Nigeria’s Anti-corruption War: Why The Presidency Must Stick With Magu

Nigeria’s Anti-corruption War: Why the Presidency Must Stick With Magu, By Godwin Onyeacholem

As some of the most disagreeable voices on and off the floor of the Senate had threatened when the National Assembly was on recess, the so-called red chamber, on resumption, made good the recurrent ominous assertions by these elements. In a move that seemed like the Senate was being propelled by a vengeful demon, Ali Ndume was removed as the senate leader. To say the least, his ouster had nothing to do with due process. It was a classic clinical act laced with all the ingredients of perfidy for which the current Senate is notorious.

This piece was written by Godwin Onyeacholem. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

The precursor of this mean undertaking deserves a brief recap. On December 15, 2016, Senate spokesman, Aliyu Abdullahi, had announced to the world that the Senate had “rejected” the nomination of Ibrahim Magu for confirmation as substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) because of a security report by the Department of State Service (DSS). Four days later, emerging from a meeting with President Muhammadu, Senator Ndume told State House reporters that the Senate at its executive session did not reject Magu, but only agreed to stand down his confirmation and await the outcome of a clarification on the report from President Muhammadu Buhari.

Although the Senate – again through a seemingly piqued Abdullahi who at a press conference affirmed himself as the authentic spokesman of the legislative body – promptly rallied back by insisting Magu was “rejected,” it was clear from then on that Ndume had, on the basis of his widely publicised contrarian position, become a sitting duck for many of his shady colleagues in the Senate. Some of them publicly boasted that the matter of his audacious counterpoise would be resolved on the floor soon as the Senate resumed. And so, on January 10, 2017, when the Senate resumed, Ndume unknowingly walked back into the chamber from a prayer-break, amid proceedings, into the waiting arms of his colleagues’ most brutal Machiavellian concoction of his removal as the leader of the Senate.

The reason for his removal was clear to all and sundry, but this Senate would not admit it. The public knows that Senator Ndume was sacked for having the guts to let the people in on the true picture of proceedings at the Senate’s closed-door session as it relates to Magu, namely, that the decision at that session was that his confirmation be withheld pending Buhari’s response to the security report. Also, that confirmation does not happen at such a forum; that a genuine process of confirmation cannot be started at an executive session; that as per the matter of the acting EFCC chairman, there was nothing like rejection in the manner the Senate conducted that day’s proceedings; that the issue of Magus’s rejection was never mentioned at the forum, and that rejection was an invention “smuggled in” only after the decision to suspend his confirmation had been agreed by all senators.

This exposé was what pushed Ndume’s colleagues to move against him, thus making him the proverbial sacrificial lamb on the altar of a legitimate support for the acting chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, a man who, through his work so far, has convinced a great majority of Nigerians that he possesses the ability, capacity and is also imbued with the integrity to hold the office to which he was rightly appointed by President Buhari.

At this point, it must be reiterated that there were two security reports on Magu from the same source – a first one which was unfavourable to his confirmation; and a second report which pointedly recommended his confirmation by the Senate, in view of his sterling achievements in an acting capacity. Why the Senate chose to ignore the second report that called for his confirmation and focused instead on the first one should be of great concern to President Buhari. Of this very second report, Senate President Bukola Saraki is very much aware. Then, if there isn’t more to it why didn’t the Senate work with this report?

It is important to present this narrative, which is highly credible, so that President Buhari would understand that all this is not about Magu being unsuitable for the position of chairman of EFCC, but about a grand scheme of a formidable network of highly placed crooked persons within and outside government, who are hell-bent on stopping him given the rare vigour and impetus he has introduced to the anti-corruption crusade.

These persons are aware that with the manner Magu is carrying on, many of them are already being exposed, arrested and prosecuted. And they reckon that if not immediately nipped in the bud, this strange occurrence that threatens their deep-rooted regime of corruption would ultimately see most of them end up in jail. This is the only reason behind the ongoing well-coordinated move to stop Magu by any means necessary.

But President Buhari should remain firm and not succumb to the prejudiced opinions and sheer blackmail of those working hard to blunt, if not completely eliminate, the refined cutting-edge of the anti-corruption campaign symbolised by the current leadership of the EFCC. He knows many of these agents of retrogression, and some of them even thrive under his very nose. There is no doubt that in Magu, the president made one of the finest choices of his administration considering the fact that both share almost an equal level of revulsion for a monster that has virtually crippled Nigeria, and which Buhari has placed at the top of his “change” agenda.

Yes, Magu is not the only person who can do the job. But in a heavily corrupted, depraved and contaminated society hobbled by elite bankruptcy such as Nigeria is, it is hard to find a man like him packed with the fearlessness, ruggedness, tenacity and firmness to confront high-profile thieves and politically exposed persons (PEPs) in and out of government without surrendering to their threats, intimidation or mouth-watering offers depending on their presumed capabilities.

And besides this uniqueness of character, Magu, realising that government alone cannot effectively fight corruption, is strengthening the public component of the anti-corruption war by working to ensure that the people, the multitude who are the real victims of corrupt practices, see the war as theirs and become the foot soldiers.

This accounts for his engagement with Nigerians from all walks of life, his pragmatic interface with civil society, as well as frequent tours across state capitals, towns, and hamlets, to stimulate awareness on the danger corruption poses to the well-being of Nigeria.

Even with the confirmation hurdle to cross, Magu has gone about his task with utmost dedication and passion. If President Buhari and his government want the anti-corruption war to succeed, clearly their best bet is to stick with Magu. And the first step in that process is to resubmit his name to the senate for confirmation.

Ex-Senate President Ken Nnamani Explains Why He Dumped PDP For APC

Featured Image

Ken Nnamani, a former Senate President on Sunday registered with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State.

The former Senate President, who had severed ties with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in February 2016, said that he joined the APC because of the intense demand from his constituents.

Mr. Nnamani, who led the Senate from 2005 to 2007 as a member of the PDP quoted a former U.S. House Speaker Tip O’Neil to back up his argument for joining the APC.

“All politics is local,” Premium Times quoted Mr. Nnamani as saying hours after announcing the move on Sunday evening.

“I have to do what my constituents demanded by joining the APC at ward level.”

“I do not believe I should continue to be a member of the PDP as it is defined today,” Mr. Nnamani said at the time. “This is certainly not the party I joined years ago to help change my country.”

Mr. Nnamani had been a member of the PDP since it was founded in 1998 until February 2016 when he abruptly severed ties with the party.

The APC had commenced fresh registration of members in the South East after its database of members crashed and wiped off.

Nnamani’s registration was witnessed by the Vice Chairman, South-East, Chief Emma Eneukwu, Director General of Voice of Nigeria, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, chairman of Enugu State chapter of the party, Dr. Ben Nwoye, and the chairman of the registration committee, Rev. Tony Ibeabuchi.

Conte: Starting Costa Was The Right Decision

Featured Image

Antonio Conte is standing by his decision to start Diego Costa and the striker’s performance is testament to that.

Costa was reportedly in a training session clash with his manager and also a subject of a big money from China last week, missing the match against Leicester with injury, but returned to put in a top performance against Hull City.

The Spain international opened the scoring before the end of the first half, scoring his 15th goal of the season, before Cahill secured three points after heading in a Fabregas freekick.

Conte told Sky Sports: “His performance was good, and I am pleased… for this reason, he started the game.

“During the press conference before the game against Hull, a lot of people asked me about his form, about his attitude, and I told them that I will take the best decision for the team. And I think after his performance that I made the best decision.

“It is normal to receive a lot of questions about it, but the most important thing for us is the answer that we give on the pitch. For the player, for me, the club, our fans, for the league and the table.

“Honestly, I was very happy to see the celebration because I was celebrating the goal on the bench. I think for Diego the most important thing was that he scored. The celebration was good, but most importantly he scored!”

“It is normal,” added the Chelsea boss. “If you see the other games on this day, you understand that this league is very difficult. I continue to say that every game, it is not easy, every team and game is very tough, it is the reality.

“But we faced the game in the right way, and now it is important to continue and know that in every game, we must fight a lot to try to win and try to take the points.

“I think [we feel] both confidence and pressure. It is normal that now we are playing the second part of the season – only three games, we have 16 more games – that every game, three points become very big.

“But we are ready, we are ready to fight, face the opponent, and the games are very tough also for the other teams.”

Australian Open 2017: Vandeweghe Dumps Out Kerber

Featured Image

WTA top seed and defending champion at the Australian Open, Angelique Kerber lost to Coco Vandeweghe to crash out in the fourth round.

The 29-year-old German won the Australian Open and US Open last year, but could not make it the quarterfinals, losing 6-2 6-3 to the world No. 35.

“Of course, they are new experiences … new challenges,” Kerber said of being the defending champion and top seed at a major for the first time. “I can learn from all the other stuff which is new for me.

“I was trying everything, but I missed a lot and I make a lot of unforced errors. So this was not my game.”

And even though Kerber was able to break immediately in the second set, Vandeweghe won four successive games from 3-2 down for the biggest win of her career.

“It was really special,” she said. “Beating the world number one on any stage and any place is great. I’ll take this one.

“I wasn’t feeling confident – I guess I faked it. I was nervous, but I had a game plan to execute and I knew that as along as I kept picking my spots, I had a chance.”

Vandeweghe will play Murguruza in the next round.

Wenger Apologises For Ref Rant, Says He Should Have Stopped And Apologised

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger has admitted he was wrong to attack the referee for the penalty he awarded to Burnley.

The frenchman was sent off in injury time, after having strong words with Ben Moss, who awarded a penalty to Burnley after Coquelin fouled Ashley Barnes.

Burnley were able to equalise from the spot with Andre Gray, only for Sanchez to get the winner from the spot after Ben Mee fouled Koscielny.

“My view is that honestly I did not see that it was a penalty,” Wenger was quoted as saying by the BBC when asked about Burnley’s spot-kick.

“I will have to watch it on the video. Francis told me that he ran into him. Myself, I should have shut up and I apologise for not having done that. It was nothing malicious. I should have kept my control, even if it was in a hectic time.

“I didn’t see any penalty from outside but I should have shut up and I apologise, even if I was frustrated.

“We finally got the win but of course it was very difficult for us. We couldn’t get the second goal, we played with 10 men and they played well as well. In the end we got the three points we wanted.

“Burnley are well organised, they make the game simple but efficient. We won there in the last second and we won again in the last second today,” he added, referring to Koscielny’s last-gasp winner at Turf Moor in October.

“Every week and every game is an unbelievable fight for everybody.

“We kept going, we are a relentless team. Burnley made it very uncomfortable for us.”

Burnley manager Sean Dyche, meanwhile, took issue with the assistant referee, who failed to spot that Koscielny was seemingly in an offside position prior to Mee’s foul.

“It’s a tough day for us in the end,” he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

“To lose a game in that fashion, with an offside not given is tough, particularly when you come to tough places like this.

“We never take anything for granted. We know how tough this division is but you need officials to make the right decisions and that is the shame today. They have to be brave have officials at places like this, I understand that, but you’ve got to think it has to be given.”

Higuain: Lazio Were Not Much Of A Threat

Featured Image

Gonzalo Higuain has praised Juventus’ performance against Lazio and also said the visitors were not much of a threat.

The first 16 minutes saw Juve go 2-0, an impressive response to last week’s loss to Fiorentina , with Higuain and Dybala on target.

“Lazio didn’t threaten us in the slightest and we have taken three very big points,” Higuain said to Sky Italia.

“The only ones with doubts were the media. We knew full well that we made mistakes, but we had proven ourselves in every other game.

“We figured out what we got wrong at Fiorentina and worked on it.”

Allegri used a new 4-2-3-1 formation, which featured attacking trio Higuain, Dybala and Mario Mandzukic in the same team for the first time in Serie A this season.

“It means we have to work hard but it is an excellent idea,” added Higuain, who now has 14 league goals this season.

“It is normal with a more attacking system that we all need to track back and help out in defence, but we proved that we can play like this.”

Nigeria’s Power Generation Has Dropped To 2,662 Megawatts

Featured Image

Nigeria’s power generation capacity has dropped from 3,959 megawatts on January 4 to 2,662 megawatts on January 22, 2017, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN said today.

The Nigerian Electricity System Operator, SO, website, a sub agency of TCN, disclosed the figure in its daily forecast on power generation data in Lagos on Sunday.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), TCN attributed the drop to low water levels at the hydro power stations and dearth of gas to the power generating companies.

The TCN said the total output of 2,662.20 megawatts from all the generation companies on Sunday had been transferred to the 11 distribution companies across the country.

According to the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) operational report for January 4, the power sector hit a peak generation of 4,959 megawatts but dropped to 2,662.20 megawatts on January 22.

NESI said the sector recorded highest system frequency of 51.32Hz and lowest system frequency of 48.52 Hz, while the highest and the lowest voltage recorded on Sunday were 372KV and 300KV, respectively.

An official of Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, who preferred anonymity, said electricity generation had been dwindling due to challenge of accessing gas by generation companies.

The official said that low level water levels at the country’s hydro thermal stations also contributed to the drop in generation.

He said that most hydro stations are currently confronted with low water challenges to generate energy.

The TCN official said that this often caused system collapse when the system scrabbled to distribute energy from the grid to distribution companies and the quantum of energy was not sufficient.

According to him, it is a challenging period for power sector but it will get better once the hydro swing into high water level and gas becomes available.

He attributed the drop in generation to the attack launched against pipeline facilities belonging to the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company, NPDC, on January 17 around Ugheli in Delta State.

Similarly, a top official of Egbin Power Station, who also pleaded anonymity, said that the power plant, with a capacity of 1,320 megawatts now generates 340 megawatts due to gas constraint.

The official said that the 340 megawatts Egbin generated was wheeled out to the national grid at 6.00 a.m. on Sunday.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, had on Friday said that the sabotage of power assets by militants prevented Nigeria from generating 7,000 MW of electricity.

“Today, at its most frugal, the nation’s power grid would support 6,500MW; pushed to its limit, it would carry 7,200MW.

“So it is not true when you hear that the grid capacity is not more than 5,000MW. It is growing every day and more projects are coming up.

“We have completed some and more are still coming up. So that is where we are,” Mr. Fashola said at the Nextier Power Dialogue in Abuja on Friday.

The minister said while power was out due to attacks in one axis, the expansion of either the grid or gas supply was kept alive on another axis and hydro power was also being expanded.

Finally, Jammeh Departs Gambia For Exile | Barrow Promises Transparency

Featured Image

The former president of Gambia, Alhaji Yahya Jammeh, has finally departed Banjul, the country’s capital, to begin an indefinite term in exile.

This is just as the incoming President Adama Barrow on Saturday promised the citizens of his readiness to operate transparent and all-inclusive administration.

Gambia’s Jammeh Bows To Pressure, Agrees To Relinquish Power

It was learnt that Jammeh left just after 10.00pm for Conakry, along with President Alpha Conde.

In an attempt to pat his huge ego, he was given a full ceremonial honour by the military brass band and a red carpet treatment.

Hordes of journalists and a battery of photographers had camped all day at the Banjul International Airport waiting for his departure, after an agreement was reached on Friday night with President Alpha Conde of Guinea and President Abdul Aziz of Mauritania, for him to vacate power voluntarily.

The former soldier turned civilian leader held sway in the country for 22 years and had vowed to rule the country for a hyperbolic ‘billion years’ until he was thrashed in the presidential election by a political green horn, Adama Barrow.

Jammeh Begs ECOWAS To Extend Deadline To Stand Down

It is not clear where Jammeh will end up eventually, however, he flew out with President Alpha Conde in an aircraft owned by Mauritania.

Meanwhile, Barrow, while addressing newsmen in Dakar, Senegal, said it was about time the country was repositioned to achieve greatness and development.

“The time is now. There cannot be a better time because Gambians had waited for too long for this opportunity to come.

“This government would involve all well meaning citizens irrespective of political leanings and religion to build the country.

“We shall together do this in order to redeem the good image of the country and move it to greater height,’’ the President said.

Presidency Reacts To Rumours That “Buhari Is Dead”

Featured Image

Presidency has denied rumours making the round by some unscrupulous elements that President Muhammadu Buhari is dead.

Speaking on Saturday night, the Presidential spokespersons described as ”evil rumours” the social media reports on Buhari’s health conditions.

In their separate posts, published on their Twitter handles, Mr Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President and Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, dismissed the reports as false and clear case of mischief.

Mr Adesina said: “Best wishes to all who wish PMB well.

“As for those who carry evil rumours, may they receive grave to repent.’’

In the same vein, Mr Shehu dismissed the rumour that President Buhari was dead as being speculated by mischief makers.

He also described as false and untrue the report that the President was flown to Germany.

Shehu said: “He is alive and well! President Buhari is not magical. He cannot be holidaying in the UK and be in Germany, dead or alive at the same time.

“He is unlike a past President who was at Ota, with Chief Obasanjo and attending the Trump inauguration in D.C, being in two places at the same time!’’

Courtois: Rumours About Costa Won’t Derail Chelsea

Featured Image

Thibaut Courtois has stated that Chelsea are focused on their bid to win the title and won’t let any rumours about Costa split their attention.

Costa was missing from the squad that beat Leicester 3-0 after rumours of a training ground clash between the striker and Conte following talk of a £30 million per year off from CSL club Tianjin Quanjian.

The Brazil born spanish international will play in the match against Hull City today and Courtois insists he was injured last week.

“Obviously it was not a nice rumour that went around that he had a fight or anything,” the Belgian goalkeeper told Sky Sports.

“He had an injury and couldn’t train and obviously if you are not 100 per cent fit and you feel you cannot play, it’s logic that you don’t train with the team.

“This week he could train again and he trained very well, so he might play on Sunday.

“He looks very committed, we cannot doubt that about Diego. You can see that in all games he plays.

“Nobody in this team doubted it, so when the day before the game against Leicester that came out it was a bit of a surprise to the players but it didn’t affect us in any way because we know what’s the truth. The rest is maybe just trying to destabilise Chelsea, but we don’t let it.”

A win against Hull could see Chelsea go as many as nine points clear at the top of the table, but Courtois feels it’s too early to suggest the title is theirs to lose.

“If you’re on top they will say that, but there’s still 17 games to go and a lot of points to win and lose,” he said.

“Obviously this month is important for us. You have two big games coming up after Hull with Liverpool and Arsenal. If you can get a good result against both of those teams you make the gap maybe bigger.

“There is still a long way to go. Top games is one thing, but going away to Stoke or Burnley are difficult games where you can lose points.”

Milan Win Shows Napoli’s Capabilities, Says Sarri

Featured Image

Napoli’s 2-1 win over Milan is proof that they can achieve greatness, according to coach Maurizio Sarri.

Callejon and Insigne scores within nine minutes in the first half to hand Napoli the win, with Kucka’s goal not enough to get Milan back into the match.

Napoli are preparing for the match against Real Madrid in the UCL last 16 and Sarri says they’re capable of greatness.

“We showed our usual limitations, but there were steps forward, because we held out for the win and started to control the ball a bit better as time wore on,” Sarri told Mediaset Premium.

“These lads have got to realise they have great potential, without losing their humility, and find that determination to become a great team.

“We’re already a good team, but can become great.

“I did see a step forward in terms of mentality today and we showed maturity, so that’s an excellent sign.”

Napoli are level on 44 points with second-placed Roma, who are due to play Cagliari on Sunday, after 21 games.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema struggled in the 2-1 win over Malaga, but Zinedine Zidane has urged the supporters to stick with them.

Ronaldo was also poor against Celta Vigo and is struggling, with Benzema also getting booed by his fans.

Zidane understands his forwards are struggling with form, but believes the growing injury list is more to worry about.

“We are finding it hard to score and opponents are doing us damage,” the Madrid coach said. “We need to be relaxed and rest, we are generally happy with the scoreline.

“We must also have patience with the forwards. Karim and Cristiano have scored goals, maybe not in the last games, but I am not concerned.

“We had chances to score more, but we got two and it is a fair result. We must continue working as we have been. [It] is a good result in general.

“When you have difficulties, you need [the supporters] to be calm and support the team. I can only ask for everyone to remain calm.

“The fans will always demand more. We know that, but sometimes the players and the coaches need more affection from their fans. Our fans are very demanding.

“I understand the sentiments of the people. It is an audience that always want more from their team, but, sometimes, over the season, with many games, many injuries, the players need some affection, and the coach too.

“It is not the form of the attackers which worries me at the moment, it is more the injuries.”

With Luka Modric and Marcelo the club’s latest injury victims, Madrid ended the game with Lucas Vasquez at right-back – a source of frustration for Zidane.

“Lucas did perfect, but I do not like playing him there,” he added. “He is not a full-back. As always, he did phenomenal – even out of position.”

Southgate Praises Record Breaker Rooney

Wayne Rooney broke Manchester United’s all-time highest goalscorer record on Saturday and he has received praise from Gareth Southgate for his feat.

The skipper netted a 94th minute freekick to rescue a draw for United against Stoke, scoring his 250th goal to break Sir Bobby Charlton’s record.

The 31-year-old is also England’s record marksman – his tally of 53 again beating Charlton – and Southgate reflected on Rooney’s “incredible” achievements.

“When you look at whose record he has broken and the way that Sir Bobby is revered in this country and by his club, it shows you what an achievement it is,” he told the Football Association’s official website.

“To be the leading goalscorer for United – overtaking Sir Bobby – and for England is an incredible achievement.

“To have scored that many goals then you have got to have performed so consistently over such a long period of time, which is a mark of an outstanding player. Wayne has managed to achieve that.”

After securing his move to the Chinese Super League, reports named Tevez the highest paid player in the world.

The former Boca Juniors striker joined Shanghai Shenhua and was believed to be earning £615, 000 per week.

However, the 32-year-old denied reports of his salary as he spoke to the media for the first time since arriving in Shanghai.

“After my last game I didn’t mention anything to the local media about my salary in China,” said Tevez.

“Salary matters shouldn’t be told to everyone, it’s a matter of respect for my team-mates.

“My salary isn’t as high as the legends, but in order to respect my team-mates I won’t tell you how much.”

Speaking further, Tevez said: “First I want to thank you for the welcome. My family, siblings and friends are very happy, it was a very nice reception. I am very happy to be in Shanghai, to be able to demonstrate my football and do my best for the club.

“I appreciate the welcome, for my family and for me, it’s a love that I haven’t won yet, and I’d like to win it on the pitch.”

Tevez has moved to the lucrative CSL with an entourage of 19 family members.

“I like to be with my family always,” the former Juventus, Manchester City and Manchester United forward added.

“It’s a great challenge to accept coming to China, it’s a great effort, so it’s important for me to be with my family, so I can perform in the best form on the pitch.”

Ramos To Booing Fans: We Need Your Support

Despite winning on Saturday, Real Madrid were still booed by their fans, which really annoyed captain Ramos.

The defender found the net twice in the final 10 minutes of the first half to secure a 2-1 win at the Bernabeu.

Madrid are four points ahead of Sevilla and five points clear of Barcelona with the two teams to play on Sunday.

However, Madrid were still subjected to boos by their own fans in the Spanish capital, much to the annoyance of Ramos.

“I’ve always said that we can never change the Bernabeu,” the 30-year-old said.

“I’ve spent many years here and like Marcelo said after the Cup game the other day, all of the great players have been whistled here at some point. It’s a wake-up call to make the team respond.

“But it’s in the difficult moments that we need them to be behind us, not kicking us when we are down.

“We know how our fans are and we like the way they are. The objective is that we all take this forward together.”
