Middlesbrough Manager Aitor Karanka Warns Adama Traore Not To Get Carried Away By Chelsea’s Interest

Featured Image

Adama Traore has been warned not to risk losing his place in the Middlesbrough team by getting carried away with Premier League leaders Chelsea’s pursuit of him.

360nobs reported on Tuesday that the 20-year-old Spanish winger, who only joined Boro from Aston Villa in August, was a Chelsea target after a series of high-octane individual displays in the top flight.

“If a team like Chelsea is following Adama Traore, it’s because his progression has been brilliant in six months and he’s doing well,” Karanka said. “But he’s young and the main thing he has to do is to keep going in the same way because football changes a lot.

“Maybe he is in a big moment, but with Patrick here now, with other players already, maybe in two or three months, he will not be playing and Chelsea disappears and everybody disappears.”

He said: “Adama can’t go anywhere because he has played with Villa and with us, so he can’t play for another club.

Leicester City Stiker Leonardo Ulloa Hands In Transfer Request

Featured Image

Leicester City striker Leonardo Ulloa has handed in a formal transfer request, to try to force through a move to Alaves.

Leicester want to keep  Leonardo Ulloa, and were prepared to discuss a new contract with the Argentinian, who has 18 months left on his current deal.

But the striker has decided his future lies away from King Power Stadium, whatever offer comes back, after making just one Premier League start all season.

It’s thought Alaves’ offer is the only one that’s come forward so far, and it’s well below Leicester’s valuation of the player. Leicester turned down a £9m bid from Swansea for him in the summer.

Adebayor Says Arsenal Are Nothing Without Ozil And Sanchez

Featured Image

If Arsenal did not have Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil , they would be nothing, according to former striker Adebayor.

Both players have been responsible for 19 goals and 10 assists for the club. They both have 18 months left on their contract and have been linked with an exit from the club.

They’ve refused to renew their contract with Arsenal until Wenger extends his stay at the club.

“Arsenal have a good team but if Sánchez gets injured I don’t know who they’ve got,” Adebayor told The Guardian.

“If you look at Chelsea, when Hazard gets injured they’ve got Willian; if Willian gets injured they can still play Moses further forward.

“Arsenal’s problem is that today they are just Ozil and Sanchez. If one of them gets injured, it is a problem.”

Arsenal sit fourth in the Premier League after 21 games, eight points behind table-topping Chelsea and one point adrift of north London rivals Tottenham.

Patrick Bamford Happy To Move To Middlesbrough But Admits His Career Stalled At Chelsea

Featured Image

Patrick Bamford admits his career stalled at Chelsea, but sees a bright future ahead now he is back at Middlesbrough.

The striker, who spent the 2014-15 season on loan at the Riverside, has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal after Chelsea accepted an undisclosed offer.

“I’m delighted to be back,” he told Sky Sports. “It’s something I pushed for when I knew I would be leaving Burnley.

“My development has stalled because I haven’t played as many games, but I still learnt things in training. I’ve changed my approach to training, which is important. I’ve also toughened up mentally.

“It’s been hard. When I was last here I was almost playing every game, then I went to Palace and didn’t play. Then I went to Norwich and played a little before moving to Burnley where I barely played at all. It’s been tough but I’m ready for this next challenge.”

“My dream was to play for Chelsea – maybe I was bit naive,” he said.

“I still have that dream. You never know what’s going to happen in the future but for now, even though I was sad to leave, it was one of the happiest days of my life. I was delighted to be coming back here. Now I’ve got to help Boro push on and see how far we can get.”

Jose Fonte Close To Joining West Ham For £8 Million

Featured Image

West Ham United are closing in on the signing Southampton defender Jose Fonte.

Talks are continuing today and a fee of £8m is being discussed for the central defender. Fonte has handed in a transfer request and has been told he can leave Southampton this month.

Jose Fonte earlier this month revealed that he had not been offered a new contract.

The defender, who joined the Saints from Crystal Palace in 2010, has 18 months remaining on his current deal.

When asked about the potential transfer during Thursday’s press conference, West Ham manager Slaven Bilicplayed it down, telling reporters: “[Fonte is] not having a medical today. We are not talking about transfers, we are working on some though.

“There are one or two players we need, it won’t be easy, but we are trying. Hopefully have something to announce in 24 hours.”

Fonte has not played for Southampton since he handed in a transfer request on January 5.

Osinbajo To Act As President As Buhari Proceeds On A 10-Day Vacation

Buhari begins vacation as Osinbajo becomes acting president

Buhari begins vacation as Osinbajo becomes acting president

In a letter read by the President of the Senate Dr. Bukola Saraki, during plenary on Thursday, Buhari said the vacation – which begins from Monday January 23 to Monday February 6, 2017 – would be a working leave.

The letter, which revealed that the 10 day period formed part of his annual vacation for 2017, had a copy forwarded to the House of Representatives.

Also confirming the vacation, the president’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, in a statement, said the short leave was part of his annual vacation.

He said the president would resume work on February 6, 2017.

Adesina said: “During the vacation, the president will also undergo routine medical check-ups.

“In line with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the president of the Senate, and Speaker, House of Representatives have been duly communicated.

“While away, the Vice-President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, will perform the functions of the Office of the President.”

It is the third time Mr. Buhari will be transferring power to Mr. Osinbajo to act as president, since the two leaders were inaugurated in May 2015.

The first time was in February 2016 when the President embarked on a five-day vacation; and the second time was in June 2016 when Mr. Buhari went on a trip to the United Kingdom for medical for treatment of what the Presidency called ear infection.

Boca Juniors Interested In Signing Manchester United Goalkeeper Sergio Romero

Featured Image

Boca Juniors are eyeing up a summer move for Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

The 29-year old Argentina international is back up for David de Gea at Old Trafford and has made just five appearances this season.

But with Sam Johnstone at Aston Villa on loan until the end of the season, the Romero deal will have to wait until the summer as he’s the only senior back-up goalkeeper available to Jose Mourinho.

Sergio Romero, 29, joined United from Sampdoria in the summer of 2015 to give him the chance to work with Louis Van Gaal again, his manager at AZ Alkmaar. But the goalkeeper has only made 15 appearances since joining.

Emmanuel Adebayor Determinted To Play In The EPL Again

Featured Image

Former Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has expressed his desire to return to the Premier League.

Emmanuel Adebayor  also insised he has no idea why he has a ‘bad reputation’ in England

Adebayor has been without a club since leaving Crystal Palace at the end of last season.

However, he is currently captaining Togo at the Africa Cup of Nations and is confident that he has plenty more to offer at the highest level.

Adebayor has scored 97 goals in 242 Premier League games.

“To be honest with you, I’m feeling even better than when I was on top of my game. I think people can see I am ready, that I am still a footballer. Those who know me will not be surprised, even some of my old Tottenham teammates. I had hardly played for months under Andre Villas-Boas and then, when Tim Sherwood took over on the Monday, I started against West Ham on the Wednesday was man of the match and scored. It’s kind of normal and convinces me that I’ve got five or six years left in me, easily,” he told The Guardian.

“I love England, love the Premier League and want to find a way to get back there. I want to hit the top level again, that’s for sure. If not, I just want to play football and have fun, so if I get an offer somewhere then I’ll go. I have a bad reputation in England and I don’t know why. Maybe it’s something that has just followed me.

“But one thing I always say is that 90% of the people I’ve played with would say I’m an amazing guy, a great teammate. Other people, those who work on the gate at every stadium I’ve played at, will tell you I am a humble guy and a nice person. But the press will say what they want, and in my career I’ve been unfortunate enough to have a lot of negativity.

“Of course I’m watching the Premier League and I’ll think: ‘Wow, I could have scored that goal,’ ‘Oh, I could have missed that’ or ‘Wow, I’ve missed this atmosphere’. That’s normal, it’s where I’ve been for nine or 10 years and you miss it.”

“He was very good for us last season and he has continued to do it for us this season and when players are playing like that, at a good age as well, then a lot of clubs – at least in the papers – are interested in them and that puts them in a good position for a new deal,” Bilic said.

“He definitely deserved it, so it’s a club decision together with my own but for me he has a big-time green light to sign a new deal with us!

“The players have deals, but he is the player who came last season to us and he has improved a lot and came from being a player for the future to one who we gave a chance to one of our most important players.”

Eric Bailly Wants To Retire At Manchester United

Featured Image

Manchester United defender Eric Bailly has declared  he wants to spend the rest of his career at the club.

The 22-year-old was Jose Mourinho’s first signing for United, joining Old Trafford in a £30 million deal from Villarreal last summer.

Bailly made an impressive start to his career at United but his season was disrupted in October due to a knee injury.

“Hopefully I can play in Manchester all my life. I’m very happy here because it is such a great club. It’s such an honour to play for United and I hope I can continue giving my best to become a great player in this club,” Bailly toldSport360.

“It’s difficult to claim the position of being a first-team player, but I have to enjoy every minute I get because it’s a wonderful club and I’m very happy to be there and to be part of it. I’m happy to be at such a big club. I never dreamed a better dream than playing for Man United. Hopefully I can enjoy every bit of it every day.

“There are a lot of new players and the coach is new. Now we are noting that the team is gelling together and creating a good atmosphere, and we are having the results too. We know that with a coach like [Jose] Mourinho, he can bring the best out of players, so I’m very confident that this team can go further. The players are getting a good understanding both on and off the pitch.”

Confusion As Ponzi Scheme Participants Trade Insults | “God Will Forever Punish MMM”

Featured Image

The rapport between Nigerians and the popular ponzi scheme MMM may have begun to experience crack as many of the over three million ‘investors’ are gradually losing faith in the scheme despite pleas and assurances from its management.

MMM: The Fool And His Money Are Parted

Quite a number of participants in the Ponzi scheme have begun to attack each other with many others trading accusations due to their inability to get their money out of the scheme after waiting for more than a month.

Now deprived of patience, the participants have started to question the mode of operation, further faulting explanations offered by guiders.

MMM Freeze ‘Still Effective’ 96 Hours After Come Back

The disgruntlement may have been further triggered after the ponzi scheme announced the removal of all payment (Get Help) requests by participants earlier this week.

‘If You Are Involved In MMM, You Are Demonic’ – Apostle Suleman [Watch Video]

The development meant that even the poor or small investors that the scheme said upon its ‘return’ on January 13 it would pay before higher investors were equally frozen out.

“We were patient for a whole month. What were you guys doing during that period? It’s not right that after you made us wait for so long, you are now making some upgrade or whatever without pre-informing us. You are now preaching patience,” a participant, Busola, wrote on one of the schemes help platforms, mmmhelp.blogspot.com.

The Punch reports that when accused by an anonymous participant of being rude and refusing to calm down, Busola fired back:

“Dear anonymous, why not carry cane and start flogging me? Last I checked it was a free world. There’s no law against me saying my mind or ranting as you claim. Plus if I can remember clearly, you didn’t pay for my subscription so who the f**k are you to ask me why I am ranting. You really don’t want me to divert my attention to you, trust me. I don’t know you and you won’t wanna know me…”

Another participant with the username Jane suggested that participants should be made to provide help before getting help, saying:

“This is what majority of your participants want, this is Nigeria, nobody is going to willingly PH once paid for fear of not being paid again, we are ready to PH to GH because then we are sure there would always be somebody to pay us.”

However, she was told such a move would negate the MMM ideology. She warned that the scheme was losing trust as a result of the problem, saying:

“Making people wait endlessly without hope of getting their money back negates MMM ideology even more so chose which is better,100 per cent loss of trust which is ongoing or 50 per cent loss of trust.”

Joseph Adeiye accused the guiders of collapsing the system and made a call for guiders to provide help to sustain the system. His view was shared by several people including one Olamide, who posted:

“Those guiders are the reason for the problems the system is facing. A guider GH 2.4m but he only PH 300k. Imagine that f*^k%*ry! They are all thieves and will not want to PH. Greedy bastards.”

He added, “They had a whole month to do this stupid upgrade but they didn’t do anything. I am seriously suspecting that they are intentionally causing the panic so that the system will crash. Bastards!!!! All of dem”.

When a participant, Sunday Olawoyin, called for patience and for the MMM administrators to be commended as one month was not enough for the system upgrade, he was attacked by aggrieved participants including one Ike Oko.

Oko retorted, “Quiet your mouth there. A site can be running and still be upgraded, it is just a matter of uploading the files to the server. Do stop saying wizard, wizard this. All programmers and even ordinary web developers can do it too. Do shut your trap .”

An anonymous participant, however, continued to defend the scheme, and expressed surprise that people were not satisfied with the explanations provided for the challenges.

“Let’s be patient and understanding… Have you considered the fact that maybe there is not enough PH (help) to go round? You paid to somebody and you need someone to pay you.”

In response to the anonymous comment, MMM Nigeria help replied, “Together we change the world.” But that only enraged aggrieved participants with Jane posting, “MMM is just mocking us with dis useless slogan of “together we change the world” can’t you see it’s not working in this case? chai! dem warn me I no hear.”

A participant with the username, Fagsam, lamented:

“I’m getting tired and losing confidence in this system already. People are now making mockery of me that “didn’t we tell you not to do mmm?”… Everything needed should have been done during the break…. Sad something.”

As the debate raged on, some participants begged those behind the scheme to pity them, while others were worried about the growing panic and negative reports it would generate.

“Please, MMMNigeria, don’t fail us because we have never failed you people since we started…We are just speechless,” wrote Chinaza Abel.

But some have given up on the scheme with one of them posting:

“This MMM is fraudulent. Poor people like us are suffering so much. I wish I never put my money on MMM. God will forever punish MMM and all the people behind it, forever and ever.”

Middlesbrough Manager Aitor Karanka Hints At More Signings

Featured Image

Middlesbrough have made three signings so far this January in Patrick Bamford, Mikael Soisalo and Rudy Gestede, and Aitor Karanka says he is after more reinforcements:

Bamford rejoined the Smoggies on a four-and-a-half-year deal yesterday.

“I said always the main position I want to strengthen is the wings as the only quick player we have is Adama,” said Karanka.

“I want to bring another but we have 2 weeks.

“The club is working well behind the scenes and knows the players I like and would want to bring in.”

“I am really pleased Patrick Bamford is back. He’s a player I like a lot and he has played his best football with us. The most important thing is to recover Patrick’s confidence. He can be as important for us as he was two years ago,” he told reporters.

Patrick can play any attacking position. His best characteristic is that he is always thinking forward, which we need right now.

“As a coach I always have a lot of options in my head for how we can play each game. If we win this game we can open a gap at the bottom. But it is a tough league and we have to battle until the last moment.”

West Brom are targeting Watford striker Odion Ighalo with a view to a January move.

Discussions between the clubs took place last summer with the Hornets demanding £22million for the Nigerian forward.

Ighalo scored 17 goals in 42 games last season as Watford finished 13th in the top flight and reached the FA Cup semi-final.

However, he has managed just two goals in 19 appearances so far this season

Should the clubs be able to find a compromise, Ighalo could be paired with Salomon Rondon in a powerful partnership.

Cavani Says His Career Reached Its Zenith In 2011

Featured Image

Edinson Cavani has admitted the time his career peaked was back in 2011, when Uruguay won the Copa America.

Uruguay won their 15th Copa America, after emerging from a group comprising of Chile, Peru and Mexico. They also beat Argentina and Peru, before thrashing Paraguay 3-0 in the final.

Cavani was with Napoli at the time and scored 33 goals prior to the beginning of the tournament.

Speaking exclusively to Goal, the PSG star said: “This is not the best time in my career. The best year was 2011, when we won Copa America.

“In Uruguay everyone breathes football since childhood. That makes you very passionate, then when you get onto the field you feel it.

“You can see players with so much passion and you know they’ve done it since they were boys. They love the team and they give it all for the others beside them.”

And Cavani, who has scored a total of 37 goals for his country, has already set his sights on the tournament in Russia.

“Some people see the table and get crazy,” he added. “Look at Uruguay’s position! I think there’s a reason for that position.

“Sometimes it’s difficult to get around the idea that we do have good players and great fans, and that’s what got us where we are. It’s definitely not by chance.

“We have some key matches ahead, and against Brazil we have to give it all and work our socks off to earn the 3 points.

“The players and the whole team, we have the same dream for 2017: qualify for the World Cup. For that we will fight, and we want to get it.”

360Fresh: Bianca Rose – Because Of Love ft. Ayanna Witter-Johnson

Featured Image

British/Jamaican/Nigerian singer-songwriter Bianca Rose has been writing and composing for the best part of a decade. In 2007 she self- released her debut EP ‘Truth and Tiny Tragedies’, and has continued to collaborate and write songs for other artists ever since. Accompanying herself on guitar and ukulele, Bianca’s live shows have included sets for Sofar Sounds, Tigmus, London Jazz and the CrimeJazz Festival in the Netherlands with additional performances for Playstation, OH TV, & radio play on Radio 1 and 1Xtra. As lyricist in the Ready Riters songwriting collective, Bianca recently co-wrote X-Factor contestant Annastasia Baker’s debut album, resulting in Annastasia’s 2014 Mobo nomination.

Bianca has decided that 2017 is the right time to focus on her own music again, and release some of the songs she’s written over the last few years. The second single taken from her highly anticipated debut album is entitled Because Of Love and features Mobo nominated singer/songwriter and cellist Ayanna Witter-Johnson. Bianca explains “Ayanna and I collaborated on every part of the creation of this song, from writing to recording, so it only made sense that the video was an extension of this partnership, whilst debunking the stereotype of competition between women. We believe there is a place for us all in this business so we actively make room for one another.”

Her debut album No Fear Here was part-funded by the PRS for Music Foundation and produced by critically acclaimed jazz musician and producer Femi Temowo, (George Benson, Andrea Bocelli, Amy Winehouse, The Roots, ESKA & Soweto Kinch). No Fear Here is an expansive interpretation of the singer-songwriter genre, fusing Bianca’s folk/gospel sensibilities with both Bianca and Femi’s African diasporic perspectives. Bianca adds “These songs are snippets of the lessons I’ve learned and am still learning. Some people believe that fear is something we should live with, or that we should use it as motivation to achieve our goals. From my experience, I believe it’s something to be conquered and routed out of every area of our lives. I try to live on a daily mission to seek and destroy all traces of fear and oppression in my life. It’s the only way that’s worked for me.” Because of Love is now available on all streaming platforms and No Fear Here is set to release on January 30th.

Jammeh’s Lawyer Flees, Advises Him To Step Down | Adama Barrow To Be Inaugurated In Senegal

Featured Image

Edu Gomez, the legal representative of Gambian dictator, Yahya Jammeh, has fled the country to neighbouring Senegal after writing the president a letter to step down from office in the interest of peace.

Gambian Soldiers Withdraw As ECOWAS Troops Await Signal To Remove Jammeh

In a letter dated January 17, Gomez, who represented Mr. Jammeh and his party, the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction, APRC, in their failed attempt to reclaim the legal governance of the country, said he was made to work under “tremendous pressure and coercion”.

He wrote: “On Tuesday 17th January 2017, my son and I took a crucial decision to seek sanctuary in the sister Republic of Senegal. This was found necessary due to the mounting fear and rapidly increasing tension at every passing moment.”

“The general perception is that after midnight on 18th January 2017, the mandate of President Yahya Jammeh would expire and President-elect Mr. Adama Barrow would be sworn-in as president, in line with the dictates of our constitution. Any attempt to interrupt this ceremony, it is clearly understood, opens the Gambia to attack from ECOWAS forces.

“As a legal practitioner representing President Jammeh and the APRC the party in the ongoing petition filed on his behalf at the Supreme Court of the Gambia, I have to admit that I was working under tremendous pressure and coercion. All the lawyers with established practices in the Gambia refused to be associated with the said petition. As a retainer for the ruling APRC party, I could not refuse the brief on professional grounds, despite my apprehension.”

He advised Mr. Jammeh to step down so as to avoid a gruesome end to his presidency and in the interest of peace and the safety of the Gambian people.

He added: “Having fortunately eluded the 24 hour military security around me and my family, I managed to arrive in Senegal where I now gained safety, respite and mental stability. In my present situation, I humbly and respectfully advise President Jammeh as the champion of peace he has been known to be to peacefully step aside in the interest of peace and safety of the Gambian people.

“Everything except God’s kingdom comes to an end. I advocate for a peaceful end, rather than a violent and gruesome end. Please, in the name of the most merciful God, do not allow your legacy to be described as one where ‘the pen of sword dipped in innocent blood writes its history on the rough pages of tyranny.

Meanwhile, Adama Barrow, the man who won the Gambia’s disputed election, will be sworn in as president at the country’s embassy in neighbouring Senegal.

Barrow Whisked To Safety, Thousands Fleeing Gambia As Political Crisis Deepens

The message, posted on Adama Barrow’s social media accounts, invited the general public to attend the ceremony.

This is even as last-ditch efforts by regional leaders to convince Yahya Jammeh to step down as president failed last night.

‘Pretty Mike’ As A Nigerian Parable

‘Pretty Mike’ As A Nigerian Parable – Abimbola Adelakun

After weeks of chinwagging over Pretty Mike (Mike Eze-Nwalie Nwogu) and the stunt he pulled – putting two masked women on a dog leash and taking them to public events – the police finally had him stopped. As media report hinted, it was the Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, that asked that Pretty Mike be picked up for such an offensive treatment of women. The immediate former Lagos State Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, said the case would be treated as a “criminal investigation” because what Pretty Mike did was not merely a crime but also “a dehumanising act.”

This piece was written by Abimbola Adelakun. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Of his actions, Pretty Mike himself said it was a political critique of Nigeria and its debasing treatment of women; that he thought staging a live performance would attract more attention to the cause he was promoting than if he merely talked. If Pretty Mike is to be wholly believed (and from his interview, I found no reason to doubt his sincerity), then he should get an A for finding a spectacular mirror to reflect Nigeria’s shortcomings. Pretty Mike talked about child marriage, domestic abuse, and the several other ways our culture represses women and said he decided a graphic representation of repression would prod our benumbed collective conscience more effectively than a verbal campaign. The question now is, did such a raw representation of the misogyny latent in our culture cause male chauvinists to stop and reflect, or the point eluded them?

Pretty Mike Released From Police Custody

I admit I found it baffling that Pretty Mike’s unattenuated display of female dehumanisation provoked a visceral reaction whereas ours is a society where misogyny is a lived experience of many women, especially the ones unprotected by education and social class. From the domestic realm where women are subject to violence by men who want to enforce their “constituted authority” to the public sphere where threats of violence and actual violence are used to keep women subjugated, there is a lot about Nigeria and its social constitution that are anti-women. So what was it about Pretty Mike’s action that jarred the public when in reality, female dehumanisation is a norm?

While I praise the social conscience the former Lagos CP displayed on the Pretty Mike issue, I also think it is important not to get lost in the symbolism of Pretty Mike’s actions and miss the stuff of reality: Nigeria Police stations are one of the most violent and anti-women spaces in Nigeria. Ideally, the police station should be a safe space where a defenceless woman can walk in to report cases of physical and/or sexual violence against her. The police station should be a place where trained police officers, displaying utmost professional ethics and empathy, pursue justice on behalf of a victim. If a woman was held in jail overnight, she should not have to fear sexual assault from male police officers who cannot hold the beast in them in check. In reality however, police stations do not live up to these ideals and the evidence is not exactly hidden. A 2014 damning report on Nigeria Police stations by Amnesty International (titled, Welcome to Hell Fire: Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Nigeria) identified female rape as one of the instruments of torture police deploy against women when they have them in their custody.

Pretty Mike’s repelling show, if we look at it more closely, is actually a parable that should teach us that a society that dehumanises women does not benefit men in the long run either. In the video where Pretty Mike put the women on a leash, one also sees the irony of his act: he is as much a slave of the women as the women are his slave. To keep the women on the leash, he has to hold tight to that leash. He cannot let go for even a minute to enjoy himself at public gatherings because he would then have to relinquish his hold on the women. His own personal freedom is short-circuited as long as he holds the women down with that leash. As a master, he is enslaved to his slaves. The women, as his symbolic slaves, are also masters over him. There, therefore, lies a lesson for societies with social structures that subjugate women to second class citizenship.

When women are repressed, menfolk themselves will not progress because their freedom is ultimately tied to that of the women they cannot stand to see as counterparts. It is no coincidence that most societies that dehumanise women because they consider them inferior are also Third World. They are also the ones that tend to rank low on developmental indexes. Societies that have evolved a consciousness that does away with outdated ideas of gender, whether those misogynistic attitudes are religious or historical, concomitantly evolve other sophisticated ideas that result in social progressions. The men in societies who rigidly hold on to dogmatic ideas of male superiority are the ones who, like Pretty Mike, are themselves held down by the enforcement of the inequality they perpetrate.

It is important to keep making this point especially because some religious leaders like to pass off gender inequality as a value dictated by their religion and which cannot be altered for any reason. One recent example is the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Saad Abubakar, and his rejection of the gender equality bill. The Sultan’s argument was that a bill that seeks to equally share inheritance between male and female scions is antithetical to Islam. While the Sultan is free to hold his personal opinion on his religion, when it comes to legislation that can affect the lives of millions of women – some of them not even born – he needs to be called out. Seventeen years into the new millennium, we can no longer wave religion as an excuse to deny women rights that should otherwise be basic. I am sure if every item – material and otherwise – that the Sultan adorns himself with were to be subjected to historic and cultural deconstruction, we will find that part of the philosophy that produced them are inherently antithetical to Islamic ideals. If religion has not stopped us from embracing cultural productions of societies that have embraced ideas of gender equality, why should we continue to hold on ourselves on a leash in the guise of protecting religious values?

What manner of mistake?

How does it happen that a Nigerian fighter jet would “mistakenly” drop a bomb over an IDP camp and more than 50 people would perish (and another 100 plus injured) just like that? How could such an unconscionable act of violence have happened to people who have suffered gross act of violence that has pushed them out of their homes and landed them in a refugee camp? What manner of incompetence led to such a massacre? Was it a matter of incompetence or a deliberate act of psychopathy by an officer?

President Muhammadu Buhari has, characteristically, put out a press release describing the unfortunate incident as “regrettable operational mistake” and then prayed for the soul of the dead. As much as he has said all the expected things, on this one, Nigeria needs to go beyond “regrets” and question how this must have happened. This incident deserves a far more serious enquiry than an aide’s scribble of a soulless apology. Nigeria bleeds every day and there does not seem to be a sense of moral urgency activated in dealing with the many incident of violence chipping away the edges of our national soul. From herdsmen violence to the killings in Southern Kaduna, Nigeria cannot survive this relentless slaughter of her own citizens. It is time to put off the automaton that drafts press releases in the wake of disasters and show some sense of humanity in dealing with these tragedies.

Klopp: Plymouth Win Was Good For Coutinho

Featured Image

Philippe Coutinho put up a performance that impressed Jurgen Klopp in the 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle.

The midfielder, who is just returning from injury setup Lucas Leiva to score the only goal of the match.

Coutinho could only manage one hour on the pitch before being replaced, but Klopp was impressed with his performance all the same.

“I’m happy, really happy. It was very important for us,” the manager told reporters. “I thought 60 to 65 minutes was the perfect intensity for today. Good for him and good for us.”

Teenagers Ovie Ejaria, Ben Woodburn and Trent Alexander-Arnold started, while Sheyi Ojo and Harry Wilson came off the bench.

“I saw a few really good things but they still have to learn,” Klopp said of his youngsters.

“We are not here to celebrate each single performance of our young players – that’s what we expect, that’s why they play. And then they need to get ready to be criticised.

“I don’t care what you say, but it’s important that they really listen to what we have to say.

“I liked, for example, the reaction of Ojo tonight. Everybody, maybe, with Ojo involved they expected he would have started if he was in this game tonight as one of the young players, but I was not too happy with one or two things.

“That’s not to say, it’s about something you need to feel and then go again. Today, I thought he made a big difference when he came on, with his speed and there was sharpness involved. He’s a wonderful player but, without sharpness, it’s nothing.

“I’m happy about their potential and we will do whatever we can to let it grow but they have a big job to do, too.”

Liverpool are back in action in the Premier League on Saturday, hosting Swansea City.
