Bryan Okwara Renews Contract With Martini As Brand Ambassador

Featured Image

One of Nigeria’s finest actors Bryan Okwara who was hitherto Martini’s brand ambassador has renewed his contract with the brand for another year.

The award winning Martini was first launched in 1863 and has for more than 150 years been exciting the taste buds of discerning consumers. The Martini range of sparkling wine and vermouth has a winning, vibrant and bittersweet taste which is the result of its unique elaboration process, considered still today as an art, the selection by hand of more than 40 botanicals included in the recipe and its origin, the Italian Piamonte, homeland of the Vermouth.

Reminiscing on the last one year during the interview with reporters at the event, Bryan noted that “the last one year working with Martini has been an exciting journey for me, I have discovered a whole new world of fun and celebration which is what Martinis about, from the enlightening visit to the steep hillside vineyards of Pessione Italy – the Martini Homeland to being part of two exciting Grand Prix in Singapore and Abu Dhabi, and  celebrating every moment with Martini on board the planes, on the VIP corners and with friends; it’s all a memory to cherish for a lifetime and I can’t wait to get on the road for Martini again”.

Bryan Okwara

He therefore thanked Bacardi-Martini Nigeria (BMN) for the honour of extending his contract and noted that the signing has further deepened the synergy the brand has with Nigeria’s entertainment industry of which he is a key stakeholder. He assures that the relationship will ultimately increase top of mind awareness for the brand and that it will propel the Martini range leading to positive return on consumer experience.

Bacardi Martini’s Area Director West Africa, Mr. Vikas Mittal speaking at the event noted that the renewal of the contract with Bryan Okwara who is a multiple award winner, in and outside Nigeria is an attestation to how Bryan has been able to engage with the brand and carry through the essence of the Martini brand, inspiring Martini consumers and championing a successful campaign since the relationship was consummated the previous year.

He added that in the course of the year gone by, Bryan shot a soon to be released new campaign tagged “Play with Time” in Singapore and expressed optimism that the association would continue to produce the right consumer engagement via associations and activations.

Pioli: Gabigol Will Get A Chance With Icardi’s Ban

Featured Image

Gabigol could get the chance to break into the first team with Mauro Icardi getting a two-match ban according to Inter manager Stefano Pioli.

Icardi and Perisic have both been handed two match bans after the controversial defeat against Juventus. And this gives Pioli an attacking problem.

However, the manager has hinted at the possibility of starting Gabigol, who is yet to make a start since joining from Santos.

“Icardi is an important player for us, as are Perisic and Brozovic, but now we have a chance to show our quality as a squad,” said Pioli.

“It is not true that we don’t have a replacement for Icardi: with Andrea Pinamonti, Eder, Rodrigo Palacio and Barbosa I have plenty of options.

“We know what each of them can do. Gabigol starting? We will see. We can play with a traditional centre-forward or with a more mobile player.

“Eder and Palacio both have great movement, for example. It depends on the game and how our opponents set up.

“I will decide on our line-up over the next day or so.”

Washington Tells Wilder Not To Underestimate Him

Featured Image

Gerald Washington has sent a note of warning to Deontay Wilder to take him seriously or lose his world title.

Washington will take on Wilder on Sunday, February 26, challenging him for his WBC world title.

Washington didn’t get his chance in time, but he believes if Wilder underestimates him, he can cause a major upset.

“If Deontay showboats in the ring with me, I’m going to hit him in his mouth,” he said.

“Deontay better take me seriously, because I am real and I’m coming.

“I have so much to fight for and to push me and drive me towards my goal. If I focus on those things, it’ll give me everything I need to keep pushing forward.

“I’m not worried about Deontay’s knockouts. I’m going to take care of my business. I know what my job is and what my goal is. I’m putting my head down and getting to work.”

Washington was confirmed as the WBC challenger just over three weeks before the Alabama date, after initial opponent Andrzej Wawrzyk failed a drugs test.

“This fight came at the perfect time for us,” he said.

“We’re looking forward to the opportunity to compete. We’re always ready. This is our life and we love to be here.We have more than a puncher’s chance. We do a lot of different training, drills and mental work to get ready for this fight.

“Deontay has his opinion on if I’m ready, but everyone has certain tests in life they have to pass. I’m ready to test myself against the best.”

Wlad Admits Joshua Is His Toughest Test

Featured Image

Wladimir Klitschko will face Anthony Joshua at the Wembley Stadium on April 29 and the Ukrainian admits it is his toughest test.

Klitschko used to be the world’s No. 1 heavyweight for more than a decade, but will be challenging Joshua for his IBF belt and the vacant WBA ‘super’ titles.

The attendance at Wembley is expected to be 90, 000, which will overshadow the amount of spectators that has ever seen Klitschko fight.

“I had maybe 40,000, 50,000, 60,000 but never 90,000,” he told TalkSPORT.

“It’s the toughest challenge I’ve ever had, because in a certain way he is a copy of me size-wise and he is a world champion in a professional sport.”

Klitschko has also not ruled out the possibility of the undefeated British boxer dominating the division.

“This fight is definitely something we are thinking is going to be great on both sides,” said the 40-year-old.

“One Olympic champion is fighting another one, one generation is fighting another generation, so there are a lot of questions.

“Do I still have it? Is Anthony good enough now? All these questions are in our minds. But we never thought it was going to be that big.

“Thankfully, it is that big, and it’s getting even bigger, unexpectedly it’s getting even bigger, and the interest is tremendous and amazing.”

Klopp: The Liverpool Project Is Long-Term

Featured Image

Liverpool are looking to put an end to their poor run of form when they face Tottenham on Saturday and Klopp still believes he can be successful with the club, as the project is a long-term one.

Liverpool have only won one match this year, with their latest defeat coming against Hull City. And Klopp has taken the blame for the slump.

Liverpool sit fifth on the table and 13 points behind Chelsea, the German manager is ready to take on the challenge the league presents.

“We are still convinced that this is a long-term project,” he said. “The players learn, but it’s my job to bring them into the right situation.

“I don’t question everything [after a defeat]. Everything is easier when you win a game, but the job is still the same.

“My job is never easy, but it’s always easy to enjoy. It’s football, every situation is a challenge. If you are in a good place you have to stay there, if you are not you have to solve problems immediately.

“We don’t look for excuses, we look for solutions. Just because you aren’t flying, it doesn’t mean you can’t win the next game. You always have to win the next game. The next game is Tottenham.”

Liverpool have taken 13 points from a possible 21 against top-six teams, a record Klopp is keen to improve against a Spurs side who are unbeaten in nine Premier League games.

“Our record should be better,” Klopp added.

“We know we can do a lot of good things still, but we have to show it on the pitch.

“Against a team like Tottenham, we need everything. If we play like we did in the first half against Hull – no chance. If we play like we did in that second half then [we have a] better chance, but we want better.

“I don’t think too much about other teams. Things like this [Spurs’ good run] happen.”

Luis Figo Explains Why He Dumped Barcelona For Real Madrid

Featured Image

Luis Figo has revealed a lack of recognition from the Barcelona hierarchy prompted his  move to Real Madrid in 2000.

Speaking about the transfer in an interview with La Liga’s official website, the former Portugal captain suggested that he had not felt valued by the Barca board, which pushed him to accept a better contract offer from Madrid.

“There was a lot of pressure,” Figo said. “There was a time when I thought it would not happen. But it was not just the sporting and the financial side, there were other people involved. There are always moments when you have doubts, you think a lot about whether to do something, until you take the step and there is no going back.

“In the final accounts, the same as in any profession, if you do not really feel 100 percent recognised for what you put in and what you do — I am not talking about the fans, but those who manage and control the club — when you have other offers you think about making a change. And that’s what happened.”

Angel Di Maria Opens Up On His Time At Manchester United

Featured Image

Angel di Maria has revealed that he intended to see out his contract when he joined Manchester United in 2014.

The Argentina winger penned a five-year deal when he made a record-breaking move from Real Madrid but he left for PSG after just one year at Old Trafford.

Spanish newspaper Marca asked Di Maria if he ever thinks about returning to Real Madrid or heading to Barcelona and he replied: “I do not think it, truthfully, not because I do not want to say it. But many things can happen in life.

“I thought that I was going to fulfil my contract at United and I left after a year, so therefore I do not know what can happen tomorrow. One always has his head where it is and then you see.”

Di Maria has returned to form with PSG, scoring 10 Ligue 1 goals in 29 appearances during the 2015/16 season, although his performances this year have been disappointing, bagging just one league strike in 19 games.

Di Maria also revealed how United was the best offer for both him and Real Madrid, and that he hopes to meet his former club in the Champions League final.

“No, I left when I went to Manchester because it was the best offer for Madrid and for me,” the 28-year-old continued.

“When I arrived in Paris and touched the Madrid I already said that I had the feeling that sooner or later we would touch. And it was in the group stage. It was nice to go back to the Bernabéu and say hello to all the people.

“Hopefully I can eliminate Barcelona and I’ll play Madrid again in this Champions League.”

Mata Asking Teammates To Embrace Pressure

Featured Image

Juan Mata has asked his teammates to embrace the pressure that comes with wearing the shirt of Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho challenged his players to get out of their comfort zone, before they beat Leicester 3-0.

Mata says teams will improve their performances whenever they face United and urged them to cope with it.

“You need to manage playing here and you need to handle it,” he told Soccer Saturday.

“If you play for a club like this you need to know that there is a lot of competition for places. There is a lot of competition within the team and then with other clubs.

“When a team faces Manchester United they will always fight until the end. We have to be ready for that and when you play for United you need to know that. I think the right mentality is to try to win.”

“David De Gea Happy At Manchester United” – Juan Mata

Featured Image
Juan Mata has insisted Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is happy at the club.

Mata told a Spanish radio station Cadena SER: “David is a veteran here already, been here many years. Everyone recognises his contribution to the team.

“More rumours have come out? If we are just in February, imagine until June, July, August.

“I’ve not spoken to him about this at all. He is relaxed here, and with too much to think about for the rest of the season, without thinking about the summer.”

De Gea said he is happy at United this week, while Perez was coy when asked, saying: “We won’t work on transfers until the end of the season.”

Mata, meanwhile, has said that he personally would be interested in returning to La Liga at some stage, having played in England since joining Chelsea from Valencia in 2011.

“I don’t know what will happen,” the 28-year-old said. “I’ve been asked before, and I don’t know. I’ve been here six years, and I am happy in England, but I love Spain still and always follow La Liga from here. I would like to play again back at home.”

Conte Not Ruling United Out Of Title Race

Featured Image

Manchester United are sixth on the table and 14 points behind Chelsea, but Conte believes they’re still in the title race.

Mourinho’s men are in very good form in the league, as they’re currently on a 15-game unbeaten run.

And even though Chelsea are nine points clear of second placed Tottenham, Conte does not think United are out of it.

He told reporters: “Honestly, I think there are six really strong teams that can fight to win the title, and we must know this.

“If we think we are very close to winning the title because we have nine points [ahead of their rivals], this is a great mistake.”

Conte was also asked about Eden Hazard’s form, with the winger scoring a superb solo goal in the win over Arsenal, and whether he can put a value on the Belgian sensation.

He added: “I’m not very good at putting prices on players. I think Eden is a great player, a top player, at a very high level.”

Panic As Suspected Ritualists Behead Herdsman In Ekiti

There was panic in Omu town, in Oye Local Government area of Ekiti State, after a herdsman, Ahmed Dele, was beheaded by yet-to-be identified persons.

The Punch gathered that the assailants chased the deceased while he was grazing his cattle, caught up with him some few kilometers away from the town and beheaded him.

Speaking on the incident, the Secretary to Jamunati Fulbe Association of Nigeria in the state, Idris Salaudeen, said the victim, who was a member of the association, and a Fulani from Kwara State, was declared missing by his boss, Jimoh Dele, on Monday, after he failed to return home with his cattle.

Salaudeen further revealed that his body was later discovered around 4.30am in the bush, some two kilometers away from the town.

Following the incident, many of them were now afraid of carrying out their legitimate business since they didn’t known the motive behind the gruesome murder of one of their members, he said.

“Up till, now there was no reported case of clash between the victim and any farmer in the area,” he added.

He urged the Federal Government and security agencies to save the Fulani community from the “unprovoked and unwarranted attack by unmasking the killers and bring them to justice .

“This is a very frightening development, considering what the country is going through in terms of insecurity. There has been a lot of misconceptions and negative reports about the activities of Fulani herdsmen in recent time. But I want to tell you that we are peace loving people and we have been living peacefully with our various host communities in Ekiti State.”

Lending voice on the tragedy, the traditional ruler of the community, the Olomu of Omu, Oba J.A Ogundeyi, described the incident as strange and condemnable.

Wenger Brands Alonso’s Goal Scandalous

Featured Image

It has been almost a week since the match against Chelsea, but Arsene Wenger still believes Alonso’s goal is a foul.

The Gunners lost 3-1 to Chelsea dropping 12 points behind leaders Chelsea. Alonso scored the opener for the Blues, a goal Wenger described as a foul.

Alonso towered over Bellerin to head in the goal and made contact with his face, leaving the defender with a concussion.

And Wenger has now gone one step further by branding the goal “scandalous”, saying it was vital in deciding what he suggested was an even match between the two sides.

“Overall we did not defend well, especially on the goals,” Wenger told Sky Sports.

“It was a very even game with unexpected goals and chances. If you look at the saves made by the two goalkeepers, it was a very even game.

“On top of that, I think we made some tactical mistakes, especially for the first goal and on top of that, we were unlucky as the goal was a scandalous goal.”

‘Why I Returned To Nigeria’ – Tiwa Savage Bares It All To CNN’s ‘African Voices’

This week ‘African Voices’ meets one of Nigeria’s biggest stars, Tiwa Savage, whose vocal talents have taken her from humble roots in a church choir to singing in Los Angeles with some of the industry’s biggest stars.

The programme reports from Lagos, where ‘African Voices’ discovers what made Savage return to Nigeria and build her career at home.

‘African Voices’ learns that finding success at home was an uphill climb, as Savage explains: “When I first moved to Nigeria, I got a lot of people discouraging me about being a female artist, and a lot of people didn’t want to invest money or time because they didn’t think I was lucrative…. Female artists are huge in other parts of the world. It shouldn’t be different in Africa.”

Savage’s musical career began at 16 years old, when she was singing backing vocals for the late pop star George Michael.

‘African Voices’ learns that this not only allowed Savage to move to Los Angeles in the United States, but also collaborate with other notable musicians such as Akon, Kat Deluna and Fantasia.

Savage explains to the programme what made her decide to return to Lagos: “I worked with a lot of people, and they would be interested by my name… ‘Where’s that from?’ I’d say it’s Nigerian, West African, and they’d say, ‘You’re African?’ and fascinated that I was straight from the Motherland… This was a lightbulb moment. These people were interested in Africa, and here I was running from it.”

Having now returned to Nigeria as a recognised star, Savage explains how life in Lagos has changed since leaving at a young age: “It’s overwhelming, as well. My family is from here… It’s a great feeling, but sometimes you really just want to run, get something and go back home.”

‘African Voices’ accompanies Savage to several personal landmarks around the city, including Maven Studios, where she is currently recording, as well as the City Mission Methodist Church, where Savage had her first audition as a singer.

Reflecting on what she has learnt on her journey and the decision to build a career in Nigeria, Savage tells ‘African Voices’ what advice she would give her past self: “Believe in Africa. Believe in yourself, and believe in Africa.”

Also in this week’s ‘African Voices’, the programme travels to South Africa to meet meets world-renowned singer Thandiswa Mazwai and reports from Zambia, where it meets rising freestyle star, Fungai Chileshe.
