC urged the general public not to throw caution to the wind with regard to digital currencies as a vehicle of investments.

“The public should also be aware that any investment opportunities promoted by these persons, companies or entities are likely to be of a risky nature with a high risk of loss of money, while others may be outright fraudulent pyramid schemes,” the regulatory body noted.

“Given that these instruments and the persons, companies or entities that promote them have neither been authorized, nor any guidelines/regulations developed for them by any of the regulatory authorities in Nigeria, there is no protection available to users or investors in these virtual currencies from financial losses if the virtual currencies fail or the companies promoting them go out of business.

“The public and consumers of financial services are further advised that before making any investment or entering into any financial services transaction they should ascertain that the entity with whom the investment or transaction is being made is authorized by the commission or other financial services regulatory authority as applicable to provide such services.”

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force has said it does not have any directive from the government to arrest operators or participants of the MMM, a Ponzi scheme.

It also explained that it would not go after operators or participants in the scheme because no one had complained about being swindled by the programme.

NASU, SSANU To Begin Warning Strike On Monday

Featured Image

Non-academic unions in the Nigerian universities say they will on Monday embark on a five-day warning strike over the inability of the Federal Government to implement the 2009 Agreements with the unions.

The unions are the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the unions in a statement stated that the warning strike became necessary in order for government to fully implement the 2009 FGN/Non-Teaching Staff Unions Agreements it freely entered into with the unions.

JAC said that a letter of the warning strike signed by Mr Samson Ugwoke, SSANU President, Mr Sani Suleiman, President of NAAT and Chris Ani, NASU President had been send to the Minister of Education.

JAC said that the letter was also copied to the Minister Labour and Employment, Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission and President of Nigeria Labour Congress.

The statement quoted the committee as saying that “the University system is challenged by poor governance and administrative lapses which needs to be addressed holistically.

“Poor funding of our universities, shortfall in payment of staff salaries, increasing corruption in the university system should be addressed.’’

It also listed as among the problems that required attention of the government was inadequate physical infrastructure and abandoned projects which they said had reduced the capacity and output of its members.

Other areas were lack of adequate teaching and learning facilities which had reduced the productivity of members and the non-payment of Earned Allowances being product of the 2009 Agreement, among others.

Meantime, JAC had petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari over what it described as the “continued industrial unrest at Federal University of Technology, FUTA, Akure: the need for decisive government action concerning the university’s Vice Chancellor.”

In a letter to President Buhari, JAC said that arising from issues of serious disagreement between labour unions in the institution and the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adebiyi Gregory Daramola, there had been continuous industrial unrest.

“It is noteworthy that the university has been experiencing serious industrial disharmony since Oct. 6, 2016 as a result of workers demand for the removal of the VC on grounds of alleged corruption and maladministration.

“Sir, it is on record that the Vice Chancellor has a case to answer at the EFCC. He is however yet to be arraigned. Indeed, the allegation of corruption against the VC is substantial.

“It is the candid opinion of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) unions of NAAT, NASU and SSANU that a government which is bent on fighting corruption in all ramifications should not turn a blind eye under these circumstances.

“So, it will be in the interest of justice and industrial harmony that the VC be prosecuted by the relevant government agencies so that normalcy can be restored in the university,’’ it said.

Borno State Govt Bans Sales Of Charcoal, Firewood

Featured Image

The Borno State Government has banned the sale of charcoal and firewood on major streets in the metropolis to prevent pollution in the city.

The ban was made known in a statement issued by Alhaji Kakashehu Lawan, the Commissioner for Justice, on Sunday and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri.

Borno Prohibits Prostitution, Sale Of Alcohol

Lawan said that sellers of the commodities were expected to relocate to a new market on Damboa Road designated for the sale of charcoal and firewood.

“Sales of charcoal and firewood along major streets is hereby banned.

“All those engaged in the business should relocate to the Charcoal and Firewood market along Damboa Road in Maiduguri,” he said.

The commissioner further gave a two-week notice to all sellers to either relocate to the market or face prosecution.

He said that the operation of charcoal and firewood sellers on major streets had constituted environmental hazard in the state.

“Government action is based on the fact that the sales of these items on our streets has become a source of pollution as well as health hazard to the public,” Lawan said.

He said that government had also concluded plans to demolish all illegal structures and shanties in markets across the state.

“All illegal markets are hereby banned and owners are advised to relocate to recognised markets like Bolori, Abbaganaram, Gamboru among others.

“They have two weeks within which to relocate as such structures will be demolished in the next two weeks,” Lawan said.

He explained that government action was based on the fact that those places were being used as hideouts for criminals.

“Such places not only deface the environment but often serve as hideouts or spots for suicide bombers, criminals or criminal activities,” Lawan said.

Super Rich Churches In Nigeria Must Pay Tax – Sheikh Abdur-Rahman Ahmad

Featured Image

The Chief Missioner Ansar-ud-Deen Nigeria, Sheikh Abdur-Rahman Ahmad, has said that super rich churches in the country must pay tax, adding that religious leaders in churches and mosques are answerable to God and the government.

In an interview with The Punch, the Islamic cleric revealed that a certain law was enacted during the Goodluck Jonathan administration, regarding the church tax issue.

When asked: Do you think the regulations of the Financial Reporting Council are specifically targeted at churches?

He said: I think nothing can be farther from the truth. Arguments or thoughts like that are very reckless, illogical and unfair. I am not a political apologist and I do not belong to any political party. This was a law that was enacted and passed during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan when a Christian, Senator David Mark, was the Senate President. At the time the law was passed nobody said anything; there was no complaint or call for public hearing. There was no apparent criticism of the regulations. It is now only when the implementation was about to start that people are now saying various things. It is satanic to read religion into the codes. Let us look at the fact of the matter; there is the need for transparency and accountability where public funds are involved. In churches and mosques – and churches to a very large extent – public funds are being expended.

It is common knowledge that some of these churches are super-rich with their total worth running into billions of naira, even billions of dollars. Some of them also have businesses. If they are involved in businesses, running universities and expensive secondary schools among other business ventures, then it is only fair for them to be taxed as other Nigerians are taxed. Religion should not be a shield and nobody should hide under the cover of religion to evade tax. Also, it is said that every Sunday there are a number of bullion vans that go to certain churches to take up offerings (money contributed by congregants) and that’s a lot of money.

It is not a bad idea at all that the government should look into this money. It is charity; even funds of charities should be scrutinised. It should be seen that people are giving freely because they are cheerful givers and the question is: is the money used for the purpose it is meant for? I don’t think that should create any problem for either the mosque or the church. It is about transparency. It is about accountability. It is about responsibility. The only area that may appear contentious (in the FRC codes) is when government wants to directly regulate the administration of religions; that will be contentious.

The Nigerian Government has turned down the conditions presented before it by the Bring Back Our Girls group (BBOG) to join in the search for the missing Chibok girls in Sambisa Forest.

The rejection was made known in a letter addressed to the convener of the group, Mrs. Obiageli Ezekwesili, which was made available to the media on Sunday.

Chibok Girls: BBOG Reacts To Invitation By Nigerian Govt To Search Sambisa Forest

In the letter dated January 14, and signed by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the government said it was unable to postpone the trip as scheduled.

It reads: “Thank you for your letter, dated January 13, which is in response to ours of January 11, requesting that we change the date of the proposed guided tour of the North-East to accommodate a Pre-Tour Meeting between your organisation and some top officials of the Federal Government.

“We have also noted the conditions you gave for embarking on the trip which include the said Pre-Tour Meeting and the retraction of some remarks allegedly made by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, which the #BBOG finds to be slanderous.

“We regret, however, to inform you that we are unable to postpone the trip as scheduled. ’’

The government insisted the team would proceed on the trip on Monday as scheduled because of the narrow window available to have a good weather on the day.

Bayern sit at the top of the Bundesliga before the season resumes, three points clear of clearest rivals Rasenball Leipzig whom they beat 3-0 in the final game of 2016. The German top flight resumes on Friday when Carlo Ancelotti’s men take on Freiburg, who are currently ninth.

The group, in their letter dated January 13th and signed by Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, stated that:

“We had an emergency meeting of our Movement to discuss your invitation to embark on a ‘guided tour’ of the Nigerian Air Force Command (Yola) and Sambisa Forest with officials of the government.”

“However, before proceeding with further discussion on the proposed visit, we propose a pre-tour meeting to discuss pertinent issues that will help inform our decision to proceed.

“We believe that this prior meeting would help provide first-hand knowledge of, and answers to questions that our movement wishes to raise ahead of the guided visit.”

The group proposed that participants at the meeting include the National Security Adviser, the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Army Staff, and the Chief of Air Force.

The group accused the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, of endorsing a statement by “a certain group” visiting him which described the BBOG movement as engaging in “social media terrorism”.

“It is puzzling that the reported said visit happened less than 48 hours before our Movement received your letter asking us to travel in the company of the same Chief of Army Staff to Sambisa Forest,” the group stated.

“We demand therefore that ahead of the pre-tour meeting we have proposed herein, that the Chief of Army Staff retracts and apologizes for endorsing such slanderous attacks against our Movement #BringBackOurGirls and specifically at some of our leaders.

“Such a step would communicate that it is with goodwill that the Federal Government is asking us to entertain the visit proposed in your letter.”

The letter, dated January 11 and signed by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, and addressed to Oby Ezekwesili, the convener of the group, was made available to the media on Saturday.

In the letter, the government asked the BBOG to nominate three of its members to join on the guided trip on January 16 in recognition of the unwavering commitment of the group to the release of the girls.

“The trip being planned by the military will see the ministers of defence and information, the Chief of Air Staff and Chief of Army Staff joining the invited BBOG members and a select group of journalists.

“They will first go to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Command Centre in Yola to witness firsthand the efforts being made to search for the girls by NAF and then join the day and night sorties with the BAF to the Sambisa Forest.

“Please note that due to limited seats on the search plane, only two of the invited BBOG members will join the NAF sorties.

“After the sorties, the team will return to Yola for bidding by the NAF on their daily search for the girls as well as all those who have been abducted by Boko Haram.

“Departure is scheduled for 8.30a.m. at the Air Force wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Monday the Jan. 17, 2017,” the letter reads in part.

Students Must Pay N2bn Debt If MMM Returns Their Investments Or Not – UNIOSUN VC

The Vice Chancellor of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Prof. Labode Popoola, has declared that the institution would collect the over N2bn debt students owed it whether they are able to recoup their money invested in the controversial ponzi scheme, Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox (MMM), or not.

Speaking on Saturday, he said:

“Some of them (students) used their school fees to invest in MMM. But whether MMM comes back or not, it is their headache. I have told them that we are not going to open the portal. If I see that a critical mass of the students pay, then we will decide to open the portal just for about 48 hours. But they must pay first.

“This is how we accumulated a debt profile of over N2bn, we cannot continue this way. They just have to pay the money.”

This declaration is coming at a time when MMM ‘investors’ have not been able to get their money back

In a chat with an MMM representative, one Juliana ‘Consultant’, told The Punch that payment had not begun on Saturday but that the scheme would “pay soon.”

“Some accounts are frozen and ‘GH’ have commenced,” she said.

Conte Praises Chelsea’s Response To Spurs Loss

Featured Image

Antonio Conte is a happy man, following Chelsea’s response to having their winning streak snapped by Tottenham.

Without Diego Costa, who is injured and reportedly angry with Conte, the Blues easily overcame the Foxes, with a brace from Alonso and a Pedro header sealing a 3-0 win at the King Power Stadium.

Chelsea’s last outing in the league, saw them lose 2-0 to Tottenham, with their record-breaking 13-game streak ended.

But they kept their grip on top spot on Saturday, much to Conte’s delight.

He told BT Sport: “It was a good performance because it’s not easy to come here and play against the champions, and to win in this way.

“I’m very pleased with the effort of my players because today we showed a great spirit and all the players tried to help each other, with the ball, without the ball.

“And I’m very pleased because after the defeat against Tottenham, we started in the right way.”

Leicester tried to play 3-4-3 , but lack of concentration proved to be their undoing in the match.

“We tried to play face to face but the first goal, and also the second, if we were a little more concentrated we can save this goal, but that’s it,” Ranieri said.

“I said to the players, it was out of the table this match because against this team you don’t know what will happen. Against Man City we made fantastic performance and won. Today we made a good performance and lost, that’s football.

“It was effective. If you take out the two goals, we played at the same level as them and [Leicester] tried to find solutions but they didn’t find [them].

“We went to the counter-attack and pressed high and, if we don’t concede the goal it’s another match.”

Rose To Hornacek: Be Hard On Us When It Comes To Defense

Featured Image

After practice on Saturday, New York Knicks star, Derrick Rose had one demand for coach Jeff Hornacek ‘demand more from us on defense’.

The Knicks have won nine of their last 11 matches and are ranked 25th in defensive efficiency.

“Our defense triggers a lot of things,” Rose said. “And I told him he has to be on us hard about defense every day. Like, beat it in our heads where we get tired of hearing him talking about it.”

“It’s not just one element,” Rose said. “It’s all of it — effort, schemes, decision-making, personnel, communication. It’s everything.

“You can tell when we’re out there. You have some games where we have everything clicking. It’s no middle ground with us,” Rose added. “It’s either we look good, or we look quite different than that. I wanted to say another word, but quite different than that. We got to have an in-between. Then right when we’re slipping, we got to be able to let everybody be aware of that and try to fix it — not after the game, but during the game.”

Hornacek said that the players asked coaches last month to practice more defense, and the coaches adjusted.

“We do defensive situations every day. Try to go live. It’s a case of continuing to work on it,” Hornacek said. “At times, it’s pretty decent and other times we kind of revert back. Again, we have to do a better job of just keeping harping on them about it and putting them in different situations in practice, and they’ll have to do better at doing it more consistently, so we all have to be better at it.”

Payet In Carroll Subliminal

Featured Image

Andy Carroll has hit out at playmaker Dimitri Payet, who is keen on leaving the club after scoring in the thumping of Crystal Palace.

Carroll scored a stunner after Feghouli opened the scoring, before Lanzini ensured victory for the Hammers with a goal of his own.

Payet, who has refused to play was not in the matchday squad and the striker, says no player is bigger than the club.

“’I don’t think any player is bigger than the club. That’s what the lads believe, the manager, all the staff and the fans. We showed we’re a tight group and got three points for it,” said the 28-year-old.

“We have answered a few of the critics, with everything that has been going in during the week and everyone talking. I have received a lot of calls and messages and it has been the same for the other players. It has been tough, especially as the lads are close to one another.

“To put all that behind us and work as a team has been fantastic. All the lads in the dressing room were fantastic and professional. They know what it means to the fans and the club. We stuck together and everyone is hungry and dedicated. It showed in the performance.”

Icardi: I Could Join China, But Later In My Career

Featured Image

Inter captain, Mauro Icardi insists he is happy in the Serie A, but he’s not ruling out a future move to the Chinese Super League.

China has lured stars like Oscar and Tevez to the league, with money the key motivation behind the transfer.

Icardi, however, has no intention of leaving Milan having signed a new five-year deal in October.

“China? I renewed [my contract],” the 23-year-old told Sky Sports Italia. “I’m happy to be with this shirt.

“China – there is always time at the end of career.”

Icardi was speaking after Inter’s 3-1 win over Chievo on Saturday.

The Argentine forward scored a second-half equaliser, taking his tally to 15 goals, as Inter extended their winning streak to five matches.

“We are on the right track. Now we’ve got to focus on the next match in the Coppa Italia, then turn to Serie A again,” Icardi added via Mediaset Premium.

“We are working on our mentality, everyone sacrifices himself for his team-mates. Third place is the objective and has been from the start of the season. We had a bit of a rough beginning, but we’re recovering lost ground.

“If the team wins, then I am happy. I’m also happy for Eder and his goal. This is a great squad, I’ve said that since the start of the campaign.”
