Corruption: Organised Labour Wants Names Of Looters Published, ‘Hands’ Of Culprits Cut Off

Featured Image

The leadership of the organised labour and their civil society allies on Wednesday protested in Abuja.

During the protest, the organised labour under the aegis of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), alongside their Civil Societies allies, demanded that the Federal Government reveal the identities of those that looted the common wealth and also asked that their hands should be cut off to serve as deterrent.

They also lamented that nothing so much had been achieved in the fight against corruption.

Addressing the workers during the protest rally for good governance at the Unity Fountain, Abuja, President of NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba said:

“We must not allow a situation where few, because of their interest will hold the system to ransom.

“We are demanding increase in electricity supply and they are saying lag more tariff, we are demanding increase in minimum wage and they say they are going to be paying in percentage. We should not be tired.

“Why should somebody steal one billion naira and walk the street free. We are demanding that they should be named and shamed. We are also demanding that one of their hand be cut off so that when we see them, we will know that they are people that has stolen our money.

“So, let us not be tired. Not to pay salaries and pensions is criminal. Not to increase our wages in this condition is corruption and so, we must demand good governance and support the fight against corruption. “It is obvious that what we are doing today is in our collect interest. As working class and our families and as Nigerians, we must always make our voice know and heard very clearly.

“Today, with what is happening in our system, we are actually at the receiving end because there is near absence of good governance and corruption is also fighting back very badly and we have been at the receiving end. Instead of addressing those challenges and paying salaries, what the are doing in some states is paying salaries in percentages.

“The height of this challenge is the absence of good governance, accountability, transparency and the rule of law, any system that does not have those ingredients, the first group that will suffer is the working class and their families and the citizens.

“That is why we are matching to canvass for good governance and also to lend our voice to saying that the fight against corruption must continue. If you look at the NEITI report, it states clearly that unremitted fund from the sale of oil and gas amount to another 22 billion dollars.

“If we have these money, I am sure that the challenge we are passing through would not have been there. Few people connive to transfer this money into their personal account and we are saying tau government must find the will to implement these reports and who ever is affected must be made to refund the money.

“We should not be lamenting always that there is no money and that the economy is in recession. Enough of lamentation and we must take our destiny in our own hands to demand for accountability, good governance and transparency and workers must not be made to be at the relieving end.

“The demand for minimum wage is legitimate. Governors are collecting more than maximum wage. They were given bail out fund which they diverted; they were given Paris Club refund which they also diverted and yet we have pensioners not being paid for about 77 months. Is that an attribute of good governance?

“We must therefore lend our voice to these challenges because if we keep quite. We will be consumed. We must struggle because he who is on the ground is not afraid of falling again.

“There should be good governance at all levels of governance and not limited to the centre alone. We have more challenges in the states and local government and so, it is our fight because it is an issue that affects all of us and we must continue to be united.”

Durant Believes OKC Fans Are Still Hurt By His Departure

Featured Image

Golden State Warriors star Kevin Durant is once again returning to face Thunders at Oklahoma City.

And the small forward believes the fans at OKC Thunder are yet to forgive him for leaving when he was a free agent last summer.

“I had good relationships with everybody there,” Durant told ESPN’s Marc Stein in a SportsCenter sit-down that aired early Thursday after the Warriors’ 123-92 victory over the Chicago Bulls. “I was good to a lot of people, [and] they were great to me.

“No matter what goes on [Saturday night in OKC] — cheers, boos — I know that stuff will be remembered, and it’s something that I’m always going to remember. It’s a new chapter in my life. I’ve decided to move on. I know I’m making it sound as simple as that, but to me, that’s how I have to approach it. It’s just as simple as me moving on and turning a new page in my life. But for them, I know it still hurts for me to move on. They looked at me as their son. I was there since I was 19 years old, and I grew up there. So, like I said, I understand, man. It’s all a part of playing sports. It’s all a part of being a fan, so I embrace it all.”

“I’m looking forward to playing in that atmosphere,” Durant continued. “I’ve always been on — I’m gonna say the other side of the fence — where a lot of people have clapped and cheered for me as I walked out onto the court. So to be on the other side, it’s going to be different, but it should be fun.”

“That’s what makes sports great,” Durant told SportsCenter. “That’s what makes fans a part of the team, a part of the organization. It’s that they’re loyal to their team, they’re loyal to that logo. Players come and go, coaches, GMs, but that logo stands forever. I know how important that is to those fans there in Oklahoma City. I was there. I was there for the first game [in OKC, after the franchise relocated from Seattle]. [I’ve] seen how they sold out every night, no matter how good the team was, no matter who was on the floor. So that means a lot to ’em.

“I know what I did wasn’t a popular choice, but I can respect how hard they ride for their team, how loyal they are to their team and to that logo.”

Jack Wilshere is focused on playing for Bournemouth and will think about his future at the end of the season.

The England international insists he is happy on loan with Bournemouth and says getting playing time will decide where he’ll play next season.

Arsene Wenger says he plans to bring the midfielder back to Arsenal, but Wilshere would not be drawn into the speculations.

He said: “My main focus at the minute is on playing for Bournemouth, getting them out of the position they’re in and back to winning ways.

“I’m concentrating on the next three or four months and then I’m not sure what’s going to happen.”

When asked if Arsenal had offered a him a new contract, Wilshere said: “I leave that to my agent.

“I’m just concentrating on maintaining my fitness, playing games and I’m enjoying it. As long as I’m here I’m going to enjoy it and help Bournemouth.”

On needing to play regular football next season, Wilshere said: “At the end of the season, when I sit down and think about [his future], that will be a big factor.

“I need to play, that’s why I came here. Bournemouth gave me that opportunity.

“It’s a big time for this club. They’ve worked really hard to get to the position they are today.

Conte Asks Chelsea To Stay On Premier League Title Race

Featured Image

Antonio Conte has asked Chelsea to stay on track and not lose their momentum in the title race, so as to keep the other teams at bay.

Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Arsenal further cemented their position on top place, as they’re nine points clear of Tottenham.

The Blues have only lost one match this year and Conte wants them to keep it that way and not give the chasing pack a chance to pip them to the trophy.

Speaking to the BBC’s Premier League Show, Conte said: “Now we are top of the table but this league is very tough.

“For me now it is important to continue to push and exploit this momentum.

“If you send the right signal for us and not for the other opponents it is very important.”

Chelsea travel to Turf Moor to face Burnley on Sunday.

Noble: West Ham A Happy Place Since Payet Left

Featured Image

Ever since Dimitri Payet left West Ham for Marseille, Mark Noble says the club has been a happier place.

Payet returned to Marseille for £ 25 million after telling Slaven Bilic he no longer wants to play for the club.

West Ham have won three of their four matches since his departure and Noble says the players are more settled since the frenchman left.

“Obviously we were gutted. The manager, as you saw from his press conference, was obviously gutted as well,” the West Ham captain told Sky Sports News HQ.

“He had a massive impact on our team because he was a big player in the changing room. The players loved him and would do anything for him.

“It got a bit disjointed and it was a tough time for all of us. But it has become a happy place again. I think it was on the manager’s chest and mind.

“He didn’t want to get rid of Dimi, but he wanted to get rid of the situation. Obviously we had to deal with all of that and the best way to do that was by winning games, that’s what we’ve done.”

Speaking about her character as Sade, Somkele Idalama recalls her closest personal connection to her role. “I have never been held to ransom and kidnapped so to speak but I have been in a situation where my loved one was so I could relate. Being dragged on the floor was not fun at all (laughs) but we got through it,” she reveals.

UNILAG Distances Itself From Purported Dress Code Issued To Students

Featured Image

The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has distanced itself from a purported dress code issued to students.

UNILAG Introduces New Dress Code For Students | Bans Low Waist Jeans, Mini-Skirts And Tight Outfits

The refutation was issued in a statement by the Deputy Registrar, Information, University of Lagos, Prof. Toyin Adebule, on Thursday.

Reports had some days ago made the round that the school in a memo has approved new dress code for students.

In a memo purported on Tuesday, it was alleged that the university had issued a new dress code for students, adding that indecent dressing did not ‘reflect the seriousness, dignity and character-moulding nature of academic enterprise’.

Among others, the report claimed that the university had outlawed tight-fitting clothes as well as mini skirts and dresses.

However, the University said it did not approve new dress codes, while stating that it encourages decent dressing.

The statement read: “The University of Lagos wishes to inform the general public that it has not approved or implemented any new dress code for its students. The general public is hereby advised to discountenance any campaign in the print, electronic or social media claiming that the University of Lagos has introduced a new dress code for its students. All such claims are false and do not emanate from the university.

“However, it is pertinent to state that the university encourages students to dress decently and our watchword is, ‘Dress as you want to be addressed’.”

Everton Manager Ronald Koeman Expects Romelu Lukaku To Stay

Featured Image

Ronald Koeman says it would be “perfect” for Everton if Romelu Lukaku chose to extend his contract at Goodison Park.

The striker’s agent, Mino Raiola, claims the Belgium international will snub big-money offers from across Europe to extend his contract with Everton.

“I didn’t speak to the board about Romelu. If his agent says he likes to stay and is close to signing a deal then that is perfect for Everton,” said Koeman.

“Normally players, if they really see a future in a club, they see the team improving, the team is getting stronger every day, then that is always a plus for players to stay.

“We know everybody has his own ambition, that is normal, that’s a human being, and we like to keep the good players and he is one of them.”

Lukaku has scored 16 goals in 23 Premier League appearances this season – form that has helped the Toffees climb to seventh in the division.

Koeman admits it will be difficult for Everton to replace the former Chelsea striker if he decides to leave the club in the summer.

“At the moment, he is top scorer in the league and playing at a high level. He is so clinical and it would be difficult to find a replacement for him. I hope he will stay,” Koeman said.

“First of all, it starts by yourself, it is to improve. He is really a world class finisher but in other detail, in other qualities, he can and must improve and he knows that’s the most important thing.

Costa Hails His Idol Drogba

Featured Image

Diego Costa has credited and praised Drogba for helping make his career at Chelsea start out successfully.

Drogba won 10 major trophies in his first spell at Chelsea and returned for a second time in 2014-15, with Costa also joining, he added the League Cup and EPL to his cabinet.

The Spain international said Drogba offered support and advice, even though it was clear he would be relegated to the bench.

“I have always seen Drogba as the example to follow in terms of a centre-forward,” Costa said. “He was strong and scored loads of goals and he was a quality player.

“Just watching him train helped me. Just seeing him, I was amazed. This is because – and I’m not making this up at all – I specifically used to watch Chelsea [before he joined], who are obviously a big club, just to see Drogba.

“He was famous and everyone would talk about him. I even liked watching him when he played for the Ivory Coast.

“When I arrived here, he was never cold with me, quite the opposite. I wasn’t exactly scared of him, but he was such a legend who had helped the club grow and been a part of all that.

“He made history here, so could have been dismissive of me but, no, he was always fantastic with me. I will always have fond memories of him and whenever I see him, I thank him. It’s not always easy for someone with so much history to be in that position.

“I was playing well, scoring goals, and he would support and motivate me, whereas others might not have done the same. I take my hat off to him.”

Having faltered in 2015-16, Costa is back on form for Chelsea this time around, scoring 15 times in 22 Premier League appearances for the top flight’s runaway leaders.

FG To Take Over Arik Air

Featured Image

The Federal Government has offered to take over distressed airline, Arik Air and announced lifeline to help keep the company afloat.

According to reports, the management of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) explained that the government’s decision is in line with its desire to sanitize the country’s aviation sector to prevent a major catastrophe in the country.

AMCON spokesperson, Jude Nwauzor said

The development will afford Arik Airlines, which is the largest local carrier in the country, to go back to regular and undisrupted operations, avoid job losses, protect investors and stakeholder funds as well as ensure safety and stability in the already challenged aviation sector,

The airline will now be managed by Roy Ukpebo Ilegbodu, an aviation expert, under the receivership of Oluseye Opasanya, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

In a statement, the Minister of State on Aviation, Hadi Sirika, expressed the belief that the development will bring about stability in the airline.

“We believe that this appointment is timely and will stabilise the operations of the airline. This will enhance the long term economic value of Arik Air and revitalize the airline’s ailing operations as well as sustain safety standards, in view of Arik Air’s pivotal role in the Nigerian aviation sector.”

Sirika also pledged that the ministry of aviation would support the new management of the airline and ensure that all necessary steps are taken to ensure that there would be no undue disruption on Arik’s regular business operations.

Wenger: Arsenal Still In Running For Title

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger is not losing hope of winning the title, despite Arsenal sitting in fourth and 12 points behind Chelsea.

Arsenal dropped crucial points last weekend losing 3-1 to Chelsea, but Wenger believes they can still overtake Chelsea.

“It is never over; we are not to behave like that. Even if you [reporters] think like that, I don’t,” Wenger said.

“We look at the teams who surround us, we are all in a pack that is very tight and the fight for every position is massive as it has always been in the Premier League – maybe even more so this season.”

Just five points separates second from sixth in the league and Wenger knows his side face a battle to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

“[Top four] is always difficult but maybe even tighter than ever. The way we respond to a disappointing result last Saturday is vital,” he said.

“If it is over [title race] for us then it is over for everyone else because we are in a pack there.

“They [Chelsea] have an advantage – they don’t play in Europe, they play for nothing and have no midweek games.”

Jones Says LVG Never Believed In Him

Featured Image

Phil Jones says he was not happy under Louis Van Gaal and he feels better with Jose Mourinho in charge.

The defender was sidelined due to a knee injury problem last season and could only make six premier league starts.

However, Phil Jones has been a very important part of Jose Mourinho’s squad and he’s happy to be used again.

“I feel there have been only three managers who have every truly believed in me and understood me as a player,” Jones told the Manchester Evening News.

“That’s not being critical of other managers but the only three were Sam Allardyce, Sir Alex Ferguson and now Jose Mourinho.

“They have all given me belief and confidence. I am not one who needs to be patted on the back every single day and told I am brilliant. Some players need that, I don’t. But those three certainly gave me confidence.”

“I was on the bench at Wembley in the FA Cup final and during the last two months of the final season of Van Gaal last year I was fit and playing. I was just made to play reserve games,” Jones said.

“For whatever reason he thought I needed to be fitter. I had no problem with that, I just played the games. I did what I could do to get back in the team and unfortunately it didn’t really work out under him.”

The former Blackburn Rovers defender added: “No question there were thoughts about my future. It was in the back of my mind. If you are not playing games that speaks volumes.

“I said to myself at the start of the season that if someone believes in me and gives me the chance I know I am more than capable of delivering for the manager. Jose has done that.

“Hopefully if I stay fit and keep playing well the it well be at Manchester United because there is no better club to be at.

“The manager has given me the confidence to go to the next stage. I have always said from day dot if somebody comes in and they give me a chance to play and play regularly then they will get the best out of me.”

Wilder Hungry For Unification Fight Against Parker

Featured Image

Deontay will face Gerald Washington in his WBC title defence, but is already looking to unify the heavyweight division by taking on Joseph Parker.

Wilder has 37 wins to his name and will take on Washington on February 25 in Birmingham, Alabama.

The heavyweight champion who is known for his knockouts does not think Washington is ready to face him and has his eyes set on WBO champion Joseph Parker.

“I want Joseph Parker,” Wilder told Ring TV. “This is how I want things to go and this is what my team has in mind as well – 2017 is all about unifications.

“I’m not looking past Gerald Washington. But I look through it. I’m window shopping. After Gerald Washington, we’re going after the winner of Hughie Fury and Joseph Parker, which I’m predicting Joseph Parker to win. So, I’m going after Joseph Parker for the WBO title.”

“Gerald Washington is a big guy I’ve seen fight a few times,” added Wilder. “I don’t think he’s ready to fight me, but he thinks he is. We’ll find out on February 25.

“I chose him because he’s always been respectful while always wanting the opportunity. He’s going to come ready to fight.

“My preparation stays the same, even with the opponent change. I’ve been in situations where I’ve had to change a lot after an opponent dropped out, but Gerald being as good as he is and similar to Wawrzyk makes it easier. They have different styles but we’ll work on how to break him down.”

Wilder returns to the ring after breaking his right hand and tearing a bicep during his eight-round win over Chris Arreola in July

“I definitely feel 100 per cent, but we’ll see what it’s going to feel like in the ring when I apply this force to a human skull. When I’m in the gym doing work, I feel great,” Wilder said.

“I never really let my hand properly heal until this injury, because the bicep takes longer to heal than the hand. The time gave me an opportunity to really improve my left hand. I feel more polished now than I’ve ever been.

“You have to have patience in this sport. The big fights that people want to see will be coming. I’m not scared of anyone and I won’t run for anyone. My team is on the same page and we’re going to keep working together and moving forward.

“It’s all about adjusting. Each and every time I go through something inside or outside of the ring, it just makes me better and better.

“Chris Arreola’s style was perfect for mine. Even with the injuries that I was suffering, I could still get the job done. I also had to fight through the injuries with (Bermane) Stiverne, because I hurt my hand in the third round of that fight. Being able to have these experiences has made my confidence even higher.”

President Buhari Is A Victim Of His Own Transparency – Lai Mohammed

Featured Image

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has described President Buhari as being a victim of his own transparency following the ongoing controversy over the president’s vacation.

Lai Mohammed said this while addressing State House Correspondents after yesterday’s Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Adding that even though the President while embarking on his vacation informed the National Assembly and transmitted power to his Vice President, it was surprising that Buhari was pronounced dead by some people, less than six hours after he had arrived in London.

The minister lamented that even those who watched President Buhari board the aircraft in Abuja and saw him in the plane before takeoff, claimed that he was flown to UK in an air ambulance.

According to the Minister, “Mr. President, like I said elsewhere, is probably a victim of his own transparency. He was going on leave, he did what the constitution said he should do, transmitted it to the National Assembly and Acting President was put in place. And he said `while I am on leave, I am going to conduct some medical tests’ which many, or all of us do without announcing it.’’

President Buhari was expected back in the country on Sunday, following the completion of his vacation, however, he sent a letter to the National Assembly same day  extending his vacation in the UK  to enable him complete and receive test results from his doctors.

Wenger Certain His Future Is Secure

Featured Image

Arsenal’s recent dip in form has brought up speculations that his future is at stake, but he says Arsenal’s season is at stake and not his future.

Arsenal are now 12 points off the summit, after back-to-back losses to Watford and Chelsea.

The 3-1 loss at the Stamford Bridge spurred talks of the manager getting sacked, with a fan flying a banner that read “Enough Is Enough, Time To Go”.

Asked about that incident ahead of this weekend’s meeting with relegation-threatened Hull City, Wenger told a media conference: ” I believe what is important is we focus on the next game and do not give too much importance on one fan.

“It’s not me at stake, it’s the season of Arsenal that is at stake.

“In a football club it’s important you have different opinions. What matters is not the opinions of people, what matters is the next result and how we respond to different situations.

“We fight with teams who have invested not much more than we have and this is a period where we have to stick together, focus and respond.

“It’s been a difficult week. We are here to win football games and when we don’t win football games we are very disappointed. It [the Hull match] is a good test at an important moment of the season and it’s a good opportunity to show what we are made of.

“We have a big fight in the Premiership, a big fight in the Champions League, we have still the FA Cup as well. We want to do well in all three competitions. That is why it is important we focus, respond and get our fans behind the team.

“This is a very sensitive part of the season and we have to respond to disappointment together.”

S/Africa Unveils $260 A Month Minimum Wage | Which Is Four Times Better Than Nigeria’s N18,000

Featured Image

The South African government has unveiled a national minimum wage of 3,500 rand ($261) per month in 2018, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Wednesday.

According to Reuters, the announcement follows protracted negotiations between the government and labour unions.

Full Breakdown Of Nigeria’s ‘2017 Budget Of Recovery And Growth’

The Deputy President also added that the national minimum wage, which equates to 20 rand ($1.50) per hour, would come into effect in May 2018.

“The balance we have sought to strike is that it must not be too low, so that it doesn’t affect the lowest paid workers, but not too high that it leads to massive job losses,” Ramaphosa told a news conference.

He also explained that firms and businesses that are unable to afford the minimum wage would be permitted to apply for an exemption of up to 12 months.

The development has been greeted with approval from supporters who maintained that it would stimulate growth as workers can spend more, and reduce inequality.

However, critics have said that it could lead to increased unemployment as employers will be unable to afford higher wage bills.

Meanwhile, the announcement is coming at a time when Africa’s most popular nation, Nigeria, is battling to raise its own minimum wage as it has been gorged in the abysmal depth of an economic crisis.

Strike! NLC Set May 2017 Deadline For Implementation Of N56,000 Minimum Wage

The country’s current minimum wage stands at N18,000 ($60) with organised labour demanding that it be increased to at least N50,000 ($166), even though several states and local governments have ‘continuously’ defaulted on the existing amount.

The Nigerian government has failed to accede to the demand of labour in the wake of a biting recession that has crippled Africa’s largest economy.

This was evident in the recent protest by labour unions who argued that the N18,000 is way below a living wage and cannot meet basic needs of workers.

Allegri Not Confirming Or Denying Arsenal Links

Featured Image

Juventus’ Massimiliano Allegri is being coy on whether he’ll be taking over from Arsene Wenger as Arsenal’s manager in the summer.

Wenger is yet to extend his contract at Arsenal, with his current one expiring in the summer. And Allegri has been linked with taking over from the frenchman.

Arsenal are said to be in advanced talks with the Italian manager, but the Juve manager would not discuss on the speculation.

“I won’t deny or confirm anything,” he told Mediaset Premium. “I am in sync with the club, now we have to focus on winning.

“At this time of the season the media always says I’m leaving, even when things are going really well.”

It’s Official: Drake Dethrones Adele As World’s Best-Selling Artist

Featured Image

Aubrey Drake Graham has been named the best-selling recording artist of 2016 by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), dethroning popular British singer Adele.

The Canadian star is the fourth recipient of the IFPI’s Global Recording Artist of the Year Award, which accounts for an artist’s worldwide sales in both physical and digital formats as well as streams.

He managed to achieve that millions of sales and billions of streams with his fourth album, Views, which topped the charts around the world.

A statement issued on Wednesday by Frances Moore, IFPI chief executive, read:

Views became the first album to reach one billion streams on Apple Music, while ‘One Dance’, the album’s second single, was the first song to be played one billion times on Spotify.”

“Drake’s phenomenal success reflects how deeply his unique sound appeals to the enormous global audience.”

In the UK, Drake’s single One Dance topped the charts for 15 weeks, nearly beating the all-time record, held by Bryan Adams’ (Everything I Do) I Do It For You.

However, Views only ended the year as the country’s eighth best-selling album, behind Little Mix’s Glory Days and Adele’s 25 – which took the top spot for the second year in a row.

In Germany, the world’s third-biggest music market, the album was only the year’s 100th best-seller.

While Drake is certainly thankful for all his success in 2016, the Toronto rapper is focused on making 2017 even bigger.

Herrera: Top Four Finish More Important Than Europa League

Featured Image

Ander Herrera has said finishing in the top four in the league is more important than winning the Europa League.

Manchester United face Saint-Etienne in the last-32 of the Europa League.

Manchester City edged United last season to fourth on the table, and even though Europa League winners automatically qualify for the UCL, Herrera wants to get in through the league.

“We are in good form, but we want to be in the top four as soon as possible,” said Herrera, speaking at the launch of the TAG Heuer Manchester United Watch Collection at Old Trafford.

“Of course we have to be in the top four, but we also have three titles to play for.

“We will not be 100 per cent happy if we are fourth, though, because we want to finish as high as possible, but minimum we have to be in the top four and then fight for the rest of the titles.

“The Europa League is another door to the Champions League, this is true, but we want to get it through the league. But of course, it is another door for us.”
