Sorry, But My Country Is Ugly, By Okey Ndibe

Sorry, But My Country Is Ugly, By Okey Ndibe

I’ve known for a while that Nigeria was in a sorry shape, but not even that knowledge prepared me for a side of the country I saw when I arrived on January 3 for a ten-day visit. The last time I traveled by road from Lagos to my home state of Anambra was in 2002, when my wife and I were Fulbright fellows teaching in Nigeria for a year. On this recent visit, I had little choice but to go by road. Friends and relatives had warned me that flights from Lagos to Enugu were prone, at best, to interminable delays, and at worst to incessant cancellations owing to the harmattan. The best bet, I was told, was to make the trip by road. So my younger brother and I hired a Toyota Siena, one of the most popular vehicles in Nigeria for long commutes.

This piece was written by Okey Ndibe. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

I’m willing to apologise for the bluntness of this assessment, but there’s no deodorising the reality: the ride was a nightmare. Before we set out, I had instructed the driver to take it easy. I made it clear that my brother and I were in no particular hurry, that what we sought, above all, was safe, cautious driving. The instructions fell on deaf ears.

In typical bravado, the driver told me he was not really a “driver.” He was married to a Togolese woman who lives in Belgium with their two boys. The Belgian authorities had deported him to Nigeria on account of some infraction he seemed in no haste to divulge. His wife was processing papers to enable him to rejoin his family, so he was, in the interim, just “managing” with the driving job.

Well, the short of it was he drove as if he were in an Indy 500 contest. It was all speed and all recklessness. He seemed to think any other driver who passed him—overtook him, as we say in Nigeria—were questioning his very manhood. And to reassert his manhood, he would give chase, create a veritable speeding derby, determined to reclaim the speeding title. I was awfully sleepy, but I knew that to fall asleep was to abandon my fate to this maniacal speedster. Countless times, I had to warn him—often by shouting at him—to slow down, and to refrain from cutting in front of his speeding adversary.

Yet, if our driver behaved like a crazed speeder, compared to many other drivers, his craziness seemed of a much milder variety.

Driving in Nigeria is an exercise in daredevilry. I hardly exaggerate here: the experience was akin to watching hundreds of clinically insane men and women who had been handed licenses and cars—and then unleashed on the road, empowered to suit themselves. To observe traffic in the country is to behold anarchy and chaos unfold before one’s eyes. Every sensible driving code is disdained, tossed aside. To describe the speeding as excessive is to equivocate; too many drivers seem on a mission to commit vehicular suicide and homicide. Many people assured me that the highways from Lagos to Anambra were now in excellent condition. I found patches of the road to be good, but the word that sums up the overall condition is: awful.

But drivers were the most potent, terrifying factor. Too many drove too close to the cars ahead of them, even though they couldn’t see what was in front—and vicious, tyre-wrecking potholes frequently ambushed cars.

I confirmed a sneaking suspicion: that Nigerian driving mirrors the country’s malaise, its pathology. At the slightest appearance of stalled traffic (say at the Lagos-Ibadan expressway), many Nigerian drivers responded in a counter-intuitive manner. If drivers acted with restraint by staying in line, everybody’s vehicle should be able to move on in ten or so minutes. Instead of which too many drivers attempted to out-maneuver others, to get ahead of everybody else. On a two-lane road, suddenly, to one’s amazement, four or five lanes would be formed. Often the ensuing gridlock would grind all movement to a halt, leaving everybody stuck for hours.

It reminded me of the disastrous price the country has paid for our politicians’ and bureaucratic elite’s depraved, boundless greed. That greed has sapped the country’s vitality, depleted its resources, left it a shell, and cast most of its people into abject impoverishment and forlorn resignation.

For me, traveling by road was a chastening, despair-inducing experience. One beheld Nigeria in its fulsome ugliness. The roadscape and landscape were marred, cheerless. From Lagos to Anambra, the roadside was a litter of plastic bottles, plastic wraps, discarded black plastic bags, orange rinds, banana peels, etc. No inch of space, from the journey’s beginning to its termination, was spared the plastic infestation. I had never encountered blight on this scale and in such unrelenting manner anywhere else in the world. But the assault wasn’t limited to the ubiquitous invasion of plastic. The carcasses of cars, trucks and tankers, many of them burnt, left the impression of battle zones—and compounded the eyesore. Numerous times I saw fast-moving fires burning up the roadside grass, shooting tiny sparks and plumes of vapour. The fires left their grotesque marks on the roadside, deepening the sense of gloom and ugliness.

Our driver said local hunters set most of the fires. The aim? To dislodge small game from holes and other hiding spots! What kind of country allows such backward practice, such mindless endangerment of the lives of commuters on highways plied by fuel-carrying tankers?

A common sight: people peeing or defecating beside the road or just a few feet off, openly. The picture struck me: we have been reduced, and have accepted our reduction, to animal-like status. We have allowed our political and bureaucratic thieftains to steal our humanity away, to strip us of what it means, at bottom, to possess human dignity, and to animalise us.

And how do we respond to this affront? We garland our dispossessors with flamboyant chieftaincy titles and festoon them with national honours. We reserve front seats for them in church and unctuously pledge to them—contemptible gluttons that they are—that we are fully loyal!

Each major town or city we passed exhibited a mini-mount of trash by the roadside. In no other place in the world had I seen trash so openly exhibited, as if it enhanced local character and burnished the country’s image. Indeed, it seemed as if different locations were proclaiming, with profane pride, “We’re a major (or up and coming) town, and we have the trash to prove it!”

Each mound of trash emitted a vile, dizzying stench. Yet, I saw bereft Nigerians who had scaled the bursting, steamy hills of waste, scavenging for some morsel of food to sup on, hunting for some tossed, varnished treasure.

I came out of Nigeria with a heavy heart, a certain sense of the gravity of our crises. Why is there no outcry about the blight, much less action? Where was the demand for an end to the conquest of the Nigerian space by “pure water” plastic?

What lofty and enduring dream could sprout in us when we have become accustomed to squalor, habituated to decrepitude, made our peace with detritus? What hope is there for us when we fetishise Dubai and flaunt our expensive Louis Vuitton handbags, and yet fail to realise that our country has become—is—an endless open toilet, overflowing with septic sludge?

Traveling by road, I saw Nigeria in a new way. The portrait, unflattering, left me deeply dispirited.

Former Brazil defender Cafu believes continuity is all Neymar needs to become best in the world.

His Barcelona teammate, Messi and Ronaldo have been the yardstick for the best in past years.

Both have claimed individual accolades over the years, but Cafu is confident Neymar can better the duo.

“A little bit of continuity,” two-time World champion and Champions League winner Cafu told Omnisport at the Florida Cup when asked what is missing from Neymar’s game.

“If he is given this, he’ll be the best in the world in a few years. I have no doubt about that.”

Naira Gains As CBN Commences Sale Of Dollars To BDCs

The Naira on Wednesday appreciated to N490 against the dollar in the parallel market, from the N497 it sold earlier this week.

This was prompted by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as it commenced the sale of dollars to bureaux de changes (BDCs).

Naira Trades At 494/$ On Christmas Day, From 268/$ On December 25, 2015

Speaking to Vanguard Newspaper, the President, Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, said that BDCs in the North West and North Central zones received dollars from the CBN.

Also confirming the development, Managing Director/Chief Executive, H.J Trust BDC, Mr. Harrison Owoh, said that the CBN approved the sale of $8000 to each BDC, and that BDCs in the South West zone were expecting to receive their dollars today.

Owoh stated: “The expectation of dollar sale has driven the rate down to N490 per dollar. The rate will further go down by the time we receive dollars in Lagos.”

He also confirmed that the dollars were sold to BDCs at N381 per dollar and that they were expected to sell to end users at N399 per dollar. CBN sells dollar proceeds of international money transfer to BDCs through Travelex Nigeria Limited.

Memphis Depay Deletes Everything Man Utd On His Instagram

It was learnt that the fee is £16m rising to £21.7m, with the add-ons including Lyon qualifying for the Champions League and Depay getting a new contract.

Depay will undergo a medical on Thursday ahead of a move to the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

The 22-year-old joined United from PSV Eindhoven for £25m in June 2015 under the management of his compatriot Louis van Gaal, but fell out of favour following the arrival of Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford last summer.

He has featured just eight times for United under Mourinho, with his last appearance to date coming against Feyenoord in the Europa League on November 24.

Lyon are fourth in Ligue 1, 11 points behind leaders Monaco and eight points behind PSG in third, the closest Champions League qualification place.

Depay, who has also attracted interest from Everton, is set to become the second big-name departure from United this month following the sale of Morgan Schneiderlin to the Toffees.

Schneiderlin, who signed from Southampton for £25m, was sold to Everton on 12 January for a fee rising to £24m.

Death Toll In IDP Camp Bombing Rises To 76

Featured Image

The death toll in the accidental strike launched by the Nigerian Air Force on Tuesday on an Internally Displaced Persons, IDP, camp, at Rann in Borno state has risen to 76.

This is even as more than 100 were wounded, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (ICRC) said on Wednesday.

52 Nigerians Dead, 120 Wounded After Military Jet “Accidentally” Bombed IDP Camp

As of Tuesday, the Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) reported the death toll as 52 with 120 wounded.

ICRC said six Nigeria Red Cross members were killed and 13 wounded. “In addition to aid staff, it is estimated that 70 people have been killed and more than a hundred wounded,” it said in a statement.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the information minister, said “the accidental bombing is not a true reflection of the level of professionalism” he had witnessed in the air force, in a statement issued earlier today.

He described as utterly tragic the accidental bombing of a civilian community in Rann, Borno State, by a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) jet, causing deaths and injuries.

The Air Force had said an unspecified number of civilians were killed and wounded in the mistaken strike in Borno state.

Meanwhile, the Air Force says it regretted the accidental attack, which was aimed at Boko Haram group.

She also bared her undying readiness to meet with the YBNL star.

She said: “Music gives me joy; it relaxes me even when I am stressed. You can see my small speaker here. Whenever I am off duty or whenever I have any little time to rest, I listen to music and it gives me a lot of satisfaction.

What You Need To Know About William Onyeabor, The Late Synth Funk Musician

Featured Image

William Onyeabor, the highly influential Nigerian funk musician has passed away at the age of 70, following a brief illness, according to statement released on his Facebook page.

Popularly described as a great Nigerian business leader and mythic music pioneer, little is known about the synth funk musician. I only got to know about him a few years back when I accidentally stumbled on of his classics, Atomic Bomb, on a popular UK pop culture website and ever since the discovery, I’ve been a huge fan of his music which mostly take on social issues.

“I only create music that will help the world.” he said in rare interview with BBC Radio 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne in 2014.

Here are some of the things you need to know about the late musical genius.

Starting his career in 1977, Onyeabor composed and self-released nine albums of electronic funk over his lifetime, albums which he recorded, pressed and printed at his own pressing plant in southeast Nigeria, Wilfilms Limited.

Onyeabor gave up recording in 1985 after becoming a born-again Christian.

In his home state of Enugu, he was crowned a High Chief and he ran, among other things, a flour mill, a gas station and the city’s local football team, the Enugu Rangers.

In 2014, Vice released a short documentary called Fantastic Man that explored Onyeabor’s music and included its filmmakers trying, and failing, to track him down for an interview.

In 2014, Onyeabor spoke to the BBC 6 Music presenter Lauren Laverne, giving the only radio interview of his life.

He is survived by his wife, four children and four grandchildren.

Those Who Shout ‘Allah Akabar’ To Kill Innocent People Will Go To Hell – Sultan Of Sokoto

The Sultan, who also doubles as the Co-Chairman of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council, made this known yesterday in Ilorin at the opening of a two-day international conference organised by the Kwara State government on security and peaceful co-existence in Nigeria.

He said: “Therefore, it is wrong when people wake up and dress themselves up with explosives going into market and other public places and shouting Allahu Akabar and killing innocent people under the guise of jihad, thinking you are going straight to heaven.

“I have said it time without number that they could profess to be Muslims but what they are doing is anti-Islam. It is against the Holy Quran dictates of Almighty Allah and they are going to hell for committing murder unjustly.”

He also condemned the massacre in southern Kaduna, describing it as a Godless act and urged the military intelligence unit to arrest all the perpetrators of the crime.

The Sultan continued: “We accepted to attend this programme for obvious reasons. We know the serious insecurity issues affecting our country now. There is no state that is not facing one crisis or the other.

“I give kudos to the Kwara State government for organising this forum to help us chart a way forward. I will challenge the state government to come up with a model that other states could emulate and have a peaceful atmosphere.

“God did not make a mistake when he created us as Nigerians and put us together. We must understand that and all of us who profess to be Christians or Muslims have a guide which is either the Quran or Bible. In these two major religions there is nowhere where killing of innocent people is allowed.”

Ojukokoro which is a Yoruba word is translated as greed in English language. The movie unwraps an intriguing tale about a money-strapped manager of a shady Petrol Station who decides to rob his employers but along the line finds out in a sudden twist that he is not alone in his ambition and that a good reason isn’t always a right one.

Speaking on the movie, the director said, “Ojukokoro was inspired by the state of events in Nigeria during 2014 elections with the general state of greed in the nation due to the upcoming elections. It is an ensemble cast movie that deals primarily with a heist which is an avenue that is rarely explored in Nollywood.

“From the conception to execution, the movie that took me three years to produce. I wrote the script when I was fresh from film school with little knowledge of how the Nigerian Film industry operates. It’s nice to finally have an end product after many years of dreaming and scheming,” he added.

Tottenham Reject Offers For Defender Kevin Wimmer

Featured Image

Tottenham Hotspur have rejected bids from Premier League and Bundesliga clubs for defender Kevin Wimmer, according to the player’s agent.

Kevin Wimmer has struggled to break into Tottenham’s side having made just seven appearances in all competitions this season.

Only three of those outings have come in the Premier League, but the defender may get a chance now that Jan Vertonghen is facing 10 weeks on the sidelines with injury.

Wimmer’s agent Mithat Halis has claimed that despite the club receiving offers for the player, the North London outfit intend to keep him.

“FC Koln made an offer. There have been a few offers from the Premier League and the Bundesliga. There is a lot of interest,” Halis told ESPN. “Tottenham do not want to sell. All offers have been turned down and he is staying.”

Tottenham, who are currently second in the table, have the best defensive record in the Premier League after conceding just 14 goals.

The defender joined Spurs from FC Koln in 2015.

4 Feared Dead In Fresh Akwa Ibom, Cross River Communities Clash

Featured Image

Four people have been feared dead with scores injured in the renewed boundary crisis between Oku Iboku community in Akwa Ibom and Ikot Offiong in Cross River.

Confirming the incident on Tuesday to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Bassey Essien Bassey, a former Vice Chairman of Itu Local Government Area, said that several persons sustained injuries while over 20 houses were burnt, including a filling station in the age-long communal conflict.

According to the former official, two security operatives were among those who lost their lives, forcing the military to deploy dozens of soldiers to the scene.

Bassey said that motorists and commuters along the Calabar-Itu highway were delayed for more than four hours until the arrival of security operatives to clear the road.

Also speaking, Ene Essien, a Community Leader in Oku Iboku, said that the latest incident occurred after series of attempts by the people to re-occupy the fishing area failed as they were forced out by the people of Oku Iboku.

He said: “The Ikot Offiong people are fishermen who migrated into our area from Akpabuyo in Cross River State to settle.

“After settling for so many years, they developed the instinct of seizing our land and even expanding more into Itu.”

The community leader added that their “uncomplimentary” relationship with the host community forced them to push them away from the fishing community.

“When they left our community, they settled at Odukpani, but the people also pushed them out of their place in Akpabuyo, because of their warring attitude,” he said.

Mr. Essien said the intractable conflict had lingered for years, leading to intermittent attacks by the invaders from Ikot Offiong.

According to him, the communal crisis started around the fishing area, but later escalated to the Calabar-Itu road when the people of Ikot Offiong returned in reprisal, leading to the death of four persons.

NAN gathered that the invaders returned with armed hoodlums in 11 buses and several flying boats.

It was gathered that they were later repelled by a combined team of soldiers, anti-riot police officers and officials of the State Anti-Robbery and Kidnapping Squad, SARS.

Jammeh Declares State Of Emergency As Nigerian troops, Warship Head For Gambia

The “unwilling to depart” President of Gambia Yahya Jammeh has declared a three-month state of emergency, with less than a day to the inauguration of president-elect Adama Barrow.

President Jammeh Goes Tough On ECOWAS, Vows To Defend Gambian Sovereignty

In a televised address on state TV on Tuesday evening, Jammeh announced that the 90 days state of emergency started from January 17 and will end April 17, 2017.

“Under this state of public emergency, civil liberties are to be fully respected while all citizens and residents in The Gambia are banned from any acts of disobedience to the laws of The Gambia, incitement to violence and acts intended to disturb public order and peace,” he said.

Jammeh gave reasons for the state of emergency including “the need to prevent a constitutional crisis and power vacuum pending the determination of the petitions at the Supreme Court and the application for an injunction against swearing in Mr. Adama Barrow, until the Supreme Court decides on the 1st December 2016 Presidential Election results”.

He also ordered the security forces, who pledged allegiance to him, to maintain law and order in the country during the period.

Jammeh’s declaration is coming on a day when report says Nigeria troops are preparing to arrive at a base of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) alongside troops from Senegal to ensure that President Jammeh is ousted from office tomorrow, January 19.

Nigerian warship, NNS UNITY, is also heading for the coast of The Gambia to join the operation, the daily newspaper, The Punch has reported.

Barrow Whisked To Safety, Thousands Fleeing Gambia As Political Crisis Deepens

It also said it learnt from a top military source in the Nigerian Air Force that the troops would be briefed by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, in the early hours of Wednesday, before leaving for Senegal.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has warned the embattled Jammeh, saying he is losing opportunities to peacefully handover to President-elect Barrow and avoid the consequences of his actions.

Jammeh’s tenure ends Jan. 19, the same day that Barrow is expected to be sworn-in as his successor.

Both the African Union and ECOWAS have said that Jammeh will cease to be recognised as Gambian President from the date.

Before The Gamble In The Gambia: Memo To Buhari

Spokesperson of the U.S. Department of State, Mr John Kirby, said at a press briefing on Tuesday that Jammeh was putting his legacy and The Gambia in peril.

“President Jammeh is losing opportunities to respect the will of the Gambian people and to peacefully hand over power to the president-elect, which is supposed to happen on Thursday.

“Doing so would allow him to leave office with his head held high and to protect the Gambian people from potential chaos.

“Failure to do so will put his legacy – and, more importantly, the Gambia – in peril, and we have been clear about this,” he said.

Barcelona Won’t Sell Arda Turan For Less Than €30 Million

Featured Image

Barcelona would not consider letting Arda Turan leave for less than €30m, reports AS.

Turan, according to recent reports in Spain and Turkey, is a target for Chinese Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande, who are willing to offer him a lucrative salary.

Barca coach Luis Enrique is a big fan of the Turkey playmaker and does not want him to leave, but club officials could be tempted to cash in on Turan if they receive a big bid.

According to AS, the La Liga champions, who secured his services for €42m in 2015, would not contemplate selling Turan for less than €30m.

Guangzhou Evergrande are expected to make a €50m bid for Turan, who would also be offered a deal worth €20m-a-season should he make the move.

Turan is said to have worked hard for his move to Barcelona and is not eager to leave for Asia, but the deal could prove too good for all parties to reject, with the La Liga giants eager to fund a new contract for star man Lionel Messi.
