Mourinho Confirms Schweinsteiger To Stay And Play Europa

Featured Image

Bastian Schweinsteiger scored in United’s win over Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup and Mourinho has since confirmed he’ll be staying and joining the Europa squad.

The 32-year-old veteran midfielder started against Wigan Athletic, his first start of the season and third appearance so far.

Mourinho froze Schweinsteiger out when he joined United in the summer, but the former Germany international started training with the squad in December and will be staying at Old Trafford.

Mourinho said: “Yes, he is staying. He is going to in the Europa League list because we opened spaces with (Memphis) Depay and (Morgan) Schneiderlin (leaving).

“We don’t have many players, and we don’t have many options in midfield. Ninety minutes (against Wigan) was probably too for Bastian, from minutes 65-70 it was hard for him but now I think he is happy.

“He was a good professional when he was not playing, and after having some minutes he will be the same. With so many competitions and games he will be an option.”

Nigerians May No Longer Get 2-Year Visa To America Following Trump’s Order

Featured Image

Reports have emerged that except for the prompt intervention of the federal government to take a proactive visa policy review, Nigerians are at risk of losing American entry visas which have two-year validity.

This was coming on the back of the Executive Order signed on Friday by President Donald Trump.

Muslims Barred From Flights To US After Trump’s Order | Iran Issues Retaliation

It is understood that the content of the Executive Order, which was made public yesterday, showed that at least two sections will affect Nigerians directly.

Nigeria currently only issues one-year multiple-entry visa to Americans, which is a non-reciprocation of the two-year visa the country issues to Nigerians.

However, section 9 of the Executive Order states: “The Secretary of State shall review all nonimmigrant visa reciprocity agreements to ensure that they are, with respect to each visa classification, truly reciprocal insofar as practicable with respect to validity period and fees, as required by sections 221(c) and 281 of the INA, 8 U.S.C. 1201(c) and 1351, and other treatment. If a country does not treat United States nationals seeking nonimmigrant visas in a reciprocal manner, the Secretary of State shall adjust the visa validity period, fee schedule, or other treatment to match the treatment of United States nationals by the foreign country, to the extent practicable…”

By this provision, except the federal government quickly moves to extend the validity of Nigerian visa to Americans, Nigerians too will be issued with one-year visas.

This would also affect Nigerians who own dual nationality if their other passport is from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen — the seven Muslim-majority countries “of concern”.

Tuchel Unhappy With Dortmund Draw

Featured Image

Thomas Tuchel has revealed he is quite frustrated with how Dortmund failed to get the second goal and drew 1-1 at Mainz.

Reus scored the opener early in the game after Andre Schurrle set him up and they created good chances to double the lead.

Unfortunately, Dortmund could not get the second goal and fell to an equaliser from Danny Latza with seven minutes left to play.

“It was a decent away game from our side in the opening 45 minutes,” Tuchel stated at a news conference.

“But we were unfortunately not able to make the most of our dominance and score a second. It is annoying. We failed to double our lead.

“We did not give away any chances of note until the equaliser. I think we were very alert in defence and showed the right attitude. We dealt well with their counterattacks.

“We feel that we should have had a few more points now. It will be difficult.”

Dortmund remain fourth in the Bundesliga table following this weekend’s results, trailing table-topping Bayern Munich by 14 points.

Floyd Mayweather has revealed Conor McGregor is the only fighter he’ll get back in the ring to face.

The former five-weight champion has been linked with facing the UFC star in a crossover fight.

McGregor claimed Mayweather is scared to face him in the ring, but ‘Money’ who was ringside for Frampton’s rematch against Santa Cruz says he is ready to get back in the ring.

“Most likely the fight between me and Conor McGregor will happen,” Mayweather told Sky Sports in an exclusive interview.

“That’s the only fight that will get me back in the ring. He’s going to do a job on his side and we are going to do a job on my side and hopefully all the fans in the UK come over and support me.”

“I don’t know (when it will be), I need to communicate with my team, the fight hasn’t been made yet, but it is all about entertainment so hopefully we can make it happen.”

Apostle Suleman Prepares To Appear Before DSS On Monday With 30 Lawyers

Featured Image

There are strong indications that the General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide, Apostle Johnson Suleman, would appear before the Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday at its National Headquarters in Abuja with about 30 lawyers.

The secret police had invited him yesterday for interrogation based on his recent alleged inciting comments that Christians should defend themselves against attacks by Fulani herdsmen.

How Fayose Foiled DSS Plan To Arrest Apostle Suleiman In Ekiti

Barely two weeks ago, the controversial pastor was reported to have ordered his security aides to kill “any Fulani herdsman that comes into his church premises.”

He said this on the back of information received on a plot to assassinate him.

The development led to a ‘foiled’ – middle of the night – raid by detectives of the DSS in Ekiti State to arrest him.

‘If You Are Involved In MMM, You Are Demonic’ – Apostle Suleman [Watch Video]

DSS operatives had stormed the hotel where he lodged after a crusade, but Suleman quickly reached out to Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, who intervened on his behalf.

However, The Punch quoted a source as saying that:

“Suleman will be appearing before the DSS with about 30 lawyers because we believe that his persecution has become politicised.”

The Christian Association of Nigeria had also raised the alarm that Suleman “has become a refugee in Ekiti State as security operatives are said to be searching every nook and cranny of the state to arrest him.”

When contacted, the clerics Communications Adviser, Mr. Phrank Shaibu, confirmed the invitation, saying he would appear before the DSS on Monday.

He said, “Yes, I can confirm to you that he (Suleman) was officially invited and as a law-abiding citizen, he will honour the DSS invitation on Monday. The invitation, though ludicrous and an afterthought, is a welcome development.”

Federer Says It Is All About The Comeback

Featured Image

Australian Open champion Roger Federer says he is quite excited to have ended his long wait for an open trophy.

The Swiss tennis star has not won a Grand Slam title in over four years and is happy to win despite just returning from injury.

Federer has not played for six months, and was seeded 17th at Melbourne. He beat Nadal in five sets, winning 6-4 3-6 6-1 3-6 6-3.

Federer has now won 18 Grand Slams, four more than any other male player, but said: “That’s the smallest part, to be honest.

“For me it’s all about the comeback, about an epic match with Rafa again.

“Doing it here in Australia, that I can still do it at my age, after not having won a slam for almost five years. That’s what I see.

“The last problem is the slam count. Honestly, it doesn’t matter.”

“We go furthest back, you know,” said the Swiss maestro.

“Rafa definitely has been very particular in my career, I think he made me a better player.

“The way his game stacks up with me, it’s a tricky one. It remains for me the ultimate challenge to play against him so it’s definitely very special.

“I haven’t beaten him in a Grand Slam final for a long, long time. Now I was able to do it again.”

It was a first Grand Slam victory for Federer since 2012 [three defeats in finals since then] and he compared it to his long wait for a first win at the French Open.

“I think this one will take more time to sink in,” he said when asked to compare the win to previous Grand Slam triumphs.

“When I go back to Switzerland, I’ll think, ‘Wow!’.

“The magnitude of this match is going to feel different. I can’t compare this one to any other one, except for maybe the French Open in 2009.

“I waited for the French Open. I tried, I fought, I tried again and failed. Eventually, I made it. This feels similar.

“We’re going to be partying like rock stars tonight, I can tell you that.”

ASUP: Polytechnic Lecturers Begin Nationwide Strike Tomorrow

Featured Image

Barring any last minute change of plans, Polytechnic lecturers, under the auspices of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), will begin a one week warning striking from Monday (tomorrow) to February 5th, 2017.

The nationwide warning strike is aimed to press forward the plight of polytechnic education in the country before the federal government.

ASUP: Polytechnic Lecturers To Begin Nationwide Strike On Monday

Speaking on Sunday to newsmen, ASUP’s South-South/South-East Coordinator, Dr. Chika Ogonwa, said its members would embarked on an indefinite strike if the outstanding issues confronting body were not resolved within one week by the federal government.

He further explained that the warning strike was ‘a fight’ aimed at redeeming the nation’s education from a total collapse.

Dr Ogonwa also lamented the failure of the Nigerian government to commence renegotiation of the ASUP/Government agreement of 2010 on the review of the Federal Polytechnics Act.

The union had in August 2016 shifted the strike to January 2017 to give the current administration sufficient time to resolve the various lingering disputes with the Federal Government.

He said, “Effective from today (Monday), the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has lifted the ban on its deferred industrial action against the near collapse of the sector in Nigeria. The one week warning strike ends February 5th.

“President Muhammadu Buhari-led government is insensitive to our plight. After this warning strike, the Federal Government will be left with two options – either to close down the system or redeem it from total collapse.”

Ogonwa decried why the Federal Government had refused to implement the report of the NEEDS Assessment report, which as at July 2014, stated that public Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology in the country requires the injection of N652,591,478.614 to function optimally.

Corruption: Clearing Babachir Lawal Or Self-Indictment

Clearing Babachir Lawal Or Self-Indictment, By Jibrin Ibrahim

Click here to read more opinion articles

This week, the big story has been that President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the Senate in response to the lawmakers’ indictment of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and their call for his removal and prosecution. The letter provided an explanation, or rather, some excuses why the president would not act. The letter depicts a very high level of incompetence on the part of whoever wrote it but above all appears to make the argument that the presidential team can engage in corruption without consequence, which is the most direct route for the Buhari presidency to lose its credibility as a bastion of anti-corruption.

This piece was written by Jibrin Ibrahim. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

In the letter, the residency claims that the SGF was not given fair hearing before the indictment. Those of us who follow the media can all recall the invitation sent to Mr. Babachir to come and defend himself and his refusal to do so. How can the presidency claim it was not aware of the invitation and dare use its self-inflicted amnesia as an excuse to refuse to consider the substantive issue? Are they saying that people who are invited to testify and respond to questions and they refuse to do so, or run away, are innocent simply because they run away.

The other excuse is even more pathetic. The letter claims that the report was signed by three of the nine members of the ad hoc committee and that therefore it is a minority report that does not need to be considered. I have never heard such a lame excuse in my life. Is it for the presidency to determine that a Senate report is a minority or majority report? In any case, the Senate had repeatedly affirmed that the institution stands by the content of the report, so I find it incredible that the presidency would seek to sweep the matter under the carpet by such a claim.

The most disturbing element of the story is that the president had himself asked his Attorney-General of the Federation to look into the allegations and the letter did not say anything about the findings given back to him. My greatest professional concern is the sheer incompetence displayed in the letter. The message I get is that the presidency lacks competent technicians to craft excuses for the president. The issue here isn’t that presidents should have teams that are capable of giving good excuses. The concern is that whoever wrote such an important letter so badly does not have the capacity to do anything rational or sensible. More important, there are no control mechanisms in the system for filtering out arguments and reasoning that cannot stand.

There is an even more important moral question regarding the legitimacy of the president. Nigerians elected him because they believed he would combat corruption, whatever its source. Over the past year, there have been disturbing signals and allegations that some ministers and presidential staffers are corrupt. There are no indications from the presidency that corruption from within is being fought. It might be that the allegations circulating are frivolous. If that is the case, the president still has a responsibility to investigate and report his findings to Nigerians. The impression I am getting is that the president appears to have forgotten his solemn promise that he would not hesitate to deal with anyone in his team involved in corruption. All we have seen the president do is refuse to comment or properly investigate such allegations.

Mr. Babachir Lawal has not been found guilty by a competent jurisdiction, so it is unfair to assume that he is guilty. Nonetheless, the allegations made against him are very weighty. Different sources have fact-checked and confirmed that some of the companies Babachir gave contracts to indeed belong(ed) to him. That in itself is enough ground to at least suspend the Secretary of the Government who has, among his responsibilities, the mandate to ensure that no public servant violates the procurement code and procedures. On the moral level, the monies involved were allocated to alleviate the suffering and misery of the people of the North East, 20,000 of whom have been killed by insurgents and about four million displaced. It takes a high level of lack of empathy to take such resources and issue out useless grass-cutting contracts when starvation is emerging as a major threat to the lives of the survivors’ of the insurgency in the region.

We should not forget that the core issue is that the Senate had, in December last year, asked President Muhammadu Buhari to suspend Mr. Lawal and ensure his prosecution over the alleged breach of Nigerian laws in handling contracts awarded by the Presidential Initiative for the North East (PINE). The interim report had drawn attention to the “mounting humanitarian crisis in the North East” at a time in which Mr. Lawal appeared to be giving himself N200 million contract to clear “invasive plant species” in Yobe State through a company, Rholavision Nigeria Limited, in which he was a director at that time. If this allegation is not true, the president should come out and say so. Seeking excuses not to address the issue is simply unacceptable. The excuses have also been very harmful to the reputation of the president.

There is a report in yesterday’s ThisDay newspaper that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has written to the Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani to come and explain his utterances regarding the anti-corruption crusade of President Muhammadu Buhari. The party’s National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun is said to have drafted the letter addressed to the Chair of the Ad Hoc Committee. If this report is true, the reputation of the president and his government would suffer additional damage. The Senate is acting as a whistle-blower on public corruption. If allegations against a public official are swept under the carpet and the whistle-blower is harassed, this would become additional evidence that the regime is seeking to cover up corruption within its ranks. I am aware that the Senate President is himself being tried for corruption. Be that as it may be, the onus is on the presidency to disprove the allegations against the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Babachir David Lawal.

It is important for the president to realise that he cannot run away from this issue. The allegations against Mr. Lawal must be addressed frontally and investigated. The government must take the concerns of Nigerians seriously that if it is correct to arrest and try the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki, and his associates for corruption, it is also correct to properly investigate members of the presidential team who are accused and if there is a credible case against them, they must also be tried.

The president’s handlers owe him a duty to protect his reputation by not giving the impression that justice applies only to selected members of the previous regime. The president owes himself an even greater duty – protecting his personal reputation as a fearless anti-corruption crusader. He can only do so when he takes allegations against his friends and staffers seriously and acts. By appearing to refuse to act, the president would be indicting himself in the court of public opinion.

Dear PCMs, Here Are The Basic Things You Need To Know As NYSC Camp Opens On Tuesday

Meanwhile, the Director-General, Brigadier General Sulaiman Kazaure, has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for providing the support which led to the success recorded in the war against Boko Haram.

He made the remark when he addressed the 2016 Batch ‘B’ (Stream II) Corps members at the NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp, Potiskum, Yobe State.

Kazaure also praised the gallantry displayed by officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces in the course of prosecuting the war against the insurgents.

He further noted that the success recorded by the Armed Forces made it possible for the NYSC to resume the conduct of Orientation course in the state after several years of break occasioned by insecurity.

The Director-General, therefore, advised the Corps members to always be security conscious, and to report suspicious characters to security agencies.

Kazaure also noted the rising incidence of kidnap, and advised them to take necessary precaution, especially by avoiding ostentatious lifestyles, lone movements and attendance of night parties.

During a meeting with NYSC staff, Kazaure commended their courage and commitment to duty in the face of the problem of insecurity, which the state suffered over the years.

He assured them of Management’s commitment to their welfare.

Rashford Says He Can Become A Super-Sub For United

Featured Image

Marcus Rashford has revealed he has had to change his game and hone his skills to be able to affect games from the bench.

The 19-year-old England international has been subbed in for United 10 times this season and he is looking to make an impact whenever he comes in.

Rashford has already started to make an impact from the bench, scoring against Hull City in August and setting up Mata against West Ham this January.

“It’s important you do that,” he told United Review, ahead of the Emirates FA Cup visit of Wigan Athletic.

“You don’t know where the manager is going to bring you on, so you have to do that for all the positions really. Just so you’re ready and mentally prepared for when you get on the pitch.”

He continued: “So it is something you do when you’re on the bench but I think that’s only natural, for a player to be thinking about getting on the pitch, what you’re going to do when you’re out there and who you are going to come up against.

“It’s just about building on it and being able to repeat the same movements for the 90 minutes.

“I think it will come in time but I have to take it step by step. Sometimes, an approach can take time to perfect but it’s going well.

“It’s about almost singling out each player and each opponent you come up against so you know you can get a one against one. That’s when you know it is a good asset for me to use.”

Enes Kanter Issues Apologies To Teammates For Injury

OKC Thunder star Enes Kanter has revealed he apologised to his teammates after mistakenly fracturing his arm in the match against the Mavericks.

The Turkish basketball player fractured his arm after punching a padded chair in frustration, only for the chair to fold up and he hit metal.

“Of course it’s like a really sad thing because like, I mean because you’re letting your teammates down when you make a mistake like that,” Kanter said. “I mean your coaches down and stuff. But the only thing you can do is just, you know, you learn from it. The one thing you know I wish we could go back [in] time and then I could take it back. But mistake happens and we just got to learn from it and control your emotions.”

Kanter fractured his arm when he attempted to punch the seat of a padded chair in frustration. The seat of the chair tilted up as he swung, with his arm catching the metal edge instead.

“It was just frustration because I know this team, my teammates, all my coaches, these fans, the whole organization trusts in me and I was trying to not make any mistakes during the game,” Kanter said, “and especially it was a back-to-back game and then like I turned the ball over a few times and then I felt like really bad and I was thinking oh man I’m letting my team down. And then I came to bench, I was frustrated because I felt like I was letting everybody down and I was pretty frustrated and I hit my arm.”

The Center had surgery done on Friday and will be reevaluated in four weeks, but he’s expected to be out for eight weeks.

“I don’t want to put no pressure on myself or the medical staff or anybody,” Kanter said of his timetable. “I just want to get healthy and get back on the floor as soon as possible.”

A witness, Dauda Pambe, told Premium Times that he was among the travellers being escorted by soldiers from Maiduguri to Biu on Saturday morning when the gunmen launched the ambush attack.

He said: “We were somewhere between Bulabulin and DogonWaya villages when the Boko Haram gunmen opened fire on the vehicles ahead of us in the convoy”.

“The first vehicle was hit on the tire and the driver could not proceed so the passengers alighted and fled into the bush; the second vehicle was a pickup van carrying many passengers, and many of them could not escape”.

“They exchanged fire for sometime as many of us remained in the vehicles ducking to avoid being hit with bullet. When the shooting stopped and the Boko Haram fighters left, we had about seven passengers that were killed and some soldiers too were injured”.

The Maiduguri-Biu highway via Damboa Village, was one of the most dangerous routes targeted by fighters of the violent Islamic cult.

It was recaptured by the country’s military and opened last year.

Federer’s 6-4 3-6 6-1 3-6 6-3 triumph cements his status at the top of the game where he now sits four clear of Nadal and Pete Sampras.

Roared on by a partisan Rod Laver Arena crowd, Federer roared back from 3-1 down in the nerve-shredding final set before closing it out on the second championship point with a forehand winner to seal his fifth crown at Melbourne Park.

Ramos: Support Of Fans Can Help Us Win La Liga

Featured Image

Real Madrid are looking to rediscover their fine form when they face Real Sociedad today and Sergio Ramos believes the help of the fans can help them regain their touch.

The Santiago Bernabeu faithfuls have booed the Madrid team for their poor run of form, with Ronaldo and Benzema getting the brunt of the attack.

Real Madrid’s Spain 40-match unbeaten run ended with Copa del Rey exit at the hand if Celta Vigo coming right after.

Zidane’s men are currently one point ahead of Sevilla and two ahead of Barcelona, but Ramos believes they can stay firm with the backing of the fans.

“Above all, we want the fans to support us in order to help make us a better team and I’m convinced that together we can win La Liga,” Ramos told Marca, having made a similar plea after scoring both goals in last Saturday’s laboured 2-1 win over Malaga.

“It is going to be a tough game against a very difficult opponent who have played very good football this season and are deservedly near the top of the table.”

Ronaldinho Reveals Why He Can Never Be A Coach

Featured Image

Brazil legend and former Barcelona star Ronaldinho has stated he can’t go into coaching because his nerves cannot take the strain.

The free agent has also revealed he struggles to watch his former teams play a full game for 90 minutes.

The 36-year-old Ronaldinho will be watching from the stands as PSG take on Monaco, I don’t think it is something he’ll enjoy.

“I cannot watch 90 minutes, otherwise I suffer,” the Ballon d’Or winner said. “I like to see the best moments, the goals. That’s why I would never become a coach.”

Ronaldinho reached the pinnacle of the game with Barcelona, but it was at PSG that he made his name in Europe, and he remembers his time at the Parc des Princes fondly.

“Everyone respects me here and gives me a lot of hugs,” he added. “It’s a club that I love so much. I do not know why people love me so much here – I am speechless when I see it all.

“I am a son of PSG. When I arrived here, the gates of Europe were opened for me.

“My time here was very special. There were the games against Marseille and Bordeaux, the goal against Guingamp… these are moments that I cannot forget. To choose a favourite is impossible.

“I often speak with people who work at the club or who play here. The change of direction has not changed anything. There are still people who are here who were here in my day. I still keep in touch.”
